Claridge’s Presents THE PAINTER’S ROOM
The Painter’s Room, a bar on the ground floor of the five-star art deco landmark, Claridge’s, was conceived by interior designer Bryan O’Sullivan – and home to groundbreaking cocktails.
With a back story rich in art and design, The Painter’s Room is named as a homage to the same space at Claridge’s that was created in the 1930’s with murals by renowned artist Mary Lea.
The Painter’s Room is one of three bars, alongside the dark and glamorous Fumoir and the iconic Claridge’s Bar. Located in the space that bridges Claridge’s celebrated ballroom and the Talking Heads Gallery by Artist in Residence David Downton, The Painter’s Room is reimagined by Bryan O’Sullivan, inspired by old photos from the archives in the 1930’s.
The aesthetic pays tribute to the hotel’s Art Deco design heritage, with pale pink onyx featuring prominently. The bar, in this blush-coloured stone is the centrepiece, and is complemented by a feature skylight in peach and cream coloured glass.
British artist Annie Morris was specially commissioned to create an installation which runs across the entire space. Morris was inspired by the historic relationship between bars and artists, and how artists sit, observe, sketch and chat in bars and the mural reflects the free sketch style with which one would scribble on the back of a menu.
The drinks menu for The Painter’s Room has a focus on cocktails. Ingredients are at the core of this creative process – all deeply considered, with excess ingredients left behind, to result in drinks with flavours in their purest, simplest form. Signature snacks can also be

ART IN MAYFAIR RETURNS FOR A SUMMER OF VIBRANT FASHION, ART AND CULTURE
From 10 June - 7 July 2024
Art in Mayfair has announced its return for a four-week celebration of art, fashion, and culture in London’s renowned shopping and gallery enclave. Working in partnership with the Royal Academy of Arts, the showcase is timed to coincide with the annual Summer Exhibition which has been held consecutively since 1769 and this year, will also celebrate the completion of the Royal Academy Schools restoration and renewal project.
Brands across the destination area from Bond Street, Savile Row, and Mayfair will team up with artists and galleries to present pop-up installations, talks, walks, and special events.
RA Schools student Lizzie Munn has been selected to present this year’s prestigious Flag commission. This commission, now an annual highlight of Art in Mayfair, is a significant recognition of emerging talent in the art world. Visitors will see Munn’s work entitled ‘The sun speaks’ flying above Bond Street from 10 June onwards.
Munn’s work takes the form of large-scale print-based installations, which are often shaped by their environment. ‘The sun speaks’ will hang across this half mile stretch of street as a continuous installation with the surrounding architecture
and the elements becoming active components in the work. The installation will be sensitive to environmental shifts, particularly the sun’s movements throughout the day. Pushing the material possibilities of the flags, Munn introduces a metallic silver fabric which is responsive to light; the shimmering surfaces becomes a receptor of information animated by the sun. A new series of monotypes create the neon green flags which will flood Bond Street with luminous colour and demand attention in all conditions of light.
Lizzie Munn, artist said: “I’m excited to be involved with this year’s Art in Mayfair and to create a sprawling artwork with the sky as its backdrop. Populated by two visually high-pitched colours, I’ve employed both elements as active materials which are responsive to their site and conditions. The work will be constantly in flux, and always seen anew.” lizziemunn.co.uk
Many of the destination’s iconic fashion and jewellery brands will create art-inspired window installations, and visitors will be able to attend a host of fashion and art-lead experiences. newwestend.com

DOUBLE EXPOSURE: DAVID BAILEY & MARY MCCARTNEY
PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION OPENS IN CLARIDGE’S ARTSPACE CURATED BY BRANDEI ESTES. UNTIL 19TH JULY 2024
Claridge’s ArtSpace, located in the heart of Mayfair, is delighted to announce Double Exposure: David Bailey & Mary McCartney, a new photography exhibition bringing the works of these two major British photographers into direct dialogue for the first time in this unique John Pawson designed space.
Curated by Brandei Estes, this exhibition spans photographs from the 1960s to the present day – showcasing a mutual interest in reinventing portraiture alongside interconnected aesthetic concerns and a shared sensibility.
This marks the first occasion for Bailey to show with another photographer in London. Over the course of more than half a century,
iconic British photographer and director David Bailey has created some of the most notable fashion images in the medium, a prolific and tireless image-maker.
Celebrated worldwide for his inimitable, charged portraits, this exhibition includes images of celebrities of a halcyon bygone era, where glamour was still unattainable and distant.
Mirroring Bailey’s portraits of the celebrities of his era, McCartney has also captured her peers, the icons of her generation. A triptych of Kate Moss posturing and posing; a young and perfect Milla Jovovich, and a whimsical imagining of Harry Styles are among the portraits included in Double Exposure. Like Bailey, McCartney draws out an innate sense of theatricality in these world-famous figures, delighting in the performativity of photography – and evoking an atmosphere of fun.

THE RED ROOM AT THE CONNAUGHT
The Red Room bar at The Connaught, in the heart of Mayfair, is a homage to extraordinary female artists - a hideaway that guests discover through a velvet-curtained doorway from the hotel’s Champagne Room. This cocooning space showcases a collection of creative works in red - by four female visionaries, from one of the most celebrated of our time to a young Vietnamese artist.
Alongside the hotel’s renowned bars including The Connaught Bar, rated the world’s best, the Red Room is an entirely different experience for guests. Inside, a collection of art that has been years in the making awaits. Perhaps the most important piece hangs over the central marble fireplace, ‘I Am Rouge’ by celebrated FrenchAmerican artist Louise Bourgeois.
Another piece by Bourgeois is a ruby-red hologram, from an untitled series of 8 holographic pieces from 1998. California-based photographer Trina McKillen addresses themes of beauty and ugliness, spirituality and profanity and life and death through her work.
‘Composition #8’ is the only photographical piece amongst the collection. ‘Halfway to Sunset’ dominates another wall - an oil painting by Vietnamese Ti-a Thuy Nguyen from her series Floating in the Nothingness.
The bar is designed by Bryan O’Sullivan, who continues to put his signature stamp on Maybourne drinking spots – creating the space as a ‘home within a home’ with the feel of a collector’s living room –the ultimate sanctuary in magnificent Mayfair. A cocoon-like snug in ombre scarlet allows guests to sit in convivial anonymity.
Food and drink are at the heart of The Red Room, with an impressive list overseen by Daniel Manetti, Director of Wine. The Connaught’s legendary wine cellar features over 3000 different labels and over 30,000 bottles. Rare vintages and first growths arrive by custom-crafted marble trolley – accompanied by a capsule collection of six cocktails, each inspired by the wine selection and developed in tune with the changing seasons.
A menu of charcuterie – featuring British cheeses and hand-carved hams – including veal carpaccio, Gochuchang chicken oysters and kale tempura, has been designed to complement the wine list.
The Red Room operates a no reservation policy for all-day dining and drinks.

Painting by British artist Leonora Carrington sells for record £22.8m
Apainting by Lancashire-born artist Leonora Carrington has sold for more than £22 million. Sotheby’s says the sale of Carrington’s Les Distractions de Dagobert means she is the most valuable British-born female artist at auction.
The work was bought for 28.5 million US dollars (£22.48 million) after a ten-minute bidding battle – which Sotheby’s said exceeded Carrington’s previous record of 3.3 million US dollars (£2.6 million), set in the auction house in 2022.
The painting has been acquired by Argentine businessman Eduardo F Costantini, founder of the Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires, at the sale at Sotheby’s modern auction in New York.
Mr Costantini said:
“An iconic painting, The Distractions of Dagobert is one the most admired works in the history of surrealism and an unparalleled masterpiece of Latin American art.
“I was the underbidder when she reached the artist’s record 30 years ago and tonight once again, we made a new auction record.

Painted two years after Carrington’s arrival in Mexico in 1945, the psychedelic scenes are inspired by the life of Frankish ruler Dagobert, who lived in the seventh century.
It shows a variety of moments including extinct volcanoes, a lake of fire engulfing an inverted idol and a watery world where a giant with a double animal head holds a human-faced puffer fish.
Carrington was born in Lancashire on April 6, 1917 and later lived in Mexico alongside other female surrealists including Kahlo and Remedios Varo.
She died in 2011 at the age of 94.

The exhibition opens with high-impact clips of Campbell on the catwalk, illustrating her legendary ‘walk’, setting the scene for the supermodel’s unparallelled 40-year career.
Highlights will include a dramatic 1989 Thierry Mugler car-inspired corset, a pink Valentino ensemble worn at the 2019 Met Gala and a pair of staggeringly high Vivienne Westwood platform shoes worn by Campbell during her famous 1993 catwalk fall. The exhibition will include around 100 looks and accessories from the best of global high fashion chronicling her 40 years in the industry.
Visitors will encounter designs by Alexander McQueen, Burberry, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Gianni and Donatella Versace, Jean Paul Gaultier,

John Galliano, Karl Lagerfeld, Valentino, Vivienne Westwood, Yves Saint Laurent and many others. In addition, fashion photography features prominently. Striking imagery by leading photographers such as Campbell Addy, Nick Knight, Peter Lindbergh and Steven Meisel, will form a selection curated by Edward Enninful OBE.
The exhibition will also recognise Campbell’s mentors including prominent public figures such as Nelson Mandela, who inspired her to use her platform for social change. Campbell has advocated for equity from an early age, joining the Black Girls Coalition in 1989 and fronting the 2007 ‘black issue’ of Vogue

Italia. Along with Bethann Hardison and Iman, she has also campaigned for The Diversity Coalition since 2013 to champion diversity on the catwalk.
Becoming Naomi then goes back to Campbell’s childhood. Born in 1970, southLondoner Campbell aspired to a career on stage and performed in 1980s music videos for artists including Bob Marley and Culture Club. Her life changed when, aged 15, she was approached by model agent Beth Boldt while out shopping with schoolfriends; two years later she would be on the front cover of Vogue and walking for acclaimed designers in London, Paris, Milan and New York.
Examples of Campbell’s earliest covers will also be shown, including her Vogue Paris, Patrick Demarchelier cover from August 1988 – she was the first Black model to cover the magazine.
By the early 1990s, the term ‘Supermodel’, or model turned international celebrity, was widely used directly in reference to Naomi and a small group of peers. Fashion had become mass entertainment and Campbell, though still in her teens, was at the centre of this excitement.
Campbell unwittingly created fashion history in 1993 when, smiling, she fell to the runway floor while wearing Westwood’s staggeringly high blue platforms. The original pair, with the
model’s name written inside, were quickly acquired by the V&A.
Aged 17 Campbell moved to New York and threw herself into the city’s buzzing, social, fashion scene, forging enduring friendships with designers and others in the industry. Since the early 1990s Campbell has been one of the most high-profile models in the world – and one of the most recognisable black women. The Spotlight will explore a highly publicised moment, when Campbell served a period of court ordered community service.
On display is the Dolce & Gabbana gown that Campbell wore on her final day – a look she wore in response to the paparazzi capturing her arrival and departure every day throughout.
“Produced in collaboration with Campbell and foregrounding her voice and perspective, NAOMI: In Fashion will be the first exhibition of its kind”
Next it will look at Naomi Campbell as an exemplar in the field, and her early collaborations with many fashion houses - connections evolving into decades-long collaborative friendships. With over forty years of experience working with the leading names in fashion, Campbell is an archetype, whose skill and reputation as an exceptional model is indisputable.

THE BIG PICTURE
Vivienne’s Playing Cards, a project by The Vivienne Foundation
A LANDMARK LEGACY PROJECT FROM THE VIVIENNE FOUNDATION FOR GREENPEACE. 25TH JUNE 2024
Announced on the occasion of Dame Vivienne Westwood’s Birthday, Christie’s is honoured to announce a significant posthumous project conceived by the trailblazing British fashion designer and activist, to raise funds for Greenpeace.
Working with energy and impact until the end, one of Vivienne’s final acts was to sign 100 sheets of Hahnemühle Museum Etching paper, with the wish that ten of the most important graphics designed to highlight her messages as an activist would be printed onto these precious large-scale autographed ‘cards’ after her death.
These limited-edition playing cards are now to be offered for sale, continuing the campaigning work Vivienne was so well known for.
THE BIG PICTURE – Vivienne’s Playing Cards, created by The Vivienne Foundation for Greenpeace have been produced in a deluxe edition of ten portfolios, the first of which will be presented in a unique linen-covered hand-embroidered box, coming to auction at Christie’s on 25 June, with an estimate of £30,000-£50,000.
Vivienne Westwood often used the format of playing cards in her campaigns and designs, and Vivienne’s Playing Cards for Climate Revolution were originally conceived in 2017.
As Vivienne commented: “I want you to help me save the world, I can’t do it all on my own.”
Using strong graphics, Vivienne designed a set of playing cards depicting a culture-led economic strategy to save the world. Together these told a powerful story as well as being a call to action, considering the part we can all play in shaping the future.
It’s this powerful idea which was reimagined by Vivienne as a legacy project to follow her death, now presented in the limitededitions lovingly created in collaboration with Red Breast Editions, London.

THE ROYAL AUTOMOBILE CLUB SUMMER VETERAN CAR RUN 2024
Woodcote Park, Epsom, Thursday 18 July 2024
The Royal Automobile Club is delighted to confirm that this year’s eagerly anticipated Summer Veteran Car Run is making a welcome return.
Established in 2022, the Summer Run provides owners of pioneering pre-1905 vehicles with an opportunity to enjoy their cars in the run-up to the annual RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, taking place every November.
The 2024 Summer Run will once again be based at the RAC’s Woodcote Park clubhouse, 350 acres of wonderful countryside adjacent to the Epsom Downs in Surrey. The magnificent veteran cars will assemble for morning refreshments before a leisurely departure onto the quieter roads of rural Surrey and Sussex heading for a pit stop and a well-earned lunch in a secluded location.
Participants can then enjoy a gentle return run to Woodcote Park for high tea followed by a light-hearted concours with unusual judging criteria followed by the prize-giving. The day’s proceedings conclude with alfresco drinks (weather permitting!), before the Club’s Executive Head Chef serves a summer feast in the historic Motor House.
The unique appeal and significance of the London to Brighton Run attracts more than 400 entries from all over the world. However, the Summer Run is open to just 30 petrol, steam or even electric pioneers, and this showpiece is certain to attract another full capacity of truly remarkable machines, all dating back 120 years to the
dawn of motoring.
“The Summer Run has proved to be a wonderful warm-up for the RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run and is now firmly established as one of the most enjoyable highlights on our calendar,” confirmed Ben Cussons, Chairman of the Royal Automobile Club.
“The warmer weather of the Summer Run provides participants with a more relaxed and sociable gathering at Woodcote Park, as well as a fabulous opportunity for veteran car owners to ready themselves and their cars for the main event later in the year. The camaraderie is exceptional and an ever-evolving route through the winding country roads will not only be enjoyed by the intrepid drivers and their passengers but also by those watching such a wonderful display of moving history.”
Full details of both the Summer Veteran Car Run and the 2024 RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run on Sunday 3 November are available at veterancarrun.com.

Skincare
with benefits
“Skincare is an essential part of my self-care routine,” says Leanna Zaman, beauty specialist at Boots. “It gives me a moment to pause for self-reflection after a busy day whilst my skin soaks up the benefits.” “If you don’t already have a conscious routine, try dedicating 10 minutes both morning and evening to prep your skin and reconnect with yourself,” suggests Zaman. “Your regime doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective – spend a few extra minutes massaging your moisturiser in,” advises Zaman. “Your skin will thank you, too.” Dr Mary Sommerlad, consultant dermatologist and Vichy Laboratories spokesperson agrees: “For a fresher skin appearance, I strongly recommend being consistent with an effective, evidence-based skincare routine.” She also suggests adding in a hydrating serum to plump the appearance of skin and boost radiance. Sommerlad says to then follow on with a moisturiser of choice targeted to your skincare concerns.
Wellbeing aromas
Don’t forget to consider body care as well as skincare, advises Zaman. “We’re seeing more consumers hack their dopamine levels by elevating their everyday beauty basics with mood-boosting scents, textures and colours too.” She suggests trying scented body butter and lotions with uplifting aromas. “Fragrance is a key part of

experiencing a product as it can transport us to another place, time or mindset.”
Shower and bath care
“Try switching up your daily routine in small ways to incorporate more wellbeing practices into your week,” suggests Zaman. “For example, simply swapping a morning shower for an indulgent evening bath adds another precious moment of self-care and renewal.” She says embracing aromatherapy stalwarts like essential oils can help you restore and relax too, transforming your daily soak into a relaxing ritual and spa-like experience. “I’m also a great believer in every time we have a bath, it’s an opportunity to make it a mini-spa moment!” enthuses Chrissie Rucker OBE, founder of The White Company. “At the end of a hectic day, you can’t beat a good relaxing soak, even if it’s only for 10 minutes. Light a favourite scented candle, pour in a lovely bath soak, dim the lights and relax.” She continues. “And then some time massaging in a deeply nourishing body lotion will also leave skin glowing before wrapping yourself in a snuggly robe.” Zaman agrees: “Incorporating scented candles into your night-time routine can also help create a tranquil atmosphere, calm your mind and promote rest.” She’s a fan of candles infused with sleep-inducing notes of lavender and soothing eucalyptus. “It’s a scent I associate with rest, so it helps me unwind for a perfect night’s sleep.“These simple sensorial experiences can help you to reframe your mindset, whether you want to uplift or wind down after a long day,” adds Zaman.

INCLUDING THE BEST BEAUTY TIP SHE’S LEARNED FROM HER TV CAREER, AND WHY IT’S ALL ABOUT FEELING COMFORTABLE IN YOUR SKIN. BY SAM WYLIE-HARRIS.
CAT DEELEY REVEALS HER SKINCARE AND BEAUTY SECRETS
66 JUNE 2024 FASHION & BEAUTY
When it comes to early starts – and spending the day under bright lights – Cat Deeley has learned a thing or two about looking and feeling her best during her 25-year TV career.
The mum-of-two (Deeley has two sons – Milo, eight, and James, five –with her husband, comedian Patrick Kielty) first found fame in the late Nineties, hosting MTV and SM:TV Live with Ant & Dec, before moving to LA and presenting entertainment show, So You Think You Can Dance?
Having moved back to London in 2020, she made her debut on ITV’s This Morning this week, alongside copresenter Ben Shephard.
A self-confessed beauty enthusiast, Deeley, who is also an ambassador for Ella & Jo’s, is all about keeping her skin well cared for and glowing.
HERE, SHE SHARES HER SKINCARE SECRETS AND FAVOURITE FINDS…
What are your handbag essentials?
“I always like to carry the Hyaluronic Skin Mist from Ella & Jo. It’s a brilliant product that freshens up your make-up during the day, and plumps and nourishes your skin at the same time – it really gives you a glow.”
Deeley says she also carries a bottle of unisex fragrance oil called E11even (£80 for 20ml, e11evenfragrance.com).
“It’s just great for taking a moment. It’s energising, its uplifting, its grounding… all those things in one. I normally have some form of moisturising lip balm in there too,” she adds of her handbag essentials.
What are the 3 beauty products you can’t live without?
“The Glow Up Enzyme Mask is my absolute favourite out of the entire range,” says Deeley. “It plumps up my skin, gets rid of any dry skin cells, and just makes any moisturiser that I use afterwards really sink in. It’s beautiful.”
“I love an eyelash curler, it’s one of my favourite things,” she adds. “It makes me look awake even when I’ve been up half the night with the boys. And some kind of mascara, probably.”
What’s the one beauty rule you swear by?
“Why cleanse once when you can cleanse twice? It’s essential for me, especially if I’ve been working, have been to an event, or if I’ve had a full face of make-up.”
Deeley says she also loves Melt The Day Away Cleansing Balm: “I put it all over my face and massage it in. You can use it on eye make-
up, foundation, everything.
“Take a warm washcloth and then just take everything off. I love to use the Brighten & Glow Hydrating Exfoliating Cleanser after that, just to remove every last trace of make-up,” she adds. “And then I go into my full skincare routine.”
When do you feel your most beautiful?
“I feel my most beautiful when I’m probably not at my most beautiful, but to me, I feel it,” says Deeley.
“It would be as the sun is starting to set on the beach after spending the day with my boys in the sunshine. I’ve got beachy hair, no make-up on, and my skin feels warm.
“You can smell the sunshine on your skin, and they kind of cuddle into you at the same time. That’s when I feel my best.”
What’s the best beauty tip you’ve learned throughout your TV career ?
“The best beauty tip is basically ‘less is more’. I think women look more beautiful with actually less makeup,” says Deeley.
“But that does mean you have to really take care of your skin. You have to eat a good diet, and you have to exercise and drink water.”
Deeley says she doesn’t have one specific beauty icon, but adds: “For me, it’s always when a woman feels comfortable in her own skin. I think then she is incredibly beautiful and incredibly charismatic. When you feel good, you look good too.”
Have you had any beauty disasters?
“There are so many! I mean, I’ve had a terrible perm, I had one eyebrow, I then had two very thin eyebrows, I had really short hair that looked like a giant mushroom. I had red hair, dark hair, blonde hair – here is nothing I haven’t done,” she laughs.
“But I think that’s one of the things when I was talking about women being very comfortable in their own skin. I think you have to kind of go through that to work out what doesn’t work for you, and work out what does work for you.”

There’s a reason why the fashion set can’t resist bringing out the timeless print during the warmer months. Adding an appropriate dose of colour and interest to any look, there are countless ways to wear florals to make them modern and trendy. Although florals are harder to style than more neutral prints such as stripes or polka dots, the beauty of a flowery print is that it can totally elevate your look in one simple yet timeless step. Step out of your comfort zone and embrace the modern floral trend with one of these simple yet stylish outfit formulas that will serve you well all through the season.
Co-ords
Co-ords will look chic no matter what print or style you’re wearing, but they work especially well with florals. Rather than a predictable maxi dress for the summer, a co-ord gives a similar feel but with much more edge. Embrace the Gucci-esque style with a statement floral suit, or shop for some floaty trousers and a matching oversized blouse to look and feel cool in the warmer weather. Finish off the look with some neutral or plain accessories, like some black boots and a minimalist handbag, to let the print do the talking and to avoid making your outfit appear too busy.

are common colours between both items to create a sense of harmony throughout your outfit.
Statement trousers
If you’re new to the florals trend, one of the least intimidating ways to start off is with one statement item, like trousers. Pairing bright floral trousers with a more minimalist top makes the trend wearable for everyday without being at all boring. If you usually wear jeans day-to-day, look for a blue floral pattern in a similar hue to your favourite denim to ease yourself in. This way, you can also be sure that your statement trousers of choice will fit in with the rest of your capsule wardrobe. Stick to the silhouette of trousers that makes you feel most comfortable and shop for a statement floral style in the same shape. This will help you to look and feel your best when embracing the floral trend.
One of the best ways to make florals look more modern and trendy is by clashing them. This is not a trend for the fainthearted, but when done right, it looks impossibly cool. Simply opt for two different floral prints in your top and bottoms and pair them together for a head-turning ensemble. To make the look feel intentional rather than just thrown together, ensure there
Swimwear
If you’re still reluctant to add florals into your everyday wardrobe, consider how floral swimwear can liven up your holiday outfit rotation. Less intimidating than investing in a full floral get-up, a floral swimming costume allows you to try out the trend in a subtler manner. Not only will it make a nice change from plain blockcoloured swimwear, but floral prints will look even better in the summer sun. There are countless floral bikinis and swimming costumes available on the high street, so this is a way to experiment with the trend without breaking the bank.

SALONE DEL MOBILE FURNITURE
FAIR & MILAN DESIGN WEEK 2024
Installations, interiors, exhibitions, energy, furniture, frolics. Yes, it’s the Salone del Mobile furniture fair and Milan Design Week 2024.
With the Milanese streets abuzz with excitement, it’s where luxury interior design and theatricality collide. From immersive installations – exhibits to climb through, light shows set to music, rooms focused on smell and mood, usually-off-limit buildings to explore – furniture found new and creative ways to wow us.
DEEP REDS:
Dive into the full-bodied richness that dominated this year’s Milan showrooms; fruity burgundy/cherry/oxblood shades that feel intense and energising as well as muted and elegant at the same time. The colours came in all guises, from gleaming lacquer to please-tell-mewhere-your- quarry-is heavily veined marble; carried best on forms that were simplistic in order to let the rich pigment lead the way and set the tone in stone.
LACQUERS:
‘Shinier, glossier, more polished!’ yelled the walkways of Salone del Mobile, and the designers delivered, with hard furniture from dining tables to storage covered in layers of practically mirror-like brilliance at every turn. How does lacquer impact a space? It turns any object into a sculpture, a working reflection-distorting piece of art that draws all eyes in.
Long associated with extravagance and elegance, lacquered furniture has a history of making an impact indoors. This year, lacquered furniture is all about contrast: classic tones such as iconic deep red and dark bottle green are being combined with experimental, contemporary forms, the designs standing monolithlike within a room, awaiting discussion and admiration alike.
PADDED & PILLOWY:
Get ready to sink into unadulterated comfort – contemporary furniture is getting super- stuffed. This year’s design cohort of chairs, sofas, footstools, tables and more are voluptuous, curvy designs that aren’t skimping on materials. From cushions on seating that seem over-filled, plush, and puffy to generously shaped hard furniture, this

design movement tells the story of cosiness and relaxation where more is oh-so more.
Each piece is outrageously tempting – you can practically feel it enveloping you before you’ve even begun to take a seat. They’re soothing. Welcoming. Each piece is a sanctuary – nothing and no one can get you (possibly even find you) when you’re nestled safely in these soft, cocooning embraces.
PRODUCT FOCUS: DS888, DE-SEDE
Enter, next-level seating flexibility. Following visually in the footsteps of its much celebrated predecessor: the 1972-designed DS-600, the DS-888 is similarly snake-like and curvaceous thanks to a set of thin segments. What’s new is the
backrest – able to move in multiple directions, the recurrent upholstered ridges can each be customised in height and angle to create individual head and neck support, as well as innovatively sliding along the modular base to be positioned as needed.
“With the DS-888 Collina, we wanted to redefine the limits of what is possible with a modular design and achieve a seating landscape that stands out with its versatility, ergonomics and sophisticated aesthetics.” Monika Walser, CEO of de Sede.
Created for use inside and out, the interior sofa is upholstered in premium leather on a high gloss chrome, or satin black, base frame, while the weatherproof outdoor models are wrapped in durable fabric developed by Kvadrat and The Romo Group on stainless steel frames in finishes such as black silk matt or white silk gloss. chaplins.co.uk

SPIRAL CELLARS
APassion. Excellence. Wonder.
s any wine collector will tell you, much of the appeal of wine lies in its mystique, the hope that with time and careful cellaring, a rather average wine can evolve into something much more complex, characterful and interesting. Creating the optimum environmental and climatic conditions in which wine is allowed to develop over time, is something of an art form. To then take all this cellaring know-how and present as something breathtakingly beautiful, is nothing short of magic.
Spiral Cellars, the UK’s leading purveyor of luxury wine storage has been doing just that for over 40 years, so it’s little wonder that UK based Spiral Cellars are considered one of the world’s leading purveyors of luxury wine rooms. Offering an
extensive range of cellaring solutions to suit all tastes, spaces and budgets, the company has become the go-to number to call for wine lovers, celebrities, property developers and interior designers looking to add statement wine storage to their properties.
Spiral Cellar
In the world of wine cellaring, the iconic underground Spiral Cellar is a true design classic, having injected some serious ‘wow factor’ into thousands of properties both in the UK and further afield. It’s a spectacular and space-saving way to professionally store up to 1600 bottles of wine at home, yet famously does so without the need for a mechanised cooling system.

READY TO CELLAR SPIRAL CELLAR
The UnSpiral Cellar
Launched last year and consisting of 38 modular and interchangeable components, the UnSpiral Cellar is the easy and affordable way to create flexible and affordable wine storage to suit any room or space. Offering the same limestone concrete aesthetic of the underground cellar AND all the tailored individualism of a wine room, it’s no wonder the new UnSpiral Cellar has been such an instant hit with wine loving customers.
Wine Rooms, Walls and Cabinets
Gone are the days when the only wine room option was an eyewateringly expensive bespoke commission. Over the last few years, Spiral Cellars has been quietly leading a cellaring revolution, having introduced a range of wine room products and services to suit all projects and budgets. Alongside their high-end, tailored end-toend managed service they now also offer a design only service, considered by those in the know to be a savvy way to acquire a bespoke looking wine room but without the bespoke price tag.
Ready to Cellar Collection
Ideal for wine lovers who yearn for a Spiral Cellars designed wine room
but who perhaps don’t have the space or budget to dedicate to such a top-end luxury, the Ready to Cellar Collection, is an exclusive range of some of the same exquisitely designed bottle display and storage components the company use in their custom-designed wine rooms, now available to purchase by private clients and trade professionals for self-assembly within their own independent cellaring projects.
The appeal of the Collection lies is it’s utter flexibility, it’s suitability for projects involving either twelve or twelve hundred bottles of wine. Customers can select from the wide range of kit style pieces to create their own wine space, exactly as they want it, regardless of size or shape. And with all pieces available in a variety of finishes and sizes, there is plenty or scope to create truly personalised wine storage.
Whether you dream of a spectacular cellar, a walk-in wine room, a state-of-the-art wine wall, or simply some expert advice on climate control, you can be sure that Spiral Cellars will create a solution that fits your needs, taste and of course, your lifestyle.
The price of a Spiral Cellar varies according to depth, door and method of installation but start from £22,500. Custom Design commissions start from £7,500 and a typical UnSpiral Cellar project costs between £1,000 - £2,000 per square metre of wall. spiralcellars.com; 020 3815 3329; info@spiralcellars.com

Embrace Summer with a Garden Shading Solution from BROADVIEW
Summer is fast approaching, bringing with it the hopeful allure of long, sun-drenched days perfect for enjoying the great outdoors. However, we all know too well the unpredictability that a British Summer can bring - sunburn, overheating, harsh glare, as well as downpours, wind and sometimes four seasons in one day! But that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy your outdoor space - the good news is there’s a straightforward solution to these issues that allows you to enjoy your garden without compromising on comfort: a retractable garden awning or louvred roof pergola from Poole-based shading specialists, Broadview. Both awnings and pergolas, attached to the exterior of your home, offer an elegant way to provide shade and shelter. These discreet shades can be extended to protect you from the sun’s harsh rays and sudden rain showers, enabling you to maximise your outdoor enjoyment. exterior. And a high quality pergola system, made in Europe by the leading pergola manufacturer, provides a sophisticated touch that will enhance your garden’s aesthetic and create the wow factor.
4. Enjoy Your Garden All Night, and Year, Long
With UK summers becoming increasingly hot, often reaching the high 20s and 30s, finding relief from the heat is more important than ever. Most UK homes are not equipped with air conditioning and are designed to retain heat, offering little respite indoors. A garden awning or pergola provides a cool, shaded retreat where you can enjoy fresh air and the pleasures of summer without the risk of sunburn or the discomfort of a stifling home. Whether you’re dining al fresco, entertaining friends, or simply relaxing with a book, a shaded oasis in your garden ensures comfort and enjoyment.
2. Expand Your Living Space
Adding a pergola is like creating a new room on your patio—no planning permission required. It offers the sun and rain protection you need to comfortably spend more time outdoors. This new space can be anything you want it to be - an outdoor living room, dining area, or even a home office. And with optional side screens, as well as integrated heating and lighting, your new ‘room’ can be used all year round, whatever the weather.
3. Add Style to Your Garden
Modern awnings feature sleek designs with numerous fabric and colour options, allowing you to choose the perfect combination to complement your home’s
Today’s shading solutions do more than just provide shade; they can transform your garden into a usable space around the clock. With integrated LED lighting and heaters, you can enjoy your outdoor space even after the sun sets. LED lights create a warm, ambient glow, while built-in heaters ensure your patio remains cozy on cooler evenings. This versatility means you get more use out of your garden, regardless of the weather or time of day.
Transform Your Garden into a Summer Oasis with Broadview
A garden awning or pergola is an ideal way to make the most of your garden this summer. It offers shade, expands your living space, and provides protection from the elements, transforming your outdoor area into a cool, comfortable, and stylish retreat.

Our products are built to last, featuring durable, UV-resistant fabrics that withstand fading and damage year after year. SUSTAINABLE CRAFTSMANSHIP
Cult is thrilled to announce its new collaboration with A TOKO, a boutique brand founded by Alex Whitton in 2023. The partnership showcases a sustainable initiative in supporting a small Eco-friendly business and supporting their reach in the furniture industry.
A TOKO is inspired by Alex’s love for Indonesia, a lot of his influences and inspiration came from his partner Sara, who grew up in Jakarta and later in Bali. A TOKO prides itself on utilising sustainably sourced materials and ensuring fair payment to all artisans involved in their production process. With Sara’s upbringing in Jakarta and Bali, the brand embraces Indonesia’s rich heritage while infusing it with a modern, mid century aesthetic.
The partnership between Cult Furniture and A TOKO marks our journey towards promoting sustainable craftsmanship in the furniture industry. By highlighting the traditional skills and practices of Indonesian artisans, both companies aim to celebrate the history and relationship between the materials and the craft.

RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW INSPIRED TRENDS
HOME & GARDEN
98 JUNE 2024
From the blend of historical literary inspiration
with contemporary design excellence to the use of native plants, there has been an emphasis on sustainability and allowing nature to be itself at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
These are some of the key gardening trends to emerge from this year’s event.
Sustainability
According to the chair of The Society of Garden Designers (SGD) Andrew Duff, the main trend at this year’s RHS Chelsea is sustainability.
“It’s become the norm, and I don’t see it as a passing trend. There is a lot of native planting of plants from the UK, which makes it more adaptive. These are like birch trees, native grasses and a big move away from lawns,” said Duff.
“People are more conscious of climate change. We will get a lot more rain as well as increased temperatures, which broadens the level of planting that’s being celebrated.”
The way people are using their gardens has changed, mainly due to the pandemic, Duff said.
“They are enjoying planting again and want to be outside, nurture a living thing in their garden and see how they can plant their own food and conserve rainwater.
“We can’t continue to water our gardens in the way we are doing. So plants need to be tougher and that’s why British natives are so important. It can also show that it’s okay for the garden to do its thing, which is a refreshing change – the garden is not seen as a big burden as it once was.
“Gardens should be fun and shouldn’t be precious. Families with young children should be able to kick a ball and see bees on plants. Gardens also have other functions, like drying clothes.”
Water
Landscape designer Tom Massey and architect Je Ahn, who designed The WaterAid Garden, which featured flood and drought-resilient plants to adapt to a changing climate, agreed with Duff.
“There are so many gardens here dealing with sustainable water management, including The WaterAid Garden, which is really all about rainwater harvesting.
“In this country, we had a lot of flooding this winter and in previous summers we have had 40 degrees Celsius heat and drought. So even here, in the UK, this is something we should all be thinking about. It’s really important,” said Massey.
Gentle gardening
‘Gentle gardening’ is a term Massey used to describe another trend to better support biodiversity.
“Planting that is designed for pollinators and insects. So I think a looser and more gentle approach to gardening, one that is more in tune with nature and moves away from the very clipped, formal and sterile landscapes that maybe we would have seen 10 years ago,” he said.
“There are so many gardens here dealing with sustainable water management, including The WaterAid Garden, which is really all about rainwater harvesting”
“This requires less chemical use, being more patient, not demanding perfection immediately, just being a bit more relaxed in the way we approach our gardening.
It’s also about having the right plant and knowing the right location to plant them, Ahn added.
JUNE 2024 99
“That’s a really important message. After Covid, more people started to buy house plants and are learning more about how to properly take care of them.
“But people just need to do a little more reading, make use of social media, the enormous amount of resources the RHS have or even work with a professional.”
Growing your own food
Garden designers and passionate growers Lucy Hutchings and Kate Cotterill, who founded their heirloom seed company She Grows Veg in June 2023, have tried their best to get rid of the gardening jargon, avoid using the Latin names and anything else that can put people off from growing their own food.
“Growing your own food can be straightforward,” said Hutchings. “You don’t need a big garden, and can literally sprinkle some lettuce seeds in a pot and leave it by the windowsill.
And if it doesn’t work or dies, it really doesn’t matter, just have another go. It’s about taking out the fear of failure.
“If you grow it yourself, you know exactly what happens to it, it’s from nothing but love and you can taste the difference”
“People have become a lot more conscious of where their food comes from, especially young people. They care and want to know that it hasn’t had too much impact on the planet as well.
“For these reasons, they’ve also realised that they don’t have much control when you buy food from a shop. But if you grow it yourself, you know exactly what happens to it, it’s from nothing but love and you can taste the difference. You know it’s massively nutrient-packed.
“With anything grown, as soon as it’s picked, the nutritional levels
start to decrease, so if you pick a fruit or vegetable from your garden or windowsill – wherever you grow it – you can eat it almost straight away and it’s so much better for you.
“People love anything that’s brightly coloured, which has the highest level of nutrients in it. This allows you to eat other things you wouldn’t usually see in the supermarket aisle. Swiss chard is a great example of this, it’s a bit like spinach with a big fat stem, lasts for pretty much a year and it doesn’t die in the winter – a brilliant one for beginner gardeners.”
Colourful plants
A variety of summer plants were used throughout RHS Chelsea, which could mean an increase in colourful plants in gardens untill September, including the tall yet familiar Foxglove – also known as Digitalis – and perennials, which featured in many different designs.
“The subtle use of planting colours is a nod to people’s desire to feel more immersed in nature and be part of their countryside. I think there is a link to interiors too, which are becoming bolder and brighter, and often gardens would go the opposite way,” said Duff.
Trees
The power of trees can sometimes be overlooked, especially how they adapt to climate change.
Bonsai, the Japanese art of growing and shaping miniature trees in containers, was also featured at the show.
“We’ve seen a huge increase in people getting into bonsai. If you are suffering from depression or any other mental health issues, this helps you become extroverted instead of introverted,” said amateur grower Nick Payne from The Bonsai Boys.
“When I’m working with my trees, I completely forget about everything. A lot of these trees are pretty old and you can carry them around. They are fed, pruned and looked after very well.”

GET THE REGENCY GARDEN LOOK
Netflix’s regency drama Bridgerton is set to captivate audiences with its enchanting tales once more as it returns for season three this May. Dobbies Garden Centres has everything you need to feel as regal as Penelope Featherington, aka Lady Whistledown, who is set to take centre stage this season.
We caught up with Dobbies plant buyer, Nigel Lawton, and Seasonal Buyer, Anna Service, to find out how you can get the regencycore aesthetic and create a garden that represents new beginnings, the theme of the season. Strap in for this horse and cart ride as we take you through their tips.
Plants
Drawing inspiration from the opulence and elegance of Bridgerton, Nigel recommends lush floral arrangements to transport you into a world of romance and refinement, reminiscent of the beloved Netflix series. AL FRESCO ESCAPES: Creating the Ultimate Outdoor Retreat with Awnings
As the warm embrace of summer draws near, the allure of the great outdoors beckons us to bask in its glory. What better way to savour the sunshine and create the perfect haven for family and friends than with the addition of awnings to your outdoor space? Awnings, often overlooked but profoundly transformative, possess the remarkable ability to elevate your garden into a sanctuary of leisure and delight.
Picture a vibrant garden bathed in golden sunlight, laughter dancing through the air, the sizzle of a barbecue teasing your senses. With the gentle shelter of an awning, this idyllic scene becomes not just a dream, but your reality. Shielded from the harsh rays of the sun, yet still enveloped in its warmth, your outdoor space becomes
an oasis of comfort and joy.
Beyond mere protection from the elements, awnings lend themselves to the art of alfresco living. Imagine lazy afternoons spent lounging beneath the cool shade, indulging in leisurely conversations and savoury delights. With the versatile canopy provided by an awning, your garden transcends its limitations, becoming an extension of your home. A place where memories are made and cherished.
But the benefits of awnings extend far beyond the realm of social gatherings. They offer a sanctuary for solitude, a refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Whether you seek solace in the pages of a good book or simply yearn for a moment of quiet contemplation, your awning provides a sanctuary where you can reconnect with nature and with yourself.
So, as summer beckons and the call of the outdoors grows ever stronger, consider the transformative power of awnings. From vibrant patterns to sleek, modern designs, the possibilities are as endless as your imagination.

AT HOME WITH FRANCONE BESPOKE TAPS
Traditional fixtures, elevated
In a world where mass production often overshadows individuality, Francone Bespoke Taps has emerged as a beacon of fully customisable luxury brass bathroom and kitchen fixtures. Founded on the principles of exceptional craftsmanship, high-quality materials and personal customer service, the Anglo-Italian company offers an unparalleled blend of tradition, innovation and style.
Although the company is based in Berkshire, its traditionally produced fixtures are crafted by artisans in Piemonte, an area of northern Italy renowned for brass craftsmanship. The founder, Paolo Francone, hails from this region and later moved to London, where he discovered his love of classic and contemporary British design.
The brand prides itself on its bespoke approach, allowing clients to customise every aspect of their taps, showers and accessories, from the finish and choice of handles to intricate design details. Francone firmly believes that made-to-order, artisancrafted hardware should be achievable. “You really can enjoy completely bespoke, beautifully finished products without them costing the earth,” they say. “Simply tell
us what you want, and we will take care of the rest.”
By blending Italian craftsmanship with British aesthetics, the Francone Bepoke Taps approach involves customizing designs based on customers’ preferences and design needs, then collaborating with artisans to turn them into unique products. This approach is favoured by commercial and residential clients alike and the company works with a long and growing list of international interior design and architect partners looking to incorporate unique designs into their projects.
The company is particularly renowned for its unlacquered brass finish, which naturally develops a beautiful patina over time. You’ll find Francone Bespoke Taps in high-end residences across the globe, as well as in the bathrooms and changing rooms of prestigious hotels, spas and corporate clients. Seeking to create something extraordinary? Reserve your Free Virtual Consultation with one of their in-house experts to embark on a journey towards exceptional design.
