DAILY RE-OPENING AT KNEBWORTH HOUSE

The romantic exterior of Knebworth House with its turrets, domes and gargoyles silhouetted against the sky does little to prepare the visitor for what to expect inside. The House has stood for many years longer than the Victorian decoration suggests; the stucco hides from view a red brick house dating back to the Tudor times. The Gardens at Knebworth are delightful throughout the season. The 28-acre formal gardens include a maze, colourful borders, fine trees and a wilderness area with an exciting Dinosaur Trail.

The Cotswold Company now open in Harpenden

Tell us about The Cotswold Company’s new Harpenden store, and what residents can expect to find?

Opening a store in Harpenden is such a wonderful opportunity; it feels like a natural fit for The Cotswold Company, and we loved the fact that this vibrant and charming commuter town is surrounded by beautiful green spaces. Spanning over 3,500 sq ft, the store has allowed us to curate some of our best-selling and much-loved furniture collections—from Chester, with its simple Shakerstyle aesthetic in a range of beautiful paint finishes, to Elkstone, featuring antique-inspired shapes crafted from stunning oak.

The store showcases several room sets, allowing customers to experience the products as if they were in their own homes. In addition to beautiful bedroom and living room sets, a kitchen area will showcase our freestanding furniture pieces, including larders, kitchen islands and utility storage.

Customers will also find a fully integrated Upholstery Hub, complete with full-length fabric options, sofa cards, and swatches, allowing customers to take samples home and feel confident in their choices. To complete the experience, fireplaces, feature walls, and other

decorative statements are on display, offering design inspiration for everyone—from seasoned interior enthusiasts to those just starting their decorating journey.

The Cotswold Company is renowned for crafting well-made, long-lasting furniture that truly makes a house a home. How does this commitment to quality and durability reflect The Cotswold Company’s approach, and why is it such a vital part of your brand identity? It’s everything we stand for when we design and develop all our products. We are passionate about homewares and furniture that lasts and stands the test of time – not just from a quality perspective (all our furniture comes with a 15-year structural guarantee) but also from a style perspective. We want our customers to love our products and cherish them for a lifetime. We put a lot of effort into the details – like our paint finishes, the quality of our handles and the raw materials that go into all our products.

The Cotswold Company offers a wide range of furniture for the bedroom, living room, dining room, nursery, and kitchen as well as

a large upholstery collection. Where are these products designed and made?

All of our products are designed by our inhouse team at The Cotswold Company. We are passionate about our products and our designs blend classic English influences with updated shapes for modern living; consistently well-made and designed to last. We source our products from around the world including the UK, Europe and Asia. For example, our upholstery is made by master craftsmen in Long Eaton and our bed linen is hand-made in Portugal from the finest yarns.

Can you share more about The Cotswold Company’s commitment to sustainability and how it influences your approach to design, sourcing, and production?

We are so pleased to share that The Cotswold Company is now B Corp Certified—a significant

milestone in our ongoing commitment to reducing our environmental impact, which has always been at the heart of what we do. Our collections are crafted from responsibly sourced wood, and over the past year, we have successfully removed 97% of polystyrene from our packaging.

To date, we have planted 85,000 trees, and we remain committed to planting more trees than we use, ensuring that we give back to the environment that continues to inspire us.

Looking ahead to 2025, we have set ourselves further sustainability goals and will be delivering dedicated training to all our staff.

With the arrival of spring, many people are looking to refresh their homes for the year ahead. How does The Cotswold Company support this seasonal shift, and what products or tips would you recommend?

Storage and organisation are key to creating a practical home, and The Cotswold Company has plenty to offer! From stylish freestanding media units to keep sitting rooms and snugs tidy, to shoe storage solutions for clutter-free hallways and practical cabinets to help organise busy utility spaces.

We’re also seeing more customers exploring freestanding furniture for their kitchens. Our kitchen larders and islands provide both practical storage and extra preparation space while giving a kitchen a fresh new look. Plus, they can be taken with you when you move—something that’s becoming an increasingly important consideration for many of our customers.

TRING BREWERY PARTNERS WITH THE REPAIR SHED IN 2025

Tring Brewery have announced The Repair Shed as their ‘Charity of Choice’ for 2025.

The Repair Shed is a charity programme which brings local, older men together to combat social isolation, offering them welcoming sheds to make and mend, forming bonds with like-minded ‘Shedders’. Tring Brewery will produce monthly special beers to raise awareness for The Repair Shed and plans to host unique fundraising events throughout the year. Each monthly beer will enjoy namesake and imagery inspired by hardware and ‘elbow grease’, finished with The Repair Shed’s official logo.

looking forward to working with The Repair Shed. ‘The Shedders’ are a community of hardworking and friendly local men, many with a taste for quality ale.

As a proud local brewer, we recognise value in social community settings, whether that be the warmth of a quaint village pub or the well-worn workbench of a men’s shed. I’m sure we can help raise funds and awareness for such a genuine initiate!” Twelve brand new beers will be brewed by Tring Brewery to raise awareness for The Repair Shed, starting with ‘Chisel & Chip’ Golden Ale launched in January. Each brew will be ‘shed themed ‘in name and design. Tony Mackinder, The Repair Shed Officer, shares his excitement about partnering with Jared and the team at the brewery:

Founded in 2015, The Repair Shed are excited to celebrate 10 years of charitable make-do-and-mend efforts in 2025.

Launched in 2015, The Repair Shed is just one arm of Community Action Dacorum, a local charity who’s tenets are “Community | Wellbeing | Employability”. Using the Repair Shed’s venues, which are situated in Hemel Hempstead, Northchurch, Kings Langley and Redbourn, “Shedders” can work on personal projects alongside community builds and refurbishments. Amongst other things, these include eco-friendly ‘bug hotels’, and planters which adorn local towns centres.

Shedders are also given time to work on income generation projects on behalf of the charity, although additional fundraising opportunities are vital for the longevity of the sheds.

The Repair Shed offers tools, materials and a warm welcome to dozens of older men, who have access to sheds in Hemel Hempstead, Kings Langley, Northchurch and Redbourn. Alongside special beer releases, Tring Brewery will raise funds through bi-annual members’ evenings, their annual ToadFest beer festival, an exciting online raffle and further ventures yet to be revealed. Jared Ward, communications at Tring Brewery, is excited to kickstart the project. Jared comments:

“The team at Tring Brewery are very much

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Jared and the brewery team to promote and support The Repair Shed, especially as we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of this impactful project.”

Simon Aulton, Chief Executive at Community Action Dacorum said: “The Repair Sheds make a massive difference to the lives of our Shedders, reducing loneliness and isolation across the borough. We are immensely grateful to Tring Brewery for their support, which will allow us to help more people locally.”

The brewery’s collaborative monthly ales will be available on draught from local pubs and their Dunsley Farm brewery shop. Details for brewery members’ nights, ToadFest, and further activities will be announced via Tring Brewery social media and newsletter channels throughout the year.

Here’s to a year of beer, in the name of The Repair Shed and Community Action Dacorum; cheers!

IT’S THE MONOPOLY: ST ALBANS EDITION’S ‘BIG REVEAL’

Abrand-new official MONOPOLY: St Albans Edition - featuring the great and good of the city - is now available in shops.

The game - which sees bespoke property spaces and cards - hit the shops on 14th October last year, following a formal launch at The Odyssey Cinema.

When it was announced that St Albans is getting its own version of the world’s most popular board game, the public was invited to send in suggestions for landmarks and organisations to feature in the game. Landing

at the top of the board is St Albans Cathedral. At the other end - ‘Old Kent Road, the game’s most affordable square - is the Roman Theatre. This, say the game’s makers, is on account of it being “so very old”.

“We have been spoilt with choices when putting this MONOPOLY board together,” says Ella Gibbs, Custom Games Executive at Winning Moves UK. “We produce official MONOPOLY games based on places all over the world, including in recent years Palm Beach, Dubai, Phuket and The Hamptons. Now St Albans has joined the world’s MONOPOLY elite!”.

The Mayor of St Albans City and District, Cllr Jamie Day, says: “It is wonderful to see the historic city of St Albans celebrated as an official game of MONOPOLY”.

The MONOPOLY: St Albans Edition is available to purchase at Waterstones and WHSmith - as well as extensively online, including at Booghe. co.uk and Amazon.co.uk.

Dining at The Golden Fleece

The Golden Fleece Country pub and dining rooms is located in the picturesque village of Braughing and is owned and run by Pete and Jess Tatlow.

Bought at auction 15 years ago by the couple, they set about re-establishing to former glory the delapidated 17th century freehouse. It had previously been closed since 2001 when a former owner closed the business after a short reign, trying to get planning consent to change the building into a house – this was refused many times due to continued local opposition.

Pete and Jess were already known in Braughing, and throughout the renovations, friends and locals lent their skills and time to allow a remarkable transformation in only 4 months, with the pub re-opening on the night of the famous Braughing Wheelbarrow race, in July 2010.

It is now the perfect place to enjoy a pint of ale by one of the two log burners in the winter or a glass of chilled wine on the terrace while the children explore the play area in warmer months. It is recommended in many guides, and has won several awards for its food and atmosphere.

You’ll always receive a warm welcome whether you are just dropping by for a drink, enjoying a light lunch, delicious evening meal or celebrating a special occasion. Head Chef Jess and her team strive to keep the a la carte menu fresh and exciting, changing the menu regularly and offering a daily specials board.

“It is now the perfect place to enjoy a pint of ale by one of the two log burners in the winter or a glass of chilled wine on the terrace while the children explore the play area in warmer months”

Their Sundays roasts are ever popular, served between 12 noon to 5pm, with a selection of three meats and vegetarian options also available. The Golden Fleece is well known for catering for coeliac, gluten and dairy free diets. This is something Jess and Pete have championed over their careers. Meals can easily be adapted for other food allergy sufferers as everything is prepared to order. They also offers a separate Vegan/ vegetarian menu available.

All menus, beverages and special events (including The Golden Fleece’s popular Tapas Night on the last Wednesday of the month) can be found on their social media pages and website. goldenfleecebraughing.co.uk, 01920 823555.

THE MICHELIN GUIDE Great Britain & Ireland 2025

The most-eagerly anticipated restaurant awards in the annual calendar have been announced - Michelin has announced its 2025 restaurant selection, with a total of 1,147 restaurants, ranging in style from counter dining to country houses.

NEW THREE MICHELIN STAR RESTAURANT:

Moor Hall, Lancashire - Chef Mark Birchall and his team have continued to hone their craft and have now achieved new levels of excellence. The ingredients, many from the kitchen garden, are outstanding; the chefs’ culinary technique is hugely impressive; and the judgement of flavours, of when to prioritise simplicity and when to add complexity, is exemplary. The Inspectors particularly enjoyed the classically based turbot cooked in brown butter, with seasonal kuri squash and Mylor prawns.

NEW TWO MICHELIN STAR RESTAURANTS:

Humble Chicken, Soho - while Chef-Owner Angelo Sato’s Japanese heritage provides the basis

for this modern, upbeat izakaya, his creative streak ensures the theatrical tasting menu takes on a style all its own. Clever flavour and temperature combinations feature throughout, as do the kitchen’s immense precision and technical skill. Pumping music contributes to a great atmosphere, whilst sake ‘journeys’ are encouraged to add to the experience.

The Ritz Restaurant, St James’s - with its stunning Louis XVI decoration, there’s a flamboyancy in the delivery of the dishes that

Top: Moor Hall Restaurant; Above: Humble Chicken Below: The Ritz Restaurant

lives up to the surroundings. Equally impressive is the cooking itself, displaying balance, refinement and depth of flavour. You need only take one glance at the menu to see that classical French techniques and luxury ingredients both play a big role in proceedings. The sharing ‘Arts de la Table’ dishes allow the impeccable service team to keep the theatre of the gueridon trolley alive.

Hide & Fox, Saltwood - outside of London, near the Kent coast, duo Allister Barsby and Alice Bussi have added another chapter to their impressive story, earning Two Stars for neighbourhood restaurant Hide & Fox. Allister and the team’s cooking is packed full of delicious produce, cooked with due respect to deliver dishes that succeed on every level. The service is equally endearing, helping to create an experience that is a true delight.

NEW ONE MICHELIN STAR RESTAURANTS INCLUDE:

OMA, London SE1 - on the edge of Borough Market, OMA has become The Guide’s first Greek restaurant to be awarded a Star in the UK and Ireland – thanks to lip-smackingly delicious dishes from Chef Jorge Paredes. This is the spot that the capital’s Hellenic food enthusiasts have been crying out for, with utterly delicious sharing dishes. The covered terrace overlooks Borough Market, the pacing from the kitchen is spot on and the list of coastal wines is great too.

AngloThai, Marylebone - ‘Rooted in Thailand, Uniquely British’ is the tagline of this joyfully run restaurant from John and Desiree Chantarasak – John is half-Thai, half-British, a duality that informs his cuisine. The exemplary ingredients are sourced from across the UK, including from Desiree’s family’s farm. You can certainly expect more than British ingredients simply married with Thai flavours.

DOSA, Mandarin Oriental Mayfair - the restaurant Korean food enthusiasts have been waiting for. Served at a marble counter in the Two-Key Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, Jihun Kim’s cooking is luxurious and supremely skilful. It’s all executed with utmost skill and the mostly British produce is of superb quality. The chefs and wellversed service teamwork in impressive harmony and have a real desire for you to understand the cuisine, but most importantly to enjoy it.

Plates London, Hoxton - the first fully plant-

based restaurant in the UK and Ireland to receive a MICHELIN Star. There’s an appropriately earthy, natural vibe to this elegant restaurant dedicated to promoting plant-based cuisine. Chef Kirk Haworth, who founded Plates with his sister Keeley – brings his strong classical technique to bear on inventive and inviting vegan dishes that give vegetables the respect they deserve.

Starling, Esher - the first solo project of Nick Beardshaw – who established his reputation working with Tom Kerridge – it’s a simple neighbourhood operation, but one with undoubtedly delicious food. While the menu consists of the kind of seemingly straightforward dishes that are tricky to pull off yet so easy to eat. Nick’s signature dish of Orkney scallop with Thai green curry sauce is a prime example, the technical skill and balance of flavours shining through.

Together with the restaurants which have maintained their distinction from last year, there are total of 181 One-MICHELIN-Star restaurants in the 2025 MICHELIN Guide selection for Great Britain & Ireland.

Banksy’s Crude Oil (Vettriano)

Banksy work owned by Blink-182 star Mark Hoppus predicted to sell for up to £5m. By Casey Cooper-Fiske

A Banksy painting owned by Blink-182 star Mark Hoppus is to go to auction where it is estimated to fetch between £3 million and £5 million.

Named Crude Oil (Vettriano), the painting has hung in the 52-year-old bass player’s homes in London and Los Angeles after he acquired it with his wife Skye Everly in 2011.

He said: “We loved this painting since the moment we saw it. Unmistakably Banksy, but different.

“We bought it because we loved it. It’s borne witness to our family over these past dozen years. It hung over the table in London where we ate breakfast and our son did his homework. It hung in our living room in Los Angeles.

“It’s seen laughter and tears and parties and arguments. Our son has grown up in front of it.

“This painting has meant so much to us and been such an amazing part of our lives, and now I’m excited for it to be out there in the world, seen by as many as possible. Go get ‘em, godspeed.”

Hoppus will use the proceeds from the sale to expand the family’s art collection by buying works by upcoming artists, while a portion of the funds will go to charities including the California Fire Foundation, which helps people impacted by wildfires around LA.

The singer added: “Coming back to punk rock, one aspect of the community I always hold dear is, if you get lucky enough to gain success, you bring your friends with you.

“Larger bands bring smaller bands on tour. We support one another from within.

“I want to take some of the money from the sale of this painting and use it to buy works from younger, upcoming artists.

“We were lucky enough to find Crude Oil (Vettriano) in our lives, and it’ll help us support

more art and artists. I want to be a f****** Medici.”

The sale will also benefit Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and its Child Life Programme, and Cedars Sinai Haematology Oncology Research.

Hoppus was diagnosed with stage four diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in June 2021, but announced he was free of cancer in September that year after months of chemotherapy.

The Banksy work will headline Sotheby’s Modern And Contemporary Evening Auction on March 4 in London, and will go on display at Sotheby’s New York from February 18 to 20, before heading to London for the Sotheby’s preview exhibition from February 26 to the sale day.

The painting, which Hoppus said brought “joy and anger, and hope and scepticism”, was first exhibited in Banksy’s 2005 exhibition Crude Oils: A Gallery Of Re-Mixed Masterpieces, Vandalism And Vermin.

It is a reimagining of Jack Vettriano’s The Singing Butler, which was painted in 1992, to tackle environmental issues, pollution and capitalism, according to Sotheby’s experts.

The sale comes after Banksy’s Piranhas work was donated to the new London Museum site, which will open in Smithfield next year.

The graffitied police sentry box made headlines last summer when it appeared as part of the street artist’s animal-themed collection in the capital, which concluded with a gorilla appearing to lift up a shutter on the entrance to London Zoo.

Blink-182, formed in 1992 by Hoppus, guitarist and vocalist Tom DeLonge and drummer Travis Barker, came to define the pop punk genre, with hits such as What’s My Age Again? and All The Small Things.

Hoppus will publish his memoir Fahrenheit-182 in April, detailing his life and career with the group.

THE POWER OF SPORT

Nurturing Wellbeing and Achieving Academic Success

At Aldwickbury School, sport is a key part of our holistic education. Through daily physical activity, children build confidence, resilience and a love for sport, all of which enhance their happiness, mental health and academic success. When pupils are engaged in sport, they become more successful learners.

Research proves regular physical activity boosts concentration, memory and problem-solving skills - key components for academic success. Sport also supports mental health by reducing stress and anxiety while enhancing mood. Whether it’s the excitement of scoring a goal, the perseverance to beat a personal best, or working together as part of a team, these experiences nurture both mental resilience and life skills, equipping pupils for academic challenges in the classroom.

At Aldwickbury, there’s a sport for everyone, from traditional games to badminton, climbing,

fencing, gymnastics and triathlon. Our dedicated staff ignite a passion in our pupils, helping them find an activity they love.

This September, we’re excited for girls to join us in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, to benefit from our outstanding facilities and holistic education delivered by specialist teachers.

Sport is more than just a game, it’s a foundation for a healthy, happy and successful future, both in and outside the classroom.

REFLECTIONS AND ASPIRATIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR at St Margaret’s School

Throughout 2024, life at St Margaret’s has continued to focus on the importance of community, compassion and enrichment and during the course of the last year we have increased our partnerships within the local community. Our goal is to inspire and challenge pupils from across our wider community and we hope to repeat our success this year. St Margaret’s is particularly passionate about giving children opportunities to problem solve and we are keen to continue with hosting events that encourage pupils to work together in a focused way and to come up with thoughtful solutions to real-word problems. It has also been wonderful to welcome more children into our school from inside the local community during 2024.

The last year has also been an exciting year in sports. Earlier in 2024 we hosted the Hertfordshire Primary Cross-Country Championships in association with HSAA (Hertfordshire Schools Athletics Association) at our campus in Bushey. It is the first time the school has hosted the prestigious sporting event, which is the main primary school county race in the region, also acting as a trial race for top athletes to try out to represent the county at the national championships. The event, which saw 438 Year 5 and Year 6 pupils compete and finish the course, involved four races, all spanning one mile in length. A total of 69 schools from across Hertfordshire took part in the races, including Aldenham School, Codicote, Beechwood Park, Berkhamsted Prep and many more. In addition, we hosted our first High

Performance Programme (HPP) event for our elite young athletes in the summer of 2024 as part of our commitment to nurturing and mentoring sporting talent while giving children opportunities to meet role models from the sporting world. With considerable investment in our arts facilities and the addition of dance this academic year, pupils have been given multiple opportunities to join troupes and participate in high level competitions across the country. Earlier in 2024, we hosted an incredible Expressive Arts Showcase for local parents at the Radlett Centre. The event was a wonderful opportunity for local Herts pupils to perform in front of a live audience and showcase their amazing creative talents. We are excited about 2025 as we continue to invest heavily in our wellbeing provision at St Margaret’s to ensure that every child is given the right support to thrive and learn. We will also continue to boost our co-curricular offering with many new activities as we move into 2025. Finally, St Margaret’s is also celebrating five years as a co-educational school in January 2025 with boys currently making up 39% of the whole school. stmargarets-school.org.uk

Oxona Health FOCUS: ACNE

WHAT CAUSES ACNE?

Acne arises from a combination of factors that interact with one another. Firstly, the activity of sebaceous (grease) glands plays a crucial role. When these glands become active during the teenage years, they produce significantly more sebum, leading to clogged pores.

Secondly, a common skin bacterium that thrives in greasy environments, Cutibacterium Acnes, triggers the skin’s immune system to respond by forming pus-filled spots.

The hormonal fluctuations in girls also contribute to premenstrual worsening of acne.

Other contributing factors include a genetic predisposition, as acne often runs in families. Finally, some medications can induce acne. For instance, the progesterone-only contraceptive pill (the mini pill) and some combined oral contraceptives can exacerbate acne.

MYTH BUSTING

Diet rarely contributes to acne. While maintaining a healthy, balanced diet is important, evidence remains weak regarding the impact of chocolate, dairy, refined sugars, and processed foods on acne. However, some studies have shown a link between stress and acne, so managing stress levels may be beneficial.

“Some

studies have shown a link between stress and acne, so managing stress levels may be beneficial”

Another common misconception is that aggressively treating the skin with harsh products will alleviate acne. However, this approach can backfire, as the skin may respond by producing more sebum, worsening the condition. It is essential to treat the skin gently and avoid excessive use of scrubs and harsh over-the-counter treatments.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF ACNE LESIONS

There are various types of acne lesions, the most common being whiteheads and blackheads. Whiteheads occur when hair follicles become clogged and remain closed at the skin’s surface. Conversely, blackheads are open to the skin’s surface, and their contents oxidize, giving them a black appearance.

If whiteheads become inflamed, they turn into papules, and when inflammation and pus increase, they become pustules. As these lesions combine and grow larger, they form nodules and cysts.

TREATMENTS

There is a wide range of topical treatments available over the counter that can effectively manage acne. These include topical niacinamide, azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and retinols. Maintaining a good skincare routine can also

help prevent the need for prescribed medications in some cases. Gentle cleansers and oil-free moisturizers are essential. Expensive does not necessarily mean better—cost-effective products such as CeraVe Blemish Control Cleanser, The INKEY List Salicylic Acid Cleanser, and La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo+M Anti-Breakout Corrective Gel Moisturizer are excellent choices.

For more severe acne, prescription treatments are required. In straightforward cases, topical combination products can be highly effective. Oral antibiotics may be added for a period to calm flareups, ideally for no more than a few months. Some brands of the oral combined contraceptive pill can be beneficial for women, and spironolactone is an excellent option in selected cases.

Recently, a combination of red and blue light intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy has shown promise in improving mild to moderate acne. However, this treatment option is not yet widely available.

For very severe or persistent cases, the most effective treatment is isotretinoin (also known as Accutane or Roaccutane). It can only be prescribed by dermatology specialists but can be transformative. Isotretinoin is the only drug known to cure acne rather than just manage symptoms. Contrary to much of the misinformation spread on social media, isotretinoin is a safe and effective

treatment when prescribed correctly. Waiting lists for isotretinoin on the NHS can be over 12 months, leading many patients to seek private treatment. At Oxona, our experienced doctors can start patients on isotretinoin within a week. The Oxona team understand the devasting impact acne can have on young people’s self esteem and happiness. We aim to treat patients swiftly and at a fair price.

Booking an appointment is the first step in a patient’s acne journey. Our helpful reception team are on hand to advise you. Appointments can be booked online, by email or telephone. oxonahealth.co.uk. 01727 620101

2K CRIMPING IS COMING BACK, ACCORDING TO FASHION WEEK RUNWAYS

Chet Lo’s autumn/winter show brought back hair crimping. By Lara Owen

Chet Lo brought back Y2K crimping at London Fashion Week, steering away from the hyper-natural hair trends of the moment, and leaning into style nostalgia.

The Asian-American designer, known for his clashing textural designs, collaborated with celebrity hairstylist Anna Cofone and Authentic Beauty Concept to create a textbook Noughties look.

Cofone combined pin-straight hair with uniform crimps, creating a quintessentially Y2K look for Lo’s autumn/winter 2025 collection.

“The inspiration for today’s look is very much a continuation of patterns and panels,” said Cofone, “we wanted to mimic the patterns in Chet’s clothes, so we’ve got these cool, crimped panels appearing at the back of the model’s hair and on some of the sides.”

As for the products, the goal was to look shiny and slick, so Cofone used Authentic Beauty Concept’s hair balms and glow serums to calm any flyaways and add that Y2K-style shine.

While flat and shiny hairstyles are reminiscent of the early Noughties, crimping also recalls the trends of the Eighties, which have been observed on this season’s runways.

“I think it’s great that it’s got this reference to the Eighties,” says Cofone. “Do I think [crimping] is going to come back? I think people can definitely play with crimps and see what shape they get – for sure.”

The nostalgic crimped hair was the perfect accessory for the low-rise skirts and asymmetric tops that flooded this season’s runway – ushering the return of early 2000s fashion – much to Gen Z’s happiness.

WHY DO PEOPLE FALL IN LOVE WITH FURNITURE?

Harmony and happiness exist in the memories we make, the little things that bring a momentary shine to our lives, and even the objects we find simply aesthetically pleasing. All these joyful morsels of life, crumbled down from our love for the world around us, can be embodied in the furniture we collect when we design our homes to channel the love we have for our safe space.

We’ve asked around regarding matters of the heart and the home, and this is the picture we’ve built as to why design enthusiasts and casual couch chillers alike feel such endearment for their furniture. From decades old dining chairs to icons of our industry, here are 5 reasons that love belongs with our belongings.

SENTIMENTALITY

To quote Lou Reed, “I don’t like nostalgia unless it’s mine.” Your sentimentality is the warmest version of your favourite memories; all yours to treasure and hold dear. Nothing sticks more in the mind than that of the home you grew up in. Owning a chair that recalls emotions of a cherished childhood, or a sofa spent watching shows that gathered the family is a comforting way

to bring the best of your past into the present and create a loving environment.

ERGONOMICS

Life is a journey of deciding what works for you, and objects that ergonomically improve your home experience do exactly that. A piece of furniture that suits your space – slid into its spot with the satisfaction of a Tetris piece – can allow you to lean into a more laidback lifestyle or get deeper into your productive passion projects. Offer yourself room in your rooms and let decades of design research take the trouble off your shoulders. The more harmoniously the furniture fits your needs the more you’ll love it for doing so.

“Life

is a journey of deciding what works for you, and objects that ergonomically improve your home experience do exactly that”

ASPIRATION

Daydreaming, a powerful tool in visualising what you want without already having. Design aficionados like you and I yearn to own a piece of furniture history, an icon of interiors, with that instantly recognisable acclaim that even someone with no interest in design can identify. To look across the room and see a prestigious object and say, “This is a slice of history in my home.” A precious piece with its own story and identity that you’re allowed to wax lyrical about to all who enter.

SHAPE AND COLOUR

Shaping and shading your home is all part of the expressive experience. The tones that match your mood and the shapes that are easiest on your eye are a sure-fire way to make you fall in love with your space. Having a home that matches your aesthetic brings you closer to a true expression of self – a little bit of you in every nook and cranny. As with everything, it’s horses for courses: those with a more reserved approach find minimalism can make them feel more peaceful

and less overwhelmed, while those who enjoy big, bold statements can convey emotions through a collection of colourful objects that characterise them the best. Either way, always making sure your home matches your energy is a vital interior love language.

LONGEVITY

The reverse of nostalgia, these pieces don’t live long in the memory because they, very simply, are not memories. Owning something for so long it becomes a proverbial ‘part of the furniture,’ an irreplaceable part of your home that it wouldn’t feel like home without. This could be the first chair your bought for your apartment, or the unit that has held your TV aloft since pre-Britpop. Holding onto your furniture is environmentally, economically and evocatively important – and it works best when your furniture is bought with quality, craftsmanship, and care for production in mind.

TOP INDOOR POOL CONSIDERATIONS - WITH ORIGIN

Embarking on the journey of building an indoor swimming pool is an exciting decision, but it also comes with many important choices. Attention to detail and precise planning are crucial when designing a successful swimming pool and pool house. With over 40 years of expertise, Origin has the answers to all your questions and will guide you every step of the way, from concept to completion.

Stand-Alone or Pool House Extension?

One of the first decisions is whether to opt for a stand-alone indoor pool house or an extension to your home. This choice will impact everything from design to cost, so it’s essential to consider all factors carefully. Do you want a separate retreat from the main house, a space dedicated to wellness and relaxation? Or is a pool house extension better suited to your lifestyle, offering easy access from the comfort of your home?

There are advantages to both, but one crucial factor is whether you’ll need planning permission. For stand-alone pool houses that fall within permitted development criteria, planning approval is often not required. However, if you’re extending your home to include an indoor pool, planning permission will be needed. Don’t worry though, Origin handles the entire planning process for you. Their extensive experience in navigating planning regulations will save you time and stress.

Do You Need an Architect?

Here’s the good news: you don’t need to employ a separate architect with Origin, as they handle everything. They provide free design sketches and budget proposals as part of their feasibility studies, so you can have complete confidence knowing your dream pool is in skilled hands from the very beginning. While architects are experts in domestic construction, an indoor pool requires specialised knowledge that many architects may not possess. We’ll take your vision, turn it into a practical design and bring it to life using our specialist team of architects and designers.

What Affects Pool Costs?

Size plays a significant role in the cost of your pool. The most popular indoor pool size falls between 8m to 12m, but remember - bigger isn’t always better. If the size of your pool increases, so does the size of the building that houses it. If you’re an avid swimmer, fantastic counter-current swim devices are available that make a smaller pool just as effective. Another consideration is the pool cover, which is a vital investment, as not only does it retain heat and reduce running costs, but it will also provide a safety barrier, which is particularly important in family-friendly pools.

When adding extra features like saunas, changing rooms or even a home gym, it is essential to remember your original motivation. Did you want a peaceful retreat for relaxation, a fitness space or a vibrant social hub for family and friends? Clearly defining your aspirations ensures each element enhances your pool’s overall function and design.

Why Choose Origin?

With Origin, you don’t need to juggle multiple contractors - they do it all. Their team of experts consolidates everything from the start, from pool chamber design and circulation to environmental controls and finishes. Building indoor pools is a specialised field. It’s unlike any other building project and requires a holistic approach, with all the key elements working together from the beginning. That’s where Origin excels. They have all the design and engineering expertise necessary and manage every step of the process, from the initial consultation and design phase to construction and post-completion maintenance, ensuring everything works seamlessly together.

Origin has been crafting luxury pools for over four decades, boasting 75 industry awards and a diverse array of pool projects. Whether you envisage an indoor pool for wellness, fitness or family entertainment, they bring unparalleled expertise and dedication to every undertaking. Spring Revival

Escape into the wilderness in a new spring-inspired design

Family-run wallcovering specialists By Haleys is bringing the outside in this spring, with a new hand-painted mural bursting with biophilic charm.

A modern take on Chinoiserie-style, Ophelia in Zest is packed with colour and brings a 21st century touch to the classic design technique.

The design offers a whimsical escape into nature’s luscious wilderness, capturing the essence of tranquillity with suggestions of a far-off river adorned with vegetation.

What’s more, a sense of mystique and drama exude from opulent shrubs and blossoms, resplendent in vibrant shades of pink, green and blue, at the forefront of the design.

Richard Haley, Creative Director of By Haleys, said: “Ophelia was born from the popular chinoiserie style, but we wanted to dismantle and redefine the conventional stereotypes to unleash a whole new perspective.

“Our interpretation was to have more depth, to be raw and authentic, and to let the beauty of an unpredictable layout mimic the unruly yet graceful nature of overgrown fauna.”

Like all murals from By Haleys, Ophelia in Zest’s starting point was a sketchbook, with the design team bringing their vision to life, one paint stroke at a time.

Ophelia in Zest is available in three finishes: matte uncoated, premier vinyl and grasscloth. Ophelia is also available in two other colourways: Vintage and Pewter.

“The design offers a whimsical escape into nature’s luscious wilderness, capturing the essence of tranquillity with suggestions of a faroff river adorned with vegetation”

By Haleys offers customers the flexibility to choose the exact portion of the mural they desire, ensuring a perfect fit for their space.

Prices start at £48 per m2 and the collection is available now from By Haleys.

OPHELIA IN ZEST

With it’s whimsical charm, Ophelia in Zest captures the essence of tranquillity with suggestions of a far-off river adorned with vegetation, yet still infusing a sense of mystique and drama with its opulent shrubs and blossoms at the forefront. Your walls will sing with opulence with Ophelia, she’s a beauty!
