FISHERS BIZ SPOTLIGHT

with

Founded by Leigh and Sonia Bangs, and now owned by Indiana native Mike Ott, Bangs Laboratories has been part of the Fishers business community for decades. Think Fishers sat down with Chad Owen, president of Bangs Laboratories, at their growing office and lab space in the Fishers Technology Park to learn more about their products, science life and their love of Fishers. This life science company takes their job seriously (but not too seriously), and though their products may be difficult to explain to the layman, you can learn more at their light-hearted but informational feed, @ParticleDoc or Instagram BangsLabs. Think Fishers: Tell us a little about Bangs Laboratories. Chad Owen: Bangs Laboratories was founded in 1988, and manufactures uniform specialty polymer, silica, and magnetic microspheres. Our products are used primarily within the life sciences for diagnostic tests, assay development, sample preparation, and cell / biomolecule isolation. A simple, everyday example of our product would be athome diagnostic tests where dyed particles flow through a membrane and form the test and control lines that indicate positive or negative results. We also make products for use as standards and calibrators for analytical instruments such as microscopes, blood analyzers, and particle detectors. TF: Outside of your location, what’s your company’s Fishers connection? CO: We truly enjoy being part of the Fishers community. Our founder is still a Fishers resident. Many of our employees live in Fishers and have kids that attend Hamilton Southeastern Schools. We also employ HSE and Fishers high school students as interns throughout the year. It’s a great way to give real-world experience to future generations while giving back to our students. We enjoy the program very much. TF: What’s your favorite Fishers lunch spot? CO: My personal favorite is Wild Ginger but the overall favorite for the team is Flamme Burger. TF: What’s new for Bangs Laboratories in 2017? CO: This is a big year for us. We’re making investment in our facility as we continue to grow in our current space. We continue to provide new products for our clients as they innovate their technology, as a result, we’re constantly working on development of our products and providing the best possible, quality microspheres in our market.

A GREENER SIDE OF URBAN PLANNING FISHERS LOOKS TO ADD AND RENEW GREENSPACE TO THE GEIST AREA.

Fishers 2040, adopted June 2016, lays a framework for the city’s future as Mayor Fadness and team work diligently to create a community that grows in a sustainable way. The Land Use chapter of the comprehensive plan seeks to define future land use by setting a clear vision for the character and future growth of land in our community. This July, Fishers celebrates National Parks & Recreation Month with a look at the future use of greenspace as Fishers’ east side continues to develop. The land use plan aims to increase opportunities for outdoor recreation, improve connectivity on the east side of Fishers and allow access to amenities like never before.

70-Acre Waterfront Park Last month, the City of Fishers announced plans for a new 70-acre waterfront park along Geist Reservoir, located approximately at 111th Street on the east side of Olio Road. The dynamic infrastructure project offers diverse outdoor recreation activities, non-motorized water recreation, preserves green space and creates a rare amenity for Central Indiana. Simultaneously, the new park begins to address long-time concerns of the sustainability of the Geist area. “In

conversations

with

multiple

residents

and

stakeholders, I’ve heard time and time again the argument that the long-term vibrancy of Geist is a concern. Part of that involves environmental, boat traffic, and new development. My hope is that this park development helps to mitigate those concerns for residents and turns Geist into a distinct asset for all of Fishers,” said Mayor Scott Fadness. The City of Fishers has submitted an offer to purchase the land from the owners. Condemnation of the land is possible if an agreement cannot be reached, considering the public usage. Land acquisition is expected to take several months, with final design process beginning late 2017 or early 2018.

DEVELOPING IDEAS... Ideas will continue to develop as the City works with Fishers residents and local stakeholders, but conceptual designs of the park, to be named at a later date, show the possibilities of the park development. Future amenities could include a fishing dock, public beach, natural playscapes, and more! Public input opportunities will be posted as the project is underway.

Planning for the waterfront park will begin late 2017.
