PUGWASH, SANDBANKS

There’s treasure to be found in Sandbanks; a home fit for a pirate comes to market for the first time in almost 30 years.

“Once in a while we have the pleasure of discovering a true hidden gem in Sandbanks. Even after so many years helping people buy and sell in this exclusive and beautiful part of the world we can still be taken by surprise.” Says Robert Dunford at Tailor Made Estate Agents.

“When we were asked by the family to visit 51 Banks Road, of course we knew it was going to be a very special place. Situated in one of the most sought after parts of the Peninsula where properties can enjoy fantastic views of both sea and harbour (even within the same room!), the house had been in the same hands for almost 30 years; a sure sign that it had been a cherished home. When we stepped inside we were not disappointed.”

George White purchased 51 Banks Road in 1995 and lived here as his main residence until his passing in 2021. The house was the backdrop to a life well lived full of parties, family, love and laughter. Soon after moving in George began putting his own mischievous sense of style into the property with interior design touches, updates and refurbishments that tell us much about the man and his passion for Sandbanks and the sea.

The first notable change was to give the house a name, and what better than Pugwash after the famous Captain from the children’s cartoon? “He loved the humour of the Pugwash stories and living by the sea brought out the pirate in him” his daughter remembers, “He moved to Pugwash just before Christmas and missed a real log fire, so they got his friend Paul to paint one on the wall with Captain Pugwash sitting on the mantelpiece!” The character became a motif through the house featuring in stained glass and more paintings. But George’s whimsical tastes went further with the entrance stairway fully frescoed with painted metal panels, complete with portholes and rivets creating a submarine world, much to the delight of his grandchildren.

The door into the garage is a submarine door and what lies beyond was far from a usual garage; with a strip-lit red carpet leading through to a basement cinema room fully fitted with bespoke red velvet seating. “When they had the cinema installed they had a grand opening party of famous film characters with the help of friends involved in the film business. George was, of course, Captain Sparrow, a character that inspired the feathers he wore in his long hair”.

Always keen to be different and stand out from the crowd George was a creative man who loved to express himself through his unique sense of style with ever changing haircuts, beard styles and fashion choices; “Dad LOVED clothes, always looking so cool, there was no-one like him!” his daughter remembers.

Upstairs on the first floor the views really steal the show and it’s easy to see how well this home fulfilled George’s dream to live by the water. A bespoke galley kitchen overlooks the harbourside with a balcony to enjoy sundowners with the stunning sunsets. A further reception room and sun-drenched conservatory overlook the gorgeous sandbanks beach to the rear. “He would sit in the sunroom during the day with the sun shining through, then he’d move upstairs onto the balcony and sit on his lovely comfy wooden deck armchairs with a drink and a book and watch the sunset over Brownsea Island… ‘it’s not very rock n roll’ he would say but he was happy”. Bedrooms with windows offering picture perfect views over the golden sands and blue seas, bathrooms daubed with the Jolly

Roger skull and crossbones and everywhere nods to the seaside location with driftwood frames and handles, ships lights, portholes and other memorabilia lovingly collected and crafted; “Dad made driftwood furniture including a wonderful throne! He loved to go beachcombing for sea glass , driftwood and heart shaped stones he would call ‘his treasures’”.

Pugwash was more than a house with great views, it was a home with a heart, a retreat from the world where you could relax and enjoy special times together making memories that will last forever. “I will always remember just sitting with Dad outside on the deck talking, people watching or being in companiable silence watching the waves roll in”.

The family have made the difficult decision to part with 51 Banks Road to enable it to start a new chapter. The property has a perfect plot for a rebuild opportunity or would make a fascinating refurbishment project. Whatever the future has in store for Pugwash it is certain that the new owner will be able to take on a legacy of sharing happy times, fun and a love of Sandbanks with future generations.
