Inspirational bedrooms “The challenge is to get comfortable, great looking beds”

W

e are passionate about design; to produce great beds and to create inspirational bedrooms for children to grow up in. Despite being a small team of creatives, our product design output is huge and we’re always busy sketching out a new idea for a bed or mocking up a new furniture piece. We design all of our own products from scratch and spend lots of time working out the best way to make it and from what. And we brainstorm right through to how it will look in a bedroom as we have our own photographic studios and are constantly looking at trends and refreshing the look. Here we are joined by another creative talent – Fi – an expert trend observer and super stylist who crafts her magic and creates amazing bedrooms to inspire. (Contact Fi@number21.style as she offers advice and interior design solutions to a lot of our customers). The challenge is to get comfortable, great looking beds that also “do a lot”. Even a traditional single bed can be transformed with a large storage trundle underneath (and which can double up as a sleepover bed). If you raise the bed frame a little (so-called Mid-Sleeper) you create lots of useful space. We add chest of drawers, bookcases and desks - all mounted on lockable castors so the configuration can be changed again and again. Your children may see the space as the perfect play den! For slightly older children raise the bed more for 6 OCT/NOV 2018

the Loft Bed concept. We make sure the elevated bed platform more than delivers on durability and security. We deliberately chose to stay with solid hardwood frames and proper mortice & tenon jointing in our product, as well as a solid hardwood lath base to support the mattress. Underneath a whole plethora of “smart” furniture – from desks, storage bookcases, futon chairbeds and luxurious sofabeds (and no foam blocks in our product!). It won’t be long before your child is “receiving guests at home”. The team at Little Folks Furniture have been doing this for more than 25 years – so we’ve got quite a lot of experience under our belt. We’ve a reputation for our expertise especially around safety standards (we even have our own “test house” where we can “bish bash bosh” our furniture again and again to make sure it works). But it is also because we understand and “do” manufacturing that elevates our designs; it’s not just about the look of the product but everything about how it performs, how safe it is and that it lasts. We believe we have taken the stress out of choosing safe beds for children, combining our years of expertise for guaranteed performance and quality to create inspirational bedrooms. www.littlefolksfurniture.co.uk

‘Why do babygrows have all these poppers?’ M y lovely hubby would ask me this all the time when we had our first baby boy. This got me thinking about the many times I was struggling to match poppers in the dark whilst trying to dress our newborn. I now have two very wriggly little boys who won’t keep still for a second, it’s like wrestling a lion getting them dressed after bath time. So with two busy little guys to deal with I need ZIPPYUP’s more than ever to make nappy and outfit changes quicker and easier. Just over a year ago I got to work on making ZIPPYUP a brand for all those parents like us, slightly tired, run ragged and doing the best we can...we’ll take any help that is offered...if it makes our life easier. Before I promoted myself to the position of Mummy, I learnt my trade working for a company that designed and made many of the clothes you’re probably wearing right now. So I have taken those many years of experience and knowledge and put them to good use by designing and making a babygrow that works well for both the wearer and the dresser. ZIPPYUP babygrows aren’t just well designed, they’re amazing value and made from good quality soft fabric, that’s because I personally source and

18 OCT/NOV 2018

work with the factories that are making ZIPPYUP designs to get the best possible prices and materials. The classic ZIPPYUP original babygrow is made from 100% super soft cotton fabric. The zips are concealed so they do not have contact with your baby’s skin and the tab at the neck ensures the zip puller doesn’t catch on any little chins. The long sleeves have turn back cuffs so you don’t need separate (often lost or odd) mittens and they are long enough for your baby to have lots of hand room. Colour combinations include unisex colours such as aqua with pale grey and traditional white with pale grey. For baby girls we have designed a pink and white stripe. New colour combinations of the classic one-piece ZIPPYUP babygrow are in the pipeline as well as new designs, I’ve taken inspiration from baseball style tees by pairing up interesting colours which look extra cute as babygrows, I look forward to sharing these with you very soon. www.zippyup.com

Continuity of care, something we hear a lot about

but what does it actually mean? In this model the midwife is the lead professional in the planning, organisation, and delivery of care throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Research consistently shows a continuity model to be the gold standard of maternity care and it is proven to result in healthier mothers and babies, lower interventions in labour and a higher level of satisfaction for both women and midwives.

24 OCT/NOV 2018

I

n reality, due to the restraints of local service provision, many women cannot access this model of care and may find themselves meeting a new midwife at every appointment. At Private Midwives continuity of care is at the very heart of their philosophy. Their clients enjoy the many benefits of having one midwife caring for them throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period, usually in the comfort of their own home. • Time to build a meaningful relationship with an experienced midwife leads to a trusting partnership with clients and their families at the very centre of their care. • Unhurried, thorough and frequent appointments with the same midwife at a time that suits their clients and their families. • Full discussions covering all aspects of care allows for truly informed choice. • Developing a plan for birth together decreases unnecessary interventions. • A known midwife attending in labour reduces anxiety and promotes oxytocin (the

labour hormone). • Consistent advice on parentcraft from the same midwife at every postnatal visit reduces anxiety. • A trained and committed breastfeeding expert leads to high breastfeeding success rates. Their commitment to continuity of care has resulted in them winning Lux Life Magazine’s Best Midwifery Service in the UK award in 2018, along with several Midwife of the Year and Healthcare Provider of the Year awards over the last few years. Continuity provides their clients with the safest, evidence-based and highest standard of midwifery care leading to feelings of control, improved outcomes for women and babies, respectful and committed care and high rates of normal birth and breastfeeding success. At Private Midwives they value their clients experience and are proud to provide them with the care that every woman deserves during this very special time of their lives. Cool For Kids W

e’ve all felt that sting of tomato soup against chapped lips, or the uncontrollable itch of a body starved of TLC during the colder months. So imagine what it feels like for young skin, that’s so much more delicate than our own? “A child’s skin is still developing, so it’s much more sensitive to dryness,” acknowledges Joanna Jensen, founder of Childs Farm, who produce a range of award-winning products for babies and children. “Skin is the first line of defence against infection and dehydration. Newborn and young children’s skin absorbs and loses water more quickly than a grown up’s. It also has a thinner ‘stratum corneum’ - the outermost layer, which shields everything beneath.” Young or old, the drop in temperature brings challenges to skin, as we move in and out of the cold to very dry, heated areas, Jensen continues. “Actively keeping skin hydrated becomes a necessity, to prevent dry flakes or eczema. Moisturisation of all skin areas - even forgotten feet - is important, to ensure skin cells remain hydrated and plump, keeping irritation out.”

SOFT SKIN STARTS FROM WITHIN “The key to skincare starts from inside,” says Jonna Jalkanen, founder of Sophie La Girafe Cosmetics.

and if All else fails… There are always products designed to soothe and smooth parched skin. Here are three I’ve tested out on my own children and highly recommend...

“If our stomachs feel well, the rest follows, so focus on clean, basic food that’s not processed. Pure, organic produce can be a real benefit to children in terms of wellbeing.” The next step is skincare. “We believe the most essential thing is products which respect the natural lipid bilayer (that protects cells),” she adds. “If your skin feels dry after you shower and it craves moisture immediately, something is wrong. Use a mild cleanser and avoid over-washing children’s delicate skin, and moisturise as often as needed.” Jalkanen advises opting for gentle organic products when possible, and Jensen steers clear of anything containing mineral oils (petrochemical derivatives), SLSs, parabens or artificial colours. She also recommends giving skin and health a natural boost by increasing Vitamin C intake (which helps boost the production of collagen), keeping up the intake of omega-3 fatty acids (through walnuts, oily fish, avocado and olive oil) and eating wholegrains packed with selenium (which helps maintain skin elasticity). For an additional skincare boost, both the Sophie La Girafe Cosmetics founder and Liz Earle, co-founder of the renowned skincare brand, advise combining a cream with an oil for a supernourishing skin treatment, which can then be used on any part of the body that’s affected.

Grahams Natural Kids Eczema Cream, £18.99 (www.grahamsskincare.co.uk)

“Apply a moisturiser all over you and your little one’s face, body and hands once or twice a day, to keep skin in good order,” advises Jensen. “Apply more to face and hands before going outside; red cheeks don’t only mean it’s cold, but that skin is getting dehydrated.” It’s also worth popping an SPF on children’s faces before they go outside, especially if it’s cold or windy.

HELPING HAND “Hands are very susceptible to getting dry and chapped during winter months, as they’re often exposed to the harsh wind and cold,” says expert dermatologist Dr Emma Wedgeworth. “Use an emollient wash instead of your normal soap and a good dermatological hand cream, as often as possible, with cotton gloves at night if necessary.”

KEEP BATHING BRIEF Hot baths are really dehydrating, so try to keep the temperature less hot than normal, make them short, use a moisturising bubble bath and apply a moisturiser to skin within five minutes of getting out.

HAIR REPAIR Green People Mum & Baby Rescue Balm, £9.95 (www.greenpeople.co.uk)

The scalp can also be prone to dryness at this time of year, so use a shampoo which is suitable for sensitive skin, and a really thick moisturising conditioner. It’s best to avoid the hairdryer if at all possible, too.

“W

elcome to the world, Max Mario Fletcher,” Giovanna Fletcher proudly declared on Twitter, celebrating the birth of her third baby this August. Now, she’s delightedly showing off the beautiful nursery she’s created for him in the home she shares with musician husband, Tom - of McFly and McBusted fame - and their other sons: Buzz, four, and two-year-old Buddy. The bestselling novelist and podcast guru worked with online interiors specialist, Wayfair.co.uk, to revamp a bedroom and transform it into an airy, gender-neutral, tranquil space ready for the family’s newest arrival. “I really wanted to freshen up the space, as it’s not been redesigned since it became Buzz’s room four years ago and it looked really tired and worn,” explains Giovanna, 33. “I wanted a clean space that felt homely and calming but full of sweet details and practical, affordable picks. It was important it was gender neutral as we didn’t find out the sex before he was born.”

36 OCT/NOV 2018

“The jungle-themed wallpaper is stunning and adds so much to the space, while also being neutral. I really love a statement design,” Fletcher enthuses. “We have flamingos in the downstairs loo, an intricate story-based design in the boys’ room and then full on ‘flower power’ in my office.” “The teepee tent (Hokku Designs Play Tent, £136.99, Wayfair) is gorgeous - such a unique but affordable touch,” she adds. “I can really imagine him lying in there and taking it all in. “There are also so many textures to explore with the cushions, throws and rugs, and the muted pastel shades help make it all look so beautiful.” “I’m also really happy with the wardrobe and changing unit. Babies come with a lot of stuff,” says the new mum. “Being the third child, this baby is inheriting a fair few clothes, so it’s good to have somewhere to put it all.” The Fletchers have a busy lifestyle. Giovanna writes romantic fiction and blogs about life as a mum - plus there’s the Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast she hosts; she documented her third

pregnancy throughout, sharing details with her social media fans. As well as performing and touring with his bands, guitarist and singer-songwriter Tom also writes - children’s fiction - and this year saw the couple publish Eve Of Man, the first book in a trilogy they’re co-writing. “We moved into our house 12 years ago, when we were only 21 years old, and kept it just as it was initially,” reveals Fletcher - Tom and Giovanna were childhood sweethearts after meeting aged 13 at the Sylvia Young Theatre School, and married in 2012. “We bought a show house, which was great for us at the time as it was hassle-free and looked stunning,” she recalls. “But as time went on, we realised it didn’t really show off our personalities or interests. “About two years ago, we decided to make some upgrades - the house is now a collection of the things we love.” There’s a music room for Tom, 33, and one end of their spacious lounge converts into a cinema space. “Having children also forced us to look at our home differently. Before we became parents, we

did a first aid course which led us to an extensive ‘risk assessment’ in the house. It completely freaked us out, and made us view everything as a potential threat,” Fletcher adds, laughing. “So glass went, any sharp corners were frowned upon, stair gates went in and locks were fitted on locks!” She feels that since the redecoration, they’ve been able to have more fun with their space. “Growing up, I can remember being told off about doing anything that might damage the carpet, sofas or breakables. Our boys still have to be careful, of course, but I’d say our style has become more family-friendly,” Fletcher reflects. “Children take over and there’s not a single room that doesn’t contain some sort of child-related item! But I like rooms to reflect some personality, while being inviting and cosy. “Our home’s colourful, warm, inviting, cosy, inspiring and calming, depending on where you are in it. It’s also practical. I’m not one for useless faff.”

Santa didn’t cometo me…

every child deserves a family There are 55,000 foster families across the UK who are giving over 64,000 children a chance of a childhood in which they can thrive - but thousands more are desperately needed every year to care for our children.

40 OCT/NOV 2018

T

hey are a range of ages, from a variety of backgrounds. What they have in common is a difficult start in life and can no longer be brought up by their birth families. All these children need a loving, stable home. Children can live with a family in their local area wherever possible - local authorities have the ultimate responsibility to look after children and young people in care, directly recruiting foster carers. Fostering brings emotional rewards that are unmatched, and is one of the most varied, challenging and rewarding jobs you can do. Foster carers say it gives them a real sense of purpose and a tangible way to make a difference to other people’s lives and their own. There are many famous faces who in their childhood, found themselves part of the social care system and went on to be fostered. They were loved and nurtured and went on to achieve great things in their careers….Nelson Mandela, Steve Jobs, Coco Chanel, Pierce Brosnan, Fatima Whitbread, Damien Hirst and Debbie Harry are just some Giving a foster child the stability and encouragement that they need can help them accomplish anything. They need support and love to help them overcome their troubled backgrounds, make sense of who they are and grow up to be safe and secure. If you are able to offer love, commitment, time, patience and the motivation to want to understand how a child sees the world, then that is a great start and the rewards will be limitless. You may already have a family but feel you still have space for another child. Or you may be single and feel that you have masses of love, security and happiness to offer to a child who has had to deal with some awful environments and circumstances.

It is about providing the security of family life that they may not have experienced before. Children who experience unmet physical and emotional needs early in life can have their later development adversely affected, perhaps requiring different parenting techniques to a birth child. A child will need your ongoing support to help them understand about their birth family, discussing their history with them in a respectful way and highlight the positives in their past. That may sound daunting but there is plenty of support available, Whether you are married or single, divorced or living with a partner, gay or straight and whatever your cultural background, fostering may be for you. It is a commitment requiring skill, empathy, energy, patience – and a sense of humour! But there can be no greater reward than transforming the lives of some of the most vulnerable children in society.

Take a tour of our Toothbrushing Academy! How one London dentist is engaging its littlest patients in protecting those cheeky smiles from day one

T

hey might not have started big school yet, but that doesn’t mean your little ones can’t attend Toothbrushing Academy at Happy Kids Dental! Designed for children aged 0-3, Toothbrushing Academy is a fun way for children to get the best start in keeping their smile healthy and happy for life – all part of the preventive ethos of our unique, child-focused Marylebone practice.

3rd stop: hygiene and advice

“Toothbrushing Academy is a fun way for children to get the best start in keeping their smile healthy and happy for life”

Last stop: graduation!

First stop: the Brushing Station For young children, joining Happy Kids Dental also means “enrolling” in our Toothbrushing Academy! Their dental visit will start with a trip to our animal Brushing Stations – always a huge hit with children, who love using the oversized tooth brushes on our animal friends before learning how to clean their own teeth with their parent. Photos and videos are encouraged for reference (and a great selfie), and we’ll also recommend the best evidence-based products for your child to use at home – we have a wide range to suit children of all abilities.

2nd stop: the dental surgery We’ve kitted out our jungle-themed surgeries with TVs on the ceiling above the dental chair, a great way to help children relax while we chat with their parents. We’ll advise parents on starting an effective brushing routine at home – and how to stick to it. We also take “tooth selfies” with our intraoral cameras – radiation-free devices that are great for helping patients and parents understand what’s going on inside their mouth. 42 OCT/NOV 2018

Next, we’ll provide a gentle polish to help children get used to the idea of a visit to the hygienist, which will be recommended when they’re a little older. We’ll also discuss diet and nutrition, ways of preventing tooth decay, and ideas for healthy drinks and snacks. We follow up all appointments with a detailed email, including any “tooth selfies” we’ve taken and personalised oral care advice.

On graduation day – after the patient turns 3 – our mini-alumni receive a special certificate and have their photo taken in a graduation gown and hat. It’s a great sense of achievement and a way to ensure those early brushing habits have happy associations that will stay with children as they grow up. It also helps kids look forward to their dental appointments, preventing fears and phobias, and gives parents the chance to discuss any concerns they may have, from teething to meal planning. Want to enrol your child at Toothbrushing Academy? Get in touch today and we’ll put them on the path to a lifetime of happy smiles! Happy Kids Dental 020 7078 0822 www.happykidsdental.co.uk

Let’s talk fee assistance M

any parents believe that their child needs to be awarded a scholarship in order to receive financial help from a school. This isn’t the case. Over 168,000 private school pupils (33% of all pupils) get some sort of financial help. The 2018 ISC annual census shows that many schools have extended bursary provision in the last year providing almost £400m means-tested fee assistance for pupils. The ways in which schools assess how they are going to give families a bursary have now become much more generous and will continue to do so.

“Over 200 of the UK’s leading schools all under one roof” So why do schools offer bursaries? It goes back to the mission of most independent schools, where the founders wanted to pay for poor scholars to have an education for social mobility and the alleviation of poverty. It’s in the schools’ ethos. As Mark Bailey (High Master of St Paul’s School) and David Goodhew (Headmaster of Latymer Upper), both agreed in our education theatres last year, diversity in independent schools benefits all pupils. ‘Our parents want us to be a school for people 50 OCT/NOV 2018

from all walks of life, from diverse backgrounds, culturally, social-economically, because it helps one feel like real life in the modern world.’ – David Goodhew, Headmaster of Latymer Upper We can’t tell you how much financial aid you might receive as schools differ widely in how they make decisions and, of course, how much money they have for such purposes. Some schools, such as St Paul’s, consider families with a surprisingly high overall level of income (£120,000) whereas others have a much lower income threshold. Schools are autonomous when it comes to offering fee assistance – there are no fixed rules. The best way to find out what each school has to offer, and if you could be considered for some sort of financial aid, is to speak individually to the schools. At the Independent Schools Show, we have over 200 of the UK’s leading schools all under one roof, providing parents with the perfect opportunity to meet schools one-to-one and get your questions answered. You can also hear from experts in the field in our two education theatres, covering topics such as affordability. www.schoolsshow.co.uk

his was a question posed after the last Ofsted inspection at Little People of Fulham. Like many nursery managers, Jane Gleasure concentrated on the “foundations…which lay with the quality of staff and their skills” focusing on keeping them motivated, well qualified, develop in-house and external training, regular team meetings and following best practice Jane believes you can see the improvements in the happy contented children at play. Recent achievements such as achieving Bronze & Silver awards by the Healthy Early Years Partnership and the Millie’s mark for excellence in First Aid training and practice result from inspirational and passionate leadership. All settings will follow the Early Years Foundation stages of learning, but inspectors are looking for the children to be truly engaged with the learning process. Much of this you can see in the children’s work, development folders or on the display boards. The 11+ Guide for Parents What is 11+? The 11+ is an examination administered to children while in their last year of primary school (Year 6) who are looking to gain a place at an independent school or state funded grammar school. The ‘11’ refers to the school entry age, so most children are 10 years old when they sit the exam.

Connect: The 11+ can include four disciplines, verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, Maths and English. Verbal Reasoning: This involves the child thinking about words and text and solving problems, sequences, codes and relationships between words. Non Verbal Reasoning: This involves the child being shown a series of figures arranged in a sequence or pattern and then being required to identify the missing figure. Maths: 11+ Maths tests the child’s understanding of numbers and other mathematical concepts ranging from decimals, fractions to percentages. Most questions require mathematical problem solving where pupils need to understand and apply mathematical concepts to solve the challenges. English: Children will be expected to complete a creative writing task where due attention is given to planning, good sentence construction and original ideas progression within the writing as well as evidence of a broad vocabulary. A reading comprehension will test the children’s ability to decode text, understand figurative language, character analysis and plot development.

Interview Process Following the written tests children are invited for the interview. Schools will be assessing for bright articulate confident and well-mannered children 54 OCT/NOV 2018

who will feel at ease within the school community they hope to gain a place at! Children are asked a range of open questions, may have to read aloud and engage in oral comprehension questions related to the text. They may be asked to reflect on a moral question, share thoughts on favourite books or reflect on any range of question openers they might be asked.

11+ Joys. Do not stop all the clocks, cut off the playdates or prevent the children from playing with cheerful playmates. Do not silence the conversation and with muffled hum bring out the timed, verbal reasoning and comprehension papers. Do not circle overhead scribbling in the sky “It’s your 11+ your future depends on it” “This is our first choice! What will be the backup?” Remember that school is your North, your South, your East and West, Your working week and your Sunday rest, School will be your guide, your compass in the sky; They will lead your child to 11+ success. The practice papers are not wanted put every one away. Pack up the timed tests and dismantle the countdown and ticking clock. Throw away the guide to interviews and read, read, read! Throw away the test papers and talk, talk, talk. Play netball, hockey, join a band club, build a car, bake a cake, estimate the weekly shopping costs, read the bus timetable, navigate a map, challenge with a chess game, compete in a scrabble game, perform in a play, learn to knit, to hammer a nail and climb trees. Remember to maintain a balance. Your preparatory school will guide; parents I ask you to support by keeping a healthy balance of work, rest and play. www.stanthonysgirls.co.uk

NEW TRENDS FOR AUTUMN/ WINTER 2018 Katie Wright

cheat sheet

“There’s lots to be excited about on the fashion front for autumn/winter, because the catwalks gave us some stunning - and, for once, wearable - trends”

presents your new season

A

utumn is well and truly here. The summer collections have long since been cleared from shop floors and the first drops of the new season have arrived, with snuggly sweaters and big leather boots making the prospect of dipping temperatures not quite so depressing after all. That’s right, there’s lots to be excited about on the fashion front for autumn/winter, because the catwalks gave us some stunning - and, for once, wearable - trends, and now you can shop them to your heart’s content on the high street. But don’t, whatever you do, start spending until you’re up to speed with the season’s style forecast. Here are the key fashion themes you need to know about for AW18 and how to shop them now...

Animal print If you’ve taken even a cursory glance at the high street of late, it can’t have escaped your notice that animal prints are everywhere. That’s because leopard roared back into fashion on the catwalks, seen everywhere from Max Mara to Tom Ford, while zebra was trotted out at Balenciaga and Halpern, and tiger print growled on the girls at Bottega Veneta. Try the trend: Dorothy Perkins Beige Brushed Leopard Print V-Neck Jumper, currently reduced to £22.50 from £30

Leather An overarching theme of ‘clothes as armour’ emerged from the shows, and leather played a big part in that. The leather dress is one of the key pieces of the season, therefore, as seen at Stella McCartney (rouched), Givenchy (belted) and Victoria Beckham (collared). Try the trend: Sosandar Navy Zip Through Leather Look Collared Dress, £69 58 OCT/NOV 2018

a model on the Roksanda AW18 catwalk

Seventies The decade most designers plundered this season? It was without doubt the Seventies, specifically the collars, coats and colours. Collars were long and sharp at Louis Vuitton and Chloe. Coats were big and fluffy (Vuitton again) or suede at Tory Burch and Coach. The colours - brown, beige, mustard, chestnut were everywhere, particularly the cosy layers at Roksanda and Miu Miu. Try the trend: Miss Selfridge Rust Brown Corduroy Baker Boy Hat, £12; Teddy Coat, £65; Rust Tile V-Neck Pinafore Dress, £28; Stripe Wide Neck Ruffle Tee, £20 (shoes, stylist’s own; coat and tee available later in September)

Tweed A tweed transformation took place throughout the season, the traditional fabric given a modern spin by designers. At Altuzarra, that meant sharp overcoats while at Prada it was bright hues, but the most creative example was in London, where Matty Bovan showed deconstructed woven skirt suits with fabulous houndstooth boots. Try the trend: Glamorous.com Multi Tweed Button Front Blazer, £42

Pleats A knee-length pleated skirt has become a summer staple in recent years, but now designers are making the case for wearing a longer length in winter. From the elegant evening styles at Emilia Wickstead and Lanvin, to the cream creations at JW Anderson and Victoria Beckham, the one thing they all have in common is that they’re delightfully swishy. Try the trend: Topshop Pleated Crepe Skirt, £69

The Queen

a model wearing Miss Selfridge Selfridge.

The Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex may get the lion’s share of the fashion column inches, but on the AW18 catwalks, the Queen was the undisputed style icon. The most literal interpretation was at Toga, where Her Majesty doppelgangers, complete with gloves and head scarves, appeared on the runway. Regal silks and florals also made an appearance at Celine, Moschino, Richard Quinn and more, while the Town and Country tweeds trend also referenced the royal family. Try the trend: Lipsy Floral High Neck Blouse, £34, Next

Headgear Hoods, balaclavas, berets, head scarves - all manner of millinery appeared in the AW18 collections. There were even crowns and tiaras at Dolce & Gabbana (there’s the royal influence again), but if you’re looking for something a bit less ostentatious, try a Versace inspired beret or floral head scarf instead. Try the trend: TK Maxx Euroseta Fashion Black & Purple Silk Floral Scarf, £16.99 OCT/NOV 2018 59

Papaya Gold PawPaw Moisturising Balm, £5.99, FeelUnique.com “I can’t ever be too far from a lip salve - I just love PawPaw. It hasn’t got a scent, and it’s blummin’ good. ith decades of modelling under her belt (she was discovered aged just 15) and a make-up artist for a sibling (sister Jemma also trod the catwalks before discovering her creative calling), you’d think Jodie Kidd knows a thing or two about cosmetics. That she does. Asked about her beauty essentials, the 38-year-old is more than happy to spill the beans, chatting animatedly about British brands, natural ingredients and her “little secret” serum. And unlike other celebs, who put their enviable looks down to simply drinking lots of water, the model-turned-presenter’s top five is made up entirely of skincare products, proving that her youthful complexion isn’t due to good genes alone. Want that supermodel glow? Well, we can’t give you Jodie’s cheekbones, but we can reveal her musthave beauty buys and why she loves them...

BEAUTY FROM THE CATWALK takes a look at what’s proved popular on the catwalk.

Prudence Wade

E

ven though it’s called London Fashion Week, it might as well be called London Fashion And Beauty Week as far as we’re concerned. We’ll let that slide - it’s admittedly not that catchy an alternative name. It has to be said, though, the hair and make-up looks on the catwalk were just as carefully considered as the clothes. Beauty can make or break a fashion show, and as such, designers have been hugely experimental with their looks this season. If you’re keen on updating your hair and make-up game, here are the key beauty trends that have come out of London Fashion Week...

It’s all about glowing skin Korean beauty trends have well and truly hit the UK, as most shows made clear, glowing, dewy skin the focus. The likes of Ashish and Preen by Thornton Bregazzi might have opposite styles when it comes to clothing, but they were both loving bright skin for their models. It meant backstage make-up artists had a slightly different job than normal. Few were seen wielding foundation or concealer, instead opting for illuminating balms and all manner of moisturisers. It was more about skin prep. Models in Victoria Beckham’s show were treated to a Foreo two-minute light therapy facial before their minimal make-up was applied, and similarly at Alexa Chung, models received a Japanese facial massage prior to the show. This might be a “no make-up make-up” look, but it still requires a fair amount of work.

Pastel hair, but with a punk-rock edge We suspect this particular trend might have been inspired by New York Fashion Week, as last Thursday Marc Jacobs debuted his collection with models sporting hair in cotton candy hues. London designers were also interested in pale pink locks, but with a distinctly more punk rock feel - take the Ashley Williams show, where hair was gelled upwards as though inspired by troll dolls. Matty Bovan’s models also rocked coloured hair. He experimented with pastels as well as brighter pinks and shocks of lilac.

You can’t go wrong with a bit of glitter This London Fashion Week might be looking forward to spring/summer next year, but there’s no harm in getting some beauty inspiration just 64 OCT/NOV 2018

in time for party season. Halpern is known for its glitter-tastic outfits, so it’s no surprise the make-up was designed to match, with eyelids covered in bold sparkly colours. The ultimate disco glam look popped even more against the models’ glowing skin. Simone Rocha provided a more subtle alternative with light dustings of silver over the lids, up to the brows.

Rough and ready splashes of colour Once dewy and glowing skin has been achieved, it’s all about rough and ready splashes of neon colour. The point of this trend isn’t to look put together instead you want to look like you’ve just rolled out of bed and splashed some colour on your face. For Ashish it was dabs of neon around the eye, and for the likes of Fyodor Golan and Marta Jakubowski, it was slicks of lipstick in fun shades of pink, orange and purple. We caught up with make-up artist Isamaya Ffrench backstage before the Ashish show, and she described the haphazard eyeshadow as “an undone look, like the model’s done it themselves.”

Wet-look hair was everywhere Ugly fashion is very much in vogue at the moment, and this seems to have expanded into the world of beauty as well. Wet look hair isn’t traditionally considered ‘pretty’, but it still stormed the catwalk. Long gone are big blow dries and glossy manes, and instead stylists opted for lank, almost stringy hair. Locks were either slicked back - like at House of Holland or Chalayan (the latter of which included two choice strands down the front of the face, which felt very 2007), or gelled down in uneven clumps over the face - as at Ashish. Designers from Markus Lupfer to Preen and even Victoria Beckham were all fans.

BEYONCE ON PRE-ECLAMPSIA

The singer says the condition, also known as toxemia, put her on bed rest. words: Prudence

Wade, Press Association

B

eyonce is certainly no stranger to breaking boundaries - she’s the most nominated woman in the history of the Grammy Awards, as well as being one of the world’s best-selling music artists of all time. Now, she’s made waves with her September cover of Vogue. It’s rumoured she was responsible for choosing Tyler Mitchell to shoot the pictures, making it the first time in the magazine’s history that a black photographer has done the cover. To accompany the striking photos, Beyonce told her story in her own words, covering everything from body acceptance to her ancestry. The star rarely gives interviews, so it was surprising that she was so open about the difficulties during pregnancy. She says: “I was 218 pounds (15.5 st) the day I gave birth to Rumi and Sir. I was swollen from toxemia and had been on bed rest for over a month. My health and my babies’ health were in danger, so I had an emergency C-section.” Toxemia is another term used for pre-eclampsia - here’s everything you need to know about the condition unique to pregnancy. What are the symptoms? The two earliest signs of pre-eclampsia are high blood pressure and protein in your urine. Obviously these aren’t exactly things you can diagnose on your own, but the NHS says they should be picked up during antenatal appointments. Further symptoms could include; swelling of feet, ankles, face and hands, headaches, vision issues and pain below the ribs. Who is at risk? Pre-eclampsia normally occurs around the second half of the pregnancy, or just after the baby is delivered. According to the NHS, it’s a relatively rare

68 OCT/NOV 2018

condition that affects up to 6% of pregnancies, with severe cases occurring in 1-2%. Chances of developing pre-eclampsia are heightened if you already suffer from things like diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease or lupus. Chances are also increased if you’re expecting multiple babies - like Beyonce who gave birth to twins. How is it treated? If you’re at risk of developing preeclampsia, the NHS says you might be advised to take low-dose aspirin every day from your 12th week until the baby is born. Strangely, doctors don’t know the exact cause of pre-eclampsia, but believe it is to do with something going wrong with the placenta. It could perhaps be due to this lack of understanding around the condition that means it’s difficult to treat. For the majority of sufferers, toxemia is cured only when the baby is delivered. Symptoms have to be closely monitored to ensure that they’re not worsening, and in many cases labour is either induced or the woman has a C-section like Beyonce. Another suggestion the NHS makes is taking medication to lower your blood pressure before giving birth. Most women with pre-eclampsia will deliver healthy babies and fully recover, however if it’s undiagnosed it can lead to eclampsia, a serious condition that can be lifethreatening to the mother and baby.

THE ROYAL HISTORY OF GIVING BIRTH Royal babies have been a source of fascination for centuries. words: Lauren Taylor, Press Association

T

he Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to her third child in the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in London in April, just as she did with Prince George and Princess Charlotte. But this is a relatively short tradition for the royal family. Most prince and princesses through history have been born in palaces and castles. If you think the media circus around royal babies is big now, it’s always been a huge deal - in fact, probably even more so because of the divine power and political importance that was traditionally placed on the monarchy.

16th and 17th century Back in the 1500s, royal births in Britain were preceded with a royal procession to where they’d give birth, and thousands of members of the public followed. The royal mum-to-be would address the crowds before going inside to give birth. During this time though, giving birth was considered pretty dangerous - many women died in childbirth. Around the time that Queen Elizabeth I was born in 1533, royal women were told to write a will before going into labour. Protocol at the time was for the room to be kept dark, tapestries were draped over the windows, and very little fresh air allowed in. It was supposed to replicate the womb, but it sounds like a pretty claustrophobic environment for the woman in labour. 70 OCT/NOV 2018

18th century Until the mid 1700s, childbirth was a women’s business - men were never present. Royal births were also very public, especially in French royalty. It’s been well documented that 200 people watched Marie Antoinette give birth in 1778, and that she was almost crushed by the huge group of people who poured into the bed chamber when the doctor called that the baby was coming. Apparently, people were climbing on furniture to get a better view. In Britain, it was a more modest group, ranging from around 40 people to a handful of VIPs, but most likely strangers to the royal mum-to-be.

19th century There were two schools of thought around this time - intervention and non-intervention. Forceps to help free a stuck baby had been introduced, but were considered controversial. But when Princess Charlotte died in 1817 after giving birth to a stillborn baby following a 50 hour labour, there was a national outpouring of grief. Her physician Sir Richard Croft was criticised for not using forceps, and afterwards they came to be used as standard during tricky births. Until the mid 19th century Women were given no pain relief during childbirth (the pain was seen as punishment for original sin). Although chloroform was discovered as an effective relief in 1847, it was still seriously frowned upon. Then Queen Victoria did something pretty important for women everywhere, by demanding pain relief for her eighth labour in 1853. After that, chloroform was used widely to ease the pain, by inhaling it from a handkerchief. It also led the way for other pain relief methods, and royal and noble women were soon seen as too delicate to bear the pain of labour. Most opted for what was known as ‘twilight sleep’ - a concoction of drugs to make them unconscious for a ‘painless’, drama-free birth. It’s not as blissful as it sounds though, it erased the memory of the birth altogether, but there were reports of women becoming psychotic and screaming in pain under the influence of the drugs, and consequent side effects for babies.

Clockwise from left: : Antoinette of France; Queen Alexandra with her five children, including George V, the Queen’s grandfather, in 1875; Queen Elizabeth II as a baby, with her parents King George VI and Queen Elizabeth; The Queen with her infant son, Prince Charles in 1949; Prince Charles and Princess Diana with baby William in 1982; Duke and Duchess of Cambridge with Princess Charlotte in May 2015 (Daniel LealOlivas/PA Photos); Queen Victoria in 1897. in Paddington, west London. And it’s become the new tradition, with The Duchess of Cambridge following suit for her three births. Prince Charles was present for the birth of his two sons and the Duke of Cambridge, of course, followed suit. Some traditions have never changed though continued for the birth of Kate and William’s third child Louis. News of the royal birth was announced on an easel attached to the railings of Buckingham Palace, and marked with a gun salute by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery.

Early 20th century In 1926 Queen Elizabeth II became the first British monarch to be born in a private house, rather than a palace or a castle, since the Middle Ages, and it was by caesarean section. Traditionally the home secretary attended royal births (Sir William Joynson-Hicks was present at the Queen’s birth). It was all down to a paranoia that the baby might be swapped, in the instance that the baby was stillborn, so a parliamentary member had to be there to confirm that the newborn was in fact a real heir. This tradition ended in 1936 after the Queen’s cousin Princess Alexandra was born. Strangely, it was customary for fathers not to attend births. In 1948 Prince Philip did not attend Prince Charles’ birth - he was said to be playing squash, followed by a swim. Like many royal women before her, the Queen was reportedly put in a ‘twilight sleep’ state for the birth, as depicted on the Netflix series The Crown.

Late 20th century to today Princess Diana was a true trailblazer in the royal family. She was the first to break royal birth tradition when she opted to have Prince William in a hospital - the private Lindo Wing of St Mary’s

Complementary therapies and support services available to women with breast cancer: Physiotherapy and occupational therapy Specialist cancer physiotherapists aim to improve quality of life through rehabilitation programmes that are tailored to individual needs throughout treatment and recovery. Occupational therapists can assess your home environment to ensure a smooth transition when you leave hospital. They can also assist in organising care in the community should this be required. Prosthesis and bra fitting service Finding the right bra after breast cancer surgery can be tricky, so it is reassuring to have someone to advise on the correct fitting and also on partial prostheses (to even out breast shapes post-

breast conserving surgery), or for full prostheses (following mastectomy). Macmillan counselling service Cancer brings about many changes in a person’s life emotional as well as physical. Counselling provides an important means of support for you and your family. Massage service As part of your treatment plan, massage sessions can be helpful for those undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy to aid relaxation, alleviate tension and stress, and improve body comfort. BABY FIRST AID ADVICE FROM THE ROCK The Rock is encouraging us to brush up on our baby first aid - here’s what we all need to know. words: Liz

Connor, Press Association

A

s well as being a Hollywood actor, producer, fully-fledged Instagram star (oh, and there’s rumours of him running for US President in 2020), Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has found time in his busy schedule to brush up on his baby CPR skills. The 45-year-old Baywatch star, who is expecting his second daughter with girlfriend Lauren Hashian this spring, took to Instagram to post an important message about parent safety to his 100 million followers last night. “You hope there’s never an emergency where you never have to deploy the skill,” Johnson wrote. “Since we have another baby girl on the way - I wanted to make sure myself, my family, and our staff took another choking prevention and CPR course on infants, children and adults.” He “highly” recommended learning CPR to his fans because you “never know what may happen and it’s always best to be ready”.

So what exactly is baby first aid and how do you do it? CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It’s a life-saving medical procedure which is given to someone who is in cardiac arrest. In the event of an emergency, it helps to pump blood around the baby’s body when their heart can’t. To carry out CPR, a person presses up and down on the casualty’s chest (chest compressions) and gives them a series of rescue breaths to help save their life. Many new parents worry about their baby not breathing from incidents such as drowning at bath time or stopping breathing in the night. The Red Cross has four-hour baby first aid courses available regularly in around 50 UK venues, but if you can’t attend a local session, there are plenty of important pointers you can pick up at home. St. John Ambulance has advice on administering CPR to your baby, recommending that all parents learn the first aid skill in the event of an emergency where your baby is unresponsive and not breathing. “If your baby is not responding to you, try to see if they react when you gently tap or flick the sole of their foot,” says St. John Ambulance. “If they are unresponsive and not breathing normally, open their airway and check their breathing again by looking for chest movement, listening for the sounds of normal breathing and seeing if you can feel their breath on your cheek.” 80 OCT/NOV 2018

If you can’t feel your baby’s breath, you need to call 999 and start CPR straight away. If you’re on your own, experts advise you give one minute’s worth of CPR before you call for help.

How to give rescue breaths to a baby If there is anything in their mouth, pick it out and ensure the airway is clear and open. Take a breath in and place your lips around the baby’s mouth and nose to form an airtight seal. If you cannot make a seal around the mouth and nose, close the baby’s mouth and make a seal around the nose only. Blow steadily into the mouth until the chest rises. Remove your mouth and allow the chest to fall. Repeat four times more. Now give 30 chest compressions.

How to give chest compression to a baby Place two fingertips of your lower hand on the centre of the baby’s chest. Press down vertically on the breastbone, and press the chest down by at least one-third of its depth. Release the pressure without moving your fingers from their chest. Allow the chest to come back up fully - this is one compression. Repeat this 30 times, at a rate of about twice a second - the speed of the song ‘Staying Alive’.Now give two rescue breaths. Carry on giving 30 chest compressions followed by two rescue breaths for as long as you can, or until help arrives. Getting into the recovery position If the baby starts breathing normally again, stop CPR and put them in the recovery position. To do this, cradle them in your arms, with their head tilted downwards. This will keep their airway open and stop them choking on their tongue or breathing in any vomit. It’s important to continue holding the baby in the recovery position until help arrives. Experts say doing CPR right away can double or even triple a baby’s chance of surviving cardiac arrest, so it’s well worth taking The Rock’s advice and memorising these key steps so you know how to act in a life-threatening emergency.
