HISTORY IN THE MAKING HAMILTON SOUTHEASTERN SCHOOLS & CONNER PRAIRIE PARTNER TO BRING NEW EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE TO FOURTH-GRADE STUDENTS by Kate Michael Student, Fishers High School A typical school day does not usually include a foray to the White River or tomahawk throwing, but a new fourth-grade classroom at Conner Prairie is anything but typical. Situated under the park’s amphitheater, a large storage room turned classroom serves as the home base of the recent partnership between Hamilton Southeastern Schools and Conner Prairie that is encouraging learning outside of the standard classroom. “So far we have had fourth-grade students from Brooks School Elementary, Thorpe Creek Elementary, New Britton Elementary, and Hoosier Road Elementary come out to learn,” said HSE teacher Amy Murch, who is now the teacher-in-residence at the Conner Prairie classroom. Unlike a normal field trip, fourth-grade students will now experience consecutive days of “study trips,” where the learning is built around a STEM lesson. This allows for the students to apply

CREATING THE NEXT GREAT

FISHERS EXPERIENCE

TOGETHER THE COMMUNITY SHARES ITS INPUT FOR THE 4.5 MILE STRETCH OF FISHERS’ NICKEL PLATE TRAIL Earlier this fall, the City of Fishers kicked off the Track to Trail initiative, a month-long outreach campaign to encourage the community to share their ideas for Fishers’ 4.5 mile stretch of the Nickel Plate Railroad transforming into a trail. Dubbed “The Nickel Plate Trail,” the Fishers portion will extend from 96th Street to 146th Street. In May, the City of Fishers announced the formation of the Nickel Plate Trail Master Planning Committee, led by co-chairs Fishers City Councilor John Weingardt and resident and owner of DELV Design, Amanda Welu. “Our goal is to create a one-of-a-kind experience, a new kind of public space that happens to have a trail running through it,” said Welu. To help create the next great Fishers destination, the committee selected NBBJ and Ex2 Partners to work collaboratively to facilitate a master plan for a unique experience along the Nickel Plate Trail. Ex2 Partners, an Indianapolis-based strategic consulting firm, worked with the City on the public outreach efforts this fall. “We are encouraging our residents to be bold, be original, and be heard,” said Weingardt. “It is a blank slate right now, and I can’t wait to see what this community working together can dream.”

Throughout

the

of

October,

suggestions continued to be accepted online, by mail, and in person at participating local businesses. By mid-month, more than 1,500 suggestions had been received. The City and Ex2 also hosted “think tank” focus groups with educators, students, entrepreneurs, artists, and public safety officials. The input phase concluded October 30 with a Community Conversation at Delaware Township Community Building.

Residents stopped by the Fishers Farmers’ Market for one of the community input sessions to let the City know what they most want to see included along the first 4.5 mile stretch of the new Nickel Plate Trail.

Even our youngest residents accepted the challenge, incorporating aspects of designthinking to contribute to the project. Third graders at New Britton Elementary are exploring potential trail amenities through mapping and geography, and the entire fourth-grade class at Harrison Parkway Elementary worked on using empathy to identify potential users of the trail and ideate amenities and events reflective of the needs of the whole community. “We’re truly starting at square one,” said Mayor Scott Fadness. “To create the next great destination for our community, it is vital that we engage our residents and hear their ideas and suggestions for what

Four different community input sessions were hosted during Track to Trail kickoff weekend on September 28-30 to solicit ideas from the public. Residents of all ages came out to share more than 600 ideas for the trail, which ranged from dog parks (and the world’s first cat part) to outdoor fitness centers, art exhibitions, pop-up retail shops, hammock areas, and meditation mazes, to name a few.

should be included. Our vision is that this is an experience that is uniquely Fishers, and captures the spirit and personality of our city.” The next phase will begin to shape the ideas into visual concepts that will be brought back to the community for further feedback and refinement in early 2019. The Master Plan will be completed in March 2019, and construction of the Fishers portion of the trial is anticipated to begin in Fall of 2019. FISHERS BIZ SPOTLIGHT with

Think Fishers sat down with Jobvite’s Andre Boulais, senior director of engage services, to learn more about the growing company’s Fishers office. Think Fishers: What is Jobvite’s 30-second elevator pitch? Tell us a little about you. Andre Boulais: Jobvite is the original social media talent recruiting platform that empowers organizations to attract, hire, and onboard candidates at the right time, in the right way, all the way through the acquisition lifecycle. We’re based out of the San Francisco Bay Area but have offices here in Fishers, New York, London, and Bangalore. TF: What is it that you love the most about being part of the Fishers community? AB: From a business side of things, the Midwestern work ethic paired with a dedication to innovation has created its own unique chapter in the American Tech saga. The Indy metro, and particularly Fishers, has a growing stable of companies that feed into the growth we’re seeing in the tech community. And as a bonus, I just love being part of the collaborative culture at Launch Fishers. TF: What’s new for 2018/2019? AB: This year, we doubled in size by mid-year and haven’t shown any signs of slowing down here in Fishers. We’ve grown out of three offices and into our dedicated office space inside Launch Fishers. As we look to 2019, we will continue adding more people and potentially expand past the eight different business units represented here currently. One thing is guaranteed: we’ll continue providing industry-leading solutions to utilize Jobvite’s award-winning software with global customers and hopefully a few new ones in Fishers. TF: To us, Fishers is smart, vibrant, and entrepreneurial. Which of those words best describe your business and why? AB: Jobvite has always been led by an entrepreneurial drive. We are disrupting the talent recruitment and management process every day. We are bringing new technology to the industry and we’re able to deliver measurable results. That requires us to continuously innovate. TF: What is your go-to Fishers dining spot? AB: We’re big fans of Four Day Ray, in the heart of Fishers’ downtown. We’re also known to frequent Portillos – it’s hard to resist.

Find out more about Jobvite by visiting jobvite.com or by following @jobvite on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

FOOD IN REVIEW

WHAT TO ORDER It’s hard to go wrong with this traditional Indiana tenderloin, but be sure to check out FDR’s seasonal menu as well.

AWARD-WINNING BREWERY SERVES UP MORE THAN JUST GREAT BEER

If you’re in downtown Fishers, it’s hard to miss Four Day Ray. And trust us, you shouldn’t. Located at the intersection of North Street and Lantern Road, the large industrial building is constantly bustling with patrons looking to enjoy the award-wining beer and delicious eats that have made Four Day Ray a Fishers hotspot. Longtime home brewer Brian Graham and partners Mitch Ackerman, Chris Welsh, and Matt Troyer opened the restaurant and brewery in 2016. A nod to the city’s Nickel Plate Railroad

THE YEAR OF PARKS Fishers Parks & Recreation has named 2018 “The Year of Parks,” a citywide celebration of the community’s vibrant recreation areas and public greenspaces. To celebrate the City’s parks, Think Fishers is exploring one of 24 different Fishers parks each month in 2018.

CUMBERLAND PARK From the roar of the crowd at youth soccer games to a relaxing walk in nature, Cumberland Park (10580 Cumberland Road) has something for everyone! The park is situated at the corner of 106th Street and Cumberland Road and boasts over 40 acres of play and adventure. On any given weekend, Cumberland Park bustles with activity. The park features Fishers Parks & Recreation’s only disc golf course, which has become a favorite among all ages. The 9-hole, 18-tee frisbee and disk golf course includes both amateur and pro tees. The view on the course is amazing as well, with several holes bordering lush trees and the banks of Mud Creek. Walkers and runners will love the scenic half-mile multi-use trail that meanders over the creek’s bridge and along the Mud Creek Greenway. Families and visitors can also relax and enjoy a picnic with tables and grills situated throughout the park. The park also showcases seven manicured soccer fields that are home to youth soccer leagues run by S.P.O.R.T.S. (Southeastern Program of Recreational Team Sports) organization, a not-for-profit dedicated to providing youth in the Hamilton Southeastern community. For more information about S.P.O.R.T.S., visit hsesports.com. The community building and attached park shelter are available for the public to rent for gettogethers, birthday parties, and more. For more information and to rent the building, visit playfishers.com/Rentals. Public restrooms are also available near the community building. Cumberland Park is open to the public year-round from dawn to dusk. Learn more and find additional information about the park at playfishers.com/Cumberland.

CHECK IT OUT! Cumberland Park is one of three drop off locations for the city’s Christmas Tree Recycling Program sponsored by Sambol’s Tree Farm. After the holidays, residents can drop off their bare, live trees to be recycled through February 1, 2019. To learn more and find other drop-off locations, visit fishers.in.us/TreeRecycling.
