Open Air Sculpture Exhibition Opens in the Gardens of Knebworth House

S

et in 250 acres of rolling Hertfordshire countryside, Knebworth House is one of England’s most colourful stately homes. It is remarkable for having been in the Lytton family for more than 500 years. Its romantic gothic exterior complete with turrets, domes and gargoyles conceals a much older Tudor red brick house.

Knebworth achieved fame in Victorian times as the home of the novelist, playwright and politician Edward Bulwer Lytton author of the words “The pen is mightier than the sword”. Other notable family members included Constance Lytton, the Suffragette and her father, Robert Lytton, the Viceroy of India who proclaimed Queen Victoria Empress of India at the Great Delhi Durbar of 1877. The House has been visited by famous figures such as Queen Elizabeth 1, Charles Dickens, Winston Churchill and many more. There have been gardens at Knebworth House since at least the 17th Century, but the present layout dates largely from the Edwardian era. The architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, who married into the Lytton family, simplified the ornate beds and statuary of the Victorian garden with lawns and avenues of pollarded lime trees. Popular features of the 28 acres now include a maze, the organically run walled kitchen garden, the Gertrude Jekyll Herb Garden and the Dinosaur Trail, where 72 life-sized dinosaurs can be found grazing amongst the rhododendrons and the redwoods. Exploring the woodland paths, children can learn about the T-Rex, the Woolly Mammoth and other fascinating pre-historic creatures. Open Air Sculpture at Knebworth is an exciting new sculpture exhibition taking place in the idyllic setting of the gardens of Knebworth House which runs until Sunday 31st August

A PUTGEUMSBTE2R0 1240 1 4 8 6S E

2014. The exhibition has been curated by British Art Portfolio, their first sculpture show to be held in the Garden. The show features the work of 19 contemporary sculptors each displaying two or three pieces using materials such as bronze, wood, marble, stone, copper and stainless steel in a wide range of subjects and styles to suit all budgets. In choosing the sculptors British Art Portfolio has incorporated established names alongside inspiring new talent to create a show that will enlighten, provoke, excite and charm the visitor. The gardens at Knebworth were largely influenced by Sir Edwin Lutyens who married into the Lytton family in 1897. He created a series of ‘garden rooms’ each with a different feel, which are effectively highlighted by the skilful placing of each sculpture. ‘The gardens are the perfect place for sculpture and it is exciting to introduce man-made art into the landscape, as differing areas of the gardens offer new surprises round every corner’ says Amanda Lowther of British Art Portfolio. Martha Lytton Cobbold, MD of Lytton Enterprises commented, “We are delighted to be working with British Art Portfolio. The sculptures look superb in the Gardens and I’m sure our visitors will enjoy them – there is such a wide range of subjects; from running cheetahs and a very majestic zebra to intriguing abstract forms.”

There is no additional charge to visit the exhibition, which is included in the Gardens & Park admission ticket. See www.knebworthhouse.com for more information, and to view the online catalogue for the exhibition.

BRAND NEW THEATRE, SAME OUTSTANDING CARE This year has proven to be one of the most exciting at Spire Harpenden Hospital with a five million pound expansion project, which has included a fifth theatre. We spoke to staff members at Spire who have been involved in the project.

JULIA Sitting by the pond, enjoying a costa coffee, hospital director, Julia Salmon, eagerly tells us about the nearly completed expansion project at Spire Harpenden Hospital. “I can’t wait to show off what we’ve done and see patients in the rooms. Patients are at the centre of what we do, and it will be fantastic to see them benefitting from our new facilities.” The five million pound project, begun in February this year, is drawing to a close. Once completed, the hospital will boast five well equipped theatres, a Bupa Wellness Centre, and four wards, including the newly completed Cancer ward. Julia explains why the project was necessary; “Our objective is to offer state of the art facilities and outstanding care to the local community. Demand for private healthcare is increasing, as is demand to support the NHS. We currently treat around 900 inpatients and 3,000 outpatients each month and the expansion will allow Spire Harpenden to welcome the expanding market. The new state of the art theatre and a further seven private ensuite rooms are a great addition to the facilities we already offer at the hospital.” “The project was three years in the planning.” Says Julia “We are very aware of our situation within the 10 SEPTEMBER 2014

beautiful Harpenden green belt and wanted our expansion to be sympathetic to the picturesque environment. For this reason, we decided not to extend the footprint of the hospital, and instead creatively expanded within it, using an internal courtyard for the new facilities.” This was done by building the theatre modules off site, which were winched into the atrium inside the existing building in April. “It was a nail biting day, each module weighed 20 tonnes, and we watched nervously as they were craned into place with only an inch or so to spare!” Once this had taken place, work progressed quickly, and it’s only been seven months from the first shovel in the ground to the impressive finished article. “I would like thank our patients, neighbours and staff for their support and understanding while the work has been going on. I would also like to say a huge thank you to our builders for being so accommodating throughout the project. They recognised the sensitive nature of our hospital and the need to prioritise patient care, accommodating pauses in the works when necessary.” We would like to invite anyone who is interested to visit the hospital to see what we have done.

Spire Harpenden are keen to keep up the refurbishment momentum. Julia adds “Once this project is completed, we have set our sights on refurbishing the main reception area, which should be completed by the end of this year.”

VERONICA Veronica Magee, Ward Manager at Spire Harpenden, is excited about the prospects afforded by the new ward and theatre. “We pride ourselves on providing a continuity of care for our patients, and this expansion has meant that we have been able to employ more nurses with specialist qualifications. We are very proud of the high levels of patient satisfaction, and our aim is to maintain these very high standards.” 99% of our patients rated our quality of service as Excellent, Very Good or Good in 2013 in our annual survey.

KAREN Karen Pacey, Theatre Scheduling Administrator, has worked at Spire Harpenden for 9 years. Her role in theatres means that she is particularly excited about the opening of the new theatre. “It’s has been so nice seeing it evolve from a courtyard to an amazing space. All the consultants can’t wait to get in and operate. Now we’re just waiting for the finishing touches, which include my new office!” The new theatre will affect Karen’s job, bringing more challenges due to the new theatre, something she is welcoming. “The new theatre will really ramp up my role as I will be answerable to filling the new theatre. I am passionate about the work I do and excited about the new challenges I will face. I get great pleasure from making things happen.”

ANNE-MARIE Anne-Marie O’Beirne and her team of specialist nurses are looking forward to moving into the new Heartwood Ward which is the new cancer ward at Spire Harpenden. “We are excited to be able to offer seven new purpose built en-suite rooms to our patients. The wing offers a tranquil environment, with lovely views and dedicated staff. We want our patients to feel at home while they receive their chemotherapy treatment, and the new ward will offer comfortable and restful surroundings.”

Oncology Nurses: Roma, Anne-Marie and Debbie

SABRINA Deputy theatre manager, Sabrina Silom, is looking forward to getting into the new theatre. “I worked with the builders to design the layout, so it is purpose built and user-friendly.” The theatre development includes a new recovery area for the theatres to accommodate additional patients.

Many staff members, including Sabrina, have worked at the hospital for a number of years and are excited to see the expansion. Sabrina is thankful to the theatre staff for their support; “I am so grateful to the team for their hard work during the building project; we have all pulled together, consistently supporting one another to manage the extra workload. We are like a family, we know each other’s strengths and limitations, and are excited to face the challenges a new theatre brings.”

Miller and Carter, Brookmans Park

A true taste of ‘The Steak Experience’ After frequenting the new steakhouse in Brookmans Park, I am becoming a firm (as they call it) ’Raving Fan’ of the restaurant. Soon to celebrate their 1st birthday in September the M&C Brookmans Park team have been going from strength to strength.

T

he Brookmans Park restaurant consists of 130 covers of varying table sizes and private dining for up to 20 split over two floors, boasting two beautiful and bright cocktail bars. Situated on the Great North Road, the steak house’s modern welcoming exterior, with its patio fire pit already blazing, is only boosted by the welcoming & warm greeting from the bar staff upon every arrival. The interior & decor of deep reds and chocolate brown feels sophisticated, indulgent and yet comfortable. Our host Mike explained the days steak special 24oz ribeye on the bone called a ‘tomahawk’ - a truly one of a kind steak experience. What makes it so special is the full 28 day ageing process giving an amazing rich flavour produced from the fat mouth watering ribeye marbling cut...ok I’m sold! Our waitress Lisa appears bright and ready, with some guidance and persuasion I’m talked into having a mojito cocktail. The rest of table follow suit and order a few other cocktails and wine. Our drinks arrive in a timely fashion looking fresh and tasty, The mojito is cool and sharp with a hit of alcohol and everyone seems pleased with their choices. Lisa is knowledgeable with the menu and able to answer and advise, again we go with her recommendation of the 16oz Chateau Briand Fillet to share with surf & turf and a side of BBQ ribs (good thing I’m hungry!). We order some sharing breads while we wait for the steak feast to come.

The atmosphere is energetic & social, all tables around us are talkative and happy. After about 30 minutes our ‘steak experience’ arrives. The steaks looked sublime and are cooked perfectly, rich & succulent topped with parsley butter (a standard for all the steaks). The side of ribs a must, had plenty of meat on the bone. The side dishes that come as standard for all the steak meals include a fresh, moist salad wedge with choice of topping, crispy baked onion loaf, seasoned fries and multiple steak sauces. Along with the Mac ’n’ cheese side I chose, this really was a feast to savour. House manager Derrick, politely visited our table to see how we were doing. His enthusiasm and delight at our menu choice was refreshing and his acknowledgment of his teams hard work was uplifting. To finish the evening we managed to squeeze in the rich and lovely sharing dessert and coffees. I indulged with a Baileys hot chocolate... the diet can wait! The final triumph was the genuine farewells from our waitress Lisa and host Mike with all of the bar staff that finished our perfect night. With Miller & Carter’s tag line being ‘For The Love Of Steak’.... Brookmans Park you deliver in abundance! Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is one of the most prestigious, and glamourous annual fashion shows in the world, and is to take place in London for the first time this December.

D

ozens of international supermodels will strut their stuff at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show at Earls Court in December, the US brand have announced. The event, which will be broadcast to 192 countries, has only ever once before ventured outside America when it transferred to Cannes during the film festival in 2000.

Speaking at the company’s European flagship store on New Bond Street, Victoria’s Secret president and chief marketing officer Ed Razek said it had wanted to hold the show in London since 1998. But Mr Razek, accompanied by two of the US brand’s “angels” Adriana Lima and Candice Swanepoel, said this year was now the right time because the brand now has a “critical mass” in the UK with six stores and plans to open more. Although he said the models were not booked yet, he revealed that he has already asked British model of the moment Cara Delevingne to “save the date”. He added: “Cara actually was on the runway the last two years. I’ll let you in on a secret, I saw Cara and told her it was coming to London and told her to save the date, she was excited.” The show is a lavish event featuring elaborate costumed lingerie, a variety of musical acts by leading entertainers, and intricate set designs within the show. Each year, the show attracts hundreds of celebrities and entertainers, 118 4S SE EP PTTE EMMB BE ER R22001144

and features twenty to forty of the world’s top fashion models as part of the fashion show. Past Angels have included Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Doutzen Kroes, Candice Swanepoel and Miranda Kerr. Previous year’s musical acts have included Kanye West, Maroon 5, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Akon, Black Eyed Peas, Usher, Seal, Justin Timberlake, The Spice Girls, Ricky Martin, Sting, will.i.am, Mary J. Guests at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show are seated among a star-studded audience which has previously included celebrities such as Jay-Z, Beyonce, Orlando Bloom, Elton John, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Longoria, Denzel Washington, P. The “fashion, fantasy and entertainment” spectacle will be directed by Britain’s Hamish Hamilton, who oversaw the televising of the opening and closing ceremonies for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will be one of the last events hosted by Earls Court, which is due to be demolished next year. www.victoriassecret.co.uk www.cornucopia-events.co.uk/victorias-secret-fashion-show

Vienna Festival Ballet

Vienna Festival Ballet wrapped up their Spring tour of the UK in Radlett at the beginning of June. They have a strong relationship with the Radlett Centre, most years returning for both their Spring and Autumn seasons to adoring audiences – a lot of them regulars. Audience member Julie Sturrock called the performance of Cinderella, ‘magical’, and another audience member, Sharon Russell says it was ‘amazing! Looking forward to seeing them again in September.’

Sitting in on their get in, they’re in high spirits for the last shows of the tour. They have class on stage to stretch and warm themselves up, which is a show of technique I’d pay to see in itself. They have this class before every show, and in the weeks building up to rehearsals. I think it’s easy to forget the athletic regime these dancers have to adhere to every day, when you’re watching them effortlessly gliding across the stage in pretty costumes. Even though the tour is coming to a close, ballet mistress Emily Hufton doesn’t let them get away with anything, constantly calling out ways in which to improve technique with a minute change in posture or balance. It’s evidently this attention to detail which has kept the company going strong for the past 34 years. But we mustn’t forget they’re not just dancers, but actors. Emily-Joy Smith explained, ‘the Spring tour for me was a great challenge, having major roles in both Cinderella and Swan Lake. The hardest part for me was going from one character to another, the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella and White Swan in Swan Lake meant I had completely different characters to work with for each ballet.’ Amongst the company which toured this Spring, we know that principal dancer Emily Joy-Smith, who danced the Fairy ST 2120 SAEUP G TU EM B 2E0R1 42 0 1 4

Godmother in Cinderella, will return for the Autumn tour in role of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Emily-Joy Smith currently features as the front of their marketing campaign, posing in the pink Sugar Plum Fairy tutu which will surely appeal to young ballerinas. ‘I’m looking forward to the Christmassy feeling you get with The Nutcracker, and of course the amazing costumes, and the music – there’s just so much to look forward to.’ Rehearsals for their Autumn Tour of the Nutcracker begin in September. The enchanting tale of The Nutcracker is one of the world’s best loved ballets with music by Tchaikovsky. The story centres around Clara and her nutcracker doll, which magically transforms into a princeply soldier. Their adventures see Clara and the Nutcracker doll combat the Mouse King, and join the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier on a wonderful journey through a shimmering winter land scene to a Kingdom made entirely of sweets. It’s sure to be a Christmas treat for all the family. VFB return to Radlett on Saturday 1st November with two shows of The Nutcracker at the Radlett Centre.

Before moving to London, Marcus spent two years as the sous chef at two Michelin star restaurant, La Champignon Sauvage in Cheltenham. Under Marcus’s direction, the restaurant will be serving lunch and evening a la carte options, as well as his signature six course tasting menus, all with an emphasis on affordable fine-dining. Menu examples include, Scallops, Sweetcorn & Buttermilk; Fillet of Beef, Red Wine braised Cheek, Bone Marrow, Caramelised Chicory & Maple Syrup; Seasonal Wild Salmon, Artichokes, Heritage Tomatoes, Roast Red Pepper and to finish, Tonka Bean Parfait, Strawberries & Basil. Chefs Q&A Describe your style Modern British. I grew up in Oxfordshire in a family of cooks. I have always loved food and am as British as they come! I try to use seasonal ingredients and local produce where possible. I really enjoy taking simple ingredients and turning them into something that tastes great. How do you decide your menu? I work with the seasons and take inspiration from my team. Lots of tasting! Which menu dish do you most enjoy preparing? I enjoy making all the dishes on the menu and don’t have a particular favourite although the Lobster Ravioli is great for the summer. What ingredient is most important to your cooking? Fruits as these create the balance between sweet and savoury dishes. What’s been your best culinary idea? I couldn’t pin down a particular idea but stumbling across foraging has changed my cooking. I love being able to go out for a walk on the estate, find wild herbs, plants and mushrooms and take them back to the kitchen and make something extraordinary out of them. Who did you train under and what did they teach you? I first trained under Gus Ashenford at Chavignol in Chipping Norton. He taught me the classic French techniques that I enjoyed using on local British produce. My time with Claude Bosi and Hibiscus in London taught me finesse in finishing my dishes. What’s your prediction for the next food trend? I don’t really have an opinion on food trends and don’t follow them. I am more interested in the seasons and what makes great tasting food. What’s in your fridge at home? Pots of pureed food and baby milk! I have a 7 month old daughter at home. Favourite quick meal? A great sandwich. Brie de Meaux, cured ham and red onion marmalade – delicious! Top three tips for amateur chefs? Buy best produce available, keep it simple and taste taste taste! Best cookbook? French Provincial Cooking by Elizabeth David

Exmoor Caviar Britain’s First and Only British Caviar Producer

E

xmoor Caviar is the first and only British caviar producer based in the United Kingdom. Set in the heart of Devon’s Exmoor, the pioneering farm is ethical, fastidious on sustainability and provenance whilst never compromising on the unique and exquisite taste, producing the finest caviar celebrated by chefs and aficionados alike.

Exmoor Caviar is the vision of caviar expert Ken Benning a who understands the nuances of creating a beautiful product that stands testament to the unique procedures the British farm has developed and placed throughout the sturgeon’s lifespan. Exmoor Caviar prides itself not only as Britain’s first and only home produced Caviar but also on the ethical methods in which they nurture and harvest their sturgeon. The water in which the fish resides is of paramount importance to the health of the fish and thus flavour development of the eggs. Exmoor Caviar ensures that there is no hothousing in un-naturally warm waters and that, unlike the re-circulated farms of Europe, each and every day over 40 million litres of fresh Exmoor Spring water passes through the farm’s pools providing the perfect habitat for the sturgeon. The farm also ensures 28 SEPTEMBER 2014

no pain is induced to the fish through the harvesting process and has pledged a total commitment to use the whole sturgeon as meat once the caviar has been reaped. After using ethical and coveted extraction methods, the caviar is carefully washed and cleaned in natural, local spring water from the ground, then hand sieved and rested, allowing the natural flavors and textures to be showcased. The final stage of the caviar making process is the inclusion of the fresh salts which creates Exmoor Caviar’s two very distinct variants in its ever-expanding portfolio - Cornish sea salt and Hebridean salted. The Cornish salted possesses a mellow, delicate taste with a smooth, clean finish and the Hebridean gives a more robust, stronger, punchier tickle to the tastebuds. Caviar is served in may different ways but we prefer the simplest method of placing the eggs on the back of the hand with a mother of pearl spoon and then bringing directly to the mouth allowing the exquisite and subtle flavour to shine through. Exmoor Caviar is available to purchase at www.exmoorcaviar.com

The 2014 event will be the 8th time runner’s line up to challenge for the trophies and in response to increased demand registration has now opened with runners already signing up to secure their place in Hertfordshire’s biggest 10k run. Early registration is advised as the event has reached capacity before race day for the last two years. For people who are looking to get fit this year the HERTS 10K makes the perfect achievable goal. Over the years thousands of people have taken part with many saying that six months before the event they couldn’t run more than 10 meters, but come the day they were eagerly limbering up looking forward to their first 10k race. After the run last year one competitor said,” When I started training for this event I thought it would be tough but compared to what my friend has had to go through battling cancer it was nothing – in fact I had a great time and achieved something I never thought possible.” The event, which costs £17 to enter, is open to anyone over the age of 12. own a quiet leafy lane and yet only 10 minutes from the heart of St Albans, nestles OSPREY St Albans, the beautiful lifestyle store created by OSPREY LONDON designer-owner Graeme Ellisdon. With a homewares store, a popular café and an outlet store all sharing the site, housed in a series of renovated barns around a picturesque courtyard, this unexpected location is one that style aficionados are guaranteed to love. “We recently opened the new OSPREY LONDON flagship store on London’s Regent Street,” he tells us, “but Hertfordshire is our home county and restoring these once neglected buildings has been a long-term labour of love.” Over in the OSPREY St Albans main building, we’re introduced to the brand’s latest collection of equestrian-inspired Vachetta leather handbags for her (pictured, bottom right) and workbags for him (shown, top right). Handstitched in Italy using traditional saddlery techniques and made in only very small quantities, the beauty of these elegant bags is that this handsome leather just gets better with age. It seems, however, that leather is just the beginning at OSPREY St Albans. With a gorgeous selection of jewellery, home fragrance, lighting, art, taxidermy and architectural oak furniture, this hidden gem is a treasure trove for those seeking design inspiration. “In a way, I see myself as a curator,” says Graeme. “Many of the special, one-off things you see here, we find on our travels - but the thread that ties everything together is a strong sense of design, our love of natural materials and the skill of the craftsman.” No visit here is complete without a visit to the store’s Saddlery Café, which serves wheat and gluten-free savouries and cakes; loose leaf tea and great coffee, charmingly presented on vintage china. But for all the beautiful things on offer, there’s nothing remotely stuffy about this place, a fact which is underlined by the business’s motto: “Muddy boots, dogs & children welcome.” So whether you’re looking for design inspiration or simply somewhere great for lunch this autumn, ditch the car and head out across the countryside to OSPREY St Albans – dogs and children optional!

Lussmanns, The Foragers at Verulam Arms and That Little Place will each be preparing one of the three courses at the food tasting event on Thursday 2 October. On the following evening there will also be the opportunity to taste wines from around the world. Book your tickets now to join me at these wonderful tasting events.” Council Beric Read, Portfolio Holder for Community Engagement and Localism at St Albans City and District Council, said: “The Food & Drink Festival is a great showcase for local food businesses, from restaurants to producers. The event is one of a number organised by the Council to help attract visitors to the District as part of a wider strategy to support the local economy.”

SPECTACULAR

FLOWER FESTIVAL AT ST ALBANS CATHEDRAL

For the first time in 12 years, St Albans Cathedral is hosting a stunning Flower Festival. The ‘Music in Bloom’ Festival will transform every inch of the building into an oasis of colour and music. The four-day event takes place from 25th-28th September. Hundreds of beautiful and imaginative flower displays will clothe the ancient stones – from delicate posies to majestic designs that scale the heights of the Cathedral nave. The arrangements are themed on musical titles of every genre - classical pieces from Vivaldi, Handel and Holst will take their place alongside modern classics from Adele, Abba, and Elton John. You can enjoy seeing hymns, nursery rhymes, songs from the musicals and famous film theme tunes all come to life, and as you explore the building musicians and singers at every turn will enhance the festive atmosphere. But flowers and music are not the only attraction. The Abbot’s Kitchen and the Festival Marquee will be serving homemade teas and lunches throughout the Festival, and there’s even the chance to take part in Flower Arranging Classes. 42 SEPTEMBER 2014

There are also two very special evening events: Gala Preview Evening Wednesday 24th September A celebration of flowers and music to open the Festival with music performed by the winners of the 2014 St Albans Young Musicians competition. Drink and refreshments included. Tickets £25. Jazz Picnic - Saturday 27th September An informal evening of musical entertainment among the flowers! Bring your own rug and picnic, explore the flowers and enjoy music from the St Albans Cathedral Girls Choir and S.T.A.J.E. (St Albans Jazz Ensemble). Tickets £15; Under 12s £5. Chair of the Flower Festival Committee, Liz Semple, said, "We hope to be welcoming visitors from far and wide and, above all, we want them to have a fun day out so we have planned a Festival which appeals to everyone, not just to those with a particular interest in flowers. Come along and be entertained, amazed and delighted!"

Festival Opening Times Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10am – 5pm Sunday 1pm – 6pm. Last admission one hour before closing.

THE BEST JUST GOT BETTER (AND BIGGER!)

G

allery Rouge is bigger and better than ever! Their St. Albans gallery has recently undergone expansion and renovation work over the summer months, with the lower gallery level now boasting as extensive an exhibition space as the glorious ground floor. “I approach my galleries to best respond to our clients requirements” elaborates owner Kuldip Chohan, “the form and function evolves to showcase the very best international talent we represent- the rare and exclusive which we are known for.” Sweeping into both the St. Albans and Harpenden galleries for the autumn season are the new collections from established faces as well as emerging talent. Arriving from California via St. Petersburg are the irresistible oil works of Sergey Cherep. A perfect balance of animated brushwork and primary colour, the artist has introduced softness through use of subtle purple accents to temper his blazing landscapes. Born amidst the tension of the Soviet conflict with China in 1969, Cherep spent his youth honing rigidly traditional skills whilst secretly dreaming of freedom to unleash his own ideas. Increasingly over the last decade, art of Russian origin is experiencing renewed interest from global institutions. A short assessment of current retrospectives reveals Kazimir Malevich

at Tate Modern and Vasily Kandinsky at the Soloman Guggenheim in New York, indicting a generation of curators who value such heritage. Though Cherep relocated to the States in the early nineties after becoming enchanted by the Napa Valley, his works remain a fusion of Eastern temperament and Western climate. The collection of original oil paintings now on display in the Harpenden gallery are a must-see for collectors aspiring to acquire works of show-stopping quality. At the other end of the artistic spectrum are the highly intricate works of Spaniard J.M. Reyes. Brand new to Gallery Rouge St. Albans for the autumn/winter season, this considered oil painter has developed an Avant-garde reputation for his exotic still life works. Extreme close-ups of grapes appear as luminous marbles inviting appreciators of both traditional and contemporary art to gaze in awe. Discerning collectors may have already encountered his talent; commissioned by Jerez, the home of sherry, the paintings of Reyes adorned the Spanish city this summer as part of its celebration as the European City of Wine 2014. Whilst Sergey Cherep epitomises the cross cultural approach, Reyes is pure warm continental soul, intoxicating strokes depicting ripe fruit from sun-baked soil.

"our clients thrive on the breadth of art we represent - the more display space we have, the more choice we can offer. Each individual prizes the artwork they select as a reflection of themselves in some way. It is a personal statement, a mirror of what is important to the collector."

John-Mark Gleadow “The Beatles” Signed Canvas Edition, £795

Eagerly anticipated and long awaited (original works are painstaking, taking 4-5 months to create), the collection of limited edition canvas pieces from exclusively represented American artist John-Mark Gleadow have arrived. Spread across both galleries, the compositions are a welcome sight for those who have followed the evolution of his trade-mark painted book spines. Images appraise familiar subjects with a renewed intensity. Many collectors responded with lust after the Classic Rock pairing raced across the Atlantic; The Beatles will no doubt cause the same skirmish. Joining the fray are compositions taking in the old school glamour of Hollywood, the luxury of lifestyle labels as well as international favourite Harry Potter. The marvel of Gleadow's paintings is the manner in which they communicate their owner's interests; passions, pastimes, novels, music, movies and places.

The largest gallery in Hertfordshire and North London. The widest choice from an international collection of artists, many of whom are exclusively represented by Gallery Rouge. An emphasis on affordable originals and quality limited editions. As the seasons change and attention turns to your home, have you experienced the difference at Gallery Rouge yet?

It is for exactly this reason that Kuldip felt that the expansion of the St. Albans gallery so important; "our clients thrive on the breadth of art we represent - the more display space we have, the more choice we can offer. Each individual prizes the artwork they select as a reflection of themselves in some way. It is a personal statement, a mirror of what is important to the collector." Combining superior artistic knowledge with a concise aesthetic vision, Kuldip along with the friendly specialist consultants is on hand to help match painting to person.

A FIRST CLASS EDUCATION

S

et in 23 acres of parkland, Lockers Park is a day and boarding school that has been educating boys aged 5 – 13 years to the highest standard for over 130 years. An emphasis on academic excellence combined with first-rate pastoral care nurtures the boys to produce their best. Boys are prepared for the best of British public and independent schools. Lockers Park does not feed to any particular school, but the Headmaster ad staff work with the boys and their parents to find the most appropriate school to further his education. Lockers Park academic results are excellent. As a small family school of 145 boys with an average class size of 15 and an impressive staff:pupil ratio of 1:8, individuality is able to flourish. This ensures that every boy achieves his full potential and, each year, all the leavers succeed with Common Entrance and pass on to the senior school of their choice, often with a scholarship. The most recent ISI inspection described the curriculum as “excellent” and commented on the breadth of subjects covered. However, it isn’t all about what happens in the classroom. At Lockers Park, an emphasis on outdoor play, exercise and a wide range of boys’ activities leads to increased concentration during lessons. All the boys have the opportunity to take part in sports and activities every day and, as well as our main team games of rugby, football, cricket and hockey, a variety of individual sports such as tennis, squash, athletics, shooting and skiing are offered. Both boarders and day boys take part in many other extracurricular activities including joining the school’s Cub or Scout pack. The arts are a important part of life at Lockers. The junior and senior plays are the focus of the drama year but there are plenty of other opportunities to perform including the Poetry Speaking Competition and the hotly contested Debating Competition. Music is one of the major strengths of the school with nearly all the boys learning to play an instrument, and many learning two or three. The instrumental ensembles all perform to a very high standard and the Chapel Choir regularly sings at prestigious venues such as St John's, Smith Square, London. The annual Chapel Concert and Summer Concerts showcase all that is best about music at Lockers but, in keeping with the Lockers Park spirit, there are regular informal concerts and participation for all is the mantra. The underlying ethos at Lockers Park is born out of its boarding heritage

and the inclusive nature of the school day. The approach is to ensure that the benefits of Lockers life are encompassed within the fees. This includes flexible pick up, extended hours and after school activities. Boys can be dropped off as early as 7.00 am for breakfast and may stay for supper, all at no extra charge and without notice – especially useful for busy parents. Boarders’ evening activities such as fun nights are open to all and trips and outings are included in the termly fees. Alongside the full boarders, many boys choose flexi boarding (two to three nights a week) so that they can experience the camaraderie of boarding life, develop the independence and community spirit that boarding instils while also maintaining a full home life. The best of both worlds for many families. In short, Lockers Park is a very special place where happy and wellmotivated boys flourish in an environment that is specifically suited to their needs. In the words of Christopher Wilson, the Headmaster,

At Lockers Park, we offer a first class education, hold traditional values dear but infuse this with modern practice. We encourage all boys to participate by living a full life and enjoying the busy school day. Boys are motivated, energetic and ambitious when they leave us for senior school. We are proud of the school and all it stands for, perhaps summed up best by the school motto – good results, good manners and good fun.

Our extra-curricular clubs offer a lively balance of sport, performing and creative arts, science and technology, journalism, problem-solving and debating. The vast majority of girls take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme from Year 10 and the school is involved in charitable activities in the wider community. We pride ourselves on our pastoral care. The sense of being part of an extended family is frequently commented on by pupils, parents and staff alike. LOCHINVER HOUSE PREPARATORY SCHOOL The Lochinver journey typically starts at the age of 4 with boys joining one of our two Reception classes. From the word go, boys receive specialist teaching in PE, ICT and Music and this means they also benefit from the school’s extensive facilities and expertise. As boys continue their educational journey through Lochinver they have the use of our Astroturf, sports fields, an ecology garden, science and language laboratories, and our newly completed DT and ICT suite. A range of languages are taught and there is a comprehensive choice of activities after school where boys can get involved in any number of new experiences, or play for one of the numerous school teams. Music and drama play a large part in Lochinver life, from singing in one of the choirs, learning to play an instrument, or taking part in concerts, or productions. Throughout their time at Lochinver boys make forays into the big wide world, from day visits to and longer periods of time as they rise further up the school. Such experiences include visits to France, kayaking in the Ardeche, studying Classics in Italy, Skiing, joining a bushcraft adventure, or playing rugby in South Africa. Lochinver offers boys a full and rounded education,

encompassing challenges and opportunities in every area – academic, sporting, creative, technological and outward bound. We want boys to grow up to be kind and thoughtful individuals who are willing to take a lead and be supportive of others. Close communication is maintained with parents to ensure the very best advantage for every boy on his individual learning journey.

Why not come and see all the opportunities we have to offer. Contact our registrar Anne Meir on 01707 620036 or email registrar@ lochinverhouse.herts.sch.uk

MORE THAN JUST A TRIP School trips are now part and parcel of a child's educational package from year 2 upwards. So what should they provide? By Mr Andy Williams, Deputy Head at Aldenham.

Primarily a valuable first hand, safe and secure educational experience. The essential and humbling year 9 battle fields trip to Belgium, the strenuous D of E expedition to the Peak District, the enlightening year 10 language exchange to Germany, the exhilarating business studies visit to New York or the opportunity to compete in International sporting fixtures on an overseas tour provide individual educational experiences but beneath the surface of the curriculum lie perhaps more significant hidden social and developmental benefits. All such trips help develop three essential characteristics in young people - those of independence, resilience and socialisation. For younger children, even 48 hours of being independent can make a difference. Technology savvy 11 year olds may find themselves planning a week in York without packing electronic media and having to limit their possessions to one small rucksack for all eventualities. School trips present new situations, different environments and unfamiliar conditions. Children may have to be robust in learning to interact with other groups of peers, complete tasks together and look out for each other’s well being. The ability to get on with those around you for 24 hours a day and to take the needs of others into consideration are life skills that will serve young people well as they embark on courses and careers in which they cannot necessarily choose their colleagues. Well organised school trips will inevitably lead children to spend time out of their comfort zone - this may be as simple as having to share a room, to be prepared to eat different food (or go hungry), to live according to the group

routine. While this may sound unappealing to some it is exactly this group experience which makes school trips so valuable and often so memorable to children as they learn to adapt their behaviour away from the influence and input of parents. School trips above all offer new and different experiences - this could range from spending a few days on the Isle of Wight at the end of year 3 or spending three weeks in Malawi providing a hand up to a local community contributing to ongoing aid work in year 12. During my time at Aldenham School I have been privileged enough to accompany two groups of Sixth Form students to Malawi as part of an established project which is now in its sixth year, providing support to a community living on the banks of Lake Malawi. At this age students are not only responsible for brushing their own teeth and tying their own shoe laces but also for personally raising ÂŁ1,000 for the charity in order to qualify for a place on the team. I have certainly seen pupils benefit greatly from this opportunity and grow in terms of their personal awareness, maturity and understanding of their place in the world after they return from this life changing opportunity. The young travellers will hopefully take away with them more than just a collection of memories and some photographs, but they will also become more active and reflective participants in later life, when it comes to considering the needs of others in a global society.

All such trips help develop three essential characteristics in young people - those of independence, resilience and socialisation.

So if you are planning your next family holiday think also about the multiple benefits of letting someone else look after your children for a few days as part of a school trip, with the added bonus of allowing exhausted parents to enjoy a few nights alone without the children! SEPTEMBER 2014 59

While striving for academic excellence the College realises that it is whole-person education that best prepares boys for the world, recognising that moral and spiritual qualities are essential in achieving roundness of character. In addition to the curriculum, there is an extensive Extra and Extended Curriculum ranging from the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Combined Cadet Force to Young Enterprise. These activities develop qualities of self-knowledge, teamwork, leadership and resilience. The College regularly wins trophies for rugby, athletics, basketball and other sports. There is a strong tradition of music, drama and public speaking with regular concerts and drama productions. Debating is very strong and the College recently won the county final of the ESU Mace.

creating a stimulating happy environment in which boys thrive and learn, building firm foundations for confident sociallyskilled pupils. The community is vibrant and the students are the best evidence of what a Columban education can produce. Academic performance is good, with boys winning scholarships every year; all are challenged from the earliest stages to ‘achieve their own best standard’. There is a high teacher to pupil ratio, and teaching assistants help throughout the school. The College is proud of its strong reputation for pastoral care and both the Prep and Senior Schools have a well-developed house system, forging positive relationships and encouraging healthy competition.

There are regular Open Days throughout the year – please browse the website and book an individual tour of the College with one of the boys: www.stcolumbascollege.org

The role of exams in

EDUCATION

by Dr Short, Headmistress of St Helen’s School

A

t this time of year, the press is full of news stories about exam results and for those families with children who are at the age when external exams are on the horizon it can seem as if exam success is the sole purpose of education. Exam qualifications matter enormously and they provide the key which can open the door to the best university courses and access to the most highly sought - after professions. Fortunately, however, exams do not dominate the school year. Most academically selective schools choose to limit the use of exams and avoid publishing class lists because students are sufficiently ambitious and self-motivated to do well without this additional pressure. We also seek to keep exams in proportion because we believe strongly that exams are not the point of education or the point of schools. In a recent assembly I illustrated this by encouraging the girls to think of education as being like a very broad highway. We might move fast along the highway or we might move at a slightly more sedate pace but we are all moving in one direction and we are moving with purpose and speed.

62 SEPTEMBER 2014

No one is going backwards! The direction we are all travelling in is that of intellectual growth, independent thinking, and development of the whole person whilst pursuing our passions and allowing our curiosity a free rein. Exams are not part of this great highway. Exams are a process, and a very necessary one, but they are not the purpose of education or of schools. Exams are like a narrow track running alongside the highway which, once a year, students have to join for a few weeks and along which there are obstacles and potholes and hurdles. We teach them how to negotiate these and we do practice runs before they get to the ones which will have an importance throughout their life. We teach the skills needed to overcome the obstacles, we advise students how to negotiate potholes successfully. We want our students to do well as they travel along these tracks because the results will determine their future choices in life. Exams also equip them with skills which will be enormously helpful to them in later life: how to work efficiently under timed conditions

and on their own; how to plan a concise and focussed response; how to use evidence to support an argument; how to control rising panic when faced by something really difficult; and how to shut out the world in order to concentrate on one thing. It is important that we all keep a balanced view of the purpose of exams. Outstanding schools are not

rich and challenging co-curricular programme which independent schools provide plays a key role in developing the resilience, curiosity, and ambition which will mark our pupils out as the leaders in their professions and communities. At St Helen’s we are very excited to be launching this year the ‘Futures Programme’ which will greatly enhance the girls’ preparation for life beyond the classroom.

To provide students with the opportunities to grow and to develop into the most extraordinary young people... exam factories: it would be much easier to run an exam factory than an exceptional school but it would be quite horrid to do it and it would not prepare students for the next stages of their education where they will increasingly need to apply their knowledge, to function in the world and to use their knowledge and skills in new situations. It is not only through a much broader academic education that we are able to prepare our students for the next stages: the

What are schools really here for? To provide students with the opportunities to grow and to develop into the most extraordinary young people who can use their talents to the benefit of others, who can contribute to the greater good, who can lead and be team members, who can use their exceptional understanding of other people to enable everyone to make progress and to grow.

The future remains bright at

EDGE GROVE The future continues to shine brightly at Edge Grove as it embarks on the new academic year in September. With its dynamic and inspirational Headmaster, Ben Evans, now looking forward to his third year in post, the school has grown dramatically and the pupil roll will be larger than ever before in the school’s history. Edge Grove continues to be a unique ‘hidden gem’ of a school amongst a plethora of prep schools in Hertfordshire. It is a place where the best traditions are preserved whilst being forward thinking, progressive and always embracing new technologies and habits. Edge Grove offers its pupils an imaginative curriculum designed to encourage and inspire collaborative working and critical thinking. Last year the school introduced the Independent Curriculum, providing essential academic rigour to the teaching and learning whilst ensuring that lessons are creative, innovative and exciting. This year the International Primary Curriculum will be introduced in the Pre Prep from Nursery to Year 2. This will provide

depth, creativity and a rich crosscurricular programme designed to excite and inspire pupils as well as prepare them for Year 3. Pupils are encouraged to be articulate, endlessly curious about their learning and always ready to ask ‘why?’ They approach their learning with tenacity, resilience and a ‘can do’ attitude. They make good progress because they are not afraid to ask and try new things because they are not afraid to fail.

be extended next year with the addition of Graphic Design and design and technology taught from Year 3. iPads are already used throughout the school and now it is introducing a dedicated virtual language lab facility in the new language classroom.

All the Year 8 pupils last year celebrated successfully passing their CE exams and secured places at their first choice schools, with one pupil being awarded a prestigious Scholarship to Winchester College, offered to only 14 pupils in the country. Equally the Year 6 leavers were vigorously prepared for their 11+ exams and are moving on to a wide range of top local and national senior schools.

Sport continues to thrive at Edge Grove. The recent cricket tour to Sri Lanka was a wonderful opportunity for a group of boys to enjoy some first class sporting action as well as experience the sights and sounds of a developing country and a very different culture to their own. The school looks forward to the girls enjoying a similar opportunity on their forthcoming netball tour to St Vincent.

Edge Grove looks forward to welcoming prospective parents to visit the school, meet Ben Evans, and find out more about it. The next Open Day is on Saturday 11th October 2014 at 10am – 12pm.

The centrality of Classic BY PHILIP HARRISON, HEAD OF CLASSICS AT MERCHANT TAYLOR’S SCHOOL

B

ewilderment and amusement are common reactions when parents and pupils are informed that Latin is compulsory for the first three years at the school. There is often the same tone when a parent informs me, a few months into the academic year, that his or her son is actually enjoying Latin. How and why, seems to be the hint, is my son enjoying a dead language that is associated with gowns, mortarboards, and dusty old books? The world of beginners’ Latin therefore confounds expectations: for a start, there are colour textbooks, which introduce the language along with accounts of everyday life in Pompeii, and which challenge pupils to think not only about the workings of the language, but also about the Roman world in which it was spoken. Pupils follow stories set in a different area of the Roman Empire each year, and meet the language en route. And yes, many do continue to enjoy it: at Merchant Taylors’, almost half the boys continue to GCSE, and sixth form numbers are strong. The study for GCSE and A level is focused on literature, so pupils encounter Cicero, Virgil, and Tacitus amongst others. Classical study is not restricted to Latin. At Merchant Taylors’ we are fortunate to have an exceptionally large department and pupils can choose to study Classical Greek as early as year 9: this stimulates and stretches bright boys and allows them access to the canon of Greek epic and tragedy. Greek inevitably has always been a minority subject, yet it survives, and the question is begged: why do schools continue to offer a subject such as Greek, when the numbers can be very small?

Several factors need to be borne in mind when answering this question. It is a fact that schools such as Merchant Taylors’ – in fact any school founded during or before the 16th century – were founded with the express intention of teaching Latin and Greek, since the cultures of Greece and Rome were seen as the foundation of Western culture. It is difficult even nowadays to argue against the unparalleled significance of Greece and Rome in the formation of Western literature, philosophy, and political structures, and so the exploration of these cultures remains entirely. Furthermore, the subjects offer very clear intellectual rigour and stimulation: aside from mastering the languages, which work very differently from English, pupils are challenged to analyse with logical rigour and become familiar with some of the greatest poetry and historical writing of all time. 66 SEPTEMBER 2014

In these ways, the study of the Classical world equips pupils with not only intellectual knowledge but also intellectual skills that will prove beneficial to later life. When studying a text, they are urged to analyse every word, to seek flaws in an argument, to look at detail while remaining aware of the bigger picture. For these reasons, Classicists – and this surprises many parents – are much valued in a wide range of careers, where their intellectual skills are allowed to flourish. At this point in conversation, I am forced to admit that whereas I may be using both the knowledge and skills learned from Classics in the course of my own job, there are plenty of Classicists who deploy their skills in the Square Mile, and the worlds of Law, journalism, and so on. For some graduates, such as our Old Boy novelist Conn Iggulden, they provide a rich vein for contemporary fiction. All this gives the lie to specious, facile notions of ‘relevance’: young minds are endlessly fertile and subjects that may superficially appear ‘old hat’ may, in fact, prove to be inspirational to the keenest of intelligences. Above all, in a world dominated by the superficialities of League Tables and ‘attainment objectives’ they come to realise that the intellectual value of the Socratic tradition lies not only in the interrogation of concepts, but also in acquiring the most important knowledge of all: self-knowledge. What then is the condition of Classics in schools today? Mary Beard and Boris Johnson promote the subject with vigour in the media, while Michael Gove has made clear his desire for Classics to be taught more widely in state schools – of which very few now have the resources to support large Classics departments – and has set about training non-Classicists to teach Latin at beginners’ level. This is obviously welcome news for any Classicist who is eager that the subject should be widely accessible and enjoyed. However, real challenges lie beyond the soundbites. What seems to be suggested is a curriculum where Classics is a desirable extra, rather than a vital part of the curriculum for all pupils, as it has been at a school such as Merchant Taylors’ for almost five hundred years. The programme that is being launched to train non-specialists to teach Latin is admirable, but it is surely uncontroversial to claim that for a subject to flourish, a school needs teachers who are expert in the field, and who can bring the enthusiasm and learning of many years of study into lessons. This certainly is the case in schools where the central importance of Classics to a school syllabus is recognized and celebrated.

THE HABERDASHERS’ ASKE’S SCHOOLS EXCELLENCE IN MUSIC The Haberdashers' Aske's Schools (Elstree), placed 'side by side for excellence', enjoy the best in school education. On adjoining sites in 100 plus acres of secure grounds, they are two, single-sex, independent day schools whose pupils benefit greatly from a vast range of social and educational opportunities. The academic reputation of the two schools is well known: they are firmly established in the ’premier league’ of annually published league tables, a remarkable achievement in itself. The vast majority of Haberdashers students go to their first choice university, exceptionally high numbers to Oxford and Cambridge, and many achieve national academic distinction during their time at school. The Habs style is to love learning and to enjoy the academic opportunities alongside a huge wealth of extra-curricular activity. In both schools the range of the non-academic curriculum is enormous and the level of participation by pupils very high. Sport, music, theatre, art, service in the community, partnerships with local state schools, debating, public speaking, society meetings, fund-raising initiatives, outward bound and adventurous training activities, and every type of leadership and resourcefulness opportunities are all regular features of the termly routine. 72 SEPTEMBER 2014

Advertorial feature music tours are a feature of the school year previous destinations having included Salzburg, Lake Garda and Barcelona - and major concerts have previously been held at the Royal Festival Hall, St Martin-in-the-Fields, St John’s Smith Square and St Albans Cathedral. Over 100 different extra-curricular musical activities are offered across both the Senior and Junior Departments. Over 60 specialist visiting music teachers offer in excess of 1,100 instrumental lessons per week. Academic music flourishes, with healthy numbers choosing to study music for GCSE and A Level, and excellent grades are achieved at both. Every year students continue to apply to study for a degree in Music at university, with recent destinations including Cambridge, Durham, Leeds, Manchester, Oxford, The Royal Northern College of Music and Trinity Laban.

Both schools have a long tradition of excellence in Music, aided by excellent purposebuilt facilities that make the vibrant combination of large group rehearsals, concerts, small recitals, individual lessons and practice possible. Both schools foster a welcoming, inclusive musical atmosphere that encourages and praises music at all levels, with a strong emphasis on personal creativity. Opportunities for pupils at all levels to play in both large and small ensembles are plentiful and are greatly appreciated by pupils, which is illustrated by the high participation.

Music scholarships and bursaries are offered to children who demonstrate advanced musical skills and/or potential for further development. There are a number of financial awards available, from a Music Scholarship, to awards of free tuition on individual instruments where great promise has been shown. For further information, please contact the schools directly.

Through the evening the choirs were accompanied by Habs old girl soprano Olivia Clarke, now a professional singer. Selections from the concert are available to watch on Youtube at www.bit.ly/UFAOQE. Regular concerts at both schools provide musicians with opportunities to perform – everything from annual Autumn, Spring and Summer concerts and weekly lunchtime recitals to ‘Battle of the Bands’ and ‘Unplugged’ on the Boys’ School Quad. nti-ageing isn’t just down to gene pools and preventative potions. Everyday skincare sins could be interfering with your war against wrinkles without you even knowing. Just 16% of women embrace ageing, according to a recent UK Confidence Index by L’Oreal. After grey hair, wrinkles and dark under-eye circles came top in a list of the physical factors that make women feel less confident. “Doing the wrong things can speed up your skin’s ageing process, and you might be surprised at what some of those no-nos are,” says American dermatologist Dr Tess Mauricio. Almost a fifth of British women (19%) are spending more than £10 a month on brow maintenance, according to a recent survey by QVC to mark the exclusive launch of Benefit Gimme Brow Gel. Repeatedly losing and gaining weight can take its toll on your face’s elasticity, leaving behind jowls and sagging. Mauricio says: “Packing on pounds can make your skin look plumper on the surface, but carrying excess weight can cause your body’s levels of insulin and cortisol to rise, which can break down collagen. “You’ll see increased sagging from putting on and keeping on as little as 10-15 extra pounds, and loss of facial fat can cause sagging and a gaunt, aged appearance.” Maintain a healthy weight with proper diet and exercise, aiming to keep your weight in the ‘normal’ range, with a body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 24.9. H E A LT H & B E AU T Y So, in 2011, Galderma invited Dr Ravi Jain of Riverbanks Clinic to devise a programme whereby aesthetic patients would be much more involved in their consultations with their aesthetic doctor. This would help the doctor understand the patient’s needs and so be able to recommend a choice of treatments better suited to each individual patient. This innovative programme was called the Harmony Approach and in January this year Dr Jain presented the concept to thousands of aesthetic doctors at a worldwide convention in Paris. The reception was overwhelming and since then Dr Jain has launched the Harmony Approach to Australia and New Zealand, Dubai, Spain, France, UK, Belgium, Holland, China, Singapore, Hong Kong & Taiwan! Yes, it’s been a very busy year for him!!!

Look theway youfeel with the Harmony Approach at Riverbanks Clinic

O

ne of the most frequent complaints that patients have when they see their doctor is that they feel that the doctor isn’t actually listening to them, nor taking on board their concerns. As a result the consultations are incomplete and the prescribed treatment may be inappropriate. A survey of 12,500 people was carried out across Europe by dermatology specialist pharmaceutical giant, Galderma, which showed this opinion was very similar in aesthetic medicine.

82 SEPTEMBER 2014

both you and your doctor identify the areas which need more attention. 3. Treatment Plan Once these areas have been identified a few treatment options will be explained to you with guide budgets over the next year or two. A timetable of any proposed treatments can then be agreed. Or, if you are nervous, we will give you a copy of the plan so that you can go home and ponder these options in your own time. Aesthetic treatments are not one-offs. Many of our patients have been with us for over 7 years and they look younger today than they did when they first started! That’s because they have invested in subtle skin maintenance plans which discreetly treat the signs of ageing so after each treatment they look that little bit fresher and after a while it all adds up to significant improvements!

Dr Jain explains, “The key to The Harmony Programme is that it is for people who don’t want to look different, they just want to look how they feel. It’s about natural looking tweaks and adjustments that restore facial balance and enhance the appearance rather than altering it.”

4. Follow-up & Maintenance We always follow-up our patients after a new treatment. This is usually one month later but can be at any time earlier if the patient is particularly concerned about anything.

So what’s involved with a Harmony Consultation?

Initially, the programme was designed just for anti-ageing treatments with dermal fillers and botulinum toxin. These are excellent, natural looking solutions for correcting lines and wrinkles as well as sagging and hollowness of cheeks or thin lips. However, at Riverbanks we have extended its use to cover all of our treatments including solutions for facial threadveins, roseaca, sun damage, pigmentation, skin peels, acne and acne scarring. Dr Jain has trained our experienced medical aestheticians to use the Harmony Approach in all their consultations so that they can fully understand their patients’ needs as well.

Well, first of all, only the best aesthetic clinics have been chosen to use Harmony. At Riverbanks Dr Jain has been using the the Harmony Approach on all of his new patients since early 2013 and the feedback has been extremely favourable. 100% of patients were satisfied with their consultations using this novel method. They all felt much more involved in their treatment plan and they all felt that their doctor listened to them and was careful and attentive to their needs. The treatments they received were all carefully explained and they fully understood their treatment plans for the following twelve months which they found extremely beneficial as it helped them plan their skin care.

The Harmony Consultation involves 4 steps: 1. Questionnaire This is a brief questionnaire for you to complete when you arrive at Riverbanks Clinic. The purpose is to identify any previous treatments you may have had and also to identify the reasons why you are seeking an aesthetic treatment at this moment. This is fundamental to the whole process and it allows the specialist to understand your motivations and goals of your visit. 2. Skin Assessment Once your motivations have been understood your skin will be analysed by the doctor but he will also want your input in what you think about your skin too. The findings will be charted and this will help

VARICOSE VEINS Michael Gaunt is a specialist consultant with over 25 years’ experience tackling varicose veins. He has warned against the dangers of ignoring the problems – or viewing them as primarily a cosmetic concern. With clinics specialising in treating varicose and thread veins in Harley Street, London, Cambridge, Norwich and Bury St. Edmunds, Mr. Gaunt has treated more than 4,000 patients and he outlines the dangers of dismissing potential problems which could ultimately lead to a host of complications including veins bursting, clotting or even deep vein thrombosis. He said: “Varicose veins are often considered a cosmetic condition but if neglected, they can result in complications. “Fortunately, most modern techniques for treating varicose veins are associated with very good long-term results. “Minimally invasive local anaesthetic procedures can be used to treat varicose veins on a walk-in, walk-out basis. “This leaves the patient with minimal pain following the procedure, with practically an immediate return to normal activity.” Specialising in both the Endovenous Laser and Clarivein techniques, Mr Gaunt has built up a reputation as one of the country’s eminent venous experts. The treatments he offers include foam sclerotherapy,

Endovenous Laser, VNUS and Clarivein – the proven technique from the USA where a chemical is sprayed into the vein, sealing it and preventing the varicose vein from reappearing. In his three decades working on varicose veins, Mr Gaunt is only too aware that one of the biggest problems is one of ignorance. He explained: “At least 20% of the adult population suffer with some form of varicose veins. While in the developing stages problems may be cosmetic, they can lead to far bigger concerns if left untreated. “The condition can deteriorate and a variety of complications may occur, ranging from leg swelling, ulcers and pigmentation of the skin around the ankles. “There are occasions when veins can burst causing bleeding, or the blood within the veins can clot leading to painful inflammation known as phlebitis.” “Varicose veins can affect men just as much as they can affect women. Men tend to cover their legs up more, so the problem may be hidden away and ignored; with some men only seeking treatment when their veins become very large and complications start to occur. “It is important to target varicose veins before they become a significant problem, as without medical treatment varicose veins always deteriorate, sometimes suddenly, and complications may have a major impact on daily activities.” For those wanting to discover more, or who may be worried about potential problems, Mr Gaunt offers mini-consultations to perform an initial assessment and discuss potential treatments. Dive Into Nature WITH A NATURAL SWIMMING POND

“It’s an immaculate temperature, that’s the first thing. And it doesn’t feel like swimming anywhere else, it doesn’t feel like the sea, it doesn’t feel like a salt water pool, it feels incredibly fresh,” says Matthew Van Grutten, one of the visitors at a recent swimming pond open day. “It’s a very special feeling. Overall, an immaculate experience.” “It feels so clean,” agrees Wendy Smith, another visitor at the open day. “It’s like having a really nice bath.” “The water’s lovely, really crystal clear,” says Chris Graham, swimming pond owner in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire, where Gartenart hold an open day every year. “You could read a book on the bottom if you threw it down there.” Swimming ponds - or natural swimming pools (the terms mean the same) have been growing in popularity in the UK for several years now, particularly in those locations where maintaining the natural outlook is of prime importance. “I wanted to be able to sit and look out from the garden and see nothing unnatural,” says Sacha Cole, whose swimming pond was installed in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. “I wanted the pond to be part of a view that flowed seamlessly from the garden to the countryside beyond... I love the natural beauty of it, the way it grows and becomes part of the garden.” But how can what is essentially a wildlife pond actually stay clean? “A swimming pond works by keeping the nutrient level in the water very low,” explains Tim Evans, managing director of Gartenart, who have built over one hundred swimming ponds in the UK in the last ten years. “Under these conditions water naturally stays clean and clear, like a lake you may

PRINCES RISBOROUGH

KINGS LANGLEY

come across in the mountains. The water there is clear and even drinkable, not because of the temperature, but because there is very little nutrient input. The natural microscopic processes in the water then remain in balance, and the result is clear and healthy water.” This is unlike the water in most wildlife ponds we see around us, which as we well know, is usually not something you would want to dive into. The reason for this is that the nutrient level in these ponds is invariably very high, with run-off from roads, fields, and decomposing organic matter from leaves and other plant life. A swimming pond is set up to minimise this input of nutrients, and the water in the pond is also circulated internally to reduce the nutrient level further still. How about temperature? Surely it’s just too cold to swim regularly in unheated water in this country? Well, apparently not, according to swimming pond owners, with most reporting temperatures of 22-24 degrees throughout the summer and even up to 26-27 degrees in warm periods, due to the shallow planting areas heating up quickly in the sun. It is, however, possible to add heating if you wish. The other common question is around costs. A swimming pond starts from £70,000 incl VAT for a naturally designed pond, and most domestic-sized swimming ponds suitable for family use cost between £80-£100,000 incl VAT. Features such as heating, tiling etc, of course add to this. For more details please visit www.gartenart.co.uk or call 020 7183 3333

THE ULTIMATE FLOORING GUIDE WITH FISHPOOLS When it comes to planning a new décor scheme, or even updating an old one, laying out the foundations of your overall look is key to its success. Flooring can often get overlooked with many of us turning our attention to colour schemes and home accessories. Get it right, and your flooring will have a huge impact on the look, feel and function of a room, not just from a decorative perspective but from a practical one too.

Whether you’re completely renovating your home or simply updating your décor scheme, our easy guide to flooring below is full of advice, tips, tricks and trends to help you find your perfect option: FABULOUS AND FUNCTIONAL CARPETS With hundreds of options available, from popular twists to plush velvets, it’s important to consider how you want your carpet to function. For areas in constant use, such as living rooms or hallways, a more durable option made from twisted or looped fibres, such as Fishpools’ Blenheim is a great choice, especially for family homes. For rooms with a lower footfall such as bedrooms, carpets with a deeper pile are the perfect option. With many of the velvet cut pile styles available with beautiful finishes, they’ll add a luxurious touch to your space. The colour and pattern of your carpet should also be taken into consideration. Neutral shades such as cream or taupe are an ideal way to establish an elegant base palette and will automatically make a room appear larger. For a bold statement, patterned carpets will breathe life into a space and help to set up a theme around which you can build the rest of your décor scheme.

HAVE FUN WITH VERSATILE VINYL Vinyl is not only seriously hardwearing but great for rooms which are exposed to water or spillages such as kitchens or bathrooms. As well as being budget-friendly and easy to clean, one of the best things about vinyl is the variety of styles and patterns that are available. From rustic-cut countrystyle stone to elegant parquet effect designs, there are so many options to choose from allowing you to easily tailor your floor to any scheme. Preparation is key when it comes to laying vinyl, so do make sure the concrete underneath has been smoothed and levelled. This will prevent any un-even lumps and ensure that it doesn’t buckle in the heat.

than oiled ones, which for a room such as the kitchen is perfect. Oiled finishes offer a look that’s much more natural but these will need to be regularly maintained.

FINISHING TOUCHES – RUGS! Rugs will add the perfect finishing touch to your floor. Available in a huge variety of colours, patterns and sizes, they’re not only versatile but a great way to add warmth, texture and a pop of colour to your room. For open plan or large rooms, small rugs are perfect for breaking up the space by creating ‘zones’ or focal points. Alternatively, if space is limited, a single large rug will help to give an impression of space. If you’re feeling bold, a brightly patterned rug such as those in Fishpools’ Matrix Max collection, will instantly inject a little pazazz and can be used to complement other accents within the room. Geometrics are on-trend and will work well with a contemporary décor scheme, whereas stripes, though more traditional, will instantly elongate smaller spaces.

INVEST IN ELEGANT HARD FLOORING Rich and elegant, hardwood flooring will immediately transform a room and is a versatile option which will last for years to come. Much like carpets, when it comes to choosing a wooden floor, bear in mind how you will use your space and require your flooring to function. Different woods will vary in terms of their hardness and stability and depending on the finish used their level of water-resistance. Walnut and mahogany are some of the hardest woods on offer so are perfect for busy spaces. Oak is incredibly stable and therefore less likely to change shape when exposed to heat and moisture. In terms of finish, lacquered woods are generally much more water-resistant 94 SEPTEMBER 2014

Zuzana Philip INTERIOR DESIGN North London based Interior Designer Zuzana Philip started her journey back in her home country Slovakia where she studied art and textile design. After being “discovered” by a leading modelling agency she spent the new few years as a fashion model and moved to London in 1999 where there was strong demand for new faces on the London fashion scene. At that stage Slovakia was not in the EU and work proved a problem without the necessary permits. However her ambitions always lay in design and her love of beautiful fabrics. Having graduated from the respected KLC School of design in Chelsea Harbour with honours, Zuzana began working on small projects but as word spread, more demanding projects followed both in London and her native Slovakia. An exclusive project was recently completed at a prestigious property in Totteridge. As Zuzana explained “The property was in a beautiful position but looked tired and needed upgrading. The existing conservatory lacked any kind of insulation and was too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter so it became dead space for most of the year. The original décor was full of built in furniture with heavy curtains making the space very dark and dated.” To make the most of the stunning views, Zuzana worked with the client to design a contemporary extension that opened up the space and integrated with the new open plan kitchen. The full width glass sliding doors open onto the new patio area on the same level so there is a seamless transition from inside to the

garden and the magnificent views over the greenbelt land. “I try to advise clients that neutrals never date and that by adding splashes of colour with the accessories they can refresh the look from time to time without spending a fortune - it is easier to change a cushion or a throw than to redecorate!” Warm, grey wide plank oak floors were chosen to compliment the furniture and create very calm, stylish and sophisticated space for the whole family to use. Additional bespoke made furniture added to the overall effect of creating a unique space. Lighting is an area that Zuzana pays special attention to. “You can buy the best of everything and kill the whole effect by bad lighting – I love recessed lighting that creates a warm glow”. The old kitchen was functional but cramped and needed “opening up.” The design of the new kitchen resulted in a sleek streamlined space with a number of lighting options. “I pay great attention to every detail, if natural materials such as granite or marble are being used I handpick each slab to make sure the graining is consistent and compliment each other. The same applies to furniture and veneers and so on – it’s all about the detail!” Zuzana has clear views on the current state of the London property market. “Your home is probably your best long term investment so don’t move – improve!” Zuzana lives with her husband and two daughters in North London.

30 YEARS

AND STILL GOING STRONG ! Flamingo Blinds and Awnings are recognised as one of the best established blind companies in London, having been fitting blinds around the London area since 1980. The company has almost certainly the largest range available of all it`s competitors, much of which is displayed in the Potters Bar showroom. On show are awnings from leading German awning manufacture Weinor, blinds from Luxaflex the world leader in innovative blind products, and Plantation Shutters from S-Craft. Luxaflex have recently launched 2 new ranges of shutters; Vinyl, which has a 25 year guarantee and a Faux wood range with 10 years , both of which have had phenomenal success. And curtains displayed using fabrics from many well know brands. The company still retains much of it`s domestic customer base, and has noticed over the last few months, confidence re-emerging in the housing market, where customers have been either refurbishing throughout , or moving into new homes. Without doubt, shutters are the `in` product currently, with the company`s growth this year being 65%. Over 3 decades Flamingo have built up a base of commercial customers, not only in the immediate area , but largely in Central London. These include 100 SEPTEMBER 2014

Estate Agents J.D Wood and Martyn Gerrard, Restaurant chains EAT and McDonalds, Google, and building contractors Wates and Mansell. Home Swap at Imperial Grove As a recent poll reveals that buying a house is labelled as one of life’s most stressful experiences1, Part Exchange is becoming an increasingly popular route for moving home. Whether a downsizer or young professional seeking the next pad, luxury developer, Banner Homes, is offering its Premier Part Exchange scheme at its sensational newly- dressed Penthouse, located at Imperial Grove, in Hadley Wood.

S

helley West, Sales Director for Banner Homes said, “Selling your home while trying to buy a new one can become a stressful process. Part Exchange helps remove the stress and hassle from the buyer as we exchange a previous home for a brand new one and tie together both completion dates. We then arrange for three valuations to be carried out on the previous home by independent estate agents and make an offer based on these valuations.”

A peaceful village ambience within minutes of the city, Hadley Wood is amongst the most highly desired and affluent neighbourhoods in the local area. It has long been a residential haven for celebrities who seek to escape the limelight. There are cricket, football and bowling clubs as well as angling on pretty Beech Hill Lake – all within walking distance of Imperial Grove. There are three golf clubs within the vicinity and one of the most popular country pubs is moments away on foot.

“We’re now offering Part Exchange on our exclusive Penthouse which provides the perfect swap for someone looking for a quick downsize or an alternative upgrade to a more spacious apartment.” Imperial Grove is a stylish new development consisting of a charming mews house, stunning two bed conversion apartments, new two and three bedroom apartments and a spacious six bedroom house. Located in Hadley Wood, the brand new gated the development sits on Camlet Way, one of the most desirable roads of the area.

Imperial Grove sits less than half a mile from Cockfosters Underground Station and a small parade of shops that provide for your everyday essentials including a Post Office, mini supermarket, newsagent and a bank. Hadley Wood Station is just a half a mile from the development, while the M25 and A1(M) are both within a 15 minute drive away. A diverse range of restaurants are scattered throughout the area, but the more concentrated and extensive centres for shopping and dining at Potters Bar and Barnet are easily accessible as well.

The last remaining home is the ‘The Penthouse’. Spanning 2,423 sq ft, the two/ three bedroom refurbished apartment is traditionally styled to blend with the original architecture and yet offer all the comforts of a modern and demanding lifestyle. Fully dressed as a new show home by renowned interior designers, Alexander James, it boasts many original features, including a professionally designed kitchen/breakfast room, separate sitting room with a feature fireplace and separate dining room (as an optional third bedroom). The two bedrooms come with a dressing room plus there are private outside terraces and a garden for residents to relax in. Further added luxuries include a separate study, laundry room and two parking spaces.

126 SEPTEMBER 2014

The Penthouse is priced at £1,525,000. The show home is opened Thursday to Monday from 10 am to 5pm. Please call the Sales Advisor on 0845 899 1328 or visit the website www.imperialgrove.co.uk. For further information about Banner Homes please visit www.bannerhomes.co.uk www.estatesdirect.com
