Happy Birthday La Quinta

An Essex-based restaurant celebrates its 22nd birthday on July 20th marking a prestigious milestone in the community for the family-run business

Restauranteur Simon Duke opened La Quinta in Benfleet with his brother Rupert to much fanfare in 2002 and has never looked back since.

They invested £2 million into the business, creating a 180-seat eaterie, employed a top chef, and then added a nightclub upstairs.

Delighted Simon, who lives in Hadleigh,  said:” This has been an incredible journey and I can honestly say the time has flown by. “We took a huge risk when we started, but my background has always been in the drinks trade, and now we can’t wait for the next 20 years.”

Using his experience within the hospitality industry, Simon was passionate about turning things around and built La Quinta, from scratch.

Now he credits his daughter Gina , 35, for help in keeping the business running smoothly with him and her uncle Rupert. “Gina keeps us on our toes, organising our tribute nights and choosing all the menus and the drinks. She’s thrown herself into all corners of the business, from washing up, waiting on tables and doing the meeting and greeting. “

Gina, who left school at 16 with 8 A grade GCSEs has thrown herself into her role and also recently developed a range of flavored tequilas named Mis Amigos which are now selling around the world. Since opening its doors in 2002, La Quinta has seen consistent growth even during the cost of living crisis all down to a loyal customer base, who enjoy the tribute nights including local favourite Freddie Mercury tribute act Gary Goodmaze and their multi-cuisine menu, alongside their bespoke ‘Cocktail School’. Founder Simon puts the success of the business down to his family roots

“Our parents and grandparents instilled in us the values of integrity, hard work, and dedication. These principles guide us in how we operate our business and interact with our customers and employees. They taught us the importance of doing things the right way, even if it takes longer”.

The birthday festivities will be led by Diane Horan-Hill and Miles Elliot of Heart and Soul, who will sing their club soul and party anthems during the evening.

“This has been an incredible journey and I can honestly say the time has flown by. We took a huge risk when we started, but my background has always been in the drinks trade, and now we can’t wait for the next 20 years”

Choosing the Right Early Years Setting for Your Child

When choosing the right Early Years setting for your child, it’s important to see what makes each place special. Although many nurseries and schools offer similar services, the best ones have unique features that stand out. The Oak-Tree Group of Schools is a prime example of excellence, with its engaging curriculum that supports all areas of a child’s growth.

Exploring the Oak-Tree Early Years

The Oak-Tree Early Years Foundation Stages include Lower Kindergarten, Upper Kindergarten and Reception. The schools’ settings are both fun and safe, making them perfect places for children to grow and encouraging them to be curious, play and learn cooperation and respect.

Curriculum and Learning Environment

At the Oak-Tree Schools, children as young as two and a half are immersed in settings that encourage creativity and independence. Challenging activities are designed to build their social, communication and emotional skills through play and structured learning. The Lower and Upper Kindergarten classes focus on early literacy and numeracy, including specialist subjects such as languages, art and PE. The schools also offer after school clubs and curriculum workshops that add more depth to the children’s learning experience.

Premises and Facilities

The layout and facilities of an Early Years setting should feature highly in your decision process. The Oak-Tree Schools use their surroundings in their grounds and locality to extend the learning beyond the classroom. This includes trips to Epping Forest, local fire stations, farms and nature parks as well as use of the well-equipped outdoor areas designed specifically for young children. Children have access to resources that, depending on the site, include libraries, computer suites, studios, extensive outside areas and banks of iPads.

Class Sizes

The Oak-Tree philosophy is to keep class sizes smaller than the norm, which means that teachers, teaching assistants and other support staff to give more focussed attention to each child. This helps to better understand

and support each child’s learning needs, which they regularly discuss with parents as part of the ongoing formal and informal feedback. The schools keep to low child-to-staff ratios, meaning that more staff are on hand to help and support.

Community

Starting at an Oak-Tree Kindergarten makes it easier for children to move up to Reception, Year 1 and beyond with the same group. There are no extra tests for moving up, which makes the transition smoother and lets children stay with their friends in a familiar setting. This consistency is important for the kids’ sense of community and confidence, and often leads to a closer relationship between pupils and the school.

Braeside School in Buckhurst Hill, Coopersale Hall School in Epping, Normanhurst School in North Chingford, and Oaklands School in Loughton make up the privately owned Oak-Tree Group of Schools.

Contact the schools directly to arrange a personalised tour. Open Mornings will be held in October. For more information visit www.oaktreeschools.co.uk

The Benefits of Transitioning at 11+

Deciding a primary school for your child is an important decision and for those opting to pursue the independent sector, there are now varying options as to whether to sit your child for 3+, 4+, 7+ or 11+. In some areas, even 5+ and 6+ options are available.

Whilst transitioning early into a ‘through’ school may appear to alleviate the pressure of sitting 11+ examinations, there are a number of reasons why this is not necessarily true. There are also strong arguments to support remaining in a primary school up until the point of 11+ – a familiar environment, pupil knowledge and the potential to flourish. Firstly, remaining in a through primary school provides children with a familiar and consistent environment. This safe and nurturing environment helps children to develop positive connections both with adults in the school and with their peers. It is these connections that develop and change as the child’s character and personality grows. For some children, these connections can be established quickly, whilst for others a longer duration is needed. By providing children with a familiar environment, we are able to encourage pupils to develop these connections at their own pace, whilst also providing a foundation for developing their own academic progress.

Developmentally, certain skillsets do not start to develop until post 7+ and therefore the ages of 7-11 years are still key in gaining an understanding of the areas that a pupil may thrive.

In addition to this, pupils in Years 5 & 6 experience both physical and emotional changes. They are starting to mature and become more independent and socially aware. Year 6 becomes a natural time of change for a child and the 11+ transition, a time at which a potential ‘fresh start’ is both welcomed and needed.

Finally, the aim of all education is to help an individual grow, develop and flourish. With the establishment of strong connections and a deep understanding of the pupils, the support and provision for the individual can also develop. By focusing on the individual development both inside and outside of the classroom with engagement via our 360-degree curriculum, pupils are given opportunities to learn more about how they feel, who they are and where they belong. This in turn encourages them to be a balanced and well-rounded individual, ready to flourish as they embark upon their next academic journey.

By the age of 10/11 years, not only have we, as teachers, gained a deep understanding of each pupil, but the children themselves are also more self-aware and understanding as to what they like and dislike.

Does my hair need SPF?

How to protect your locks in the

From dryness and colour-fade to scorched scalps, our hair shouldn’t be forgotten when it comes to taking care in the sun. By

We all know slathering on SPF is essential for protecting our skin in the sun, but does our hair need SPF too?

Technically speaking, not in the exact same way. In sun creams and lotions, SPF – which stands for ‘sun protection factor’ – relates to how much protection the formula offers skin against UVB rays (the type mainly associated with sunburn and a raised risk of skin cancer, while UVA rays are more associated with ageing).

These risks don’t apply with hair. However, our scalps do certainly need protecting from sunburn, which is where SPF can be very important. Also, the sun can leave our locks seriously frazzled and worse for wear, so protecting it will help it stay looking and feeling its best. Here’s what you need to know…

BURN-FREE SCALPS

Many of us have learned the hard way that it’s all too easy to scorch your scalp on a sunny day. “Any exposed area of skin is vulnerable to the sun’s rays. Whether you are wearing your hair in plaits and your parting is prevalent, or you have areas of thinning hair, you should be applying sun cream

“The sun can leave our locks seriously frazzled and worse for wear, so protecting it will help it stay looking and feeling its best”

sun

to these exposed spots,” says Laura Elliott, head stylist at haircare specialists Neal & Wolf.

“Ideally, you want to be choosing an SPF50 product and reapply every two hours. For precise and mess-free application, squeeze a pea-sized blob onto your finger, rub together as you would with any other haircare product and gently massage into the scalp.”

Concerned about greasiness? Elliott suggests: “Spray sun creams are much finer and less heavy than typical cream products, which can be thick and appear oily on the hair, especially after reapplying throughout the day.

“I recommend a mineral powder sun cream if oily hair is a concern. This can be applied easily with the product’s built-in powder brush, absorbing excess oils and leaving a matte finish. However, as many mineral powder sun protectants only go as high as SPF30, it’s important to be more vigilant with reapplication.”

Also, hats “should be non-negotiable”, particularly on sunny days and in any long stretches in the sun.

DAMAGED AND DRY LOCKS

Suzie McGill, artistic director at Rainbow Room International and current British Hairdressing Awards colour technician of the year, says: “With too much sun exposure our hair can become dry, brittle and damaged. The sun weakens the hair

BLOMMA BEAUTY INLIGHT HAIR ELIXIR

structure. It also strips the hair of its natural oils, which results in it feeling and looking rougher in texture.”

Colour fade is another concern when it comes to hair and sun exposure. McGill adds: “Prolonged sun exposure can result in hair colour fading and not being as long-lasting. For those with blonde/ lightened hair, including highlights, the sun can bleach out the melanin in the hair, which can result in the hair going lighter. Although you may think this is a good thing if you are looking to lighten your hair, this will affect the appearance of your hair, leaving it drier and more damaged.”

SUN-SAVVY PRODUCTS

“It’s so important to use colour-saving products, such as colour-saving shampoos, conditioners and masks to help hair colour look its best and avoid it fading,” says McGill. “The Schwarzkopf Professional Bonacure Color Freeze [available from Sephora starting from £13.70 each] range is great and includes a shampoo, conditioner and treatment to prolong the life of your hair colour.

“Using UV/heat protection products is also essential to create a protective barrier and keep hair in the best condition possible when exposed to the sun. One of my favourite products is the Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS Super Shield

which also helps tackle frizz, which is common following sun exposure, heat and humidity.”

Elliott adds: “Look for styling products with built-in UV protection, such as colour-hold products, hair oils, or volumising mousses. These will not only give that extra bit of sun protection, but also maintain perfect-looking hair. A heat protectant can help to prevent dryness after extended sun exposure.

“Heat protectants, such as the Neäl & Wølf Guard Heat Protection, can protect the hair from temperatures of up to 220-degrees Celsius. This will help the hair to lock in moisture and remain soft, smooth and glossy. Spray directly onto hair from root to tip after every wash and brush through to spread the product evenly.”

“Heat protectants, such as the Neäl & Wølf Guard Heat Protection, can protect the hair from temperatures of up to 220-degrees Celsius”

SOOTHE AND REPAIR

Elliott says: “If your scalp does end up sun damaged, try taking a cool shower, avoiding products that can irritate the scalp and using soothing treatments, such as aloe vera. Hot water will further irritate the burnt area, whilst cold water will help to soothe. Aloe vera gel can also hydrate and help heal the burn without creating additional oils.

“If your scalp has badly burnt, be prepared for peeling,” she adds. “This isn’t to be confused with dandruff and can be helped by applying hydrating and moisturising scalp care.”

And if your hair does end up a bit worse for wear after a heatwave or sunshine getaway? “The main aim is to retain as much moisture in the hair as possible and keep it nourished and hydrated. Therefore, hair masks/treatments are a must, alongside other great haircare products such as oils and creams that will give hair an extra dose of hydration,” says McGill.

“As the sun has already done damage to your hair, trying to avoid using heated styling tools where possible is also beneficial, to avoid any further damage. Instead, experiment with hairstyles such as low buns, ponytails and natural waves to give your hair a break.”

Boho Beauties

From revival on the runway to Sienna Miller’s return to the high street: here’s why boho is big right now and how to wear it. By

Last summer called quiet luxury to the forefront of fashion, with nautical stripes, raffia accessories and tailored linen populating both runways and high street stores.

However, with the highly anticipated Sienna Miller collaboration with M&S, it seems the polished prim and proper look is taking a backseat this summer.

It’s long been agreed that trends move in 20-year cycles, but with the rapid consumption of fast fashion, this gap seems to be closing. This is probably why it feels like only yesterday that we were emulating Kate Moss’ wellies and waistcoats.

Alongside the growing aversion to fast fashion, there has been a noticeable uptake in sourcing vintage this season, lending itself to the revival in printed maxis, layered and tiered tops and boho beads.

HERE ARE FIVE WAYS TO STYLE THE LOOK…

Boho beads and precious stones

Whilst Coco Chanel said before leaving the house take one thing off, boho-chic said put three things on. The secret to the nonchalance of bohemian style is through layering miscellaneous accessories and this season: bold beads. This summer, designers are letting the pendulum swing as long-line necklaces and sculptural stones make a comeback. Toe rings and colourful stones seen on the runway last season have seeped their way onto the high street, predicting an avalanche of stacked and statement jewellery this summer.

Clashing layers

Lace and linen

Two staple summer fabrics are lace and linen, they even sound light, these soft yet powerfully feminine fabrics are fundamental to a bohemian ensemble. Keeping you cool in extreme temperatures – lace frills and linen trousers never go a miss. Balanced with chunky jewellery and minimalist strappy sandals, they offer an easy and wearable boho look.

Statement embroidery

The idea of bohemia is to be unconventional, artistic and insouciant. So, combining eclectic pieces is integral to the look. Don’t worry if you’re not as confident as Helena Bonham Carter – an easy way to get started is through monochromatic layering that focuses on fabric over print. Try pairing an ecru structured jacket over a frilly cream top or a leather suede bag with a silk-satin dress. If you’re using one colour palette, such as creams and blushes, or blues and greys, combining clashing materials is an easy way to achieve chic bohemian nonchalance.

Boho chic often brings to mind blushed florals and paisley prints, but the overuse of these in the 2010s has left room for more interesting experimentation with print. Embellishment, embroidery and broderie anglaise are all distinct ways to add character to a laid-back look. From jackets to capes, embellishment can transform a simple look to an elevated statement.

Elevated denim

Boho-chic isn’t all floaty fabric – using structured denim can anchor an outfit, adding depth to an otherwise loose look. Skip straight-legged skinnies and experiment with wide-leg silhouettes featuring studded accessories. Pair with leather belts, ruffle tops and chunky sandals to create a 70s-inspired look.

The evolution of racing fashion

Ascot was last month, so Lara Owen looks at the changing style of race-day fashion.

Since its inception, race-day fashion has been as integral to Royal Ascot as its horses. The Ascot Racecourse was founded in 1711 by Queen Anne. For decades, it’s been a highlight of the fashion calendar, giving royals and British socialites the opportunity to show off their style.

HERE’S HOW THE FASHION HAS EVOLVED OVER THE PAST 100 YEARS…

The royal inception

The roaring Twenties saw the emergence of fanciful flapper dresses. The liberality of the 1920s was reflected in the racing fashion as women’s dresses became shorter and looser. More comfortable clothing was embraced, which contradicted the grandiosity of the Victorian era. The attendance of royals such as Lord Cecil Manners and his wife demonstrated the nonchalance of Ascot style, broaching a new decade of racing fashion.

Ruffles and riches of the Fifties

Following the utilitarian structures of the 1940s, post-war Ascot saw feminine fabrics and silhouettes reign supreme. The introduction of Christian Dior’s ‘New Look’ saw fuller skirts and cinched waists, allowing guests to elevate racecourse style with exaggerated silhouettes, hemlines and hats.

This was before strapless and sheer dresses were prohibited in the official dress code.

Florals and botanicals became signature styles for the summer season, particularly seen in the late Queen’s outfit to the 1955 event.

Fit and flare in the 1970s

Bold prints, relaxed cuts and a bohemian aesthetic was distinctive of Seventies fashion. Reflected at Royal Ascot, guests began to dress in more laidback ways evocative of the 1920s.

While florals remained a signature staple,

women experimented with wide-leg trousers, jumpsuits and excessive floppy hats.

Dubbed the ‘Mascot of Ascot’, hat designer Gertrude Shilling sparked interest for her eccentric and attention-grabbing looks on race day. Her audacious designs were a drastic move from previous styles and marked an era of racing fashion that celebrated individuality and personal style.

Shilling wasn’t the only attendee breaking with tradition, as women renounced dresses in favour of suits, shorts and jumpsuits, after trousers were added to the Royal Enclosure dress code in 1971. Nowadays, shorts are no longer permitted in any enclosure.

The introduction of stealth wealth

Following the exaggerated silhouettes of the Eighties, the 1990s race attire was anchored by Diana, Princess of Wales’ bold yet understated style. Traditional dress codes began to be heavily adhered to, but guests experimented in pushing boundaries by clashing contemporary and traditional pieces.

Characterised by what we now call ‘quiet luxury’, the 1990s combined simplistic and sophisticated tailoring with avant-garde accents. Ascot attendees found ways to incorporate their own personal style into modest ensembles.

Structured silhouettes and fluid fashion

The 2010s saw the acceptance of jumpsuits, and in 2017 fashion designer Daisy Knatchbull became

Enclosure.

As a result, sharp tailoring later became encouraged for women in Ascot’s style guide, reflecting a more androgenous and fluid approach to fashion.

The present day

Royal appearances have become leading sources of inspiration for race-day fashion. The Princess of Wales is a regular face at Ascot, setting trends for vintage prints and silhouettes balanced by monochromatic palettes.

Although the majority of attendees still adhere to its traditionally elegant and conservative attire, guests are certainly becoming more fluid by incorporating skirt suits, asymmetric cuts and structured tailoring into their ensembles.

It seems the 2020s are the years of classic tailoring and individual accents, and 2024 should provide a smorgasbord for unique expression.

5 OF THE BEST at Three days of design

It’s that time when the eyes of furniture fans around the world swivel north, as annual Danish design spectacular 3daysofdesign showcases the best and freshest interior ideas coming out of the Scandi nations and beyond. With renowned luxury behemoths sharing the spotlight with emerging talents, it’s where every Nordic name worth knowing gathers.

For its 11th year, the festival is bigger and bolder than ever. Enveloping Copenhagen’s shops, studios, streets and show spaces with refined and forward-thinking furniture as well as lighting, accessories, new materials and limited edition pieces in increasingly awe-inspiring exhibitions, it ignites a city-wide celebration of extraordinary design across 11 districts.

RFH COLLECTION - &TRADITION

A partnership between &Tradition and the Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation has led to the return of the RFH furniture series, five distinctive designs created for The Festival of Britain at London’s Royal Festival Hall in 1951 as part of Day’s first major furniture commission.

While the designs have been sitting pretty in the concert hall, foyers and public spaces of the iconic cultural venue for over 70 years, this is the first time some pieces are available to purchase, while others haven’t been available for decades.

ANAGRAM SOFA - VITRA

Based on the premise that everyday living has evolved past being focused on – and positioned around – the television and now needs to cater to an increasing array of activities, the Anagram Sofa by Swiss design studio Panter&Tourron was born. Created for its layout to be reinvented time and time again, this is a seating system deeply imbued with adaptability.

An ‘assortment of possibilities’ rather that a static object, Anagram is made up of a handful of modules and elements that can quickly and easily respond to daily needs, or lifestyles changes: from an exercise regime, sports final or cocktail hour to a house move or family resize. Oh, it’s ready for anything.

MONOLIT CHAIR - FRITZ HANSEN

Aesthetically in line with its namesake impressive stone structure, the characterful Monolit chair by Danish designer Cecilie Manz is composed of a wrap-around back rest shell which forms a protective and embracing wall around the sitter. Its sculptural and slender profile raises majestically from the floor, creating individual capsules of personal space that are both flexible and come-and-curlup-here comfortable. Small design elements highlight its refined status, such as the linear piping around the seat

“The characterful Monolit chair by Danish designer Cecilie Manz is composed of a wrap-around back rest shell”

which has a sharp, haute-couture feel in either full grain leather or coordinating with the upholstery, as well as the option for a contrasting inner colour (the outside remains mono-toned to emphasise its statuesque silhouette) and the hardy, horseshoeshaped metal foot.

EAVE SEAMELINE SOFA - AUDO COPENHAGEN

Winding and meandering into the contemporary home of tomorrow is the Eave Seamline sectional sofa; a wave of alluring upholstered contours characterised by curves, clean lines and customisation.

Composed of architecturally-inspired concave and convex forms, it’s made up of nine pieces –from corner modules to chaise longue segments and open sections – that are waiting to be neatly fitted together and playfully slide and curl their way around a room, reacting to its specific shape and needs.

SETTLE OUTDOOR COLLECTIONMUUTO

No matter where you are, come rain or shine – nestle into Settle, the latest result of Muuto’s collaboration with Norwegian design duo Anderssen & Voll. Erasing the boundary between indoor and out, the upholstered all-weather seating range – which includes a cosy lounge chair, a neat two-seater and a generous three-seater – brings the softness and comfort of the living room into the fresh air, and the lightness and sense of freedom imbued into outdoor furniture inside.

“Today, many of us live in a way that blurs the lines between interior and exterior. These spaces support each other. You can see that in design, as the distinction between indoor and outdoor furniture becomes less clear. We bring the comfort of indoors out with us. So, we designed a sofa and lounge chair for spending the best of times outdoors,” says Espen Voll. chaplins.co.uk

SUMMER HOME TRENDS

With warmer weather reviving our creative energy and putting us in a sunny mood, now’s the time to take your interiors to the next level with playful updates, stylish touches and pops of colour to elevate your outdoor space.

HERE’S WHAT’S HOT IN HOMEWARES AND LEADING THE WAY IN FURNISHINGS…

Clean Girl aesthetic

Inspired by the vibe of off-duty models, the Clean Girl trend is sophisticated and stylish, yet understated, says Anjelica Delfino, paint and interiors expert at Valspar Paint.

“This aesthetic is definitely more of a lifestyle than a fashion statement, and so it also extends to our interiors – a key part of the Clean Girl trend is minimalism and neutrals.”

This is easily infused into the home by opting for a neutral colour palette with accents of linen and wools to soften the space, says Delfino.

“Layering these textures elevates the home, ensuring it feels homely and comfortable, yet curated and luxurious – our homes are places of

protection, but also of rejuvenation from our busy and fast-paced lifestyles.”

“Decorating with indoor plants will also help create a calm atmosphere making your space feel more zen.”

Wabi-sabi styling

“The ethos of wabi-sabi has become increasingly popular in the interior design world and dates back to a traditional Japanese worldview,” explains Delfino.

“It’s all about celebrating the beauty of imperfection and the natural world.”

Wabi-sabi is known for its simplistic approach,

she says, embracing the unique qualities found in natural materials, which creates a tactile and organic feel in home decor.

“If you want to introduce wabi-sabi into the home but aren’t quite prepared to part with your belongings, an easy place to start is with decor,” suggests Delfino.

“Pairing a fresh, brilliant white with a deep, rich brown creates a sophisticated yet understated look.” She continues. “Nature is also a huge part of this aesthetic, so refresh the mind with accents of soft greens that blend seamlessly – and bring the natural world into the home, resulting in a calming interior.

Maximalism

Colour has been at the heart of many trends this year, paving the way for a new wave of maximalism in our homes, highlights Gisela Lancaster, head of buying at Sofology.

“Better known as Maximalism 2.0, this will be the summer of intricate patterns, bold colours and abundant textures.”

The one step change to previous years will be an avoidance of anything too overwhelming, says Lancaster, so here are three tips to achieve the right balance in any living space.

“Start with a cohesive colour palette to help connect the curated clashes in a calm and contemporary way – geometric scatter cushions, graphic curtains, bold wallpaper and a bright sofa can all work together as long as your colour palette remains concise.

Lancaster continues: “Don’t shy away from lime and orange citrus shades when it comes to furniture and furnishings… energising pastels can add real zest to both contemporary and traditional schemes, while welcoming the sunshine into our homes.”

“Mix modern pieces with reclaimed and vintage finds to add character and depth to these bursts of colour and pattern,” she adds.

Fun Fusion

The Fun Fusion trend is gaining popularity, and fast, says Daniela Venturini, art director and trend forecaster at Wayfair.

“In a time where people are keen to create personal sanctuaries and escape the doom and gloom of the real world, this optimistic style brings playful reassurance and a sense of light-hearted

spontaneity,” enthuses Venturini.

“Think bright colours and sculptural shapes to recreate the look!”

Fun, refreshing and accessible whatever your budget, she says it’s also ideal for outdoor spaces –both big and small.

“Extending that sense of self with a statement planter or some choice accessories, from bold drinking glasses to durable textiles, makes this an easy aesthetic to recreate.”

Retro Glam

“There’s a reason Retro Glam is a strong trend for this season and beyond, breathing playful nostalgia and reassuring comfort into our homes when we need it most,” notes Venturini.

“As more and more people seek familiarity, this considered combination of classic design, traditional detail and contemporary accents really appeals.”

To set the scene, think vintage-look lighting and pretty crystal glasses nestled next to neutral furniture, says Venturini, anchoring that drama for a harmonious finish.

“It’s easy to achieve this look outdoors too, whether you have plenty of room or playing with a smaller space.

“Simply mix jewel-tone velvet cushions with a wicker garden sofa, balancing textures and colour to create just the right amount of eccentricity –choose fancy glassware to add a touch of class.”

SUMMER LOVING

These are the hottest colour combinations for your home this summer.

Clever use of colour can create a coherent space-enhancing scheme and alter the feel of a space.

Your home’s colour combinations can impact your mood, and help create a cohesive look with your decor.

But before transforming any plain white walls, there are a few things to consider: starting with is the room for eating, working or sleeping? And what ‘feel’ are you hoping to achieve with the space?

“Colour plays an inherent part in the human psyche,” says interior designer Ann Marie Cousins, owner of AMC Design. “We know that each use

of colour will instil a feeling and emotion, and it’s important to channel that into our interiors for it to feel bespoke.

“Your colour story needs to develop throughout the house, both according to the function of the room and also the orientation of the room, and the temperament of the people who would use it the most.

“If it’s a small house, it is best to keep the palette consistent throughout and then add interest with colourful art and accessories,” she suggests. “On a larger project, there’s plenty of opportunity to be bold and really explore the personalities of those who live there with these new power hue combinations.”

So, what are the hottest colour combinations right now? Cousins shares everything you need to know…

BLUE AND WHITE

Blue and white is a classic colour combination which is seeing a return. “There is no rule book as such about the emotional impact of blue and white, but the shade combination is important in terms of mood, and we find it’s personal to each client,” says Cousins. “Blue has a reputation that it evokes feelings of the cold, but it very much depends on the hue. Just think of the difference between the blue of the Aegean Sea versus the grey-blue of the North Sea.” So, how do you know which blues to choose? “Think about the mood you wish to create in your space. If you would like an elegant room, consider a rich navy with white panelling and flecks of mustard textiles

“There is no rule book as such about the emotional impact of blue and white, but the shade combination is important in terms of mood, and we find it’s personal to each client”

to create a sophisticated and restful feel,” says Cousins. “However, if you prefer a more joyful and energetic scheme, opt for a light turquoise-like blue ground by F&B, paired with a soft white, like strong white, which will make you feel uplifted. “When choosing the right shades for your walls or ceilings, always test the colour first. A blue with a slightly cold undertone can look almost grey in a north-facing room, and a white which lacks warmth will look flat and unwelcoming in the same room. “Plan by buying samples of paint and wallpaper and placing them on the wall for at least two to three days before you commit,” she suggests. “Do remember you will need a disrupter colour to pull the scheme together. A dash of blush pink can add softness to your navy and white scheme, or a coral throw at the end of the bed can help to elevate and contrast effortlessly.”

NOURISHING GREENS

Bringing nature into our homes shows no signs of slowing down, either. “We are taking that one step further this year by immersing ourselves in a natural setting and nature scaping with nourishing greens. The concept is to provide a calming and grounding atmosphere which recognises the positive impact of nature on human wellbeing,” says Cousins. “One of the easiest ways to do this is to select your chosen green colour and combine it with a hue which falls opposite to the green in the colour wheel. “Pinks, corals and peaches teamed with green replicate gardens in full bloom, and so we are likely to see this emerge as a breakout palette. Dip your toe in and choose green, biophilic wallpaper and coordinating pink textiles, or go bold and colour-drench the room in your chosen green – skirting, doors and all – then complement with a statement pink rug.”

BLACK AND CREAM ACCOMPANIED BY ORANGE

Cream is a staple colour for many designers – a neutral base that feels warmer than white, so is great for living rooms and bedrooms. However, Cousins believes that paired with black and flanked by a burnt orange, this combination can be transformational and lift a flat room in an instant. “My favourite way to use this pairing is to pick a strong black and cream patterned fabric for curtains or wallpaper for a statement wall, and add a pop of bright orange on a bedhead, layering

abstract cushions or accessories,” she says. “This is a perfect way to modernise a dated or Victorian property without having to renovate.”

GO FOR GOLD AND JEWELS

Gold is associated with opulence and luxury, and Cousins says the use of gold gilding and gold leaf can really level up the drama in a space. “A raft of celebrities have chosen to utilise metallics in their homes, so it’s no surprise it’s trending as people replicate the luxe look. When gold is applied in spaces such as bathrooms, bedrooms and kitchens, it needs both a tether colour and also a paired neutral,” she says. “The complementing hues for gold are jewel-like tones, so a deep teal or sapphire blue can look effortlessly chic, especially in a bedroom or cosy living room, or a gold backsplash in a kitchen set against a moody blue or dark green cabinet and a warm white works so well.”

NEUTRALS HAVE HAD A 2024 MAKEOVER

Neutrals such as light grey, beige and creams are being replaced by strong earthy colour palettes or more statement versions. “Richer versions, such as terracotta and rust, work in harmony with beige to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Warmer blush colours are also coming to the fore,” says Cousins. “Little Greene and Dulux have some amazing pink variations such as ‘Masquerade’ and ‘Sweet Embrace ’ in their neutral palettes. With so many people gravitating to these warm blush or clay tones, the needle may be pushed further moving into deeper shades of purple over the next 12 months.”

“A raft of celebrities have chosen to utilise metallics in their homes, so it’s no surprise it’s trending as people replicate the luxe look”

The Art of Layering Tiles With Ca’ Pietra

Layers, you’ve got to love them. From the sweet sheets of mille-feuille patisserie to the fash pack’s favourite transitional wardrobe term, layering is an art that creates tantalising texture and moreish colour palettes and then some. And guess what? It applies to tiles too. So this season, pick your porcelain, claim your ceramic or select a stone and layer those tiles like a total trend-led pro.

The Tile Layering Trend, Unpacked

“This latest tile trend for 2024 celebrates the magic tone in mixing materials, finishes and styles of tile,” explains Grazzie, head of creative at Ca’ Pietra. “It’s back to those complementary contrasts and understanding how one tile’s character can

enhance another’s no matter how different they are so long as they have something in common to link them together.” Now that something in common could be colour like in this sultry rouge shower room where we’ve mixed the Maroc Porcelain tiles in Beige and Bordeaux to create a modern pinstripe effect alongside the plaster-effect Stucco tiles in red and ivory. That’s four different tiles in total, used in stripes, block colour and chequerboard effect all in the one space with the common thread of red linking them altogether. A tile layering masterclass you might say.

The Rule of Three

“I say rule, but rules are there to be broken. Use the rule of three as a guiding hand in tile layering

“This season, pick your porcelain, claim your ceramic or select a stone and layer those tiles like a total trend-led pro”

to make sure you don’t overload your room with too many types of tiles fighting for attention. I’m all for eclecticism but too much of it leads to chaos and none of us need more of that in our lives!” continued Grazzie.

Grazzie suggests as a starting point a large format matt tile mixed in with a glossy brick and a third that’s a more unusual shape. Heading into another bathroom for a working example, here we see a swoon worthy space by Roper Rhodes layering with fabulous effect. Reform Stone in Bianco serves up parquet floor shaping, Maroc Bianco gives the walls their glossiness and Savoy Porcelain on the walls and shower bench shine in their large format and dramatically veined glory.

Exceptions to the Rule

After more food for thought? For those more confident in layering, break the rules by working with bolder contrasts. This uber cool bathroom features the marble sheet mosaic tiles in the Bamboo format, letting them create a statement curved shower enclosure, combining them with an unexpected partner in crime on the floor – twotone granite-effect tiles. A marriage nobody saw coming but one that seriously works and proves

that layering can be done with fewer (but more impactful) pairings.

Next up, another example that features just two styles of tile but with great layering prowess in a dining room no less. Stucco strikes again with the raw plaster tones of Tan going onto the walls before flowing into a chequerboard floor that mixes in the darker Umber colourway. The final layer of contrast comes from the surprise appearance from Kinfolk in Ebony. A contemporary character that fits like a glove in the space thanks to the common colour ground it shares with Stucco in Umber.

And finally, here’s proof you can layer with as little as one shape and style of tile as exemplified by our new Marlborough tiles. The Natural Parquet takes to the floor before that same rectangular form gets stacked vertically in our new Green Gloss finish and White Gloss finish to create a neat line of division in the same way that a skirting board does.
