Improve your space, mind and mood this March….

Spring Clearing Week is just around the corner. Unlike the traditional spring clean, the focus is on clearing the decks of any physical, and consequently mental, clutter. Running from 20-26 March, over 400 members of APDO Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers will be sharing their knowledge and advice to help the UK to declutter and streamline activities in their homes and workspaces.

Katherine Blackler, the UK’s first Certified Professional Organizer (CPO®) and Past-President of APDO explains “Reducing the amount of things you need to clean, maintain, repair and replace saves you time and money. This in turn reduces stress and frustration. Daily agitations like misplacing car keys or running out of an ingredient can be avoided if you first simplify then introduce systems for all the household to follow. Being able to see what you have and knowing where to find it can make a huge difference to how we tackle the day and how we perceive tasks on our agenda.”

She believes that ensuring all the items you own have a logical place to live makes it easier to regain calm and order – even when it feels more like a tornado has been through your home!

Katherine’s top tips to declutter to feel better:

1. Declutter BEFORE buying any more storage so you can see what you really need.

2. Don’t get overwhelmed trying to tackle the entire house at once. Choose one room and focus on just one area at a time (e.g. the floor, countertop, cupboard, or drawer).

3. Allocate time to sort through things. Switch off and eliminate likely distractions.

4. Getting started is often the hardest part. Take little steps if giant leaps are unrealistic. But definitely start.

5. Take ‘before’ photos. You’ll be inspired by how far you’ve come.

6. Reward yourself for your achievements, both during and at the end of the process (ideally with experiences and not more ‘stuff’!).

7. Ask for impartial and professional help if it seems daunting, or it becomes too emotional reviewing belongings with your friends and family.
