Welcome the New Arrival Sustainable Scandinavian Designed Children’s Interiors Award winning Danish Interior design brand, Cam Cam Copenhagen has specialized since 2012 in earth-friendly kids room interior offering well-thought, high quality, contemporary furniture and nursery accessories that fit harmoniously into every home.
Home Scandi Home! Run by Architects duo, couple and parents Sara Giese Camre and Robert Warren Paulsen, Cam Cam Copenhagen designs are respectful of both the Scandinavian design tradition and childhood memories. The minimalist designs are enhanced by the attention to the smallest details, iconic prints, peaceful colour tones, delicate craftmanship and well-thought functionality. Cam Cam Copenhagen continuously seeks to exceed parents’ expectations for a modern interior for the child´s room, with products that are made of sustainable and organic materials, enduring design and quality, whilst also built for extended use and longevity. They also use their own experience, as parents of 4, in the designs, which support the contemplative and poetic moments which are so precious and important during the first phase of life. The new 2-in-1 play gym and tent product, which Robert designed reflects entirely this philosophy. The life span of the play gym has been extended so that the play gym’s a-frame folds out into a play tent with a space big enough for the child to invite small playmates inside up to the age of 6 years. Sara’s delicate hand drawing can be found in the bamboo dinnerware and baby books. The forest animal theme is a reference to the animals you will likely spot during an autumn walk in the Danish forests. Whilst the soft books with their crinkle sound and unique artwork offer great surroundings for storytelling and activating all baby senses, the dinnerware makes feeding extra easy with smart detailing such as the edge on plate and bowl to help the child hold them during the learning phase where hands are as important as cutlery. From rattles and baby nests to children’s furniture and dinnerware - NO compromise or short-cuts. Cam Cam Copenhagen utilises GOTS certified organic cotton, natural dyes, FSC certified wood and VOC-free paints in their collections. You now can find and purchase Cam Cam Copenhagen at their recently opened pop-up shop-in-shop at Pure Baby, 208 Fulham Road, Chelsea, London! MICKEY MOUSE AT 90:
THE RELATABLE RODENT THAT FOUNDED AN EMPIRE To celebrate his anniversary, Luke RixStanding takes a look at the life and times of Mickey Mouse, one of the world’s first fictional superstars.
O
ne of the great cultural phenomenons of the 20th century, Mickey Mouse broke ground in animation, became synonymous with the cartoon short, and forged a career as a truly international star. As he celebrates his 90th birthday, we find out more about the superstar rodent that charmed children, amused adults, and made Disney a household name.
20 DEC 2018/JAN 2019
From scribble to superstar ‘I only hope’, Walt Disney once said, ‘that we don’t lose sight of one thing. That it all started with a mouse’. Mickey Mouse was Disney’s breakout star but, were it not for a contract dispute and an intervention by Walt Disney’s wife, he might have been neither mouse nor Mickey. Disney’s first company - the ill-fated ‘laugh-ogram’ - had championed the lovable if ponderouslynamed Oswald the Rabbit and, only after losing the rights to the rabbit, did he begin work on a mouse. A few tweaks to the Oswald model - an elongated nose, shorter, rounder ears - and Mortimer Mouse was born. After a frank conversation with wife Lillian, Disney renamed his creation Mickey. Mickey was a labour of love - with a heavy emphasis on labour. Each cartoon required 15,000 drawings on some 30 different backgrounds, and took Disney’s team of animators anywhere from six months to two years. Until 1946, Disney provided Mickey’s squeaky, helium-like voice himself, something in which he took great pride. Their first recorded cartoon was Plane Crazy - an aerial caper featuring loop-the-loops and bloomers used as parachutes - but the first to screen was 1928’s Steamboat Willie. Mickey nonchalantly chugged down a river, whistling while he worked, getting into Tom & Jerry-esque mischief with the bear-like Captain Pete, the ship’s parrot, and a passing cow. An immediate hit, the film catapulted Mickey into the limelight, and more releases quickly followed. Right from his opening scenes, Mickey was a mouse with a spouse. Mickey’s 90th birthday also marks his and Minnie Mouse’s 90th anniversary, and though their marital status has been the source
of some speculation, Disney stated that they were wed ‘in secret’. Early shorts show a crafty Mickey plotting to steal a kiss from his beloved, while fending off her unlikable ex-boyfriend - a strand of relationship realism that was quickly dropped. Mickey was also too pure for politics, but he made an exception for the Germans. In 1931 he fought off an army of suspiciously Germanlooking cats by firing piano keys out of a mounted sub-machine gun. He played a starring role in 1944, when his name was used as a code word by American soldiers arriving on the beaches of Normandy. Mickey Mouse cartoons were actually banned by the Third Reich - a feather in the cap for the all-American Mickey. By this point, the pairing of Disney and Mouse had permanently altered the landscape of American cinema. Steamboat Willie was the first cartoon to synchronise screen and sound, and Mickey’s first spoken lines - “Hot dogs! Hot dogs!” - were some of the first in cartoon history. Mickey earned his creator an Oscar in 1932, and later became the first
fictional character to have a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame (right next to Tommy Lee Jones). Within a few years of his debut, Mickeyawareness rivalled that of Charlie Chaplin. The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry, but on this occasion, they were a roaring success.
The wilderness years Fame, however, can change mice just as much as people, and Mickey’s success was so massive that his eccentricities became liabilities. In order to maintain his appeal, Mickey’s negative qualities were stripped away, leaving a mouse so straight-laced and saintly, he bordered on bland. Mickey’s personality rested on the idea that he was “a little fellow trying to do the best he could”. So, what to do with him when he became a star? In 1949, Disney himself admitted the problem: “Mickey grew into such a legend that we couldn’t gag around with him”. 1934 had brought the debut of Mickey’s anything-but-bland frenemy Donald Duck, whose hare-brained schemes and boisterous temper tantrums picked up where Mickey left off. Between 1941 and 1965, Donald starred in 109 Disney shorts; Mickey in just 14. Mickey’s filmography dropped off a cliff (1983’s A Mickey Christmas Carol would be his first film in 30 years), but he still had an entertainment empire to run. He was there to meet and greet visitors at Disneyland’s grand opening in 1955, won the hearts of a new generation with his on-and-off children’s TV show the Mickey Mouse Club, and built up a 40% share in Disney consumer product sales. Unsure what to do with him on the silver screen, Disney made Mickey master of ceremonies, family patriarch, and mainstay of merchandising.
The second coming By the mid-nineties, Mickey had become a bit of a problem. He was still Disney’s prize asset - far too big to be discarded - but it would be a brave executive who tried to modernise or tinker with him. Long gone was the lovably roguish scamp that charmed his way to stardom - Nineties Mickey was a theme-park mascot, a nostalgia piece for parents, and a face on a business card. When Andy Mooney arrived as Disney’s head of consumer products in 2003, he couldn’t believe how little the company was using the face of their franchise. “Mickey is our swoosh”, he remarked, referring to the omnipresent tick that Nike use. There followed perhaps the grandest marketing campaign in Disney’s history - its goal to make Mickey cool again. Mickey cartoons appeared in 3D, the video game series Kingdom Hearts gave Mickey a rare ensemble role, and a giant graffiti mural of the mouse appeared on the corner of Sunset Boulevard. Some Mickey purists were horrified, but Disney’s bank accounts purred. T-shirts made up the thrust of the campaign, and Mickey appeared splashed across the chests of
Jennifer Aniston, Avril Lavigne, Lenny Kravitz, and Sarah Jessica Parker on Sex And The City. Move over Che Guevara, here comes Mickey Mouse. The result was a Mickey for a new age. Though still the smiling face that meets visitors at the gates of Disneyland, the release of video game Epic Mickey in 2009 brought a darker, moodier Mickey, who could be cantankerous and calculating. The game initially received average reviews, but has since gained a sequel and a cult following.
More than a mouse Mickey may have begun life just as a mouse (or indeed, a rabbit), but for some, he symbolised the American dream. He rose from the ashes of the Great Depression (“he has helped us laugh away our troubles, forget our creditors and keep our chins up”, wrote the Boston Globe), and Walt Disney had endured years of rejections and bankruptcy before striking mouse-shaped gold. “If you can dream it, you can do it” he said famously, and Mickey was the embodiment of this optimism. But representing America could be a doubleedged sword. As Mickey moved from films to retail outlets, he became known as the cutesy face of capitalism, and shows like South Park presented him as a bullying executive, jaded by decades of obsessive marketing strategies and boardroom tensions. Mickey began life as an alter-ego for his creator, but grew to become, in the words of novelist John Updike, “the most persistent and most pervasive figure of American popular culture in this century”. Lovable rascal; angelic everyman; corporate symbol; American icon - Mickey has been through countless iterations. Whatever happens, his legacy is assured. The Disney princesses, the theme parks, The Lion King and Frozen - it all started with a mouse. DEC 2018/JAN 2019 21

Encouraging Active Kids
year-old girl. “The kids in the video wore me out,” says the sporty mum, who has a daughter aged 15 and two boys, aged eight and 11. “As a mum, I know how important being a role model is to keeping my family active and healthy. Right from the get-go with my children they’ve seen me going for a run, being part of athletics, doing circuits, and it’s almost like osmosis. It’s easier with a sporty parent, children will usually follow suit.” A survey by Public Health England and Disney found 57% of children said they were more likely to be active if their parents were - although the main motivation for kids was having friends join in (53%). “Sporty parents will encourage their children to be active,” says Denise. “The real challenge is children who don’t have active parents - how do you get those guys involved as well?”
Start by making activities easy
A
Olympic gold medallist and TV presenter Denise Lewis urges parents to encourage 10-minute bursts to help their children get the exercise bug words: Lisa Salmon
fter helping present the BBC coverage of the World Athletics Championships, former heptathlete Denise Lewis has turned her attention to something even more important - getting the nation’s children active. The Olympic gold medallist has joined forces with Change4Life, Sport England and Disney to encourage kids to try 10 Minute Shake Up, a series of 10-minute games and activities to help them work towards the 60 minutes of physical activity it’s recommended children do every day. Just 23% of boys and 20% of girls meet this recommended activity target, and one in five children starts primary school overweight or obese, rising to more than a third by the time they leave. Mum-of-three Denise, who won heptathlon gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, says: “Being active isn’t just for Olympians, it’s something that everyone - no matter their age, ability or interests - can and should take part in. “It’s alarming so few boys and girls are hitting their physical activity target, so we want to kickstart children into being more active. The focus is running, jumping, throwing, catching and coordination - the basics, hence why I got involved, as obviously those are things I know very well.”
Kids are more likely to be active if their parents are The 10 Minute Shake Ups offer fun activities inspired by an array of Disney characters. “The activities are very simple and the whole family can get moving together,” explains Denise, 44. Denise tries the Shake Ups herself in a short video in which she’s coached mercilessly by a seven28 DEC 2018/JAN 2019
Denise suggests the key is to make activity easy at first, hence the bite-size, 10-minute chunks parents can join in with; playing simple balloon games, for example. “Just 10 minutes sounds do-able to anybody. You can fit it into your day and, if you’re enjoying it, perhaps you’ll build it up and before you know it the kids have hit the target of an hour a day. “You realise that just getting the heart rate increased is doing everyone’s bodies the world of good.”
Being active is such a confidence boost - for all ages Activity also helps psychologically. The survey found being active made the majority of those aged five to 11 feel happier (79%), more confident (72%), and more sociable (74%). And while Denise admits it would be “fantastic” if the 10 Minute Shake-Ups put children on the path to becoming top athletes, that’s not really what the programme’s about. “If we get an Olympian out of this, I would love it,” she says, “but this is about the bigger picture of having exercise and activity as part of your lifestyle.” And 17 years after winning Olympic gold, activity is still very much part of Denise’s life. She runs, cycles and does circuits and weight training. “I exercise now for that space in my mind - and also so I can maintain my jeans size,” she admits. “I don’t feel the pressure like I used to. It’s about that time away from being a busy mum.” Denise is optimistic about British sport’s future and thinks there’s a plethora of talent coming through, particularly in women’s sport. “There are a lot of positive role models for young women, inspiring other women to want to get involved. That’s a great antidote to the negative images I see, like the selfies girls my daughter’s age take - it’s all they seem to think about. “Let’s get them thinking about being active instead.”

Nursery Interior Design Tips WORDS: Grace Tindall, founder of Scandibørn
Keep your base neutral The first rule of Scandi styling, keep it simple. Use white or light wood and a colour palette of muted pastels or monochromes as the base. Using these neutral tones means you can add more colourful or graphic accessories in the form of cushions, wall stickers, storage, rugs, mobiles and artwork – items that can easily be changed when the child grows up. Using simple fabrics for a nursery means you can customise the look as often you like.
Think about how you want it to feel This gives you a great starting point for designing your nursery – do you want it to feel bright, fun, magical, calm or cosy. You can then start to choose your colours, textures and décor items that fit with that theme.
Storage should be plentiful but pretty Toys, bedding, baby equipment, books and numerous knick knacks which come part and parcel of every nursery need a home which isn’t on the floor. We love woven or fabric baskets like those from Olliella, Liewood and Fabelab available at Scandibørn. The Play and Go Lego bags are also perfect for tidying away those small toys in a flash.
A good chair You’ll spend a lot of time in it so make sure it’s comfortable. We opted for an Ikea Rocking chair and then accessorised it with a sheepskin throw and an OYOY lion cushion.
Strategically placed lighting A dimmer switch and a couple of lamps around the room mean you can always control the level of lighting according to the need and during the bedtime routine. If baby wakes during the night, little night lights which are not too bright can easily help you find your way round – we love the little cloud lights perfect for a bedside table and the Giraffe and Elephant from Officina.
Furniture to last Consider furniture which won’t date and grows with your child. Invest in a furniture set that will last for years, look for features like conversions from cot beds to junior beds; Junior beds that become a full adult singles and changing tables that can be converted into a regular chest of drawers.
Add personal touches to make your nursery unique We love‘The Birth Poster’ who make illustrations to scale of your baby at birth, Lala Loves Décor for a personalised name sign or Ingrid Petrie for a family penguin print.
Make shelving a feature A set of shelves in the nursery is not only practical but can easily be transformed into a focal point with a few carefully chosen items. Add photos, books and a few wooden décor items (we’ve curated our favourites from pinch toys, OYOY and Bloomingville). Rose in April, String Shelves or leather strap shelves, are all timeless in design.
Fit for purpose flooring I’d always recommend a hardwood or laminate floor in a nursery, inevitable spillages are much easier and less stressful to handle, especially in the middle of the night! However a rug is a must, it makes it feel more cosy and can also provide a place to play, our World and Adventure rugs fit the bill for most nurseries, if you want something plain then we love the neutral tones of our new Naco diamond rugs.
Work with the space you have Sounds simple but it’s so tempting to get carried away with filling the nursery with ‘stuff ’. If you have a small nursery use light colours and try to limit the amount floor space taken up. Add three tiered shelving (like those from Rose in April), wall hooks which you can hang an outfit from or a storage bag. www.scandiborn.co.uk 32 DEC 2018/JAN 2019

‘Why do babygrows have all these poppers?’ M
y lovely hubby would ask me this all the time when we had our first baby boy. This got me thinking about the many times I was struggling to match poppers in the dark whilst trying to dress our newborn. I now have two very wriggly little boys who won’t keep still for a second, it’s like wrestling a lion getting them dressed after bath time. So with two busy little guys to deal with I need ZIPPYUP’s more than ever to make nappy and outfit changes quicker and easier. Just over a year ago I got to work on making ZIPPYUP a brand for all those parents like us, slightly tired, run ragged and doing the best we can...we’ll take any help that is offered...if it makes our life easier. Before I promoted myself to the position of Mummy, I learnt my trade working for a company that designed and made many of the clothes you’re probably wearing right now. So I have taken those many years of experience and knowledge and put them to good use by designing and making a babygrow that works well for both the wearer and the dresser. ZIPPYUP babygrows aren’t just well designed,
36 DEC 2018/JAN 2019
they’re amazing value and made from good quality soft fabric, that’s because I personally source and work with the factories that are making ZIPPYUP designs to get the best possible prices and materials. The classic ZIPPYUP original babygrow is made from 100% super soft cotton fabric. The zips are concealed so they do not have contact with your baby’s skin and the tab at the neck ensures the zip puller doesn’t catch on any little chins. The long sleeves have turn back cuffs so you don’t need separate (often lost or odd) mittens and they are long enough for your baby to have lots of hand room. Colour combinations include unisex colours such as aqua with pale grey and traditional white with pale grey. For baby girls we have designed a pink and white stripe. New colour combinations of the classic one-piece ZIPPYUP babygrow are in the pipeline as well as new designs, I’ve taken inspiration from baseball style tees by pairing up interesting colours which look extra cute as babygrows, I look forward to sharing these with you very soon. www.zippyup.com

Nikki also works as a Childminder and Designer for a bespoke furniture business. The Tablex range of tables seamlessly combines great functionality as a multi purpose play table, with a revolutionary storage option, and has been designed with a huge amount of experience applied. In recent years, through both work and home life, Nikki became increasingly aware of a significant lack of children’s play tables which can be easily
stored away, in a market that is a necessity for any family. She recognises the key role that play tables have in children’s developmental activities and in allowing imaginations to flourish, but also the frustrations of many parents and carers at having to share their homes with cumbersome, unattractive play tables indefinitely, instead of simply when they are in use. In November 2018 the Tablex was introduced to the market, and has since received outstanding praise from customers for its ingenious design.
“What an amazing product. My children love building and creating at our table and I love that I can slide it under the sofa when it isn’t in use. Highly Recommend”
Katie - Maidenhead Tablex tables can be disassembled easily and without the need for tools, in seconds. Standing 245mm high when assembled, the tables reduce down to a height of less than 40mm when collapsed. This minimal dimension allows countless storage options, meaning tables can be tucked under beds, sofas or in cupboards to name but a few, when not in use. Table top sizes are specifically designed to fit 4 or 6 construction block base plates within its edge profile, and are also perfectly suited for art, craft, games, jigsaws and much more besides. Crafted in beautiful plywood, tables are currently available in two size options, with an introductory price of Tablex Gracie £95 and Tablex Ethan £75. • Gracie; 800mm(l) x 545mm(w) x 245mm (h - assembled) or 40mm(h - disassembled) • Ethan; 545mm(l) x 545mm(w) x 245mm (h - assembled) or 40mm(h - disassembled) A limited number are still available in time for Christmas 2018, purchase yours via the website www.littlespellcreations.co.uk, Facebook page @littlespellcreations or by email sales@littlespellcreations.co.uk 46 DEC 2018/JAN 2019

HELP THEM REACH
TOP OF THE CLASS
Help children succeed at school by using simple techniques to boost learning, say the experts. WORDS: Lisa Salmon
I
f you want your child to get to the top of the class, it’s not nearly as simple as just encouraging them to work hard. Parents can play a huge role in helping their kids to fulfil their academic potential, and advanced learning expert Professor Deborah Eyre and education journalist Wendy Berliner, authors of the new book Great Minds and How to Grow Them, believe they know just what parents need to do.
Remember, IQ isn’t fixed. Eyre and Berliner explain the latest neurological and psychological research shows most children are capable of reaching the high levels of performance previously associated only with the gifted and talented. They stress that IQ and potential isn’t fixed - evidence shows it can be grown, and the key is
52 DEC 2018/JAN 2019
developing the right learning attributes and attitudes Berliner says: “The vast majority of children could do really well at school, but unless parents play their part and help them learn the habits of high performance, they’re far less likely to get there.”
Parents can give kids a flying start. The pair have studied how top students learn, and how this learning can be replicated by virtually all children. “The home is at the heart of this learning revolution,” Berliner stresses. “Parents are a child’s first and longest serving teachers - give your children a flying start at school with proven ways to boost learning.
“Parents can play a huge role in helping their kids to fulfil their academic potential”
Don’t say: You’ve been practising long enough now, do something else. Do say: You’re really good at that now, what’s the next step up?
Encourage curiosity Curiosity is at the heart of all learning and the link with high performance is compelling, so encourage questions and model it yourself. Your job is to answer your children’s questions initially and then later encourage them to find out the answers themselves. Don’t say: Stop asking so many questions. Do say: I wonder why ...?
Encourage critical or logical thinking The characteristic most associated with academic success is the ability to deduct, hypothesise, reason and seek evidence - Sherlock Holmes is your model for this. Don’t say: Why are you interested in that? Who cares? Do say: Why do you think that happened? How could you work it out?
“And keep things enjoyable - evidence shows children who do well at school have warm relationships with their parents.”
Getting kids to the top of the class. Here are Berliner and Eyre’s tips to help your child to fulfil their academic potential.
Encourage resilience Children who do well at school aren’t put off by failing- they keep trying until they get better. Your job when a child says they’re rubbish or can’t do something is to make them believe in themselves and keep going. Don’t say: Let me do it for you. Do say: I know it’s hard now, but you can do this if you keep trying.
“Evidence shows children who do well at school have warm relationships with their parents”
Encourage planning and monitoring Knowing how they’re doing - that they’re on track with their homework, for example - and knowing they need to put more effort into improving certain things, is very important to high performers. Don’t say: Just start somewhere and muddle along. Do say: How are you going to tackle this? Do you know you’re on track? How can you tell you’re doing it right?
Encourage open-mindedness Being open to new ideas is the hallmark of an advanced learner. Start with being open-minded yourself, and model what it’s like to be receptive to ideas that differ from your own. Don’t say: What a stupid idea. Do say: Isn’t that interesting? I never thought of that, but that’s such a good approach.
Encourage practice It’s the only way to get better. Make sure it’s regular, deliberate and planned practice, working towards achievable incremental goals, and your child practices what he/she can’t do until they can do it well. DEC 2018/JAN 2019 53

BEAUTY TIPS
f you want to know about make-up, skincare and products that’ll make you look and feel fantastic, ask a beauty vlogger. Bubz - aka Lindy Tsang - launched her vlog Bubzbeauty almost a decade ago, when she couldn’t find a ‘real’ job. She now makes a very successful living out of it - as her three million YouTube subscribers will tell you, not to mention her 814K Instagram and 262K Twitter followers. The Northern Irish mum-of-one (with another on the way) is a big fan of Japanese products (because of their “quality control”) and Korean beauty trends, but mostly likes to keep things simple. “Simple looks don’t go out of style,” says Bubz, 30. “Make-up that’s too heavy can age you, so you want to look fresh-faced.” Here are her top tips, insider secrets and make-up bag must-haves...
NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE IMPORTANCE OF CLEANSING
A lot of people don’t realise how important cleansing is. Spend a few minutes massaging your face with cleansing oil, before rinsing off. Make sure it bubbles up and when you rinse, splash 12-15 times to really get rid of that residue. Origins Clean Energy Gentle Cleansing Oil, £24.50 (www.origins.co.uk)
LIPSTICK, CONCEALER AND A BROW PENCIL ARE YOUR MOST IMPORTANT PRODUCTS If your brows are done and skin looks nice, your make-up is 80% finished. And once you’ve got some lip colour on, it doesn’t matter how dark

MAKE YOUR OWN FACE MASK I love sheet masks but I also like making my own. Nothing compares to mixing yogurt and oatmeal together. It can solve any skin problem - acne, dryness, oiliness, dull skin, everything. Just use natural yoghurt and oats.

ALWAYS USE HIGHLIGHTER
IF YOU’RE SPLASHING OUT, YOU CAN’T GO WRONG WITH NARS, KIEHL’S AND YSL
I’m pregnant right now and people keep telling me I’ve ‘got the glow’, but it’s actually a highlighter by Make Up For Ever. I use it under my eyes and on my cheeks. Make Up For Ever Pro Light Fusion Highlighter, currently reduced to £24.75 from £27.50 (www.debenhams.com)
USE ICE TO DE-PUFF If you wake up puffy, dunk your face into iced water for 20 seconds and it makes all the difference. It reduces puffiness, tightens pores and wakes you up. You can just use an ice cube or cold water if you prefer.
FOR BUDGET BEAUTY, OPT FOR MAYBELLINE, L’OREAL AND SOAP & GLORY Maybelline makes fantastic concealer - their technology has really stepped up a notch. L’Oreal and Revlon make great foundations and I really love Soap & Glory products, especially their mattifying powders. Nars concealers and foundations have great coverage, YSL Touche Eclat gives you a spa-like finish and I’m a huge fan of Kiehl’s Daily Reviving Concentrate. I tend to just use it at night. Rehabilitation after surgery Rehabilitative physiotherapy is best started as soon as possible after surgery. Go find your BUZZ R
unners beware! Emerging research has suggested that high-impact exercise is closely linked with incidence of urinary leakage (Almousa et al, 2015). Highimpact exercise is increasing in popularity amongst women in the United Kingdom (Sport England, 2015) – which is fantastic for your general fitness and well being, however a study of 230 athletes aged 19-40 found that 58% had Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) (Da Roza et al, 2011). Runners carried the highest prevalence of SUI. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) recognizes the significance of pelvic floor strength in urinary incontinence. NICE cite pelvic floor muscle training as the ‘first-line treatment’ for women with SUI (NICE, 2015). Empirical evidence has linked the strength of the pelvic floor to urinary incontinence symptoms (Dumoulin et al, 2014). The physiology of high impact stress incontinence is complex, and it while the future may hold more targeted treatments, the majority of women experience symptom relief through pelvic floor strengthening. It is therefore justifiable to assume that the cause of SUI in high-impact athletes is at least in part their pelvic floor.
Pregnancy Are you struggling with a leaky pelvic floor during pregnancy or following childbirth? Well, you’re not alone! It’s not only pregnant women and mums who suffer with this embarrassing ailment – incontinence affects one in three women at some point in their lives and half of all athletes. In fact, Up to 14 million British women leak when they cough or laugh vigorously, or move energetically. Stress incontinence is very common in new mums because of the hormone and postural changes that pregnancy brings. The best way to prevent and treat a weak pelvic floor is with daily targeted pelvic floor exercise, and there’s a whole host of products that can assist you. The important point is correct technique and then persistence. It will take a few weeks, sometimes months to achieve a leak free pelvic floor!

It can be used all day or only for the activities that cause leaks. LOUISE REDKNAPP’S BEAUTY ESSENTIALS The singer reveals her skincare, hair and make-up must-haves. WORDS: Katie Wright
A
s a busy mum constantly juggling home life with work projects, Louise Redknapp doesn’t have much time for pampering. “I don’t often have a lot of different beauty treatments,” says the singer and former Eternal star, who split from her ex-footballer husband Jamie last year. “I’m not someone who goes and has different facials, but my mum is a facial reflexologist and I swear by that.” The practice involves massaging pressure points on the face that are said to correlate with different parts of the body and is intended to improve facial muscle tone and firmness. “It’s really good for anti-ageing,” Redknapp, 43, says. “She uses the crystals. It’s great for skin rejuvenation and lifting. “So that’s really the one thing that I love to do to pamper myself, and it’s kind of holistic and you get to zone out, especially when your mum does it, so it’s a bit of a bonus.” And it seems to be working, because the mumof-two looks fabulous. Facial sessions with mum aside, Redknapp likes to keep it simple with her home beauty routine and is a big fan of natural oils and hard-working skincare so that she doesn’t have to wear a lot of make-up. Here, she shares her five favourite beauty products and why she loves them so much...
Dr. Frances Prenna Jones Formula, £38 “I use it day and night. I love it. It’s something 64 DEC 2018/JAN 2019
I’ve used for ten years now and I swear by it,” says Redknapp of the serum, which is packed with antioxidants and should be used after cleansing and before moisturising.
Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer, £30 “I hate a heavy make-up look,” she confesses, preferring to use the Nars cult favourite for her base. “It’s a really natural tinted moisturizer, really glossy. I can just apply it easily.”
L’Occitane Almond Supple Skin Oil, £36 “I love almond oil or any sort of oil just to put on my eyebrows and eyelashes - really just to try and keep them as healthy and strong as possible. “Again, I’m not really into the fake eyelashes and drawing in my brows so I try and use oils.”
Neal’s Yard Rejuvenating Frankincense Facial Oil, £32 “I love frankincense oil for my skin, face, and body,” the singer says. “It’s really lovely on your face. I tend to use that if my skin is really dry.”
Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, £41, Space NK Redknapp keeps it simple with her hair too, finishing it off with a GHD straightener, “just to smooth out the end of my hair for hair product. I love Oribe texturizing spray on my hair, that’s a great product.” Louise Redknapp has partnered with Specsavers to launch Frame Styler. For more information visit specsavers.co.uk.

tips for better sleep during pregnancy Empty your headspace before you go to bed. We all have busy lives. There’s always something else waiting to get done or a gazillion little things you need to organise in your head on a day to day basis in order to get the logistics of modern life to actually work. Some neuroscientists claim that an average human has about 50 000 to 70 000 thoughts in their head per day. No wonder it can feel a little busy up theresometimes ha-ha.Have you ever gone to bed after a long day, but as soon as your head hits the pillow you suddenly feel wide-awake? Like, no matter how hard you try your brain simply won’t shut off ? That is actually your brain trying to tell you that you need to de-clutter upstairs! To set yourself up for good sleep you need to allow your brain and body to winddownafter a busy day. Turn off your phone, computer screen or TV for the last hour to half hour before you go to bed. Read a book or listen to some relaxing music, and take 5 minutes to write down everything (no matter how little!) you think you need to remember for the next day on a piece of paper. That way you empty your headspace and make space for some nice, restfulsleep.
Beware of sleep debt You need way more sleep than usual when you’re pregnant. Why? Because you are actually growing a tiny little human in there and that takes a lot of energy from your body. Sleep debt is the difference between the amounts of sleep you should be getting and the amount you actually get. The good news is that, like with all debt, with some persistent work you can catch up and repay it– though it won’t happen in one extended sleep marathon. Taking a small daytime nap every day plus tacking on an extra hour or two of sleep during the night is what is going to help you stay in good sleep balance.
Keep it cool After you conceive, your body temperature will go up by an average of nearly one degree due to an increase in your body metabolism. Now, that may 70 DEC 2018/JAN 2019
not sound like a lot but believe me it is noticeable. Your body naturally recognises that it has to take care of two, and thus increases it’s normal activities leading to an increase in body temperature. Keep your bedroom extra cool and use linens that allow for proper circulation of air. Also, avoid exercise, warm baths/showers and caffeinated drinks the last 2-3 hours before you go to bed.
Feel free
“You need way more sleep than usual when you’re pregnant”
There’s nothing more irritating than the feeling of restrictive clothing when you’re trying to relax, right? Add a growing belly into that equation and it can feel near impossible to ignore that irritating bra or that uncomfortably curious brief when you’re trying to sleep. My best recommendation is that you sleep naked. No clothes to irritate you or restrict circulation in your body, and as a bonus it is also healthier for the “downstairs” department. If you are not comfortable with sleeping naked, at least make sure to wear something in stretchy, natural and breathable material. As you approach the end of your last trimester, turning over in bed can get quite challenging and your mattress may feel like it has Velcro on it. If you don’t have a partner who’s happy to wake up and give you a much-needed push as you roll over, try sleeping on a silk satin sheet with silk bottom or brief.
The magic is in the proper support Sleeping when you’re pregnant is different. Your body is in constant change and as your belly grows you will feel the need for body support during sleep. Using the bbhugme pregnancy pillow from early on in your pregnancy will not only help you sleep and rest better, but it can also help in the prevention of common low back- and pelvic pain (SPD) associated with pregnancy. Thousands of women have already tried the bbhugme pregnancy pillow and they love it! If there is ever a time in your life you should invest in sleep, it’s during your pregnancy. Remember, you are sleeping for two now. Dr. Hilde, Founder of bbhugme www.bbhugme.no

Winter is coming…
And with it the inevitable holiday collection of winter ills from falls and fevers to cuts and burns. So when you or your child is ill or injured, what are the options? • It can take days to see an NHS GP and even private GPs lack most of the equipment needed to investigate and treat many problems. • Online GPs can’t examine or investigate you at all. • Referrals to specialists can take days or weeks to organize and you need to see a GP first! • Which just leaves the inevitable visit to A&E, but
waiting times are soaring and you’re very unlikely to see a consultant unless your condition is critical. Bluezone Health have created the solution. They’re a group of senior Emergency Medicine doctors who believe there’s a better way to provide A&E and immediate care for many common health issues: • Injuries, cuts, burns and broken bones. • Infections, rashes, migraines and fevers. • Chest pain, palpitations, gut, liver and kidney problems. • Advice on test results or referrals to other specialists. And it couldn’t be easier. To speak to a doctor, simply complete a short form online and an A&E consultant will call you back shortly. If they need to see you, they’ll arrange a face-to-face appointment at a private hospital where they can run tests and treat you at your convenience. This is a private service so there are charges but it’s a small price to pay to avoid hours in A&E on a dark Friday evening. www.bluezonehealth.co.uk/ym

Having another baby is there ever a right time? What impact can a second child have on the existing family unit and relationship? What about physically or even emotionally? Is there ever a right or wrong time to have another baby? We pose some questions for you to think about if you’re contemplating another baby.
Are you both ready for a another new baby? After having your first child you may have got to the point where you are now settled in a routine, with even getting more sleep! You and your partner have probably found that you have got more time for each other again. Now is probably a good time to sit down together and talk things through. Decide if this is what you both want, when you want it, make the plans together. Research tell us that the happiest couples are those that make the decision together to become parents. It is also important to realise that the demands of a second or subsequent newborn will be the same as your first and may even be more challenging when you also have an older child/children to look after. You will also have to negotiate the tiredness and renegotiation of the household chores all over again!
What about finances and work?
Having and bringing up children is expensive, so extra money is always needed however large your assets are. So it is important to talk to each other about your finances. What about your work situation? Childcare is more expensive for more than one child. Can you 76 DEC 2018/JAN 2019
afford to both work if you have more children? Or will one partner’s working hours increase? Would this cause a strain on your relationship? Where will the new child sleep in the short and long term? Can you afford to upsize if you need to? These are all crucial questions that need answering before a final decision or plan is made.
Are you ready emotionally and physically?
Only you really know this, but researchers tell us the ideal gap is between 18 months and 23 months. This timing allows your body to recover and replenish all those important nutrients needed to grow and nurture a healthy baby. Don’t forget your existing child/children It is also important to remember their feelings; how will they feel with a new baby joining their family? They may be feeling bewildered and anxious which in turn may cause some challenging behaviour or jealousy even before the baby is born. If you are thinking about having another baby, the good news is that both you and your partner survived and together made it through all the highs and lows of a newborn once. This time you’ll have more of an idea of what to expect.

Toothpaste tips • Start brushing your baby’s teeth with fluoride toothpaste as soon as the first milk tooth breaks through. This helps to prevent and control tooth decay. • There’s no need to buy “children’s toothpaste”. Some of them don’t have enough fluoride. • Children under 6 who don’t have tooth decay can use a lowerstrength toothpaste, but must contain at least 1,000ppm fluoride. • Make sure children don’t eat or lick toothpaste from the tube. • Below the age of 3, children should use just a smear of toothpaste. • Children aged 3-6 should use a pea-sized blob of toothpaste.
Wisdo m for healthy children’s teeth From brushing their first tooth to their first trip to the dentist, here’s how to take care of your children’s teeth. A regular teeth-cleaning routine is essential for good dental health. Follow these tips and you can help keep your kids’ teeth remain decay-free.
Toothbrushing tips • Brush your child’s teeth for about 2 minutes twice a day: once just before bedtime and at least one another time during the day. • Encourage them to spit out excess toothpaste, but not to rinse with lots of water. Rinsing with water after will wash away the fluoride and make it less effective. • Supervise tooth brushing until your child is 7 or 8, either by brushing their teeth yourself or, if they brush their own, by watching how they do it. From the age of 7 or 8, they should be able to brush their own teeth, but it’s still a good idea to watch them now and again to make sure they brush properly and for about 2 minutes. • Guide your child’s hand so they can feel the correct movement.
78 DEC 2018/JAN 2019
Taking your child to the dentist • Take your child to the dentist when their first milk teeth appear, so they become familiar and get to know the dentist. The dentist can help prevent decay and identify any oral health problems at an early stage. Just opening up the child’s mouth for the dentist to take a look at is useful practice for the future. • When you visit the dentist, be positive about it and make the trip fun. This will stop your child worrying about future visits. • Take your child for regular dental check-ups.

Reasons To Try
Attachment Parenting You don’t have to babywear and breastfeed to practise attachment parenting - responding to infants sensitively is a big part of it too. words: Lisa Salmon
become naturally independent, self-motivated and are more likely to cooperate and communicate in positive ways. “The child’s earliest attachments help build the foundations for trusting, healthy adult relationships,” says Michelle. Closeness can help development Research shows being touched and loved is essential to a baby’s healthy brain development. A 2014 American study found infants learn language more rapidly when caregivers are very responsive, and further research has concluded that young children develop better problem-solving abilities, attention skills and school-readiness when their parents are sensitive and responsive. “Through nurturing touch and sensitivity to verbal and non-verbal cues, parents can support the development of their baby’s prefrontal cortex - the area of the brain responsible for empathy,” says Michelle. “This neurobiology influences future mental health.”
A
ll parents are attached to their children, so isn’t attachment parenting just what everyone does already? To some extent, yes. But attachment parenting (AP) experts believe many parents don’t give natural, bond-led child-rearing enough attention, so they’re urging mums and dads to think about trying the parenting method.
What is attachment parenting? The idea behind AP is that, as a child’s first few years of life are so important to their development, the best way to meet their needs is to form a secure attachment with them. Some of the basics of AP are natural childbirth, responding immediately to crying, breastfeeding when the child desires it, holding and carrying the baby or wearing it in a sling, and co-sleeping. However, if parents can’t do all, or even one of these things, they can still practise attachment parenting stresses Michelle McHale, founder of Attachment Parenting UK. She suggests that, simply responding to young children sensitively and consistently, using positive discipline, and following their instincts, all counts. The mother of two says she first discovered AP when her eldest daughter, Izzy, was ultra-attached as a baby. Michelle dealt with her daughter’s behaviour by raising her in a “very natural” bond-focused way, and discovered years later that Izzy had two rare heart defects, which may have explained her strong need for constant touch and closeness.
Here, Michelle outlines three reasons to try AP: It can boost a child’s ability to communicate When parents are sensitive and consistent - key aspects of AP - their children are primed to 80 DEC 2018/JAN 2019
Positive discipline can improve behaviour With specific praise and rewards, children can be more adventurous in their learning and develop sound judgement rather than unquestioning obedience, explains Michelle. Positive discipline also recognises that when children feel good, they behave well; punishment is often considered counter-effective. AP is based on the principle that parents treat children the way they would want to be treated, with the ultimate aim of children developing a conscience guided by their own internal discipline and compassion. Michelle says: “Children who aren’t physically punished are far less predisposed to addiction, anti-social behaviour or abusiveness in later life.”
