fishers makes significant strides

in arts & culture in 2019

From new pieces of community art, to up-and-coming musical acts taking the stage at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater, to an expanded Arts Crawl series, there has been increasing momentum around arts and culture in Fishers over the past year. Last December, the Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) officially designated the Nickel Plate District as a Statewide Cultural District—signifying Fishers’ significant cultural assets in the downtown core, and the City’s commitment to enhancing arts and cultural experiences in the community. This year, the City introduced the Fishers Arts & Culture Commission to facilitate a more comprehensive and strategic approach to arts and culture in the city. The Commission seeks to engage and promote all forms of performing and visual art in Fishers in support of community and economic development efforts. Through the work of the City of Fishers, the Fishers Arts & Culture Commission, and numerous community partners, such as the Fishers Arts Council and Nickel Plate Arts, 2019 has been a busy year as new arts and cultural experiences are rolled out throughout the city.

new public art

This summer, the City installed a community-painted mural on the back of the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater. The mural was created in collaboration with Big Car Collective and painted by attendees at the inaugural Spark!Fishers festival in 2018. Another new artwork greeted attendees to the Fishers Farmers’ Market and Summer Concert Series at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater this summer. Be the I in Fishers was also recently installed on the side of the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater Pavilion. The artwork, which celebrates what it means to be uniquely Fishers, was originally proposed by fourth grade students at Harrison Parkway Elementary as part of the community-led master planning process for the new Nickel Plate Trail.

8

The students envisioned a Fishersthemed sculpture along the trail, where passersby would be invited to complete the artwork by posing as the “I” in Fishers. Through a grant by the Indiana Arts Commission, the City of Fishers worked with local artist Rachel Kavanthe to adapt the sculptural concept into a large-scale, graphic print. True to the student’s design, each letter is significant to Fishers or the state of Indiana. This fall, the City will break ground on a new graffiti wall at Brooks School Park. The concept was proposed by members of the Mayor’s Youth Academy (formerly Mayor's Youth Council) this past spring. This rotating art wall will measure approximately 6 feet high and 40 feet long and will feature eight panels with works from various artists.

expanded art programming

This summer, the City of Fishers and Fishers Arts Council expanded their annual Arts Crawl to a three-part series, with events in July, August, and September. With more than 40 participating artists and 20+ businesses participating in each event, Arts Crawl showcased the vibrancy and creative spirit of the Fishers community. In June, Fishers hosted the second-annual Spark!Fishers festival, with new additions focused on arts and culture. New features included an Artisan Market held in conjunction with the Fishers Farmers’ Market, and Veterans Hall, which showcased stories and memorabilia from our local heroes. This summer, Fishers Parks & Recreation amped up the Summer Concert Series at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater, adding some up-and-coming regional and national acts to the lineup. The series included shows starring Old Crow Medicine Show’s Chance McCoy, British sensation Jade Bird, and Grammy Award-winning artist Van Hunt. This marks a new direction for the Summer Concert Series, which plans to feature a more eclectic lineup in 2020.

community art master plan

Fishers’ Community Art Master Plan was first developed in 2014, and with all the changes and growth in our community over the past five years, we decided it was time for an update. The Fishers Arts & Culture Commission Master Plan Subcommittee was formed this summer. This subcommittee is made of local artists, entrepreneurs, educators, business owners, volunteers, and art advocates that will help guide the future of the Nickel Plate District Cultural Designation and the vision for arts and culture in Fishers as we update your community art master plan. To gather feedback from the community, our consultant Ex2 Partners led a series of breakout sessions, called Think Tanks, with Fishers residents, thought leaders, organizers, advocates, artists, volunteers, and business owners. NOT SO ELEMENTARY

SOUTHEASTERN ELEMENTARY OFFERS A NEW TAKE ON SCHOOL DESIGN Southeastern Elementary is not like any other elementary school you’ve ever seen. Its unique design focuses on encouraging active learning and collaboration through the use of learning neighborhoods and shared activity spaces. Its use of floor-to-ceiling windows allows for abundant natural light. Students and staff will thoroughly enjoy the interior courtyards and fun outdoor learning spaces. The two-story building features nearly 93,000-square-feet of learning space, which is similar in size to other newer elementary schools in the district. “What makes Southeastern Elementary truly unique,” according to Hamilton Southeastern Schools Superintendent Dr. Allen Bourff, “is the thoughtful design that removed long corridors of classroom wings that you find in traditional elementary school-settings. Instead, classrooms are grouped together to form student-centered communities that we call neighborhoods.” The building includes a total of five neighborhoods, each with six classrooms, three small group rooms, a STEM room, restrooms, and storage. “The interior of the building also features a high amount of transparency between spaces to support the concept of ‘learning made visible’ and allows for passive supervision from the classrooms to the activity commons and small group rooms,” said Jim Funk, principal at CSO Architects, designers of the new building. “Each neighborhood has direct access to one of the three small, multi-level interior courtyards, which brings natural light into the center of the building and offers each neighborhood a direct, secure outdoor learning connection.” Outside the building is a designated parent pick-up/drop-off lane that features a two-lane wide drive around the parking lot to create enough space to keep vehicles off the main road during the peak morning and afternoon hours. The bus lot is gated and doubles as a hard-surface play area for students during the school day. The $22 million facility was funded through a construction referendum that was passed by voters six years ago. Ground was broken on the project back in December 2018, and the doors were opened on the first day of school in August 2019, making this the 13th elementary school building for Hamilton Southeastern Schools.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR

AWARD IDENTIFIES EXCEPTIONAL TEACHERS WITHIN THE HSE SCHOOLS The Hamilton Southeastern Teacher of the Year program identifies exceptional teachers across the HSE school district and celebrates their effective work in and outside of the classroom. This year, a committee recognized Brooks School Elementary media specialist Maria Kussy as the overall winner among the 23 nominations it received. By serving students in preschool through fourth grade, she strives to build relationships with all students and colleagues through literacy, collaboration, and inquiry. She spends approximately half of her time in the media center building and supporting readers. The other half is spent collaborating in classrooms and co-teaching with teachers to support learners with lessons about broadcast, STEM, coding, and how to be a good digital citizen.

Maria Kussy, 2019 HSE Teacher of the Year with students

When integrating technology into her instruction, Mrs. Kussy creates an enjoyable environment to keep learning interesting for her students. She is committed to unlocking their potential by giving them opportunities to tackle real-world problems. She loves to engage students in an authentic learning experience that promotes student voice, creativity, celebration of learning, collaboration, communication, and empathy. Her passions include engaging readers in diverse literature. She and her students have worked hard to expand the library collection at Brooks School Elementary with books about race, culture, socioeconomic status, disabilities, and mental health. She contributes growth mindedness, courageous conversations, and integrity with her young readers. It’s important to her that her students live the motto - "treat others as you would like to be treated". A graduate of Marian University (2000) with bachelor’s degrees in Elementary Education and French, Mrs. Kussy is currently working toward a master’s degree in Educational Administration and Supervision through Ball State University. She's married to Michael Kussy, is a mother to five young boys, and is a foster mother, too. HSE chose to recognize Mrs. Kussy as Teacher of the Year because of her commitment to putting the needs of her students first and inspiring them to aim for success. During her time as an educator over the last 19 years, Mrs. Kussy has inspired every learner who has come through her classroom. She is known throughout the school for making reading and writing engaging and fun, as well as for her ability to get her students excited to learn. We want to congratulate Mrs. Kussy for being recognized as Hamilton Southeastern’s Teacher of the Year, and we hope that she continues to inspire her students for years to come. Plus, it’s no surprise that Mrs. Kussy has also been nominated for the IDOE 2020 Indiana Teacher of Year! Sending good wishes her way, although she's already a winner in our book!

FISHERS LOCAL BUSINESS FEATURE From predicting consumer behavior to identifying trends in workforce productivity, companies are increasingly turning to data to improve and streamline their workplace functions. Perpetuating the trend of data-based solutions in the workplace is the software startup known as Anvl. Born just over a year ago out of the venture studio, High Alpha, Anvl utilizes cloud-based technology to deliver workplace safety solutions to its customers, while increasing productivity among front line workers. “Anvl helps predict and prevent injuries and deaths with workforce-first safety solutions. [Our] products seek to break through the plateau by changing the way we engage frontline workers with safety and by capturing true leading indicators before an incident occurs,” said Anvl’s Director of Product, Diana Nolting. Since their inception just over one year ago, Anvl has dramatically increased their customer base, primarily focusing on the higher risk service-based industries, including construction and energy. “If you think about where workers are in those hazardous conditions, it could be any industry. It could be automotive, fleets, certainly the ones where you have a lot of high risk construction—energy, oil and gas, utilities, those are the ones that are really resonating right now for our prospects, and our customers,” said CEO Robin Fleming in a recent interview on Inside Indiana Business, with Gerry Dick. Anvl’s cloud-based software allows its customers to collect hundreds of employee and environmental metrics per day, providing real time insight to worker behavior and trends, impacting workplace safety. Available directly on mobile devices, Anvl’s software reduces paper-based processes and supports the development of a customer workflow, with the goal of stopping injury before it happens. "Our solution is a workforce first solution that we put in the hands of the frontline worker and their supervisors, and it works off-line, and gives companies great insight to information from a safety perspective,” said Fleming.

Fishers.Indiana

@FishersIN

Reflective of the growing demand to replace antiquated workplace processes with tech-based solutions, Anvl has demonstrated rapid growth in their year of existence, just recently securing $2 million of seed funding. In response to the startup’s impressive growth and acquired funding, Anvl recently announced plans to expand their operations in Fishers, investing $125,000 into permanent office space in the City’s downtown core. Contributing to the growing tech workforce of Fishers, Anvl plans to create 41 new high wage jobs by the end of 2022. “When we began exploring spaces and locations in Central Indiana in which to grow our business, we were immediately impressed by Fishers. The City of Fishers greeted our team as partners and facilitated an easy and seamless transition for Anvl,” said Nolting. “The City of Fishers showcased the locations, amenities and small business support that made our move an easy decision. We were quickly embraced not just into a new building, but also the business community as a whole.” Aiming to continue their notable growth, Anvl looks to leverage the benefits of their new location to build partnerships and expand upon their client base. “Anvl is excited to continue to help companies with workers in high-risk jobs predict and prevent injuries before they occur. We are eager to partner with companies ready to transform the way they approach safety in order to drive down the number and severity of incidents that occur. If your company is looking to improve the way it approaches safety, reach out to our team to learn more.”

To drive the point home, firefighters are placing a burned door prop in schools, businesses, churches, and community events in efforts to get people to not only sleep with their doors closed, but to keep them closed at all times. Doing this simple step stops the smoke from traveling from room to room and slows the spread of fire. This can add critical time for someone who is sleeping and slowly wakes to sound of working smoke alarms.

OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2019

Lisa Wagner, a Community Risk Reduction specialist with the department, teaches kids in the Hamilton Southeastern school system to make sure their bedroom doors are closed, and to open a window and exit the home if on the first floor. “If it's a second or higher floor, or due to limitations and they can't escape the first floor, kids and adults should throw articles out the window, such as stuffed toys or blankets, so when firefighters arrive to the scene, they will see these items below the window,” Wagner said. “This is an indication for firefighters to search these rooms first. This is especially important if the smoke has overcome the occupant and they have fallen to the floor unconscious." However, not all fires drive us from our bedrooms in the middle of the night. In fact, for Fishers, most fires are cooking or lightning related. The traveling door reminds residents that even a small stove fire can fill your home with smoke. If doors are open, that smoke travels freely, causing damage every inch of the way. In many cases, "stuff" can be cleaned but it's expensive and insurance doesn't always cover all expenses. Having a house fire is traumatic enough without the added stress of finding out you are under-insured for your property and contents. If you see the door out and about at a Fishers event, snag a "selfie" with it and share this information with your family and friends. It just might save a life! If your business or organization would like the door to visit your location, contact Captain John Mehling at mehlingj@fishers.in.us.

FIRE SAFETY CHECKLIST Firefighters recommend following the checklist below to help stay safe in the event of a fire:

• Change smoke alarm batteries when you change your clocks

• Change out the entire smoke alarm every 10 years

• Keep doors to rooms closed and close doors behind you

• Practice two ways out of every room with each member of the family

• Have a meeting place away from the house that everyone goes to once outside. Once out of the house, never go back in

• Meet with your insurance company annually to assure coverage is adequate. If renting, obtain renters insurance, as the building owner may not be responsible for your items
