Your heart is precious, and so are your memories
‘A long-awaited positive step.’ Make your legacy unforgettable as promising findings offer hope to thousands.
Who could forget the choices, events, surprises and happenstances that brought you to this very moment in time? Those pivotal cogs that set the wheel of life in motion and often only make sense in retrospect. In truth, any of us could.
So, news of, “a long-awaited positive step,” in keeping those precious memories alive, funded by the generosity of British Heart Foundation (BHF) supporters, is just as remarkable as it sounds. This promising research is only in its infancy and your legacy could be that one decision that helps change the course of scientific history – for countless people around the world.
Every five minutes, someone in the UK has a stroke. That’s as long as it takes to boil a kettle, to read these two pages, or to make a decision that could change the course of history. At British Heart Foundation we’re powering vital research to find new treatments for strokes including lacunar strokes – which are linked with nearly half of all dementias and account for more than one in five strokes in the UK.
Empty spaces
Lacunar strokes affect the small blood vessels – less than a millimetre wide – deep inside the brain. They were first named in the 1950s, when ‘lacunae’, or empty spaces, were spotted in the brain of those affected from them. Sometimes described as ‘small’ strokes, they can happen without the patient noticing. The more they happen, the more likely you are to develop problems with thinking or even dementia. This can be combined with mood disorders, depression or balance issues.
“For a long time, people thought all strokes were due to blood clots or blood vessels bursting,” says Professor Joanna Wardlaw. “Only recently have we realised there is a set of strokes caused by problems with small blood vessels. These milder strokes have literally gone under the radar,” she explains.
Professor Wardlaw is an expert in brain scanning and her internationally recognised research focuses on tr ying to prevent, diagnose and treat stroke more effectively. This includes a recent trial, funded by British Heart Foundation, which found that lacunar strokes could be treated for the first time by repurposing two existing drugs that are already being used to treat other conditions These findings are a vital step closer towards improving the lives of the more than 25,000 individuals a year affected by this form of stroke, in the UK alone.
This invaluable research provides a ray of hope to not only them, but their nearest and dearest too – as it strives to keep precious thoughts and memories alive.
Slowing the tide is just the beginning
The trial, led by the Universities of Edinburgh and Nottingham, involved 363 people who had experienced a lacunar stroke. As well as their standard stroke prevention treatment, for one year par ticipants took either isosorbide mononitrate or cilostazol individually, both drugs together, or neither
A year after the trial, participants that took both drugs were nearly 20% less likely to have problems with their thinking and memory compared to the group that did not take either drug. If these findings aren’t powerful enough, it was also found that these participants were also more independent and reported a better quality of life. Researchers hope that if the results are confirmed in further trials, the two drugs could be available as a treatment for lacunar strokes within five years.
These findings may help far beyond treatment, as Professor Wardlaw says there’s a chance that further research could indicate the drugs’ usefulness in prevention too.
“If it works in people who have had symptoms, it seems plausible it could work in people who haven’t had symptoms but are at high risk, perhaps due to family history,” says Professor Wardlaw. “It might be that you could use it as a treatment for people who haven’t had a stroke yet.”
This major step forward is only the beginning and with your help – the best is yet to come.
Let your legacy change the course of history for the better
Gifts in Wills from our donors fund over half of the research supported by BHF, research that has helped lower UK death rates from heart and circulatory diseases by 75% since the charity’s inception in the 1960s. Your contribution can be a part of something huge, leaving a legacy that will be an essential cog in the wheel of fighting conditions like lacunar strokes and vascular dementia.
Together, we can fuel visionary research that will bring hope to future generations and keep memories alive.*
Once your loved ones are taken care of, you could leave a gift too. It’s a quiet act that makes the biggest difference.

Managing a hedge feud
If you feel that your neighbour’s hedge is too intrusive, the first step is always to try to talk to them to see if you can come to an agreement.
It is advisable that you make a note of any conversations you have, because if matters cannot be resolved, your solicitor will need an account of your engagement to date, including emails and letters.
What if an agreement cannot be reached?
A property disputes solicitor can assist. From reviewing the properties’ title registers to establish whether there are any requirements relating to the hedge in question, to liaising with the local council, to corresponding with the neighbour. The early involvement of a solicitor may be a cost-effective option to try and bring about a swift end to the dispute. Neighbour disputes can, for obvious reasons, become emotionally charged and a property disputes solicitor can help focus on the core issue and achieve a solution that allows you to start enjoying your property again.
Is mediation an option?
Mediation with a qualified independent mediator can be an effective way to resolve disputes quickly, and at a fraction of the cost of court proceedings. It can be done with, or without, solicitor involvement. However, mediation requires both parties to consent to the process. Be aware, you are required to consider mediation or another alternative dispute procedure before you issue court proceedings. However, the parties are not obligated to agree, and you should only settle the dispute if you are happy with the terms proposed.
If settlement terms are agreed, parties should properly document those terms – even if that means instructing a solicitor at that very late stage, to draft a binding settlement agreement. This prevents the dispute from being reopened later and old issues relitigated.
Can you contact the local council?
You can make a complaint to the local council on the basis that the reasonable enjoyment of your property is being adversely affected by the height of the hedge. The same issues can also be dealt with by way of court proceedings. However, if the council is willing to pursue the issue, you may achieve a solution at their expense, rather than your own. The local council will consider both sides of the case and make a decision either rejecting the complaint or, declaring that work should be done to cut back the hedge to a height that’s based on the requirements of the person making the complaint and the hedge owner. The decision can be appealed. While you can refer matters to the council directly, a property dispute solicitor can also assist with this process.
Court action
If all other options have been exhausted, a property disputes solicitor can help you to bring a court claim against your neighbour. The early involvement of a solicitor is imperative to ensure a solid foundation for any claim.
For bespoke advice on your situation or if you require a qualified mediator, please contact B P Collins’ property disputes team on enquiries@ bpcollins.co.uk or call 01753 889995.

With its bright pink, tender stalks and pale green or yellow leaves is the inspiration for this delicious dessert adding acidity and colour, a great contrast to the sweet spicy ginger cake and goes beautifully with a spoon full of cremé fraiche or good quality vanilla ice cream.

Why everyone needs a Will
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to put off important tasks, and writing a Will is often one of them. However, having a Will is crucial for ensuring your wishes are carried out after your death and providing peace of mind to your loved ones. Heenal Chhipa-Gadday, Senior Associate in our Wills, Trusts and Probate team, highlights the importance of having a Will, and the steps to take in order to secure your legacy.
Why do I need a Will?
A Will is a legal document that outlines how your estate, including your property, money, and possessions, should be distributed after your death. Even if you think you don’t need one, having a Will ensures that your wishes are respected, and your loved ones are taken care of. Without a Will, your estate will be distributed according to the intestacy rules, which may not align with your wants.
What are the benefits?
Writing a Will offers several benefits beyond determining the distribution of your assets. Firstly, if you live with a partner without being married or in a civil partnership, they won’t automatically inherit your estate without a Will. Secondly, if you have children, a Will allows you to nominate a legal guardian who will care for them in the event of your passing. Additionally, a Will enables you to express your funeral wishes and can help mitigate inheritance tax.
What are the consequences?
Dying without a will, also known as dying intestate, can lead to complications and unintended consequences. The rules of intestacy determine how your estate Will be distributed, and these rules may not align with your preferences. For example, if you have a spouse and children, your spouse may only receive a portion of your estate, with the remainder divided among your children. In some cases, if you have no surviving relatives, your estate may be claimed by the Crown.
The process
Gathering information
Before your appointment, it’s helpful to gather relevant information that will assist in the process. This includes details about your assets, such as property, savings, investments, and valuable possessions. You should also consider any debts or liabilities, such as mortgages or loans. Additionally,
think about who you would like to appoint as the executor of your Will, the person responsible for carrying out your wishes that you trust.
Seek legal advice
During your appointment, the solicitor will guide you through the process. They will ask you a series of questions to understand your wishes and ensure your Will accurately reflects your intentions. The solicitor will provide advice on legal matters, including inheritance tax implications and any specific considerations based on your unique circumstances. After the consultation, the solicitor will draft your Will.
Review and signing
Once the solicitor drafts your Will, they will provide you with an opportunity to review it thoroughly. It’s crucial to carefully read through the document to ensure all your wishes are accurately represented. If any changes or adjustments are necessary, discuss them with the solicitor. Once you are satisfied with the final version, you will sign the Will in the presence of witnesses, who will also sign to validate the document.
What happens next Power of Attorney
While a Will is an essential component of estate planning, it’s also important to consider other aspects of protecting your interests and wishes. One such measure is establishing a lasting power of attorney. This legal document allows you to appoint a trusted individual to make financial and personal decisions on your behalf if you become incapacitated. By appointing someone you trust as your attorney, you can have peace of mind knowing that your affairs will be handled according to your wishes.
Regular updates
Creating a Will is not a one-time task; it requires periodic review and updates. Life circumstances change, and it’s essential to ensure that your Will accurately reflects your current wishes and circumstances. Significant events such as marriage, divorce, birth, or death in the family may necessitate modifications to your Will. It’s advisable to review your Will regularly and consult with a solicitor to make any necessary updates to ensure your legacy is preserved.

Unlocking Joy through a Pipers Education
“
At the heart of our educational mission, lies the profound belief that education is not confined to the mere accumulation of knowledge; it is a holistic journey towards the development of character, the nurturing of creativity and the cultivation of a profound sense of joy and purpose.”–
Mrs Helen Ness-Gifford, Headmistress.
Indeed, a Pipers education transcends conventional boundaries, casting open doors to a multitude of pathways for each and every one of their students, allowing them to experience and savour achievement and pride tailored to their unique aspirations and talents.
Harvesting Joy through Collaboration
Joy thrives in collaboration and teamwork. The Pipers’ Young Enterprise Teams, unsurpassed in the county, exemplify this by fostering a culture of independence where every idea is not just welcomed but celebrated, expanding horizons beyond limits.
Nurturing Joy through Courage
At Pipers, Students are empowered to seize the reins of leadership. Student-led assemblies, clubs and campaigns are the forge where courage is honed, raising awareness on real-world issues that resonate deeply with them, sparking joy through meaningful action.
Igniting Joy through Curiosity
Sixth Form students are encouraged to nurture their passions and explore their curiosities through Extended Professional Qualifications, igniting the spark of joy that comes from knowledge pursued with avidity.
Crafting Joy through Social Responsibility
The Pipers ethos is deeply intertwined with the desire to make a positive impact. Students eagerly engage in environmental causes while also participating in community initiatives, whilst gaining awards and global recognition.
Celebrating Joy through Creativity
Creativity knows no bounds at Pipers – be it through Art, Drama, Dance, or the many captivating productions managed and performed by Students in Piper’s professional 275-seater theatre. Here, students are encouraged to unleash their artistic spirits, finding joy in self-expression and exploration. While all educational institutions impart knowledge, at Pipers, teaching resilience and nurturing self-worth is as vital as imparting study skills. The outcome of this approach is remarkable - the happiness and fulfilment that students experience inevitably lead to academic achievements that rival those of the most-selective independent schools and grammar schools.
“While all educational institutions impart knowledge, at Pipers, teaching resilience and nurturing selfworth is as vital as imparting study skills”
PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS
The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions
Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.
Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated –as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.
The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.
“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”
In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.
The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.
Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.
“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

Shining a Light on Teaching
Whether you are a new graduate or interested in switching careers, qualified and ambitious teachers are in high demand. In all types of school - whether primary or secondary - there are numerous career opportunities for those who want to make a difference in the lives of our young people.
And whether it’s via a government funded, tax-free bursary of between £10,000 and £29,000, a student loan or an apprenticeship, there are a wide range of different ways to fund the training necessary to become a teacher. Age, too, is no barrier!
At Astra SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training) we work with over 60 primary and secondary partner schools and other local education providers across Buckinghamshire and beyond to train and nurture the next generation of teachers. Now in our tenth year, over 500 teachers have been awarded QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) with us. We aim to provide training and school placements that are carefully tailored to meet individual needs.
We offer various routes into teaching, all via a school-based course with an exceptional professional studies programme, in order to gain your QTS and PGCE. We are also able to offer part-time training on our primary routes and many of our secondary courses. We offer places both on salaried and bursary-led/unsalaried routes.
One of the great benefits to the Astra route is the blend of school based and academic training. Working with Bath Spa University we also offer the PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) qualification which
is the gold standard of teacher education. Astra’s programme is tailored towards teaching in schools in the local area. Training approaches include seminars and lectures, trainee presentations and assignments. The course is backed up by educational research, along with practical classroom based training. All trainees are supported by experienced school based mentors throughout the course, who will help trainees develop the knowledge and skills to become a confident, credible and successful classroom teacher.
We are also delighted to be starting a post-graduate apprenticeship programme starting September 2024. This offers a postgraduate-level qualification, no tuition fees, and the opportunity to earn while you learn. It is particularly suitable for those wishing to train in primary schools.
For life after training, it’s worth noting that we have over 90% employment and completion rates for all years to date, with the majority of our trainees securing employment in schools within Buckinghamshire and the surrounding counties.
So if you live or work locally and are looking for a fulfilling role, Astra offers you a rich career journey where you can make a real difference to young people in some of the very best schools in the UK. You’ll need at a minimum a good degree, GCSEs in English and Maths and a genuine interest in working in education.
If you would like to know more about our programmes and how to apply, we look forward to hearing from you.

Stylish winter boots trends
Stomp into 2024 in style with these must-have pairs, says
Katie Wright. The perfect combination of fashion and function, boots are a hard-working cold-weather staple and a great way to update your look in the New Year. For AW23, you’re spoilt for choice with a flurry of catwalk-inspired styles hitting the high street ready to complete your winter wardrobe. From sturdy stompers to elegant evening options, these are the boots to be seen in this season…
Knee-high boots
The biggest footwear trend of the season, long boots (hitting just below the knee or slightly above) have taken over from shorter styles as the celebrity-approved staples AW23. Embraced by the likes of Kim Kardashian and Selena Gomez, flat or block-heeled black knee boots can be teamed with mini skirts, midi dresses and more, and they’re a chic day-to-night option too.
Creamy colours
Chunky tread boots are still very much on trend, but this year for a fresh feel it’s all about pale hues. Part of the ‘latte dressing’ look, a beige or cream pair will complete any coffee-inspired outfit.
Stiletto heels
After years of super-thick soles and oversized
silhouettes, we’re now seeing the return of spindlyheeled boots. From neat kitten heels (seen on the runways of Christopher Kane and Jil Sander) to vertiginous stilettos (courtesy of Loewe, Hermès and Acne Studios) these boots mean business.
Bright soles
Want to add a pop of colour to brighten up winter outfits? A pair of bold-hued boots will do the trick. Take your cue from Bottega Veneta – the originator of the tyre tread trend – with a pair of chunky ankle boots with a neon orange, sunny yellow or emerald green sole.
All-weather boots
Taking the ‘hikingcore’ look to the next level, ultra-insulated all-weather boots are the catwalk trend that’s proving practical during this season of storms. Whether you’re hitting the slopes or socialising in the city, team padded boots with cosy knits and a puffer jacket for a sporty-chic vibe.
Statement silver
As decreed by Beyoncé and a slew of big-name designers, silver was the shade of 2023 and it’s not going anywhere yet. Metallic boots are an easy way into the disco-tastic aesthetic. Make Sixties-style block heels or western boots your daytime staple, or go glam with silver stilettos.

One of the biggest catwalk trends of the season, winter florals are here to bring some drama to your autumn/winter wardrobe.
Major players like Chanel, Balenciaga and Dior put petal prints and 3D flowers in the spotlight for AW23, with a focus on dark fabrics emblazoned with bright blooms.
London Fashion Week’s resident flowerpower experts, Richard Quinn and Erdem Moralıoğlu, put a glamorous spin on their favourite print, with sumptuous brocade suiting and exquisite evening gowns.
Winter florals are back:
How to wear the glamorous print trend
Flower-powered designs were all over this year’s autumn/winter catwalks. By Katie Wright.
Up-and-coming designer Conner Ives impressed with his collection – shown on the British Fashion Council’s Newgen catwalk –which featured a stand-out sparkly minidress with jewel-toned floral embellishments.
Midi dresses were a recurring theme on the runways – a look that’s easy to replicate on a high-street budget.
Layer a long-sleeved dress over a ribbed roll-neck and team with knee-high boots for a cosy winter ensemble, or go glam with a floaty evening dress and heels.
A flowery cocktail dress or co-ord set is perfect for party season.
To create a pulled-together look, choose a handbag that matches one of the accent colours in the print.
If you’re wearing a beautiful red or pink rose print, why not complete your look with lipstick in the same shade?
The edgy way to do florals, a sharp suit works for day or night. Dress it up with on-trend platform heels or down with minimalist trainers.
For a cool print clash, take your cue from the Emilia Wickstead catwalk and add a shirt or blouse in a contrasting floral print.

MA Time For Change?
By Alison Scott, Cognitive Hypnotherapist from Seed Wellnessonday 20th March marks the Spring equinox, when the sun crosses the equator and the hours of daylight and dark are of equal length.
For thousands of years, people have celebrated this as a time of balance, growth, new beginnings and wholeness, as nature bursts with new energy all around us. This is great news if you need to make some changes to your life as you’ll have the immense support of nature on your side.
The Spring Equinox is physically, spiritually, and emotionally a wonderful time of energetic opportunity. As the extra light begins to positively affect our brains, we find we have a lighter ‘spring’ in our step and we become more alert with increased feelings of optimism.
Astrologically March also welcomes in Aries. The ram rules with the head, leaning forwards with speed and focus, energy and childish wonder. We can all use a bit of that energy to forge ahead with anything new.
The changes you make now on will likely determine
the success of your year. We can welcome in fresh perspectives as we figuratively spring clean, throwing off wintry sluggishness - perhaps even detoxifying our livers and our lives.
This is one of the best periods of the year to focus on new projects, the perfect moment to get rid of anything that does not serve us, and to find the balance we need in life – whether that be with jobs, relationships or anything else.
Not many of us find change easy as it requires discipline. Otherwise called the ‘butterfly effect’, even small shifts bring about much bigger changes. If you get up 10 minutes earlier and do some stretches once, nothing changes. Do that every day and the benefits will become clear.
Hypnotherapy is one brilliant method to discover which limiting beliefs to let go of and focus on what you really want. It can help lift depression, reduce anxiety, boost confidence, and help with a whole heap of ailments, painful memories, and fears. Imagine it like being a spring clean for your unconscious mind.
10-Minute Spring Equinox Challenge
What could you do for 10 minutes each day that would change your life by the end of the year?
What could you do to help someone else?
What grateful thoughts could you ponder on that would boost your spirits?
Which 10 minutes do you squander that could be put to better use?

International Women’s Day falls on 8th March each year and is a day of celebration of the achievements of women worldwide. To celebrate this day in 2024, ProVen Probiotics is launching a gut-health related program specifically for women over 40 years of age, who are heading into or already in menopause
The Rebel Up plan is a 10-week program that incorporates key elements to help support a healthy menopause experience – with an understanding that digestive health plays a key role in relation to this transition.
How is the gut linked to menopause?
The answer is – in many different ways, including energy production, brain health, weight, hormonal balance and specific vaginal symptoms, the precise mechanisms of which are not all yet clearly understood, but which include the following five key areas:
On a basic level, the GI tract is the main route by which the body removes excess hormones and if the digestive tract is not functioning well, this can also impact liver function and detoxification, leading to imbalanced hormones.
Healthy detoxification and elimination pathways are required to clear unwanted hormones from the body effectively and efficiently and our gut bacteria play a key role in both of these pathways, with different bacteria strains binding to toxins and breaking down foods to help eliminate unwanted compounds from the body.
As we reach menopause, both oestrogen and progesterone levels fall dramatically. Low oestrogen levels are linked to reduced gut microbiome diversity and particularly a reduction of Lactobacillus bacteria, which are the key strains found in the female genito-urinary tract. This reduction in Lactobacillus has been shown to increase susceptibility to UTIs and other infections and has also been associated with vaginal atrophy and related menopausal symptoms, such as itching, burning and dryness.
Our gut bacteria interacts directly with our endocrine system. Some bacteria specifically help to regulate and metabolise oestrogen, helping to recirculate oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone and ensuring oestrogen levels are balanced in relation to other hormones.
Gut bacteria are also known to be involved in manipulating metabolic physiology and cortisol production and thus influence weight and energy balance, key issues for some women during menopause.
Based on these reasons alone, it is clear that supporting the gut microbiome with probiotics could potentially help to support menopause-related outcomes, with Lactobacillus species also providing specific support for the genito-urinary microbiota.
SUPPORTING WOMEN THROUGH THEIR GUT
Our For Women product has been designed specifically for the female microbiome. Each capsule includes 12.5 billion of our extensively researched Lab4 probiotics, which contains two Lactobacillus acidophilus strains, and an additional 5 billion Lactobacillus gasseri, known to be one of the most abundant strains in the vaginal microbiome.
ProVen Probiotics For Women also contains cranberry extract and vitamin B6 to provide further support for women’s health and hormonal activity.

MOVEMENT FOR MENOPAUSE
Cold water swimming ‘improves’ menopause symptoms – what other activities have been proven to help? By Abi Jackson
Cold water swimming has surged in popularity recently, with a growing body of science backing up its health benefits – and now research suggests it could help alleviate menopause symptoms, too.
A team at University College London (UCL) surveyed 1,114 women who regularly swam in cold water, including 785 who were menopausal.
Some 46.9% said cold water swimming helped their anxiety, 34.5% said their mood swings had improved, while a fifth noted reduced night sweats. As for hot flushes, 31.1% said this symptom had improved. Those who swam more regularly or for longer intervals reported greater benefits, the research found.
Commenting on the findings, published in Post Reproductive Health, senior author Professor Joyce Harper, of the UCL EGA Institute for Women’s Health, said: “Cold water has previously been found to improve mood and reduce stress in outdoor swimmers, and ice baths have long been used to aid athletes’ muscle repair and recovery.
“Our study supports these claims, meanwhile the anecdotal evidence also highlights how the activity can be used by women to alleviate physical symptoms, such as hot flushes, aches and pains.
“More research still needs to be done into the frequency, duration, temperature and exposure needed to elicit a reduction in symptoms. However, we hope our findings may provide an alternative solution for women struggling with the menopause and encourage more women to take part in sports.”
Here are some other activities with researchbacked benefits for easing menopause symptoms…
RUNNING (OR ANY CARDIO!)
Entering midlife and beyond doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to high-impact exercise. In fact, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists cites aerobic exercise – such as jogging and running – as an evidence-based lifestyle measure to help manage menopause. It’s never too late to start, either. A 2012 study which looked at how aerobic training affects symptoms in recently postmenopausal women who’d previously had sedentary lifestyles, found after six months, symptoms such as night sweats, mood swings and irritability had improved. High-impact activity has also been linked with supporting bone density in post-menopausal women – which is especially important as the drop in oestrogen that happens with menopause can cause weakened bones and osteoporosis.
YOGA
With reduced anxiety and inflammation among its many science-backed benefits, it’s perhaps no wonder research also suggests yoga could help
with menopause. One such study, published in 2022 in Nursing & Health Sciences, found yoga was particularly associated with improved sleep among peri- and post-menopausal women.
STRENGTH TRAINING
Resistance or strength-training exercise is especially important for women in their 40s, 50s and beyond – firstly because being strong helps manage the effects of oestrogen loss and that previously mentioned higher risk of osteoporosis. It also supports metabolic function, which is good news for health overall. One study published last summer found menopausal women who took up resistance training (this could be lifting weights or dumbbells, using the strength-building gym machines or even just your own bodyweight with a mat-based workout), had better muscle mass than those who only did cardio. While not a menopause symptom as such, women’s risk of cardiovascular disease can increase post-menopause – and regular exercise has been found to help with this too. One data review published last year found all forms of regular exercise – including aerobic and resistance training – were associated with better cardiorespiratory fitness after menopause.
HOUSE & GARDEN
ADDING PERSONALITY to Your Kitchen
Tori Young, Senior Interior Designer at HollandGreen tells you how.
The kitchen is the heart of the home and it’s often where our clients first start thinking about their renovation or upgrade. As an interior designer, it’s a great first room to get to know our clients and from there, often where the design concept for the whole scheme comes together.
The kitchen may be the engine room of family life, but that doesn’t mean it has to be function over form. There are many ways to inject design-led elements and create a stunning and characterful kitchen that is unique to you.
Joinery style. Think out of the box and move away from the norm. You can push boundaries by stepping away from traditional shaker-style units and opt for a flat panel door with a finger pull. Don’t be afraid
to mix styles, such as an elevated dresser-style island on legs next to painted cabinetry. Or a stainless-steel island is always sleek and practical.
Brave with colour. Be bold with your cabinets and paint them something other than off-white. If you are a little nervous, go for the pop of colour on the island - India Yellow by Farrow & Ball is one of my favourites. Pick a colourful cooker or paint the walls and ceilings a bright colour, keeping the units more neutral. Going for a clash can achieve an overall stunning look.
Open shelving. These give you an opportunity to add colour, texture and pattern. Whether your shelves are decorative displaying collected objets or whether
“The kitchen is the heart of the home. For us, it’s often the start of everything”Tori Young, HollandGreen
storing kitchen paraphernalia, they add interest to a room. Don’t be afraid to have an open pantry on display – it doesn’t need to be manicured like the images we see on social media.
Lighting. Good task lighting (over the hob and food prep areas) is paramount in a busy kitchen, but decorative lighting also adds a unique element to the space. Play with proportion and go for oversized pendants over the island.
Wallpaper and unconventional materials. A wallpaper in a kitchen is super-fun, especially behind open shelving. Opt for a practical Vinyl material which can be sealed for extra durability.
Texture & layering. Washable rugs on the floors or ruffle seat cushions on rattan bar stools can add depth, interest and texture by layering textiles and mixing materials.
Eye-catching backsplash. Go for a something a little different as a backsplash- whether a Moroccan patterned tile or a Verdigris copper metal finish, this is a great area to be creative.
Artwork. Introducing art in the kitchen, any subject matter you love, can become a focal point within the room, adding personality, height and colour.
Vintage accessories. Source antique or unique accessories, whether it’s tea caddies, copper pots or decorative plates, whatever you personally like. Displaying a collection of pieces is fun and eyecatching.
Biophilic design. At HollandGreen we are passionate about the environment and bringing well-being into our homes. Adding plants will give your kitchen a pop and forge a connection to outside. Plant some herbs in a vintage champagne bucket or have some aloe vera on hand for any kitchen burns.
If you’re renovating your kitchen this year, visit www.hollandgreen.co.uk for more design inspiration or call us on 01844 390 381.

MADRID COFFEE TABLE BERGAMO SOFA FURROW RUG SHELTER TABLE LAMP SANTIAGO SIDE TABLEDo I really need a design for my garden?
This is a question we are often asked, and the answer is usually ‘yes’.
As Design Director for a garden design and build company I may be a little biased, but experience tells me that having a design, results in a better garden.
Benjamin Franklin said, ‘If you are failing to plan, you are planning to fail’. One suspects he had loftier concerns then what to plant in a Westfacing border, but the adage rings true.
Clients often know what they want but don’t know where to start. My job is to bring those initial thoughts to life.
How does it work?
We start the journey by delving into your wants and needs for the garden at an initial free consultation. If you want to go ahead, a detailed survey and site analysis ensue.
Then then fun starts as the survey sits on the drawing board like a canvas, awaiting the pen and some creativity. Ideas are developed until a ‘Concept Plan’ is produced. This is a detailed plan of the garden with the layout, materials, mood board and key structural planting all outlined.
You may want a fully immersive 3D experiencethat can be done.
Like the design? Let’s get it priced. Don’t like the price? Let’s adapt the design. You want a garden, not a drawing, so we discuss and edit until we have the Final Design which is detailed, costed, client approved and used by the landscapers to deliver the build.
Finally, colour, scent and structure are added as we develop a planting plan to outline each plant and its location. Images of each plant are provided, so it isn’t simply a wall of Latin.
Colour, seasonal interest, maintenance, aspect and soil type are all accounted for.
The approach we take means that almost all of our design projects become reality and with a design to hand, you know what you are getting… ….a garden to enjoy.

Mark Taylor Design
Buckinghamshire Contemporary Kitchen
What was the client’s brief and how did you achieve this?
Our clients wanted a new space to accommodate a living and dining area with a large family kitchen and a very efficient utility room. We were given free rein to come up with the design, thus enabling us to use the space to maximise its full potential. The separation of the three different spaces (kitchen/dining/living) was paramount. Through space planning, lighting, colour changes and freestanding furniture we were able to keep each space separate whilst also ensuring they flowed and worked together.
The story or concept behind the design
We presented a series of ideas and concepts along with mood boards to help communicate our thoughts to our clients to help with their decision making. We used a subtle colour scheme and gentle detailing.
The wraparound garden was an important part of the design, allowing more natural light to the new space and bringing the outside in. A key feature is the stunning picture window.
Were there any obstacles you had to overcome?
Although it’s a large space, trying to put 3 areas in to one living space is always a challenge and means lighting and sound have to be carefully thought through, particularly where lots of natural light occurs. This was one of the reasons for one larger sky light in the middle of the space as opposed to 2 smaller ones, which were part of the original proposal.
It was also very important to get the lighting right and to create different moods for each area, depending on how they were being used and when. We achieved this with spotlights, floor lights, LED strips, pendant lights and table lamps. The cocoon hanging fireplace also contributes to the room’s ambience. It acts as an ornament when off, while adding warmth and intimacy when on.

Trends heating up in 2024 ACCORDING TO UK RADIATORS
The UK’s top heating specialists, UK Radiators, might be experts at keeping the home cosy and warm, but they are also on hand to tell consumers what trends will be hot in 2024. And according to them, three will dominate the heating sector next year: Laid Back Luxe, Dark Colours and Raw Materials. Rob Nezard, Managing Director of UK Radiators, said: “The homes and interiors sector has seen a steady move towards embracing bold design choices and this is now extending to long-term fixtures and fittings including radiators. “Standard white radiators are slowly disappearing as more homeowners banish the bland and inject statement pieces. Radiators that stand up in form and function will reign.”
LAID BACK LUXE
Grey tones can impart a sense of sophistication and luxury and are ideal for pairing with more rugged interior choices, such as the industrialism movement. Grey, with its neutral and versatile nature, serves as an ideal backdrop to showcase the raw elements in industrial design. Rob said: “A muted palette not only complements raw textures such as exposed brick and metal, but it can bring a touch of calm and ensure the space is inviting.”
DARK COLOURS
Brooding, dark shades are set to take centre stage in this year. Rob said: “A black or anthracite
radiator will add depth and drama. Mount it to a grey wall or contrast it with white for a more contemporary look.”
CHOOSE RAW MATERIALS
Biophilia, where natural materials are embraced, has been a key trend for a number of years, but Rob believes we’ll start to see more raw materials incorporated in the home in 2024 - including metallic elements. Think faded metal, unvarnished hardwood and exposed pipework.
Rob said: “A raw metal column radiator complements this aesthetic perfectly, bringing a mechanical, vintage look and a whole lot of heat.” ukradiators.com
