MAYOR’S LETTER This month is Parks & Recreation Month and there’s no better time to get out and explore our local parks and the many recreational programs and activities available to residents each week. Fishers Parks and Recreation provides exponential value to our community; from protecting open space and natural resources, to helping fight obesity, to providing activities and resources for all walks of life. I challenge you all to get out and play this summer. Explore a new park (we’ve provided some suggestions on pages 8-9). Take a look at the Fun Guide (on pages 12-14) and learn about the programs and activities available for you and your family. On July 11, I’m going to get out and play myself during the Mayor’s Mud Volleyball Challenge at Cyntheanne Park. The double-elimination style tournament will benefit the Fishers Parks Foundation. Learn more about Mud Day and the corporate challenge on page 10. Let’s all celebrate our excellent Fishers Parks & Recreation Department for all they do to provide opportunities for play year round.

Produced by the City of Fishers, Indiana, Public Relations Department, Town Talk is an official magazine for the City of Fishers, Indiana. Additional copies are available at the Fishers City Hall. For more information about the City of Fishers, visit us at www.fishers.in.us.

Traffic Signal will be added to Lantern Road and Commercial Drive Intersection Road construction season is here. This month, you’ll begin to see roadwork happening all around town. Your patience is appreciated as we work to ensure that our infrastructure is in good condition for years to come. To improve the intersection at Lantern Road and Commercial Drive in the Nickel Plate District, a traffic signal will be added to the intersection. Beginning on or after July 6, construction will begin. The entrance into the Northeast Commerce Park will be relocated to the east to align with Lantern Road. The existing stop signs at the railroad will be removed and replaced with gates and flashers. Commercial Drive is expected to remain open during the construction with the exception of some short closures while crosswalks are being constructed. More details on those closures will be shared as they become available. The construction is expected to last 100 calendar days. To stay abreast of all road construction happening throughout the city, sign up for weekly updates sent straight to your inbox at www.fishers.in.us/FishersAlert and opt in for Road Notices. #EngageFishers with @FishersDan

By Dan Domsic

I’ve driven out of the municipal complex late in the evening many times. Late work nights, late meetings, late concerts – I’ve become accustomed to what the Nickel Plate District is like at night. After leaving the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater following the last free movie of the spring season, I noticed something new. Typically, when I’ve pulled out onto 116th Street for the last time for the day, it seemed like I might be one of the few still moving around after the day was done. Coasting out toward 116th on that night at the end of May, I saw what I hope was an indicator that the Nickel Plate District is well on its way to being seen as the engaging and vibrant place it can be – on its way from being a great place to be in certain times of the day or on certain occasions to a great place to live, work, and play all the time.

The patio at Brixx, at 11:30 at night, still had people hanging out at tables. I can only assume that they were having a good time, as a shouted inquiry from a moving motor vehicle late at night would be a little strange, and probably, more than a little frowned upon by FPD. People out late enjoying what looked like a new kind of atmosphere for Fishers was great to see. This was after seeing multiple restaurants packed during dinner time. I’m excited to see how things evolve in the near future, as progress on new buildings brings in new employers, like Purdue University at the Switch. As concerts continue to get better and better. As the district remains a good place to spend time with the family. As momentum to be a smart, vibrant, and entrepreneurial city continues to pick up steam. I hope you’re excited, too.

Check it out: The Flashback Friday Concert with Eddie Money presented by WJJK 104.5 – The gates open for this edition of AMP After Dark at 7 p.m. on July 24. Keep your eyes out and ears open for chances to pick up tickets for another landmark show at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater, 6 Municipal Drive. MUD DAY

Returns to Cyntheanne Park on July 11 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Mud Day is a favorite event among Fishers kids as 20 tons of soil and 50,000 gallons of water are used to create a giant mud pit for two hours of play and friendly competition. Children have the chance to compete for the title of Mud King and Mud Queen and will be crowned before the event ends. It is recommended that children wear old clothes and shoes and bring a change of clothes and towels for the ride home. A DJ will play this summer’s top hits throughout the event and Kona Ice will be on site with cool treats for purchase. A small section will be blocked off for younger children wanting to squish around in the mud! Share your photos with us on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #FishersMud. Registration isn’t required, but all children must be supervised during the event. New to Mud Day this year is the Mayor’s Mud Volleyball Corporate Challenge. Mayor Fadness has issued a formal challenge to local Fishers’ businesses to compete in a doubleelimination mud volleyball tournament. Eight corporate teams of six, including the Mayor’s team, will compete for bragging rights beginning at 3 p.m. on July 11. All proceeds will benefit the Fishers Parks & Recreation Foundation. Sun King Brewery will be on site with beverages for purchase and Hot Box Pizza will sell pizza by the slice. Winners will receive a trophy and t-shirts designed by Vardagen. 10
