childbirth By Lisa Salmon

I

ncreasing numbers of pregnant women are personalising their labour by choosing alternative methods and locations to give birth. New research by the parenting website Netmums, has found that seven out of 10 women select how and where they give birth, with choices ranging from outdoor or silent births and slow caesareans, to swimming with dolphins.

women simply accepted whatever happened during labour, even if things were done without their consent. “But now there’s so much information at women’s fingertips, they’re standing up and saying ‘no’ to the medicalisation of childbirth,” she stresses. “I think it’s instinct - they don’t want to be pushed and shoved into how the professionals think birth should be any more. “Women are taking back birth, and it’s absolutely excellent.”

TAKING BACK BIRTH

ALTERNATIVE AID

Virginia Howes, an independent midwife from the Kent Midwifery Practice, says that in the past

The Netmums study found 56% of mumsto-be fancy including one of the new wave of

alternative birth techniques in their birth plan, with more than a third considering hypnobirthing (using self-hypnosis to manage pain), and almost one in five opting for the experimental slow caesarean - a new caesarean technique which minimises anaesthetic use for a more natural birth experience. “Caesarian-section mums often feel they miss out on those first few precious moments as the baby is rushed off,” explains Howes. “In a slow caesarian, a woman can reach down and hold her baby and bring it up to her chest, in the same way as she would during a vaginal birth.”

DOLPHIN PAIN RELIEF

Another one in 10 women aspire to an unassisted birth, where there’s no medical intervention, 2% opt for a silent birth, where everyone else in the room keeps quiet, 1% want to give birth outdoors, and 1.5% are even interested in swimming with dolphins during labour in a bid to calm themselves and ease pain. However, Howes points out: “Swimming with dolphins is such a rare choice because of the practicalities. It will hardly ever be done.” A lot more accessible than swimming with dolphins, 85% of mums in labour use relaxation methods including aromatherapy, visualisation, meditation, water birth, positioning strategies, massage, acupuncture and reflexology. But although the majority of mums want to choose their own type of birth, 30% still don’t write a birth plan, and 8% of mums would rather leave birthing decisions to doctors. And maternity staff have mixed reactions to their requests - while six out of 10 mums felt well supported in making their birth plans, one in five found it difficult to get the type of birth they wanted, and nearly half said the availability of birthing options depended on factors such as time of day or staffing levels.

KEEPING UP APPEARANCES

Louise Silverton, director for midwifery at the Royal College of Midwives, says: “Midwives will do their very best to support women in the

animals such as dolphins. We want women to have the best possible birth experience, and we also want that experience to be safe.”

You’d think the birthing process was Today’s mums are also concerned about how they look on the big day, with enough to worry about - but today’s than 40% considering make-up, hair and outfits in advance mums are also concerned about how they look on the big day, with more than 40% considering make-up, hair and outfits in advance. choices they make.”We would encourage women to Gone are the days of wearing an old T-shirt or discuss the options available with their midwife, so nightie through labour - 30% of mums plan to buy that they can make an informed choice.” Silverton a special outfit to wear, 31% intend to get a leg or says pressure on services often prevents women bikini wax, 12% want to get their nails done, 9% from accessing choices such as home births, will have their hair done in advance, and 5% plan to and she stresses: “As a woman’s pregnancy and pack hair straighteners or styling tongs. labour progresses, some options are no longer “Women seem to think about aesthetics a lot recommended as there may be safety implications more than they used to,” says Howes.”When they’re at this late stage for both mother and baby. “We actually in labour, they don’t care how they look - in would also strongly discourage, for example, a birth the throes of labour you won’t care if Brad Pitt without skilled medical help or one involving wild walks in and you haven’t got any make-up on.”But leading up to it, it’s about having control of the birth and not being passive.”

SOCIAL MEDIA SHARING

And mums also want to look good on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, which are now an extension to the birthing experience. More than half of mums (53%) share their newborn baby’s first picture on social media, and 10% live post throughout their labour and birth. Howes says: “Birth shouldn’t be hidden, it should be celebrated. Women have been empowered to know birth doesn’t have to be like convention portrays it - it isn’t something we endure any more, it’s something we relish.”

You and your body T

just after birth

he first few days with your new baby can be a very emotional time for you and your partner. There is the excitement of getting to know your baby, but you will also be tired, and your body will be recovering from the birth. Keep your baby close to you and your partner as much as you can. The more you can both hold and cuddle your baby, the more confident you will both feel.

How you feel after the birth

You may well feel tired for the first few days, so make sure you get plenty of rest. Even just walking and moving about can seem like hard work. For a lot of mothers, the excitement and pleasure of the new baby far outweigh any problems. But you can begin to feel low or rather depressed, especially if you feel you cannot look after your baby in the way you would like to. Giving birth is an emotional and tiring experience, and your hormones change dramatically in the first few days. Some women get the “baby blues” and feel weepy around three to five days after giving birth. Feeling weepy can be worse if your labour was difficult, or you have other worries. Make sure you and your partner know the signs of postnatal depression.

10 DECEMBER 2016/JANUARY 2017

Some women worry because they don’t love their baby immediately. But it’s not always love at first sight. You may just need to give yourself time to bond with your baby. You can still care for your baby and provide all the warmth and security he or she needs in the meantime.

Your body in the first few days

Your body will have been through big changes over the past few days…. Your breasts To begin with, your breasts will produce a nutritious yellowish liquid called colostrum for your baby. On the third or fourth day, they may feel tight and tender as they start to produce milk. Wearing a supportive nursing bra may help. Your abdomen Your tummy will probably be quite baggy after delivery. Despite delivering your baby and the placenta, you’ll still be quite a lot bigger than you were before pregnancy. This is partly because your muscles have stretched. If you eat a balanced diet and get some exercise, your shape should gradually return to normal. Your bladder It’s quite common after having a baby to leak urine accidentally if you laugh, cough or move suddenly.

Pelvic floor exercises can help with this.

Postnatal exercises

Postnatal exercises will help to tone up the muscles of your pelvic floor and tummy, and help you get your usual shape back. They will also get you moving and feeling generally fitter. You may be able to attend a postnatal exercise class at your hospital. Ask your midwife or health visitor.

Recovering from a caesarean

It takes longer to recover from a caesarean section than it does from a natural birth. After a caesarean, you’ll feel uncomfortable and will be offered painkillers. You will usually be fitted with a catheter (a small tube that goes up into your bladder) for up to 24 hours. You may be prescribed daily injections to prevent blood clots (thrombosis). Depending on the help you have at home, you should be ready to leave hospital within two to four days. You’ll be encouraged to become mobile by getting out of bed and walking around as soon as possible, and your midwife or hospital physiotherapist will give you advice that will help you to recover. You can drive as soon as you can move without pain as long as you can perform an emergency stop. This could take up to six weeks.

Double Trouble

or Twice as Nice?

In the most recent survey, in 2012 more than 12,400 sets of twins and more than 226 sets of triplets or more were born in the UK. That means that about 1 in every 64 births in the UK today are twins, triplets or more. This is a big increase from 1978, when 1 in every 100 births was a multiple birth. Different types of twins

One-third of all twins will be identical and twothirds non-identical.

Identical twins

Identical (monozygotic) twins happen when a single egg (zygote) is fertilised. The egg then divides in two, creating identical twins who share the same genes. Identical twins are always the same sex, so if your twins are identical, you’ll have two girls or two boys and they’ll look very alike.

Non-identical twins

Non-identical (dizygotic) twins happen when two separate eggs are fertilised and then implant into the woman’s womb (uterus). These non-identical twins are no more alike than any other two siblings. Nonidentical twins are more common. The babies may 12 DECEMBER 2016/JANUARY 2017

be of the same sex or different sexes.

Are you carrying twins?

You might suspect that you are carrying more than one baby if: • You seem bigger than you should be for your dates • Twins run in your family • You have had fertility treatment It is usually possible to find out if you’re having twins through your dating ultrasound scan, which happens when you are 8-14 weeks pregnant. At the scan, you should be told whether the babies share a placenta (meaning they are identical) or if they have two separate placentas (meaning they can be identical or not). If this is not clear from the first scan, you should be offered another one. One-third of identical twins have separate placentas. This occurs when the fertilised egg splits before implanting in the uterus, up to four days after conception.

What causes twins?

Nobody knows what causes identical (monozygotic) twins. All pregnant women have approximately the same chance of having identical twins – about 1 in 350-400. Identical twins do not run in families. However, there are some factors that make having non-identical twins more likely:

• Non-identical twins are more common in some ethnic groups, with the highest rate among nigerians and the lowest among japanese • Older mothers are more likely to have nonidentical twins because they are more likely to release more than one egg during ovulation • Non-identical twins run on the mother’s side of the family, probably because of an inherited tendency to release more than one egg IVF can increase the chance of twins as more than one embryo may be transferred. After natural conception, about 1 in 80 births in the UK results in multiples, compared with 1 in 5 after IVF.

YUMMY MUMMY

baby’s name Choosing your

C

hoosing a name for your baby can be a daunting prospect. It stays with them for the rest of their life, so it is a big decision. Do you want to go for something traditional or modern? Popular or obscure? Do you use a family name or name them after someone who’s inspired you? What about middle names? Don’t panic. We’ve got stacks of valuable advice for you

Shortening baby names

Like a name that’s a shorter variant of another? Common sense says to put the longer version on the birth certificate. There’s no law that says you have to call your child by anything other than the shorter - invariably cuter - version, but you leave them the option, as they get older, to use the longer version when the occasion suits. Conversely, if you do opt to use the full variant of a name be prepared that everyone - school friends, teachers, relatives et al - will shorten it, regardless of whether you mind or not. Jonathan will become Johnny. Thomas will be Tom and nothing you can do or say will make a blind bit of difference.

Does your baby name go with your surname?

Once you’ve settled on a shortlist, the next hurdle is how the first name and surname work together because if ever there was the potential for disaster it is now. 14 DECEMBER 2016/JANUARY 2017

Don’t forget to add any middle initials into the equation (Chris P Bacon, anyone?) or the fact that your child’s first name can be shortened.

Middle names for your baby

Middle names seem to serve little purpose - until you’re naming your own child and then their use becomes immediately apparent. You could have a special relative’s name as your child’s middle name for example. The only thing you need to worry about at this stage is the issue of unintentional acronyms - just what do all those initials spell out? Charles Ramsay Archibald Pearce, beware.

Make a baby name shortlist

No matter how in tune you and your partner are, naming your child is one area where hitherto happy couples often fall out. If you can’t both agree on one definite winner, then your best bet is to draw up a shortlist of acceptable names and then one of you should point out in no uncertain terms that the person who has carried the baby for 40 weeks and then gone through a three-day labour gets the casting vote. RIGHT? • Say the name out load is the first thing - you’ll be amazed what gets crossed off! • A name that sounds cute as a baby may not sound so cute for an adult • Don’t forget what your surname is. Why on earth people choose names like Peter Peterson

No matter how in tune you and your partner are, naming your child is one area where hitherto happy couples often fall out.

is beyond me. Also acronyms - Alex Samuel Benjamin Oliver sounds lovely but spells out ASBO. • I advise everyone not to discuss probable name choices with everyone, as someone will always say ‘yuck, I know so and so with that name’ or say something that could put you off a name. Much better to keep it to yourself and announce it once the baby is born, people can’t try and sway you then.

Baby Bubbles Babies only need a bath two or three times a week, with a wash in between, but if your baby really enjoys it, bathe them every day! Here are a few tips on getting the best out of bathing your baby, keeping them safe, and smelling fresh. We alllove that clean baby smell! • Don’t bathe your baby straight after a feed or when they’re hungry or tired. •Have everything you need at hand: a baby bath filled with warm water, two towels, a clean nappy, clean clothes and cotton wool. • The water should be warm, not hot. Check it with your wrist or elbow and mix it well so there are no hot patches. • Hold your baby on your knee and clean their face first. • Next, wash their hair with plain water, supporting them over the bowl. • Once you’ve dried their hair gently, you can take off their nappy, wiping away any mess. • Lower your baby gently into the bowl or bath using one hand to hold their upper arm and support their head and shoulders.

16 DECEMBER 2016/JANUARY 2017

• Don’t add any liquid cleansers to the bath water. Plain water is best for your baby’s skin in the first month. • Keep your baby’s head clear of the water. Use the other hand to gently swish the water over your baby without splashing. • Never leave your baby alone in the bath, not even for a second. • Lift your baby out and pat them dry, paying special attention to the creases in their skin. This is a good time to massage your baby. Massage can help them relax and sleep. Avoid using any oils or lotions until your baby is at least a month old. If your baby seems frightened of bathing and cries, try bathing together. It’s easier if someone else holds your baby while you get in and out of the bath.

Cry

Baby A

ll babies cry, and some cry a lot. Crying is your baby’s way of telling you they need comfort and care. Sometimes it’s easy to work out what they want, and sometimes it isn’t. The most common reasons for crying are: • hunger • a dirty or wet nappy • tiredness • wanting a cuddle • wind • being too hot or too cold • boredom • overstimulation

Crying during feeds

Try some of the following ways to comfort your baby. Some may be more effective than others: • If you’re breastfeeding, let your baby suckle at your breast. • If you’re bottle feeding, give your baby a sterilised bottle. To avoid tooth decay don’t dip them in anything sweet. • Some older babies like a small cloth or blanket to use as a comforter. • Hold your baby close, move about gently, sway and dance, talk to them and sing. • Rock your baby backwards and forwards in the pram, or go out for a walk. • Find something for them to listen to or look at. This could be music, a rattle or a mobile above the cot. • Try stroking your baby’s back firmly and rhythmically, holding them against you or lying face downwards on your lap. You could also massage them with baby oil, gently and firmly. • Some clinics run baby massage courses. For information, ask your midwife or health visitor.

There are several reasons that can cause a baby to cry excessively. It can be exhausting if you’ve tried everything and nothing seems to comfort your baby.

How to calm a crying baby

Some babies cry and seem unsettled around the time of a feed. If you’re breastfeeding, improve your baby’s attachment. It may be something you’re eating or drinking. Some things will reach your milk within a few hours, while others may take 24 hours. You might want to consider avoiding dairy products, chocolate, fruit squashes, diet drinks and drinks containing caffeine. If this doesn’t work, try keeping a note of when the crying happens to see if there’s a pattern. Sometimes, crying during feeds can be a symptom of reflux, a common condition in which babies bring back milk after feeds.

If your baby cries constantly

Colic

Excessive crying could be a sign that your baby has colic. Everyone agrees that colic exists but no one knows what causes it. Some doctors think it’s a kind of stomach cramp. The crying sounds miserable and distressed, and stops for a moment or two, then starts up again, which suggests it could be caused by waves of stomach pain. The crying can go on for some hours. There may be little you can do except try to comfort your baby and wait for the crying to pass.

Never shake your baby

No matter how frustrated you feel, you must never shake your baby. Shaking moves their head violently, and can cause bleeding and brain damage. Talk to a friend, your health visitor or GP, or contact Cry-sis on 08451 228 669 (lines are open 9am to 10pm, 7 days a week).

Wisdom for healthy children’s teeth From brushing their first tooth to their first trip to the dentist, here’s how to take care of your children’s teeth. A regular teeth-cleaning routine is essential for good dental health. Follow these tips and you can help keep your kids’ teeth remain decay-free.

Toothbrushing tips

• Brush your child’s teeth for about 2 minutes twice a day: once just before bedtime and at least one another time during the day. • Encourage them to spit out excess toothpaste, but not to rinse with lots of water. Rinsing with water after will wash away the fluoride and make it less effective. • Supervise tooth brushing until your child is 7 or 8, either by brushing their teeth yourself or, if they brush their own, by watching how they do it. From the age of 7 or 8, they should be able to brush their own teeth, but it’s still a good idea to watch them now and again to make sure they brush properly and for about 2 minutes. • Guide your child’s hand so they can feel the correct movement.

Toothpaste tips

• Start brushing your baby’s teeth with fluoride toothpaste as soon as the first milk tooth breaks through. This helps to prevent and control tooth decay. • There’s no need to buy “children’s toothpaste”. Some of them don’t have enough fluoride. • Children under 6 who don’t have tooth decay can use a lowerstrength toothpaste, but must contain at least 1,000ppm fluoride. • Make sure children don’t eat or lick toothpaste from the tube. • Below the age of 3, children should use just a smear of toothpaste. • Children aged 3-6 should use a pea-sized blob of toothpaste.

20 DECEMBER 2016/JANUARY 2017

Taking your child to the dentist

• Take your child to the dentist when their first milk teeth appear, so they become familiar and get to know the dentist. The dentist can help prevent decay and identify any oral health problems at an early stage. Just opening up the child’s mouth for the dentist to take a look at is useful practice for the future. • When you visit the dentist, be positive about it and make the trip fun. This will stop your child worrying about future visits. • Take your child for regular dental check-ups.

BABY

Talk

F

rom your baby’s first gurgle, to his excitable chatter after a day at school, the ability to talk develops gradually. But before your baby says his first word, he’ll be picking up language skills from you and other adults around him. Here’s an idea of what you can expect, and when. But remember it’s completely normal for your child to reach these milestones a little earlier or later.

Baby

Birth - 3 months Crying is your baby’s first form of communication. Your newborn makes quiet, cooing sounds when he’s happy or content. These are typically single vowel sounds, such as “ooh” and “ah” with his tongue and lips. 2 - 3 months Your baby alters his cry according to his needs. 26 DECEMBER 2016/JANUARY 2017

As you get to know your baby, you may be able to distinguish a hunger cry from the cry he makes when he’s tired or uncomfortable. 3 - 4 months Your baby cries less often but will still cry when he’s uncomfortable or annoyed. He utters mostly vowel sounds, but cooing and gurgling is now a little more varied. Consonant sounds will begin to mix with vowels, such as “baba” or “yaya” 5- 6 months Your baby practises making his voice rise and fall (intonation)often in response to your baby talk and the faces you pull. He’ll be able to make sounds to get your attention, and will babble to himself and laugh when he plays Ask for help if... If your child isn’t making vocal sounds or eye contact with you by the time he’s six months old, talk to your doctor. 7- 12 months Your baby is babbling with greater variety by now,

making new sound combinations and intonations. He tries to copy your speech by putting consonants and vowels together, such as “bah-BAH-bah” or “no-no” He’ll have pretend conversations with you, taking turns to talk. He’ll recognise the names of familiar objects and toys, such as “car” and “teddy”.

Toddler

12 months The all-important first words will have been spoken by now, and were probably “mummum” or “dada”. Your toddler may use a few words, but he won’t be able to pronounce them clearly. 15 months Your toddler raises his voice at the end of a question and makes hand gestures, such as pointing and waving, to emphasise what he’s saying. He may be able to say up to six simple words. Ask for help if... If your child isn’t saying any

around him. 24 months Your child may know as many as 50 words by now, including some descriptive language. He’ll use short sentences consisting of two or more words with lots of pauses, such as “want milk”, “Baby ... fall down!” and “Me go... swings?” 2 – 3 years Your child knows about 200 words by now, including lots of verbs, and will be able to carry on a simple conversation about something in his immediate environment. He’ll be asking simple questions, such as “What?”, “Where?” and “Who?” a lot. Phrases expand from three-word sentences to five-word sentences. He may stutter or stammer while he’s thinking what to say, but this is normal. Ask for help if... If your two or three-year-old echoes your questions rather than answering them, or has been stuttering for more than six months, speak to your doctor.

Pre-schooler

3 - 4 years Your child will make words past tense by adding a “d” sound to verbs, and can talk about things in the future as well. He’ll make plurals by adding an “s” sound to nouns, such as “mans” and can use pronouns (I, she, we) correctly. He can talk and play at the same time, knowing between 800 words and 1,000 words. He can say sentences of four words to six words and repeat his favourite words such as “why,” “what,” and “who” often. You can understand him most of the time, and he can describe what happened if you were out of the room. By five years, speech is generally grammatically correct. Ask for help if.. If your child’s stuttering lasts for more than six months, or if he tenses his jaw or grimaces while trying to speak. If so, he may be referred to a speech therapist. Bear in mind it’s perfectly normal for your child to sound as though he’s stuttering if he trips up on his words in his excitement to communicate.

Your child may know as many as 50 words by now, including some descriptive language. He’ll use short sentences consisting of two or more words with lots of pauses, such as “want milk”, “Baby ... fall down!” and “Me go... swings?

words by the time he’s 15 months old, talk to your health visitor. 16 months Talking rather than just babbling out loud has started, even if it isn’t all that clear. He calls you to get your attention and nods and shakes his head for yes and no. Common consonant sounds such as t, d, n, w and h become part of his speech. 18 months Your toddler may know between six and 20 words, including nouns “mama”, verbs such as “eat”, and adjectives such as “cold”. 18 – 24 months Your toddler may have started to put two-word and three-word phrases together to form simple sentences, such as “Daddy go”, “go home now”, and “milk mess”. By 19 months about half of all children will be doing this. He’ll sometimes ask questions about the names of people and objects DECEMBER 2016/JANUARY 2017 27

Cool for W

e’ve all felt that sting of tomato soup against chapped lips, or the uncontrollable itch of a body starved of TLC during the colder months. So imagine what it feels like for young skin, that’s so much more delicate than our own? “A child’s skin is still developing, so it’s much more sensitive to dryness,” acknowledges Joanna Jensen, founder of Childs Farm, who produce a range of award-winning products for babies and children. “Skin is the first line of defence against infection and dehydration. Newborn and young children’s skin absorbs and loses water more quickly than a grown up’s. It also has a thinner ‘stratum corneum’ - the outermost layer, which shields everything beneath.” Young or old, the drop in temperature brings challenges to skin, as we move in and out of the cold to very dry, heated areas, Jensen continues. “Actively keeping skin hydrated becomes a necessity, to prevent dry flakes or eczema. Moisturisation of all skin areas - even forgotten feet - is important, to ensure skin cells remain hydrated and plump, keeping irritation out.”

SOFT SKIN STARTS FROM WITHIN

“The key to skincare starts from inside,” says Jonna Jalkanen, founder of Sophie La Girafe Cosmetics. “If our stomachs feel well, the rest follows, so focus on clean, basic food that’s not processed. Pure, organic produce can be a real benefit to children in terms of wellbeing.” The next step is skincare. “We believe the most essential thing is products which respect the natural lipid bilayer (that protects cells),” she adds. “If your skin feels dry after you shower and it craves moisture immediately, something is wrong. Use a mild cleanser and avoid over-washing children’s delicate skin, and moisturise as often as needed.” Jalkanen advises opting for gentle organic products when possible, and Jensen steers clear of anything containing mineral oils (petrochemical derivatives), SLSs, parabens or artificial colours. She also recommends giving skin and health a natural boost by increasing Vitamin C intake (which helps boost the production of collagen), keeping up the intake of omega-3 fatty acids (through walnuts, oily 28 DECEMBER 2016/JANUARY 2017

fish, avocado and olive oil) and eating wholegrains packed with selenium (which helps maintain skin elasticity). For an additional skincare boost, both the Sophie La Girafe Cosmetics founder and Liz Earle, co-founder of the renowned skincare brand, advise combining a cream with an oil for a supernourishing skin treatment, which can then be used on any part of the body that’s affected.

MOISTURISE

“Apply a moisturiser all over you and your little one’s face, body and hands once or twice a day, to keep skin in good order,” advises Jensen. “Apply more to face and hands before going outside; red cheeks don’t only mean it’s cold, but that skin is getting dehydrated.” It’s also worth popping an SPF on children’s faces before they go outside, especially if it’s cold or windy.

HELPING HAND

“Hands are very susceptible to getting dry and chapped during winter months, as they’re often exposed to the harsh wind and cold,” says expert dermatologist Dr Emma Wedgeworth. “Use an emollient wash instead of your normal soap and a good dermatological hand cream, as often as possible, with cotton gloves at night if necessary.”

KEEP BATHING BRIEF

Hot baths are really dehydrating, so try to keep the temperature less hot than normal, make them short, use a moisturising bubble bath and apply a moisturiser to skin within five minutes of getting out.

HAIR REPAIR

The scalp can also be prone to dryness at this time of year, so use a shampoo which is suitable for sensitive skin, and a really thick moisturising conditioner. It’s best to avoid the hairdryer if at all possible, too.

Childcare costs

£i6 ooo a year in the capital The average cost of childcare in London has soared to nearly £16,000 a year, according to a report.

T

he average couple in the United Kingdom spends a third of their income on childcare costs, says the report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). In other parts of the world parents spend around 15 per cent of their annual income on childcare. Families in London spend £15,700 a year on average finding nursery places for their children, the report states. The OECD added that spiralling childcare costs make the UK the worst country for couples with young children. The report states: “Such high costs are a strong deterrent to employment. It may not be financially worthwhile for both partners to work, especially in families with several children, and it is usually the mother who stays at home.” A report from the Family and Childcare Trust revealed that childcare in the capital is a third more expensive than the rest of the country.

30 DECEMBER 2016/JANUARY 2017

The report singled out Denmark and Sweden as examples of having good childcare systems, who offer publicly subsidised childcare.

How much will a day nursery place cost?

The typical cost of a full-time day nursery place is about £210 a week for a child younger than two. In some areas, such as London, the average cost rises to £280. Day nursery places tend to be more expensive for children under two. It gets a little cheaper as your child gets older. This is because babies and toddlers need more hands-on care, so the nursery has to employ more staff.

How much will it cost to hire a nanny?

A nanny is usually the most expensive childcare option. The average take-home salary for a live-in nanny ranges from £300 to £350 per week, depending on where you live. Day nannies charge between £400 and £475 per week. You may also want to offer other benefits to your nanny, such as the use of a car, private healthcare or gym membership.

When you hire a nanny you become an employer, and need to pay tax and national insurance for your employee. You’ll also need to set up and contribute to a pension if she’s between 23 and state retirement age.

W

e believe kids deserve a safe trampoline. Here at Springfree we know many parents worry about their kids on a trampoline, however our design provides peace of mind for the parents while the kids bounce and have fun. So how did it all come about? Twenty years ago Dr. Keith Alexander tried to find a safe trampoline for his kids, but found there was no such thing. In fact after conducting some research he found that over 100,000 kids a year were being sent to hospital because of traditional trampoline injuries. He was shocked by this statistic and as an engineer and a father he was compelled to do something about it! Dr. Alexander looked at what was causing trampoline injuries, then engineered out the impact zones responsible for the accidents. He replaced the springs with rods, creating the revolutionary SoftEdge™ system. Then he developed a strong flexible safety net that would stand up to all kinds of weather and moved the frame below the jumping surface making it impossible to fall on. Therefore creating the first trampoline without springs, hence our name Springfree. associated with that activity! Research proves that bouncing can significantly improve the developmental and physical health in both children and adults. Common improvements such as enhanced cardiovascular system, increased metabolism and muscular strength and a heightened awareness of your body and sense of balance. There are families all over the world who are benefiting from regular trampoline use. Kids and parents,

no matter their age & ability. The Springfree Trampoline provides a safe jumping space for all. How can I keep my children

safe on the ski slopes?

P

arents main concern is the safety of their children on the piste. All ski schools have a minimum of one instructor per group of only eight children, on average. Families who would like to experience skiing off piste should learn with an experienced instructor. You should never ski on your own off piste and if you did want to take your children off piste you should ensure they are of a high standard, and have an understanding of the snow conditions and an awareness of avalanche danger, and are carrying the correct safety equipment.”

What to take on the piste with you?

Skiing burns a lot of energy so ensure you take snacks for all the family out with you for the day. Take a back pack when skiing with the family. If there is one time you can feel guilt free about giving children sugar and chocolate it’s when you are skiing, because you know they are going to burn it straight off. Always ski with water as well, its thirsty work skiing all day. Ski schools in France are offered to children from five years old, and ski schools in Austria are from four years old. Encourage children to get on the slopes at a young age. This depends on the child though when leaving them in a ski school, if the

48 DECEMBER 2016/JANUARY 2017

child doesn’t mind being left alone and they tend to get on with other children.

Skiing as a family for the first time

Skiing as a family and taking the little ones for the first time can be a daunting experience as there are so many things to consider… 1: Choose a family-friendly resort that has a good selection of nursery slopes available – some resorts don’t have these, and you don’t really want to be teaching your kids to ski for the first time on a busy run with other skiers whizzing by. 2: Consider your kids ability and what size of resort is suitable for their level. You don’t want them heading across the mountain and ending up in another country – which is possible in a number of resorts! 3: Ensure that the hotel/resort you are staying in is easily accessible to the slopes. If not, you’ll

have to carry all the family’s equipment to and from the hotel and the pistes. Lugging your own skis and poles, as well as the children’s kit is not fun. 4: It’s very difficult to teach your own children to ski – even if you are a very capable skier. Kids tend to be more receptive to someone else teaching them so put them in a reputable ski school which means your children can keep progressing to even greater thrills in complete safety. 5: Don’t give young kids ski poles. They don’t need them, they’ll probably lose them and when learning, the poles will just be a distraction to learning technique with the skis.

It’s very difficult to teach your own children to ski – even if you are a very capable skier

McLaren Unveils Electric Car

...for Kids

M

cLaren is one of the most well-known and well-respected car makers in the world. And now the elite sports car manufacturer is offering an electric vehicle—for kids. You can start your child on the right track with McLaren’s incredible toy supercar… yes, the Ride On Electric McLaren P1 is technically a toy, but this Volcano Yellow supercar is not your typical children’s plaything. The diminutive Ride-On McLaren P1™ is aimed at enthusiasts under the age of six and differs from its larger brother in two important areas. Firstly, it has a central driving position, just like the iconic McLaren F1. Secondly, your little one will be able to experience what adults never could: an open-top McLaren P1™. Yet cleverly the design still retains McLaren’s signature dihedral doors. And like every McLaren, its acceleration is startling. The zero to maximum speed dash takes just two seconds, maximum speed being a heady 3mph. The environmentally-friendly machine surges into life via a one-button stop/start function automatically activating the lights and ‘airconditioning’ unit. An MP3 player and audio system is standard and helpfully already pre-programmed with every popular nursery rhyme. It also features a reverse gear in addition to its three speed, forward

transmission. Handy if you’ve arrived early for your appointment with Father Christmas. In a contrast to McLaren’s usual policy of offering limitless colour and trim combinations, this time the choice for the busy six year old is made easy with only one colour on offer: Volcano Yellow. The Ride On, electric McLaren P1TM is the first officially licensed product from McLaren Automotive to enter this growing market segment and is the most compact car yet to wear the McLaren badge. Hence customers ideally should be between 3-6 years old to drive it. Although young drivers beyond this age group might also fit. Needless to say, the car will no doubt make your child the envy of their friends, and you might be able to fit in a ride for yourself if you’re willing to squeeze. McLaren has released a fun video on their website showing the car being put through its paces by a small child The Ride On, electric McLaren P1TM is the first officially licensed product from McLaren Automotive, and is now available from selected McLaren Automotive retailers around the world priced at £375.00, followed by recognised global toy retailers. Santa didn’t come to me…

every child deserves a family

I

n England over 4,000 children are waiting for loving adoptive parents. They are a range of ages, from a variety of backgrounds. What they have in common is a difficult start in life and that they can no longer be brought up by their birth families. All these children need a loving, stable home. They need parents who will stick by them through the good times and the bad. They need support and love to help them overcome their troubled backgrounds, make sense of who they are and grow up to be safe and secure. Adoption is a way of providing a permanent family for children. Parenting adopted children, whilst presenting unique challenges, can be extremely rewarding. If you are able to offer love, commitment, time, patience and the motivation to want to understand how your child sees the world, then that is a great start and the rewards will be limitless. It may be that you have a wish to be a parent but fertility issues mean that you cannot have a birth child. Or you may already have a family but feel you still have space for another child. Or you may be single and feel that you have masses of love, security and happiness to offer to a child who has not had a great start in life and/or has ongoing challenges. Or you may have adopted and are thinking of adopting again. Whether you are married or single, divorced or living with a partner, gay or straight, unemployed

76 DECEMBER 2016/JANUARY 2017

or disabled, and whatever your cultural background adoption may be for you.

What does it take to be an adoptive parent?

Adoptive parents need the same qualities as any other parent. Adoption offers children the love, stability and security of family life they may not have experienced before. Have confidence that you have what it takes! You will need to give your adopted child(ren) lots of individual time, understanding and support. Children who experience unmet physical and emotional needs early in life can have their later development adversely affected, perhaps requiring different parenting techniques to a birth child. That may sound daunting but there is plenty of support available, via your agency and voluntary support agencies. On a practical level, you will need to be able to support a child financially, though you don’t have to be a millionaire or even be a homeowner. You can apply for tax credits to supplement your income when you adopt, and other financial help may

also be available in the form of one-off or regular payments. When you first adopt, one partner will be expected to take time off work for between six and twelve months to help the child settle in. Your child will also need your ongoing support to help them understand about their birth family and why they were adopted. You will need to be able to help discuss their history with them in a respectful way and highlight the positives in their past. Where it is in their best interests there may be ongoing contact with the child’s birth family. This can involve anything from occasional meetings with birth family members or ‘letterbox’ contact once or twice a year. As an adoptive parent, you will need to support your child with whatever arrangements are agreed for contact with their birth family. Adoption is a lifelong commitment requiring skill, empathy, energy, patience – and a sense of humour! But there can be no greater reward than transforming a child’s life forever and building a happy, fulfilled family. Adoption transforms the lives of some of the most vulnerable children in society.

Guide To Etiquette For Children

F

or once the despairing pundits, pollsters and commentators are in agreement: children’s manners are getting worse. Table manners are a thing of the past, respect for elders is out of the window, and so on. Yet many parents riposte that it is no longer a question of manners, it’s a question of natural behaviour. Their little darling may like to be louder than the town crier, may want to crawl round other people’s feet in a restaurant, may need to have their parent’s instant attention for their own important demands - but they’re just children, and who are we to say that these natural impulses should be cramped within our own narrow view of manners?

a go on the swing etc. Again, repetition is valuable. • Remind them of their ps and qs. This effectively means endlessly reiterations of “say please”, “say thank you”… • Teach your children not to interrupt when you’re speaking. Again, repeated reminders work best. • Teach your child to listen carefully. This might entail them getting rewards for sitting still and listening attentively. Listening well is an incredibly important social skill, which will prove invaluable when it comes to making conversations.

Why not try and find a compromise between old-school stiffness and laissez-faire carelessness? Follow these basic precepts: • Teach your child empathy from an early age. Keep reiterating remarks like “how would you feel if someone said that to you?”, and you’ll get your child into the habit of thinking about the impact their behaviour has on others. • Emphasise the importance of sharing. This doesn’t come naturally, so you have to actually tell children to offer sweets around, give other kids

Table Manners

78 DECEMBER 2016/JANUARY 2017

Table manners are by no means natural. Eventually you will have to teach children to wield and knife and fork correctly, not slurp from a glass, and may even introduce them to the arcane mysteries of correct cutlery usage, tipping soup bowls way from you etc. Don’t get bogged down in these minutiae. Concentrate instead on the absolute essentials. And always bear in mind that if you get too uptight about manners, you will turn family mealtimes into an absolute purgatory that is dreaded by children

and adults alike. Repeated lectures about nagging remarks about shortcomings do not make for a convivial atmosphere. Absolutely Essential Table Manners • Wait until everyone has started before you do; if you are specifically invited to start immediately, it is acceptable to do so. • Always eat with your mouth closed. • Always use cutlery (fingers are for bread, fruit and barbecues) • Never reach across the table and help yourself to food; always ask for food to be passed to you (a please won’t go amiss). • Eat as much as you can, then put your knife and fork together on the plate to indicate you have finished. • Ask permission to leave the table, or wait until there is a general move to do so Debrett’s Cygnets, classes teaching dining etiquette for children from the age of 7.
