PREVENTION MODE FPD's SRO Unit Receives Specialized Crisis Training for Youth
One of the Task Force’s measurable goals was to develop an education and training program for our public safety departments. Fishers Police Department continues to track toward the goal of ensuring all FPD officers are trained in Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) techniques, but our School Resource Officers (SROs) face a unique challenge in dealing with students. While the SROs had already undergone the traditional CIT training, they just received specialized CIT for Youth training in July. The 40-hour CIT for Youth training focused on adolescent development and the teenage brain. “When we’re dealing with a kid in crisis, it may not be a mental health issue at all, it may just be a developmental issue,” said Lt. Mike Johnson. “They just might not know how to handle a crisis.” Johnson said that SROs wear three hats, law enforcement, education and mentoring or counseling. “We’ve hitched our wagon to keeping kids safe and helping kids make good choices,” said Lt. Johnson. “When we are dealing with a kid who doesn’t understand how to deal with a crisis and they are reacting in a way that could be construed as potentially criminal, violent or aggressive, de-escalation techniques and understanding how to comfort the kid and make the situation less stressful is critical.” Sergeant Wayne Druelinger shows local children the inside of

MAYOR FADNESS CHALLENGES RESIDENTS TO MENTOR HSE STUDENTS As part of Fishers’ mental health task force, Mayor Fadness is challenging 50 residents to join the effort to provide support to local students through Youth Mentoring Initiative (YMI). YMI is a school-based mentoring program that pairs adult volunteers with HSE Schools students for a semester at a time. Mentors meet with the students for one hour each week during the school day. “YMI is a volunteer-based organization that provides a critical network of support for local students,” said Mayor Scott Fadness. “In Indiana, suicide is the second leading cause of death for individuals ages 10-34 and it’s clear that we need to proactively reach out to assist our youth in any way we can as a community.” The need: • 600 HSE students grades 5-12 are identified each year who would benefit from having a mentor • 37 percent of HSE students grades 7-12 report having no sense of hope • 76 percent of students who had a mentor for more than a year said they felt better about their future Students who have been through the YMI mentorship program experience: • Increased self-confidence and an improved sense of self-worth • A better understanding of accountability and social responsibility • Improved communications skills, particularly in identifying and dealing with emotions • Academic improvement and healthier social interactions with peers
