The Chelsea Townhouse

The Chelsea Townhouse is the newest addition to the Iconic Luxury Hotels portfolio, who operate some of the country’s most prestigious hotels, including Chewton Glen in Hampshire’s New Forest and Cliveden House in Berkshire.

In late 2023, the former Draycott Hotel, underwent an extensive transformation to become The Chelsea Townhouse a 36-bedroom hotel with the feel of an elegant private home.

Perched on Chelsea’s exclusive Cadogan Gardens, surrounded by majestic trees and serene streets, it’s the perfect home from home for the modern traveller.

The hotel is set across three characterful Queen Anne-style, Victorian red-brick townhouses, with an grand entrance giving way to a monochrome patchwork tiled floor and sweeping staircases and a tiny tiny lift (which I suspect transported food rather than people back in the day).

Guests can meander just a few moments down the tree-lined streets to discover the completely pedestrianised Pavilion Road, London’s longest mews that runs parallel to Sloane Street.

Once Victorian stable blocks but now a veritable haven of activity for independent artisans; from butcher to bakers to ice cream shops, cheesemongers and independent restaurants.

Architects Gary Kellett were appointed to oversee the restoration, injecting new life into the property whilst respecting its eclectic heritage and original architecture. You’re welcomed by light and airy interiors married with deep mahogany antique furniture, ornate crown mouldings and ‘objects of curiosity’ from around the world.

Modern Ruark DAB radios, GHD hair dryers and award-winning Harrison Spinks beds with crisp white linen bedding help guarantee a super slumber in style. While lovingly restored pieces from the former

hotel, antique artwork, gilded mirrors and original fireplaces give rooms a timeless feel.

Also a welcome ‘Chelsea Bun’ delights guests on arrival (or a delicious gluten-free brownie if you’re me!)

Guests have access to the lush greenery in private Cadogan Gardens, a tranquil oasis with towering mulberry trees and chirruping birds. You can enjoy s breakfast buffet overlooking the delightful gardens and devour homemade nutty granola, chia pudding, artisan yoghurts, stewed compotes, just-baked pastries, and homemade jams.

Guests can use to the facilities of the Townhouse’s sister hotel, 11 Cadogan Gardens, including a private gym. It’s also home to Hans’ Bar & Grill, a vibrant all-day restaurant offering delicious dishes, such as steaks and signature ‘iconic’ burgers, all naturally complimented with a glass of crisp champagne.

The Townhouse’s prime location offers so much to those keen to explore the best of the SW area including Knightsbridge and Belgravia.

Harrods, the world’s leading luxury department store is a stones-throw away and nearby is the world-famous King’s Road, which has been a place to saunter, sip and shop since 1830. Several cultural attractions are within walking distance which include: Cadogan Hall, Chelsea Physic Garden, Saatchi Gallery, The V&A, The Natural History Museum and more. Rooms at The Chelsea Townhouse are booked on a double occupancy basis, inclusive of breakfast and all taxes. Starting rates from £249 per night thechelseatownhouse.com

TTHE CONNAUGHT UNVEILS THE KING’S LODGE

he Connaught, the legendary Mayfair hotel, has stood as an emblem of discreet and authentic elegance since 1897. Last month, in keeping with its tradition of heritage and craftsmanship, The Connaught unveiled a one-ofa-kind suite – The King’s Lodge - a collaboration between Guy Oliver, The Connaught’s renowned legacy interior designer, and Turquoise Mountain, a charity supporting artisans across the Levant, Afghanistan, Myanmar and India.

Founded in 2006 by His Majesty King Charles III – then the Prince of Wales – Turquoise Mountain supports artisans with everything they need to thrive and revitalise their heritage. The charity works in Afghanistan, Myanmar and the Middle East, combining crafts practice, training and heritage buildings.

The King’s Lodge, located on the fifth floor of The Connaught, is designed to showcase the highest level of craftsmanship, from the intricate architectural woodwork made in Jordan by Syrian artisans, to handwoven carpets and miniature paintings from Afghanistan, fabrics from Myamar, as well as carved marble panels and mirrored glass insets from India. Guests entering the suite are immediately transported, enveloped in a space that showcases the authentic traditions from each destination. The four-poster bed, a work of art into itself, is one-of-a-kind, with motifs carefully hand-

drawn and crafted for this particular suite.

The King’s Lodge suite is an homage to artisans and very much in keeping with The Connaught’s larger support of artists which has always been integral to the hotel. A portion of the proceeds of every booking from both The Prince’s Lodge and The King’s Lodge goes directly to Turquoise Mountain and their programming to support artisans.

CHRISTIAN DIOR, CHRISTIAN BÉRARD.

JOYFUL MELANCHOLY

A NEW BOOK PUBLISHED

BY GALLIMARD

32 MARCH 2024 FEATURE

This jjoint biography of Christian Dior and Christian Bérard’s sets us out into a fascinating period, from inter-war Paris to the postwar Café Society.

In a munificently detailed book published by Editions Gallimard in collaboration with Dior, Laurence Benaïm looks back at the sincere ties uniting Christian Bérard and Christian Dior. On the surface, everything seems to oppose them: the extravagant, ultra-sensitive Bébé contrasts with the discreet, mysterious Monsieur Dior.

Yet it was love at first sight.

“All of Dior is in Bérard, all of Bérard is in Dior. This book is not a two-headed biography — it is a meandering in the heart of a history haunted by dreams, affinities, and secrets sewn in the lining of vanishing time.” Laurence Benaïm*

In the 1930s, Christian Dior, then a partner in the Pierre Colle gallery, exhibited the young Bérard’s paintings alongside those of Dalí, Picasso and Matisse. A few years later, when he opened a house in his own name, Christian Bérard gave him his bountiful support.

In return, the couturier entrusted Bérard with the decoration of his first boutique, Colifichets, on Avenue Montaigne. Christian Bérard advised him to adorn this initial setting in toile de Jouy – the celebrated signature-print and emblem of French savoir-faire, that would become an iconic Dior reference.

“Two destinies that respectfully echo and influence each other; two Christians, two men always brought together by their shared passions”

“The seeming casualness brought the whole place to life,” Monsieur Dior wrote referring to the work of his friend, ”that arbiter of parties, of all elegance…”.

The book Christian Dior, Christian Bérard. Joyful melancholy – sumptuously illustrated with works of art and precious photographs – brings to life the Paris of artists, from the Belle Epoque to the Liberation, from the Boeuf sur le toit to the post-war Café Society.

Two destinies that respectfully echo and influence each other; two Christians, two men always brought together by their shared passions, art and beauty in all their forms. From page to page, they appear in the truth of their purest talent, between triumphs and doubts, promises and secrets.

An ode to friendship and dreams.

The book can be purchased at Dior boutiques in New Bond Street and Sloane Street, and also WHSMITH (£30), Amazon (£25), World of Books (£22) and Waterstones (£30).

ROSEMEAD PREPARATORY Celebrates Glowing ISI Inspection

Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery, Dulwich, is delighted to announce the findings of its latest inspection from the Independent Schools Inspectorate. The inspection, which was carried out in November 2023, praised Rosemead’s academic approach to learning, pastoral care and support and the positive influence of the school’s values, vision, and leadership.

“A highly customised approach to every pupil’s academic progress is a significant strength of the school,” the report explained. ‘A customised learning programme in mathematics, English and reasoning caters for pupils in Year 4 and above. This, supported by an extensive enrichment programme and much support for individuals, impacts on all groups of pupils, enabling them to make good and often rapid progress over time.”

Speaking about the report, Head of Rosemead, Graeme McCafferty explained: “I am absolutely thrilled to share our outstanding recent inspection report with our community. One

standout strength that truly shines through is our highly customised approach to every child’s academic progress. The report highlighted our dedication to tailoring personal learning programs for each child, particularly in subjects like Maths, English, VR, and NVR.”

Graeme added: “What’s more, our extensive learning support programme ensures that every individual in our school community not only succeeds but thrives. This recognition reaffirms our commitment to providing the best possible education for every child at Rosemead, and I couldn’t be prouder of our school’s achievement.”

Rosemead’s early years’ provision was also praised in the summary findings. ‘Leaders in the early years effectively ensure staff have high expectations of the behaviour and achievement of children,’ the report found. ‘The positive relationships between adults and children in the early years help children settle in quickly and feel safe and happy.’

It added: ‘Children in the early years achieve well from their

SCHOOL & NURSERY

varied starting points. Adults engage with the children effectively and use appropriate questioning to develop children’s vocabulary and understanding. Children from an early age become confident speakers and develop their reading skills well.

The report comes at an exciting time for Rosemead. Last year, the school announced a merger with St Dunstan’s College joining St Dunstan’s Community of Schools.

St Dunstan’s Group Head, Nick Hewlett, said: “The whole community is delighted with the ISI inspection for Rosemead. The report rightly recognises the outstanding education Rosemead is offering as one of south London’s leading prep schools. Bringing our schools together has been a wonderful opportunity, allowing our staff and students to work closer together, learning from one another and enhancing our students’ educational journeys. I pay tribute to the staff, children and parents who are part of this onward journey, and I am very excited by Rosemead’s future.”

Noting the recent merger, the report highlighted: ‘Governors and senior leaders work well together to promote the effectiveness of the school. Governors’ vision has a positive influence on every area of the school and drives continual improvement, for example, the recent decision to merge with another school.’

Alongside the academic excellence, the report praised the ‘positive’ Roots of Rosemead, which are the school’s values system. ‘The curriculum and communication of school values, known as the ‘Roots of Rosemead’ encourage respect and strengthen pupils’ appreciation of the diversity of the school and wider community. ‘The consistent promotion of these values helps develop pupils’ moral understanding.’

The full inspection report can be found on Rosemead’s website, and the school will be hosting their next open morning on Thursday 25 April 2024.

BUSY HAPPY CHILDREN

Research shows that busy, happy children do well in the classroom. With a multitude of sports, arts, life skills and academic enrichment opportunities on offer, Ballard offers something for everyone.

At Ballard, our excellent co-curricular provision underpins both pupils’ wellbeing and academic achievements. Throughout their journey, from Nursery to GCSE, we teach them key life and practical skills. In her 2012 “Chief Medical Officer of England, Annual Report”, Professor Dame Sally C Davies states “promoting physical and mental health in schools creates a virtuous circle reinforcing children’s attainment and achievement that in turn improves their wellbeing, enabling children to thrive and achieve their full potential.”

Our leadership structure underlines the importance we place on the balance of these elements at Ballard – we have a Deputy Head Academic, a Deputy Head Pastoral and a Director of Co-curricular. By combining a rigorous academic approach with proactive pastoral care and increasing our co-curricular activities to 175 per week (Autumn Term 2023) we are seeing our pupils thrive in and out of the classroom.

In her study, “An Unequal Playing Field” (2019), the Social Mobility Commission Chair, Dame Martina Milburn, found that co-curricular activities led to several “…

important benefits - a sense of belonging, increased confidence and social skills, which are invaluable to employers.” It is not just weekly activities that engage pupils; independent schools offer trips to broaden their pupils’ horizons. At Ballard, pupils start their visits in Reception, with their first residential trip happening in Year 5, during our Summer Trips Week. Whether it is a trip to the zoo, museums or a foreign country, these trips are designed to build confidence and instill a love of learning. They also allow for immersion in areas of interest, for example, our music tour to Barcelona this summer and an annual fully funded scholars’ trip; this year we took our scholars to visit the Hadron Collider at CERN and the UN HQ in Geneva.

44 MARCH 2024

In 2014, Public Health England reported that schools that put in place programmes to develop children’s social and emotional skills on average witness an 11% increase in attainment. The success of this approach was reflected in Ballard’s latest set of GCSE results, which, once again, bucked the national trend; this was particularly for the highest grades. On average, all pupils gained an improvement of 0.85 of a grade above their expected level in all their subjects - incredible value added.

Classes are large enough to facilitate lively, challenging lessons, yet small enough so that every pupil is known. This allows staff to help pupils develop successfully, both academically and pastorally. It allows for a tailored approach to teaching, encouraging creativity, another essential element in education.

Ballard continues to invest in the school, equipment and staff. From the very start of their educational journey, pupils can use Ballard’s fantastic facilities, including an Olympic-sized astro, swimming pool and Performing Arts Centre. Specialist Dance, Gymnastics, PE and Music lessons are taught from Nursery; with Yoga, Forest and Beach School from Reception, and French introduced in Year 1. By Year 3, pupils have specialist DT, Expressive Arts, ICT and Science lessons with Spanish added in Year 5. Year 6 pupils are all taught by GCSE specialist teachers with setting for key subjects and an array of enrichment tools to develop pupils’ skills further.

Ballard has extensive grounds for pupils to play in and learn outdoors. Our 34 acre site is home to an abundance of nature for pupils to explore, including: two Forest School sites, trees to climb, ditches to jump, ponds in which to dip, streams to dam, gardens to grow, bee hives to harvest and bluebell woods and wild meadows for flowers. We also have several purpose-built play areas and equipment, including scooters and trikes, football goals and volleyball nets for impromptu games, ensuring that pupils enjoy their play as much as their lessons.

“By educating the whole child, we develop wellrounded individuals, fully equipped to deal with college, careers and our community”

“By educating the whole child, we develop well-rounded individuals, fully equipped to deal with college, careers and our community. Alongside inspiring lessons, our extensive co-curricular programme encourages pupils to find their niche, improve skills, develop talents, or discover a new passion. Years of experience enable us to nurture each child to be the best they can be, adding value to their GCSEs and helping them with those all-important next steps. We ignite passions and develop skills, helping each child to reach their potential, instilling a love of learning, and having lots of fun on the way.”

– Mr Andrew McCleave, Headmaster. So, if you want to see your child thrive, contact Ballard’s Registrar –registrar@ballardschool.co.uk or call (01425) 626900, to book in for an Open Morning or private tour.

The contest between two rowing crews from the UK’s two greatest universities, Oxford and Cambridge, now spans 195 years of sporting rivalry - and established itself as the epitome of amateur sport, raced by student athletes who combine academic rigour with elite physical prowess.

Since the second race in 1836, the contest has taken place in London and has become synonymous with British tradition and excellence, attracting global interest and offering an unrivalled educational experience to the student athletes who take part.

The Boat Race takes place on the famous Championship Course that stretches over 4.25 miles of tidal Thames in West London, between Putney and Mortlake.

The men’s and women’s top crews are known as the Blue Boats after the award their universities give them for competing in The Boat Race. Both universities have reserve crews. ‘Located in North Norfolk, Cley Windmill was built in the early 19th century and has since been converted into a beautiful place to stay. Perched next to the River Glaven in the beautiful village of Cley-nextthe-Sea, the five-storey tower mill gazes out over reed beds, the Cley marshes and countryside as far as the eye can see. The ten quaint bedrooms, six inside the tower itself, are the epitome of character and style, with names like Miller’s Room, Wheat Chamber, Barley Bin and Boathouse indicative of the room’s historic purpose. There’s plenty of evidence of the mill’s original use with grinding stones now used as steps and all the mechanics for the sails to turn. Pay particular attention to Stone Room (with private balcony), which was singer James Blunt’s bedroom back when the mill belonged to his family. Rooms are warm and cosy, with a wonderful old meets new philosophy – hook up to the wi-fi while lying in your four-poster bed; look out onto fields of heather while showering in your stylish wet room. HOW TO WEAR THE PANTONE COLOUR OF THE YEAR 2024

THE TREND FORECASTER PREDICTS THIS PEACHY HUE WILL BE POPULAR THIS YEAR. BY KATIE WRIGHT

Pantone has announced its Colour of the Year 2024 is Peach Fuzz.

The trend forecasting company said the pastel shade was chosen because it highlights “our desire for togetherness with others and the feelings this creates”.

Reminiscent of peach skin, shade 12-1023 is said to be “a gift to the senses, creating a symbiotic relationship between our sense of taste, sight, touch, and scent”.

The faded coral tone is much paler than last year’s Viva Magenta and 2022’s Very Peri (a periwinkle blue).

80 MARCH 2024 FASHION & BEAUTY

“Peach Fuzz presents a fresh approach to a new softness,” said a statement unveiling the shade on Instagram.

The “subtly sensual” colour is “a heartfelt peach hue bringing a feeling of tenderness and communicating a message of caring and sharing, community and collaboration.”

The cool-toned hue is similar to that of the Gucci gown worn by actor Jenna Ortega on the 2023 Golden Globes red carpet.

It also harks back to the peaches and cream make-up trend as seen on the likes of Margot Robbie (who, let’s not forget, almost singlehandedly ushered in the ubiquitous Barbie Pink trend), Hailey Bieber and Natalie Portman.

Launched in 1999, every year a panel of experts at the Pantone Colour Institute analyse global trends in entertainment, art, travel, fashion and technology.

Together, they select a colour that they think represents the current zeitgeist and will resonate with people around the world in the coming year.

Wondering whether you should start stocking up on Peach Fuzz fashion buys in preparation for 2024?

“They select a colour that they think represents the current zeitgeist and will resonate with people around the world in the coming year”

“Peach Fuzz will bring a refreshing and gentle sophistication to your wardrobe,” says Cliff Bashforth, managing director of Colour Me Beautiful Europe.

Compared to the last two shades it’s a “subtler and more refined shade, rendering it a versatile choice” in terms of clothing and accessories.

“One of Peach Fuzz’s strengths lies in its gender-neutral appeal,” Bashforth continues.

“As the fashion industry progresses towards greater inclusivity and the dismantling of gender stereotypes, this colour emerges as a symbol of transcending traditional boundaries, appealing to a diverse spectrum of individuals.”

From floaty summer dresses and cosy knits to suits and sportswear, peach pieces can work whatever the season.

Experiment with different fabric textures and prints, Bashforth suggests: “The incorporation of Peach Fuzz into patterns, such as floral prints or geometric designs, can add depth and interest to garments.”

And remember you don’t have to wear it head to toe: “Maybe

shoes, sandals, a handbag or even a belt can elevate your look and bring you bang up to date without spending a fortune.”

Worried that you might look ‘washed out’ by this pale peach? Bashforth says that people with dark hair and eyes (no matter what their skin tone) may want to team it with other colours.

“You’ll need to balance your contrasting appearance by wearing Peach Fuzz with darker neutrals such as charcoal or burgundy,” he says.

“Should you wish to make an entrance and turn heads, team it with purple.”

On the other hand, it’s good news for blondes (from mousey to platinum) with porcelain to olive skin: “This is the perfect shade for you – team it with taupe, cocoa or pewter for an elegant tonal look, or sage green if you want to be enviably fashionable this coming season.”

Want to jump on the Colour of the Year bandwagon right away? Ethical footwear brand Cariuma has collaborated with Pantone on a range of Peach Fuzz trainers.

Available in four styles, the minimalist sneakers are made with sustainably sourced materials including natural rubber, organic cotton canvas and recycled plastic.

CHOCOLATE-BROWN TREND

This chic shade is a staple you can rely on, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

Call it espresso, café au lait or cortado, when it comes to getting a caffeine fix in the fashion world, chocolate brown is where it’s at. Super versatile, add a dash of creamy beige or wear it straight up… brown is an earthy, warming tone that doesn’t shout and stays true to form in its classic style.

Far from frothy and so much more than a safe neutral, this designers’ favourite has re-emerged as a standout item for its warmth and bankability –brown is universal and suits everyone!

HERE’S WHAT’S HOT ON THE HIGH STREET…

The jaunty jacket

“A jacket will be your hardest working standout piece this season”

Whether you go aviator, biker or bomber, a jacket will be your hardest working standout piece this season. Hitting that sweet spot between a jacket with attitude and timeless elegance, you’ll get even more mileage from this must-have by pairing it with a diaphanous dress when the spring collections drop.

The trophy top

It’s no secret the contrast of brown against black is never bland, with that luxe look lending newness to anything you wear it with. Especially when you look forward to wearing a silky ruffle blouse, sexy sheer shirt or sequin T, the beauty of brown is that it makes everything look bang up to date.

The trendy trousers

Looking to break boundaries? Why wear black leather leggings or trousers when you can nail the quiet luxury trend in the same frame… top your brown bottoms with rich earthy tones or cosy caramel knit to look effortlessly cool.

The dapper dress

Head-to-toe is the way to go for a polished, sophisticated look. Dresses and two-pieces in rich chocolates and mocha, belted and accessorised with tonal hues, a maxi bag or clutch (both trending for S/S 24) looks chic and effortless. Furthermore, designers are playing with texture, such as ribbed wool with leather, faux fur embellishment and sweater dresses made from sweatshirt fleece for a contemporary twist on this beloved basic.

Create a bespoke looking wine cellar, room or wall …. without the bespoke price tag

Great news for wine lovers who yearn for a Spiral Cellars designed wine room but who perhaps don’t have the budget such a top-end luxury requires. With the launch of their new, Ready to Cellar Collection, Spiral Cellars are offering customers the means of creating statement wine storage, but without breaking the bank.

The Ready to Cellar Collection by Spiral Cellars, is an exclusive range of some of the same exquisitely designed bottle display and storage components they use in their custom-designed wine rooms, now available to purchase by private clients and trade professionals for use in their own independent cellaring projects.

The Collection offers customers three different styles of wine display, making it the ideal option for those looking for a ‘kit product’ with which to design and build their own personalised wine room or wine wall. And because all pieces tesselate together, customers can use one, two or even three styles within the same project – it’s all down to personal preference.

Whether looking to create a capacity wine room, a statement suspended wine column, or simply seeking a means of displaying a handful of bottles on a wall, customers can select from the wide range of kit style pieces to create their own wine space, exactly as

they want it. And with all pieces available in a variety of finishes and sizes, there is plenty or scope to create truly personalised wine storage.

Included within the range are:

Peg Panels

Bottles rest on two pegs securely attached to a panel board, with either labels or corks facing outward. Both the boards and the attached pegs come in different finishes, materials and sizes to allow for a customised look and storage capacity.

Suspended Bottle Cradles

Bottles are individually rested on metal cradles suspended between floor to ceiling suspension cradles, as if ‘floating’ in mid-air.

Display Pegs

And for those who are crafting a wine room out of their own joinery materials, it’s possible to purchase display pegs as individual items for use in a project .

Lindi Reynolds & Co.

This Fernshaw Mansions Pied-a-terre, set within a Victorian Mansion block in the heart of Chelsea, London, was lovingly renovated and restored for a family of four. It had been remodelled a few times over the years, with each new owner adding a layer of their own; resulting in a hodgepodge collection of rooms and spaces.

Lindi Reynolds & Co restored it sympathetically, taking it right back to its bones and then with remedial work to all walls, and by reclaiming original ceiling heights and features, re-instated the Victorian character of the home. This entailed a challenging electrical re-wire of the property, the copying of existing cornice and refitting of it where absent and some structural wall maintenance. Once a fresh canvass had been achieved the team at Lindi Reynolds and Co. furthered the design package, ensuring that all storage requirements and furniture placements would work sympathetically with the new layouts. Through a full renovation there wasn’t a single surface left unaltered by the team.

The clients brief was to restore the original character whilst bringing it up to date sympathetically; to achieve a haven of quiet yet inspired calm for a modern, progressive family.

“Every step of the way, this award-winning architectural interior design company added value as they went”

The primary design objective was to introduce a high degree of visual interest with colour, print, texture, scale and proportion. High value was placed on the importance of craftsmanship and finish. This enabled the designing and making of bespoke items of furniture, best seen in the dining room. Made to the highest standards in craftsmanship, the hope is that these exquisite

furniture pieces will be treasured and loved by the next generation.

To help establish a sense of tranquility, Belgian linen cloth was fitted to the reception rooms and passages. With its sound absorbing qualities, this product helps to achieve a calm space which is also rich and refined in character and soft on the eye.

One of the challenges was that the bedrooms were relatively small in footprint and passageways narrow. Through clever design and use of bespoke cabinetry and furniture, however, the spaces have been granted a greater sense of space and functionality.

EVERY STEP OF THE WAY, THIS AWARD-WINNING ARCHITECTURAL INTERIOR DESIGN COMPANY ADDED VALUE AS THEY WENT, ENABLING A JOYFUL, HASSLE FREE PROJECT EXPERIENCE FROM BEGINNING TO END.

A LUXURIOUS BESPOKE DRESSING ROOM FIT FOR A FASHIONISTA

With an extensive wardrobe of beautiful clothing, shoes and an ever-growing collection of handbags, influencer and entrepreneur Tara Maynard approached John Lewis of Hungerford to design a beautiful, practical and luxurious dressing room for her Victorian home. Tara had a vision for the space and we created the concept to fit her needs and lifestyle.

“I was after a classic look which would marry beautifully with our period home, something that was timeless and would really stand the test of time. A luxurious canvas which I could add touches of my personality to” explains Tara.

Taking on this brief, Design Director at John Lewis of Hungerford who oversaw the project from design conception to finished room, took Tara through a number of bespoke cabinetry styles before the duo agreed on using the Shaker range in a soft off-white for a crisp, classic look.

From a practical point of view, it was essential that the dressing room featured multiple wardrobes to accommodate Tara’s extensive collection of stunning clothes. Offering a full bespoke design service means the John Lewis of Hungerford cabinetry could be tailored exactly to Tara’s needs so the internal parts of the wardrobes were configured with hanging rails, shelves and drawers meaning there was space to store everything from dresses and jumpers to bags and shoes.

‘It was important to Tara that the room didn’t feel like wall-to-wall wardrobes’ explains Rebecca. ‘So I was mindful when designing the space and we decided to incorporate open-shelving to break up the solid cabinetry and also provide the perfect place to display Tara’s impressive collection of handbags’.

Meticulously planned, the cabinetry has been designed to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The window seat beneath the

original sash windows doesn’t just offer a place to sit and enjoy the view but also features handy drawers to store shoes so they are easily accessible while being neatly hidden away.

Tara also requested the cabinetry be accented with a myriad of mirrors, essential for any dressing room, the mirrored cabinet doors have been used alongside solid cabinet doors and as well as being practical, increase the feeling of light and space in the room.

All of the cabinetry has been accented with decadent goldware from Buster + Punch which works beautifully with the oversized statement ceiling light and the washed wood herringbone floor to create a space which oozes quiet luxury.

The finished look features an oversized ottoman for Tara to relax on when planning the day’s outfit and catch-up on work while getting ready and a stunning feathered-faux palm tree to add an extra touch of luxurious fun to the scheme.

“I am so thrilled with the space”, Tara comments on the finished room, ‘it’s the perfect haven and has married practicality with a timeless aesthetic which fits the rest of the house beautifully’. john-lewis.co.uk

REALISE THE POTENTIAL OF YOUR OUTDOOR SPACES

“Any outdoor space can be made special. Any outdoor space can be made ‘green’”, says Luke Richards, Owner-Director of Terra Firma Landscapes, a company that has been transforming London’s gardens for almost 40 years. “We can transform spaces as small as a window box or as large as a football pitch, and beyond! Pocket parks or suburban and city gardens can all provide their owners with a relaxing refuge and an enticing escape.

We understand the unique constraints and challenges of smaller spaces and have a wealth of solutions, including creating terracing, recesses, and sunken areas. These sculpt the illusion of more space through height, depth, and a varied perspective.

“We can transform spaces as small as a window box or as large as a football pitch, and beyond!”

Then we can add flowers and shrubs for contrast, colour and texture. This approach works just as well for commercial premises if they have borders, lawns, car parks or other spaces ready to be transformed. If you own a business, why not enhance your local area and help your staff and passers-by to see and enjoy a new oasis instead of bare tarmac or plain grass?

“Admittedly, we have never been called out to plant up a single window box, but perhaps we might! Our pleasure comes from our ability to unlock the potential of any outdoor space and seeing the reaction of our clients, as they understand the joy that transformation can give them.

“To take another example, people love a ‘wow factor’, having something special to them that feels unique and makes them stand

out. Outdoor spaces such as gardens can have a ‘wow factor’ as much as any evening dress, well-tailored suit, or bespoke artwork. One striking example is Victorian tiling. Known as renowned builders and engineers, the Victorians created long-lasting, beautifully patterned and coloured tiling installations that made many homes memorable. Today, we honour their craft as it lives and breathes in the capable hands of our craftsmen who are specialists in the design and fitting of Victorian floor tiles and contemporary geometric designs. We have many years of experience in the repair and care of traditional Victorian black and white path tiles and in the myriad of Victorian mosaic tile schemes.”

Terra Firma Landscapes offer a full Victorian tiling design, installation, and restoration service with our supply partner, London Mosaic. They can source new and reclaimed tiles, including architectural tiles, encaustic tiles (where the pattern is inlaid into the tile), geometric tiles, heritage tiles and micro mosaic tiles, along with additional period accessories such as daisy grates, path edging, steps and York stone paving. They also provide contemporary options such as porcelain paving.

MAKE YOUR HOME REALLY WELCOME YOU - WITH AUTOMATION

We all like to visit a welcoming home. One with friendly people, that is clean, safe, well-lit, warm, and where everything has been done to make us feel comfortable.

In the past, having our own homes ready to welcome us hasn’t been possible. Basic systems enabled to have heating come on at set times. Lights could be left on – but they look odd and waste electricity in the daytime. Turning an oven on to cook a meal was another option, but if your timing got away from you, you would return to a cooked, cooled, and drying feast.

Times have changed! Now there are apps on mobile phones that can automatically or at a command turn on or off lighting, heating, cooker, music, and even hot tubs! Such precise, remote, programmable controls have further benefits. Less power is wasted when homes aren’t in use, the appearance of occupancy can be created to deter theft, and if you have guests coming, preparations can be made when you are not at home.

David and Amanda Taylor are the husband-and-wife team at the heart of Focus AV, a custom install company with many years of experience in installing home automation systems and audio-visual services.

Amanda says, “We have been providing home automation services for years, installing systems that are right for our clients and their lifestyles. We had a lovely testimonial from Mr & Mrs C from Canford Cliffs which nicely sums up the way we work. They said, “A great part of David’s service is the way he works with us to set up the operating of the property exactly as we would like.”

Automation is becoming ever more intuitive. David says, “We supply controllers that sit alongside other brands and seamlessly bring them into one simple, easy-to-use interface. This offers our clients ease of use, rather than having to juggle lots of remotes, apps, or other controllers. We can easily remotely diagnose any issues and offer support a lot of the time without the need to make home visits, saving our clients time and money.”

“A custom install company with many years of experience in installing home automation systems and audio-visual services”

Focus AV provides a comprehensive home automation service, from wall-hanging televisions through to supplying, installing, and setting up full home control systems covering lighting, music, TV, heating, and security.

Marvel at the mosaics in new MELVILLE COLLECTION

Colour and pattern combine in the latest floor tile collection from independent tile specialists Porcelain Superstore.

Melville is a Victorianinspired design that will inject period charm wherever it is used. Available in four colourways – blue, grey, red and white – they feature a striking geometric design that will create a stunning mosaic effect.

And while they might channel classic Victorian charm, these contemporary beauties are in fact made out of porcelain, ensuring they are perfect for use in high-traffic areas such as the entrance hall and kitchen.

What’s more, they can be used outside to add a stately finish to pathways and porches.

“Passionate about porcelain, they scour Europe and beyond for their curated collections”

Abbas Youssefi, Director of Porcelain Superstore, said: “These tiles are packed with character and ideal for those who want to inject a timeless touch into their home.

“These are tiles packed with style and they have the substance to stand up to everything modern living can throw at them.”

About Porcelain Superstore

Independent and family-run, the brothers behind Porcelain Superstore might have been brought up in the tile industry, but they

aren’t afraid of shaking it up.

Passionate about porcelain, they scour Europe and beyond for their curated collections, which are handpicked from only the most respected tile factories.

Only the best-looking and top-quality tiles make it to their warehouse where bright, vibrant geometrics sit alongside more traditional large format tiles to offer customers the widest choice of quality porcelain tiles.

Throw in exceptional customer service and five-year guarantees on all tiles and it’s easy to see why Porcelain Superstore are not afraid of breaking the mould.

URBAN EDITIONS - MODERN, MINIMALIST FURNITURE

Urban Editions presents a collection of high-quality, customisable furniture with a minimalist, mid-century or contemporary aesthetic designed and made in the UK using sustainable hardwoods.

Not far from the Severn Estuary in Somerset a team of expert joiners and crafts people are building our TV stands and cabinets. The oak may come from Europe, the walnut from America and the iroko from Africa, but the real value is added in the UK where we cut, sand, join and finish the final products.

The quality is in the hardwoods we use, the smooth finish and the natural grain patterns are beautiful, while the simple, minimalist but functional design gives a contemporary feel to any room.

The range includes TV stands, coffee tables, console tables, desks and a unique selection of cabinets for the music enthusiast with a vinyl

record collection or Hi-Fi equipment, although these may equally double as a sideboard.

A TV stand is not just a piece of furniture; it’s an integral part of your entertainment set-up and something used and seen every day. While its primary purpose is to support your television, a welldesigned TV unit can greatly enhance your viewing experience. In recent years, the trend of extra-wide TV stands has gained popularity, and for good reason.

Gone are the days of small, boxy televisions. Today, large and sleek TVs have become the norm. If you’re an avid movie buff or a sports enthusiast, you likely own a large-screen TV that demands attention. A 2m extra wide TV stand offers the ideal solution by accommodating these larger screens. With its generous width, it provides ample space for your TV to sit comfortably and securely without looking like it dwarfs the unit that it sits on.

The term ‘mid-century modern’ has a broad reach in design terms. Spanning decades of the twentieth-century with a global influence, it established an enduring benchmark in the design industry which continues to inspire to this day, and its popularity shows no sign of abating.

The understated lines of our collection of minimalist, solid wood furniture are directly influenced by the mid-century modern movement.

INDOOR OR OUTDOOR POOL?

If you are dreaming of having your own swimming pool, decide why you want a pool, how it will be used, by whom and whether you want to swim every day.

An indoor pool can be used all year round, although if you prefer an outdoor pool, you can extend its use by installing an attractive pool enclosure so you can swim during the winter.

Indoor pools offer complete climate control, which makes it easy to maintain a comfortable pool temperature no matter the time of year. Garden pools are ideal if you love to be outdoors and want to create an oasis for entertaining and relaxing away from the house.

All pools need space for the plant room equipment, so do note that the space for an indoor pool plant room must be larger than an outdoor one because it must accommodate the ventilation unit.

Building a standalone outdoor pool is much faster, around three months and if the garden is easily accessible, there will be little disruption to your home and routine.

Running costs for outdoor pools are generally lower than for indoor pools because they are closed during the winter and require fewer services when closed. It is advisable to budget for professional servicing on either type of pool once a week or fortnightly to keep the pool in excellent condition.

Building an outdoor pool is less expensive than an indoor one because you do not need to install a ventilation unit which is essential for an indoor pool.

A new indoor pool tends to be built as part of a bigger building project, either a new build property or a major refurbishment of an existing residence. Typically, an indoor pool installation within a new build or home refurbishment will take 12 to 18 months to complete. Usually, a major contractor oversees the entire project. The pool construction will be just one element of the overall build process, so it will take longer to complete than a discrete installation because the pool contractor must work around other phases of the project.

The choice between indoor and outdoor pools should be based on factors such as your budget, property situation, personal preferences, and intended use. Once you have decided, hire a reputable pool contractor, and work closely to create your dream pool.
