The Social Kitchen

THE SOCIAL KITCHEN

The kitchen has not only evolved but it has also moved. No longer a place for one person at the back of the house or, in some cases, in the basement of the house, it has gradually moved forward to occupy the centre of the home. As well as this literal move, it has also changed in function. We use the kitchen space as an office, as a meeting place for the family, to engage with the children, to entertain, and sometimes we even prepare food in it — but even that is changing. At Fisher & Paykel we’re interested in the role that the kitchen plays in our lives. In this book are a series of questions that may assist you when you are thinking about designing your new kitchen space. While not providing you with a design, answering these questions should lead you to understand the way you live your life around your kitchen, and ultimately inform the design that meets your needs. Mark Elmore Head of Industrial Design at Fisher & Paykel Appliances.
