DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS CITY OF FISHERS’ DEPARTMENT SPOTLIGHT Fishers Department of Public Works (DPW) is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of all municipal assets. The impact of their work is felt throughout the entire community, from the streets, to the parks, to the schools, and beyond. “Citizens may not be aware of all of the ways they engage DPW every day, from driving to work, to sports practices after school, to enjoying events around the city,” said Eric Pethtel, Director of Fishers DPW. The department is responsible for 340 center lane miles of roads and associated right-of-way, and maintaining 1,300 acres of parks and school grounds and 35 buildings around the city. DPW also runs the wastewater treatment plant, which averages 8 million gallons per day, and oversees 22 lift stations and more than 20,000 storm and sanitary sewer structures. And that’s just a drop in the bucket when it comes to everything DPW does. “People lean on us the most,” said Pethtel. “When a citizen has a problem, they call Police and Fire, but when Police and Fire have a problem, they call us.” Pethtel has been with Fishers DPW for nearly 28 years, where he started as the department’s first inspector in 1991. He’s seen the department evolve as Fishers has grown from a small town to a bustling, vibrant city. While Assistant Director Eric Steiner has only been on board for eight months, he already feels right at home with the Fishers DPW team. “We’re not your typical DPW,” he explains. “We maintain 120 sports fields that welcome more than 10,000 kids a year. We set up for over 400 city events, from Spark!Fishers to Boo Bash. We’re always busy and every day is different.” Each winter season the department is busy battling the winter snow— or the “snow fight,” as they call it. Preparation begins in the spring, and Fishers DPW works year-round to ensure that they are ready for the winter season. Salt is mined in Toledo and brought to Indiana through a combination of barge and rail. Two salt barns are filled to the brim for the season, and a team of more than 140 snow plow drivers are prepped to ensure that the city roads are safe and clear.

This dedication to self-improvement is at the core of the Fishers DPW team. In 2013, Fishers DPW became the first accredited agency in the state by the American Public Works Association (APWA). Today, they remain the only accredited department in Indiana. The accreditation demands excellence, and the department works towards this every day.

“We’re always striving to provide the highest level of service to our “This department never stops thinking about the snow fight,” said community,” said Pethtel. Pethtel. “We’re always planning for it, and striving to do better than the year before.” STAY UP TO DATE BY FOLLOWING @FISHERSDPW ON TWITTER. Fishers.Indiana

CREATING A VIBRANT DISTRICT ART MOMENTUM IN FISHERS GROWS WITH STATEWIDE CULTURAL DISTRICT DESIGNATION FROM INDIANA ARTS COMMISSION The Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) Board has voted to officially designate the City of Fishers’ Nickel Plate District as a Statewide Cultural District. The designation was approved during December’s IAC Quarterly Business Meeting. The City of Fishers applied for the designation in September, citing the recent momentum around advancing art and culture in Fishers. This fall, the City was recognized as the Emerging Arts Champion of the Year by Nickel Plate Arts. This honor is awarded annually to an individual or entity that supports local arts and artists through collaboration, promotional efforts, and creativity. Over the last several years, public and performance art has popped up around the Nickel Plate District, located in the heart of downtown Fishers. Public art ranging from painted electrical boxes, to banners at The Edge parking garage, to a new mural at Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream & Yogurt, infuse creativity and vibrancy into the District. Last summer, the City debuted the newly renovated Nickel Plate District Amphitheater—home to the popular summer concert series and Fishers Farmers’ Market—and hosted the inaugural Spark!Fishers festival, a community celebration honoring Fishers’ history and culture. The annual Arts Crawl event, in collaboration with the Fishers Arts Council, Nickel Plate Arts, and the Nickel Plate District Business Council, connects local businesses with artists for a unique cultural experience. “We are thrilled to receive this recognition from the Indiana Arts Commission,” said Leah McGrath, Fishers’ Deputy Mayor. “This is such an exciting moment for our community. This designation signifies not only our commitment to advancing arts and culture in Fishers, but is also recognition of the vibrancy and cultural significance of the Nickel Plate District. The Statewide Cultural District designation helps to further root the Nickel Plate District and will guide decisions with community programming, architecture, public art, and more.” To learn more about arts in Fishers, visit fishers.in.us/arts.

DINING IN:

THE YARD

AT FISHERS DISTRICT

2019 is bringing many new things to Fishers, and with them comes the longawaited culinary district, The Yard at Fishers District, set to open in October. There’s been a lot of chatter around the new additions to the Fishers food scene, so we thought we’d give you an overview of the delicious food and drink coming this fall.

SUN KING BREWING COMPANY This iconic Indianapolis-based craft brewery debuted their first keg of beer in 2009, and over the past decade has grown into one of Indiana’s largest and most awardwinning breweries. Sun King is planning to open a 13,000-square-foot facility at The Yard at Fishers District, complete with a 3,000-square-foot rooftop patio. Enjoy a Sunlight Cream Ale, Wee Mac, or other signature brew while taking in the view of downtown Fishers.

FISHERS TEST KITCHEN & KITCHEN TABLE Co-located with Sun King Brewing, the eagerly anticipated culinary accelerator, the Fishers Test Kitchen, is an innovative space where start-up chefs can test their recipes and restaurant concepts for up to 18 months. You’ll be able to sample these creations in a large, shared dining space, similar to the set up at Indianapolis City Market. Additionally, the Fishers Kitchen Table will be a private show-kitchen where in-residence chefs and guest chefs can host demonstrations, private dinners, and more. This celebration of Fishers’ entrepreneurial spirit will not only offer a unique dining experience for residents, but also the opportunity for chefs to refine their menus and accelerate new restaurant, catering, and other culinary concepts.

1933 LOUNGE BY ST. ELMO STEAK HOUSE This restaurant/bar concept located at St. Elmo Steak House will open its first location outside of downtown Indianapolis at The Yard at Fishers District. The name—1933 Lounge—refers to the year that prohibition was repealed. This retro lounge will serve up signature cocktails and other libations, and will feature a bar menu with sandwiches, salads, steaks, seafood, and of course, the famous St. Elmo Shrimp Cocktail.

THE HC GRILL Replacing the formerly planned Burger Study at this location, The HC Grill will offer an upscale dining experience reminiscent of Harry and Izzy’s. The one-of-a-kind restaurant is a new concept for the Indianapolis-based Huse Culinary, which also operates St. Elmo Steak House, Burger Study, and Harry and Izzy’s.

KINCAID’S MEAT MARKET Bringing a bit of local history to the new culinary district, Kincaid’s Meat Market has been an Indianapolis mainstay for over nine decades. Pick up meats, seafood, and cheeses at this full-service butcher shop and meat market, which originally opened as L.E. Kincaid & Sons in 1921. Fun fact: The historic Flanagan-Kincaid House— the iconic brick farmhouse located on the Navient campus along I-69— was once owned by the Kincaid Family. The house will soon relocate to a roundabout on USA Parkway, just steps away from The Yard at Fishers District.

10

JANUARY 2019

HAVANA CIGAR & COCKTAIL LOUNGE The newest concept for the operator of Lava Lounge Indy in Broad Ripple, this swanky cigar bar and cocktail lounge will offer high-style craft cocktails and a hip atmosphere.

SANGIOVESE RISTORANTE Savor delicious pasta and meat dishes as you sip on fine wine at the second location of Sangiovese Ristorante, which combines the tastes of Italy with a fine-dining atmosphere. Sangiovese Ristorante opened in 1994 and boasts the highest quality ingredients and impeccable service. Insider tip: Ask the knowledgeable staff to suggest the best wine pairings for your meal. You won’t be disappointed!

PIER 48 FISH HOUSE & OYSTER BAR This new restaurant concept will bring a taste of New England to The Yard at Fishers District. Pier 48 Fish House & Oyster Bar will feature sea-to-table cuisine that utilizes sustainable, homemade ingredients. The menu will include locally grown produce, line-caught seafood, Midwestern grain-fed beef, and handmade pastas. Enjoy a taste of the sea from Pier 48’s patio or indoor dining room, or grab a cocktail at the full-service bar.

NICEY TREAT Enjoy a frozen treat from this pop-up shop and local favorite. Nicey Treat serves up handmade, all-natural popsicles made from scratch. Bonus: These frozen delights have no added sugar, so it’s a guilt-free dessert to cap off your culinary adventures! Feeling hungry? THE NICKEL PLATE DISTRICT WILL SEE NEW DEVELOPMENT IN SPRING 2019

12

In December, the City of Fishers, alongside Browning Investments and First Internet Bank, announced Fishers’ largest development to date. Browning’s $157 million project will feature residential, retail, a high-end boutique hotel, and will be anchored by a six-story office building.

“Browning is thrilled to be the master developer of this truly transformative project,” said John Hirschman, Browning’s president and CEO. “This is a complex in-fill redevelopment spanning a major thoroughfare, and its design and mix of uses reflects years of planning and a commitment to the vision for the City of Fishers.”

“There were some really historical figures in downtown Fishers, when talking about Archer’s and Nickel Plate,” remarked Mayor Scott Fadness. “Two years ago, both owners shared with us that they wanted to retire and it was at that moment that we realized there was an opportunity to do something impactful to the long term sustainability of our downtown, with their support.”

The north side of the development will be built by Browning and CRG Residential, featuring a 5-story apartment building with 241 units, 10 townhomes, office, and retail units along 116th, North, and Maple Streets, and a public parking garage featuring resident amenities on the roof. The development will incorporate the proposed Nickel Plate Trail and relocate the existing Pocket Park into a plaza gathering space.

The Nickel Plate Master Plan was adopted in 2014, and was developed through a community-input process that outlined the vision for downtown Fishers. The Plan’s downtown core outlines a dense urban development with residential living.

The iconic downtown buildings along the north side of 116th Street which are home to Nickel Plate Bar & Grill, Roman and Leo, Fishers Barber Shop, the former Vardagen and Sure Shot Coffee store, and State Farm Insurance are to be preserved with the exteriors and landscaping rehabilitated.

THE WINTER FARMERS’ MARKET FISHERS PARKS & RECREATION EVENTS SPOTLIGHT During winters’ long dreary days, there’s a bright spot on Fishers’ west side every Saturday morning as over 28 carefully juried vendors set up shop at the Fishers Winter Farmers’ Market inside the Holland Park building (1 Park Drive) from 9 a.m. to noon with a mission and passion to help customers find fresh and local food throughout the year. A tale of true entrepreneurial spirit, the Fishers Farmers’ Market, proudly features only Indiana-grown vendors, so all produce, baked goods, and prepared foods are locally grown and sourced in state. These entrepreneurial roots infuse the Winter Farmers’ Market, now in its third season, with stories of humble beginnings, hard work, and a sense of community. “Almost everything we do is with hand tools, so it’s a lot of labor but a lot of fun” said Zach Brown, owner of Grace and Truth Farms, which specializes in certified naturally grown and organic vegetables, fruits, chicken, pork, beef, and eggs. The farm was also a popular vendor at the summer Fishers Farmers’ Market. The small, family-run farm, located in Rossville, Indiana, got its start in a most unexpected way. “I was listening to a podcast about a guy growing vegetables and thought, ‘I could do that!’. I have always had a garden, so we just made the garden bigger!” said Brown. That led him to watch a YouTube video to learn more about farming, and the rest is history. The vendors and customers who frequent the market also instill a sense of local pride which steeps into the community as whole. “Even when it’s raining, you still get people coming out who are dedicated to buying local and being a part of the local movement. It really makes a big difference in the community,” said Jacob Baird, owner of Groomsville Popcorn based in Tipton County and a winter market vendor who also participated in this year’s summer market. Shoppers can check out playfishers.com/FarmersMarket to learn more about these and other Winter Farmers’ Market vendors, and follow the Fishers Farmers’ Market on Facebook and Instagram for special promotions, deals, and updates throughout the season.
