a history of innovation
EST. 1934 Since our founding in New Zealand in 1934, we have grown into a global design-led company of over 3,000 people.
We manufacture in the USA, Mexico, Italy, Thailand and New Zealand and sell our products in over 50 countries around the world. Our design heritage is founded on a pioneering spirit and a culture of curiosity that has challenged conventional appliance design to consistently deliver products tailored to human needs. For us, legacy is about looking into the future, while ensuring what we develop today is aligned to the fundamental principles of sustainable design.
We are commit-
ted to ongoing research and development. Our culture is one of open innovation, which allows people to work collaboratively to find insights and ideas, which connect with our customers and respect our planet.
turning routines into experiences
What gets us up in the morning is to make life better for humans and the planet. Every day there’s somebody, somewhere performing a routine task, whether it be washing the clothes, caring for food, preparing the next hearty meal or doing the dishes.
We deliver product all over the world that turns
a routine into ritual, a chore into a pleasure. We don’t just make things that fit the space provided. We create products that fit the lives lived around them, that make life that little bit better through the experiences they deliver.
design for real life
We are curious about people At Fisher & Paykel we are curious about people — how they live, where they live, what they do and how they use things. This is where hidden insights wait to be uncovered. We are curious not only with the function and performance of our products but with the emotional role they play in people’s lives. For us, design is not a self-serving goal; it is a human endeavour to make life a little bit better if we can.

The next big thing in ovens
The world’s largest 60cm Built-in Oven We wanted to make an oven that gave perfect results, every time, for every type of food. Fisher & Paykel’s heritage company Shacklock had been designing leading edge ovens since 1873. Pioneering designs for pioneering families, these ovens were big and strong and multi functional.
Over
time as kitchen appliances became smaller, more refined and easier to clean, built-in ovens had taken the small, European-style as the standard. We knew customers wanted more space inside their oven. Our customers wanted to be able to roast a large leg of lamb and still have space for a dish of potatoes, and we saw them struggling to fit them both in at the same time.
We wondered if we
could make an oven that had a large internal cavity — larger than most other comparable ovens — without compromising the cooking quality, evenness and efficiency.
Our
product development team answered the challenge. They have created a 90L oven with 77L of usable capacity that provides optimum cooking performance with elements both top and bottom.
We knew a heavy, hot oven
door was a safety concern so we ensured we kept the cool-touch feature while redesigning the venting system so that only three panes of glass were required for a lighter oven door that people could safely open and close with one hand.
We knew symbols don’t
clearly explain each function so we’ve created an interface that clearly explains what each function does and we intentionally avoided touch screen style interfaces with complex

programming.
We knew customers
wanted perfect results whether they were cooking pastry or rotisserie chicken so we’ve exhaustively tested each function to ensure consistent, ideal cooking. Our pyrolytic selfcleaning oven models were created as we knew that people wanted an easy way to clean their ovens. Customers wanted a stylish centerpiece in their kitchen so we developed an award-winning design language and look that places this oven at the centre of the Fisher & Paykel kitchen family.
ActiveVent™ technology is a key
innovation of the 60cm Built-in Oven. Nearly all ovens build-up moist air and unless the oven is vented, the moisture can ruin certain types of food. Poor venting can lead to temperature fluctuation and even more chance of spoiling a favourite recipe. This challenge was made more complex by our desire to make the oven as efficient as possible —which meant keeping that hot air sealed inside and saving energy during heat up and use.
Collaboration
between our sustainability engineers, electrical engineers and food technologists resulted in a new venting system that could remove the moist air but retain the heat within the oven. Once we had perfected this technology, our food technologists and product testers saw the potential to further fine-tune this venting for individual cooking functions to give cooks more control. When set to Vent Bake, the venting system creates a hot and dry environment, perfect for foods like roasts and pavlovas, drying out the surface but retaining moisture inside.
designed to match
Introducing the new range of ActiveSmart™ fridges New water dispenser styling and SmartTouch controls combined with already great design features mean these fridges are designed to match with Fisher & Paykel’s family of kitchen appliances, as well as your lifestyle. In all ActiveSmart™ French Door and Bottom Freezer models we’ve moved the SmartTouch controls to the inside front of the fridge, putting control at your fingertips, within easy reach. On the outside, the new water dispenser gives our ice & water models an even cleaner look with a simplified interface that matches the styling of our other premium Fisher & Paykel kitchen appliances.
With the Ice Boost
function, we’ve increased the amount of ice that can be produced — up to 30% more per day. Soft-close hinges on French Door Ice & Water fridges make these models even easier to use. These fridges still come in sizes to suit many kitchens and families, and are still powered by our class leading ActiveSmart™ technology to keep your food fresher for longer. All these features plus a fresh look that fits the rest of the Fisher & Paykel kitchen family, combine to form the new ActiveSmart™ refrigeration series.
multi-temperature cooldrawer™ can be set to freezer, chill, fridge, pantry or wine cooler mode.
Introducing the Fisher & Paykel CoolDrawer™
cooldrawer™ Designed to change from refrigerator to freezer at the touch of a button. CoolDrawer™ is built on the concept of distributed refrigeration, combining ActiveSmart™ technology in a drawer based design that can be placed anywhere in the kitchen, home or entertainment area. CoolDrawer™ provides five temperature settings to deliver total flexibility — fridge, freezer, chill, pantry and wine mode, combining intelligence with convenience.
Front Loaders Now Powered by SmartDrive™
Fisher & Paykel has redesigned the Front Loader revolutionising washing for a new generation Fisher & Paykel’s renowned SmartDrive™ technology has been used to create a new range of Front Loaders that are quick, quiet, gentle and reliable. These washing machines are energy and water efficient and the door can even be opened at certain stages if you want to add something mid wash. The new Front Loader comes as a WashSmart™ for people who like to personally control their wash settings or a QuickSmart™ for those who like to simply turn on the machine and walk away.
Both machines provide a variety of settings for every type of wash. There are up to 13 different wash cycles and four spin speeds for better clothes care for a wide variety of clothes types. This care and control is made easy with the SmartTouch™ dial. One of Fisher & Paykel’s design insights was that people wanted a short wash cycle so that they could get the load on the line or in the dryer before heading out for the day. Nine out of the 13 cycles in the Front Loader take less than an hour to complete at 30°C. You can wash a huge load in the Everyday cycle and when you are in a rush, the Super Quick 15 cycle in the WashSmart™ washes a small load in just a quarter of an hour. A key difference in our new front loaders is Vortex Wash. Our engineers created a system that uses the centripetal force of the spinning drum to force the sudsy water through the clothes to enhance wetting. By getting the cleaning agents into the clothes quicker, they get clean quicker. Making a Front Loader that was whisper quiet was also essential. To remove the shudder and noise of traditional Front Loaders, Fisher & Paykel has invented special magnet technology and developed a special lamination manufacturing line in order to make the quietest direct drive motor in the world.
the social kitchen
Natalia Schamroth & Carl Koppenhagen, Chefs, The Engine Room Restaurant Auckland, New Zealand
Thanks to Fisher & Paykel, Carl Koppenhagen and Natalia Schamroth’s kitchen was designed with functionality and sociability in mind. It’s fairly safe to assume that the concept of the work triangle — a set distance between stove, sink and fridge — has been around for centuries. It has been the mainstay of kitchen design for decades, and there have even been rules set down as to just how many steps someone should take to cook an evening meal. But what if that hampers rather than helps householders? Fisher & Paykel recently launched the concept of the ‘Social Kitchen’, the idea that kitchens can be designed around consumers and households rather than a rigid plan. The idea is to free householders from the work triangle, and to make kitchens into places where people feel free to live and interact rather than just complete domestic tasks. “What we mean by ‘Social Kitchen’ is looking at the changing nature of the kitchen and how appliance design can make that a better space and a better working and social environment,” says Fisher & Paykel’s head of design Mark Elmore. The kitchen of Carl Koppenhagen and Natalia Schamroth, owners and head chefs of The Engine Room restaurant, exemplifies the ‘Social Kitchen’ concept perfectly. Carl and Natalia’s main consideration was to make the kitchen a place where they could not only cook for themselves and test recipes for the restaurant, but interact with friends and family. To do this, they relocated the kitchen to the front of their home and installed Fisher & Paykel modular appliances to create a space of maximum flexibility and functionality.

Firstly, it was vital to have enough bench space for them both to work. To facilitate this, Natalia and Carl chose a Fisher & Paykel cooker with twin 60cm ovens and six-burner gas cooktop rather than a traditional 90cm chef’s oven. Thus, one of them could be creating a robust spicy savoury while the other cooks a delicate

Then when we entertain, the Double DishDrawer™ can easily handle all the mess.” The appliance the couple is most excited about is the Fisher & Paykel CoolDrawer™ placed near the end of the island, close to the dining table. Natalia and Carl can adjust the temperature and use the CoolDrawer™ to hold anything from fruit and vegetables to bottles of wine. “Rather than having one big fridge, and everyone trying to get in and out of it at once, people can help themselves from the CoolDrawer™ and it frees up space for food in the fridge,” Carl says.

can also be transformed into a freezer to accommodate home-made ice cream or frozen desserts for parties on hot summer days. With everything complete, the couple is loving their new space. “We were just desperate to have a kitchen that was totally social,” says Natalia. “Being able to put this kitchen in place has really changed our lives.” by Christine McBride for HOME New Zealand June/July 2011
