ON DUTY IU HEALTH GRANTS FISHERS FIRE & EMERGENCY SERVICES FOR EMS DUTY OFFICER PROGRAM

6

When the Fishers Fire Department changed its name to Fishers Fire and Emergency Services in 2011, it was due to a shift in service need by the community. Recent studies indicate 40 percent of 911 EMS calls are primary care related. As a result, the same year the City launched WeCare, one of the country’s first community paramedicine programs, dedicated to providing higher quality care to residents in response to this shift in emergency service. WeCare addresses common health needs through non-emergency, proactive checkups by emergency medical service (EMS) officers for medical conditions including heart conditions, recovery after surgery, and fall prevention, and more. As the City turned its focus toward mental health in 2015, data analysis showed a real demand for nonemergent behavioral health care. Incorporating behavioral health into the WeCare program quickly became a key goal for the Initiative and with the help of Indiana University Health, this goal was realized in January 2019. Through a generous grant award of $43,680, IU Health will support the operating costs of the paramedicine behavioral response program for one year. This project expands the city’s existing paramedicine program to provide direct follow-up and support services for mental health

patients. Paramedics specially trained in crisis intervention will act as patient advocates and navigators. The program will also introduce new protocols that decrease patient stress and anxiety during emergency responses and will divert patients to behavioral services instead of emergency departments when appropriate. Fishers Fire and Emergency Services now has three EMS Duty Officers (EDO), one for each shift, dispatched for behavioral health runs 24 hours every day. The EDO will respond to mental health incidents with Fishers Police officers which allows for the Crisis Intervention Training (CIT)-certified paramedic EDO and the police officer to medically evaluate the patient and consult with mental health professionals and facilities to determine the most appropriate resolution for the situation. Whether transporting to an alternative location such as a crisis center, rehabilitation facility or, coordinating an appointment with a behavior care specialist later, the patient receives the needed level of services based on presenting symptoms. Following the incident, the Fishers Fire Department’s WeCare team will call the patient to inquire if additional assistance is needed, and work with behavioral health providers for a discharge follow-up

ABOUT WECARE

The WeCare program serves Fishers residents to improve the health and by proactively addressing the healthcare needs of citizens, enhancing community access to social services, and offsetting the financial challenges associated with healthcare reform. HOSPITAL DISCHARGE REFERRAL PROGRAM

In partnership with local hospital systems, paramedics will visit the patient within 24 to 48 hours of being discharged from the hospital or treatment center and together the patient and the paramedic can identify and resolve issues which might lead to another hospital stay. EDUCATION & AWARENESS

For more information, visit fishers.in.us/WeCare.

Residents may stop by any Fishers Fire station, obtain a free blood pressure check, and receive a card for tracking blood pressure readings that may be shared with their physician. FALL PREVENTION

The Fishers Fire Department has partnered with CICOA (Central Indiana Council on Aging), local hospitals and the Central Indiana United Way 211 information services to create community awareness of the program. Injuries resulting from falls are a major cause of EMS responses leading to hospitalization, second only to motor vehicle accidents. 63% of those injured are greater than 60 years of age, with hospitalization occurring 81% of the time. Home safety audits conducted by EMS to identify fall hazards are intended to decrease this problem. FREQUENT SYSTEM USER

Some individuals call 911 repeatedly because they or their family members are not familiar with the services that are available to meet their medical or social needs. By reviewing data, the department will identify those addresses and individuals that call for EMS more than three times in a 30-day time frame, contact the person and/or family to assist in identifying the reason for repetitive requests, and refer them to the proper resources. STATE CHAMPIONS

HAMILTON SOUTHEASTERN LADY ROYALS BASKETBALL TEAM BRINGS HOME THE HARDWARE by Kyleigh Fishers & Megan Pinson, Fishers High School In a rematch between teams less than 13 miles apart, the 4A Basketball State Championship Game was set for a showdown between Hamilton Southeastern Lady Royals and Lawrence North Wildcats at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Both teams were playing in the state game for the first time in their school’s history. The top ranked Lady Royals were facing a very tough Lawrence North team. In their previous match-up the Lady Royals beat LN 55-44 in a hard fought battle. Lawrence North was playing some of their best basketball come tournament time and the Lady Royals knew in order to beat LN a second time they would have to play together and have their best game of the season. The team had 2 mottoes during the season, “be us” and “be a nickel”. If the Lady Royals could accomplish both of those, they knew they could win the state title. As the Lady Royals took to the floor for the start of the game, the crowd roared with excitement. The game was a battle with both teams leaving everything they had on the floor. The Lady Royals remained calm and with a swift momentum change in the 4th quarter, HSE was pulling away from LN. At one point during the last few minutes of the game, Coach Huppenthal stated that he could “feel” the noise coming from Royal Nation. As the crowd continued to chant “We believe that we will win”, a sea of blue helped cheer on their Lady Royals to their first ever state championship beating Lawrence North 66-55. This was Coach Huppenthal’s first ever State Championship, something he and the HSE Lady Royals will be able to remember forever.

SAVE THE DATE! UPCOMING HSEVENING OF INNOVATION TO CELEBRATE LEARNING

by Emily Pace Abbotts, Director of School & Community Relations, HSE Want to learn more about what’s happening in your child’s school? Are you interested in seeing the work happening throughout Hamilton Southeastern Schools? Mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 1, 2019. HSE Schools is inviting the community to join in the Second Annual HSEvening of Innovation at Fishers High School. Last year’s event consisted of 85 innovative booths and playgrounds, where students and parents could witness first-hand the unique and deep learning experiences that are being had throughout the district. According to Director of Educational Technology Jeff Harrison, “the best thing about the HSEvening was that the students clearly owned the learning. At every exhibit, even with the kindergarteners, it was the students – not the teachers – who described their projects to the community.”

On tap again for 2019, the HSEvening will be a showcase of innovative projects and practices in classrooms today. Students and teachers from all grades in each of the 22 school buildings will take part. “For the HSEvening, we look for classrooms that are busting the paradigm of ‘schoolwork’. We want the community to see that learning is collaborative, creative, and empowering for our students,” says Dr. Susan Drumm, one of the event organizers. “We want them to know students today think critically about real and relevant issues.” Don’t miss out on the fun happening on May 1 inside Fishers High School as HSE Schools celebrates deep, rich, student-centered learning. The HSEvening event runs from 6-8 p.m. and is free to attend.

CURIOCITY: C.R. HEROES HELPS TO GET ELEMENTARY STUDENTS INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY by Megan Pinson, Fishers High School

The entire third grade class of Lantern Road Elementary has spent the last several months working with a local restaurant to help update their menu. Lantern Road’s principal, Danielle Thompson, along with assistant principal Kris Michael wanted to explore non-traditional ways to get their students excited about learning while involved in a project that would impact and better their community. It is all part of a new philosophy of experiential learning, called “CurioCity.” This type of learning fosters a connection to the community by exposing students to real work industry problems and solutions.

According to the students, keeping the research organized and coming up with special names for the menu items was the most challenging aspects of the project. Teaming up with people they were not especially close with to meet new friends was high on the list for the student’s favorite part of Enter CR Heroes, located off of 96th Street and Mollenkopf Road, a restaurant Fishers this project. They also said they enjoyed being able to work families know well. FISHERS ENGINEERING

CITY OF FISHERS’ DEPARTMENT SPOTLIGHT

When people think of city government, they usually think of people such as the Mayor, the Police Department, the Fire Department, and the Department of Public Works (DPW). Some people might not think of engineers working out of City Hall. However, their role is integral in managing the quality and efficiency of new and existing infrastructure throughout the city, including roads, trails, and drainage systems.

Those who work for the Engineering Department require a variety of different skills. Some of these skills are more technical, such as having an engineering degree, being familiar with technical aspects of site design, and knowing construction specifications. However, some of these skills are more universal, such as communicating with coworkers, finding a solution that everyone agrees upon, and staying organized.

Colleagues describe the department as being a close-knit, easy-going department that works well together. They say that even though they are faced with a lot of large and difficult tasks, by putting their heads together, they are able to get the job done well while having fun. In the words of department director Jeff Hill, “We do serious work, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously.”

When asked about why he decided to work in Fishers, Hill responded with this: “It’s a great community. It’s very forward thinking, thoughtful, strategic, and there’s a great vision here in Fishers.”

The engineers at the City of Fishers may not have a typical government job, but they play a very important role in the city and keep it smart, vibrant, and entrepreneurial. LOCAL BUSINESS HELPS RETAILERS IMPROVE CUSTOMER SATISFACTION As online retailers like Amazon and traditional retailers like Ann Taylor or Dick’s Sporting Goods grow their online sales, the customer isn’t the only one who benefits from the convenience of online shopping. Retailers are learning more about their customers today than ever before due to the amount of information and data collected before, during, and after an online shopping experience. Across all industries, big data is of increasing significance in improving company performance and efficiency. In the retail industry, big data is particularly impactful in providing insight to customer behaviors and satisfaction—keys to success in this sector. However, when it comes to collecting data, online-based retail is often at an advantage, as a result of social media, website tracking, and other methods to identify consumer behaviors. The notable advantage of online retail data collection, combined with the rapid increase in online consumerism, places stress and challenges on brick and mortar retail stores, when it comes to collecting data to improve performance and customer satisfaction.

connect brick-&-mortar with data In light of this growing truth, Everett Berry and a group of fellow Purdue graduates recognized a need and opportunity to provide missing data to brick and mortar stores, utilizing a resource nearly all businesses already employ to some degree: video surveillance. “After testing in five early adopters and doing hundreds of interviews, the team and I realized that many folks had business problems that they knew could be solved with cameras,” said Berry. “The fact that most businesses have this great data source in video, and aren’t leveraging it to get to know their customers is a real opportunity. PICKLEBALL PANDEMONIUM PICKLEBALL LOVERS ARE POPPING UP ALL OVER FISHERS & SPREADING THEIR ENTHUSIASM FOR THE SPORT Fishers Parks & Recreation is ready to serve up fun with a spin! Pickleball is the latest sports craze sweeping the nation and offering fun for all ages. A paddle sport that combines the elements of badminton, tennis, and ping-pong, pickleball involves players serving and volleying a plastic ball (smaller, but similar in appearance to a Wiffle Ball) over a 34-inch-high net on a 20-foot by 40-foot court. Free, public courts for the unique sport can be found at Cytheanne Park (12383 Cyntheanne Road), located on the northeast side of Fishers, where it is now home to eight pickleball courts and Hamilton County’s only public outdoor courts. Perhaps the most appealing element of the sport is its inclusive nature that bridges generations. As popularity for the sport grows, all ages are getting in on this fun and active sport. Pickleball is now being taught in school physical education classes, and Del Webb’s Britton Falls fifty-and-over community has a club that competes throughout the season. Fishers Parks & Recreation also plans to work with local pickleball instructor Team Witsken to offer lessons for beginner players this summer. Learn more at teamwitsken.com. Earlier this year, two additional challenge courts for immediate and advanced players were added at Cyntheanne Park through a generous donation from Steve Cage, a Fishers resident and entrepreneur. The courts at Cyntheanne Park have also been renamed Cage Pickleball in recognition of the generous donation. The Fishers Parks Foundation raised approximately $17,000 in additional funds during its pickleball court fundraising campaign, the largest portion of which came from an anonymous donor from Fishers. The Britton Falls Pickleball Club facilitated the fundraiser and its donation will be used to add landscaping, benches, and other amenities at Cyntheanne Park’s Cafe Pickleball courts. “Pickleball is a fun, inclusive sport for all ages and abilities, and the fastest growing sport in America. We are thrilled with the engagement from the community this past year to help communicate the need for additional courts at Cyntheanne Park, and to be able to raise enough contributions to build and complete them ahead of the proposed timeline,” said Sarah Sandquist, Director of Fishers Parks & Recreation. In honor of the new Cage Pickleball Challenge Courts, Fishers Parks & Recreation will celebrate the grand opening with the inaugural Pickleball Tournament on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27.
