The NSW Mid and North coasts were blessed with a tremendous mackerel season through summer and autumn of this year. This well proportioned spotted mackerel was caught off Coffs Harbour by the FishLife crew. Photo by David Granville.

FishLife’s new backyard now includes the Nambucca River on the NSW Mid North Coast. This dusky flathead was captured sunning itself in the shallows of this picturesque and productive river by Scott Amon

Balance is especially critical in the world of surf fishing, where rods and reels are heavy to begin with. Funnily enough, adding weight to the butt of a surf rod to make it balance or even be butt-heavy/tip-light makes it feel lighter because the weight rests on the body rather than dragging down on the caster’s arm and back. Modern, high-tech spinning and baitcast tackle weighs a fraction of a sidecast outfit, but the same fundamentals of balance apply.

Dawn on the billabong is just magical. Not only is it prime bite time, it’s also the best period to take in all the sights, sounds and smells. 63
