“M

ummy, oh mummy, look at those beautiful horses and that carriage. She’s dressed like a princess isn’t she, so sparkly, so lovely. Do you think she is a real princess? I wish I was a princess, even if I could be for just a little while.” “Some time ago, on a glorious summer’s day my three-year-old daughter and I were walking through the streets of the town where we lived in Brazil, when the clip-clopping noise of hooves clattering down the street made us turn. A majestic horse and carriage rolled to a stop opposite us, and from it stepped down a little girl, who couldn’t have been more than five, in a shimmering dress fit for a princess. The scene was every bit the fairy tale that is sounds like as I write about it now, but the sight of that little girl left just as much of an impression on me that day as it did my daughter and what mother wouldn’t want for their daughter’s wish to be a princess to come true,” said Lady Jacqueline Von Rutenberg, CEO/Founder of Lady V. Couture.

That was the moment Lady V Couture came into being. I set out to create a children’s clothing brand that focused on combining fairy tale with couture, quality with style, and craftsmanship with care, a touch of magic in an all too practical world where children grow up far too fast and should be encouraged to imagine, to aspire, and to dream just that little bit more. Today Lady V Couture works with some of London’s best designers and seamstresses to create the finest gowns for little princesses-in-waiting from across the globe, shimmering dramatic dresses, entirely handmade in London from the finest materials and the 1 0 O C TO B E R / N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 7

greatest of skill and artistry. We are a family business – with my husband helping to steer our ship, and my daughter’s fashion sense and preferences incorporated into many of our gowns – and our incredibly talented professional team who ensure that each dress is as wondrously magical as the last. The Lady V Couture range consists of fourteen handcrafted couture gowns, each unique with their own story, each taking at least six seamstresses over two months to create in our London studio, and each with the capacity to make any little girl feel like the princess they truly are, no matter the occasion.

Once Upon A Time… Beautiful Haute Couture Gowns Designed Exclusively for Little Princesses. Lady V Couture is an exclusive fashion boutique for princesses-in-waiting who dream of carriages and kingdoms, heroic princes and happy endings. Every gown has been designed with a different princess in mind, hand-made from the finest fabrics and crystals in London by our exceptional seamstresses and finished to a luxury haute couture standard of craftsmanship to ensure that our little princess will feel every bit the princess they dream of being in their elegant new gown. www.ladyvcouture.com

here can you meet a robotic rhino, a squid with 18-foot tentacles and a huge housefly with a vacuum cleaner for a mouth? The Robot Zoo is home to all these and more at the Horniman Museum & Gardens. The Robot Zoo houses larger-than-life-size robot animals made from familiar machine parts and gadgets, in an exciting hands-on family exhibition revealing some of nature’s most amazing adaptations. Through interactive games and challenges, The Robot Zoo reveals how a chameleon changes colour, what makes grasshoppers leap so high, and exactly why a platypus looks so strange. Using pistons for muscles, pipes instead of intestines, and computerised ‘brains’, the robot animals show how their real life counterparts see, hear, hunt, hide and move. And through other interactive exhibits visitors can try their hand at squid racing, fire a chameleon’s ‘tongue-gun’ and even design their own ‘mutant’ robot creature. Dr Emma-Louise Nicholls, Deputy Keeper of Natural History at the Horniman says: ‘Animals are amazing, and these robots really show us how. The everyday parts used – tubes, hinges and even a fly-swatter – form innovative representations of the amazing tools and abilities that have evolved in nature to allow animals to survive in a wide variety of environments and habitats. From a housefly’s lightning reactions to a bat’s ability to locate prey in the dark, this exhibition demonstrates just how extraordinary the animals that share our world really are.’ The Robot Zoo is open until Sunday 29th October 2017.

A CREATIVE SOLUTION TO LONG CAR JOURNEYS Hertz hope their new Colouring-in Car will keep kids entertained

C

ries of “Are we nearly there yet?” are all too common from the back seat on family driving holidays. But Hertz, the car hire company, believes it has found a way to keep bored kids entertained - and it doesn’t involve an iPad, computer game or anything requiring a battery. Instead, they’ve harnessed the power of oldfashioned ‘colouring in’ - but on a much bigger scale. In place of sketchbooks and notepads, the canvas is the car itself. The company has upholstered a prototype car in vinyl, with everything from the seats to the ceiling covered in outlines of images begging to be filled with colour. Afterwards, art works can be wiped away for the next family to use. The invitation to scribble on something that’s normally prohibited is surely too great a temptation for most kids to resist?

1 6 O C TO B E R / N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 7

The Colouring-in Car is now available at the Hertz Heathrow branch for a trial period. If the design proves successful, the company plans to release more cars. And given the trend for therapeutic adult colouring-in books, perhaps it won’t only be the back seat passengers who are entertained.

Confidence in the water S

wimFin, the only swimming aid of its kind, inspires imagination and play. When a child puts on a SwimFin, they immediately become more active, playing, building confidence, learning, experimenting and having FUN! SwimFin plays a psychological part in learning to swim, even before a lesson has started. Kids love the feeling of safety and security SwimFin gives them, while it motivates and encourages imagination and play. SwimFin is a teaching aid, flotation device and fun water toy all in one. It should be worn high on the back, above the centre of gravity. This way it will ‘suspend’ the child in the water – it will not tip a child forward if worn

correctly, as can be seen in the photos. A SwimFin should never be used with a baby that cannot control their body yet, and it must NEVER be worn on the front of the body. The most important thing about SwimFin is this: the more submerged it is, the more support it is giving. This means when the child is vertical, doggy paddling through the water, SwimFin will be almost completely submerged, giving maximum support. As the child’s body position becomes more horizontal, SwimFin comes out of the water giving less support. This means the child is swimming more for themselves with less and less assistance. And SwimFin never has to be inflated, deflated, or need to have additional support added or removed as with armbands/discs, body vests etc. Remember, the more visible it is, the less it’s working! SwimFin has passed both EN71 Toy Safety and EN13138 Buoyancy Aid International Safety Standards. Pop over to SwimFin to purchase your favourite colour today: www.swimfin.co.uk

Taking young children skiing - fabulous or folly?

A

snowy trip to the Alps is an appealing prospect, but with young children in the mix can it really work? Family skiing specialist Ski Famille helps us look at some of the most common queries asked by families considering their first family skiing holiday. Q: What age can children start ski school? A: Four is a common age for starting ski school, but children can start at three in most resorts. Ski Famille offers their own tailored ski lessons for three-year olds in picturesque Les Gets. Shorter in length and with small groups, these sessions are fantastic for the youngest skiers. Q: How do I know if my children are ready for ski school? A: This is a difficult one, every child is different! If your child is confident, coordinated and has experience of listening to instruction from someone other than Mum or Dad they should be fine. The mountains are an unfamiliar environment though, so choose an English-speaking ski school to ensure those first few days are as stress-free as possible. Q: How about under 3’s? A: If your child is too young for ski-school (or old enough on paper but you don’t feel they are ready) they can still have a fantastic time in the mountains. Ice skating, sledding, and snowman building are all fun activities that will help to familiarise your children with the Alpine environment. Q: Should I worry about the altitude? A: Whilst altitude in Europe is generally not something to worry about, for children under 12 months old do check with your GP before travelling to higher resorts. It’s also important remember that the higher the altitude, the closer to the sun’s rays 2 0 O C TO B E R / N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 7

you are; apply sunscreen to children regularly and keep the whole family hydrated. Q: What else do ski resorts have to offer? A: There is a lot more to a family ski holiday than the skiing. Resorts have a fantastic selection of activities that will keep even the youngest children entertained. From ice-rinks to indoor soft play, swimming pools and toboggan runs, the mountains make for a great family holiday. A hot chocolate or ice cream in the sun goes down well whatever the season! Q: How do I go about packing everything I need for my young children? A: You’ll struggle to ‘pack light’ for a family ski holiday. There are ways to make things easier though, check what is already provided in your accommodation to avoid packing unnecessary items. Ski Famille provides sterilisers, bed guards, high chairs and travel cots, along with plenty of toys and games in all their chalets. They also provide complimentary nappies and wipes - so parents with infants can strike those off the packing list!

Ski Famille chalet packages are available from £579 per adult for 7 nights including flights, transfers and half board accommodation. Child discounts are available throughout the season with free child places on a number of dates. Ski Famille’s À La Carte Childcare is available in all properties for children aged 3 - 12.

Travel In Style

O

ur product was inspired by the challenges faced when flying long haul with young children and the difficulties encountered when trying to get them comfortable in aircraft seats designed for adults. After Patenting our homemade design, we had several prototypes professionally made and trialled them successfully on flights to various locations between the States, Australia and the UK. With great feedback we then eventually found a UK manufacturer able to produce the TravelSnugs within a 5 day lead time to order. It was very important to us to find a UK manufacturer, not only because we wanted to support UK business

TravelSnug is a recently established UK company selling a totally unique, patented travel product, a specially shaped cushion that makes an aircraft seat child size.

but also to ensure a standard of work environment and pay conditions for the people making TravelSnugs. We launched our TravelSnugs in April 2015 at the Baby & Toddler Show in Esher Surrey and in September 2015 we were featured as a must have travel product in a feature in Qatar Airlines In flight magazine. Since we started trading we have sold TravelSnugs all over the world mostly by recommendation and also our Twitter reviewers and adverts in Baby London and Little London publications (The Chelsea Magazine Company Ltd ) and also Yummy Mummy magazines, (Fish Media Group). Our TravelSnugs come in a range of attractive soft fleece fabrics. They are light weight, compact, fully washable and can be tumble dried. Designed for children to carry or to be carried over a suitcase handle or pushchair handle, our patented side loops interface with the aircraft lap belt so that the TravelSnug cocoons the child giving head and neck support and raising them within the seat helping them to get and stay comfortable awake or asleep. Available in two sizes, size one to fit ages approximately 9 months – 3 ½ years and size two from 3 ½ years to approximately 7yrs old we have two variations, the standard TravelSnug and the TravelSnug modified to work with an approved harness (CARES

harness) which some parents chose to use. Both sizes and variants are available in all fleece fabrics. Each TravelSnug is sold with a matching fleece blanket and both are rolled within a handy carry strap so that the TravelSnug is not likely to be counted in the child’s hand luggage allowance. www.travelsnug.co.uk

HERE COMES THE RAIN

Serious about upcycling? You can now buy brilliant waterproof kids’ clothing made from plastic bottles

uddy Puddles is transforming drinks containers into funky rain jackets. We’ve all heard about objects being recycled and made into vaguely useful stuff, but kids’ outerwear company Muddy Puddles have now started selling waterproof clothing made from old plastic bottles. So, instead of slinging a whopping 80 clear plastic bottles into landfill, they can now be made into one beautiful EcoSplash raincoat. Not only does this save on waste, but it also reduces water usage by 20%, saves energy use by 50% and reduces air pollution by 60%, compared to normal production processes. Apparently they’re more durable and have a higher technical performance than a non-recycled equivalent, and importantly, look very cute on kids. For more information, visit muddypuddles.com.

weT WEATHER FUN

Who says you can’t play outside when it’s wet? WORDS: Kate Whiting

A

s we head into autumn, rainy days will become evermore present. But that doesn’t mean staying indoors and feeling glum. Primary school teacher and forest school leader Katie Akers, and speech and language therapist Steph Scott, have penned the Rainy Days Kids Adventure Book to help kids embrace all kinds of inclement weather. They write: “Shout ‘Yippee!’ put on your mac, pull on your wellies and run outside. A marvellous, multi-sensory adventure playground awaits you.”

3. For the tail, cut a three arms length of wool and wind it round and round in a loop about a hand’slength long, or longer if you want a swishy tail. There will be loops at both ends. 4. Cut another one arm length of wool and thread it through the loops at one end. Tie a double knot to secure it and leave two long ends. Then cut trough all the loops at the other end to make a bushy tail. 5. Wrap the long ends a few times around your pony and tie on the tail with another double knot. 6. Cut a piece of string about one arm in length. 7. Tie a fish-on-a-dish knot (clove hitch) just behind your pony’s eyes to make its bridle. 8. Perhaps try out your pony’s showjumping skills with a few spectacular splash fences. Giddy up!

Puddle Pony A puddle pony is a chunky stick with personality! It’s the very best companion on a puddly day. You will need • 1 chunky stick • Garden wire • 2 beads • Wool • Scissors • String How to make it 1. To make the eyes, cut a piece of garden wire about two grown-up hands long. Thread two beads to the middle and fix them in place with a pinch and twist of the wire. 2. Wrap the wire around one end of your stick. This is your pony’s head. Secure the wire to the stick with a tight pinch and twist.

Water Run With a water run you can collect your own rainwater, catch the drops and watch as they make a stream. Where will they go next? You will need • 2 sticks, both half an arm’s length • A bunch of thick leaves of different sizes • String • Scissors • Masking tape How to make it 1. Use a one arm length of string to tie one end of the sticks together. Pull the other ends apart to make a V shape. 2. Lay your leaves in a line on the ground, face down from biggest to smallest. Make sure each leaf overlaps the one before so there are no gaps. 3. Lay your V-shaped sticks on top of your leaves, with the tied end at the same end as your smallest leaf. 4. Use masking tape to attach your sticks to your leaves. 5. Turn it all over and then push the open sticks a little closer together. This will fold the leaves slightly to make a channel for your water to run down. 6. You can use your water run to fill up your fairy and elf pool. Put the tied end of the V into the pool. Prop up the other end with sticks so the water will flow in. You could even place a few water

runs around the pool to keep it as full as possible. Or perhaps you could put one underneath a drip coming from the roof of your house.

Troll House Down the stony path, past the leafy bushes and through the arching oak trees there’s a happy stream giggling along. It flows gently under a little bridge, and it is just here that a grumpy little troll lives. His house is made of mud and stone, his door and window are made of the finest sticks and he has a sycamore leaf roof covered with luscious moss. Collect together You will need • Stones • Leaves • Moss • 10 small sticks (each about a grown-up’s finger length) • 1 wooden bead • String • Scissors • Masking tape How to make it 1. To make the door, cut a piece of string of about two arms in length. 2. Tie a fish-on-a-dish knot (clove hitch) to the end of one of your sticks. 3. Line up five sticks next to each other to make the door. 4. Lash the sticks to each other at one end of your door, weaving your string under and over each stick in turn. 5. Tighten the string in between the sticks by winding the tail end of the string around each of the joints between the sticks. 6. Repeat steps 2-5 to lash together the other end of the door. 7. Thread the bead to a small length of string. Attach this to one of the sticks where the troll’s door handle should be. Tie a knot to secure. 8. To make the window, take three sticks and make a triangle shape, or take just one bendy stick and make a circle-shaped window. Fix them with tape. 9. Take two sticks and snap them into the right length to fit tight inside the window frame, and push them into place to make the windowpanes. 10. Prop up the door, and hook your window to a stone, a stick or a small branch, or just push it into the mud. Now your troll can keep a lookout for goats. How many Billy Goats Gruff go triptrapping over your bridge? ‘Too many!’ says the grumpy old troll! Extracted from Rainy Day Kids Adventure Book by Steph Scott and Katie Akers (£9.99, Batsford)

REMEMBER, REMEMBER THE FIFTH OF NOVEMBER!

Keep your children safe this Guy Fawkes night

B

onfire Night as it is also known, can be magical for little ones, so advanced preparation and safety measures will ensure the evening is memorable for all the right reasons: The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to go to a properly organised display. But if you are planning fireworks at home; have an appropriately stocked first aid kit, a bucket of sand and plenty of water, a fire blanket and a bottle of sterile saline to irrigate eyes. Check the fireworks conform to British Standards and you have sufficient space to ignite them safely. However careful you are, injuries may occur so here are a few first aid tips you may need…

Sparklers Sparklers are fun, but burn fiercely and are not suitable for children under the age of five. Sparklers get six times as hot as a pan of cooking oil. Always

supervise children and ensure they wear gloves and maintain a distance from others. Have a bucket of sand to put used sparklers into and no one picks them up until they are completely cooled.

Minor burns Hold the affected area under cold, running water for at least 10 minutes. Cool the burn, but keep the person warm. If a child is burnt and a blistered area larger than a 50p piece, phone for an ambulance.

If clothing is on fire Prevent the casualty from panicking or running – any movement or breeze will fan the flames. Drop the casualty to the ground and wrap them in a blanket, coat, or rug made from inflammable fabric. Roll the casualty on the ground until the flames have been smothered.

Severe burns Start treating the burn immediately under cool running water for at least 10 minutes, until an ambulance arrives. Use a shower if the burns are large. Make the casualty as comfortable as possible, ideally lie them down and elevate their legs, to reduce the risk of clinical shock. Whilst cooling, remove loose clothing and jewellery from the affected area. If you are unsure of what to do in a medical emergency, enrol on a first aid course that will teach you how to deal with any injuries effectively and in the calmest way possible.

Guy Fawkes Facts • The Houses of Parliament are still searched by the Yeomen of the Guard before the state opening, which has been held in November since 1928. The idea is to ensure no modern-day Guy Fawkes is hiding in the cellars with a bomb, although it is more ceremonial than serious. And they do it with lanterns. • The cellar that Fawkes tried to blow up no longer exists, in 1834 it was destroyed in a fire. • Straw dummies representing Fawkes have been tossed on the bonfire since as long ago as the 13th century, initially to drive away evil spirits. Following the Gunpowder Plot, the focus of the sacrifices switched to Guy Fawkes’ treason. • Today the word ‘guy’ is a synonym for ‘a man’ but originally it was a term for an “repulsive, ugly person” in reference to Fawkes. • The fireworks represent the explosives that were never used by the plotters. • The only place in the UK that does not celebrate Guy Fawkes Night is his former school St. Peter’s in York. They refuse to burn a guy out of respect for one of their own.

Calling All Little Scientists! L

ittle House Of Science offers weekly science classes and holiday workshops in London for children aged 3-11 years of age. We also offer baby and toddler classes (Little Discovery and Little Maths for our very young budding scientists). At Little House of Science we nurture a child’s natural curiosity and re-enforce STEM-related subjects in an exciting, practical and fun way so that the children can connect with science from a very early age. The weekly workshops introduce children to a new scientific concept or idea in a simplified and age-adjusted way via an exciting mix of interactive discussions, practical demonstrations and hands-on experiments. Children are encouraged to ask questions, perform investigations, get familiar with the “scientific” vocabulary and ultimately learn to apply problem solving skills. These “hands-on” and “brains-on” workshops are full to the brim with exciting activities that really will help foster the spark for the next generation of mathematicians and scientists. We communicate to the children how important a role the various aspects of STEM play in our life quality, and what it can do for us all. This helps them connect to the wonderful world of science, no matter what their interests are.

Our diverse syllabus includes age-adjusted topics from Life, Earth and Physical Life Science, as well as Engineering and Robotics. Please come and join the thousands of children

who we teach each year! If you would also like us to run a club, or science worksops at your child’s school, do recommend us! www.littlehouseofscience.com

Taking children shopping can boost early development… especially at Christmas!

E

very woman loves to shop, but having children can hold you back from strolling round the boutiques and department stores of London looking for that next luxury item. Reminiscing of the days when you were free to spend bundles of cash followed by ‘ladies who lunch’ with your friends. Taking the kids shopping can conjure up nightmare thoughts of boredom, temper tantrums, and ‘can I have this Mum?’ over and over again.

3 2 O C TO B E R / N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 7

But have no fear, you can turn this around to your advantage… A new study by academics from Oxford and The Open University has found that shopping actually boosts infants’ happiness levels and the development of everyday skills. Researchers said there was evidence of a “positive” link between shopping and the physical skills that children need to master in the early years. The disclosure was made as part of a large-

scale analysis of parental activities and the impact they have on children. The study found that more passive activities such as watching television and looking through picture books had “no discernible benefits”. Children are getting visual stimulation, they’re getting out of the house and into a new environment, they’re bumping into other families where social skills come into play and they may get the chance to do something physical in a

shop like run around. There does seem to be a connection between the kinds of activities that are taking place and the skills that are being developed. But this doesn’t just happen by magic, even at Christmas… The key is to engage them when you are shopping, not dragging them behind you. In between you indulging in a fashion shopping frenzy, include some visits to stores that will capture their imagination and excite them. Hamley’s is top of the list with Winter Wonderland, Hyde Park - together with department stores that offer exciting window displays, kids workshops and activities. And as we approach the festive season, there are a huge amount of family activities that can encompass your shopping trip - like ice skating – Somerset House, Natural History Museum and Westfield will all have ice rinks open from November. Taking them to see Santa at one of the many department store Grotto’s will go down very well – Harrods, Selfridges and Hamley’s to name but a few, although you will need to book these in advance. Giving your children some time to enjoy themselves will make them just a little more patient when you want to splash the cash on yourself. Besides taking the kids Christmas shopping gives you a great chance to listen and observe them, compiling their ‘Christmas Wish List’ without them realising! So next time you have the perfect excuse to go shopping with your friends, and purchase your little ones Christmas presents – in between the boutiques, hair salon and spa of course! PREGNANT? TIPS FOR MASTERING MATERNITY FASHION H words: Katie Wright

ow do you navigate nine months of constant body changes in style? The Duchess of Cambridge never looked anything less than polished and chic. Beyonce made it look easy - even while expecting twins. For celebrities, pregnancy fashion seems like a doddle, but if you haven’t got a stylist and ‘glam squad’ to hand, it can be pretty daunting. How can you style your bump without spending a fortune? Where can you find the best maternitywear on the high street? Is it possible to stay trendy in your third trimester? Shopping - and getting dressed - is a whole lot more complicated when your body is changing so rapidly. So we asked the founders of two of the UK’s best-loved maternity clothing brands for their top tips for navigating the next nine months in style. Here’s what they had to say...

Dorothy Perkins Maternity Black Overbump Jeans, £34, available from dorothyperkins.com

Mango Maternity High Waist Jeans, £29.99, available from shop.mango.com

Get the basics right “Every stylish outfit begins with well-fitting underwear. Your breasts are going through a lot of changes and the right maternity bra is essential for comfort and confidence,” advises Laura Tenison, founder and MD of JoJo Maman Bebe. “A pair of black maternity leggings are really useful too, especially when being comfortable is your highest priority.”

“The key pieces that I recommend buying are a good pair of maternity jeans and a selection of tank tops and t-shirts that can be layered” Invest in separates “The key pieces that I recommend buying are a good pair of maternity jeans and a selection of tank tops and t-shirts that can be layered,”says Baukjen de Swaan Arons, founder and creative director at Isabella Oliver. “Comfort is key, so look for fabrics, such as jersey, which offer some stretch.”

Repurpose your regular wardrobe in the first trimester “Most items in your wardrobe will generally still 4 4 O C TO B E R / N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 7

fit during the first few months of pregnancy,” says Baukjen. “Oversized shirts, empire line dresses and long line tops prove useful during this time, as they can be worn during and postpregnancy too.”

A little black dress goes a long way “A simple black dress can form the foundation of countless looks with the help of a few accessories,” Laura recommends.

Tap into seasonal trends with print and colour “When incorporating seasonal trends into a maternity wardrobe, consider how these trends will work with a growing bump,” Baukjen suggests. “Think about print and colour. Bolder and brighter colours or prints work better when worn on the bottom half, as this will balance out a growing bump and draw attention to the legs.”

Isabella Oliver Harris Maternity Cardigan, £89, Nia Maternity Off the Shoulder Top, £69, and The Maternity Treggings, £65, all available from isabellaoliver.com

Midi dresses are great for the office

Seraphine Navy Dot Woven Maternity Dress, £59, available from jojomamanbebe.co.uk

“We’re loving the midi dress at the moment,” Laura says. “It’s chic, universally flattering and shows off just the right amount of skin for the office without leaving you feeling frumpy.”

Stay true to your personal style “Stick to styles that you are used to wearing. If you’re a T-shirt and skinny jeans person, stick to that,” Laura advises. “Likewise, if you like your fitted dresses, you’ll only feel dowdy if you opt for a flowing style. You’re going through so many changes as it is, keeping to your usual style will help you feel a bit more like yourself.” O C TO B E R / N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 7 4 5

Daring to dream Izzy Judd talks to Gabrielle Fagan with total honesty about dealing with fertility problems.

O

nly a few weeks away from the birth of her second baby, Izzy Judd, just like any expectant mother, is excitedly making preparations for the new arrival. But her journey to motherhood has been more tortured than most, and she reveals she nearly “lost herself ” in the process. “It feels like a miracle that I’m having a second baby when for so long I feared I’d never have a child at all. This time I’ve fallen pregnant naturally, which was beyond my wildest dreams,” says Izzy, who’s married to McFly drummer and Strictly Come Dancing champion Harry Judd. Their baby will be born in September, and the couple have a daughter, Lola, 19 months, born after IVF treatment.

4 6 O C TO B E R / N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 7

Trying to conceive became an “obsession” The 33-year-old has bravely laid bare her three-year struggle for a family in her book, Dare To Dream, in a bid to help other would-be parents. “I desperately wanted to be a mother. I became obsessed with conceiving and every failure made me more obsessed. I wondered if somehow I was less of a woman if I couldn’t get pregnant. I ended up questioning my whole identity and almost losing myself,” she admits. “Sometimes you get so lost [in it], you forget what you do have and how lucky you are. Panic sets in. I worried at one point it would affect our relationship - you can end up having sex, not because you want to, but because you need to because now is ‘the time’ you might conceive.

“It feels like a miracle that I’m having a second baby when for so long I feared I’d never have a child at all”

Suddenly, there’s no fun, no joy, no flirting or romance left - instead it just becomes routine.” Having husband Harry’s support was crucial throughout IVF and pregnancy The couple’s love for each other has kept them strong throughout, and she and Harry (“My amazing soulmate and best friend”) have managed to weather painful times and “dark days”. They met in 2005 when Izzy played violin in the backing orchestra on McFly’s Wonderland tour. She later found her own fame playing with electronic string quartet, Escala, who reached the final of Britain’s Got Talent in 2008. To the outside world, it seemed they were a golden celebrity couple who had everything, but 18 months after their marriage, and despite six hormone therapy treatments, Izzy still hadn’t conceived. According to the NHS, it’s estimated that one in seven couples in the UK have difficulty conceiving. Izzy was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, which can be a factor, and although her first IVF treatment worked, she was devastated when she suffered a miscarriage at just over six weeks in 2014. Family sadness, anxiety and miscarriage made getting pregnant even tougher Izzy believes a heartbreaking family event when she was 13 impacted on her chances of getting pregnant naturally. Her eldest brother, Rupert suffered brain damage in a car accident when he was 18 and the trauma left her with deep-seated anxiety, which she still battles. “Rupert’s accident brought our family huge sadness, which has never gone away. The theft of his life as it could have been - he was a very talented musician - has always been very hard,” she says quietly. “The accident triggered a huge surge of anxiety in me and I became an adult very suddenly, but with no emotional maturity to deal with that. Over the years, my anxiety led to my being unable to relax because I felt I wouldn’t be in control and something bad might happen. “When it comes to fertility, if you’re constantly in an anxious state, or in that heightened fight-or-flight mode, your body won’t do what it needs to do to produce.”

The joy of having Lola has eased some of the pain She will never forget the moment she and Harry went for their second round of IVF treatment, which resulted in Lola: “You’re in this quite sterile environment and they show you on the screen the embryo being released, which is actually very emotional and magical, and a beautiful side to IVF many people don’t know about. “I’m not sure I’ll ever find peace with losing our first baby, but I believe its spirit lives on in Lola. She’s wonderful. Harry’s besotted with her and is a brilliant dad. She kisses my stomach when we ask her where the baby is and we can’t wait to introduce her to her sibling. “I have learnt so much through what we’ve gone through - that you can’t control life, you must just trust it to unfold. You have to live it forwards and understand it backwards. Realising that has really helped calm my anxiety.” It’s a possibility, but there are no plans yet for more babies At the moment Izzy’s uncertain whether they will add to their family any further. “Growing up I was always [saying], ‘I want a big family’, but then you never think you will have fertility problems,” she says. “We still have one embryo in the freezer, which I like to think is there with its little hat on keeping cosy. I’m not sure how I would feel not going back to give that little life a chance, especially looking at Lola and seeing who she is. “Even though it’s been very hard to become a mum, I wouldn’t change a thing because when I think back to the moment Lola was born, I know I would have waited forever for her. “Now I’m so lucky to be expecting this second baby and just want to take each day as it comes, to live in the present, and appreciate every moment of what we have as a family. I know how precious it is.”

THE BOOK Dare To Dream - My Struggle To Become A Mum - A Story Of Heartache And Hope by Izzy Judd is published by Bantam Press, priced £14.99.

What you need to know about chicken pox W

Dr Rai from The London General Practice, discusses the symptoms and treatment of chickenpox.

ith summer comes the emergence of viruses such as Chickenpox, a highly contagious infection caused by the Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV). Predominantly affecting children under 12, it can affect anyone at any age if they have not previously had the infection or the vaccination. It is usually a mild illness and clears up in a week or so, but can be dangerous for some people, such as pregnant women, new-born babies and those with a weakened immune system. Whilst there is a chickenpox vaccine it is not part of the routine childhood vaccination schedule.

TRANSMISSION Around 90% of people who come into contact with an affected person will develop the condition. Transmission is through direct person to person contact, airborne droplet infection, or even through contact with infected clothing or bedding.

INCUBATION PERIOD The incubation period is around 14-21 days. The most infectious period being 1-2 days before the rash appears, but infectivity continues until all the lesions are dry and have crusted over, usually about 5 days after the onset of the rash.

SYMPTOMS Symptoms normally start with fever and a general feeling of malaise. Then a intensely itchy rash 5 0 O C TO B E R / N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 7

develops. The chickenpox lesions usually start on the body or face, later spreading to the limbs and scalp. It typically begins with small red spots which quickly develop into a blisters which scab over in a few days.

TREATMENT Paracetamol can be used to help alleviate symptoms such as fever and pain. Ibuprofen or other antiinflammatories should not be used in children or adults with chickenpox. Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration, wear loose comfortable cotton clothing and keep nails short to avoid scratching. Calamine lotion can help relieve the itching as well as Piriton which is an antihistamine and licensed for the symptomatic relief of itching from chickenpox for children over the age of one.

WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE It is important to contact your doctor if you are not sure of the diagnosis, if your baby is less than four weeks old, if you develop chickenpox as an adult or if the symptoms haven’t started to improve after six days. Also if you have been in contact with someone who has chickenpox (or you have symptoms) and you’re pregnant or have a weakened immune system. Also seek medical advice and see your GP if you or your child have signs of chickenpox complications, such as swollen and painful skin, difficulty breathing or dehydration.

REBECCA ADLINGTON: “I WANT TO BE a good role model”

After resuming her position on the BBC commentators’ couch for the Swimming World Championships, Rebecca Adlington braved the heat of the Celebrity MasterChef kitchen. She tells Abi Jackson how becoming a mum has stirred up her approach to food and cooking

“I used to have a plan, but not so much now I have Summer. I want as much time with her as possible” “It’s mainly meat and vegetables she won’t eat; certain textures she refuses to even try. She’s started liking eggs lately, which I was glad about. She does like fruit, yoghurts etc, and she loves pesto pasta!” Having been open about her own body-image struggles in the past, and experienced the devastating impact of being trolled on social media over her appearance, encouraging healthy habits and a strong sense of self-confidence in her daughter is really important to Adlington - and she knows this starts with her own attitude and behaviours. “I definitely want to be a good role model to Summer. Everything I do, I think of how it affects her,” explains the former athlete, who split from husband Harry Needs last year, though they remain on good terms. “That’s 5 4 O C TO B E R / N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 7

“I

’m a home cook. I’m a pub sort of girl, rather than Michelin-Star restaurant,” says Adlington, who’s also keeping busy with ambassador duties for pelvic floor health experts Innovo. “As an athlete, you cook quick, healthy meals. Now I cook meals that me and Summer can both eat, normal everyday food. I try to have a balanced diet, but I often go for quicker meals just for convenience and ease. “I learnt so much filming [MasterChef] though, and had such an amazing experience.” Becoming a mum to Summer, who turned two in June, has affected her approach to eating, she acknowledges. “Summer is quite fussy with her food, so it’s been a challenge. She’s just not into food like I am, or other kids. I have started cooking a bit more with her now she’s two, so I’m hoping that will help and get her to experience other foods.

why I want to lead a healthy lifestyle with food and exercise. I often work-out with her, which is fun.” Being a working mum also fits her vision of being a good role model. While filming in Rio last August, Adlington was honest about how hard it was being away from her baby. A few days before she was due to fly home, she posted a video on Instagram showing Summer watching her mum on TV, which Adlington captioned with #missyou and #crying. While the separation’s a struggle, her career is important, and she hopes she’s setting a good example for her girl: “I want her to see me going to work and understanding about working hard too.” That said, there is no ‘grand plan’. “I used to have a plan, but not so much now I have Summer. I want as much time with her as possible, and I’ve definitely learnt over the past few years that whatever I do plan, it never ends up like you expected! “I’m definitely in the middle of finding my feet again. I love being able to do different things, it makes it so interesting and fun. “I would love to get into more sports presenting, but it takes time, patience and hard work, so I’m going to continue what I’m doing and hopefully it will pay off.” And whatever happens, she’ll be setting aside time for switching off and having fun with her daughter. “Me and Summer went to Spain in May, which was lovely. She loves the beach and playing in the sand,” says Adlington. “I’m hoping to go away with her for a few days too, once I’m back from Budapest covering the World Swimming Championships.”

“I SUFFERED WITH BLADDER WEAKNESS AFTER GIVING BIRTH” Even Olympic athletes can find pregnancy a tough challenge. She may have two Olympic gold medals under her belt, but that doesn’t mean Rebecca Adlington was immune to the physical challenges and changes pregnancy can bring. WORDS: Abi Jackson

“A

s many women do, I suffered from a bit of bladder weakness after giving birth to Summer,” says the 28-year-old. “So I know all too well the impact pregnancy and childbirth can have on your body, even as an athlete.” Of course, with a background as a pro athlete (this is a woman who “fell in love with swimming” aged 3, and went on to scoop gold in the 2011 World Championships, as well as medals at the Beijing and London Olympics in 2008 and 2012), Rebecca recognises she was “possibly more prepared than many women” in this regard. “As an athlete, you know you need to keep your pelvic floor strong. Exercises and high-impact sport can put lots of pressure on the muscles, and track athletes in particular can suffer from leaks unless they exercise their pelvic floor. It’s something I’ve always been fairly aware of – although, as most women would probably admit, I didn’t do as many exercise as I should have during pregnancy or after I had Summer!” She’s talking about pelvic floor exercises, which can be key for preventing and managing bladder weakness, whether that’s stress incontinence (leaking when running, jumping or laughing, for instance), or urge incontinence (trouble holding it in when you need to pee). Around one in three women in the UK experience bladder weakness at some point, and while pregnancy’s not the only cause, it is a known risk factor. When she started experiencing the issue herself, after Summer was born in 2015, Rebecca says talking to friends and personal trainers for advice really helped, and she’s passionate about spreading the message to other women that “solutions are out there”. “As a new mum, you already have a huge amount to deal with,” she says, acknowledging that having to worry about leaks can “impact your confidence”. INNOVO recently surveyed 2,000 women, and found 37% said they felt forced to change holiday plans due to embarrassment and anxiety around bladder weakness, and 36% said they avoid activities like swimming because of the problem. This is something Rebecca hopes to help change. “I’m really passionate about encouraging people to be active – particularly women – which is why I’m also an ambassador for Women in Sport,” she says. It’s also why she was “keen” to take part in INNOVO’s recent incontinence awareness

“INNOVO recently surveyed 2,000 women, and found 37% said they felt forced to change holiday plans due to embarrassment and anxiety around bladder weakness, and 36% said they avoid activities like swimming because of the problem”

campaign, setting a new Guinness World Record for the most people on trampolines (they succeeded, with 343 people simultaneously bouncing for five minutes non-stop). Rebecca retired from competitive swimming in 2013, but, reflecting on the changes she’s experienced since becoming a mum, says: “Swimming and fitness are a big part of my life. I work out three to four times a week and one of those is a swim. “I want to live a healthy lifestyle so I am able to do the things I want to do, and be a good role model to my daughter. Swimming is more about time for me than exercise. I love being away from my phone and having an hour for me!” She didn’t put any pressure on herself to ‘snap back’ after having Summer, but keeping active’s still important – though her approach to fitness has evolved. “I found the changes that happened to my body during pregnancy the hardest to deal with, as it was out of my control. In the first few months as a mum, my body wasn’t something I really thought about, as my life had just completely changed,” she reflects. “Once I’d settled into things, I wanted to get my body back and be in better shape again. My body isn’t the same as pre-baby at all, but I have a gorgeous healthy daughter, so it’s totally worth it. “Now that Summer is in nursery two days a week, I’ve found it a bit easier to get back into exercise. I started with a personal trainer this year, so it’s kept the routine and schedule going too. I really enjoy doing a little 20-minute HIIT session when Summer is around as she tries to join in, and I want her to see her mum being healthy.” Rebecca and her husband Harry Needs split after 18 months of marriage, when Summer was 10 months old. They’ve kept on good terms, with Rebecca saying shortly after that their “total focus is on our daughter”. It’s a balancing act, of course, and Rebecca says she’s “in the middle of finding my feet again”. But she’s determined to make space for her own career, as well as prioritising quality downtime with her daughter. She credits her parents for their support. “My parents are just the best, so I’m very lucky I have them as examples, and to turn to if I need anything.” And whatever happens, swimming and her PT sessions will always be there as a way to keep grounded and hit refresh. “Getting your heart rate up is really good for you, and it’s so important to try and keep healthy as a new mum,” says Rebecca. “Group exercise can also really help you to socialise and not feel so isolated.” For more information about Innovo, visit www.restorethefloor.com. ASK THE EXPERT:

DOES SOLID FOOD HELP BABIES SLEEP BETTER?

I

n a word, no, according to infant nutrition specialist Dr Amy Brown, but a variety of solids are important for your baby’s development. Will solids help babies sleep through the night, and is it OK to give him or her shopbought baby food? Infant feeding expert Dr Amy Brown, an associate professor in the Department of Public Health at Swansea University and author of Why Starting Solids Matters (Pinter & Martin, £7.99), says: “The belief that solids will help your baby sleep through the night is common but unfortunately untrue. “When a baby starts eating solids they often take in less milk, meaning they may even eat less as many weaning foods contain less energy than milk does. “However, babies don’t just wake up at night because they’re hungry. They wake up because they’re thirsty, cold or unsettled. How many adults do you know that really sleep through the night? “As for giving him or her shop-bought baby food - the shop-bought versus home-made is a common conundrum. We want to cook home-made meals for our baby but we also lead busy lives. “It’s important to consider what works best for your family and budget, but to also give your baby variety, as exposure to lots of tastes and textures helps your baby learn to eat a wide range of foods. “Try to avoid giving only shop-bought food, as although it must meet minimum nutrient standards,

many varieties are very high in added sugar. “Often, recommended portion sizes on the jars are also too much, particularly for younger babies. Make sure you just feed your baby how much they want rather than encouraging them to finish the jar.”

AMAZING SPACEs FOR CHILDREN

Play with the decor to reflect their personalities and transform a bedroom into an adventure wonderland. words: Gabrielle Fagan

‘W

hy don’t you go and play in your room?’ It’s a common refrain among even the most devoted (but exasperated) parents, especially during long school holidays. But they won’t argue about such banishment - in fact, it might be hard to get them to emerge - if that room’s an exciting personalised space where the decor stimulates the imagination and they can explore

their creativity, and it’s a relaxing sanctuary.

Here are a few themes and styles to try in your child’s bedroom... Reach for the skies Let your child’s imagination soar with a spaceinspired room, and who knows - they might grow up to follow in the footsteps of British astronaut Tim Peake.“We’ve seen a huge increase in the amount of customers shopping for themed kid’s bedrooms over the past year or so,” says Nathalie Davis, director at Cuckooland. People realise this is a room their child will always remember and want it to be memorable and to reflect the taste they display in the rest of their home. Creating that ‘wow’ room, which they and their kids can boast about, is also down to the boom of social media and imagesharing platforms, such as Pinterest and Instagram, which are inspiring people to be more creative and push the boundaries when decorating their homes. Designing a kid’s bedroom is a great opportunity to let your inner child run wild! Parents are recognising

the benefits of consulting their children over the look of a room, seeing it as both a bonding experience and allowing children some control over their environment. We find this inevitably leads to some of the more colourful, exciting and unexpected purchases that make a space distinctive and unique.” Decor tip: Provide spaces for self-expression by painting a wall with blackboard paint, hanging up rolls of drawing paper, or making a large notice board by fixing cork tiles in a square to a wall and framing with simple painted wood strips.

the house to see if a small, unused space can be transformed. Kit out an understairs area with cushioned flooring, pillows and a curtain ‘door’. A built-in storage box can double as a window seat/ reading/hobby area on a landing.

Into the wild

On the move

Children love to ‘camp’ and create secret hideouts, and they can have that fun with furniture inspired by living in the great outdoors. “One of our most popular themes is the camping/woodland style room, most commonly using our teepee cabin bed, tent bed or a tree house bed as the focal point,” says Nathalie. “We think that’s because this theme is in keeping with the Scandi trend, as it embraces neutral tones and sleek contemporary design that so dominates interior design currently. It also incorporates fun and a sense of adventure and its attraction will endure because it’s classic and not age or gender specific. A plain, timeless backdrop - maybe a wall papered in faux brick or wood panelling and a stripped wooden floor - suits this look and would be practical and easy on the eye.” Decor tip: Think outside the (toy) box. If your child’s room is too small for play, look around

“Children’s bedrooms are the one area in the home where you can really indulge your imagination and theirs - so embrace the freedom,” urges Paula Taylor, stylist for wallpaper specialists Graham & Brown. “Your child’s personality and preferences will impact on what you choose but I’d urge caution about anchoring a room totally to a particular TV or film character. The danger is fashions and fads fade fast and your child might be on to the next big thing before the character duvet set has hit the wash. A few accessories linked to the desired theme may be enough and can be easily changed. Invest in full-size furniture and then all that will be necessary is a few easy updates every few years. With wallpaper, something generic, such as geometrics, stripes or stars, will be a versatile and a non-distracting backdrop for as many settings as your child can dream up. For a combined bedroom/playroom, bold bright accents work well or a strong paper, like our punchy Marvel Action comic heroes, for a feature wall.” Decor tip: Tap into your child’s hobbies for inspiration - whether that’s book characters, sporting heroes, animals or skateboarding - and reflect that passion in posters or murals. Companies such as Not On The High Street have a range of easy-to-apply wall stickers.

Monstrously cool and sustainable, made in Switzerland: L The stylish children’s clothes collection from the new label “jooseph’s”

ocally produced children’s clothes made from organic cotton pamper delicate baby’s skin and are a treat for the eyes of parents who indulge in designer clothes: this is what “Jooseph’s” delivers. Mums and dads with a sense for good design are all too familiar with the problem: many children’s clothes simply look awful. Lots of little pink kittens, waving teddy bears and annoying slogans. And anyway, who as a parent would stick their baby in a bodysuit that has been made at the other end of the world in dubious conditions from poor quality material? Jooseph’s now proves there is another way. This cheeky Swiss label is all about five adorable little monsters and has aunched its first collection in 2016. It includes bodysuits and T-shirts up to height 98, baby bonnets and soft and cuddly bath towels and bath ponchos. The founder and designer, herself the mother of a small daughter, gets to the heart of it: “Fairly produced children’s clothes in organic quality do not have to look like hand-knitted potato sacks. Sustainable fashion can also come with urban style, fun and designs suitable for children.” Jooseph’s captures the spirit of the times with its classy organic collection: finally a Swiss label for parents and grandparents who set store by sustainable production, unusual design and fashion. Raising healthy kids What should you avoid?

Healthy eating is about much more than tallying the numbers - the nutritional value of food is far more important. Barely a week goes by without children’s diets being mentioned in the media. WORDS: Abi Jackson

H

ealth officials are now calling for targets to be set to cut the calories in popular foods amid concerns children are consuming too much. Public Health England chief nutritionist Dr Alison Tedstone says: “We have a serious problem - one in three leave primary school either obese or overweight. If we want to tackle this we have to look at calories. There are a number of ways it can be done - we can reduce the size of the products or change the ingredients.” NHS figures suggest obesity rates among UK children are continuing to rise. Of course, it’s a big concern, but it can be an extremely confusing issue for parents. And as Chris Smith, senior lecturer in health and social care at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), points out, healthy eating is not just about calories. Here, he talks us through some key points... Should parents be monitoring kids’ calories? Official guidelines suggest school-age children need 1,600-2,500 calories a day. There are more specific guidelines for certain age ranges, however, and it also depends on their body weight and activity levels. As with adults, however, if you’re generally healthy, active and mindful of having a balanced diet, you shouldn’t need to obsess about calorie-counting. Chris notes: “Calories have become almost a catch-all measurement for the value of food, and

6 8 O C TO B E R / N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 7

on their own, they are not a useful guide for parents or their children. Calories are just a raw value of energy calculated following experiments in a lab, rather than inside the human body. It is far more important to focus on the nutritional value of the food we give our children.” What if your child is physically active, or very strong or tall for their age? Ultimately, numbers and guidelines - the body mass index (BMI), for example - have their place, but they don’t tell the whole story. “Studies have demonstrated that purely using a visual assessment of a child’s weight status by a parent can lead to either over- or under-feeding,” says Chris. “This will ultimately lead to the creation of negative associations with food by the child, which can transition into adolescence. Children have a great ability to self-regulate on their own - so if they need more food, they will ask for more. A parent’s role in this is to facilitate choice and encourage a positive relationship with food overall.” So what should you do? If you’re concerned about your child’s weight or BMI measurement, remember you can always talk to your GP for advice. “Try to avoid pressuring yourself or your child into eating the ‘ideal’ diet,” says Chris. “Children and infants develop their own preferences from an early age, and it does not matter how much a parent may like their child to eat loads of fruit and vegetables, if they don’t have a preference for this, over-pressuring can cause more harm than good. “Simple advice would be to introduce a variety of different foods into your child’s diet. Even if they don’t like something the first time, don’t be afraid to reintroduce these again. Studies have shown it takes at least six introductions to a new food until children form a preference.

“Try to avoid bribery, such as offering their favourite foods as a reward for eating healthy foods they don’t like. This just strengthens a preference to the reward food and a stronger dislike for the food they are being bribed to eat. If you feel you may be approaching a ‘standoff ’ situation with something, just move on - over-pressuring can create a negative association with food. “Foods to be wary of are those that are high in sugar and low in nutritional value. These include juice and fizzy drinks, certain cereals and some sweets. A sensible rule of thumb is to opt more for foods that don’t necessarily come with a label on them, such as fresh fruit and veg.” Encourage kids to enjoy food From sitting down together at mealtimes, to cooking together at weekends (kids love helping out), remember, food can be fun and kids will respond to your signals. “It’s important to promote a positive attitude towards food with children by involving them in the selection and preparation, as well as the consumption of it,” says Chris. “Role-modelling positive relationships with the right foods is a strong predicator of a child’s development with regards to healthy eating habits.” Plus, diet is just part of the picture. Being active, getting plenty of time outdoors, exploring and having fun, all play an important part, too

HELP THEM REACH

TOP OF THE CLASS

Help children succeed at school by using simple techniques to boost learning, say the experts. WORDS: Lisa Salmon

I

f you want your child to get to the top of the class, it’s not nearly as simple as just encouraging them to work hard. Parents can play a huge role in helping their kids to fulfil their academic potential, and advanced learning expert Professor Deborah Eyre and education journalist Wendy Berliner, authors of the new book Great Minds and How to Grow Them, believe they know just what parents need to do.

Remember, IQ isn’t fixed. Eyre and Berliner explain the latest neurological and psychological research shows most children are capable of reaching the high levels of performance previously associated only with the gifted and talented. They stress that IQ and potential isn’t fixed - evidence shows it can be grown, and the key is

7 4 O C TO B E R / N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 7

developing the right learning attributes and attitudes Berliner says: “The vast majority of children could do really well at school, but unless parents play their part and help them learn the habits of high performance, they’re far less likely to get there.”

Parents can give kids a flying start. The pair have studied how top students learn, and how this learning can be replicated by virtually all children. “The home is at the heart of this learning revolution,” Berliner stresses. “Parents are a child’s first and longest serving teachers - give your children a flying start at school with proven ways to boost learning.

“Parents can play a huge role in helping their kids to fulfil their academic potential”

Don’t say: You’ve been practising long enough now, do something else. Do say: You’re really good at that now, what’s the next step up?

Encourage curiosity Curiosity is at the heart of all learning and the link with high performance is compelling, so encourage questions and model it yourself. Your job is to answer your children’s questions initially and then later encourage them to find out the answers themselves. Don’t say: Stop asking so many questions. Do say: I wonder why ...?

Encourage critical or logical thinking The characteristic most associated with academic success is the ability to deduct, hypothesise, reason and seek evidence - Sherlock Holmes is your model for this. Don’t say: Why are you interested in that? Who cares? Do say: Why do you think that happened? How could you work it out?

“And keep things enjoyable - evidence shows children who do well at school have warm relationships with their parents.”

Getting kids to the top of the class. Here are Berliner and Eyre’s tips to help your child to fulfil their academic potential.

Encourage resilience Children who do well at school aren’t put off by failing- they keep trying until they get better. Your job when a child says they’re rubbish or can’t do something is to make them believe in themselves and keep going. Don’t say: Let me do it for you. Do say: I know it’s hard now, but you can do this if you keep trying.

“Evidence shows children who do well at school have warm relationships with their parents”

Encourage planning and monitoring Knowing how they’re doing - that they’re on track with their homework, for example - and knowing they need to put more effort into improving certain things, is very important to high performers. Don’t say: Just start somewhere and muddle along. Do say: How are you going to tackle this? Do you know you’re on track? How can you tell you’re doing it right?

Encourage open-mindedness Being open to new ideas is the hallmark of an advanced learner. Start with being open-minded yourself, and model what it’s like to be receptive to ideas that differ from your own. Don’t say: What a stupid idea. Do say: Isn’t that interesting? I never thought of that, but that’s such a good approach.

Encourage practice It’s the only way to get better. Make sure it’s regular, deliberate and planned practice, working towards achievable incremental goals, and your child practices what he/she can’t do until they can do it well. O C TO B E R / N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 7 7 5

TRAVEL TO THE CARIBBEAN FOR LESS

ground-breaking initiative from Virgin Holidays could save single-parent families nearly £1,000 on a holiday. Nearly two million Brits are single parents, yet when it comes to booking holidays the market is woefully under-serviced. “We constantly hear from single parents who find themselves ‘priced out’ of family activities,” says Rosie Ferguson, CEO of UK charity Gingerbread, which provides specialist advice, support and advocacy to single parents. “All too often we see tickets, deals and memberships that offer family discounts - but only for couple families. That isn’t just frustrating for single parents; it’s also short-sighted of businesses, which are ignoring two million potential customers.” In a bid to fill a gaping hole, Virgin Holidays has announced a new pricing structure for single-parent holidays, a first for the long-haul market.

second person happens to be a child, no discount is currently given. However, the new initiative feel factor in a reduced cost if an adult and child are occupying the room.

How will it work?

Where can you book?

Pricing for long-haul holidays is usually based on two people sharing a room, although if that

Where can you go? Virgin has partnered with 10 resorts across the Caribbean, including four resorts within the Elite Island Resorts Collection, renowned for their family-friendly all-inclusive offerings. Rooms will be available to book from October 1, 2017 - although are subject to availability.

So how much can you save? If a single-parent was to travel with one child for a seven-night holiday over the May school holidays in 2018, they would save £330 at St James’ Club & Villas and a whopping £745 at Pineapple Beach Club, both in Antigua.

NADIYA HUSSAIN’S TOP PARENTING TIPS

The foodie has some brilliant ideas for making family life easier. WORDS: Claire Spreadbury

adiya Hussain’s house sounds like a great place to be a kid. You misbehave, you get strapped into a T-shirt with your sibling. You want everyone to know you’re sad without having to say anything? No problem. The 32-year-old Bake Off winner seems to have pretty much every parenting problem down pat, and is happy to keep learning more.

Here, she shares her tips and tricks to help make family life just a little bit easier... Be a team “The busier I get, the more thought I need to put into juggling work and home life. I’m really lucky, though, because when I’m not around, my husband Abdal - who still works a full-time IT job - manages to drop the kids off, pick them up and reheat the food (he doesn’t cook but he’s very good at reheating). It’s all about balancing. Somehow 7 8 O C TO B E R / N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 7

“Whenever the kids have a squabble, we have a big T-shirt of their dad’s and they have to wear it. So we stick them both in the T-shirt and they have to be as close together as is physically possible and have no choice about it”

we manage and it doesn’t feel like a struggle, but I think he’s really good at making me feel like it’s not a struggle. So when there are things I can’t keep up with, he just does them. “When my little girl Maryam turned one-anda-half [she’s now 6], she became a completely different person. I found the, ‘No, I’m not going to listen to you’ phase really difficult because the boys [Musa, now 10, and Dawud, 9] just got on with whatever it was that I told them to do. I really

“I cook with my little girl but the boys are really good in the kitchen, so they go off and do their own thing now” struggled. But I learned that rather than trying to deal with it, it’s better to hand them over and vent your anger without venting it on them. “I lived in Leeds then and there weren’t really many people around. I remember having days where she’d be screaming and shouting and saying ‘no’ to everything, and as soon as my husband walked in, I’d literally hand her over and say, ‘It’s been one of those days’. Then she’d be good as gold for him. But what you can’t do is wait for a miraculous change. They will ride the phase out. There’s no point getting anxious.”

Make time for your family including your partner

“With kids, sometimes they don’t want to talk about it, but they want you to know they’re upset. And sometimes you don’t. As a parent, I feel really bad when I don’t know. So we have a step in the house where if they’re feeling sad, they go and sit on it. Even I go and sit on that step if I’m upset about something. It works.”

Switch off tech “Switch everything off for family time. We have a box and all the phones go in there. We lock it up and the key goes away. So that includes my phone, the kids’, everything goes away in this box. Even if it buzzes or rings, we don’t touch it. We have a landline and if there’s an emergency, somebody will ring that. Otherwise, it gets put away. And some nights we just have to do that, because we’re all guilty of picking up our phones.” Nadiya’s British Food Adventure by Nadiya Hussain is published by Michael Joseph, priced £20. Available now.

“I try my very best not to be in work mode all the time. Some days I’m too busy, so they’ll go off and do their own thing, but other days, I’ll put everything off until the children go to bed. Then I realise I also have a husband and he needs attention, too, so some nights and some weekends, I’ll give to him.”

Teach little ones to clean up after themselves “I cook with my little girl but the boys are really good in the kitchen, so they go off and do their own thing now. Maryam loves cooking and she’s not a mess-maker. She tidies up as she goes along, but that’s the rule in our house: If you make the mess, you have to tidy it up. They’ve now learned the consequence of being messy and it’s made them really tidy, which is a godsend. Whereas my husband uses every pan, knife and board in the house for a spaghetti bolognese... “

Make your kids sort out their own arguments “Whenever the kids have a squabble, we have a big T-shirt of their dad’s and they have to wear it. So we stick them both in the T-shirt and they have to be as close together as is physically possible and have no choice about it. And then we just leave them. They end up giggling and having a great time - I don’t even have to intervene.”

Create a sad corner “We have a little corner by the stairs and when we moved, we had to recreate it. That’s the corner where if you’re sad, you go and sit there and somebody knows. We all get wrapped up in other things and we forget to ask, ‘How are you? How was your day?’ sometimes. I learned that from my husband. He said, ‘Look, I’m not a mind reader, if you’re upset, you’ve got to tell me you’re upset. O C TO B E R / N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 7 7 9

Santa didn’t come to me…

every child deserves a family I

n England over 4,000 children are waiting for loving adoptive parents. They are a range of ages, from a variety of backgrounds. What they have in common is a difficult start in life and that they can no longer be brought up by their birth families. All these children need a loving, stable home. They need parents who will stick by them through the good times and the bad. They need support and love to help them overcome their troubled backgrounds, make sense of who they are and grow up to be safe and secure. Adoption is a way of providing a permanent family for children. Parenting adopted children, whilst presenting unique challenges, can be extremely rewarding. If you are able to offer love, commitment, time, patience and the motivation to want to understand how your child sees the world, then that is a great start and the rewards will be limitless. It may be that you have a wish to be a parent but fertility issues mean that you cannot have a birth child. Or you may already have a family but feel you still have space for another child. Or you may be single and feel that you have masses of love, security and happiness to offer to a child who has not had a great start in life and/or has ongoing challenges. Or you may have adopted and are thinking of adopting again. Whether you are married or single, divorced or living with a partner, gay or straight, unemployed

8 2 O C TO B E R / N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 7

or disabled, and whatever your cultural background adoption may be for you.

What does it take to be an adoptive parent? Adoptive parents need the same qualities as any other parent. Adoption offers children the love, stability and security of family life they may not have experienced before. Have confidence that you have what it takes! You will need to give your adopted child(ren) lots of individual time, understanding and support. Children who experience unmet physical and emotional needs early in life can have their later development adversely affected, perhaps requiring different parenting techniques to a birth child. That may sound daunting but there is plenty of support available, via your agency and voluntary support agencies. On a practical level, you will need to be able to support a child financially, though you don’t have to be a millionaire or even be a homeowner. You can apply for tax credits to supplement your income when you adopt, and other financial help may

also be available in the form of one-off or regular payments. When you first adopt, one partner will be expected to take time off work for between six and twelve months to help the child settle in. Your child will also need your ongoing support to help them understand about their birth family and why they were adopted. You will need to be able to help discuss their history with them in a respectful way and highlight the positives in their past. Where it is in their best interests there may be ongoing contact with the child’s birth family. This can involve anything from occasional meetings with birth family members or ‘letterbox’ contact once or twice a year. As an adoptive parent, you will need to support your child with whatever arrangements are agreed for contact with their birth family. Adoption is a lifelong commitment requiring skill, empathy, energy, patience – and a sense of humour! But there can be no greater reward than transforming a child’s life forever and building a happy, fulfilled family. Adoption transforms the lives of some of the most vulnerable children in society.
