The garden is set in a total of eight acres. Three acres of formal gardens and five acres woodland planted in 2003. The formal gardens are divided into nine separate areas. The lawns are edged with mixed planting for different seasons from snowdrops, spring bulb displays through the summer plants and shrubs. There are many surprising statues and sculptures throughout the grounds.

The Design Museum in London is opening a major new exhibition on the history of Barbie™.

Three years in the making and opening to coincide with the 65th anniversary of the Barbie brand in 2024, the exhibition will explore the design evolution of one of the world’s most famous dolls. Journey into the Barbie universe and discover over 250 remarkable objects, dating from 1959 to the present day.

Through a unique new partnership with Mattel Inc., the Design Museum has been granted special access to the extensive Barbie archives in California, and dozens of rare and unique items will go on show to tell the story of the iconic brand over the past six-and-a-half decades.

Highlights include a rare first edition of the very first doll released by Mattel in 1959 (‘Number 1 Barbie’), the groundbreaking Day to Night Barbie from 1985 and the best-selling Barbie of all time, 1992’s Totally Hair Barbie which sold over 10 million across the globe.

Other dolls will highlight the diversity of the Barbie range, with examples of the first Black,

THE DESIGN MUSEUM presents 65th anniversary Barbie exhibition

Hispanic and Asian dolls to bear the Barbie name, as well as dolls that reflect today’s diverse, multicultural society, including the first Barbie with Down syndrome, the first to use a wheelchair, and the first to be designed with a curvy body shape.

The exhibition will be curated by the Design Museum Curator Danielle Thom and will map the Barbie legacy that started in 1959 when Ruth Handler wanted to craft a different narrative for her daughter, Barbara. It will go on to explore the story of Barbie through a design lens, including fashion, architecture, furniture and vehicle design.

Tim Marlow, Director and CEO of the Design Museum, said: “Barbie is one of the most recognisable brands on the planet and as we’ve seen recently, her story evolves with each new generation. I want to thank Mattel for collaborating with us through their extensive archive to help us tell this story. We look forward to displaying a whole range of eye-catching objects, some familiar but many never seen before, to showcase the evolution of design across the decades of Barbie’s world.”

Disney100: The Exhibition

Now re-open at ExCeL, London following phenomenal demand

Responding to overwhelming demand, Disney100: The Exhibition has made a triumphant return to the ExCeL Centre.

The 20,000 sq ft exhibition features an extensive collection of over 250 rare artefacts, artworks, costumes, props, and enchanting memorabilia from Disney’s timeless classics. Visitors have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in a century-long journey through the captivating history of The Walt Disney Company across ten themed galleries. Highlights include interactive storyboarding examples from Dumbo (1940), Marvel Studios character helmets, Captain America’s shield from Avengers: Endgame (2019), and an interactive Mickey & Minnie Diptych, skilfully crafted by London-based artist Dominic Harris, to narrate their enduring 90-year love story.

Throughout the exhibition, fans will be able to embark on a journey through the history of The Walt Disney Company with artefacts including an original Oswald the Lucky Rabbit graphite drawing from Sleigh Bells (1928), a story script page from Mickey Mouse’s historic debut in Steamboat Willie (1928), the Dutch-language prop storybook that

opens Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), a crystalline glass slipper from Cinderella (2015), an animation maquette for Remy from Ratatouille (2008), and the title character’s costume in Black Widow (2021).

Deciding a primary school for your child is an important decision and for those opting to pursue the independent sector, there are now varying options as to whether to sit your child for 3+, 4+, 7+ or 11+. In some areas, even 5+ and 6+ options are available.

Whilst transitioning early into a ‘through’ school may appear to alleviate the pressure of sitting 11+ examinations, there are a number of reasons why this is not necessarily true. There are also strong arguments to support remaining in a primary school up until the point of 11+ – a familiar environment, pupil knowledge and the potential to flourish. Firstly, remaining in a through primary school provides children with a familiar and consistent environment. This safe and nurturing environment helps children to develop positive connections both with adults in the school and with their peers. It is these connections that develop and change as the child’s character and personality grows. For some children, these connections can be established quickly, whilst for others a longer duration is needed. By providing children with a familiar environment, we are able to encourage pupils to develop these connections at their own pace, whilst also providing a foundation for developing their own academic progress.

Developmentally, certain skillsets do not start to develop until post 7+ and therefore the ages of 7-11 years are still key in gaining an understanding of the areas that a pupil may thrive.

In addition to this, pupils in Years 5 & 6 experience both physical and emotional changes. They are starting to mature and become more independent and socially aware. Year 6 becomes a natural time of change for a child and the 11+ transition, a time at which a potential ‘fresh start’ is both welcomed and needed.

Finally, the aim of all education is to help an individual grow, develop and flourish. With the establishment of strong connections and a deep understanding of the pupils, the support and provision for the individual can also develop. By focusing on the individual development both inside and outside of the classroom with engagement via our 360-degree curriculum, pupils are given opportunities to learn more about how they feel, who they are and where they belong. This in turn encourages them to be a balanced and well-rounded individual, ready to flourish as they embark upon their next academic journey.

By the age of 10/11 years, not only have we, as teachers, gained a deep understanding of each pupil, but the children themselves are also more self-aware and understanding as to what they like and dislike.

A Bespoke, Tailored Design

RHJB Architects recently delivered a full contemporary renovation and extension of this substantial period property.

The original house is a double-fronted Victorian villa, boasting a large southfacing garden and swimming pool within a generous plot.

However, the house was disjointed from the garden, and its layout was cramped and impractical in places. Their Clients wanted the house to be bigger, and the spaces inside needed to have an improved relationship to the garden and pool beyond.

RHJB always take a great deal of time to sit down with their clients, and this project was no exception. They delved deep into their aspirations, their loves as well as dislikes. This presented a thorough understanding of how they lived their lives, and what they wanted to achieve going forward. This personal approach means that RHJB’s clients can be assured they will be provided a bespoke, tailored design.

This home is located within a Conservation Area.

Using years of experience with Listed and Period properties, RHJB were able to successfully prepare a design that was well received by the local planners, achieving permission from the first application. As a Client, you can be assured that RHJB’s experience and attention to detail will minimise your risk.

The design perfectly marries old and new. At the rear, the classic rich red Victorian brickwork is complimented with elegant, glazed elements, and charred black timber cladding. Large, floor-to-

ceiling thermally efficient glass doors and two large roof lights fill the new open plan space with natural light. This improves well-being and provides a sense of calm. Using the latest technologies, the home is now extremely energy efficient, keeping running costs to a minimum. To the front, the house has also been sympathetically extended to match its original Victorian proportions.

The new open-plan kitchen, dining and living spaces have been expertly styled to contrast with the traditional feel elsewhere in the house. The kitchen was a bespoke design prepared by RHJB’s in-house interior design experts and hand-built to their exacting standards. By exposing the structural steelwork, a light industrial feel is achieved. The original home is enhanced, but its spirit remains with a modern twist. Whether it was a bespoke hob extraction system or a concealed door to another room concealed behind a noticeboard, every client detail was meticulously considered and addressed. Externally, the existing swimming pool was

extensively refurbished, and the garden was remodelled and landscaped to complement the works to the house. Now, materials flow seamlessly from inside to outside, including the hand selected porcelain tiles. When the doors are slid back, the garden becomes part of the house. Extensive landscaping using red brick, concrete and porcelain creates a luxurious outdoor entertainment space. A custom barbecue and outdoor kitchen area with a matching polished concrete table, all designed by RHJB, provides for at least 12 people to dine and relax in one sitting.
