GOING FOR GOLD HAMILTON SOUTHEASTERN SCHOOLS ARE NOW GOLD STAR BY I.D.O.E. by Freedom Kolb, Special Projects Officer, HSE Schools
The Indiana Department of Education (I.D.O.E.) has announced that all Hamilton Southeastern Schools have been designated as Gold Star Schools. According to the IDOE, Gold Star Schools have exhibited “the highest level of school counseling professionalism in Indiana,” and HSE Schools is one of the largest districts in the state to have all its schools certified. To receive the Gold Star award designation all HSE schools participated in a nine-month, rigorous process that reviewed student data, established student outcome goals, aligned efforts to counseling standards, and committed to maximizing the time school counselors spend in direct service of students. More than 600 local volunteers and stakeholders representing diverse perspectives supported the process through steering teams and advisory councils. HSE Schools Superintendent Dr. Allen Bourff celebrates the accomplishment by noting, “the Gold Star awards demonstrate the tremendous commitment educators, counselors and the public have to local students. I am delighted all of HSE Schools have been recognized for their outstanding collaborative efforts to support academic advising, career and college readiness, and social emotional learning. Together with parents and the community, we can continue to positively impact student success.” Comprehensive school counseling efforts rely on a strong community safety net where every adult is responsible for guiding students. HSE Schools will continue to build on this momentum by exploring teacher advisory programs, parent advisory programs, and community advisory programs. The Gold Star award presentation will be held at the annual Indiana School Counselor Association conference in November.

FISHERS BIZ SPOTLIGHT with
Think Fishers caught up with Lindsey Groepper, president of BLASTmedia, a national PR firm that calls Fishers home. Think Fishers: What is BLASTmedia’s 30-second elevator pitch? Lindsey Groepper: BLASTmedia is a national, B2B SaaS public relations agency that takes a holistic approach to PR, affecting multiple business levels. Through impactful media coverage, content development, and thought leadership, we influence customers, employees, and investors to listen, trust, and act. TF: What do you love most about being part of the community? LG: The fact that it truly is a connected community. There is a genuine shared interest among residents and business owners to help each other and advance Fishers' position as one of the best places to live. You get a sense of "Fishers Pride" across the board residents, businesses, and local government leaders. TF: What’s new for BLASTmedia in 2018? LG: For the last 13 years, we've executed media relations for technology companies - from scale-up to publicly traded - but have always had a passion for supporting the startup community both locally and nationally. This spring, we launched our first Startup Program designed to help early-stage, B2B technology companies gain the credibility and awareness they need through national media coverage. TF: What’s your team’s go-to restaurant, bar, or hangout in Fishers? LG: Wild Ginger and Sunrise Cafe. TF: To us, Fishers is a smart, vibrant, and entrepreneurial city and we know our businesses are too. Which of those words best describe BLASTmedia? LG: . All three! We are entrepreneurial in that, although we've been around for 13 years, we have a start-up mentality. All of our employees are team BLAST and buy into our culture and philosophies, as well as adapt to rapid change. Our industry is constantly changing, and as a result, we've been through multiple iterations of the agency offerings and value prop. One of our core values is "hustle hard" and we live by that each day.

THINK FISHERS’ NON-PROFIT GROUP OF THE MONTH
Youth Mentoring Initiative (YMI), which began serving Fishers in 2008, provides mentoring for students by building and sustaining a mentoring community with the highest level of service, integrity, encouragement, and empathy. 600 HSE students, grades 5-12, are identified each year who would benefit from having a mentor. YMI dedicates all resources to serving the Fishers community, and through a partnership with HSE schools, fills the need of a school-based mentoring program for students that encourage the development of personal values. While Fishers has experienced exponential growth and strives to be a smart, vibrant, and entrepreneurial city, there are many kids who face adversity or challenges. 37 percent of HSE students in grades 5-12 report having no sense of hope. 76 percent of students who had a mentor for more than a year said they felt better about their future. The benefits of a mentor have been proven through research, and in the Fishers community, YMI’s impact can also be expressed directly from the mentees: from simple appreciations such as having someone to talk to describing their mentor as a “second mom to them and showed them what love is.” One Fishers High School student expressed, “No one else cared to listen, but my mentor did.” For YMI, it all comes down to a child knowing they are valued and heard, and there’s an additional caring adult in their corner. The mentors have created a relationship with impacts that will last a lifetime, but the benefit is often a two-way street. Often mentors have said that they get just as much out of mentoring as their mentee. It is truly the students who shape and impact how the YMI program functions. The students challenge YMI to grow. They encourage the organization to think outside the box because of the rapid changes in the way they communicate and connect. Over time YMI continues to evolve, and has now streamlined and automated an onboarding process for mentees and mentors. Furthermore, they have brought their knowledge to the next level through local training on social/emotional health, trauma, and suicide prevention. YMI will also be adding a dedicated staff to the schools to meet the growing demand for mentors in the community. “The stories my daughters share about the struggles their peers are having at school or at home; it’s those stories that keep me up at night wondering how we can help, how we can make someone’s life better, says Executive Director of YMI, Alison Gatz.

THE HISTORIC MORRIS-FLANAGAN-KINCAID HOUSE WILL BE SHOWCASED AS CENTERPIECE OF THE USA PARKWAY ROUNDABOUT
Driving through Fishers on I69, motorists are surrounded by the bustle and growth of our smart, vibrant, and entrepreneurial city. The scenery is dotted with office buildings, retail stores, restaurants, and apartment buildings. But something stands out from the landscape of modern architecture — a 19th-century brick farmhouse, nestled alongside the interstate on the Navient campus. The iconic Morris-Flanagan-Kincaid House (commonly referred to as the Kincaid House) serves as a reminder of our community’s rich and dynamic history. Now, that history is being celebrated in an exciting new way through a partnership between the City, Nickel Plate Arts, and Hamilton County Tourism. The City of Fishers recently acquired the Kincaid House from Nickel Plate Arts, and later this year, the home will move to a prominent new location on USA Parkway. The historic home will serve as the centerpiece of an existing roundabout—reminiscent of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in downtown Indianapolis. support

FISHERS 2040: 2018 PROJECT UPDATE In June 2016, the City of Fishers officially adopted the Fishers2040 Comprehensive Plan. The plan outlines a framework for the future of our smart, vibrant, and entrepreneurial city, and ensures that the quality of life in our community today continues for generations to come. Over the past year, great strides have been made toward this vision, focusing on the following key areas of the plan:
LAND USE A driving force of land use is the growing business community in Fishers. In the past year, growth has included: Indiana IoT Lab-Fishers and the RQAW and Braden headquarters openings; the announcement of Flexware Innovation’s new headquarters coming to downtown Fishers; and the success of many start-up companies who call Fishers home. Expansion of the Nickel Plate District and updating zoning for the Fishers Tech Park are two other examples of proactive land use policy that will positively impact the city’s future.
HOUSING & NEIGHBORHOODS The City of Fishers’ goal is to promote diversity, quality, and a range of affordable housing options for residents, while creating a sense of place that is uniquely Fishers. Last fall, revised open space standards were adopted that focus on smart site design and purposeful open space. A new Greenway Overlay was adopted in late 2017 for the southeastern area of Geist District, strengthening connectivity as new parks amenities and development occurs. The City has also worked with Nickel Plate Arts and the Fishers Arts Council to add vibrancy to downtown through public art, including the new mural at Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream & Yogurt.
12
AUGUST 2018
TRANSPORTATION To prepare for the future, it is vital to maintain the quality of the city’s current infrastructure. In 2017, the City repaved and reconstructed 11.32 miles of roads, and replaced 300 sidewalk panels in neighborhoods. Expanding our infrastructure to suit the needs of our growing city continues to occur with projects such as the additional eastbound lane on 116th Street from Commercial Drive to Cumberland Road to align with the opening of IKEA, Top Golf, and Portillo’s. Currently, the City is working on several key infrastructure projects, including improvements to the intersections at 126th Street and 131st Street on Allisonville Road, and the construction of the Conner Trail. The pedestrian path will connect Conner Prairie to the Nickel Plate District along 131st Street and Lantern Road. An environmental study is currently being conducted for the Geist Greenway—a pedestrian path that will run along the power line easement, connecting Saxony to 96th Street—as well as master planning for the Nickel Plate Trail.
PARKS Fishers Parks are a major component of the city’s cultural identity and an important contributor to the vibrancy of the community. Fishers’ 24 parks range in size from one acre to 127 acres, and serve a variety of purposes for our residents. In 2018, the parks network has continued to grow, with the revamp of the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater and the dedication of approximately 35 acres of park land at 113th Street and Florida Road. This site is now home to the Fishers AgriPark, operated by Brandywine Creek Farms. The City recently finalized acquisition of the Geist District Waterfront Park property, and has worked closely with Fall Creek Township to advance their parkland development located around 113th Street and Southeastern Parkway. These projects, combined with the new AgriPark, will add approximately 185 acres of parkland to the Fishers Parks system. Quality of our parks remains of top importance. In December 2017, the Fishers Advisory Committee on Disability received the Champions of Inclusion Award from the Governor’s Council for their work advising on park design and providing insights into how we can better engage individuals of all abilities. This year, we were also proud to become the first city in Indiana to receive AARP’s Age-Friendly designation—a designation the Fishers Age-Friendly Committee has helped us to achieve. THE YEAR OF PARKS Fishers Parks & Recreation has declared 2018 “The Year of Parks,” a citywide celebration of Fishers’ vibrant recreation areas and public greenspaces. In celebration of this initiative, Think Fishers is showcasing one of 24 different Fishers parks each month.
CHEENEY CREEK Nature is waiting to be explored at Cheeney Creek Natural Area (11030 Fishers Pointe Boulevard). The 25-acre park is a secret wildlife oasis in the heart of Fishers and home to several unique amenities. From fishing ponds to greenways, Cheeney Creek is the ideal place to unplug this summer with friends and family. “Cheeney Creek Natural Area is one of Fishers’ most hidden gems,” said Tony Elliot, Director of Fishers Parks & Recreation. “The wooded park is perfect for residents and families wanting to spend time in the great outdoors by fishing, jogging, birding, or exploring the forest”. With nearly 2 miles of nature and multi-use trails, the park is a favorite spot among local hikers, nature enthusiasts, and birdwatchers. A grassland corridor runs along the Cheeney Creek Greenway and is the perfect place to unplug with a scenic hike in nature. The soft surface woodland trail runs along the banks of Cheeney Creek throughout the park and boasts some of the largest trees in Fishers. Looking for a relaxing day on the water? Bring your fishing pole and cast a line at one of the three designated fishing areas within the park, including a 3-acre pond stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish (a state of Indiana fishing license is required). Nature lovers will delight in this park dedicated to preserving wildlife and its natural habitat. Birders headed out early in the morning can hear both songbirds and waterbirds, and the woodland areas are known for abundant wildlife sightings, including deer, squirrels, and more. Various aquatic species also thrive along the park’s creek and beautiful bodies of water. Cheeney Creek Natural Area is open to the public to explore year-round from dawn to dusk. For more information, visit playfishers.com/CheeneyCreek.
