FISHERS BIZ SPOTLIGHT

with

TM

As part of the Business Spotlight series, Think Fishers sat down with DeVeau’s School of Gymnastics Chairman Taryn DeVeau for an insider’s look at the local company. Think Fishers: Tell us about DeVeau's School of Gymnastics. Taryn DeVeau: My mom founded the business in 1982 with 185 gymnasts and 3 instructors. Today, we now have 53,000 square feet with over 300 competitive gymnasts and cheerleaders and around 1,200 recreation students.

While we have the largest

programs in the state, we are family-run and strive to keep the values that originally made us successful. TF: What’s one unique connection your business has to Fishers? TD: We moved here when Fishers was much less bustling than it is today. My mom originally purchased the land to build this facility because she knew it was a great location and she had a hunch Fishers was going to keep growing. We never knew it would become this vibrant of a community. Today, we have the largest gymnastics programs in the state of Indiana and one of the largest programs in the country. We compete on a national and international level, and Samantha Peszek, who was a gymnast with us since she was twoand-a-half, competed in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. TF: What’s new this year with DeVeau’s? TD: First and foremost, our expansion was a major undertaking and such an exciting part of our history. That expansion is helping us offer more programs and better facilities for our students. The expansion allowed us to increase our Ninja program now with a dedicated Ninja Room with obstacle courses, warp walls, trampolines, and a rig that is specifically designed for Ninja. This gives us the potential to host Ninja competitions at our new facility. We are also very excited for the expansion of our cheerleading program. Now we finally have two dedicated cheerleading floors, which allows our cheerleaders to practice on a floor similar to one they will compete on. We also have a new preschool room and competitive trampolines for our Trampoline and Tumbling competitive program. TF: What’s one of your favorite Fishers tradition? TD: We love the Fishers Freedom Festival and for years we participated in the parade.

LAUNCHING INQUIRY STUDENTS AT SAND CREEK INTERMEDIATE TESTS LIMITS OF GRAVITY by Emily Pace Abbotts, Director of School and Community Relations, HSE October is a much-anticipated month for children. There’s apple-picking, corn mazes and of course, dressing up in costume to go trick-or-treating. But for some 200 fifthgraders at Sand Creek Intermediate, October brings Punkin' Chunkin'. The event is what it sounds like – students launch pumpkins. It began last year, brought to reality by Sand Creek Intermediate Media Specialist John Hochstetler. He worked with three fifth grade science teachers to have students design, build and operate a device that could throw a pumpkin across the school’s football field. Once again, the students will be tasked with creating either a trebuchet, catapult or torsion for the 2017 Edition of Punkin' Chunkin'. “The kids just love it,” said Hochstetler. Students are given time to come up with a prototype of their machine and test it, before they bring it to life. “This is a perfect example of HSE21 in action,” says Principal Brent Farrell. “Punkin' Chunkin' touches on science, math and engineering. They are going through the process of figuring out their own answers to a problem.” Students will send pie pumpkins soaring across the football field with the goal of it landing the farthest. They’ll even have a little help in doing so. “One thing we’re incorporating this year is experts from actual Punkin' Chunkin' teams from the East Coast, explains Hochstetler. “We’re using a site called Flipgrid, so these teams will be able to introduce themselves to our kids and they’ll will be able to respond with a video saying, ‘I am having trouble with this or what do you think of this?’ The experts will then watch it and give feedback.”

prepare their trebuchets and catapults.

Having access to experts gives the students a unique opportunity to learn from others who live outside the community. Farrell says, “I think it can really only grow from here.” if you’re anywhere near Sand Creek Intermediate this month, look up. You may just see a flying pumpkin or two.

GRAND OPENINGS GALORE Fishers embraces new ways to unwind with IKEA, TopGolf, and Portillo's all opening this fall

Turning east off Interstate 69 onto 116th Street, it’s easy to see Fishers is no longer a quiet bedroom community north of Indianapolis. This fall our growing city will celebrate the grand opening of Indiana’s first IKEA, TopGolf and central Indiana’s first Portillo’s. These new venues bring unprecedented opportunities to shop, dine and play, year-round, without having to travel far! Let our Think Fishers team help you navigate these new opportunities to shake up your weekend plans, and offer exciting ways to experience the community with friends and family.

THE WEEKEND BREAKDOWN FRIDAYS New Ways to Unwind Let’s face it, sometimes Friday night is the only motivation needed to push through the hectic week! With an anticipated opening in mid-October, TopGolf Fishers will offer the ideal incentive to get through it all. Perfect for a gathering with friends, special date night, or family-fun night, TopGolf wasn’t just created for golf aficionados. TopGolf Fishers features over 100 climatecontrolled hitting bays, a rooftop terrace with fire pits, over 200 HDTVs, along with private event space and meeting rooms. While hitting in the bays, guests can catch up with one another, catch televised sporting games, and unwind. While you’re there, tap into the region’s top culinary talent; TopGolf features an accomplished Chef and chef-driven menu. With shareable portions and fresh, high-quality ingredients, all we can suggest is to arrive early! TopGolf Fishers will quickly be the place to be any day of the week.

SATURDAYS Made for Shopping Fishers starts buzzing bright and early on Saturday morning! With youth athletics and the year-round Fishers Farmers’ Market, there are things to do and people to see. The incentives to arise and seize the day will only intensify after the IKEA Fishers grand opening on October 11th. The arrival of IKEA in Fishers will offer endless opportunities to shop Saturday away, and Think Fishers has five things to know when shopping at IKEA: USE THE TOOLS Stands located throughout the showroom are filled with yellow shopping bags, a variety of shopping carts, pencils, tape measures, and shopping guides that will help shoppers record product information, navigate the store, and hold onto items until checkout.
