Alison Henry Design Studio Transforms Historic Belgravia Property into a Modern Marvel

Alison Henry Design Studio unveils its latest triumph, a stunning transformation of a historic London Georgian Villa and corresponding Mews House, situated in the prestigious neighbourhood of Belgravia. Today, the estate stands as a beacon of timeless luxury and contemporary sophistication, earning some fanfare in 2023 after its restoration for being the second most expensive property in the neighbourhood.

Led by Alison Henry, renowned for her visionary approach to interior architecture, the project breathed new life into the once tired and outdated estate. Despite facing challenges such as planning hurdles and preservation orders, the studio’s unwavering commitment to excellence prevailed, culminating in the completion of this spectacular project in summer 2021.

“I work in a sense of elegance and grandeur into every space I design.”

From the grand drawing room with its lush and enchanting garden views to the show-stopping, glass encapsulated kitchen, this home brings the outdoors in while exuding opulence and refinement.

The heart of the home, the kitchen features a collaboration between Alison Henry and kitchen designer Officine Gullo. The entire space is encapsulated in a double-height Crittal window and roof reminiscent of a palatial orangery, adorned with lush climbers and antique urns filled with camellia.

Another notable highlight is the master en suite, which emanates a warm and airy ambiance thanks to its glass roof which floods the space with natural light and has a captivating glass-box effect.

“We are incredibly proud of the transformation of this historic Belgravia property. Our goal was to honour its heritage while bringing it into the 21st century, creating a home that is both elegant and functional.”

Complementing the interiors, the garden serves as a seamless extension of the home, offering a serene retreat for relaxation and entertainment. Boasting classical metal furniture, a cozy lounge area around a carved gas fireplace, and an Officine Gullo X Alison Henry

Design barbecue setup, the garden mirrors Alison’s signature style with whitewashed walls and large hand-cut mirrors, creating a cohesive and inviting outdoor space.

The Mews House, blending contemporary design elements with Georgian architecture, features a restored staircase rescued from the original main house. Throughout the meticulous restoration process, Alison Henry Design Studio remained committed to preserving the property’s historic charm while infusing it with modern amenities.

“Bringing the outside in creates a calm, naturally beautiful, and nurturing elegant space.” Timeless design is behind everything I have done in my career. I believe in designing well, and with passion. This ideology has carried me from hotel and house project to boat and product design”. - Alison Henry

Established in 2022, the Summer Run provides owners of pioneering pre-1905 vehicles with an opportunity to enjoy their cars in the run-up to the annual RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, taking place every November.

The 2024 Summer Run will once again be based at the RAC’s Woodcote Park clubhouse, 350 acres of wonderful countryside adjacent to the Epsom Downs in Surrey. The unique appeal and significance of the London to Brighton Run attracts more than 400 entries from all over the world. JUMEIRAH CARLTON TOWER LAUNCHES NEW AFTERNOON TEA

Inspired by Highgrove House

& Gardens

Jumeirah Carlton Tower is delighted to announce its new afternoon tea in concept with Highgrove House & Gardens, the iconic gardens developed by His Majesty King Charles III. Launching on 14 June the afternoon tea will bring guests a seasonal, botanically inspired experience that champions sustainability and seasonality, in a celebration of the very best of British produce.

The new offering will further elevate Jumeirah Carlton Tower award-winning ‘A Tribute to Nature’ afternoon tea, taking inspiration from the most iconic of British gardens to deliver an experimental take on the classic British tradition in a sophisticated display of flavour. Working with locally sourced, seasonal produce, the afternoon tea will explore the best ingredients available in England through a carefully curated selection of imaginative dishes that pay tribute to the rich flavours of nature.

Over four decades, His Majesty King Charles III has devoted much energy to developing Highgrove House & Gardens into the innovative space it is today, with each of the interlinked series of gardens reflecting his own personal interests and enthusiasms.

Jumeirah Carlton Tower has chosen Highgrove due to an admiration of His Majesty’s passion for the earth and consistent sustainability efforts – values which the hotel deeply respects.

The carefully curated afternoon tea menu incorporates a selection of classically British savoury dishes, such as a coronation chicken sandwich in a nod to the gardens’ royal connection, before delving into a unique scone experience with four flavours of scone, including a scone served with honey crumble and thyme sour cream to represent Highgrove’s work with bees. Guests will then enjoy a selection of pastries inspired by garden ingredients, including a rosemary lavender strawberry tart adorned with decoration made from strawberry wastage, before ending with three royal-inspired cakes – a Queen Victoria sponge favoured by Queen Camilla, His Majesty’s own favourite fruit cake, and a chocolate biscuit cake inspired by the late Queen Elizabeth II’s preferred sweet treat, which was also served at the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Gianluca Priori, General Manager at Jumeriah Carlton Tower says: “We are incredibly excited to be launching our new and exclusive afternoon tea inspired by His Majesty King Charles III’s Highgrove House & Gardens. Using seasonal produce and true British flavours and ingredients we are looking forward to welcoming guests and visitors into the hotel to experience this marvellous offering.”

WILLIAM PAINTS LONDON

William Thomas, a self-taught UK artist, has had a prolific and diverse career spanning over two decades. His artistic journey is marked by an evolving exploration of natural and urban landscapes, blending traditional and modern elements to create visually compelling and emotionally resonant works.

William’s early years were spent honing his skills in London, where he moved in his early twenties. Despite his urban base, William’s passion for nature drew him frequently to the French Alps. The snow-capped peaks and serene landscapes of Verbier, Val D’Isere, and Tignes became significant sources of inspiration, leading to some of his most acclaimed works. His paintings of these mountainous regions are known for their grand scale and meticulous detail, capturing the majestic beauty of the natural world.

William’s ability to convey the essence of his subjects is evident in his large-scale paintings on canvas. These works often depict dynamic scenes of sailing boats navigating through turbulent seas, with transient sea spray and waves adding a sense of movement and vitality. His landscapes are not merely representations of nature but are infused with the emotions and experiences of his travels.

Beyond nature, William’s repertoire includes striking depictions of historical London landmarks. His portrayals of St. Paul’s Cathedral and other iconic structures blend the old with the new, reflecting the ever-changing face of the

city. These works showcase his ability to balance historical reverence with contemporary vibrancy, creating a dialogue between past and present.

One of William’s unique contributions to the art world is his “Icons Range,” a collection that pays homage to iconic artifacts and moments from the past. This series evokes playful nostalgia and appreciation for history, making it a favourite among art enthusiasts and history buffs. Each piece in this collection serves as a portal to bygone eras, capturing the timeless charm and significance of historical objects and events.

In addition to his larger paintings, William has also ventured into smaller situational works, particularly through his West End Theatre series. This collection captures the essence of London’s theatre district, transforming moments of architectural grandeur and theatrical energy into captivating visual stories. Using vibrant inks, William creates artworks that bridge the gap between reality and the surreal, adding depth and emotion to each scene.

William’s nomadic lifestyle, driven by his love for travel, has significantly impacted his artistic style. His ability to immerse himself in different environments and cultures is reflected in the diversity of his work. Whether surrounded by the bustling urban landscape of London or the tranquil beauty of the French mountains, William finds inspiration in his surroundings, continually pushing the boundaries of his artistic expression.

Throughout his career, William has held numerous gallery shows in both London and

France, consistently receiving acclaim for his ambitious and large-scale works. His dedication to capturing the essence of his subjects, whether through the grandeur of nature or the historical significance of urban landmarks, has solidified his place in the contemporary art scene.

William Thomas’ journey as an artist is a testament to his skill, originality, and passion for his craft. His works continue to captivate audiences, offering a blend of technical mastery and emotional depth that resonates with viewers. As he continues to explore new themes and techniques, William remains a vital and influential figure in the world of art, inspiring future generations with his unique vision and artistic achievements. myarto.co.uk

AHEAD OF THE V&A OPENING ITS MULTIFACETED EXHIBITION, NAOMI – WE UNCOVER THE MODEL’S MOST ICONIC LAYERED LOOKS. BY LARA OWEN

NAOMI CAMPBELL’S

STYLISH

LIFE

IN LAYERS AS SHE CELEBRATES 40 YEARS IN FASHION AT THE V&A

The V&A is launching a new exhibition that explore the life and career of supermodel Naomi Campbell.

With a selection of her archival pieces, the exhibit, NAOMI, goes beyond fashion, diving deeper into Campbell’s layered career, activism and cultural reach.

Open to the public from June 22, it provokes impressive, sensitive and evocative stages of Campbell’s life.

To celebrate, here are some of those moments embodied in iconic outfits, peeling back the layers of her life in looks.

Vivienne Westwood tartan suit

Meeting on a Los Angeles photoshoot in 1992, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss were among the founders of the Nineties supermodels. Campbell’s outfit pictured at the end of London Fashion Week perfectly encapsulated how many layers there were to come of the young model.

Against Moss’ fairly reserved monochromatic look, Campbell’s overlapping tartan suit paired with ultramarine accessories and a hot pink feather boa were emblematic of the 23-year-old’s rebellious and carefree spirit.

Newspaper and dollar bills dress

From then on, there was no stripping back for Campbell. The following year she modelled a wedding dress made entirely of newspapers and dollar bills at the Harvey Nichols and Perrier New Generation Designers Show.

Perhaps the perfect choice for the rising star who was making leaps and bounds in her career whilst having a tumultuous relationship with the press. The abundance of ruffled newspapers were symbolic of how the mainstream press disguised what the model felt was the real Naomi.

Hair flick and fringe

Alongside copious clothes – wigs and extensions have been a part of Campbell’s canon throughout her career. Routinely shifting her image required flexibility; thus layering extensions over wigs and intense styling contributed to bald patches.

Telling the Evening Standard in 2017, “I lost a lot of [my hair] with extensions,” she revealed, “I am more careful and do things differently.” Campbell dismissed the idea of black hair as a political issue, noting that “everybody in the world wears wigs… I do whatever the job calls for”. Campbell’s persevering attitude unveiled a deep insight into the model’s ambition.

Frills and ruffles

Layering doesn’t mean covering up. In 2004, Naomi sported a sheer tiered mini dress at the Louis Vuitton party for the brand’s fall/winter collection. The bohemian ruffles and natural hair evoked a more laid-back countenance in Campbell. The neutral colour palette, eclectic accessories and sheer bodice foreshadow some of the model’s relaxed future looks.

Deconstructing her image

The year 2017 saw Campbell taking a more structured and straightforward approach. Angularly layering suit trousers, skirts and formal lapels, this look symbolises Campbell’s ability to do it all.

Integrating bold accessories in the form of fishnet tights and a bejewelled nose ring epitomised Campbell’s chameleon-like character. Whilst the layering seemed disjointed, she held it all together with her poised persona.

Remembering her roots

Whilst mainly sporting simple silhouettes and muted hues, Campbell reminded the world that she is never predictable at the 2019 MET Gala. The model harked back to her feather boa frolics with this pale pink Valentino gown – a piece featured in the coming exhibition.

Themed ‘Camp’ Campbell imbued the freedom to be oneself and bearing all through this sheerly layered look. Offering strength in the form of a bold feathered cape and fragility through lace tights, Campbell’s look was unapologetically authentic, revealing her true disposition.

Sleek and simple with Dolce and Gabbana

As Campbell enters her fifth decade, the model is leaning into bearing all. When walking for Dolce Gabbana FW 2024 show, she once again sported an all black outfit which experimented with textures and opacity through its use of lace, silk and mesh.

Using the most delicate of fabrics, this look evoked a vulnerability in Campbell, as the mourning veil almost disguised her face of true emotion. It seems the supermodel has become more comfortable in simple silhouettes and monochrome palettes, as she continues to reveal more of herself, whilst always leaving a protective facade: in this case, one of a mesh veil. vam.ac.uk/exhibitions/naomi

The Builder’s Arms

Aproper, traditional local Chelsea pub,

The Builders Arms originally opened in the early 19th century just off the Kings Road as a place to house the builders of the nearby St Luke’s Church. Tucked away in a charming residential street, the pub is part of Cubitt House, the hugely successful central London-based group of pub/dining rooms from husband-and-wife owners Georgie and Sam Pearman. (Other pubs in their portfolio, all of which have garnered both customer and critical acclaim, include The Barley Mow Mayfair, The Orange in Belgravia, The Alfred Tennyson, The Thomas Cubitt, The Grazing Goat, The Coach Makers Arms, and The Princess Royal (in Notting Hill).

The combination of great hospitality with excellent food and drink in smartly designed spaces has proved a huge hit in each of the neighbourhood locations. Their vision has been to create modern pubs with character. The day-to-day operation and food vision is overseen by the group’s Chef Director Ben Tish.

The menu is a comforting range of classic British dishes. Highlights of the current menu include starters such as Roasted queen scallops with chorizo and Jersey Royals; Steak tartare with egg yolk and pecorino; Burrata with bitter leaves and salt-baked beets; and Globe artichoke with Gordal olive vinaigrette. Main courses range from Hereford steak with chimichurri, to Roasted monkfish tail with mussels, nduja and white bean broth; and a hugely popular Cheeseburger with fries. Dessert treats feature Timperley rhubarb and apple crumble; Lemon tart with raspberry sorbet and redcurrant sauce; Dark Belgian chocolate torte; and Sticky toffee pudding with ginger ice cream. (Note: 25p from each dessert is donated to the charity Social Bite.)

Sunday lunch is a British institution, and The Builders Arms takes it seriously, adding Roast Glenarm Shorthorn beef with Yorkshire pudding; Slow roast pork with white beans; or Roast Cotswolds half chicken (with roast potatoes).

The Builders Arms combines two spaces – the dining room on the left, the pub/bar to the right. Colourful fabrics, prints, objets d’art and quirky fittings give this British gastropub a warm and inviting feel, whatever the season. There is a fireplace in the bar area, and an attractive new outdoor terrace at the front for milder days.

While beer is a draw – with a commendable selection of drafts and cask ales – there is also a short, well-chosen selection of house cocktails, and a wine list encompassing over 20 wines by the glass. Open daily, throughout the day, the pub hours are Noon-10.30pm Monday-Saturday, and until 9.30pm on Sunday. The kitchen operates from Noon-9.30pm Monday-Saturday, and until 6pm on Sunday. Dogs welcome!

Painting by British artist Leonora Carrington sells for record £22.8m

Apainting by Lancashire-born artist Leonora Carrington has sold for more than £22 million. Sotheby’s says the sale of Carrington’s Les Distractions de Dagobert means she is the most valuable British-born female artist at auction.

The work was bought for 28.5 million US dollars (£22.48 million) after a ten-minute bidding battle – which Sotheby’s said exceeded Carrington’s previous record of 3.3 million US dollars (£2.6 million), set in the auction house in 2022.

The painting has been acquired by Argentine businessman Eduardo F Costantini, founder of the Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires, at the sale at Sotheby’s modern auction in New York.

Mr Costantini said:

“An iconic painting, The Distractions of Dagobert is one the most admired works in the history of surrealism and an unparalleled masterpiece of Latin American art.

“I was the underbidder when she reached the artist’s record 30 years ago and tonight once again, we made a new auction record.

amongst others, two important works by Remedios Varo and another record-breaking Frida Kahlo are also found.”

Painted two years after Carrington’s arrival in Mexico in 1945, the psychedelic scenes are inspired by the life of Frankish ruler Dagobert, who lived in the seventh century.

It shows a variety of moments including extinct volcanoes, a lake of fire engulfing an inverted idol and a watery world where a giant with a double animal head holds a human-faced puffer fish.

Carrington was born in Lancashire on April 6, 1917 and later lived in Mexico alongside other female surrealists including Kahlo and Remedios Varo.

She died in 2011 at the age of 94.

The award-winning St Dunstan’s College celebrates Oxbridge success

This year, St Dunstan’s College is celebrating after six students have been offered places at Oxbridge

Speaking about the Oxbridge success, Head Nick Hewlett, said: ‘The whole College is delighted with this news, and many congratulations to the students for their hard work and commitment throughout the application process and as they prepare for their final examinations this summer.

Dita, who has been offered a place to read English Literature at Corpus Christi, Oxford, said: ‘I was really happy to receive an offer, the interviews had been so enjoyable and so I was just excited at the prospect of being able to continue discussing and learning from these academics.

‘I also want to thank the Futures team for their support during this period, and we look forward to celebrating all our Sixth Formers’ offers as they come in over the coming weeks. I also look forward to recognising Year 13’s achievements at the Sixth Form Graduation Ceremony next term.’

Samuel, who has been offered to read Classics at Balliol, Oxford, said: ‘I am absolutely thrilled, I cannot wait to immerse myself in Literae Humaniores and be taught by the hefty names that populate my bookshelves.’

He added: ‘My thanks to the school are vast and absolute: without the generous bursary and scholarship that have allowed me to attend St Dunstan’s, I would have never stepped foot in a Latin classroom nor be in a position to apply to Oxford, let alone receive an offer.

‘I am especially grateful to Ms Butryn and her wonderful Classics department - who have unfalteringly shared their passion, encouragement, and support throughout all my time here - as well as the Oxbridge team for being a steady tiller in the deadline sea.’

‘The school has been really thorough in helping us at every stage of the application. Everything was always prepared and thought out well in advance, and we were given lots of guidance for all aspects of the process, from personal statements, to interviews and entrance exams.’

The Oxbridge offers come at an exciting time for the school. In 2022, St Dunstan’s was named Independent Senior School of the Year at the Tes Schools Awards, and last year, was awarded Most Progressive Independent School in London at the Private Education Awards.

Last year, St Dunstan’s also celebrated record-breaking A-Level results, outside of Covid grading, with 86% of all grades being A*- B and 58% A*/A, with 95% of students gaining places at their chosen universities.

ROSEMEAD PREPARATORY SCHOOL AND NURSERY WINS PRESTIGIOUS EDUCATION AWARD

Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery is delighted to reveal it has won an award at the prestigious Education Choices Awards 2024.

The school, located in the heart of Dulwich, has been awarded for best Improvements in EDIB (Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging) at the awards which were announced on Friday 14 June in London.

Speaking about the news, Head Graeme McCafferty explained: ‘The whole school is thrilled to receive this award. This recognition reaffirms our commitment to providing the best possible education for every child at Rosemead, and I couldn’t be prouder of our school’s achievement.

‘My heartfelt thanks go to the staff, pupils and parents who have been on this journey with us in the last year.’

A spokesperson for the Education Choices Awards added: ‘We have been really impressed with the work that schools have been getting up to this year in order to envelop Equality, Diversity and Inclusion into their curriculums and work, and it has been really tough to decide each winner.’

The award comes at an exciting time for the Rosemead community. In November, the school was praised in its inspection report following a visit from the Independent Schools Inspectorate.

The inspection celebrated Rosemead’s academic approach to learning, pastoral care and support and the positive influence of the school’s values, vision, and leadership.

‘A highly customised approach to every pupil’s academic progress is a significant strength of the school,’ the report explained. ‘A customised learning programme in mathematics, English and reasoning caters for pupils in Year 4 and above. This, supported by an extensive enrichment programme and much support for individuals, impacts on all groups of pupils, enabling them to make good and often rapid progress over time.’

Last year, the school announced a merger with St Dunstan’s College joining St Dunstan’s Community of Schools.

St Dunstan’s Group Head, Nick Hewlett, said: ‘The whole community is delighted with this award for Rosemead. The award rightly recognises the outstanding education Rosemead is offering as one of south London’s leading prep schools. Bringing our schools together has been a wonderful opportunity, allowing our staff and students to work closer together, learning from one another and enhancing our students’ educational journeys.’

Find out more about Rosemead’s award-winning education at their open morning on Saturday 12 October 2024.

Friday 13 – Sunday 15 September 2024

For one weekend only, 30 floral designers will be given the freedom to run wild at Strawberry Hill House.

In the 6th iteration of the annual Flower Festival, leading designers will respond to the theme of “nature unbound”. There will be no tidying or pruning as the space is given over to the immense beauty and power of the natural world. Expect stunning floral designs that twist and turn and fill the chambers and stairways of the Gothic Castle.

The exhibitors are drawn from across the UK and beyond, including up-and-coming designers excelling in cutting-edge creativity. The flowers are homegrown too, highlighting the most beautiful varieties that Britian has to offer.

At the heart of the display are sustainable practices utilising the latest floristry techniques. The flowers are either grown by the artists themselves or are sourced from local farmers and other sustainable businesses. No floral foam or single-use plastics are involved, with the only waste being a large compost heap. Founder of Blooming Green Bek Bibby is also giving an illustrated talk on the “no dig” method of flower growing, which enriches the soil without disrupting it.

A programme of events will be held to accompany the festival and allow visitors a special insight into the beautiful displays. This includes an evening tour and talk with Royal florist Simon Lycett along with a free glass of fizz, and curator tours throughout the long weekend led by Leigh Chappell with coffee and croissants.

There is a fascinating look at Ikebana, the centuries old Japanese flower-arranging art, demonstrations of how to dry wildflowers to make them weightless and wonderful, and an open discussion with Gardeners Question Time panelist Ashley Edwards on the role of plants in wellbeing, as well as many more events, talks and workshops throughout the weekend.

With no fake flowers, the very nature of the art means the show can only run for three days, and to protect the interior of the Grade I listed building there are also limited tickets available so make sure you don’t miss out by visiting the website and booking now.

The Festival is a fitting flowery end to the summer at Strawberry Hill, following the incredible exhibition showcasing two masterpieces by Jan van Huysum that ends on 8 September. And as always, there are five-acres of Grade II listed gardens on offer to Strawberry Hill visitors, comprising beds, borders, walks, groves, lawns and woodland that have been painstakingly restored faithfully following the plans of Horace Walpole through his writing, as well as drawing on 18th century maps and paintings.

Nature Unbound is curated by Leigh Chappell & Janne Ford and sponsored by Savills Teddington.

SUMMER MAKE-UP TRENDS YOU’LL WANT TO TRY

From bold neon eyes to sun-kissed skin, these are the beauty trends to look out for. By

With summer round the corner, freshen up your usual beauty routine with these new make-up trends, which are set to be popular this season. Celebrities are already hitting the red carpets with on-trend rosy doll cheeks and bold neon eyeliner, and beauty experts are on hand to show us how we can give the new looks a go at home.

Here are the summer make-up trends you’ll want to try for yourself…

Bold

neon

eyes

The top trend for this summer is neon, so don’t be afraid to go bold with your looks using neon eyeliner and eyeshadows. They are the look to go for this season, says Rachael Divers, resident make-up artist at Face The Future. She suggests using brightly coloured eyeliners or eyeshadows to create a striking winged liner or a bold wash of colour on the lids.

Wet look

Beauty lovers are opting for a fresh, dewy aesthetic and ‘glass’ or ‘wet’ skin is everywhere in summer 2024, says beauty expert Hayley Walker, a make-up artist for Justmylook. “This look can be achieved using cream, liquid and glossy formulas that create a dewy glow. To heighten the look, moisturise and hydrate during your skincare routine before applying make-up to achieve a smooth canvas,” she says. “A hydrating mask or hyaluronic acid creams work perfectly for this. As part of your make-up routine to achieve a wet-skin look, opt for a serum, lightweight foundation that provides a moisture boost and a smooth, natural-looking finish. A liquid highlighter is useful here as it enhances a dewy, luminous finish.” The look aims to create a glowing, luminous complexion, leaving you with a wet, glass appearance.

Sun-kissed

The minimal make-up sun-kissed look is a must-try for the summer,

with many opting for a natural, bronzed finish. Moisturising and applying SPF are essential to create a soft, fresh-faced look and Walker advises to opt for a lightweight serum foundation to ensure a natural-looking base, avoiding full-coverage, matte-based products. “Tinted moisturisers work well for this look for a minimal, bronzed finish. Apply cream blusher to enhance the natural, no-makeup appearance, imitating sun-kissed cheeks. Opt for gloss or lip balm instead of lipstick here and finish the look with a hydrating setting spray.”

Smokey eyes

Grunge is back for the summer and you can make a statement with a bold look by adding dark eyeshadow into your make-up routine. Divers shares that “lived-in liner” is gaining popularity, with smudged and smokey eyeliner looks adding an effortless edge to any make-up style. Walker tells us how to get the aesthetic by carefully blending dark eyeshadow from the outer corner of your eyes into the

crease. “Blend this well to your preferred intensity; remember to be bold with this look. Next, apply an eyeliner, which can be liquid or pencil. Start from the outer corners of your eye and work your way inward. This will enhance the look, deepening the smokey effect. Finish the look with mascara.”

Doll blush

Doll-like rosy pink cheeks are trending this summer and Walker shares how you can achieve the look. “You can perfect this look using cream or matte blush, however, I recommend opting for a cream-based blush to create a smooth, fresh-faced finish. Apply a light layer of pink, rosy blush onto the apples of your cheeks to bring colour to your face. Enhance the look with a highlighter for a subtle shine effect.”

SSUMMER FOOTWEAR TRENDS TO STRIDE OUT IN

Put your best foot forward in these funky designs. By Rikki Loftus

tep into summer in style with some of the biggest trends in footwear. From tennis-core trainers to chunky platform sandals, this summer’s shoes combine comfort with bold styles.

Here are the shoes that you will see everywhere this season…

Mary-Janes

The versatile Mary-Janes are making a comeback this summer in different variations – single or double strapped and different heel heights, from flats to high and both matt and patent uppers, says Simon Wilson, director of Deichmann. The key style can be worn for any occasion – flat Mary-Janes can complete a casual daytime outfit, while a heel can elevate an evening look.

Tennis-core

Comfort is the style of the season with a revival of tennis shoes for SS24. This chic yet sporty vibe is set to be a key trend, says shoe expert Paul Donnelly from Heavenly Feet. “The pared-back athletic luxe look celebrates crisp shirts, linen shorts, polos and a perfectly clean pair of white trainers or plimsolls,” he says. “Make use of lightweight soles and shoes that will complement multiple colour schemes and outfits. For ultimate versatility, a trainer will offer all-day style points, or a comfortable sandal gives ease of wear throughout the day or night.”

Metallic look

Metallic panelling is a key trend according to Wilson, who says you can rock it on a casual sneaker as well as heels. It’s a bold choice that you can opt to include subtlety with metallic panelling along the sides of your trainers, or a statement shoe you can make the focal point of your ensemble.

Wedge sandals

Wedge sandals are a timeless summer shoe that can be paired with holiday looks from day to night. Raffia wedge sandals are particularly in fashion as the weather heats up, says Wilson, adding: “Some of the biggest trends we’re seeing this summer are raffia and woven materials across a range of styles from espadrilles to heeled sandals.”

Bright and bold colours

Bright sandals are particularly on-trend, according to expert Rachel Clinkard, eCommerce Director at Charles Clinkard. From lime and orange to bright pink, Clinkard says that vibrancy is the way forward for SS24 footwear. “It’s going to be all about bright colours for summer,” she says. “A pop of colour in your shoes and accessories pairs perfectly with a simple outfit.”

THE EVOLUTION OF RACING FASHION

Ascot was last month, so Lara Owen looks at the changing style of race-day fashion.

Since its inception, race-day fashion has been as integral to Royal Ascot as its horses. The Ascot Racecourse was founded in 1711 by Queen Anne. For decades, it’s been a highlight of the fashion calendar, giving royals and British socialites the opportunity to show off their style.

Here’s how the fashion has evolved over the past 100 years…

The royal inception

The roaring Twenties saw the emergence of fanciful flapper dresses. The liberality of the 1920s was reflected in the racing fashion as women’s dresses became shorter and looser. More comfortable clothing was embraced, which contradicted the grandiosity of the Victorian era. The attendance of royals such as Lord Cecil Manners and his wife demonstrated the nonchalance of Ascot style, broaching a new decade of racing fashion.

Ruffles and riches of the Fifties

Following the utilitarian structures of the 1940s, post-war Ascot saw feminine fabrics and silhouettes reign supreme. The introduction of Christian Dior’s ‘New Look’ saw fuller skirts and cinched waists, allowing guests to elevate racecourse style with exaggerated silhouettes, hemlines and hats.

This was before strapless and sheer dresses were prohibited in the official dress code. Florals and botanicals became signature styles for the summer season, particularly seen in the late Queen’s outfit to the 1955 event.

Fit and flare in the 1970s

Bold prints, relaxed cuts and a bohemian aesthetic was distinctive of Seventies fashion. Reflected at Royal Ascot, guests began to dress in more laidback ways evocative of the 1920s.

While florals remained a signature staple, women experimented with wide-leg trousers, jumpsuits and excessive floppy hats.

Dubbed the ‘Mascot of Ascot’, hat designer Gertrude Shilling sparked interest for her eccentric and attention-grabbing looks on race day. Her audacious designs were a drastic move from previous styles and marked an era of racing fashion that celebrated individuality and personal style.

Shilling wasn’t the only attendee breaking with tradition, as women renounced

SABRINA ELBA

dresses in favour of suits, shorts and jumpsuits, after trousers were added to the Royal Enclosure dress code in 1971. Nowadays, shorts are no longer permitted in any enclosure.

The introduction of stealth wealth

Following the exaggerated silhouettes of the Eighties, the 1990s race attire was anchored by Diana, Princess of Wales’ bold yet understated style. Traditional dress codes began to be heavily adhered to, but guests experimented in pushing boundaries by clashing contemporary and traditional pieces.

Characterised by what we now call ‘quiet luxury’, the 1990s combined simplistic and sophisticated tailoring with avant-garde accents. Ascot attendees found ways to incorporate their own personal style into modest ensembles.

Structured silhouettes and fluid fashion

The 2010s saw the acceptance of jumpsuits, and in 2017 fashion designer Daisy Knatchbull became the first woman to wear a top hat and tails in the Royal Enclosure.

As a result, sharp tailoring later became encouraged for women in Ascot’s style guide, reflecting a more androgenous and fluid approach to fashion.

The present day

Royal appearances have become leading sources of inspiration for race-day fashion. The Princess of Wales is a regular face at Ascot, setting trends for vintage prints and silhouettes balanced by monochromatic palettes.

Although the majority of attendees still adhere to its traditionally elegant and conservative attire, guests are certainly becoming more fluid by incorporating skirt suits, asymmetric cuts and structured tailoring into their ensembles. It seems the 2020s are the years of classic tailoring and individual accents, and 2024 should provide a smorgasbord for unique expression.

CYCLE TO SAVE LIVES THIS SEPTEMBER

This September, hundreds of cyclists will descend on the streets and trails of Berkshire to take on an epic cycling fundraising challenge – Prostate Cancer UK’s Big Blue Bike Ride.

On Sunday, September 8th, The Big Blue Bike Ride will see riders taking on either 40 or 65 miles, raising money to beat the most common cancer in men.

Setting off from Windsor Racecourse, those cycling 40 miles – the Classic route – will navigate the streets of the historic market town before crossing the Thames into Eton, later entering the Thames Valley and Chiltern Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

“The Big Blue Bike Ride will see riders taking on either 40 or 65 miles, raising money to beat the most common cancer in men”

Those tackling the Epic – 65 miles - will explore more of the Chiltern Hills before both sets of cyclists visit Henley-on-Thames.

All cyclists can then ride, reflect and remember at the Mile for Men; a stretch at Dorney Common dedicated to all the dads, brothers, partners, grandads, sons, uncles and mates affected by prostate cancer. The fundraising peloton will then triumphantly cross the finish line back in Windsor, where cyclists can enjoy the ride’s event village.

The money raised will go towards funding vital research into lifesaving treatments for prostate cancer and providing practical support to men and their families affected by the disease, which affects one in eight men in the UK.

One of those men is Rob Abell, from Ascot. Rob completed the ride’s Epic route last year just 11 months after being successfully treated for prostate cancer – and he’s taking the ride on again this year.

“I was inspired to get back on the bike again as soon as I could, get fit, get some mates together and give something back,” he said.

“We loved the ride so much; it was such a well-organised event, with clear signage, route maps, helpful stewards, good snack provisions and water bottle refill points along the way, and a huge sense of achievement at the end. It’s a friendly, fun and inclusive event, not a hardcore sportive, so you can enjoy it your way whilst supporting a great cause.”

5 OF THE BEST at Three days of design

It’s that time when the eyes of furniture fans around the world swivel north, as annual Danish design spectacular 3daysofdesign showcases the best and freshest interior ideas coming out of the Scandi nations and beyond. With renowned luxury behemoths sharing the spotlight with emerging talents, it’s where every Nordic name worth knowing gathers.

ANAGRAM SOFA - VITRA

Based on the premise that everyday living has evolved past being focused on – and positioned around – the television and now needs to cater to an increasing array of activities, the Anagram Sofa by Swiss design studio Panter&Tourron was born. Created for its layout to be reinvented time and time again, this is a seating system deeply imbued with adaptability.

“The characterful Monolit chair by Danish designer Cecilie Manz is composed of a wrap-around back rest shell”

For its 11th year, the festival is bigger and bolder than ever. Enveloping Copenhagen’s shops, studios, streets and show spaces with refined and forward-thinking furniture as well as lighting, accessories, new materials and limited edition pieces in increasingly awe-inspiring exhibitions, it ignites a citywide celebration of extraordinary design across 11 districts.

RFH COLLECTION - &TRADITION

A partnership between &Tradition and the Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation has led to the return of the RFH furniture series, five distinctive designs created for The Festival of Britain at London’s Royal Festival Hall in 1951 as part of Day’s first major furniture commission.

While the designs have been sitting pretty in the concert hall, foyers and public spaces of the iconic cultural venue for over 70 years, this is the first time some pieces are available to purchase, while others haven’t been available for decades.

An ‘assortment of possibilities’ rather that a static object, Anagram is made up of a handful of modules and elements that can quickly and easily respond to daily needs, or lifestyles changes: from an exercise regime, sports final or cocktail hour to a house move or family resize. Oh, it’s ready for anything.

MONOLIT CHAIR - FRITZ HANSEN

Aesthetically in line with its namesake impressive stone structure, the characterful Monolit chair by Danish designer Cecilie Manz is composed of a wrap-around back rest shell which forms a protective and embracing wall around the sitter.

Its sculptural and slender profile raises majestically from the floor,

creating individual capsules of personal space that are both flexible and come-and-curl-up-here comfortable. Small design elements highlight its refined status, such as the linear piping around the seat which has a sharp, haute-couture feel in either full grain leather or coordinating with the upholstery, as well as the option for a contrasting inner colour (the outside remains monotoned to emphasise its statuesque silhouette) and the hardy, horseshoeshaped metal foot.

EAVE SEAMELINE SOFA - AUDO COPENHAGEN

Winding and meandering into the contemporary home of tomorrow is the Eave Seamline sectional sofa; a wave of alluring upholstered contours characterised by curves, clean lines and customisation.

Composed of architecturally-inspired concave and convex forms, it’s made up of nine pieces – from corner modules to chaise longue segments and open sections – that are waiting to be neatly fitted together and playfully slide and curl their way around a room, reacting to its specific shape and needs.

SETTLE OUTDOOR COLLECTIONMUUTO

No matter where you are, come rain or shine – nestle into Settle, the latest result of Muuto’s collaboration with Norwegian design duo Anderssen & Voll. Erasing the boundary between indoor and out, the upholstered all-weather seating range – which includes a cosy lounge chair, a neat two-seater and a generous threeseater – brings the softness and comfort of the living room into the fresh air, and the lightness and sense of freedom imbued into outdoor furniture inside.

“Today, many of us live in a way that blurs the lines between interior and exterior. These spaces support each other. You can see that in design, as the distinction between indoor and outdoor furniture becomes less clear. We bring the comfort of indoors out with us. So, we designed a sofa and lounge chair for spending the best of times outdoors,” says Espen Voll. chaplins.co.uk

Transform your Outdoor Space with Lighting for Gardens

Lighting for Gardens collaborate with garden designers, landscape architects and lighting installers to develop well-designed lighting schemes that can transform any garden and elevate the outdoor living experience. Lighting for Gardens supply the recognised Elipta brand lighting solutions for both commercial and residential outdoor lighting projects.

The team at Lighting for Gardens recently helped complete a garden project with unique characteristics, a mature space with large trees, a Garden Pod and lush shrubs. This offered the opportunity for creative lighting to be introduced. With the garden being secluded it meant uplights could be used to illuminate trees without disturbing neighbours.

The client had impressive ideas for the space and collaborated with the Lighting for Gardens team to develop the best lighting scheme. Our team and the client walked through the garden together discussing focal points, which areas should be lit, and which should remain in shadow. Leaving parts of the garden dark would create an illusion of depth, making the garden seem larger and more mysterious.

The Garden Pod was a perfect centrepiece, outside of which two recessed walkover lights were placed to cast a gentle glow on the ceiling inside the Pod through its front opening, creating a

welcoming yet mysterious ambiance.

A magnificent old Willow tree was a natural showstopper, with its craggy bark and pale green foliage. A Titan 45 large tree uplighter was placed close to the trunk, the light effect emphasising its textured bark and cascading leaves.

To ensure the garden’s lighting scheme felt cohesive, other features were given subtle attention using Elipta brand lights, with lowpower lights used throughout the scheme. The contrast between the brightest lights and the softer accents was striking. Most lights were fitted with glare shields to prevent any harshness, keeping the garden’s calm atmosphere.

On completion of the Elipta lighting project, the garden was transformed. The Pod and Willow tree stood well lit, and the garden paths led visitors through a landscape of light and shadow. Through collaboration with the team at Lighting for Gardens, the clients’ vision had come to life.

Transform Your Outdoor Space

Choose Bridgman for Timeless Luxury and Comfort

As the warmer months are finally here - now is the ideal moment to prepare your garden for basking in the sunshine. Your garden becomes an extension of your home, and the choice of furniture plays a pivotal role in creating a seamless transition from indoor comfort to outdoor relaxation. Ensuring you select the right pieces is paramount. Start by contemplating your outdoor furniture needs. Each space and lifestyle demand different requirements, so it’s crucial to identify these at the outset of your shopping journey.

Consider all the activities you envision for the space. If you anticipate warm evenings lounging with the family, a modular set might be the answer. Alternatively, for intimate al fresco dinner parties or brunches, a smaller dining set could be perfect. If feasible, we strongly advise seeing the furniture in person before purchasing it. Visiting a showroom allows you to closely examine the finish and materials, and even try out different collections. Come and experience our beautiful Bridgman showroom in Winchester, where our experienced design professionals can guide you toward the perfect furniture for your outdoor space, while you enjoy a relaxing cup of coffee.

Material choice is a significant aspect of buying garden furniture. Rope furniture, for example, is a contemporary addition to outdoor spaces, offering both style and durability. Rattan comes in various weaves and materials, catering to classic and contemporary aesthetics. Bridgman’s rattan furniture collections are expertly handwoven using only the finest synthetic weaves, ensuring longevity and

practicality. Aluminium, on the other hand, offers a modern touch. Lightweight and easy to maintain, it’s often used as a frame for other materials such as rattan or rope. Outdoor fabrics mark the next step in luxury outdoor living. The Bridgman selection boasts fabrics spun from solution-dyed acrylic, offering softness and comfort akin to indoor furniture, yet with unique fully waterproof and stain-resistant properties, as well as UV protection.

Bridgman doesn’t stop at outdoor furniture; they also offer a luxurious and comfortable collection of home furniture, including sofas, chairs, and sofa beds. Elevate your indoor space with the same level of luxury and comfort that you enjoy outdoors, with Bridgman’s exquisite home furniture collection.

You can find Bridgman at 10 City Road, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 8SD Telephone 01962 877695

INTRODUCING CÓFRA: Premium Cabinetry for Your Home

Luxury interior design knows no restraints with Cófra, who brought the latest launches at Milan’s Salone del Mobile Furniture Fair straight from their partnering factory in Ukraine to the Grand Designs show in London’s Excel last May. With an attendance of over 120,000 at the event, it proved to be the perfect springboard for Cófra to launch their new brand which focuses on offering European Oak furniture.

Cófra were thrilled to be selected by Simone Gordon, co-founder of East London’s Owl Design who overseen the interior design of the Grand House, a 900sqm build which took centre-stage at the exhibition. The house offered attendees the wow factor and provided them with the opportunity to explore stunning and innovative products, designed to educate and inspire. For Cófra, being singled out to work amongst the most renowned suppliers in the renovation and self-build industry was a fantastic honour and a testimony to the style and appeal of their pieces which enjoyed much attention during the 10-day event.

The new brand went from strength to strength following an endorsement from Kevin McCloud, who was particularly impressed by Cófra’s commitment in sourcing furniture from Ukraine. The Grand Designs host testified to the importance of supporting the country at this current time and thanked Cófra for their contribution. The entire catalogue of products are designed and

produced by two exceptional factories located in Western Ukraine near Lviv who continue to excel despite the challenges they face amidst the ongoing war. They create their own designs and have won numerous awards at exhibitions across Europe, including Paris. Interior designers and home enthusiasts alike fell in love with the collections, in particular with Só (featured opposite), which was the collection launched in Milan a mere 2 weeks before Grand Designs. It features a unique matte lacquer finish giving the impression of raw timber and adds a touch of natural elegance to any home. Within this collection, the standout piece is the oval dining table, which extends to 2.7m, comfortably seating 8-10 people. The accompanying chair is not only beautiful but also exceptionally comfortable. The rich tones and textures of this range allow it to complement a variety of interior styles. Cófra is delighted to be able to offer these beautiful products to the UK for the first time and are thrilled to bring their story to the readers of this magazine. cofrafurniture.com
