Five years later, it remains the only accredited department in the state. “We are proud to be Indiana’s first accredited agency. Being the first in the state and at that time the 87th agency nationwide speaks to our belief of the program,” said Eric Pethtel, Director of Fishers DPW. “We know for certain the process of meeting or exceeding the criteria for all of the related best management practices has put us on par with every

CONNER PRAIRIE MUSEUM 1859 BALLOON VOYAGE Conner Prairie’s mission is to inspire curiosity and foster learning about Indiana’s past by providing engaging, individualized, and unique experiences. In 2017, Conner Prairie served 50,000 people in Fishers through its daily programs, summer camps, and special events. The orange and white striped balloon—the star of the 1859 Balloon Voyage—has become a Fishers icon. The innovative museum experience transports guests of all ages 377 feet into the air on a tethered balloon ride above the city. The experience is part of the immersive, interactive exhibition depicting the historical voyage of inventor and pilot John Wise, who launched the first successful U.S. mail delivery from Lafayette, Indiana. Science, technology, engineering, and math come together with history in a one-ofa-kind voyage through time.

is to catch youth and families when they are in need and help direct them to resources so they can get on the path of wellness, productivity, and hope. Early Intervention Advocates are employees of the courts and the heart of the support system for FYAP families. This plan for early intervention proactively strengthens our community and empowers youth to achieve their greatest potential. INDIANA IOT LAB FISHERS When the Indiana IoT (Internet of Things) Lab – Fishers opened its doors in June of this year, it was welcomed with open arms by supporters in both traditional and technology industry. The Lab continues to see momentum after hosting events such as the IoT Hackathon, a tech-infused culinary experience with Chef Rober Irvine, numerous tours from major manufacturers, and more. The Indiana IoT Lab facility is designed to bring the emerging IoT sector together as a Lab for innovation and collaboration. Entrepreneurs and businesses will have the space they need to bring the four key components of IoT solutions together: ideation, cloud data, edge hardware, and development. Through the Lab, these entrepreneurs and businesses will launch the technology solutions needed to meet the world’s growing tech needs. For more information, visit indianaiot.com.
THE YARD AT FISHERS DISTRICT By far one of the most anticipated projects in Fishers is the culinary and lifestyle destination: The Yard at Fishers District. Since its groundbreaking in June, The Yard at Fishers District has seen the addition of luxury apartments, buildings starting to take shape, and the excitement grow. Not to be overshadowed by the announcements of exciting culinary destinations, such as St. Elmo’s 1933 Lounge, Sangiovese, Pier 48 Fish House & Oyster Bar, The HC Grill by St. Elmo, the development’s culinary accelerator, co-located with Sun King Brewery, will be the thing to watch in early 2019. The accelerator is a space dedicated to helping home-grown chefs and entrepreneurs test new food concepts and business models. It’ll be the place to experience new and exciting foods. Keep up with the latest at yardatfishersdistrict.com.

There’s rarely a dull moment in the Nickel Plate District and 2018 was no exception. Businesses opened new spaces: RQAW, Imavex, Spark Apartments, SPAvia, Main Street Poke, Ultimate Automation, Another Broken Egg, and many more. And others announced plans to build in the District: Flexware, BW Development, and Gilliatte’s Masterstation Building. As if that isn’t enough, the District hosted over 180,000 people over the course of its 2018 summer events, and we celebrated the grand reopening of the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater, new community meeting space at The Pavilion, and urban fountain.
THE NICKEL PLATE TRAIL More than 1,500 of Fishers residents shared their vision for the proposed Nickel Plate Trail by completing the statement: “I want 4.5 miles of….” This was just the start to a broad outreach campaign that involved residents, visits to classrooms to listen to student proposals, and public meetings. THE YEAR OF PARKS Fishers Parks & Recreation has declared 2018 the “Year of Parks,” a citywide celebration of the community’s recreation areas and public greenspaces. Every month during 2018, Think Fishers will explore one of 24 different vibrant parks around the City.
FLAT FORK CREEK PARK Tucked away on the east side of Fishers, Flat Fork Creek Park (16141 E 101st Street) is the perfect place to escape the busyness of the season and unplug in nature. The park, located at 101st Street and Cyntheanne Road, is just over 60 acres and boasts unique and diverse amenities and activities for every age, ability, and interest. Perhaps the park’s most well-known feature is the 60-foot sledding hill, which is the tallest point in Hamilton County. Every winter, children and families make their way to the giant hill with sleds and saucers in hand ready for a day of winter fun. During warmer months, children and adults hit the trails on the 1.25-mile progressive mountain bike course that winds throughout the woods and includes various ramps and technical features for both beginners and advanced bikers. Another popular amenity is the fishing pond, which is a favorite spot for residents to drop in a line and enjoy a day of fishing. A state fishing license is required to fish in the pond (ages 17 and under do not need a license). The park also offers several inclusive amenities to ensure play for all ability levels, including an ADA accessible treehouse that is perfect for observing wildlife or enjoying the scenic view of Flat Fork Creek. The paved multi-use trail and boardwalk that loop around the park are also accessible, and paved ramps lead the way to the top of the sledding hill allowing visitors and residents of all abilities to enjoy one of the best views in Fishers. In additional to being inclusive, the park also protects the environment. Nearly 20 acres of park are dedicated reforestation areas protecting the area’s local habitat. These areas are located near the entrance of the park, as well as throughout the progressive bike trails. A shelter with picnic tables is available to rent throughout the year and is the perfect area for outdoor birthday parties and family get-togethers. For more information and to rent the facility online, visit playfishers.com/Rentals.

This summer, Fishers Parks & Recreation is coming to a park near you! With an endless array of full and half-day camp programs, summer camps offer opportunities for children to explore exciting and vibrant topics while meeting new friends. Fishers Parks & Recreation offers three types of week-long camps for children ages 4 to 12, including nature, recreation, and specialty camps. With convenient locations, affordable pricing, and easy registration, parents love our camps as much as children do! This summer, Fishers Parks & Recreation will offer 36 engaging camps beginning the first week of June through the first week of August. With a focus on art, STEM, fitness, and nature, campers will enjoy sessions on coding, cooking, conducting messy science experiments, and other fun activities.
NEW THIS YEAR: GET A HEAD START ON SUMMER CAMP REGISTRATION! Registration for Fishers residents opens on January 14 at 8:30 a.m. and nonresident registration begins on January 21 at 8:30 a.m. Find more information and a complete list of camps at playfishers.com/SummerCamp. There’s no limit to the amount of camps your child(ren) can participate in, and each camp offers exciting age-appropriate activities, including active and passive outdoor recreation. Daily crafts, games, and activities keep camps engaging and ensure your child has a memorable and enjoyable experience.
