tulips. Combining a Garden of Peace, a Garden of Activity and a Garden of Harmony, this area offers the ideal spot for quiet reflection. In the tradition of Japanese gardens, the country’s mountain regions are represented by stones and rocky outcrops, interplanted with shrubs, and spring highlights include neatly clipped hedges of Rhododendron ‘Mother’s Day’, and the Japanese anemone (Anemone x hybrida). Additional programming To complement Sounds of Blossom, Kew’s catering outlets will offer blossom-inspired dishes, and a series of free talks from Kew horticulturists and scientists will cover topics such as pollination, as well as how to conserve blossom-producing trees for generations to come. Visitors can also enjoy a programme of wellbeing events throughout the festival, such as Tai Chi and forest bathing, to lift the spirits. Entry to Sounds of Blossom: Awaken your senses is included when purchasing a ticket to Kew Gardens. The best value tickets can be booked in advance via kew.org. IMAGES: ROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS OF KEW

he first UK exhibition dedicated to the work of French couturière, Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel, charts the evolution of her iconic design style and the establishment of the House of CHANEL - from the opening of her first millinery boutique in Paris in 1910 to the showing of her final collection in 1971. Featuring over 200 looks seen together for the first time, as well as accessories, perfumes and jewellery, the exhibition will explore Chanel’s pioneering approach to fashion design, which paved the way for a new elegance and continues to influence the way women dress today. Highlights will include one of the earliest surviving Chanel garments from 1916; original costumes designed by Chanel for the Ballets Russes production of Le Train Bleu in 1924; outfits created for Hollywood stars Lauren Bacall and Marlene Dietrich; an early example of Chanel’s groundbreaking evening trousers and ensembles from Chanel’s final collection of 1971. Chanel designed first and foremost for herself. By creating clothes fit for an independent and active lifestyle, she anticipated the needs and wants of the modern woman. The exhibition will explore Chanel’s

business enabled her expansion into clothing and will feature one of the earliest surviving Chanel garments, characterised by minimalism and precision – laying the foundations of her design principles. The Emergence of a Style focuses on how Chanel developed an immediately identifiable signature style in the 1920s and 1930s. With clean lines, fluid materials and a simplistic colour palette, her understated designs were radical in their practicality yet displayed a refined elegance. This section also includes Chanel’s British influences and business ventures, and her creations worn on the theatre stage and silver screen. The Invisible Accessory showcases the creation and impact of Gabrielle Chanel’s debut perfume No.5 which became the world’s best-selling fragrance. Chanel made No.5 the signature of her fashion house. This section will also explore the launch of Chanel’s range of makeup in 1924 and skincare in 1927. Luxury and Line focuses on how Chanel’s eveningwear demonstrated a refined mix of inventiveness and classicism which subtly accentuated the female form- harmonising proportions and materials to create garments which expressed elegance, freedom and simplicity. This section will also look at “Bijoux de Diamants”, her first and only 1932 collection of fine jewellery commissioned by the International Diamond Corporation of London. Closing the House will outline the impact of the outbreak of war in 1939 on her personal and professional life. The exhibition will continue with Chanel’s official Return to Fashion on 5 February 1954, featuring the signature hallmarks that she had so successfully introduced during the 1920s and 1930s. The Suit will spotlight the defining garment of Gabrielle Chanel’s post-war contribution to fashion, with over fifty ensembles on display. A declaration of her vision of modern femininity, the Chanel suit combined ease and comfort with simplicity and style. Described by Vogue in 1964 as “the world’s prettiest uniform,” the Chanel suit, which has since become a timeless classic, remains a staple reference for fashion today. Chanel Codes will focus on how accessories were fundamental to Chanel’s conception of a harmonious silhouette. They reflected her pragmatic vision of fashion and provided recognisable codes which 18 F E B RUA RY 2 0 2 4
underlined the unity of her style. Since the 1950s, the Chanel 2.55 handbag and two-tone slingback shoes have become two of the most enduring accessories in the world of fashion. Into the Evening showcases eveningwear as an important part of Chanel’s couture collections in the latter part of her career. From the late 1950s onwards, she adapted her suits to include a range to be worn into the evening. These cocktail suits followed the same form as her day suits, realised in a plethora of richly decorative fabrics such as gold and silver lamés, textured weaves and intricately patterned silks. A Chanel Hallmark will explore this essential part of Gabrielle Chanel’s distinct style. Rejecting the conventions of fine jewels, Chanel gave costume jewellery a new status. From the early 1920s, Chanel’s boutiques offered a dazzling range of costume jewellery to wear with her sleek fashionable garments. Timeless Allure – the exhibition finale – celebrates the evening dress as Chanel’s exercise in style. She proposed a relaxed version of the formal dress that was both discreet and refined. This section will showcase that right up until her final collection of Spring-Summer 1971. Gabrielle Chanel reinterpreted, updated and perfected her rules and principles, continuously refining her quintessential style. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit vam.ac.uk/chanel

BENTLEY’S HERITAGE COLLECTION
THE FINAL MULSANNE ADDS A ROYAL TOUCH
B
entley Motors presents the latest prestigious addition to its rejuvenated Heritage Collection – a bespoke 2020 Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase, the final example of the Mulsanne handcrafted at Bentley’s Dream Factory in Crewe, which has now returned home after service with the Royal household. The last Mulsanne was commissioned by, and built for, Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and includes a range of bespoke features to ensure the car was fit for royal duties. The starting point was an exterior in solid Barnato green, paired with an interior in Twine and Cumbrian hide, Burr Walnut wood veneers and deep lambswool carpets. To this, the specification added rear privacy curtains and the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom

inlaid into the door waistrails, while the front centre armrests were removed in lieu of a custom-sized tray to accommodate the Queen’s handbag. Discretely concealed blue police lights, a siren and a bullhorn were also installed, with a dedicated switch panel hidden beneath a walnut-veneered door behind the gear lever. Bentley’s famous 537PS 6.75-litre V8 engine, 21” alloy wheels and chrome brightware for the grille and front wing vents and the iconic Flying B complete the car, which will be retained as the third and final Mulsanne in Bentley’s Heritage Collection. It will join the second Mulsanne ever built, VIN 0002 from 2010, and a 2019 Mulsanne Speed that previously saw service on Bentley’s press fleet. The three Mulsannes are part of an expanded 45-car Collection, 2.5 years into a three-year programme to completely rebuild a family of
cars that together explain and describe Bentley’s 104-year history.
A History of Mulsanne
Launched at Pebble Beach in 2009, the Mulsanne was developed from scratch, housing a new variant of Bentley’s 6.75-litre V8 engine, a new chassis, as well as new exterior and interior designs. In 2016, a new Mulsanne was launched at the Geneva Motor Show, with the car further raising the standards of luxury with a redesigned interior – featuring new seats, door trims, armrests, navigation technology and a brandnew infotainment system. The front end of the car was also upgraded with new grilles, lights and a new bonnet. Alongside the new Mulsanne in 2016, Bentley also launched the Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase, with a 250 mm extension of the Mulsanne’s footprint enabling space for an ornate folding table, centre console, electronic leg-rests and privacy curtains to deliver the best-in-class luxury experience for the rear-seat passengers. Bidding farewell to the Mulsanne in 2020, the final 30 series production cars formed the unique ‘6.75 Edition by Mulliner’, with the name derived from the car’s legendary 6.75-litre engine – which also came to the end of production alongside the Mulsanne after more than 60 years. The Mulsanne was in production for over a decade, with each of the 7,300 cars handcrafted at Bentley’s factory in Crewe, England.

THE WORLD’S GREATEST CELEBRATION OF DOGS RETURNS 7 – 10 March 2024, NEC Birmingham
O
More than 20,000 dogs will be taking their paws to the greatest Dog Show in the World next month - Crufts 2024.
rganised by The Kennel Club, the iconic Show will run from Thursday and across the weekend with a four-day action-packed schedule, celebrating our four-legged friends and all things dog. The event will showcase over 200 diverse breeds and see dogs from all walks of life put their best paw forward in fast-paced and fun competitions including agility, heelwork to music, flyball and obedience. The family-favourite Scruffts final sees the nation’s pets - who earned their place in heats across the country throughout the year - compete for the ‘top dog’ title and on Sunday evening, one of

five very special finalists will be crowned as the winner of The Kennel Club Hero Dog Award, as voted by the public. Shortly after, following four days of competition, one canine Crufts competitor will put their paws on the coveted Best in Show trophy, which in 2023 was awarded to Orca, the Lagotto Romagnolo, whose ‘tail never stops wagging’. Each day will conclude with one dog earning their place in the Best in Show final on Sunday evening, beginning with the Utility and Toy groups on Thursday 7 March, Gundog group on Friday 8 March, Working and Pastoral groups on Saturday 9 March and
concluding with the Terrier and Hound groups on Sunday 10 March. For the 30th year, the popular Discover Dogs area will be welcoming over 200 different breeds of all shapes, sizes and personalities - enabling visitors to learn more about the variety of our four-legged friends from breed experts and see which canine might be the right companion for them. From discovering the lesser known ‘underdogs’, like the rare Otterhound, to understanding what the popular family-favourites, like the Labrador Retriever, really need in a home, Discover Dogs is a unique area of the event. Each breed ‘booth’ can help prospective puppy owners on every step of their journey – from responsible puppy buying tips to day-to-day training and caring requirements. For those hoping to rehome a rescue dog, The Kennel Club Breed Rescue organisations will also be on hand to provide visitors with everything they need to know about rehoming. Over 500 stands selling all sorts of doggy delights will cover 25 acres of the NEC at Crufts. The event also showcases a range of dog-focussed charities and organisations, including The Kennel Club Charitable Trust, who will demonstrate how dogs can support us, and how we can support them. Many of these organisations will also showcase their work through displays, like the super sniffing Medical Detection Dogs and the brave West Midlands Police Dogs. After a successful launch of the Stand Up To Cancer Crufts Walkies Challenge in 2023, which saw dogs and their owners raise an incredible £1.4 million, the challenge will be returning for a second year - encouraging two and four-legged friends to walk 60 miles in April to support life-saving cancer research. The Young Kennel Club, for 6–24-year-olds, and The Kennel Club’s Good Citizen Dog Training scheme, will be running displays and demonstrations in dedicated rings throughout the four days. There is also a Dog Activities ring for those interested in learning more about getting started in activities such as agility, heelwork to music and obedience. TV viewers can soak up the atmosphere by tuning into Channel 4, More4 and All4 broadcast. The action is also live streamed on the official Crufts YouTube channel. Facing wild mountain landscapes, wild weather patterns and wild animals, the trio battle hostile conditions to ski stunning lines down truly immaculate peaks. Cross Countries: French mountain biking legend Kilian Bron spends his time travelling the world looking for thrilling routes to ride, and this time he’s crossing North America on some of the continent’s most iconic trails. From urban bike life in New York City, to red rock formations in Moab, to dense Canadian forests, Kilian embarks on the ultimate ride – captured with his signature artistic flair. THE DIOR BY SARAH MOON BOOK, ÉDITIONS DELPIRE & CO

n continuation of the dialogue between Dior and Sarah Moon, the House is publishing an elegant box set of images taken by the photographer, most of which were created especially for this publication, notably at the Fondation Le Corbusier or at Dior’s archives. “Fabric is the sole impetus of our dreams. And fashion, in short, is the result of a dream, and dreams area form of escape” , Christian Dior wrote in his memoirs. An elusive and impalpable dream of fashion that Sarah Moon nonetheless manages to capture in her evanescent and powerfully textured photos. A pictorial and gestural form of poetry, transcending the Dior spirit and style, which expresses the force emanating from the silhouettes imagined by Christian Dior and his successors, particularly those of Maria Grazia Chiuri, Creative Director of Dior Women’s collections. In ode to multifaceted femininity, sublime by its very complexity, the work of Sarah Moon is unveiled in an outstanding edition of three beautiful books, each celebrating the many facets of Dior and the architectural essence of its creations. The first volume presents a selection of staged compositions, which explore the variations of

Signed by Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons and Maria Grazia Chiuri, the pieces and their adjoining texts by Olivier Saillard relate thus while facing the artist’s lens, the history of a House in perpetual movement. The third opus reproduces Sarah Moon’s conversation with Maria Grazia Chiuri initiated in 2016. Haloed in ablur that bestows a magnetic aura, the images invite the reader to discover the singular

relationship uniting the two women and display the evolution of the Creative Director’s work step by step, putting it thus into perspective. “Revealing the body while dressing it, is probably what attracted me”. Sarah Moon. “It is via her images that I discovered fashion during my studies. They came to the surface again when I arrived at Dior and started looking for new interpretations of femininity in fashion design.” Sarah Moon’s signature resides in her capacity to give form to unconscious movements and retrospective intuition, and in her aptitude to image indescribable ambiences. “For all these reasons, her vision was perfect for transcribing the story told by my creative process for the Dior collections: that of a woman anchored in her epoch, drawing her strength by listening to her emotions.” Texts by Sarah Moon, Olivier Saillard and Maria Grazia Chiuri, along with quotes from Monsieur Dior chosen by the photographer, enrich this precious boxset, available from delpire & co edition. 40 FEBRUARY 2024
The distinctive work of photographer Sarah Moon, born 1941, is developed around three themes: the ephemeral nature of beauty, uncertainty and the passage of time. Prevalent in her images are fashion, nature and myths, characteristically bathed in a signature haze. Particularly renowned for her polaroids, halftone photography and blurred faces, Sarah Moon has published many books, including Vrais Semblants, Coïncidences and the winner of the Prix Nadar, 1.2.3.4.5, All with éditions delpire. She has also made several feature and medium-length films about photography and photographers. Obtaining numerous awards, sarah moon’s work is exhibited and recognized throughout the world. In 2021, the museum of modern art, paris, presented a retrospective of her work entitled passéprésent.

ASTON MARTIN PRESENTS THE WORLD’S MOST BESPOKE ROAD BICYCLE
A
ston Martin and British titanium bicycle leader J.Laverack have united to create a road bicycle without equal; the J.Laverack Aston Martin .1R. Developed with input from high-performance automotive designers, the .1R is the most bespoke, most advanced and most engineered bicycle ever created featuring a number of world firsts. It is not a bicycle simply to be gazed at - it has been purposefully designed with performance and riding experience at the core. Synergising the shared values of the two high performance British brands, Aston Martin and J.Laverack have applied truly innovative design and engineering processes to produce a fully integrated ‘visually boltless’ design that possesses an aesthetic purity and obsession to detail beyond compare. The J.Laverack Aston Martin .1R uses a flawless fusion of parametrically designed, 3D printed titanium lugs and sculpted carbon fibre tubes. This ensures a frame that not only delivers an exceptional blend of response and comfort, but also sets new standards of elegance and beauty on two wheels. It also features faultless clean lines, where bicycle owners would normally expect to find fixings at the stem or seat post. The
48 FEBRUARY 2024
integrated four piston brake calipers are clean sheet design and required the development of bespoke testing equipment. As a result, there is not a single exposed cable or hose visible on the whole bicycle. The C13 saddle from British company Brooks has been specifically commissioned for the .1R. Each saddle can be trimmed in the owners choice of leather or Alcantara, and is finished with a single titanium rivet. The same material choice is available for the handlebar grips, with the full suite of Aston Martin colours on offer. Applying innovations from outside the normal sphere of bicycles, everywhere you look on the .1R there are new solutions. Developed in collaboration with the most innovative designers from the highperformance automotive world, the .1R not only adopts design mastery from Aston Martin’s supercar and hypercar programmes but also benefits from the pinnacle of road bicycle engineering. Offering a truly bespoke build for each owner, the world’s first online bicycle configurator offers the exact colours and materials available on Aston Martin’s ultra-luxury, high performance sportscars. KATE MOSS’S WELLBEING SECRETS AS SHE TURNS
“I
’m not turning 50,” Moss, who rose to fame in the Nineties, said in a recent interview with the Sunday Times. “No. I’m not thinking about it. I do not feel 50.” It’s hard to believe she’s marking such a milestone, but the Croydon-born, mumof-one has swapped catwalks and London parties for a more holistic life in Oxfordshire. So how does she look after herself? Here are her wellbeing secrets through the years.

Morning tea and meditation
“I don’t look back. I’ve reflected a lot on the past but now I like to be present, live in the now. I’m being present in the moment, seeing things, being mindful,” she says on her skincare and wellness website Cosmoss, where she also sells her infamous Dawn Tea, her drink of choice for first thing in a morning. The tea includes hibiscus flowers, crushed bay leaves and ginger roots, designed to help energise the body, strengthen skin, hair and nails and maintain immunity. “I find taking these few moments to myself really helps me prepare for my day,” she told Porter Magazine.

The wellness entrepreneur also created Love Letters for Cosmoss – a set of 150 daily affirmation cards curated by Moss and contributors from fashion, philosophy and the arts – in order to support, share and inspire.
Crystal charging
Moss, who has appeared on the cover of British Vogue over 40 times, also keeps healing crystals, which she charges under the moonlight. “I put all my crystals on a tray and put them outside in the garden,” the model said during her Sunday Times interview. “Just cleansing the crystals, charging the crystals.” Her favourites include rose quartz, which represents compassion and love, and melonite, which is meant to channel protective and grounding properties. Though it took her some time to find the type of meditation that works best, she now practices transcendental meditation for 10-15 minutes, where she repeats a personalised mantra. She has said that it helps to build the discipline to stop and be “in herself”.

Wild swimming
It seems Moss, who has been the face of Calvin Klein and Chanel, has taken her bucolic lifestyle to another level. Since moving to Little Faringdon in West Oxfordshire, where she is surrounded by outdoor space, she has taken up wild swimming and growing her own vegetables. Moss goes wild swimming “in a secret place, in the middle of lots of fields and only the villagers are allowed to use it”, according to the Sunday Times, which has many surprising health benefits, such as improving blood pressure and fat levels in the blood.

‘QUIET LUXURY’ How to get the look
F
ads come and go, but when is a trend not a trend? “The ‘quiet luxury’ anti-trend is an understated approach to dressing that can be perfected by styling timeless, low-key staples with minimalistic designs,” says Sheila McKain, chief product officer at Hush. Indeed, when celebrating classic tailoring, ‘quiet luxury’ proves a little goes a long way. Think pared-down pieces that don’t shout ‘look at me,’ but have a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ that makes you look effortlessly chic and rich – without a logo or label in sight. To master this aesthetic, McKain says you don’t have to spend thousands on high-end designer pieces: “It’s more about choosing great quality and thoughtful design – selecting core items you can use to create a base is key.” She says trophy pieces include a classic blazer, wide-leg trousers or straight-leg jeans and a crisp, white shirt. “When styled together, each of these pieces can create a multitude of everyday looks,” suggests McKain. To ensure you get the most wear out of each item, she says to keep colours neutral and stay within a palette of brown, beige, black and white. As far as accessories go, she says jewellery should be kept minimal with something as simple as a small hoop earring. If this sounds a little too safe, a gold bangle or carefully selected thin gold necklace chains (styled effortlessly) will luxe up your look to the desired effect. As Sian Ryan, director of design at River Island, puts it: “Quiet luxury is essentially a wardrobe of styling essentials, where items can be worn in a multitude of ways and span many

seasons – ensuring customers get a true sense of value for money.”
HERE’S HOW TO GET THE LOOK… The white shirt “My favourite outfit at the minute is a white shirt teamed with a straight-leg jean and pointed-toe kitten heel,” says Ryan. “When I wear this, I feel put together, yet effortless. I like to think of it as ‘easy elegance’.” Whether you wear your crisp, white shirt open with a sleeveless white vest underneath, or buttoned up nonchalantly, go a size larger to make it look more expensive. Longer in the sleeve, wider on the shoulder and a little more length gives it that luxurious, designer feel. Neutral knits “Neutral knitwear in super-soft luxury yarns are perfect for when the days turn cooler,” says Karen Peacock, Albaray’s co-founder and chief creative officer. “A chic colour palette that goes with everything helps create multiple ways to wear.” Remember, fabrics play a leading role, so look for soft-to-the-touch in a smooth yarn for a cashmere cheat – or some texture for your rib crib-sheet.
FASHION & BEAUTY
Tailored jacket “An elevated blazer in a heritage check looks ideal styled with a classic jean and white T-shirt combination,” suggests Peacock. “A simple look which creates an easy, pared-back luxe look.” Straight-leg jeans Whether you go for a washed look or mid-wash blue, a looser fit is encouraged to make them look premium. And remember, no obvious branding on the bum or rips on knees. Plus, if you can comfortably pose with hand-in-pocket, you’re in the inner circle for classy, desirable denim. Camel coat Looking ahead and transitioning into Autumn, a timeless camel coat always looks effortlessly chic. Naturally, the colour plays a part. Camel isn’t practical, it shows every mark and therein lies the beauty of it – you’re wealthy enough to fork out for dry cleaning bills. “A camel coat offers versatility and a sense of polish to any outfit,” notes Peacock. A welcome addition to any wardrobe, she says a masculine silhouette and slight oversized fit allows for multiple layering opportunities… we’re thinking an ivory sweater tied around the shoulders, just so. Gold jewellery “From understated hoops to simple chains, the quiet luxury trend is about choosing the right pieces, and keeping it simple, timeless and refined,” says Sally Arkley-Wade, head of product and trading at H Samuel. She says to focus on quality materials and subtle details to create elegant and sophisticated looks. “Team your plain white top, those everyday jeans or timeless shirt with affordable musthaves,” suggests Arkley-Wade. “Choose from 9ct gold chains, stack up your ear with 9ct gold hoops, or invest in the finer details – whatever your style, you will find something to suit your budget.” And select pieces which can be worn with a variety of outfits, she adds. “Mix and match delicate necklaces, stack thin rings, or layer bracelets to add depth and interest to your overall style.” 72 FEBRUARY 2024

ur star sign can tell us a lot about our personality type and preferences in life, and when it comes to make-up, there’s one product that epitomises one’s style more than any other: lipstick. From matte to gloss and bright to neutral, the possibilities are endless, but what lip look is best according to astrology? We asked Zodiac experts for their advice on the lip shades that suit each sign…
ARIES
under the sign of the bull. Luxury styling will be enhanced by a rich satin finish.”
GEMINI
For the social butterflies of the zodiac, a versatile but vibrant pink or coral will suit their playful nature. “These shades capture their youthful and lively energy SIGNATURE LIP 1990, £28, while allowing them to express their funAVAILABLE FROM MERIT loving side,” Chandler says. “Whether it’s a playful hot pink or a subtle coral, Geminis can effortlessly pull off these shades and add a touch of flirtatiousness to their look.”
For the sign ruled by Mars, aka the red planet, bright reds and fiery oranges complement Aries’ confident personality. “These warm hues symbolise their dynamic spirit and help them command attention wherever they go,” says intuition coach and psychic Julie Chandler. “Whether it’s a classic red lipstick that exudes power or a statement orange that represents their zest for life, Aries can rock these shades with their natural charisma.”
CANCER
TAURUS
It won’t come as a surprise to glamour-loving Leos that bold hues are best. “A shade that complements their radiant and passionate aura is a deep, rich burgundy or a luxurious, vibrant plum,” Chandler says. “These shades reflect their regal presence and help them command attention wherever they go.”
“A grounded and peaceful sign, Taurus favours a subtle aesthetic,” says celebrity psychic and astrologer Inbaal Honigman, which is why she recommends a neutral, brown-toned lip colour. “Burnt caramel is a gentle and warm shade, which illustrates the cosy outlook of those born 74 F E B RUA RY 2 0 2 4
For homebody Cancerians, it’s all about simplicity and feel-good vibes. “Cancer likes to get made-up with the minimum of fuss, and will choose a balmy lip tint for ease of application and a fuss-free feel,” says Honigman. “Gentle peach hues fit the loving vibe of those born under the sign of the crab.”

VIEVE MODERN MATTE LIPSTICK MUSE, £23, AVAILABLE FROM VIEVE
GUERLAIN ROUGE G SATIN LIPSTICK REFILL ROSEWOOD, £22.10, AVAILABLE FROM ESCENTUAL
VIRGO
“Neat and organised, Virgos enjoy a natural look, letting their innate beauty shine,” says Honigman, who recommends a lightweight lip tint or stain, rather than a full-coverage lipstick. “A fresh shade of pretty pink, such as rosewood, suits the practical style of those born under the sign of the virgin.”
LIBRA
Representing their harmonious nature, a subtle ‘your lips but better’ look suits Librans. “A shade that complements their gentle and romantic aura is a soft, rosy pink or a warm, peachy nude,” Chandler says. “These shades reflect their innate elegance and help them create a sense of balance and poise in their appearance.”
SCORPIO
“Intense and dramatic, Scorpio appreciates individuality in styling, with a bit of an edge,” says Honigman, which is why she suggests rich berry tones with a matte or satin finish. “Burgundy lips in berry shades are the perfect balance of shade and sweetness for those born under the sign of the scorpion.”
SAGITTARIUS
Free-spirited Sagittarians should embrace their adventurous side with an eye-catching lip colour. “A shade that complements their bold and fiery energy is a vibrant berry or a fiery orange-red,” says Chandler. “These shades represent their adventurous spirit and help them make
a statement wherever they go.”
CAPRICORN
“A business-minded and focused sign, Capricorn practically invented power dressing and powerful make-up,” Honigman says, and it’s got to be “luxe not dupes” when choosing a statement red lip. “No-nonsense lips in the reddest of reds scream ‘strength’ for those born under the sign of the sea-goat. They’ll favour a matte finish for that upmarket feel.”
AQUARIUS
One might expect unconventional Aquarians to rock something distinctive such as metallic lilac, but Chandler recommends a more minimalist approach: “A clear gloss, with its natural shine and subtle enhancement, can go a long way in showcasing an Aquarius’ unique and creative personality. “It’s a reflection of their ability to stand out effortlessly without relying on bold colours. The clear gloss adds a touch of freshness and minimalism, allowing their natural beauty and individuality to shine through.”
PISCES
“Dreamy and romantic, Pisces aspire to emulate the feels and looks of storybook characters and leading ladies of their favourite love stories,” Honigman says. That’s why only a rosy pink will do: “Enduring and kissable, a romantic peony shade will suit those born under the sign of the fish. A glossy finish will give Pisces that otherworldly quality that they appreciate.” FEBRUARY 2024 75

STYLISH ACCESSORIES TO KEEP WARM THIS WINTER These chic, cosy knits will shield you from the cold, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
S
ometimes it takes a super chilly cold snap to spark snuggle season – and remind you how winter woollies are a wardrobe essential. And with so many brights on our radar, not to mention the ease of a pull-on with a pop of colour for an instant style update, or a flourish of fingerless gloves to show off your nail art, it’s time to dial up your daywear of fleecy extras…
Gorgeous gloves
From arm warmers to fingerless gloves, the added bonus of being finger-free is you can make a style statement out of these wristees – and get more mileage from your manicure. After all, what’s the point of spending time in the salon only to cover up those bold shades, twinkly designs and two-tone looks RIVER with a run-of-the-mill mitten… leaving you ISLAND PINK HEAVYWEIGHT fumbling for your phone. SCARF, £25
Supersized scarves
The blanket scarf is the runaway hit, which will make you look every inch a fashionista. Essentially, the bigger, the brighter, the better! Cited by Vogue as the biggest accessory trend across the autumn/winter 2023 collections, this is not a comforter to keep under wraps – wear it long and loose, then drape it over the back of your neck when the temperature plummets.
Hero hats
Versatile and up to date, the beanie continues to build its loyal following… and prove it’s more than a one-size suits all. Go for chenille, cashmere or merino yarn for the softest pull-on – it’s the headgear of the moment to look effortlessly cool. 80 FEBRUARY 2024

For AW23, you’re spoilt for choice with a flurry of catwalkinspired styles hitting the high street ready to complete your winter wardrobe. From sturdy stompers to elegant evening options, these are the boots to be seen in this season…
Stiletto heels
After years of super-thick soles and oversized silhouettes, we’re now seeing the return of spindly-heeled boots. From neat kitten heels (seen on the runways of Christopher Kane and Jil Sander) to vertiginous stilettos (courtesy of Loewe, Hermès and Acne Studios) these boots mean business.

Knee-high boots
The biggest footwear trend of the season, long boots (hitting just below the knee or slightly above) have taken over from shorter styles as the celebrity-approved staples AW23. Embraced by the likes of Kim Kardashian and Selena Gomez, flat or block-heeled black knee boots can be teamed with mini skirts, midi dresses and more, and they’re a chic day-tonight option too.

Chunky tread boots are still very much on trend, but this year for a fresh feel it’s all about pale hues. Part of the ‘latte dressing’ look, a beige or cream pair will complete any coffee-inspired outfit. 84 FEBRUARY 2024
Taking the ‘hikingcore’ look to the next level, ultrainsulated all-weather boots are the catwalk trend that’s proving practical during this season of storms. Whether you’re hitting the slopes or socialising in the city, team with cosy knits and a puffer jacket for a sporty-chic vibe.
BILLIE BLACK SUEDE, £239, AVAILABLE FROM SOLE BLISS.

CROWNING GLORY:
CREATING THE PERFECT ROOF
A
beautiful roof can be the crowning glory of a house, and a secure, watertight roof protects everything underneath it. Restoring or replacing a roof requires safe hands, such as those of Hakka Group, a highly skilled and experienced company frequently trusted by the owners of homes of distinction or special heritage, some of them well-known individuals. Hakka Group works across London and the Home Counties, led by its Managing Director Daniel Powell, who took charge after serving for 12 years in the Parachute Regiment where he learned to excel in both leadership and management under extreme pressure. “Most of all, we like to work on roofs of character”, says Daniel, “That means that we often source and use special materials, and our people use just the right tools and techniques. All of our roofing team are highly skilled artisans, including those who renovate and repair brickwork or leadwork. Some of our team started working for my father over twenty years ago! The result is properties that are in keeping with their surroundings, and are a joy to live in. “I worked with my father in his roofing

company before I joined the military. Now, I use the skills I picked up there to benefit our family business. That means a focus on outcomes, processes, and expertise. We put our clients at the centre of any project and give them a first-rate experience. That includes listening to their needs at all stages, explaining options on materials, style, and finish, and being a safe pair of hands. “We source and work with the finest materials, such as lead, slate, and handmade clay tiles. We have worked on projects from individual, Victorian-era dwellings, to whole estates. For example, a project to renew the lead and slate on several Crown Estate properties in Regents Park.” Dan’s company has earned testimonials such as this, “HAKKA Group are wonderful, a tremendous band of brothers. Dan is a superlative leader of men… He does all he can to make working with him and his team a great experience…. He is unlike any roofer that we’ve had… and is just a very nice guy to do business with… they have a very, very high standard of work.” - Lady P, Kent. CURATED HOMES WITH A PRACTICAL FOCUS
M
indful Minimalism is going to be big news in 2024, according to independent tile specialists Porcelain Superstore. The retailer – which specialises in beautiful porcelain and ceramic tiles – believe homeowners are going to be taking a more curated view when it comes to designing their living spaces, prioritising homewares with a purpose as well as aesthetic appeal. Abbas Youssefi, Director of Porcelain Superstore, said: “Minimalism was a huge trend 20 years ago. But as more people started welcoming the world into their homes via social media, it brought with it a maximalist shift in an attempt to wow. “But now we are seeing a move to a more considered approach. Homeowners are looking for calm and are buying with intention, finding pieces that look great and serve a purpose. We are not going to see a return to the starkness of noughties minimalism, instead we are looking at a more
mindful approach.” Typified by clean lines, natural materials and more neutral shades, Mindful Minimalism is all about living more intentionally – investing in timeless pieces that will last. Here Abbas picks his favourite designs from Porcelain Superstore’s collections – all of which will inject a dose of Mindful Minimalism wherever they are used.
ABOUT PORCELAIN SUPERSTORE Independent and family-run, the brothers behind Porcelain Superstore might have been brought up in the tile industry, but they aren’t afraid of shaking it up. Passionate about porcelain, they scour Europe and beyond for their curated collections, which are handpicked from only the most respected tile factories. Only the best-looking and top-quality tiles make it to their warehouse where bright, vibrant geometrics sit alongside more traditional large format tiles to offer customers the widest choice of quality porcelain tiles. Throw in exceptional customer service and five-year guarantees on all tiles and it’s easy to see why Porcelain Superstore are not afraid of breaking the mould. porcelainsuperstore.co.uk 100 FEBRUARY 2024

LUXURY DESIGN
Tell me more about the team at Partners in Design and what makes you so dynamic? Our team is passionate about design. We believe in getting to know and understand our clients and working alongside them to create the home they have always wanted. It’s about interpreting an often vague initial brief and presenting design options which excite without overwhelming. The goal is to achieve a timeless space they will love for years to come.
“Good interior design is all about how a space will make you feel and that starts with colour!”
What is your opinion of the use of colours and bold patterns in a design project? Good interior design is all about how a space will make you feel and that starts with colour! A good initial guide is the 60/30/10 ratio for using colour predomininant /secondary /accent colours. The primary colour is in the walls, large furniture, maybe sofas – (its what makes you walk into a room and think at a glance it’s a grey/beige/green space). The secondary colour might be in curtains, painted furniture, rugs and the 10% accent colour in cushions, throws and accessories. The main colour acts as a backdrop for furniture and accessories while the bold colours bring it all together, adding liveliness and contrast to the neutrals. Well placed patterns on, for example ,chairs or wallpaper can be used to unify all the room colours. 102 FEBRUARY 2024
What design services do you offer? We offer a “concept to completion” service from full interior design through building and project management. We work with 2D and 3D programmes to enable clients to fully visualise our ideas and how spaces will look and feel on completion before they start. Our architectural team can provide technical drawings if extensions and structural work are required. We design and make bespoke furniture, kitchens and bathrooms. We also have an inhouse team of trades, makers and a sewing workshop to deliver all that has been designed under our project management. We aim to make home transformations as hassle free and enjoyable as possible.

use of colour, carefully designed lighting and flooring/finishes etc. We may design “hidden” studies within cabinetry to provide flexibility in an open plan space. Similarly, well designed cabinetry can provide a childrens’ play area when open and can then be compactly stored away when the space is needed for entertaining.
What is the best way of using lighting to enhance a room? Lighting should be a balance of functional and mood setting sources. A mix of discreet architectural style lighting within or behind pieces of furniture or recessed into the floor to “wash” walls or art is a way to create different light levels within a space. This will allow you to transition through day and night creating the look and feel you want however you will use the space. These can be mixed with some statement light fittings which blend functionality and art to create the “wow” factor in key spaces such as above the dining area, island or in a hallway.
What are the challenges in Interior design today People increasingly want to have more flexible living spaces so often want to open up downstairs spaces to incorporate living, dining and entertaining spaces within the whole. However it’s important to create an “identity” for each area, through clever
CASE STUDY Can you tell me about a recent favourite project? What made it special for you? We recently modernised two annexed mid19th century farmers’ cottages to create an elegant contemporary home. Most of it hadn’t been touched since the 1950s. There was a labyrinth of small dark rooms with low ceilings and a single staircase in the corner, so there was no flow to the ground floor. To resolve this issue we removed the internal walls, losing those small dark rooms, to create a wonderful open plan space incorporating a TV area, library snug and garden room. Then we added a pitched roof with skylights to allow natural daylight to flood into the new space. We finished the design with steel-framed doors and windows and our cabinet makers created a beautiful staircase which was set in the middle of the house. The transformation from dark and cramped to light, airy and spacious was stunning.

A GRAND ENTRANCE
A
new staircase can completely transform a hallway, not just in the way it looks but how the space is used. Assessing the available space and rearranging the layout of the hallway to use the space more efficiently can add valuable square metres to a home’s entrance. A specialist staircase designer will consider all options, including changing the staircase direction to create a better flow of movement, using an open tread design to maximise natural light and reviewing materials used to ensure the stair is in keeping with the period of the property. Sometimes it can mean commissioning a whole new staircase while other times, changing the balustrade on an existing structure will make all the difference. The first thing to get right is the layout. The space may suit a helical, a winder, a spiral or a straight staircase, each with its own set of pros and cons. A staircase specialist will have the experience to see solutions where others might not; offering different layout options and multiple staircase ideas, explaining the benefits of each one. The staircase should integrate perfectly with the property it is designed for. Only 60% of the design is about the staircase, 40% is about how it interfaces with the

property. Bisca will incorporate materials, textures and colours from the interior scheme into the new staircase, so it’s a perfect fit in the home. Handcrafted balustrades and handrails in natural materials are popular and can be adapted to suit any interior, from a period home full of classical features to a contemporary new build. Balustrades can be designed to make a big impact or add subtle elegance - a traditional staircase will look entirely different with forged steel uprights and a handrail in polished wood. Driven by an ethos centred around environmental sustainability, Bisca places a strong focus on sourcing materials responsibly, upcycling and creating strong partnerships with suppliers who share the same values. Bisca’s award-winning staircases are built entirely in the company’s own workshop in North Yorkshire. Each commission is the handiwork of a dedicated team of multi-skilled craftspeople who combine traditional disciplines, including metalwork, blacksmithing, cabinetry, joinery and leatherworking with precision-engineered designs and modern materials. WALL MURAL TRENDS
C
reators of custom-made wallpaper murals, Wallsauce has rolled out its predictions of the wall mural trends for 2024. From jungle vibes to fakin’ it with marble, there will be a mural for every home this new year. Wallsauce has a wide range of trending wallpapers ideal for sprucing up any room. Whether decorating your bathroom or your hallways, its stunning collections are ideal to complement a vast range of interior styles.
Fake it with marbellous textures If you’re here for an easy (yet glamorous) life, then you’ll be pleased to know that Wallsauce predicts customers will be fakin’ it in 2024! Marble is a timeless look – and an expensive one… Luckily, Wallsauce has the murals to help you achieve this. From traditional marble designs to colourful, fluid designs, there’s a plethora of designs for you to choose from.
The jungle trend is here to stay The jungle trend quietly appeared on the scene a couple of years ago, and it rapidly came into our homes during lockdown. We surrounded ourselves with as much nature as possible whilst confined to our homes to keep ourselves connected to the outdoors. Over this time, we have seen customers adorn their walls in vibrant jungle designs, but over the coming year, we predict customers will tone down the colour and opt for a more natural colour palette.
Beige will remain the chosen colour palette After a few grey years, beige made its way in 2023. Wallsauce predicts the neutral colour palette shall remain for some. Mural choices for this palette are predicted to include beautiful florals along with concrete effects. Beige is a great base colour, so opting to add splashes of colour at a later date won’t cost you a new scheme. wallsauce.com

URBAN EDITIONS - MODERN, MINIMALIST FURNITURE
U
rban Editions presents a collection of high-quality, customisable furniture with a minimalist, mid-century or contemporary aesthetic designed and made in the UK using sustainable hardwoods. Not far from the Severn Estuary in Somerset a team of expert joiners and crafts people are building our TV stands and cabinets. The oak may come from Europe, the walnut from America and the iroko from Africa, but the real value is added in the UK where we cut, sand, join and finish the final products. The quality is in the hardwoods we use, the smooth finish and the natural grain patterns are beautiful, while the simple, minimalist but functional design gives a contemporary feel to any room. The range includes TV stands, coffee tables, console tables, desks and a unique selection of cabinets for the music enthusiast with a vinyl

record collection or Hi-Fi equipment, although these may equally double as a sideboard. A TV stand is not just a piece of furniture; it’s an integral part of your entertainment set-up and something used and seen every day. While its primary purpose is to support your television, a welldesigned TV unit can greatly enhance your viewing experience. In recent years, the trend of extra-wide TV stands has gained popularity, and for good reason. Gone are the days of small, boxy televisions. Today, large and sleek TVs have become the norm. If you’re an avid movie buff or a sports enthusiast, you likely own a large-screen TV that demands attention. A 2m extra wide TV stand offers the ideal solution by accommodating these larger screens. With its generous width, it provides ample space for your TV to sit comfortably and securely without looking like it dwarfs the unit that it sits on. The term ‘mid-century modern’ has a broad reach in design terms. Spanning decades of the twentieth-century with a global influence, it established an enduring benchmark in the design industry which continues to inspire to this day, and its popularity shows no sign of abating. The understated lines of our collection of minimalist, solid wood furniture are directly influenced by the mid-century modern movement. See the full range at TheUrbanEditions.com 01225 285111

ANOTHER NOTTING HILL HOME
E
asy Designée have recently completed a total refurbishment of a 4 storey Victorian terraced house on a quiet residential road in Notting Hill, in West London. The extension, refurbishment and remodelling of the house was to provide a modern family home. Our clients wanted to create a warm and comfortable home with modern features and Victorian touches. The house lacked character and personality although it benefited from good structure and delightful daylight.
11 2 F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 4
The house was stripped out and remodelled internally creating a sequence of horizontally and vertically interlocking interior spaces. The existing facade to the rear of the house has been rationalised, by replacing the existing conservatory at lower ground floor level with a gull height glass opening to accommodate the new, contemporary kitchen. By subtle changes to the spaces and by adding texture, colour, and fine materials we were able to create a warm, comfortable, and welcoming family home. We have achieved a harmonious and calm aesthetic throughout with modern touches within a timeless design. The existing rear elevation has been rationalised, a conservatory at lower ground floor level replaced with a gull height glass opening and the kitchen relocated to the lower floor. We felt that more could be made of the period features, enhancing some and reinstating others to bring out more of the Victorian feel of the property, showcased in the formal living room, which faces the main street and benefits form plenty of sunlight throughout the day. Our choice of a bold colour feature wall is a direct reflection of the Victorian era, as well as the vivid personality of family, who embraced the audacious design choice right away. The floor to ceiling panelled wall is the main feature of the master bedroom, giving the space tones of greatness. The rest of the furniture and décor is kept natural, to create a relaxing effect. The focal point we have chosen is a colourful painting, scaled to match the size of the furniture and balancing the source of natural lighting. The Garden Design process
A
t Modular we believe garden design is the most exciting of all the design disciplines, but we would say that! As well as a beautifully designed garden being an inviting and practical space it’s increasingly viewed as a haven to immerse ourselves in; somewhere to escape the stresses of everyday life and connect with the natural world. The stats prove it can also significantly add value to your property so investing in it is a win-win. The bigger picture. A garden should work on many levels. Developing a great garden is rewarding for some, but frustrating for others. Perhaps you’ve lived with the same outdoor space for years yet are still way off realising your dream garden or have recently bought a property with a garden or roof terrace and just don’t know where to start? Setting off on the right track with a vision and plan is critical to its success. Good design marries the clients brief (style/function), with the build and planting budget to create a space that is greater than the sum of its parts.

VICTORIA CURLING-ERIKSSON’S STYLE AND PRACTICE Victoria’s earthy compositions capture the different seasons, light, and energy of ranging topographies.
