HSEVENING OF INNOVATION

HSE CELEBRATES 21ST CENTURY LEARNING IN THE CLASSROOM AT NEW COMMUNITY EVENT by Emily Abbotts, Director of School and Community Relations, HSE Schools The way teachers help their students learn is changing, and education is looking and feeling a lot different to those who graduated more than 10 years ago. According to Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jan Combs, “students are focused not only on content and skills, but also creativity, teamwork, collaboration, application and innovation.” Hamilton Southeastern Schools adopted HSE21, a 21st century model, in 2011. The initiative aims to prepare students for success in a globally-connected world by incorporating meaningful and authentic learning. On any given day, kindergarten through high school, students will be working to solve real world issues by consulting with their peers and speaking with experts from across the world. Students now meet academic standards by participating in relevant, hands-on activities during the course of the day. For those curious about HSE21 or want to learn more and see it in action, the district is planning its first-ever HSEvening of Innovation, a celebration of 21st century learning. “We’re excited to present HSEvening of Innovation which is designed to provide families and the community with evidence and insights into the work of our students. It is an opportunity to see the real-world application of student learning,” adds Combs. Teams of students and teacher representing all 21 schools in the district will be on-hand from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 2, 2018 at Hamilton Southeastern High School. Organizers say HSEvening of

FISHERS BIZ SPOTLIGHT with Think Fishers spoke with Clayton Thompson of MyNetWire to learn more about the growing Fishers software company. Think Fishers: Tell us about MyNetWire. What’s your 30-second elevator pitch? Clayton Thompson: MyNetWire is primarily a software as a service company. We have over 4,000 clients and more than one million members using our product nationwide. Our clients range from homeowner associations, memberships, clubs, churches, non-profits, and local small businesses. TF: What is it that you love most about being a part of the Fishers community? CT: While most of our clients are out of state, we have many in the Fishers area. What we love about Fishers is the family first atmosphere. Fishers is where you go to build your nest, and we remain confident that the best is yet to come for this city. TF: What’s your favorite local bar or restaurant? CT: Restaurants are a big deal at MNW. We kind of rate them in tiers. When you want a quick bite, a favorite of ours is Tijuana Flats. For a bit of a longer lunch, we hit up Wild Ginger or LouVino. And lastly, when you want a great night out or a celebratory dinner, we don’t have to go far to find Petersons. TF: What’s new for 2018? CT: 2018 is going to be a big year for us. We haven’t dabbled much in approaching potential clients for business, so we’ve started hiring to help us grow through a salesman’s effort. Beyond the growth we expect to see, we’re streamlining our processes, releasing an offering of turnkey, modern designs to our software clients and working on integration with a sizable accounting software company in our industry. This will allow us to approach large companies in our industry and sell in bulk. TF: To us, Fishers is a smart, vibrant, and entrepreneurial city, and we know our businesses are too. Which of those words best describe MyNetWire? CT: Vibrant. Come by the office to verify this claim. We have prided ourselves in building a work environment that allows for creativity and expression. Stop in anytime, and see for yourself!

STATE of the CITY 2018 MAYOR FADNESS SHARES COMMITMENT TO VIBRANCY & ALIGNMENT DURING A PREVIEW OF THE COMING YEAR It’s hard to believe it was only three years ago that Mayor Fadness shared a vision of a smart, vibrant, and entrepreneurial Fishers. This March, Mayor Fadness took the stage again for the annual State of the City address. Presented by OneZone, the event highlighted City successes over the last year, while also outlining goals for the coming year. As the 2017 Money Magazine Best Place to Live, his speech shared a continued focus on creating a dynamic community, efforts to build an engaging park system for all ages and ability levels, and a reinvestment on all sides of Fishers.

CELEBRATING TEAM FISHERS Fishers’ State of the City address is unique in that it touches on various happenings on all sides of the community. This year, the event recognized a handful of notable accomplishments achieved by City staff. While Fishers continues to be a desirable location for business and residential growth, there are nearly 500 City employees leveraging their talents to make a true impact on the organization. Mayor Fadness shared a few untold stories from within city buildings that are making remarkable differences on how we employ talented individuals, stay at the forefront of public safety, remain desirable to businesses, and strive to build a 21st Century infrastructure. The first of those recognized was Fishers’ Human Resources Director, Cici Conover. Cici has been employed by the City of Fishers for nearly twenty years, and as Mayor Fadness put it, “I have often found Cici to be the moral compass for our organization.” Cici has

been integral in attracting talented candidates, and helping to support the city’s internal team, Team Fishers. We wish her nothing but the best as she heads into retirement and the next chapter of her life. Mayor Fadness then shifted his tone to talk about how technology has evolved, and as a result, how threats against children have changed. The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force worked 81 cases in 2017 that spanned not only the City of Fishers, Hamilton County, and the state of Indiana, but across the country and across the globe. Their work resulted in several, consecutive life sentences for the perpetrators, and most importantly, saved children in our community and beyond. We’re grateful to have a team of dedicated, driven officers working to eliminate threats to our youth. 2017 was a record-setting year in the city of Fishers. Before the year ended, our economic development team celebrated the announcement of 2,120 committed jobs by companies in Fishers. Those jobs create opportunities for our residents to enjoy meaningful employment with convenient access while offering endless opportunities to immerse in local things to do. The year also included a record $64.5 million in new business investments. Fishers Economic Development Department ensures that new and existing businesses have a warm welcome to Fishers, and a dedicated partner within the community. “The type of economic growth we’re seeing in Fishers is the result of the intentional vision to make Fishers a smart, vibrant, and entrepreneurial community,” said Mayor Scott Fadness. “To see the numbers of homegrown and Fishers-based companies being celebrated today shows that the momentum of initiatives such as Launch Fishers and the upcoming Fishers IoT Lab are critical to the future of entrepreneurship and economic growth for our city. The companies announced today come alongside the more than a dozen companies whose growth we celebrated this year.” While infrastructure overcrowding is often a concern with high economic and residential development, in the City of Fishers there’s a watchful eye helping to ensure that as developments come online, impact will be minimized. Fishers Engineering Director, Jeff Hill, works quite literally around the clock to help build a road system that allows easy access throughout the city. Hill played an integral role in the grand openings of Portillo’s Hot Dogs, Fishers IKEA, and TopGolf all within weeks of each other. Jeff Hill and his team went to work a year and a half in advance to make sure that we could have these amazing amenities in our City, but also have thoughtful infrastructure plans to allow people to go about their daily lives. With his commitment to pursuing federal funds as he works to maintain Fishers’ road system, he will continue to be an invaluable asset for the entire community.

11

COMMITMENTS TO PLAY Fishers’ designation as the Money Magazine 2017 Best Place to Live was due largely to recreation opportunities and overall quality of life throughout the community. Last summer, Fishers Parks & Recreation announced plans to create a 60-acre waterfront park located near Geist Reservoir. The commitment to new parks, and unprecedented opportunities to play, will continue in the coming year. Geist Reservoir has always been an amenity unique to Fishers, but during his State of the City address, Mayor Fadness shared a desire for all residents to be able to experience this natural asset. The City of Fishers has plans to develop a 60-acre waterfront park that is accessible to the public in a meaningful way. Additional updates will be shared in the coming months about park construction, along with details about recreation programming coming to the park. The Nickel Plate District Amphitheater (NPD AMP), has become a premier concert venue in Hamilton County, hosting national

THE YEAR OF PARKS Fishers Parks & Recreation has declared 2018 “The Year of Parks,” a citywide celebration of community recreation areas and public greenspaces. This month, Think Fishers sat down with Fall Creek Township Trustee Doug Allman to explore the township’s plans for Fall Creek Woods, a new park project that will allow residents and visitors to unplug in the serenity of nature.

FALL CREEK WOODS Fall Creek Woods, an 80-acre property boasting amenities such as hiking, wildlife viewing, and fishing is coming to Fall Creek Township. Located on Fall Creek south of 113th Street between Olio Road and Southeastern Avenue, the new park will feature a canoe and kayak launch, promoting connectivity to Hamilton County Parks & Recreation’s Geist Park, the new Fishers AgriPark, and the Fall Creek waterway. The Fall Creek Township office also hopes to incorporate outdoor learning experiences for schools, scouts, and other groups. Part of the property is made up of 12 acres of previous farmland, which will be restored to native grasses and wildflowers to attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. A closed canopy of ash and sycamore trees cover the trails that will run along the creek, creating the perfect spot for wildlife sightings during any season. The park’s most unique features are the picturesque deep ravines and high bluffs that overlook Fall Creek, a feature that Fall Creek Township Trustee Doug Allman believes will differentiate the park from others in the area. “Fall Creek Woods will be unlike any public park or nature area in Hamilton County,” said Allman. “The topography will provide a natural and serene experience to hike. We want to keep the park natural, so people are able to view wildlife in its natural state.” Although the park is currently in the planning process, the Fall Creek Township Office plans to have grasses established in the farmland and the parking lot complete by the end of the year. Allman is quick to thank the Fall Creek Township Board, along with former Trustee Jeff Hern, for their vision in developing the park. For more information about Fall Creek Township, visit fallcreektownshipoffice.com.

Celebrate Sustainability Month with Keep Fishers Beautiful (KFB), the city’s largest annual day of service, which brings together residents, homeowner’s associations, local businesses, and organizations to support the vibrancy of the city and its neighborhoods. This year’s event takes place on Saturday, April 14, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at various locations throughout the community. In its fourth year, KFB has connected over 1,000 volunteers to service projects at various parks, greenspaces, and neighborhoods around Fishers. “KFB volunteers are making a difference in their environment and taking an active role in caring for public amenities that everyone in the community can enjoy,” said Dan Domsic, Community Engagement and Volunteer Coordinator for Fishers Parks & Recreation. Tony Elliot, Director of Fishers Parks & Recreation, added, “The impact from the day of the event is extraordinary, but the lasting legacy it creates derives from the community engagement that inspires ongoing volunteerism efforts throughout the year.” There are many ways the community can help Keep Fishers Beautiful this spring:

• VOLUNTEER PROJECTS Join volunteers to help beautify Fishers’ parks and greenspaces by mulching, picking up litter, and more.

• SPRING SERVICE DAY AT RITCHEY WOODS Spring Service Day returns to protect the park’s native wildflowers from invasive plant species. Register ahead of time or in-person at the rain or shine event.

• CITY RECYCLING DAY Fishers offers a free recycling day at Billericay Park for residents, where electronics, household items, and hazardous wastes are accepted. Paper recycling and offsite confidential document shredding is also available.
