Originally an oyster warehouse founded by John Scott in 1851, Scott’s moved to its current location on Mount Street in 1968, becoming one of the most glamorous destinations in the capital. Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, was often seen at Scott’s in the 50s and 60s and it was reportedly here that he discovered the dry martini ‘shaken not stirred’.Inautumn 2022, Scott’s will be opening a second location in the heart of Richmond mooring up on the bank of the River Thames. Residing on Whittaker Avenue, the riverside restaurant will span across two floors; the lower with an impressive crustacean bar serving oysters, wine, Champagne and cocktails, as well as the upstairs with its central bar. Every Thursday to Saturday there will be a live DJ and music for guests to enjoy into the evening. A 32-cover terrace will offer outstanding views and the perfect backdrop for year-round al fresco dining. Highlights include the Cohiba Siglo VI Gran Reserva, one of the finest post-embargo cigars on the market, and Montecristo Sublimes – a highly sought-after, velvety-smooth smoke. Lajca and his team of Cigar Sommeliers will advise on helping to build personal collections and source bespoke requests.

An outstanding feature is the Swiss extraction system, which through the floor and ceiling, silently and constantly cleans the air to stop the space getting too smoky. While Carrara and monochrome marbles will always have a place at the table, this year’s Salone del Mobile – Milan’s iconic furniture fair which shows us what the most modern of homes will be wearing – said one thing: we’re ready to ramp our rock up a notch. If we’ve learned anything in the past few years, it’s that our homes are places for self-expression and experimentation as well as retreat and sanctuary, and the modern interior is both exciting and full of life as well as somewhere to escape and unwind in.
The Salone presentations echoed these dual desires – materials were natural, sustainable and earth-friendly, channelling the organic as well as exaggerating and playing with it. Colours were based around nature but not afraid to go bright, combining pops of pigment and energy with the tactile and the organic.
That’ll be Carrara marble, a stone that has been locked into the contemporary design lover’s vocabulary since the elegantly veined rock fully entered our consciences in 1956 with the launch of Eero Saarinen’s iconic Tulip table for Knoll. In the almost 70 years since, Carrara and other white-based stones have held a grasp on the interiors world, holding the top spot as the to-go shade when opulence, timelessness and style were called for.
As we step away from white-and-grey marble, we also step away from marble itself and open our minds to the allure of other stones.
