COMMUNITY CALLED UPON TO HELP KEEP FISHERS BEAUTIFUL Volunteerism has a profound impact
on
those
receiving support and those donating their time to make a meaningful difference for someone else and in our community. Keep Fishers Beautiful (KFB) returns on Saturday, September 9th with opportunities for individuals and groups to roll up their sleeves and dive in for a good cause. This fall, KFB is themed Roadways & Waterways as volunteers work to beautify popular corridors in our community. For the most part, projects fall into two distinct categories: • Individuals interested in volunteering with the White River Alliance for the White River Clean-Up can register ahead of time at www.whiterivercleaup.org or on site the morning of the event. Volunteers of all ages are welcome, but parents, your supervision is required during the event. • Individuals interested in completing work in other areas will be charged with projects along various roads in Fishers. Additional details, including specific locations, will be disclosed closer to the event. Pre-registration is appreciated by August 28 for this project, and volunteers should be 16 years of age or older. To register, or if you have any questions, email Dan Domsic at domsicd@fishers.in.us or by calling him at (317) 595-3151. Volunteers will receive a t-shirt and free lunch for participating. All supplies will be provided, and no prior experience is necessary. Groups are encouraged to sign up together.

THE FIGHT FOR MENTAL HEALTH Momentum builds as Fishers’ Mental Health Initiative transitions into next phase, focused on community outreach 157. The number that sparked Mayor Fadness to act. In 2014, during a ride along with Fishers Police Department, Mayor Fadness learned of 157 immediate detentions on individuals who expressed a desire to hurt themselves or someone else. This realization was the catalyst for creation of Fishers’ Mental Health Initiative. During the 2015 State of the City address, Mayor Fadness announced the creation of a mental health task force to evaluate the state of mental health in our community. This task force brought together stakeholders from Hamilton Southeastern Schools (HSE), Fishers Police Department (FPD), Fishers Fire & Emergency Services (FFD), clergy and medical professionals who worked together to collectively answer: If a community was to marshal its collective resources around the challenges of mental health, what could and what should be done? If 2015 to present embodies phase one of the Mental Health Initiative, August 2017 kicks off phase two in Fishers. Phase two kicks off during Stigma Free Fishers Week, August 7th through 13th, and Think Fishers sat down with Mayor Scott Fadness, Fishers Fire Department Chief Steven Orusa and Superintendent of Hamilton Southeastern Schools, Dr. Allen Bourff for more on what’s ahead.
