BANKSY’S CRUDE OIL (VETTRIANO)
Banksy work owned by Blink-182 star Mark Hoppus predicted to sell for up to £5m.
By Casey Cooper-Fiske
“We bought it because we loved it. It’s borne witness to our family over these past dozen years. It hung over the table in London where we ate breakfast and our son did his homework. It hung in our living room in Los Angeles.
“It’s seen laughter and tears and parties and arguments. Our son has grown up in front of it.
“This painting has meant so much to us and been such an amazing part of our lives, and now I’m excited for it to be out there in the world, seen by as many as possible. Go get ‘em, godspeed.”
Hoppus will use the proceeds from the sale to expand the family’s art collection by buying works by upcoming artists, while a portion of the funds will go to charities including the California Fire Foundation, which helps people impacted by wildfires around LA.
The singer added: “Coming back to punk rock, one aspect of the community I always hold dear is, if you get lucky enough to gain success, you bring your friends with you.
“Larger bands bring smaller bands on tour. We support one another from within.
“I want to take some of the money from the sale of this painting and use it to buy works from younger, upcoming artists.
“We were lucky enough to find Crude Oil (Vettriano) in our lives, and it’ll help us support more art and artists. I want to be a f****** Medici.”
The sale will also benefit Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and its Child Life Programme, and Cedars Sinai Haematology Oncology Research.
Hoppus was diagnosed with stage four diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in June 2021, but announced he was free of cancer in September that year after months of chemotherapy.
The Banksy work will headline Sotheby’s Modern And Contemporary Evening Auction on March 4 in London, and will go on display at Sotheby’s New York from February 18 to 20, before heading to London for the Sotheby’s preview exhibition from February 26 to the sale day.
The painting, which Hoppus said brought “joy and anger, and hope and scepticism”, was first exhibited in Banksy’s 2005 exhibition Crude Oils: A Gallery Of Re-Mixed Masterpieces, Vandalism And Vermin.
It is a reimagining of Jack Vettriano’s The Singing Butler, which was painted in 1992, to tackle environmental issues, pollution and capitalism, according to Sotheby’s experts.
The sale comes after Banksy’s Piranhas work was donated to the new London Museum site, which will open in Smithfield next year.
The graffitied police sentry box made headlines last summer when it appeared as part of the street artist’s animal-themed collection in the capital, which concluded with a gorilla appearing to lift up a shutter on the entrance to London Zoo.
Blink-182, formed in 1992 by Hoppus, guitarist and vocalist Tom DeLonge and drummer Travis Barker, came to define the pop punk genre, with hits such as What’s My Age Again? and All The Small Things. Hoppus will publish his memoir Fahrenheit-182 in April, detailing his life and career with the group.

T12 April 2025 – 16 November 2025
he V&A will stage the UK’s first major exhibition in almost 30 years dedicated to Cartier jewels and watches, exploring how the Maison became an unparalleled force in the jewellery and watch world.
Featuring more than 350 objects, the exhibition will chart the evolution of the house’s legacy of art, design and craftsmanship since the turn of the 20th century. It was at that point that the three grandsons of founder Louis-François set out to create the first globally recognised jewellery house, establishing branches in Paris, London and New York.
With an enviable client list of royalty and aristocracy, Cartier became known as ‘The Jeweller of Kings and the Kings of Jewellers’ and later broadened its appeal thanks to the devotion of leading creatives from the worlds of cinema, music and fashion.
The exhibition will include precious jewels and showstopping objects, historic gemstones, iconic watches and clocks from the V&A and Cartier Collection, as well as previously unseen drawings from the V&A and Cartier archives, together with works lent by His Majesty The King from the Royal Collection, major UK and international museums, and private collections.
Highlights will include:
• The Williamson Diamond brooch commissioned by Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 featuring the rare 23.6 carat pink Williamson diamond
• The Scroll Tiara commissioned in 1902 and worn to the coronation of Elizabeth II, and by Rihanna on the cover of W magazine in 2016
• A rose clip brooch (1938) worn by Princess Margaret at her sister’s coronation
• Grace Kelly’s engagement ring (1956), from the Monaco Princely Palace Collection, that she wore in her final film High Society (1956)
• A selection of Cartier timepieces that embody its unique and pioneering approach to watchmaking, including the Crash wristwatch, designed by Cartier London (1967)
Across three main sections the exhibition will explore the creativity of Cartier and the emergence of its signature style, the legacy of its technical ingenuity and craftsmanship, as well as its sophisticated approach to image-making and maintaining its legacy and relevance in a changing world.

Lichfield Garrick’s Acclaimed Production of FARM BOY
COMES TO BLACKHEATH HALLS
Lichfield Garrick Theatre brings its highly praised production of Farm Boy, adapted and directed by Daniel Buckroyd, to Blackheath Halls, London for a limited run on Saturday 5 – Sunday 6 April.
Based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, Farm Boy is a heartfelt and beautifully told story that follows a young boy’s visit to his grandfather’s farm in Devon. Through a series of compelling and touching stories, Grandpa recalls the past, including the heartbreak of World War I when his own father was forced to part with his beloved horse, Joey (War Horse). His tales transport audiences back in time, from the trenches of war to the arrival of the first tractor and an unforgettable ploughing match. But Grandpa also has a secret to share—one that will need his grandson’s help to put right.
Following critically acclaimed UK tours
and a celebrated run in New York, this enchanting stage adaptation captivates audiences once more. Farm Boy is the poignant and powerful sequel to Morpurgo’s War Horse, weaving together drama, storytelling, and original music to create an unforgettable familyfriendly theatrical experience.

THE WORLD OF TIM BURTON
Until 21 April 2025 at the Design Museum. In partnership with Harvey Nichols
PORTRAIT OF TIM BURTON
. PHOTOGRAPHER/ STEVE SCHOFIELD
The Design Museum has revealed for the first time the highlights of its major autumn exhibition on the exceptional career of director Tim Burton.
Visitors to the museum in west London are be invited to step into The World of Tim Burton and to journey through five remarkable decades of creativity. Today the famed and fascinating objects which will be seen are announced — from Tim Burton’s earliest unrealised projects to his most recent film, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024).
Over 600 incredible items have been brought together in the exhibition to chart the evolution of Burton’s unique design aesthetic. Objects are loaned from Tim Burton’s extensive personal archives, key film studio archives including Paramount, Amazon MGM Studios, and Warner Bros., and the private collections of Burton’s collaborators. Many items have never been on public display in the UK before.
Highlights include hundreds of Burton’s expressionistic sketches and drawings that he has created prolifically since childhood. These can be seen alongside props, set designs, and costumes from his iconic films, including Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman costume from 1992’s Batman Returns, and the black and white striped dress from 1999’s Sleepy Hollow, worn by Christina Ricci.
The World of Tim Burton showcases Burton’s remarkable output, with over 18 of his films individually spotlighted in the exhibition. It celebrates the creative processes behind some of the most significant movies of the past five decades, including Beetlejuice (1988), Batman (1989), Edward Scissorhands (1990), and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005).
The exhibition comes to London after a hugely successful decadelong world tour that has seen it visit 14 cities in 11 countries since 2014. Yet not only is this the first and only time it has been seen in the UK, it is also be the very final time the exhibition will be staged. For this very special homecoming – to Tim Burton’s adopted home city – it has been specially adapted, expanded, and physically reimagined for the Design Museum.
Visitors will for the first time can take a deeper look at the director’s work by seeing it through a design lens. With the addition of over 90 new objects to the exhibition, this iteration of the show examines Burton’s hands-on and designled approach to filmmaking.
A major aspect is the spotlighting of his long-term collaborations with designers working across costume, set and production design. This includes the renowned costume designer Colleen Atwood, production designer Rick Heinrichs, architect and designer Anton Furst, and the award-winning puppet makers and stop-motion animators Mackinnon and Saunders.
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH HARVEY NICHOLS
The World of Tim Burton is presented in partnership with Harvey Nichols. To celebrate the exhibition and its new partnership with the Design Museum, Harvey Nichols unveiled a Burtonesque Christmas window towards the end of last year. It featured five unique objects from Tim Burton’s private collection, previously showcased in his exhibitions around the globe. designmuseum.org @designmuseum

TATE MODERN TURNS
In May 2025, the world’s most popular museum of modern and contemporary art will be celebrating its 25th Birthday.
Everyone will be invited to a birthday celebration at Tate Modern from 9 -12 May. The gallery will be activated through the day and into the evening with live music and performance, pop-up talks and tours, a drop-in making studio as part of UNIQLO Tate Play, and special food and drink offers, all taking inspiration from Tate Modern’s free collection.
To coincide with the anniversary, a host of recent additions to Tate’s collection will go on display around the building, and some of the most iconic works from Tate Modern’s history will return. Louise Bourgeois’s giant bronze spider Maman will come home to the gallery. Standing 10 metres high, this monumental sculpture was
the first work to greet visitors when Tate Modern opened in 2000 and will be returning to the Turbine Hall for the first time in 25 years.
Maman will be the starting point from which to explore a new trail of 25 key works installed around Tate Modern. These will include other much-loved classics returning to the gallery, like Mark Rothko’s Seagram murals, which will be coming back from their current display at Tate St Ives, and Dorothea Tanning’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, returning from a major Surrealism exhibition in Paris. The trail will also highlight contemporary works involving film, music and performance, including an immersive multi-screen film installation by Nalini Malani and a series of live tarot readings staged as part of an installation by Meschac Gaba.
Two new free exhibitions will also open in time for the anniversary weekend, each showcasing the urgent issues and new ideas that artists are exploring today. A Year in Art: 2050 will explore how artists imagine possible futures, from Umberto Boccioni’s Futurist sculpture to a computer-generated animation by Ayoung Kim set in a futuristic version of Seoul.
Gathering Ground will feature international contemporary art united by a deep connection to land and community, often addressing the relationship between the ecological crisis and social injustice. It will include recent additions to Tate’s collection by artists including Outi Pieski, Carolina Caycedo and Edgar Calel, as well as a specially commissioned participatory installation by Abbas Zahedi.
Karin Hindsbo, Director of Tate Modern, said “Tate Modern has made an incredible impact in just 25 years. It has exploded the canon of art history, transformed the public’s relationship with contemporary art, and rewritten the rules for what an art museum can be. Our birthday weekend will be a wonderful chance to see what we do best and get a taste of where we’re going next – and all for free!”
When Tate first opened its doors to the public in 1897 it had just one site, displaying a small collection of British artworks. Today there are four major sites and the national collection of British art from 1500 to the present day and international modern and contemporary art, which includes nearly 70,000 artworks. In December 1992, the Tate Trustees announced their intention to create a separate gallery specifically for international modern and contemporary art in London. The former Bankside Power Station was selected as the new gallery site - designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott .(the mind behind the red London telephone box.)
St Paul’s and he simplified the building into the low horizontal profile with its single brick chimney that we know today – standing 99 metres tall, just lower than the dome of St Paul’s. Also, different to his other iconic power station in Battersea.
Now firmly part of the London skyline, Tate Modern’s chimney first appeared on the south side of the Thames in the early 1950s. In fact, when the new power station was first proposed in the 1940s, its situation directly opposite St Paul’s Cathedral caused concern that it might impose itself too much on the view. So Mr Gilbert Scott ensured the new power station did not compete with
Since it opened, it has become a London landmark, not just for the art it houses, but also for the architecture of the building itself. More than 40 million people have visited Tate Modern since May 2000. It is one of the UK’s top three tourist attractions and generates an estimated £100 million in economic benefits to London annually Also housing À la carte dining, a late-night bar and two separate members bars, all with stunning views of London. See some of the world’s most exciting modern and contemporary art at Tate Modern. Enjoy innovative works that have shaped art as we know it.

The most-eagerly anticipated restaurant awards in the annual calendar have been announced - Michelin has announced its 2025 restaurant selection, with a total of 1,147 restaurants, ranging in style from counter dining to country houses.
New Three Michelin Star Restaurant:
Moor Hall, Lancashire - Chef Mark Birchall and his team have continued to hone their craft and have now achieved new levels of excellence. The ingredients, many from the kitchen garden, are outstanding; the chefs’ culinary technique is hugely impressive; and the judgement of flavours, of when to prioritise simplicity and when to add complexity, is exemplary. The Inspectors particularly enjoyed the classically based turbot cooked in brown butter, with seasonal kuri squash and Mylor prawns.
New Two Michelin Star Restaurants:
Humble Chicken, Soho - while Chef-Owner Angelo Sato’s Japanese heritage provides the basis for this modern, upbeat izakaya, his creative streak ensures the theatrical tasting menu takes on a style all its own. Clever flavour and temperature combinations feature throughout, as do the kitchen’s immense precision and technical skill. Pumping music contributes to a great atmosphere, whilst sake ‘journeys’ are encouraged to add to the experience.
The Ritz Restaurant, St James’s - with its stunning Louis XVI decoration, there’s a flamboyancy in the delivery of the dishes that lives up to the surroundings. Equally impressive is the cooking itself, displaying balance, refinement and depth of flavour. You need only take one glance at the menu to see that classical French techniques and luxury ingredients both play a big role in proceedings. The sharing ‘Arts de la Table’ dishes allow the impeccable service team to keep the theatre of the gueridon trolley alive.
Hide & Fox, Saltwood - outside of London, near the Kent coast, duo Allister Barsby and Alice Bussi have added another chapter to their impressive story, earning Two Stars for neighbourhood restaurant Hide & Fox. Allister and the team’s cooking is packed full of delicious produce, cooked with due respect to deliver dishes that succeed on every level. The service is equally endearing, helping to create an experience that is a true delight.
New One Michelin Star Restaurants include: OMA, London SE1 - on the edge of Borough Market, OMA has
become The Guide’s first Greek restaurant to be awarded a Star in the UK and Ireland – thanks to lip-smackingly delicious dishes from Chef Jorge Paredes. This is the spot that the capital’s Hellenic food enthusiasts have been crying out for, with utterly delicious sharing dishes. The covered terrace overlooks Borough Market, the pacing from the kitchen is spot on and the list of coastal wines is great too.
AngloThai, Marylebone - ‘Rooted in Thailand, Uniquely British’ is the tagline of this joyfully run restaurant from John and Desiree Chantarasak – John is halfThai, half-British, a duality that informs his cuisine. The exemplary ingredients are sourced from across the UK, including from Desiree’s family’s farm. You can certainly expect more than British ingredients simply married with Thai flavours.
DOSA, Mandarin Oriental Mayfair - the restaurant Korean food enthusiasts have been waiting for. Served at a marble counter in the Two-Key Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, Jihun Kim’s cooking is luxurious and supremely skilful. It’s all executed with utmost skill and the mostly British produce is of superb quality. The chefs and well-versed service teamwork in impressive harmony and have a real desire for you to understand the cuisine, but most importantly to enjoy it.
Plates London, Hoxton - the first fully plant-based restaurant in the UK and Ireland to receive a MICHELIN Star. There’s an appropriately earthy, natural vibe to this elegant restaurant dedicated to promoting plant-based cuisine. Chef Kirk Haworth, who founded Plates with his sister Keeley – brings his strong classical technique to bear on inventive and inviting vegan dishes that give vegetables the respect they deserve.
Starling, Esher - the first solo project of Nick Beardshaw – who established his reputation working with Tom Kerridge – it’s a simple neighbourhood operation, but one with undoubtedly delicious food. While the menu consists of the kind of seemingly straightforward
dishes that are tricky to pull off yet so easy to eat. Nick’s signature dish of Orkney scallop with Thai green curry sauce is a prime example, the technical skill and balance of flavours shining through. Together with the restaurants which have maintained their distinction from last year, there are total of 181 One-MICHELINStar restaurants in the 2025 MICHELIN Guide selection for Great Britain & Ireland.

The first ever race took place in 1829 in Henley on Thames, a challenge between old school friends. The Women’s Boat Race first took place in 1927. The contest between two rowing crews from the UK’s two greatest universities, Oxford and Cambridge, now spans nearly 200 years of sporting rivalryand established itself as the epitome of amateur sport, raced by student athletes who combine academic rigour with elite physical prowess.
Since the second race in 1836, the contest has taken place in London and has become synonymous with British tradition and excellence, attracting global interest and offering an unrivalled educational experience to the student athletes who take part.
The Boat Race takes place on the famous Championship Course that stretches over 4.25 miles of tidal Thames in West London, between Putney and Mortlake.
The men’s and women’s top crews are known as the Blue Boats after the award their universities give them for competing in The Boat Race. Both universities have reserve crews. For the men, Oxford’s reserve boat is called Isis, Cambridge’s is called Goldie. The women’s reserve boats are called Osiris (Oxford) and Blondie (Cambridge).

THE PROVENCE ROSÉ REVOLUTION: APRÈS CHANGES THE GAME
Aquiet revolution is sweeping through the coastal elite this season. From London’s hotspots to Sandbanks’ waterfronts, Après Provence commands attention. Sun kissed in colour and housed in an elegantly etched bottle with a glass stopper, Après is quickly becoming the drink of choice for those who define trends.
“We created Après because we couldn’t find what we wanted,” explains one of the founders, Toby Irons, who along with business partners, James Calland, Tom Glanfield and (newly appointed ex sales director of Asahi), Andy Turley, are deeply connected to both Sandbanks’ vibrant social scene and the winemaking traditions of Provence, and saw an opportunity to reimagine rosé. “Traditional Provence rosés felt too formal. We wanted something with authentic quality that transitions from afternoon to evening—a wine for people who lean into life.”
What distinguishes Après is this dual identity: impeccable craftsmanship combined with unpretentious social energy. Their master winemaker at Château des Bertrands near SaintTropez blends Grenache Noir, Cinsault, and Syrah into a wine that balances refinement with accessibility. Its delicate hue and fruit-forward profile evolving into a dry, mineral-driven finish offers a bright, balanced experience that refreshes the palate, leaving you wanting more. This moreish character appeals equally to men and women—a significant achievement in a category that has struggled with gender neutrality.
The brand’s motto, “au soleil et à la neige” (in the sun and in the snow), reflects the transitional moments Après was designed for—from beach to terrace, slopes to chalet, exertion to relaxation. “We’re seeing tables order multiple bottles throughout an evening,” notes my server.
This isn’t a wine conceived in a boardroom but born from decades of summers in Provence combined with lived experience in the social heart of Sandbanks. The thoughtful design reflects a deep understanding of how people actually socialise—practical for boats, beaches, and vibrant gatherings.
As summer approaches, Après—truly a modern twist on rosé—appears poised for expansion along the “English Riviera.” This is a brand where luxury feels effortless, where you don’t have to try too hard—it just fits.

Embark on a grand European sojourn with PAVILIONS HOTELS
This exquisite journey through the continent’s most captivating cities promises a fusion of luxury, culture, and unparalleled hospitality.
Our odyssey begins in Amsterdam at The Toren, a welcome sanctuary of warmth and comfort amidst the city’s autumnal chill. Step into a world where oak-lined walls and plush velvet seating create an ambiance of the most intimate luxury. The pièce de résistance? The 17th century lounge ceiling fresco created by Rembrandt’s students. Each room at The Toren is a masterpiece of opulence, boasting gilded walls and sumptuous black granite bathrooms, complete with indulgent whirlpool baths.
As you navigate the iconic canal district, marvelling at the uniqueness of Amsterdam’s houses, standing tall like
some whimsical battalion overlooking the waters flowing by, the city unfolds before you, an inspiring tapestry of museums, cafés, and eclectic boutiques, each just a leisurely 20-minute stroll away from your hotel.
Our next port of call is Rome, the Eternal City, where The First, by The Pavilions presents a triptych of luxurious accommodation. At Musica, overlooking the timeless Tiber and Rome’s majestic skyline, modernity harmonises with antiquity. Rooms boast cutting-edge amenities, from motorised blinds to Bose speakers, while each floor pays homage to a different musical genre. As dusk falls, ascend to Alto for expertly crafted negronis and sublime Italian cuisine.
A short promenade away, Arte and Dolce await, each offering
its own flavour of effortless luxury. Recently refurbished Arte welcomes with sophisticated dark wood interiors and contemporary art, creating an ambiance of intimate refinement. True to its name, each floor showcases works by established Roman artists. Dolce, meanwhile, dazzles with bold sculptures and the inspirational Velo restaurant, where chairs resemble spun sugar confections, perfectly complementing the artisan pastries.
Craving pastoral serenity? The Château de Fiac in southwest France beckons. This restored 19thcentury marvel, set in a sleepy village, is a playful paradise where traditional and contemporary collide in delightful ways. Vibrant murals and cheeky artistic touches – such as the classically painted portrait of a woman clutching a packet of crisps – sets the tone for a stay both luxurious and light hearted. The château is also home to the first Revivo Spa outside Bali, offering signature treatments that transport you to the Far East.
Our final destination is Madrid’s Casa Almagro,
a haven of tranquillity in the chic Chamberi district. Here, Spanish artistry takes centre stage, from the striking gold column sculpture in the lobby to the carefully curated artworks adorning each room. The top floor boasts two rooms that can be combined into a spacious family suite, featuring a bespoke sofa that echoes Madrilenian architectural elements.
Throughout this grand tour, one constant remains - the unwavering commitment to five-star service that defines the Pavilions experience. In a world where the pace of life seems to accelerate relentlessly, these havens offer the ultimate luxury – a chance to pause, to appreciate, and to indulge in life’s finer moments.
Whether you’re drawn to Amsterdam’s canal-side charm, Rome’s eternal allure, the French countryside’s bucolic bliss, or Madrid’s artistic spirit, Pavilions Hotels & Resorts offer a quintet of experiences which cater to the most discerning of travellers. Each property is a celebration of its own locale, seamlessly blending into the fabric of its surroundings, while offering a distinctly luxurious experience.
As our journey concludes, we’re reminded that true luxury transcends mere opulence. It’s found in the warm welcome greeting you at each destination, the thoughtful touches anticipating your every need, and the moments of wonder as you discover each city anew. With Pavilions Hotels & Resorts, every stay becomes a chapter in your own European odyssey, filled with memories to cherish long after you’ve returned home. pavilionshotels.com

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS GUIDE
The finest independent schools in the UK

PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS
The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions
Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.
Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.
The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above –went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.
In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.
The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.
Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.
“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust.
“As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.
Gresham’s School
Gresham’s is an authentic boarding and day school providing a rounded education to boys and girls aged 2 to 18. Founded in 1555, the school has excellent facilities nestled in nearly 300 acres of countryside, just four miles from the breathtaking North Norfolk coast. Gresham’s provides a broad and enriching education, enabling pupils to discover their own talents and develop into confident, well-rounded individuals.

At the heart of Gresham’s Prep School is a commitment to nurturing both academic progress and personal happiness. With a well-balanced curriculum, complemented by extensive programmes in sports, music, drama, and other pursuits, pupils have ample opportunity to explore their interests, build strengths, and develop a deep appreciation for the world around them from an early age.
Gresham’s Prep School is relocating following a £35 million donation from the James Dyson Foundation. The new state-of-theart Prep school and restoration of the original Victorian building will include STEAM facilities, a music hall, sports pavilion, and ultra-modern classrooms. Set within 85 acres of ancient woodland, the new school will offer a nurturing environment where curiosity, creativity, and confidence can flourish.
Senior School
The Senior School is a supportive, vibrant, and dynamic community, ensuring that every pupil feels inspired, encouraged, and guided—both inside the classroom and beyond.

innovative centre for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education.
Sport has always been an integral part of education at Gresham’s. The school seeks to cultivate healthy and committed team players who understand the value of collaboration, leadership, and dedication. Rugby icon and alumnus, Ben Youngs, has recently been appointed as Head of Performance Sport, developing and leading the talented athlete development programme.

Rosemead celebrates new head ushering in the next chapter for the school
Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery is delighted to announce Rishi Boyjoonauth as the new Head, effective from September 2025.
This is his third headship, having been a principal of an academy in Kent and most recently Head of Prep at Farringtons School. Mr Boyjoonauth has a wide educational background, including teaching at university level and being a Director of Improvement for a large multi academy trust.
Speaking about his appointment, Mr
Boyjoonauth, said: ‘I am thrilled and delighted to be appointed as Head of Rosemead. I was attracted by the diverse and inclusive ethos of the school, child-centred focus, as well as the strong academic results. I was instantly struck by the friendly and welcoming staff, diligent atmosphere in the classrooms and the talented children at my interview; I was certainly put through my paces by the pupils during my interview! I can see that there is so much potential at Rosemead.’
Nick Hewlett, Head of St Dunstan’s Education Group, of which Rosemead is part, explained: ‘I am absolutely delighted that Mr Boyjoonauth has agreed to lead Rosemead into its next exciting chapter, and we welcome him onto the St Dunstan’s Executive Team. Mr Boyjoonauth is an outstanding educator and leader and at Rosemead he has the opportunity to further build on the extraordinary journey that has been undertaken in recent years, building a truly progressive curriculum, rooted within a unique culture and ethos, that chimes with the overarching vision of St Dunstan’s Education Group.’
Mr Boyjoonauth joins Rosemead at an exciting time for the Dulwich prep school. Last year, the school was awarded two prestigious awards. In November, Rosemead was awarded for Excellence and Innovation in Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion at the Independent
Schools Association (ISA) Awards. This followed an earlier award for Best EDIB (Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging) at the Education Choices Awards 2024.
Mr Boyjoonauth read Law at University College London and the University of Paris. Prior to entering the world of education, he practised as a solicitor in the City, specialising in Property Litigation. He holds the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) and has been admitted as a Fellow to the Chartered College of Teaching.
He also is a keen musician, playing the piano, flute and singing tenor in a prominent Chamber Choir. As a fluent French speaker, he was pleased to see that languages play a large part in Rosemead’s curriculum.
Mr Boyjoonauth added: ‘This is an extremely exciting time for the school, and I cannot wait to embark upon this journey to lead the school into its next phase of development. I look forward to meeting more of the pupils and parents in the not-too-distant future.’
Prospective families will have an opportunity to meet Mr Boyjoonauth and the rest of the leadership team at Rosemead’s next open morning on

ST DUNSTAN’S COLLEGE CORPS OF DRUMS PERFORM IN JOINT CONCERT TO RAISE MONEY FOR ROYAL BRITISH LEGION
St Dunstan’s College Corps of Drums was delighted to host a joint charity concert with the Central Band of the Royal British Legion on Saturday 8 February 2025.
The concert, held in the College’s magnificent Great Hall, was an outstanding success, bringing together talented musicians for an evening of celebration and fundraising in support of the Royal British Legion.
Speaking about the concert, Major Richard Davies said: ‘Thanks to the incredible generosity of attendees and supporters, we are delighted to announce that the concert raised an amazing £1,255.22 for the Royal British Legion.
‘These funds will go towards supporting veterans, serving personnel, and their families.’
Ahead of the concert, the Corps of Drums had been busy rehearsing for the special event. Major Davies added: ‘A special congratulations to Drum Major Marco and all the members of the Corps of Drums for their exceptional performance, which captivated the audience and showcased their
dedication and musical talent.
‘We also extend our sincere thanks to all the members of the Royal British Legion Band and the CCF staff who played a vital role in supporting this event. The evening was made even more special under the baton of Captain David Cole OBE, RVO, whose expertise and leadership elevated the musical experience.
‘Thanks to the overwhelming support of attendees, performers, and organisers, the event was a huge success, raising significant funds for the Royal British Legion. Given the fantastic response, we are excited to announce our hopes of making this an annual event, ensuring continued support for this important cause.
Following the success of the concert, there are now plans to make this an annual event at the College. A heartfelt thank you to everyone
who contributed to making the evening so memorable,’ Major Davies said. ‘We look forward to seeing you again next year!’
“We are delighted to announce that the concert raised an amazing £1,255.22 for the Royal British Legion”
Next month, St Dunstan’s Corps of Drums, along with the CCF, will travel to Ypres, Belgium, to take part in the daily Last Post Ceremony under the Menin Gate. During the First World War, more than 877 Dunstonians served in the forces, and St Dunstan’s suffered one of the highest percentage losses of any school in the country. Tragically 277 students and teachers lost their lives during the war.
Last October, the Corps of Drums also participated in the prestigious Lord Mayor’s Music Competition in the Guildhall Yard in central London.
The Corps showcased their exceptional musical talents and delivered a standout performance, demonstrating dedication and skill in the face of strong competition. stdunstans.org.uk
Ballard gives you more
Many families are moving to Ballard for award-winning education, beautiful 34-acre site, fantastic facilities, outstanding ethos and the huge array of opportunities on offer. With waiting lists for certain year groups, it is never too early to visit, particularly for those looking to join in Year 7, 2026.
“Welcoming, motivating, innovative, supportive, inspiring and fun!” these are the words that Ballard’s Head of Upper Prep (Y6-8), Mr Dave Steadman, uses to describe Life@Ballard.
“I love my job; our pupils are so inspiring and kind, they progress well and can still be children. Pastoral care is at the forefront of what we do, creating a positive environment for pupils to flourish. We nurture them, helping them to unlock their potential.”
To find out more about Year 7, we asked two of our Year 8 pupils what they thought.
“I joined in Year 7 and really loved the huge number of opportunities available to me. The teachers make the lessons fun and there is a long list of co-curricular clubs so there is something for everyone!
I have had so much fun, from being part of orchestra, cheerleading and theatre productions to doing 3D printing, laser cutting and really great science experiments.
My favourite memories are making new friends and laughing a lot whilst also learning a lot! Winter highlights include the Christmas concert and fireworks night. Summer was brilliant with the Bude residential trip and swimming in the Ballard pool!” – Olivia
“I joined in Year 7, and I have really enjoyed my first year at Ballard. At my old school, the classes were huge, and it was hard to concentrate with all the distractions or be noticed when trying to answer a question. However, since I have joined Ballard, my grades have improved a lot, and I enjoy my subjects so much more. My favourite is PE as it is taught by amazing teachers who bring out the best in us and it is really fun as well. I am encouraged and challenged to do my best in all lessons and I am proud of my achievements.
The activities after school are amazing and there is so much
choice. They have lots of variety including sports, academics, art, board games and music. I have loved being part of the band and performing in a busy theatre, even playing solo.
My favourite memory was being put forward to trial for the Gothia Youth World Cup by the Director of Sport and then being selected to attend the tournament in Gothenburg. An experience I wouldn’t have had elsewhere!” – Hamish

FULL BOARDING AT MILLFIELD AND MILLFIELD PREP SCHOOL
Full boarding is a concept that is becoming increasingly rare. Many schools offer a plethora of boarding options, flexi, weekly and occasional boarding, meaning schools are quiet, or often empty, on weekends. At a real full boarding school, children live on campus seven days a week and have lots of company in the evenings and on weekends in the boarding houses. The community remains active and vibrant and boarding houses are a home all of the time, not just Monday to Friday.
Millfield has 950 full boarders. This is three-quarters of all the students in the school (1300). Even if 100 students leave school for various family occasions or other commitments over a weekend, 850 students remain on campus. This is important for social interactions, activities and enjoyment of school life.
Millfield Prep has 125 full boarders, and 20 occasional boarders. This is one third of all the pupils in the school. This is a really good size group of children who live at school all week.
A busy boarding house also helps children cope with any homesickness. The consistent nature of full boarding means that children can familiarise themselves with the school routine and get to know peers and staff really well. Houses are alive in the evenings and on weekends, and a busy programme of
activities and events keeps students entertained. Weekend activities include trips to the beach, football and rugby matches, shopping and cinema nights.
Full boarding schools will arrange travel for children to get to and from airports and train stations at the start and end of terms. Millfield staff are at London Heathrow and on the main train line from Somerset to London at the start of term to welcome students back to the UK and help them on their onward travel.
Millfield Headmaster Gavin Horgan says, “We are incredibly proud of our full boarding provision. Being a full boarding school allows us to celebrate and embrace the rich, cultural diversity of our community and to offer a real home from home environment for all students. There is a real buzz around campus, and the sense of community is palpable.”
Learn more about boarding at Millfield and Millfield Prep School at their next Open Day on Saturday 10 May and 4 October 2025. Book here: millfieldschool.com/admissions/open-days

2K crimping is coming back, according to
fashion week runways
Chet Lo’s autumn/winter show brought back hair crimping.
By Lara Owen
Chet Lo brought back Y2K crimping at London Fashion Week, steering away from the hyper-natural hair trends of the moment, and leaning into style nostalgia.
The Asian-American designer, known for his clashing textural designs, collaborated with celebrity hairstylist Anna Cofone and Authentic Beauty Concept to create a textbook Noughties look.
Cofone combined pin-straight hair with uniform crimps, creating a quintessentially Y2K look for Lo’s autumn/winter 2025 collection.
“The inspiration for today’s look is very much a continuation of patterns and panels,” said Cofone, “we wanted to mimic the patterns in Chet’s clothes, so we’ve got these cool, crimped panels appearing at the back of the model’s hair and on some of the sides.”
As for the products, the goal was to look shiny and slick, so Cofone used Authentic Beauty Concept’s hair balms and glow serums to calm any flyaways and add that Y2K-style shine.
While flat and shiny hairstyles are reminiscent of the early Noughties, crimping also recalls the trends of the Eighties, which have been observed on this season’s runways.
“I think it’s great that it’s got this reference to the Eighties,” says Cofone. “Do I think [crimping] is going to come back? I think people can definitely play with crimps and see what shape they get – for sure.”
The nostalgic crimped hair was the perfect accessory for the low-rise skirts and asymmetric tops that flooded this season’s runway – ushering the return of early 2000s fashion – much to Gen Z’s happiness.
RICHARD QUINN CREATES A WINTER WONDERLAND AT LONDON FASHION WEEK
Keely Hodgkinson, Anais Gallagher and Lady Eliza and Lady Amelia Spencer were among the A-listers sitting front row. By Lara Owen
British designer Richard Quinn created a winter wonderland and brought back Dior’s ‘new look’ silhouette almost 80 years later at autumn/winter 2025 London Fashion Week.
Quinn, 35, is famed for his classic, retro styling; often leaning into pared-down elegance, and this show was certainly no exception.
While the designs looked back to the greats of the past, as did the models, with 75-year-old Penelope Tree being cast in the show – a model who rose to prominence during the Swinging Sixties in London.
Quinn encompasses fewer theatrics and edgy thrills than his counterparts, instead opting for refined silhouettes, eyecatching embellishments and old-Hollywood glamour.
While his past collections have featured everything from latex to Lila Moss, the king of subversively joyous fashion seems to have stripped things back.
For his autumn/winter 2025 show, guests eagerly lined up in the soggy streets of St James, a canopy of bustling umbrellas keenly awaiting to enter.
Held in the Royal Horticultural Halls, Quinn transformed the ballroom into a winter wonderland, with a Georgian townhouse emblazoned with his name above the door and wrought iron gates guiding models through a glowing runway lined with street lamps and dusted with snow.
It was as though the show was encapsulated within a vintage snow globe.
As snow fell from the ceiling, classical strings began to play, and sumptuous silks, poufs and ruffles began to spill out onto the runway.
It seems inspiration lay in the likes of Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn.
Born in Lewisham, south-east London, Quinn’s cosmopolitan vintage style gowns are tailored in a humble studio in Peckham.
Despite being famed for his liberal use of loud florals and capacious ruffles; this collection took a more refined approach –showcasing monotoned silks, pitch dark velvets and elegant embellished gowns.
However, that’s not to say the collection wasn’t without his quintessential florals.
Large eighties-style roses washed evening gowns, with exaggerated shoulder pads and cinched wasp waists, blending the extremes of striking confidence and soft femininity.
Quinn’s bridal collection
“This collection took a more refined approach – showcasing monotoned silks, pitch dark velvets and elegant embellished gowns”
was the jewel in the crown, and it is no wonder his bridal designs are currently booming.
Rumoured to be the next Vivienne Westwood when it comes to British wedding gowns, it comes as no surprise that Quinn’s designs are flourishing.
His breathtaking old Hollywood glamour, floor-length veils and refined embellishments offer the perfect timeless yet contemporary wedding dress.
Pluming collars and exaggerated cuffs are classical Quinn motifs, and he injected further fun through silk blouson sleeves, exaggerated shoulder pads and voluminous skirts.
As the show came to a close, Pet Shop Boys’ upbeat Always On My Mind boomed through the sound system, as Quinn reminded us of the joy of his collection.
A-listers sitting front row dressed in Quinn included Olympic runner Keely Hodgkinson, daughter of Oasis star Anais Gallagher and sisters Lady Eliza and Lady Amelia Spencer.

WHY DO PEOPLE FALL IN LOVE WITH FURNITURE?
Harmony and happiness exist in the memories we make, the little things that bring a momentary shine to our lives, and even the objects we find simply aesthetically pleasing. All these joyful morsels of life, crumbled down from our love for the world around us, can be embodied in the furniture we collect when we design our homes to channel the love we have for our safe space. We’ve asked around regarding matters of the heart and the home, and this is the picture we’ve built as to why design enthusiasts and casual couch chillers alike feel such endearment for their furniture. From decades old dining chairs to icons of our industry, here are 5 reasons that love belongs with our belongings.
SENTIMENTALITY
To quote Lou Reed, “I don’t like nostalgia unless it’s mine.” Your sentimentality is the warmest version of your favourite memories; all yours to treasure and hold dear. Nothing sticks more in the mind than that of the home you grew up in. Owning a chair that recalls emotions
of a cherished childhood, or a sofa spent watching shows that gathered the family is a comforting way to bring the best of your past into the present and create a loving environment.
ERGONOMICS
Life is a journey of deciding what works for you, and objects that ergonomically improve your home experience do exactly that. A piece of furniture that suits your space – slid into its spot with the satisfaction of a Tetris piece – can allow you to lean into a more laidback lifestyle or get deeper into your productive passion projects. Offer yourself
research take the trouble off your shoulders. The more harmoniously the furniture fits your needs the more you’ll love it for doing so.
ASPIRATION
Daydreaming, a powerful tool in visualising what you want without already having. Design aficionados like you and I yearn to own a piece of furniture history, an icon of interiors, with that instantly recognisable acclaim that even someone with no interest in design can identify. To look across the room and see a prestigious object and say, “This is a slice of history in my home.” A precious piece with its own story and identity that you’re allowed to wax lyrical about to all who enter.
SHAPE AND COLOUR
“Shaping and shading your home is all part of the expressive experience”
Shaping and shading your home is all part of the expressive experience. The tones that match your mood and the shapes that are easiest on your eye are a sure-fire way to make you fall in love with your space. Having a home that matches your aesthetic brings you closer to a true expression of self – a little bit of you in every nook and cranny. As with everything, it’s horses for courses: those with a more reserved approach find minimalism can make them feel more peaceful and less overwhelmed, while those who enjoy big, bold statements can convey emotions through a collection of colourful objects that characterise them the best. Either way, always making sure your home matches your energy is a vital interior love language.
LONGEVITY
The reverse of nostalgia, these pieces don’t live long in the memory
because they, very simply, are not memories. Owning something for so long it becomes a proverbial ‘part of the furniture,’ an irreplaceable part of your home that it wouldn’t feel like home without. This could be the first chair your bought for your apartment, or the unit that has held your TV aloft since pre-Britpop. Holding onto your furniture is environmentally, economically and evocatively important – and it works best when your furniture is bought with quality, craftsmanship, and care for production in mind. chaplins.co.uk
TOP INDOOR POOL CONSIDERATIONS WITH ORIGIN
Embarking on the journey of building an indoor swimming pool is an exciting decision, but it also comes with many important choices. Attention to detail and precise planning are crucial when designing a successful swimming pool and pool house. With over 40 years of expertise, Origin has the answers to all your questions and will guide you every step of the way, from concept to completion.
Stand-Alone or Pool House Extension?
One of the first decisions is whether to opt for a stand-alone indoor pool house or an extension to your home. This choice will impact everything from design to cost, so it’s essential to consider all factors carefully. Do you want a separate retreat from the main house, a space dedicated to wellness and relaxation?
Or is a pool house extension better suited to your lifestyle, offering easy access from the comfort of your home?
There are advantages to both, but one crucial factor is whether you’ll need planning permission. For stand-alone pool houses that fall within permitted development criteria, planning approval is often not required. However, if you’re extending your home to include an indoor pool, planning permission will be needed. Don’t worry though, Origin handles the entire planning process for you. Their extensive experience in navigating planning regulations will save you time and stress.
Do You Need an Architect?
space or a vibrant social hub for family and friends? Clearly defining your aspirations ensures each element enhances your pool’s overall function and design.
Why Choose Origin?
Here’s the good news: you don’t need to employ a separate architect with Origin, as they handle everything. They provide free design sketches and budget proposals as part of their feasibility studies, so you can have complete confidence knowing your dream pool is in skilled hands from the very beginning. While architects are experts in domestic construction, an indoor pool requires specialised knowledge that many architects may not possess. We’ll take your vision, turn it into a practical design and bring it to life using our specialist team of architects and designers.
What Affects Pool Costs?
Size plays a significant role in the cost of your pool. The most popular indoor pool size falls between 8m to 12m, but rememberbigger isn’t always better. If the size of your pool increases, so does the size of the building that houses it. If you’re an avid swimmer, fantastic counter-current swim devices are available that make a smaller pool just as effective. Another consideration is the pool cover, which is a vital investment, as not only does it retain heat and reduce running costs, but it will also provide a safety barrier, which is particularly important in familyfriendly pools.
When adding extra features like saunas, changing rooms or even a home gym, it is essential to remember your original motivation. Did you want a peaceful retreat for relaxation, a fitness
With Origin, you don’t need to juggle multiple contractors - they do it all.
