Whether it’s the swinging Sixties or the minimalism of the Nineties, every decade has a distinctive style, each championed by certain celebrities. Style icons help encapsulate everything that is fashionable from their time, while not necessarily being the celebrities who had the most out-there or unique style. Instead, they’re individuals who captured the feel and fashion of a specific era, set trends everyone wanted to follow, and are still today associated with the style of a particular decade. At 85 years old, Judi Dench has become British Vogue’s oldest cover star. The actor - known for her roles in the James Bond franchise, Shakespeare in Love and more - is on the front cover of the fashion magazine’s June issue. In the accompanying profile, her daughter Finty Williams says: “After the photoshoot, she came back literally thinking she was Beyonce.” You can trace its roots back to a bespoke shoemaker, Jimmy Choo, based in the East End of London in the early 1990s. The fashion designer was born Jimmy Choo Yeang Keat in Penang, Malaysia in 1961, and using the craftsmanship he learned from his father, also a cobbler, Choo made his first pair of shoes at the age of just 11. His father wanted him to follow in his footsteps. During times of difficulty, arts and culture can help us make sense of a confused reality, offering refreshing perspectives and sharing lessons from the past. There’s something reassuringly therapeutic about exploring a gallery, even if you’re clueless about the works on display; for a few hours, it’s possible to get lost in another world. While physical visits are temporarily off-limits, there’s still a chance to peruse permanent collections and temporary exhibitions from the safety of your home. From top institutions to emerging collectives, curatorial teams have flexed their creative muscles to allow access online.

immediate success. Jimmy Choo was among the first to bring shoes and handbags to Hollywood where the red carpet proved to be the ideal runway for the brand. Soon, Choo became the darling of the celebrity world, in particular Princess Diana, who donned Choo’s footwear seemingly everywhere she went. Highprofile devotees also include the Duchess of Cambridge, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and Kendal Jenner. The fictional Carrie Bradshaw in television series “Sex and the City.” famously sported Jimmy Choo shoes, boosting the brand’s status. Within two years of opening his shop, Choo’s shoes were featured in an eightpage spread in Vogue magazine. And it was his relationship with Vogue that would prove to be instrumental in the rise of the Jimmy Choo brand. Despite the rise of his popularity, Choo was still a small operation, making just 20 hand-made pairs shoes a week. But Tamara Mellon, an accessories editor at Vogue, who often hired Choo to make shoes for fashion shoots, sensed a larger market for Choo’s creations. She approached the shoemaker about partnering to create a line of ready-to-wear footwear - with a goal of creating a global luxury business. In 1996, both Choo and Mellon quickly grew the business, keeping the focus on creating high-end footwear, but no longer relying on the idea that every single pair had to be made by Choo himself. They contracted with Italian factories and opened their first boutique shop in Motcomb Street, London. Two years later, the company expanded to the US, securing locations in the premiere luxury shopping destinations of the world’s most prestigious cities including Madison Avenue in New York City and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, also creating a line-up of adoring Hollywood celebrities including Julia Roberts and Renee Zellweger. International expansion continued with Jimmy Choo stores opening in Avenue Montaigne in Paris, Via Condotti in Rome, Ginza in Tokyo, and prestigious shopping districts Sloane Street and Bond Street here in London. And by the turn of the century, the Choo name was a global brand, with high-end retail clients that included Harrods and Saks Fifth Avenue carrying Choo footwear. The Choo brand had also expanded to handbags and other accessories.

“It’s a beautiful, distinctive art, and shoes are like the foundations. If the foundations aren’t right, the building won’t stand upright, and if a woman’s balance isn’t right, nothing else is.” - Jimmy Choo

His father wanted him to follow in his footsteps. Mr Choo recalls “When I first started, my father wouldn’t let me make a shoe. Instead, he said: “Sit and watch, sit and watch.” For months and months, I did that.” After learning from his father about the craft of shoemaking, Choo made his way to England in the early 1980s to study at the Cordwainers Technical College in Hackney, where he graduated with honours in 1983. Choosing to remain in England, Choo opened his first shop in Hackney in 1986 in an old hospital building. It didn’t take long for Choo’s reputation to build. The sexy cut, fashionable design, and exceptional Italian craftsmanship struck a chord with a sophisticated clientele, and the first collection enjoyed

But in the background, all was not well. Choo and Mellon were at odds about the direction of the company. In what would become one of the more fascinating rifts in the fashion industry, Choo didn’t think bigger was better. He questioned the quality of the shoes the company was making, and seemed to long for the days when he was back at his shop in Hackney making a small number of pieces of footwear for specific clients. In 2001, Choo sold his half of the company to Robert Bensoussan of Equinox Luxury Holdings for $30 million. Jimmy Choo was then put up for sale in April after struggling to retain the status it held in the early 2000’s. Both Choo and Mellon departed in 2011

when JAB Luxury bought the firm for more than £500m. Today, Jimmy Choo encompasses a complete luxury accessories brand. Women’s shoes remain the core of the product offer, alongside handbags, small leather goods, scarves, sunglasses, eyewear, belts, fragrance and men’s shoes. Jimmy Choo has a global store network encompassing more than 150 stores and is present in the most prestigious department stores worldwide. This is what makes Jimmy Choo an interesting pairing with Michael Kors, as the former is known for its sky-high stilettos and glam, crystal-embellished designs, while the latter gravitates towards down-to-earth leather goods and ready-towear. Jimmy himself now concentrates on a very personal business, where he designs directly for clients in high-end couture. The Metropolitan Museum Of Art, New York, USA Best for... mixing art with architecture

So many of the world’s greatest museums are housed within buildings as beautiful as the art they display. Celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, New York’s premier arts institution, The Met, has published a series of 360- degree videos offering visitors unique views and access to areas they might otherwise miss (even if lockdown wasn’t in place). Explore the neoclassical grandeur of The Great Hall, admire fragments of the Nubian Temple of Dendur set around a shimmering pool in The Sackler Wing, and discover The Met Cloisters, an enchanting branch of the museum located in northern Manhattan, overlooking the Hudson River, with a focus on medieval European art. NOTTING HILL FISH SHOP ‘THE SUPERMARKET OF DREAMS’

16 JUNE 2020

A

London fishmonger that transformed into a ‘chef’s supermarket’ to serve its community will quickly open a second site, The Supermarket of Dreams, in June. Working along a collaborative ethos, at the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis, Notting Hill Fish Shop teamed up with a local butcher, grocer and baker to ensure the very best produce could still be purchased or delivered seven days a week as well as delivering 500 kilos of fish to frontline NHS workers. The Supermarket of Dreams will offer restaurant standard, inventive dishes created by chefs from London’s finest restaurants alongside the highest quality ingredients, available to conveniently take away. Located on Holland Park Avenue, The Supermarket of Dreams will offer a playful, high end riff on a Kwik-E-Mart, injecting fresh energy and attracting a new demographic to the neighbourhood. Forward thinking founder and long-standing W11 resident, Chris D’Sylva was keen to create an entirely new concept, rather than the expected replication of his much loved Notting Hill Fish Shop. Chris has brought together several of the country’s most iconic independent food and drink companies, with Ottolenghi, Skye Gyngell, H.G. Walter, Natoora, Allpress Coffee and Neal’s Yard Dairy just a few of the brands with sections in the new shop. Delivering all over London, and also hot coffee, pastries within a five minute radius, The Supermarket of Dreams will serve up some of London’s most progressive, mouthwatering ready meals hand prepared on the premises by a young and dynamic team of chefs from Michelin starred restaurants. Takeaway meals will rotate on

a daily basis according to seasonality with signatures including; signature Bluefin Tuna, Yellowtail and Salmon sold in ‘ready to slice’ blocks to make sashimi at home, handmade sushi rolls, dressed lobster and crab, oysters and caviar. With something for everyone, the shop will also house a raw juice bar, products from Skye Gyngell’s SPRING, Happy Endings cult ice cream sandwiches, a hit with both children and adults alike, and fresh flowers delivered regularly by The Tuk Tuk Flower Studio, who bring their beautiful blooms to London from the Cotswolds to be sold at cost price so that the flowers don’t go to waste, offering an explosion of colour, joy and nature in peoples’ homes at a time when we could all use some cheering up. With true foresight, Notting Hill Fish Shop started to evolve to face the unprecedented crisis that was headed to the UK in early March. Everyday people form an orderly socially distanced queue to buy outstanding fish such as new season wild sea bass, wild native lobster, live langoustines, turbot, Scottish salmon and fresh sushi. The Notting Hill Fish shop will remain open serving up the finest raw ingredients, perfectly complementing the new Holland Park store. Chris says of the new opening: “The origins of The Supermarket of Dreams came from our desire for absolute creative freedom.

We are looking forward to experimenting and having fun with our incredible produce. We can’t wait for Londoners to check it out both in person and online soon.” The Supermarket of Dreams, 126 Holland Park, London, W1 4UE. www.supermarketofdreams.com Social: @SuperMarketofDreams

Monaco Yacht Show A Superyacht Industry Support Show. September 23 – 26, 2020, Port Hercule, Monaco

22 JUNE 2020

T

he Principality of Monaco and Informa have announced a secure, not-for-profit event in 2020 They have confirmed they are working together to deliver an intimate, not-for-profit Monaco Yacht Show in Port Hercule in September 2020, with full details to be announced in the coming weeks. The proposed event will employ the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness and be dedicated to supporting the speedy recovery of the industry post COVID-19, providing an invaluable platform for designers, brokers, shipyards and other key players within the yachting industry to connect with their customers and share ideas in a safe environment.

Return & Recovery post the COVID-19 Pandemic

Like most industries, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a marked impact on the international yachting community, with many businesses temporarily closed and staff furloughed, and the usual annual cycle of industry activity severely disrupted. As countries and locations around the world gradually relax lockdown restrictions and ease control measures, it is imperative that the superyacht community is supported in every way possible to help the industry return and recover safely and quickly.

The 30th Monaco Yacht Show in September 2020

“The Monaco Yacht Show has been working closely with the Principality of Monaco to determine how best to support the industry in 2020”

With this in mind, The Monaco Yacht Show has been working closely with the Principality of Monaco to determine how best to support the industry in 2020. This year’s Monaco Yacht Show is scheduled from 23 to 26 September. With control measures steadily being relaxed in Monaco, around Europe and internationally, on current course and speed, this should allow for a carefully staged event to still take place this year. Therefore, it is our intention to retain these dates for the 2020 Monaco Yacht Show and work with suppliers and local authorities over the coming weeks to confirm full details of the event. In the spirit of the history and position of the event within the superyacht industry, the 30th Monaco Yacht Show will be run on a not-for-profit basis, recognizing the challenges facing everyone post the COVID-19 pandemic and, therefore, providing direct support to all attendees and exhibitors from across the market. Whilst the intimate nature of the 2020 event will prioritize the safety of participants, both Informa and the Monaco Principality are committed to ensuring the quality of the event and show experience is maintained for everyone. Charlie McCurdy, Chief Executive, Informa Markets (organiser of the Monaco Yacht Show) said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on all industries, not least the international yachting community. As we move to the other side of the pandemic, all parts of the industry need to work collaboratively to ensure a speedy return and recovery. We are playing our part by hosting a not-for-profit Monaco Yacht Show in 2020, providing an opportunity for the community to come together, share ideas, meet with customers and start to rebuild positive momentum.” www.monacoyachtshow.com JUNE 2020 23

social distancing in place and the restrictions being progressively lifted, what better way than to hold your personal picnic- Ascot Style- in your own garden. Here are some tips for making it a memorable event, either by sourcing your outfit from your own wardrobe or by shopping online.”

Top 5 most commonly asked questions:

Should I buy my outfit or my hat first? No fixed rule. Normally, clients come to us with their outfit and we then design the perfect hat, dyed and trimmed to match. That said, if you find a fabulous hat that you have fallen in love with, go for it. You can always pair it with a simple dress and make your hat really stand out. What is the colour trend for this season? We were looking at beautiful soft pastel tones and neutrals. A really romantic palette. My prediction for SS21 is brights- Lots of colour and joy!

R

achel Trevor-Morgan shares some of her secrets and top tips on how to wear your Royal Ascot hat successfully and to full effect, even in your garden! Normally at this time of year, the summer season is in full swing with excitement mounting and everyone racing around, trying to find the perfect hat and matching outfit for Royal Ascot. Usually, at Rachel Trevor-Morgan Millinery, the studio would be buzzing with last minute orders, clients coming in for their final fittings and Rachel’s team would be working late into the night, putting the final touch on each creation that is unique and befitting the occasion. However, due to Covid19, the studio remains deserted, with no one to try on the beautiful millinery pieces. Around the world, a more or less cancelled social calendar has left milliners somewhat stranded, but not without optimism and ideas on how those stunning collections might still be able to see the light of day before the summer is over. “Millinery is a very seasonal business with most of our orders coming in the spring season,” says Rachel, who has been running her own company for 30 years. “This is the first time I have ever known such a quiet month of June. Usually there are weddings, garden parties and of course the great race meetings. The cancellation of all events has been a huge shock to all of us, but I’m hoping that when lockdown is over, everyone will want to dress up and what better way to celebrate life and the future than with a hat to match the occasion!’ And she adds: “This year Royal Ascot will be held behind closed doors and we have learnt that a host of people will be holding their own special ‘Royal Ascot parties’ behind their garden walls. With

How do I know what shape hat to wear? It’s all about balance, silhouette and making sure your hat is the perfect finish for your outfit. “Hats always look beautiful with hair tied back, accentuating the silhouette” hats these days, that’s why trying many different styles is a must. A visit to a professional milliner is ideal What is the appropriate size of a hat for Royal Ascot? If you are attending Royal Ascot and have a Royal Enclosure pass, a hat with a minimum diameter of 10cm is the rule. This is to make sure that race goers commit to a proper design to cover their heads and not just a minimal hair accessory. Be bold, everyone is wearing hats so you don’t need to feel anxious

Should I wear my hair back with a hat? It really depends on the style of hat. More often than not, my answer would be yes. Hats always look beautiful with hair tied back, accentuating the silhouette. That said, hair down works for a slightly more low-key vibe. My greatest tip this year would be, with Ascot in your own garden, really have some fun, take some risks! You will be with friends and won’t have to worry about all the normal considerations…moving around and bumping into people, worrying about whether you have got everything absolutely perfect. Just enjoy the experience in a more relaxed way. Let’s just hope the sun shines! aston mARTIN Vantage: ears For uperiority S ar C Sports

A

ston Martin this year celebrates the creation of one of its most famous model designations, as the Vantage family of sports cars marks its 70th anniversary. The name Vantage proudly sits on more than a third of all the sports cars ever made by the luxury British brand. Spanning seven decades and covering some of the company’s most revered sports cars, the Vantage family forms a crucial part of the ever-evolving Aston Martin story. From the earliest days of the DB2 Vantage to today’s state-of-theart Vantage sports car, this historic name has become synonymous with pace, power and more than a dash of style.

70 years of Vantage

The word Vantage first appeared in 1950, with the debut of the Aston Martin DB2 with Vantage specification. At the 1951 Earl’s Court Motor Exhibition, an Aston Martin press release said: “On the 1951 Earl’s Court stand will be displayed two Aston Martin DB.II saloons, one fitted with the regular engine and one fitted with the ‘Vantage’ engine, the high speed regularity of which was demonstrated so forcibly at Le Mans this year and last.” The DB4 Vantage made its debut with the start of the DB4 Series IV cars in 1961. Key to this was the ‘Special Series’ engine, featuring three SU HD8 carburettors and revised cylinder heads with bigger valves and a higher compression ratio. Power was quoted at the time as 266bhp. The more spacious DB4 Series V Vantage in 1962 featured as one of the cars used in the filming of the James Bond film Goldfinger. The car of course is now synonymous with the world’s most famous secret agent and was used in some of the filming as the basis for the film’s ‘gadget’ car. The DB5 Convertible with the Vantage engine is a combination that is rarer still with only eight sports cars out of 123 built, featuring this engine. Genuine originals of the DB5 Vantage and DB5 Vantage Convertible are considered very desirable indeed. The DB6 Vantage in Mk I and Mk II versions, followed the same tried and trusted upgrade formula. The number of original Vantage-engined cars can be counted in the dozens, rather than the hundreds, remaining hugely desirable and jealously guarded by lucky owners around the world. The next Aston Martin Vantage was hailed at its 1977 introduction as “Britain’s first supercar”. It could outrun a Ferrari Daytona in the 0-60 mph sprint, and if pushed to the limit it could record a top speed of 170 mph. The V8 Vantage evolved significantly over the course of its reign spanning three decades. Throughout its build period the Vantage remained the jewel in Aston Martin’s burnished crown. The 1990s saw the Virage-based Vantage – often referred to as the

70 Y

supercharged Vantage. It sports six headlights and boasts massive 362mm diameter ventilated discs and four piston AP Racing callipers at the front:. With 550bhp and 550lb-ft of torque, this was, at the time, the most powerful production power plant in the world. In 1999, the DB7 V12 Vantage made its debut boasting a 5.9-litre, 48 valve, all-alloy, V12 engine delivering 420bhp. From 2000, an acclaimed ‘Touchtronic’ system became available with the last DB7 V12 Vantage built rolling off the Bloxham line in 2003. That same year, the world got its first glimpse of the AMV8 Vantage Concept. In 2005, the production version of the V8 Vantage was unveiled and on the strength of the concept alone, order books were already bulging. Series production began at a rate approaching 3,000 sports car per year. To date, this iteration of Vantage remains the single biggest sales success in the brand’s proud 107-year history. In 2009, Aston Martin unveiled one of the most iconic and desirable cars yet to join the Vantage club: the V12 Vantage. On the road and mated to a six-speed manual gearbox this means a 0-60 mph time of 4.2 seconds, and an autobahn blistering top speed of 190 mph. Aston Martin engineers challenged themselves with the V12 Vantage S. Power is hiked to 565bhp and the 0-60 mph time is a ferocious 3.5 seconds. At a top speed of 205 mph, it became the fastest production car Aston Martin had yet offered to the public. A variety of special editions peppered the V12 Vantage production run, although arguably the most significant was the V12 Vantage Zagato. As befits an Aston Martin Zagato these cars are hyper rare. Today’s cutting-edge Vantage two-seater sports car is styled for aerodynamic excellence as well as obvious kerb appeal. The car features a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine with a peak power output of 503bhp and a torque peak of 505lb-ft, mated to a rear-mounted 8-speed automatic gearbox. This endows the current Vantage with a distinctly brisk 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds, with a top speed of 195 mph. The car was created to deliver a truly exhilarating driving experience. Remarking on the enduring appeal of Vantage as part of the brand’s rich and fascinating heritage, Aston Martin Lagonda President and Group CEO, Dr Andy Palmer said: “Today’s Vantage and Vantage AMR sports cars represent the latest interpretation of what this single, yet incredibly evocative, word means to drivers around the world. As we celebrate 70 years of Vantage in 2020, it allows us to delight in our superb sports car heritage. Vantage has always stood for engineering ambition, thrilling performance and exceptional beauty, and I’m pleased that today’s models more than live up to the standards set by their iconic forebears.” www.astonmartin.com

Kensington Park School 6th Form

N

eighbouring the Natural History Museum and Science Museum, KPS Sixth Form’s location is unique. What truly sets the school apart, however, is the learning experience they offer their students. Their approach blends the best elements of established Sixth Form schooling with the characteristics of a college environment to create a bridge between school and university. Small class sizes help focus students’ learning in lessons that are delivered by some of the finest teachers in London. Their pastoral system, based on the Oxbridge tutorial model, is something that drew praise from Ofsted (in October 2018). Students have weekly one-to-one meetings with their tutors, who have oversight of their progress and wellbeing. Parents receive a weekly report from tutors with an update on their personal development. The location encourages students and teachers to take learning out of the classroom and ground it in practical research. They have close links with Imperial College, where students enjoy their lunch and benefit from access to gym and sports facilities. Experiences such as these provide a valuable taste of university life, helping students mature and ensuring they are well-equipped to hit the ground running when they take the step up to

university. For families interested requiring boarding, the state-of-the-art boarding house, situated in a prime location is truly ‘home to a 21st Century experience’. Boarders have the unique opportunity to explore one of the world’s greatest cities – predominantly on foot! Last year, students have been on a real smorgasbord of trips, providing a mix of cultural enlightenment, sporting entertainment and good old-fashioned fun. On the entertainment front, the common room provides a relaxing place to wind down every evening to cinematic film nights or friendly foosball matches. Boarders also frequently praise the team of onsite caterers, who ensures that the dining menu is inviting and fresh! More than anything, being a new school has enabled Kensington Park School to put their students in the centre of what they do. Many schools talk of an approach focused on the individual but at KPS they have this running through the veins of the school. The students thrive under their care and in the space of this one year, they have demonstrated this through resilience, kindness and passion for learning. Luxury in

Cornwall Claire Spreadbury checks in to Luxury Lodges in Cornwall and discovers the brand’s expansion plans.

A

s I lie, face down, sniffing in the scent of TempleSpa’s Breath Of Life before having all the stresses and strains massaged out of my shoulders, I conclude all family holidays should be like this. Having time together to make memories is so important, but so too is just a little time out. It’s something Sharon Hurley is very aware of. She set up Luxury 38 JUNE 2020

Lodges - a collection of resorts throughout the UK (two in Cornwall, one in the Lake District and a new launch coming soon to Wales) - in 2015, because she couldn’t find anything for “busy families, seeking practical but stylish holidays in the UK”. She wanted to create a space where families could enjoy quality time together, but also get away from the stresses of everyday life. And she’s achieved it. At Clowance, in South Cornwall, the

games room playing pool or creating masterpieces on the Lego wall, leaving you time to relax over dinner. The pool area has also been invested in, and there are plenty of other activities to try. Croquet on the lawn, tennis courts and a well-equipped gym mean you can burn off any cream teas you might be consuming when you’re down there. Or, if you fancy something a little more thrill-enducing, H2O Training offers SUP lessons, fitness classes and board hire, archery sessions and kayaks, and as Clowance is only five miles from the coast, you don’t need to travel far. If you do want to explore the local area, it’s a 20-minute drive to Porthtowan Beach, which sits in a designated Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty and won a Blue Flag beach award in 2019. The surf is sparkling and clear, and there are gorgeously steep coastal walks, a sandy play park and a couple of nice cafes. The Unicorn On The Beach is definitely worth a visit - check out the eye-bogglingly huge Chelsea buns which sit atop the bar, calling your name while you order a local cask ale. So, are the best family holidays self-catering ones? With the new Welsh launch set to be complete in early 2020, Hurley certainly thinks so. “I believe you should not have to compromise on style and quality, just because you have a family to cater for. We want to offer all the luxuries of hotel-quality accommodation, but with the freedom and flexibility of selfcatering.” Visit luxurylodges.com for more information and to book.

accommodation is lovely. Simple but stylish interiors, with great beds and linen for a quality night’s sleep, everything you need in an openplan self-catering living area, little extras like games for the kids, and outside space. So it’s a home from home, but with added luxuries, like a hot tub. The grounds are enormous - 97 acres of pretty parkland - so you can wander around, feed the ducks on the lake, swing high in the children’s playground, explore the boat house or play giant chess or draughts. There are a variety of lodges to suit different party sizes and pockets, and they’re all wonderfully spaced out, so you can sit and read outside, or let the kids run wild, without worrying about the neighbours. In spring 2019, Clowance completed its extensive £5million refurbishment of the Club House, which now offers a huge bar and restaurant overlooking all the gorgeous greenery. Plush, comfy sofas sit alongside funky mustard diner-esque booths. Blue velvet, orange leather and floral fabrics all pop against the neutral background, and the kids can lose themselves in the

nature I Luke Rix-Standing discovers the perfect mix of green and grey.

n an increasingly eco-conscious world, smoky, fume-filled cities often get a bad name. The car exhaust, the noise pollution, the grey, concrete brutalism - urban areas can feel claustrophobic, and it’s no wonder so many city-dwellers spend their weekends escaping to the country. But not every metropolis is so tree-free. Here are a few urban jungles that won’t make you choose between nature and culture...

Vancouver, Canada

Crowning a king of green cities is a remarkably difficult task (one entirely dependent on how you mark city limits), but whatever your metrics, Vancouver is pretty damn verdant. 1,000-acre Stanley Park is undoubtedly the park de la creme, with lakes, lily ponds, hiking trails, outdoor theatre performances and even a moonlit cinema.

Vienna, Austria

Ringed by 12,000 hectares of almost unbroken green belt, Vienna contains 280 imperial parks, and in March 2019, the Mercer Quality of Living Survey named it the world’s most liveable city for the 10th time in a row. For every one of its residents, Vienna contains nearly 100 square metres of green space - an astronomical ratio for a metropolis of 1.8 million souls. 40 JUNE 2020

Singapore, Singapore

Nicknamed ‘The Garden City’, Singapore spent decades nurturing nature under the watchful gaze of founding father Lee Kuan Yew. He personally planted around 60 trees during his premiership and demanded that city planners create leafy, tree-lined boulevards providing shelter from the glare of the tropical sun. Now local residents are reaping what they’ve sown, and most estimates class Singapore as by far the greenest city in Asia, if not the world.

Edinburgh, Scotland

One of the straight-up nicest cities in Europe, and somehow still under-appreciated, Edinburgh’s buildings are so attractive that they sometimes detract from the trees. In 2017, satellite analysis by ESRI declared the Scottish capital the UK’s most verdant city, with a whopping 49% green coverage, streets ahead (or indeed, behind) second-placed Glasgow.

Auckland, New Zealand

Zoom out on Auckland on Google Maps, and you’ll immediately see where it gets its green reputation. Auckland council administers 40,000 hectares of space split between 4,000 parks, pitches and farms, while designated walking trails criss-cross city and region. Though perhaps a bit of a trek for Europeans seeking a bright and breezy city break, New Zealand’s largest city rewards its visitors with more flora and fauna than some forests.

Oslo, Norway

When 95% of residents live within 300 metres of green space, does Oslo even count as urban? More a built-up park than a green city, estimates suggest that up to two thirds of the Norwegian capital is green in some way, while even the more urban areas are segmented by a network of waterways. Nestled within an amphitheatre of hills, Oslo was made the European Commission’s ‘Green Capital’ for 2019. JUNE 2020 41

WILDLIFE WEEKENDS With so much wildlife on our doorstep, you don’t have to travel far to discover nature, says Sarah Marshall.

S

o often, nature lovers travel long distances to observe wildlife in exotic locations. Seduced by the epic cinematography of documentaries such as Seven Worlds: One Planet, it’s easy to believe all the best animal encounters happen far away. But look a little harder closer to home and you’ll find a surprising number of species. The National Biodiversity Network collects data from different regions around the UK, working alongside 200 members and drawing from 223 million wildlife records, to create the NBN Atlas. But despite the great wealth of wildlife living on our doorstep, there’s a real risk it could disappear. According the the NBN’s 2019 State of Nature report, the UK’s biodiversity is declining, and 15% of species are threatened from extinction. Along with taking greater care of the environment by sticking to designated footpaths and avoiding littering, one of the best ways to protect our precious resources is to get out there and appreciate them. Based on data collected by NBN, Holidaycottages.co.uk have created an interactive map of the most biodiverse places in the UK, counting distinct species ranging from mammals and birds, to insects, plants and mushrooms. Here are three of the top places you might consider visiting...

DAME JUDI DENCH’S MOST FASHIONABLE MOMENTS FROM THE FIFTIES TO TODAY The actor and British Vogue cover star loves an intricate coat on the red carpet. WORDS: PRUDENCE WADE

A

t 85 years old, Judi Dench has become British Vogue’s oldest cover star. The actor - known for her roles in the James Bond franchise, Shakespeare in Love and more - is on the front cover of the fashion magazine’s June issue. In the accompanying profile, her daughter Finty Williams says: “After the photoshoot, she came back literally thinking she was Beyonce.” This isn’t the first time Dench has made a fashion splash. Not only has she been ruling the stage and the screen since the Fifties, but she’s had some pretty incredible looks along the way. Her style has always been timeless and classic, not slavishly tied to trends. Here are some of her biggest fashion moments.

The Fifties... Nowadays, most of us board flights wearing leggings and hoodies. This wasn’t the case in the 1950s; back in 1959, Dench touched down in London in a particularly chic, shaggy coat. Of course, this was all topped off by her signature pixie crop - a look the 85-year-old still models today. 58 JUNE 2020

The Sixties... Even though this is a stage costume, we’re still counting it as a huge fashion moment. Back in 1968, Dench played Sally Bowles in the musical Cabaret, and did so in a series of racy outfits befitting the iconic character.

The Seventies... Dench married fellow actor Michael Williams in February 1971. She did so in an outfit perfect for a winter bride, wearing a white coat with a fur hood and a big grin on her face.

JUNE 2020 59

Fashion & Beauty

The Eighties... Dench kept things sleek and elegant for the 1982 Baftas, wearing a black turtleneck outfit which would still very much work on the red carpet today.

The Nineties... When winning the best actress award for playing Queen Victoria in Mrs Brown at the 1998 Baftas, Dench showed you can never go wrong with a black velvet evening gown. But her undoubted signature style can be seen in her 1999 Oscars outfit, when she won best supporting actress for her role in Shakespeare in Love. It involved a floaty long dress, a chic coat over the top, and in this instance we have to give a special shout out to her intricate clutch.

60 JUNE 2020

The Noughties... Let’s take a moment to appreciate the actor’s blue crushed velvet coat and matching choker, worn to the premiere of Iris in 2002 - and hope she still has the jacket in her wardrobe. The Noughties was also very much Dench’s black phase, but she showed dark colours don’t have to be boring at the 2002 Academy Awards with a gown featuring delicate detailing around the waist. Like the legend that she is, for the premiere of Quantum Of Solace in 2008, Dench bedazzled ‘007’ onto the back of her neck. Dench didn’t used to wear a lot of colour, which is what makes the lemon gown worn to the premiere of Nine in 2009 such a knockout.

The 2010s... There was a stage when Dench would only really be seen wearing black on the red carpet. However, over the past decade or so she’s embraced colour, and is often seen wearing white - for example, the chic outfit for the 2012 premiere of Skyfall. The only arbiter of cool we’re interested in, Dench wore a black leather biker jacket on The Graham Norton show in 2014. She layered lots of delicate necklaces together - a jewellery trend which has recently taken over, making her a bon afide style icon. For the 2017 premiere of Victoria and Abdul, a film about the friendship between Queen Victoria and her Indian servant, Dench stepped out in a pale blue outfit with an beautifully embroidered coat.

HAIR TRANSPLANT BY DR MARK TAM regardless of the direction of the wind. Prior to your procedure, you will have the opportunity to discuss circumstances in which a cow-lick or rapid change of direction is undesirable, or counter productive to your hair’s coverage.

HIGHER DENSITY WITH CUSTOMISED RECIPIENT SITES

“A receding hairline can age a person’s face while some may feel it can get them feeling ‘down’”

r Tam is a Diplomat of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery. He graduated with Bachelor of Medicine, at the University of Southampton. He is a member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery and British Association of Hair Restoration Surgery. He holds a full registration with the General Medical Council with a Licence to Practice. Dr Tam is experienced specifically in the field of FUE Hair Restoration and he has worked in various reputable clinics and private practices in London, UK and abroad. This enabled him to refine his techniques in FUE surgery, also earning him the Phideas award for his work. Dr Tam also recently been voted best hair transplant surgeon in London (Doctors Choice Award Hair Transplant Surgeon City Winner: London). A receding hairline can age a person’s face while some may feel it can get them feeling ‘down’. While there are medications and non-surgical therapy available to stop further hair loss, it does not restore what was lost. A hair transplant will be able to restore the areas of lost hair and is a longer-lasting solution to the problem of hair loss.

NATURAL-LOOKING RESULTS THROUGH NATURAL DIRECTION

Which direction is your hair pointing towards? Forward, to the left, or is there a slight change of direction on the right? Dr Tam follows your natural hair direction as much as possible; because he knows that it’s only by following your biological direction that the most naturally looking hairline can be achieved – 64 JUNE 2020

When it comes to creating recipient sites for your grafts, one can use generic surgical tools, but since it is essential to match the size of the site as close as possible – both to the size of your grafts and even to the depth of the grafts – only a custom made incision tool can satisfy such necessity. To ensure the closest match, an optimal one, Dr Tam hand-cuts each and every single one of the blades he uses, himself. Not only will the site created by these custom blades fit your grafts perfectly, it also means that more incisions can be made in a given area without additional injury, enabling a higher density. In short, the final result is a denser hairline to look at in the mirror.

MINIMAL SIGNS OF THE FUE PROCEDURE

One of the keys to minimizing visible signs of the FUE procedure in the donor area, lies in the minute size of the surgical punch used, combined with an appropriate spacing between follicles. The results are clear: minimal signs of scarring at the donor sites, allowing you the freedom to adopt various hairstyles, be it long or short. Donor area healing is subject to individual healing characteristics. You may still see signs of FUE if you shave your hair off completely. THE ALPHABET OF VITAMINS It’s time to know the benefits of vitamins A through to F. Prudence Wade asks the experts.

V

itamins are good for us. A well-rounded diet helps us get all the vitamins we need to be healthy, but how about the ones you need for your skin? Of course, you can eat certain things to boost skin health, but your routine should also involve a range of topically applied vitamins, to help your complexion be as clear and glowing as possible. It seems like there’s a whole alphabet of vitamins doing different things for your skin, which is why we’re breaking down each one you need. Disclaimer: we’re using ‘alphabet’ fairly loosely here, as in reality, the main vitamins you should be looking out for run from A to F. Don’t worry, it’s not like you need to add millions of new things into your regime, you’ll likely find lots of these vitamins combined into one product. This is the low-down on the alphabet of vitamins in skincare, and why you should consider using them...

Vitamin A

A

There are many types of vitamin A, but the most common one in 66 JUNE 2020

skincare is retinol. This is a hero ingredient, with medical director at Cosmetics Doctor Dr Amber Woodcock saying: “When applied to the skin, it stimulates the production of collagen and elastin (leading to plumper, stronger skin). It stimulates the cells to turnover, refreshing dull skin and helping to clear acne. Retinol also corrects pigmentation and UV damage, thus helping to even out your skin tone.” With these kinds of benefits, you should definitely be thinking about adding retinol into your skincare routine - but do so with caution. Woodcock’s main piece of advice is to “go slowly” with it. “There is no rush, apply a small amount one to two times a week, and slowly increase as tolerated,” she says. “Always use sunscreen every day to protect your skin.” As with most ingredients, everyone’s skin will respond differently.

IN SKINCARE “I always recommend my clients to trial retinol products with low dose and low frequency, to test their skin’s acceptability,” says Ada Ooi, founder of 001 Skincare. “You can always build it up, but once your skin gets ‘burnt’, it can take weeks for the ingredients to get out of the body’s system and the skin to heal.” Olay Regenerist Retinol24 Night Serum With Retinol & Vitamin B3, £34.99, Boots

B Vitamin B

The most popular type of vitamin B is B3, also known as niacinamide. “B3 can be used to treat acne or fine lines, due to its function to combat inflammation and improve the skin’s barrier,” explains Ooi. Woodcock is a big fan of B3, calling it ‘an amazing skincare ingredient’. “Niacinamide has strong antioxidant effects, helping to regenerate and repair our skin cells. It also reduces redness/ blotchiness (great for rosacea) and pigmentation,” she says. If this wasn’t enough, the doctor also states it “reduces wrinkles, regulates sebum (goodbye blocked pores) and is a potent anti-inflammatory helping to fight acne” - plus it’s safe to use in pregnancy. Malin + Goetz Resurfacing Face Serum, £58

Vitamin C

CD

This is one of the most common vitamins you’ll see in skincare products - and for good reason. Vitamin C contains antioxidants, which combats skin cell damage. “It helps fight pollutants in our skin, reduces UV damage, stimulates collagen production, reduces pigmentation and helps acne scarring,” explains Woodcock. However, you should be careful with your vitamin C products, keeping them out of the light and sealed tightly, because “it can become unstable (not active) easily”, notes Woodcock. The best time to apply vitamin C is in the morning after cleansing and before sunscreen. No7 Youthful Vitamin C Fresh Radiance Essence, £19.50, Boots

Vitamin D

Vitamin D isn’t something you apply to your skin, but Woodcock still calls it “a very important vitamin”. You get vitamin D from spending time in the sunshine - it’s necessary for our overall health, but remember to wear sunscreen to protect yourself from skin cancer.

E Vitamin E

“Vitamin E is another great antioxidant to help skin combat free radicals when they ‘attack’, while also helping to heal the damage done,” explains Ooi. She recommends

combining it with vitamin C “to prevent and treat tissue damage that leads to premature ageing”. So, why are antioxidants good for your skin? They protect cells from the damage pollutants and toxins from the environment do to our complexion, and as Woodcock says: “The more toxins you fight with antioxidants, the healthier your skin will be!” Liz Earle Skin Repair Gel Cream, £23, Boots

Vitamin F

Last in our tour of the key vitamins in skincare is F. These are “basically fats, also known as lipids”, explains Ooi. She gives the example of linoleic acid, a fatty acid which “provides moisture and plumpness without weighing down the skin; it fortifies and protects the skin’s barrier by maintaining a strong healthy stratum corneum (protective outer layer of skin). It also helps to balance the sebum level of oily and acne-prone skin, to reduce further breakouts.” Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque, £49.50

From Audrey Hepburn in the Fifties to Kim Kardashian in the 2010s, these are the women whose style summed up an era.

STYLE ICONS WHO DEFINED THE FASHION OF A DECADE

70 JUNE 2020

1960s: Twiggy

There’s no doubt Twiggy’s aesthetic sums up the 1960s: super slight, with a pixie crop and voluminous lashes. Twiggy - real name Lesley Lawson - was everything you’d want from a supermodel of the time, dressed head-to-toe in mod outfits from stripy dresses to the ever-present miniskirt (Mary Quant reigned supreme).

These are some of the most stand-out icons from the 1950s to today...

1950s: Audrey Hepburn

With her sleek black Givenchy dresses, strings of pearls and big sunglasses, Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in Breakfast At Tiffany’s is still one of the most fashionable characters in film. By its release in 1961 though, Hepburn was already a style icon in her own right, known for sleek silhouettes with nipped in waists, strapless dresses and a love of preppy collars. It’s an aesthetic that has proved timeless, and endlessly inspiring.

“There’s no doubt Twiggy’s aesthetic sums up the 1960s: super slight, with a pixie crop and voluminous lashes” 1970s: Bianca Jagger

Bianca Jagger was a Seventies it-girl, known for her association with the New York club, Studio 54, which was frequented by the likes of Andy Warhol and Elton John. Jagger was often seen in perfectly tailored suits with flared trousers, showing suiting wasn’t just for men, but also played with sequins, feathers and excellent hats. Born in Nicaragua, she shot to fame after marrying Mick Jagger and was known for her glamorous, party-girl life. Arguably Jagger’s most iconic moment came in 1977, when she mounted a white horse in Studio 54 on her 34th birthday. She did so in classic style: with blown-out hair and a slinky, off-the-shoulder dress. JUNE 2020 71

Fashion & Beauty

“Jagger was often seen in perfectly tailored suits with flared trousers, showing suiting wasn’t just for men, but also played with sequins, feathers and excellent hats”

72 JUNE 2020

1980s: Diana Ross

In all honesty, Diana Ross was a defining icon of the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties. She’s such a style chameleon she’s managed to adapt to each era, championing trends while keeping her own signature brand of glamour. Ross is arguably best known for her Eighties fashion though, which was full of shoulder pads, glitter and big hair.

2010s: Kim Kardashian

Love her or hate her, you can’t deny the impact Kim Kardashian has had on fashion. There are so many trends we can thank the Kardashian/Jenner clan for, spearheaded by Kim. She helped bring bicycle shorts to the fore, along with fancy athleisure wear, skintight dresses and an obsession with neutral tones and colour blocking. Whatever she wears is watched by eagle-eyed fans and retailers - so much so, Kardashian won a lawsuit against fast fashion brand Missguided USA last year, arguing it was “notorious” for “knocking off” the designer clothes she wore. We’re now in a new decade, which begs the question: is there space for a new style star to emerge and dominate the 2010s? Only time will tell.

1990s: Kate Moss

The fashion of the Seventies and Eighties was all about maximalism, but this all changed in the Nineties. Supermodel Kate Moss represented a more low-key, grungy kind of glamour, wearing a slew of jeans, spaghetti straps and barely-there slip dresses. This wasn’t an era of sparkles and sequins - instead, Moss become synonymous with the so-called ‘heroin chic’ trend: being super skinny and having that ‘just got out of bed’ look.

2000s: Rihanna

Nowadays, we know Rihanna as a red carpet powerhouse, and as the creative director of Fenty, making her the first black woman to run a major luxury house under LVMH. Back in the 2000s, Rihanna was still a fashion icon, but in a very different way to today. Instead of forging her own path, she pretty much wore every trend of the decade. Red carpet events appeared to be an exercise in Noughties fashion box-checking, from low-rise jeans to babydoll dresses and lots of ruched satin. This was before Rihanna found her fashion ‘voice’, but in the Noughties, we were all copying her. JUNE 2020 73

stablished in 1990 by Peter Bowles, Original BTC began life as an Oxford based home lighting brand and has secured two further lighting brands; heritage marine lighting manufacturer Davey Lighting and LED lighting manufacturer Beadlight, under its umbrella. Exports account for 50% of the production, supplying both the retail and contract markets around the world with an emphasis on the hotel, restaurant and aeronautical industries. With a family history steeped in retail, manufacturing and design, Peter designs the company’s products in conjunction with his son Charlie who became Director in 2012. Original BTC, Davey Lighting & Beadlight each offer a diverse and unique range of lighting designs. All brands draw inspiration from Britain’s rich post industrialisation history as well as incorporating modern tastes and trends with our very latest innovative designs. Quality, detail and an interesting mix of materials are integral to each brand’s designs. These are created by using the best quality raw materials to their upmost capability, paying great attention to the concept and form. From using centuries old techniques to the very latest technology, all lights are handmade and manufactured in the UK. Six production facilities include a metalworks, glassworks, and a Stoke-on-Trent bone china factory rescued from closure in 2002. It is here where the lighting designs, whether crafted from versatile bone china, the finest aluminium, copper, brass and iron, come to life. The detailing of cotton braided cables, satin chromed bases & contrasting coloured shades make Original BTC, Davey Lighting and Beadlight’s products uniquely distinctive and popular in Europe and beyond. “When it comes to scale, dramatically proportioned lights are the most obvious way to create impact. A generously sized pendant will create a talking point, whether lit or not. While scale is one way to make statement, it’s not always feasible to fit a grandly proportioned pendant in lower ceilinged rooms, so it’s worth exploring alternative approaches with your lighting scheme. Introducing colour via your light fittings is a sure-fire way of creating interest. It’s also particularly effective in contemporary kitchens and bathrooms where rows of shiny cabinets can look a little austere. Often referred to as jewellery for the home, the right light fittings can complete or transform your interior scheme. Just like jewellery, a flash of brass, copper or gold can lift your room, bringing a touch of opulence”, explains Peter Bowles, founder/MD, Original BTC. “Three is the magic number when it comes to multiple light fittings. Over a kitchen island or over a dining table – a row of three pendants will always create a strong visual impact. If you’re looking for a central lighting source, you can push the boat out even further with a grouping. Hung from a single ceiling rose, they do all the hard work for you,” concludes Peter. www.originalbtc.com

British-led design preserves Belgravia coach house style 80 JUNE 2020

bespoke up and over garage door beautifully designed and manufactured by Rundum Meir has brought 21st century functionality, access and security to a Grade II listed property in London’s exclusive Belgravia. One objective of the renovation project by RDB Architecture & Interiors sought to provide improved access to the garage of the property, which is located on one of the capital’s most desirable residential streets close to Eaton Square Gardens. This had to be done in a way that was sympathetic to the local architecture and compliant with the house’s listed status. The garage doors of the properties lining this cobblestone street are fine examples of the 19th century coach house tradition. Hence, any attempt to dramatically alter the external appearance of the doors would be detrimental to the elegant appeal of this upmarket neighbourhood and flatly refused by council planners. This was the ideal project for Rundum Meir, who custom manufacture every one of their garage doors to a suit a project’s

exacting requirements. Here, the client brief was to retain the look of the existing swing opening garage door, but enable up and over automated functionality for improved access and to make best use of the available space. A timber engineered door was the solution, finished in traditional black and complete with the original heavy cast iron Charles Collinge hinges. The door was manufactured by Rundum Meir’s skilled craftsmen at its factory in Germany, who also designed and built the overhead mechanism to comfortably accommodate its significant weight. Once manufactured, the garage door was weighed to enable the design of the correct spring counterbalance system and deliver many years of reliable operation. Danesch Missaghian, owner manager at Rundum Meir (UK) said: “The coach house is one of the most defining features of the British Victorian mews house, so it is vital that we preserve this tradition whilst making such properties suitable for today’s world. In being able to manufacture every garage door to meet very specific requirements, satisfying planners in the process, our customers do not have to make compromises as the bespoke up and over door at this property in Belgravia clearly demonstrates.” All Rundum Meir garage doors are designed here in the UK, manufactured in Germany and transported to the UK for assembly in readiness for installation. Every door is manufactured using the highest quality materials such as solid timber and tough extruded aluminium which can be insulated. To achieve the best possible garage door solution, architects in the UK, as well as across Europe and in the USA, can take advantage of Rundum Meir’s specialist design advice and expert technical support to help turn design concepts into reality. So what does interiors inspiration look like during the #stayhomestaysafe era? Things may be very different right now, but tapping into our creative side can bring a host of benefits - for our wellbeing as well as breathing new life into our living spaces (where we’re spending a lot more time than usual!). And there’s still a realm of possibilities to explore, especially when you play around with existing household items, pick up a paintbrush, or introduce a few key pieces available online. Here, interior designer Penny Ann Johnson of Penny Ann Interiors, who will be appearing at Grand Designs Live 2020, shows how to get creative with your interiors while in isolation... “What have you been doing with your time while we’re all confined to our own four walls? I’d imagine if you’re anything like me, you’re sat on your sofa staring at a bare wall wondering how to improve it, or thinking about how you can complete that spare bedroom you’ve been ignoring for a year,” says Johnson. “But lockdown, means limitations, things aren’t so readily available as retailers are abiding by government regulations. So here’s a few clever tips on how to have some fun with your interiors.”

Play with panelling

“Panelling is a thing. It’s everywhere at the moment; Insta-worthy 3D wall panelling is a modern version of period architecture. At first it seems a little ‘off the wall’ but in the right room, it can add great character without a lot of work. “Firstly play around with the width, pattern, orientation and height of the wall to come up with a design. Get yourself online to B&Q Homebase (use their click and car park collect service if available) and purchase some simple lengths of baton to help you create your masterpiece. “Measure your design out on the wall and secure the baton either

with grab adhesive or screws. Once it’s secured, choose a beautiful colour to help emphasis the statement. Sit back and watch the shadows cast their shade and your wall come to life.” Check out angelarosehome.com for inspiration.

Create a picture wall

“Picture walls are all the rage these days, a great way to fill that empty wall, show some self expression and make that space more homely. “Visit Amazon and search ‘Picture Gallery Frames’. There are some fab sets of 10-plus frames of varying sizes too, to help you create your picture wall. Have a think about what you’d like to put in your frames. “Pinterest is a great source for frame-able quotes, and these are a fab way to make the design feel more personal. Include some family photos - get them printed either via your home printer or a company like Snapfish, delivered to your door. Then get them hung, stand back and revel in the pride from seeing those important moments and people displayed beautifully in your home.” Check out posterstore.co.uk for inspiration.

Group decos and homewares

“They say three is a crowd... not in the case of interior styling it’s not! Think about the styling around your home, and think odd numbers. There’s something about grouping things in threes that leads the eye to move around the display. “Some people do prefer a symmetrical look but this needs to be done expertly and with sharp precision. Where as designing with odd numbers in mind allows a little more freedom,” she adds. “To kill some time in isolation, bring all your styling pieces together in one place, regroup them into three’s and redistribute them around your room. And then sit back and relax with a feeling of having a revived space with little effort.” Check out swoonworthy.co.uk for inspiration.

Style up your space with statement art

“Think smart with some statement art. In this uncertain world we’re all living in at the moment, support the little independent companies. Check out Etsy and search ‘Prints’. There are some fantastic artists, illustrators and designers, who are still working away to help you JUNE 2020 85

make your homes beautiful,” she suggests. “Artwork can be one of the most important parts to a room. It’s a talking point, and offers both the purchaser and onlooker the opportunity to think and express creatively. Find something that speaks to you, and look forward to that little package arriving from the outside world.”

Consider wall murals

“Get out the paint! We’re seeing a huge revival in wall murals. The idea offers such versatility to add character and personality to a room, you’d be mad not to devote at least one wall in your home to

an idea,” says Johnson. “So while we’re all getting in touch with our creative sides, delve into your garage and see what old paint pots you have stashed away. Companies like Mylands can still send you sample pots of their fantastic paints (I’m a big fan) to add to your colour library, while you’re searching for inspiration. “Whether it’s a geometrical or floral design, an abstract creation or ombre fade, that wall can be anything you want it to be. Let loose and go wild, it could be the most liberating thing you do during lockdown.” Check out lilitartstore.com for inpiration.

t’s no secret that the world of work is changing. With the rise of co-working and freelancing, it’s now possible to get down to business in just about any location. And yet if we’ve learnt anything from the sterile interiors of the early 90s, it’s that environment matters. Recent studies suggest that a well-designed space can lead to significant boosts in productivity and cognitive function — quantitative evidence of the “feel-good” factor of great design. With 50% of the UK now working remotely at least once a week, creating a functional home office has become an essential task if we wish to maintain boundaries between work and play. Here at Chaplins, we’ve been giving it some thought and have come up with our Home Office Style Guide to help you get it right first time.

Plan Like An Executive

When designing your home office, it’s good to take some time to visualise how everything will work together. Don’t forget to incorporate some sort of breakout zone — a space in which to think or read when you’re not obliged to be sat behind a keyboard. In smaller offices, this could be as simple as a generous pouf. In larger homes, a small sofa, armchair or (if you’re feeling particularly psychoanalytic) chaise lounge. Incorporating these elements ensures your office is a space you’ll actually enjoy spending time in, while accommodating for both active and passive work.

Are You Sitting Comfortably?

While the majority of offices are characterised by orthopaedic-looking chairs, designers have a long history of producing statement styles. 90 JUNE 2020

Some of the best date back to the mid-century, including iconic collections such as the Eames Aluminium Range and Knoll’s Executive Saarinen collection. Both offer top-notch ergonomics and a timeless design language to boot. Sustainable design lovers might also want to consider Vitra’s N02 Recycled Office Chair — crafted entirely from circular polypropylene and recycled aluminium. Lightweight and compact, it’s a great choice for those who are short on space.

No More Boring Desk Jobs

A great desk is the backbone of any contemporary home office. And whether small or stately, there are a variety of exciting options. For homes in which every square inch counts, look for compact desks with clean lines, hidden storage and handy charging points. In order to maximise the available floor space, opt for a chair with a lithe base like Gubi’s Beetle Swivel Chair. If space isn’t an issue, you can experiment with bold sweeping desks such as Zanotta’s Cavour or Cattelan Italia’s Wall Street — each offering a real interior power play. Where you position your desk is equally important. If your home

office benefits from lots of direct sunlight, be sure to orient your desk so that any screens aren’t out of action for portions of the day. Experimenting with layout can also affect how you experience your space. Try to avoid being cramped up against walls where possible. One option is to float your desk in the centre of the room, creating a focal point that will compel you to sit down and get things done.

Make Light Work of Your Daily Tasks

Modern task lighting is another must for any productive home office. As well as allowing you to work into the evening, it’ll help create a snug and inviting atmosphere – the perfect place to ponder all those frustrated souls on their morning commute. If your work involves sketching, drawing or examining projects, you’ll want to opt for a versatile lamp that allows you to shape and direct the light. Artemide’s Tolomeo and Flos’ Kelvin collections are particularly revered in this regard. For laptop-based work, any lamp that provides a soft gush of down-ward illumination will do the trick. If you don’t quite have room for a table lamp on your desk, consider experimenting with some strategically hung pendant lights. that you refer to constantly, then some linear shelving might be preferable to under-desk units or sideboards. One of the most flexible options available is USM’S Haller system. Modular in nature, it can be added to or subtracted from in accordance to your needs, making it ideal for homes of all sizes. Need some additional help planning your contemporary home office? Master The Art of Storage

Clutter can come in many forms. But whether it’s an overflowing inbox or a mass grave of admin, the effect is equally draining. Finding the right storage will help you keep your home office organised and a joyous place to work. ina Marika Tarnowski is the creative force behind Woodchip & Magnolia, a design house famed for its striking wallpaper, fabrics and bold fearless pattern. Aged just five she told her school teacher she was going to be a wallpaper designer and that’s exactly what she did after graduating from Leeds College of Art in 1997 with a BA (Hon’s) in Surface Pattern and Textile Design. Fast forward, and after 18 years as Head Stylist and Design Manager for British wallpaper house Graham & Brown, Nina has now gone solo. Alongside husband Paul, an industry expert who spent 16 years at the helm of Graham & Brown’s technical team, Nina launched Woodchip & Magnolia with a determination to do things her own way. Her vision to bring together her creativity with Paul’s technical know-how have made Woodchip & Magnolia unique in the pioneering way they use traditional design skills in a digital world. Freed from the deadlines and seasonal launches most design houses adhere too, Nina can launch the designs she loves when the mood takes her. Her designs are available to order the minute they are unveiled online. With a determination to protect the environment at the heart of their business, Woodchip & Magnolia manufacture all their own wallpaper and fabrics in-house so their business remains as eco-friendly and sustainable as it possibly can be. They work with artists they love and boast unique ranges, including a stunning collection of wallpapers and velvets from vintage style queen Pearl Lowe – their wallpapers now hang in the bedrooms of supermodels, five-star hotels and legions of family homes. With its clear design and new accentuated lighting it endeavours to make summer even more beautiful. The markilux “pergola compact” is the right solar protection solution for houses to which it is not possible to fit a classical folding-arm awning. The cover extends on lateral guide tracks that rest calmly on two slim support posts at the front. They provide additional support. With its size, this smart awning is suited mainly for narrow patios that require graceful solar protection. The cover cassette against the wall measures in height and depth only twelve-and-a-half centimetres, yet the small “pergola compact” can shade an area of up to 18 square metres. A new lighting option below the cassette accentuates the slim shape of the awning by means of an LED light strip that can be dimmed via remote control.
