The ‘modern sofas for all’ mantra means that whatever the size, space or taste, there is something to suit. The Otto Collection comprises a selection of modular units which can be configured to make a cosy corner or expansive cinema room solution, available in two depths and three widths each element can be designed to suit the space perfectly. Classic sofa shapes are made fresh with twists of individuality from the various cushion curations featuring plenty of designer splashes of pattern and colour. Arlo’s look is always timeless and tailored to be unique with finishing touches added such as the choice of stain applied to the hardwood hand sculpted legs, with timber sourced from well managed and protected FSC forests. They have even launched their own range of lacquered button side tables in a palette of shades that match their core colour palette, made locally from the same beautiful timber as these hand-crafted legs.

TRING BREWERY PARTNERS WITH THE REPAIR SHED IN 2025

Tring Brewery have announced The Repair Shed as their ‘Charity of Choice’ for 2025.

The Repair Shed is a charity programme which brings local, older men together to combat social isolation, offering them welcoming sheds to make and mend, forming bonds with like-minded ‘Shedders’. Tring Brewery will produce monthly special beers to raise awareness for The Repair Shed and plans to host unique fundraising events throughout the year. Each monthly beer will enjoy namesake and imagery inspired by hardware and ‘elbow grease’, finished with The Repair Shed’s official logo.

looking forward to working with The Repair Shed. ‘The Shedders’ are a community of hardworking and friendly local men, many with a taste for quality ale.

As a proud local brewer, we recognise value in social community settings, whether that be the warmth of a quaint village pub or the well-worn workbench of a men’s shed. I’m sure we can help raise funds and awareness for such a genuine initiate!” Twelve brand new beers will be brewed by Tring Brewery to raise awareness for The Repair Shed, starting with ‘Chisel & Chip’ Golden Ale launched in January. Each brew will be ‘shed themed ‘in name and design. Tony Mackinder, The Repair Shed Officer, shares his excitement about partnering with Jared and the team at the brewery:

Founded in 2015, The Repair Shed are excited to celebrate 10 years of charitable make-do-and-mend efforts in 2025.

Launched in 2015, The Repair Shed is just one arm of Community Action Dacorum, a local charity who’s tenets are “Community | Wellbeing | Employability”. Using the Repair Shed’s venues, which are situated in Hemel Hempstead, Northchurch, Kings Langley and Redbourn, “Shedders” can work on personal projects alongside community builds and refurbishments. Amongst other things, these include eco-friendly ‘bug hotels’, and planters which adorn local towns centres.

Shedders are also given time to work on income generation projects on behalf of the charity, although additional fundraising opportunities are vital for the longevity of the sheds.

The Repair Shed offers tools, materials and a warm welcome to dozens of older men, who have access to sheds in Hemel Hempstead, Kings Langley, Northchurch and Redbourn. Alongside special beer releases, Tring Brewery will raise funds through bi-annual members’ evenings, their annual ToadFest beer festival, an exciting online raffle and further ventures yet to be revealed. Jared Ward, communications at Tring Brewery, is excited to kickstart the project. Jared comments:

“The team at Tring Brewery are very much

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Jared and the brewery team to promote and support The Repair Shed, especially as we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of this impactful project.”

Simon Aulton, Chief Executive at Community Action Dacorum said: “The Repair Sheds make a massive difference to the lives of our Shedders, reducing loneliness and isolation across the borough. We are immensely grateful to Tring Brewery for their support, which will allow us to help more people locally.”

The brewery’s collaborative monthly ales will be available on draught from local pubs and their Dunsley Farm brewery shop. Details for brewery members’ nights, ToadFest, and further activities will be announced via Tring Brewery social media and newsletter channels throughout the year.

Here’s to a year of beer, in the name of The Repair Shed and Community Action Dacorum; cheers!

BEAM, Hertford

If you’re looking to try something new this year, why not visit BEAM? East Herts’ newest venue opened in August last year following a multi-million pound redevelopment of Hertford’s existing theatre, and aims to enhance the cultural legacy of the district by providing a sustainable space for local residents, as well as for visitors from further afield, to enjoy.

The vibrant and bustling cultural hub, which operates in the heart of Hertford with picturesque views of the River Lea, is housed on the same site as the town’s first cinema – which opened in 1914 – and sits in front of the still-glorious Hertford Castle, where Queen Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood.

All-year round, BEAM offers exciting performances in its 547-seat theatre, first-release films across three state-of-the-art cinema rooms, a new, flexible 151-seat studio theatre, community facilities (including a Changing Place) and a variety of public spaces to work, socialise or just relax in.

Since opening, the venue has welcomed acclaimed comedians, insightful speakers and dazzling performers, and successfully staged its first pantomime over the recent Christmas period.

How to Choose the Perfect Engagement Ring

An engagement ring is more than just a piece of jewellery; it’s a symbol of love, commitment, and the start of a new chapter. With so many options available, selecting the perfect ring can feel overwhelming. While design and personal style play a role, the true value of an engagement ring lies in the quality of its diamond. Here’s what you need to know about choosing the best diamond for your ring and how Baker Brothers can guide you through this once-in-a-lifetime decision.

THE FOUR CS: UNDERSTANDING DIAMOND QUALITY

When choosing a diamond, it’s essential to understand the Four Cs; Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat Weight. These factors determine a diamond’s beauty, brilliance, and overall value.

• Cut: The cut of a diamond is arguably the most important factor, as it affects how well the diamond reflects light. A well-cut diamond will have unmatched brilliance, ensuring your ring sparkles from every angle.

“The cut of a diamond is arguably the most important factor”

• Colour: Diamonds range in colour from completely colourless to shades of yellow or brown. The least amount of colour in a diamond makes it rarer and more valuable. The highestquality diamonds are graded D (completely colourless) and create a stunning, icy-white appearance.

allowing you to create a one-of-a-kind ring tailored to your partner’s style. Whether you’re looking for a classic solitaire, a dazzling halo setting, or something truly unique, our team will work with you to bring your vision to life.

THE PERFECT RING FOR A LIFETIME OF LOVE

• Clarity: Clarity refers to the presence of internal or external inclusions. Fewer inclusions make a diamond appear more flawless.

• Carat Weight: This measures the size of the diamond. While larger diamonds are often desirable, quality should always be a priority. A well-cut, high-quality diamond ensures brilliance regardless of size.

WHY QUALITY MATTERS MORE THAN SIZE

A common misconception is that bigger always means better. In reality, a smaller diamond with excellent cut, colour, and clarity will look more impressive than a larger one of lower quality. Investing in a well-proportioned, high-quality diamond ensures that your engagement ring remains timeless and retains its brilliance for generations.

Choosing an engagement ring is an emotional and significant purchase, and expert guidance makes all the difference. At Baker Brothers, we pride ourselves on offering only the finest diamonds, carefully selected for their exceptional quality. The International MozART Group at Alban Arena

27 February 2025

The International MozART Group is coming to the UK this February! With more than 5 million tickets sold in 50+ countries, the string quartet has more than just a smattering of humour interwoven amongst the horsehair of their bows. Hysterical, even if you don’t know your Mozart from your Bach, but exquisitely performed if you do! In order to better understand the performance and genre the MozART group has represented since 1995, it is good to start with what the gentlemen have said some years ago: “We exist despite the sober formality of great concert halls, despite

the boredom of classical musicians’ life, despite fanatic lovers of classical music, despite fans of rock, rap or pop who are afraid of classical music. We treat our Muse with a humorous irony and we’re sure, she will have nothing against it!”

- MozART Group. From exquisitely performed football chants, to Elton John’s Crocodile Rock and all the way through to an interesting reenactment of a Violin catching its muse cheating

with a Cello, yep you read that right. The MozART Group promises beautifully played classical music with an hilarious twist, and something you have never seen before.

All four gentlemen of the MozART group are well educated instrumentalists who graduated from prestigious Academies of Music in Warsaw and Łódz, but they decided to play classical music in a humorous way. Filip Jaślar, Michał Sikorski, Paweł Kowaluk, Bolesław Błaszczyk and former cellist and founding member Artur Renion created a worldwide unique musical cabaret, where the music, not the words are the source of joy and laughter.

The musicians of the MozART group have been playing together since 1995. At the beginning, they presented short musical jokes on Canal Plus Television and gave their first debut in 1997 at the PAKA competition of young Polish cabarets in Krakow. In the same year, they presented their first cabaret program entitled “Mozart’s still alive” and since then, they have played concerts in all of Europe, Canada, the U.S.A and Asia. The MozART group are frequent TV guests including international galas and concerts. The quartet received prestigious prizes like the Grand Prix of the XVIII Festival of Satire and Comedy in Lidzbark, The special prize from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Poland for outstanding achievements and 15 years on stage and all three main prizes at the 10th “Festival des Artes Burlesques” in St.Etienne/France: the Grand Prix of the Jury, the Audience Award and the Press Award. And that’s just the beginning! Tickets available via mozartgroup.net

FANS OF THE MOZART GROUP HAVE SAID:

“I think it is wonderful when very talented musicians make music fun. It just puts their talent and the music at a totally different level. We all have heard and enjoyed the original pieces in their entirety with a full orchestra. But presenting those same iconic pieces as a backdrop for a little fun and enjoyment makes it so much better. These guys are great.”

“BRAVO! Magnificent! Love the music...the musicality...the humor... the musicianship of each gentleman...Splendid!”

“Coolest, most original comedy I’ve seen in some years. Bravo & well done!”

“I laughed and laughed every single minute, from the start to the end... These guys are real medicine for the soul…”

So if you’re looking for a hilariously funny yet beautifully performed world class show, we think you’ve found what you’re after.

Good Food Guide Awards 2025

These are set to be the stars of the restaurant scene this year, you won’t want to miss them. By

The restaurant scene can be pretty volatile, with chains seemingly taking over and independent neighbourhood boltholes opening and going bust on a loop, often within a couple of months. It can be hard to know where exactly you should pin your hopes when it comes to a slap up meal out.

That’s why The Good Food Guide Awards 2025, exists, to point your taste buds in the tastiest direction. In partnership with OpenTable, the honours this year are taking place on February 3 at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in central London, hosted by broadcaster and former Blue Peter presenter Richard Bacon.

While you’ll have to wait until then to find out which establishments are going to take home the gongs, you can get a head start on booking tables at the restaurants set to be on every ‘top 10 eats’ list for the rest of 2025. We’d start by checking out this lot…

Based in a 300-year-old country inn, on the brink of a pine forest, Osip in Bruton, Somerset is all clean lines, white washed walls and glowy lights.

You’ll want to move in, even before you taste the food. Luckily, it has four guest bedrooms, opening soon, so you could roll out of bed and into the dining room for a set tasting menu that goes big on ingredients grown on the restaurant’s own farm.

The lunch menu is pretty good value (£95) and features things like Jerusalem artichoke, Orkney scallop, roasted chicken juices and treacle and ale sourdough with kefir butter, as well as an intriguing pudding of winter roots, bergamot and pine nut ice creams. Osip, its fruit and veg plots and sister wine bar and bistro, The Old Pharmacy, are the work of chef patron Merlin Labron Johnson who got a Michelin star when he was just 24, at a former joint, Portland – he knows what he’s doing.

It’s up against the gold and glitz of The Ritz Restaurant in London, as well as the warm madeleines made to order at the legendary St JOHN (Smithfield), also in London, for the Restaurant of the Year gong.

SKOF, MANCHESTER

If you hate tablecloths, you’ll love Skof. The baby

of chef Tom Barnes, it has a “strict no tablecloth” policy and no dress code either, so yes, you can wear jeans to dinner.

The Manc restaurant is anti-pretentiousness of any kind, despite the fact that what’s on offer is very much seasonal British tasting menu fare. So you should feel relaxed and at home when tucking into cured mackerel with horseradish, with potato

flatbread, fermented gooseberries and dill, or gingerbread mousse with poached quince.

The space is cool too – a former drapery warehouse – in Manchester’s NOMA neighbourhood. Skof is up for Best New Restaurant, alongside…

LYLA, EDINBURGH

Seafood is central to everything that’s served at Lyla Edinburgh. The chefs there take the best line caught fish and sustainable shellfish they can get their oven gloves on from the Scottish Isles, and turn it into delicate plates of art.

They serve a 10-course tasting menu in the evening, or a five to seven course extravaganza at lunch time, celebrating all that seafood alongside organic fruit, veg and meat and foraged ingredients too. It’s already won a slew of best restaurant awards, so there’s quite a buzz around it – you’ll want to book a table asap once they reopen for the year on January 16.

BRIAR, SOMERSET

Another west country restaurant is making a name for itself. Briar, also in Bruton, is similarly up for best new restaurant, and comes from former River Cottage alumni and Great British Menu 2022 finalist Sam Lomas – he also happens to be up for the Chef to Watch award too.

Briar is in the old ironmonger’s shop at hotel Number One and the menu is super seasonal and they say, “unfussy”, from Westcombe cheddar gougeres, wild garlic capers to smoked pork sausage, cider mustard and Somerset apple cake, butterscotch and clotted cream. Stay at the hotel and you’ll be able to try breakfast too – think compotes and soft boiled eggs.

JAKE DOLIN – MANTECA, LONDON

There’s been a lot of British tasting menus on this list so far, so apologies. But now for a big old plate of pasta. At Italian restaurant Manteca, chef Jake Dolin is feeding people hand-rolled pasta, dishes made using the whole animal, nose-to-tail, and has an excellent cocktail menu on hand too.

They even have an in-house salumeria, for all your cured meat needs. Order the strozapretti, brown crab cacio e pepe (super rich and peppery), have a glass of wine and imagine you’re on your holidays.

MEEDU SAAD – SUPER8 RESTAURANTS, LONDON

Giving Dolan a run for his money in the Chef to Watch category is head chef Meedu Saad, best known for helming KILN in Soho, London. Kiln is a Thai grill, where you can sit at the bar while the chefs cook over hot coals and open flames, grilling skewers of insanely delicious meat and throwing together fiery salads. Always order the stir fried Cornish greens and soy, and the clay pot baked glass noodles with Tamworth belly and brown crab meat is an absolute must.

THE RUSSELL NORMAN AWARD FOR RESTAURATEUR OF THE YEAR

Perhaps the most anticipated award of the night will be the The Russell Norman Award for Restaurateur of the Year. Adam Hyman, publisher of the Good Food Guide, has launched the award to remember and pay tribute to his friend, Brutto and Polpo restaurateur Russell Norman, who died by suicide in 2023. Ones to watch in this category are Florence Mae Maglanoc of modern Filipino restaurant Donia and the rest of the Maginhawa Group, and noodle master Guirong Wei (Master Wei, X’ian Impression, Dream X’ian).

THE FINEST SCHOOLS IN THE UK

PREPARE YOUR CHILD FOR AN AMBITIOUS FUTURE

Choosing the right school is one of the most important decisions a parent can make.

At Haberdashers’ Elstree Schools, students benefit from an exceptional education that blends the best of single-sex learning with the benefits of a co-educational environment.

Sat on a stunning 100-acre campus in Elstree, Hertfordshire, Habs Boys and Habs Girls offer an inspiring education for students aged four to 18, encouraging intellectual ambition, strong character and a commitment to make a profound impact in the world.

With a mission to be at the forefront of education, the schools offer a dynamic and forward-thinking curriculum, designed to equip students with the qualities needed to tackle futures not yet imagined: independence, resilience and an open mind.

Innovation is embedded in the educational experience; students and staff alike are encouraged to explore new possibilities and challenge assumptions in every facet of school life, while the recently appointed Director of Innovation is driving initiatives that prepare students for an evolving digital landscape.

While Haberdashers might be known for its academic excellence, a Habs student will strive for more than good exam results. A comprehensive pastoral care programme nurtures students’ emotional, social and spiritual development, while an outstanding range of co-curricular activities provide the opportunity to explore interests and

talents outside the classroom.

As part of their Profound Impact Strategy, the schools are also deepening engagement with the wider world. From working with disadvantaged students in local schools, to collaborating with leading organisations in sports and the arts, our outreach initiatives involve hundreds of students and staff each week, fostering stronger community connections and broader perspectives.

This commitment to social responsibility is further supported by The Habs Foundation, which promotes strong alumni and parent networks, creating lifelong connections and mentorship opportunities.

With world-class facilities and ongoing investment in campus development, Habs is continually evolving to meet the needs of future generations. Recent campus enhancements include upgraded sixth-form spaces, planned refurbishments of key buildings and sustainability initiatives aimed at creating an environmentally responsible learning environment. Outstanding performing arts provision sees STAHS students shine

At STAHS, academic excellence is a given.

Seventy-three per cent of A levels awarded in 2024 were A*s or As, and 86% of GCSEs were 9-7.

But our students’ ambitions go way beyond the academic curriculum, with excellence consistently achieved in so many other areas, including the arts.

From The 39 Steps to Sister Act, students are given frequent opportunities to excel in their performing arts endeavours, with our musicians, actors and technicians collaborating on some truly outstanding productions.

STAHS received a prestigious Artsmark Platinum Award in 2023, with the assessor commending the School for ‘clearly making a difference through the arts and drawing attention to its benefits and affordances’.

Drama and Music are both on offer at GCSE, with more ambitious pupils able to take Music in Year 10, while A level offerings include Music, and Drama and Theatre.

The 2024 production of Les Misérables brought more than 140 students together in its cast, crew and orchestra, with sold-out audiences delighting in this ambitious collaboration between our Drama and Music departments over three consecutive nights.

Director of Drama Chris Bhantoa said he chose Les Misérables because ‘it’s an epic show,

entirely befitting of our students’ ambition’.

An ideal match for the ambitious staging, then: while Matilda Jr. saw the cast swinging over the audience’s heads and Wendy & Peter had them ‘flying’ through the air, the Les Misérables cast rose to the challenges presented by a revolving stage.

Mr Bhantoa said: ‘I am so proud of the cast, crew and orchestra – all from different year groups, and with lots going on academically – for coming together to create such an ambitious, intricate production.’

With Drama, Instrumental and Choral Scholarships on offer to Year 7, 10 and 12 applicants, alongside Art, DT, Sport, Debating and Academic Scholarships, STAHS is the perfect fit for able students, wherever their talents lie.

PREPPED FOR LIFE

Merchant Taylors’ Prep School, set in 15 acres of leafy grounds in Northwood, delivers the best of both worlds: a strong academic tradition with an extensive range of co-curricular and sporting activities. Located just minutes from Merchant Taylors’ senior school, it provides an excellent all-through option for high-achieving pupils.

The new Head, Miles Chester, who joined in September, brings extensive experience and a fresh, dynamic approach to the school. He is proud of the prep school’s quality of teaching and the holistic education it offers. “Through an enriched curriculum, we foster every opportunity for pupils to develop their individual potential, nurturing their unique passions, interests and aspirations. The foundation we provide ensures they are equipped with the skills and confidence to transition seamlessly to senior school,” said Mr. Chester.

The focus on the individual pupil is central to the Taylors’ ethos. From the very beginning, teachers take the time to get to know each pupil and their abilities, within a small-class setting. This allows enquiring minds to develop in an

environment where each pupil is given a sense of belonging that helps them to achieve.

Through an extensive programme of extracurricular clubs and activities, boys are encouraged to try new things and explore their talents and creativity. The school uses sport to reinforce its ethos and to instil discipline, teamwork, fair play, responsibility and respect.

Having the senior school nearby offers numerous opportunities for collaboration, particularly in sports, music and academics. With pupils now transitioning to senior school at the end of Year 6, the school is expanding its intake for Year 3 from September 2026. “This is a great opportunity for able pupils with potential to join our school and benefit from a well-balanced education and smooth transition to the senior school”, Mr Chester added.

SCHOOL AIMS TO BUILD LIFELONG APPRECIATION OF SPORT

Sarum Hall School’s Under 11’s A and B netball teams are unbeaten this year, with the A team achieving a remarkable victory at the prestigious NLCS Netball Tournament last term. Competing against 16 schools, the team showcased exceptional teamwork, resilience and determination, securing the overall championship.

Their teacher Miss Vettese says “I’m so proud of the team. They displayed exceptional poise and focus throughout this tough competition.”

The School has placed great emphasis on sport in recent years. Head of Sport, Miss Vettese, joined in 2022 and has since driven the sporting

achievements of the school forward with great enthusiasm. Competitions and fixtures with other schools have more than trebled and the school have invested heavily in new equipment and resources for the PE department.

Highlights this year will see Miss Vettese take a group of netballers of all abilities to a special training weekend at Condover Hall in Shropshire. They will enjoy a fun-packed stay and develop their interpersonal and key skills both on and off the court. The gymnastics team is also gearing up for an exciting season of competitions, aiming to build on their incredible medal success from last year.

Miss Vettese continues, “Sport is so important for young people and has been undervalued for many years. My aim is to give pupils of all abilities a love and appreciation of sport from a young age. I am proud of the sporting accolades that we are starting to achieve and I can’t wait to see us continue to compete across a range of disciplines.”

Miss Karen Coles, Headmistress at Sarum Hall School, says: “While we strive to be the very best in sport that we can be, sport is about more than just winning. The life lessons that sport can teach our children go far beyond the physical benefits. Sport helps to develop character and to learn important skills such as respect, problem solving, and resilience. It is wonderful to see our children achieve so much in such a short time.” sarumhallschool.co.uk

REFLECTIONS AND ASPIRATIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR at St Margaret’s School

Throughout 2024, life at St Margaret’s has continued to focus on the importance of community, compassion and enrichment and during the course of the last year we have increased our partnerships within the local community. Our goal is to inspire and challenge pupils from across our wider community and we hope to repeat our success this year. St Margaret’s is particularly passionate about giving children opportunities to problem solve and we are keen to continue with hosting events that encourage pupils to work together in a focused way and to come up with thoughtful solutions to real-word problems. It has also been wonderful to welcome more children into our school from inside the local community during 2024.

The last year has also been an exciting year in sports. Earlier in 2024 we hosted the Hertfordshire Primary Cross-Country Championships in association with HSAA (Hertfordshire Schools Athletics Association) at our campus in Bushey.

It is the first time the school has hosted the prestigious sporting event, which is the main primary school county race in the region, also acting as a trial race for top athletes to try out to represent the county at the national championships. The event, which saw 438 Year 5 and Year 6 pupils compete and finish the course, involved four races, all spanning one mile in length. A total of 69 schools from across Hertfordshire took part in the races, including Aldenham School, Codicote, Beechwood Park, Berkhamsted Prep and many more. In addition, we hosted our first High

Performance Programme (HPP) event for our elite young athletes in the summer of 2024 as part of our commitment to nurturing and mentoring sporting talent while giving children opportunities to meet role models from the sporting world. With considerable investment in our arts facilities and the addition of dance this academic year, pupils have been given multiple opportunities to join troupes and participate in high level competitions across the country. Earlier in 2024, we hosted an incredible Expressive Arts Showcase for local parents at the Radlett Centre. The event was a wonderful opportunity for local Herts pupils to perform in front of a live audience and showcase their amazing creative talents. We are excited about 2025 as we continue to invest heavily in our wellbeing provision at St Margaret’s to ensure that every child is given the right support to thrive and learn. We will also continue to boost our co-curricular offering with many new activities as we move into 2025. Finally, St Margaret’s is also celebrating five years as a co-educational school in January 2025 with boys currently making up 39% of the whole school. stmargarets-school.org.uk

Empowering Future Leaders

Preparing Boys and Girls for an Ever-Changing World

We’re living in an ever-changing world, where the skills required to succeed are constantly evolving. The ‘Future of Jobs Report 2025’ by the World Economic Forum highlights a growing demand for leadership, empathy, resilience and analytical thinking as essential skills in the future jobs market.

At Aldwickbury, we embrace change and remain at the forefront to ensure pupils are fully prepared for the future. Whilst academic success remains central to our education, we place great emphasis on our Future Thinking Curriculum to engage curiosity and problem-solving abilities. This includes sparking a passion for innovation through coding and robotics to instilling a sense of adventure with outdoor learning experiences. Beyond this, daily life continues to nurture fundamental skills needed for the future.

In recognition of our forward-thinking vision, we’re proud to have been named the UK’s ‘Independent Boys’ School of the Year’ 2024. We’re excited for girls to join Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 from September 2025 to also benefit from our holistic education.

Leadership through Experience

Our pupils grow into leaders through experiences inside and outside the classroom. From taking centre stage in productions to leading teams on the sports field, pupils develop the ability to inspire and guide others.

Building Resilience

Resilience is vital, and we teach pupils to embrace challenges and learn from mistakes. Our open approach to mental health equips pupils with the tools to navigate life’s challenges, enabling them to approach setbacks and pressurised environments with confidence.

Analytical Thinking

Analytical thinking is embedded in daily learning, from maths lessons to chess club, helping to strengthen strategic decision-making abilities. These skills enhance academic performance and prepares children to thrive in an increasingly datadriven world.

Future Ready

The world is moving quickly, and so are we. We prepare children not just for the careers of today but for those yet to exist. Pupils leave us achieving outstanding academic results and just as importantly, as kind people, ready to reach their full potential.

MEET THE HEAD

Meet Mr Richard McCann, Head of Prep School, at St Columba’s College

Born and raised in Belfast, I studied History at Queen’s University before embarking on an adventure that took me to Thailand, where I taught English. That experience ignited my passion for education, leading me to St Columba’s College, where I started as a History teacher. Now, 22 years later, I have been fortunate to take on a variety of roles, from Head of Sixth Form to my current position as Head of Prep.

A Foundation for Life at St Columba’s College Prep School

Nestled in the heart of St Albans, St Columba’s College Prep School is more than just a place of learning, it is a thriving community where children are known, valued, and treasured. As Head of Prep, I see firsthand how this environment nurtures young minds, instilling confidence, curiosity, and a love of learning that lasts a lifetime.

A School That Feels Like Home

What makes St Columba’s College Prep School special is its deep sense of community. It is a place where relationships are at the heart of everything we do. Our open-door policy ensures strong connections between children, parents, grandparents, and staff. We respect each pupil’s individuality, and every child is encouraged to be themselves, knowing they are supported in a safe

and loving environment.

From the moment they start their journey with us, our pupils become part of a close-knit school family that continues long after they leave. It is always heartwarming to meet former pupils who fondly recall their time at St Columba’s, sharing stories of friendships, adventures, and lessons learned.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

At St Columba’s, I believe that education extends far beyond the traditional curriculum. We encourage pupils to develop essential soft skills, equipping them to be adaptable, resilient, and future-ready. This year, we are particularly excited about revamping our Forest Area, enhancing opportunities for outdoor learning, exploration, and teamwork.

With a rich co-curricular programme, children discover new interests and talents, whether through sport, music, drama, or leadership opportunities. These experiences help to shape confident, kind, and charismatic individuals who embrace challenges with enthusiasm.

Leading by Example

I strive to lead by example, by simply working hard, being reliable and authentic, putting our pupil’s first, and creating an environment where staff and pupils alike feel empowered to innovate, collaborate, and grow. Change is embraced, and we continue to evolve, ensuring that our pupils receive the very best education in an ever-changing world. The culture here is one of solidarity and honesty.

The Heart of Our Mission

Our priorities are simple yet powerful:

Happiness: A joyful childhood lays the foundation for a fulfilled life.

Belonging: Every child should feel valued and celebrated.

Community: Past, present, and future Columbans remain part of our extended family.

We are not just preparing children for the next stage of their education; we are shaping individuals who will make a difference in the world. And that, to me, is the greatest privilege of all.

The start of the year is the perfect time to explore exciting new beginnings for your child’s future. Our next Prep Open Morning is on Friday 21st March, do come and join us.

How to find the perfect NUDE LIPSTICK for every skin tone

From the undertone to the finish –here’s how to find your perfect nude lipstick. By

Finding the perfect nude lipstick is no small feat. It’s the holy grail of everyone’s make-up bag, and can make a look go from pared-back to perfectly polished.

Whether you reach for a deep matte like Zendaya, a satin finish like Hailey Bieber or a corally nude like Nicole Kidman – the formula, shade and staying power require a lot of thought when finding the perfect nude.

So, to demystify the process, celebrity makeup maestros share their top tips for finding your perfect nude lipstick.

How to find your skin’s undertone

The first step when finding your perfect nude is to determine your skin’s undertone.

If you have cool undertones, this will be

evident through bluish or purple veins. Oriflame‘s make-up artist and trainer Natalia Trepashko recommends colder pinks like mauve or berry.

“Avoid overly yellow or orange tones as they can clash,” she says.

Those with warm undertones, who have golden or peachy hues with green veins, should look for peach, caramel or brownish nudes.

If you’re neutral, you’re in luck, as it means the world’s your oyster when it comes to nude lips.

“If you’re neutral, veins are not distinctly green or blue,” says Trepashko. “You have more flexibility, and both cool and warm nudes can work – most likely taupe or beige is good on you.”

If you still can’t tell – it’s best to do a swatch of each in person.

“It’s always wise to swatch a few nude lipsticks side by side first before trying any one,” says BBC Glow Up judge and MAC Cosmetics director of make-up artistry, Dominic Skinner. “Then try on the one that has the same undertone as yourself to see if it fits.”

The perfect nude for darker skin tones

The deeper your skin tone, the trickier it may be to find the perfect nude, as some shades are more likely to wash you out.

“Don’t be afraid to go richer and deeper,” says Skinner. “Some plums, berries and copper-toned lip colours can compliment deeper skin tones.”

Opting for nudes that lean into more brown than pink undertones can better compliment your skin tone – but personal preference is key – so don’t be afraid to experiment.

Matte, satin or gloss?

The finish of a nude lip depends on the look you’re wanting to go for.

“Matte is for bold, statement make-up; satin is for a more balanced, classy vibe; and gloss adds youthful freshness,” says Trepashko.

If you’re looking for a look that will carry you through from day-to-night, Skinner recommends a satin finish.

“Nudes look great in any finish but personally I love a satin finish – not too shiny and not too matte.”

Balancing a nude lip with the rest of your make-up

It may sounds ridiculous – because isn’t a nude lip supposed to match any make-up look?

That’s where you’re wrong. Balancing your eye and cheek colour to your lip plays a huge part in ensuring a flattering nude look.

“Choose a nude lipstick close to your natural lip colour to avoid competing with strong eye or cheek looks,” says Trepashko.

Skinner suggests working backwards. “Start with the bold feature first, whether it’s your eyes or cheeks. This helps you gauge how nude the lip should be.

“You might need to add an additional lip liner to the look to help make the lips stand out, without drawing attention away from the bolder eye or cheek.”

“Nudes look great in any finish”

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

“The biggest mistake is thinking nude equals pale,” says Skinner. “Nude isn’t about matching your skin colour; it’s about creating harmony.”

Like Skinner, Trepashko warns against going too light when choosing a nude. “The best nude matches your own lip colour,” she says. “Always exfoliate and moisturise beforehand, and don’t forget a matching lip liner for definition.”

But make sure the lip liner isn’t too dark, as professional make-up artist and founder of Ayu Cosmetics Suzie O’Neill says, “Ensure that your lip liner is the same shade as lipstick or one shade darker.

“You do not want your lipstick coming off and being left with a dark outline with no lipstick! Take a look at your lip conditions too – choosing a matte lipstick will dry out lips that are already dry.”

And don’t forget about the weather, as Skinner notes, “Your skin tone and undertone can change in different seasons, so you should consider changing your nude lip colour.

“You might need something more warmer in summer to compliment your tan or something cooler in winter to match the cooler light we get in winter.”

Oxona Health FOCUS: ACNE

WHAT CAUSES ACNE?

Acne arises from a combination of factors that interact with one another. Firstly, the activity of sebaceous (grease) glands plays a crucial role. When these glands become active during the teenage years, they produce significantly more sebum, leading to clogged pores.

Secondly, a common skin bacterium that thrives in greasy environments, Cutibacterium Acnes, triggers the skin’s immune system to respond by forming pus-filled spots.

The hormonal fluctuations in girls also contribute to premenstrual worsening of acne.

Other contributing factors include a genetic predisposition, as acne often runs in families.

Finally, some medications can induce acne. For instance, the progesterone-only contraceptive pill (the mini pill) and some combined oral contraceptives can exacerbate acne.

MYTH BUSTING

Diet rarely contributes to acne. While maintaining a healthy, balanced diet is important, evidence remains weak regarding the impact of chocolate, dairy, refined sugars, and processed foods on acne. However, some studies have shown a link between stress and acne, so managing stress levels may be beneficial.

“Some studies have shown a link between stress and acne, so managing stress levels may be beneficial”

Another common misconception is that aggressively treating the skin with harsh products will alleviate acne. However, this approach can backfire, as the skin may respond by producing more sebum, worsening the condition. It is essential to treat the skin gently and avoid excessive use of scrubs and harsh over-the-counter treatments.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF ACNE LESIONS

There are various types of acne lesions, the most common being whiteheads and blackheads. Whiteheads occur when hair follicles become clogged and remain closed at the skin’s surface. Conversely, blackheads are open to the skin’s surface, and their contents oxidize, giving them a black appearance.

If whiteheads become inflamed, they turn into papules, and when inflammation and pus increase, they become pustules. As these lesions combine and grow larger, they form nodules and cysts.

TREATMENTS

There is a wide range of topical treatments available over the counter that can effectively manage acne. These include topical niacinamide, azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and retinols. Maintaining a good skincare routine can also

help prevent the need for prescribed medications in some cases. Gentle cleansers and oil-free moisturizers are essential. Expensive does not necessarily mean better—cost-effective products such as CeraVe Blemish Control Cleanser, The INKEY List Salicylic Acid Cleanser, and La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo+M Anti-Breakout Corrective Gel Moisturizer are excellent choices.

For more severe acne, prescription treatments are required. In straightforward cases, topical combination products can be highly effective. Oral antibiotics may be added for a period to calm flareups, ideally for no more than a few months. Some brands of the oral combined contraceptive pill can be beneficial for women, and spironolactone is an excellent option in selected cases.

Recently, a combination of red and blue light intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy has shown promise in improving mild to moderate acne. However, this treatment option is not yet widely available.

For very severe or persistent cases, the most effective treatment is isotretinoin (also known as Accutane or Roaccutane). It can only be prescribed by dermatology specialists but can be transformative. Isotretinoin is the only drug known to cure acne rather than just manage symptoms. Contrary to much of the misinformation spread on social media, isotretinoin is a safe and effective

treatment when prescribed correctly. Waiting lists for isotretinoin on the NHS can be over 12 months, leading many patients to seek private treatment. At Oxona, our experienced doctors can start patients on isotretinoin within a week. The Oxona team understand the devasting impact acne can have on young people’s self esteem and happiness. We aim to treat patients swiftly and at a fair price.

Booking an appointment is the first step in a patient’s acne journey. Our helpful reception team are on hand to advise you. Appointments can be booked online, by email or telephone.

Trend: Castlecore

For thousands of years of human history, we have seen castles as symbols of status, protection, power and most importantly (in our eyes anyway) gorgeous renderings of architectural design. The reason so many stand around the world to this day, surrounded by other modern masterpieces of construction is that they will always inspire marvel and stir curiosity. So why did we stop building

them? That we can’t answer, but what we can do is help you style your space using some mid (13th) century majesty. So for dining tables fit for royalty and lighting that would even bring illumination to the dark ages, stick around and explore with us our latest trend, Castlecore.

DOOM & GLOOM:

Creating an ambience isn’t just reliant on furniture, but the entire mood of the room. Surrounding yourself with tones that are tantalisingly downbeat often provides a subtle, yet moody, backdrop to highlight the bold and grand nature of castle life. Adorning the walls with a rich red or an overgrown green is one of the best ways to put your favourite pieces front and centre.

THE ROUND TABLE:

A seat at the table has rarely symbolically meant more than in the stories of castle courts. In this trend, large dining tables are characterised by large amounts of space for your nearest and dearest and often contain dark and distinguished wooden elements that make it a strong statement of robust interiors. Curved edges encompass the togetherness that harsh edges do not.

“Creating an ambience isn’t just reliant on furniture, but the entire mood of the room”

PERSONAL CHAMBERS:

Bedrooms. In today’s time they contain a myriad of mod-cons, but in the middle-ages they were usually focused around one thing: their namesake. The throne wasn’t the only important individual piece of furniture in a castle; a place to sleep and rest has been the cornerstone of a quintessential home since the human story began. So the exuberance of a four-poster bed, a room within a room, is the ideal way to go from bedroom to bed chamber.

A LIGHT IN THE DARK:

When we think of castles, our minds are cast to ceilings as high as the eye can see. But with tall rooms come the inevitable - tall lighting. Chandeliers have been a staple of castles since we had a word for ‘fire hazard.’ In 2025 they’re still a seriously stylish way of illuminating your space, albeit with candlelight replaced by something with a bit more longevity. However, the lack of flickering flames doesn’t mean that we need to

“A place to sleep and rest has been the cornerstone of a quintessential home since the human story began”

forgo the style that was so widely celebrated for so long. A modern day masterpiece is the pinnacle of Castlecore.

CABINET OF WONDERS:

Storage, at times, is arguably the least interesting element of interiors. It is a space merely to hold other things we cherish and prize. However, placed in the right location and paired with the correct surroundings, it takes on an entire new lease of life. Displaying your favourite objects whilst seamlessly and stylishly blending with a grandiose backdrop ironically makes a large cabinet a subtle Castlecore detail. chaplins.co.uk

BOCONCEPT ANNOUNCES HELENA CHRISTENSEN AS GLOBAL ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

BoConcept ushers in a new creative era as it appoints the world-renowned Danish supermodel, photographer and style icon as Global Artistic Director for the brand.

In her new role, Helena will help to shape an exciting new chapter for the global interiors company, working closely with new design talent, featuring in and producing brand campaigns, and designing and styling pieces that speak to her effortless sense of style and easy elegance.

Helena lends her unique experience and perspective to BoConcept’s ‘Art of Living Danishly’ campaign bringing to life what it means to live well through inspiring content series,

engaging lifestyle pieces across BoConcept’s channels and conversations with fellow Danish creatives addressing what it is to “Live Danish”.

The appointment takes BoConcept’s longstanding practice of collaborating with renowned designers to a new level. Helena says: “This is a dream come true for me. I’ve always loved interiors and this speaks to so many of my passions for design, creativity, and living intentionally.”

FROM FASHION TO FURNITURE

Helena says her whole career has been about “what the eye sees and how it makes you feel”. As one

of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ group of supermodels that dominated catwalks, billboards and magazines in the ’90s, she was part of the fashion and culture explosion of the decade – front and centre of an era that shaped culture as we know it.

Now, she says, “the way I decorate my home is as important as how I dress myself,” and her love of home and deep appreciation for living well keeps her firmly in step with today’s zeitgeist, favouring wellness and self-care, and quality over quantity.

As part of her role, Helena will be designing furniture and developing fabrics for the brand. Interiors have always been a passion, and, alongside her modelling and photography, she has worked in the interiors space for two decades. Twenty years ago she launched the concept store Butik in New York City with Leif Sigersen. She is also co-founder, with long-term collaborator Camilla Staerk, of their interior design and lifestyle studio Staerk & Christensen, which creates work across fashion, furniture, photography and film.

About her approach, Helena says: “Design is more than the details of aesthetics, it’s about how it makes you feel when you walk through the door,” she says. “When your environment is comforting, beautiful and feels like a true reflection of you, life is better. You’re freer, more productive, more creative and more relaxed and joyful. That matters a lot to me!”

DANISH DESIGN’S NEW WAVE

The partnership is also rooted in a shared Danish heritage and cultural experience. Copenhagenborn Helena, who lives in Manhattan and has a beach house on the Danish coast, joins BoConcept at a time when Danish design and the country’s creative and cultural output is globally influential

“As part of her role, Helena will be designing furniture and developing fabrics for the brand. Interiors have always been a passion, and, alongside her modelling and photography, she has worked in the interiors space for two decades”

– continuously shifting the dial across fashion, design, food and beyond.

“Being Global Artistic Director at BoConcept is more than just a role to me; it’s a creative journey of unpacking what it means to live well and sharing the beauty and brilliance of Danish design.”

THE POWER OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Helena’s first creative endeavour comes with the launch of ‘Flora’, an exclusive set of art prints from her personal photography archive, available to buy in March 2025. The capsule of botanical prints highlights Christensen’s love of nature and capturing the beauty of every day. “There’s something so fascinating about looking at a flower, deeply and intensely,” Helena says. “The magic and complexity of nature is almost impossible to believe and understand, but I’m able to capture it I feel, somehow, with my camera.”

A celebrated photographer, Helena’s work has been published extensively in art and design magazines and is frequently showcased in galleries from Europe to the US. Helena was also a founding partner and creative director of the hugely influential Nylon magazine.

Chief Marketing Officer Paula Mc Guinness says: “We are truly excited to harness our BoConcept design expertise with Helena’s intrinsic sense of global style and her Danish life philosophy. We look forward to shaping a new agenda together to inspire consumers around the world.”

Interior Trends 2025

Where Saints Go announce the trends set to take interiors by storm in 2025

Homewares that bring together the serene and the bold are going to be big in 2025, according to the experts at interiors powerhouse Where Saints Go.

The eclectic interiors brand, which is renowned for its contemporary take on classic Scandi, Industrial and Boho pieces, believes the interiors world will be dominated by opposing themes as grounded and innovative styles come together to create one harmonious scheme.

Tracey Hague, Co-Founder of Where Saints Go, said: “There is a definite desire for interiors that are comforting, offering a sanctuary from the outside world. But this will be combined with pops of maximalism and an injection of colour to bring character and charm.

“A quirky combination of warmth, personality and eco-conscious design will be central to interiors in 2025.”

Here Tracey shares her top interior trends for 2025:

arched cabinetry.

TRENDING COLOURS

Earthy and Calming Neutrals: Expect a continuation of calm tones—like sand, clay, and muted sage. These grounding colours create a sophisticated and harmonious space, ideal for those seeking tranquillity.

Warm and Inviting Tones: Warm browns, such as Pantone’s Colour of the Year Mocha Mousse, terracotta, and mustard are making a strong comeback, offering a cosy, inviting feel.

Bold Accents: Deep jewel tones such as emerald green, ruby red, and sapphire blue are likely to be big in 2025, often paired with neutrals to add vibrancy without overwhelming a space.

FABRICS AND TEXTURES

Soft, Tactile Comforts: Plush fabrics like bouclé, velvets, and chenille will continue to make spaces feel comforting and luxurious.

Natural and Sustainable Choices: There’s an emphasis on organic fabrics like cotton, linen, and wool, particularly those that are sustainably sourced.

Textured Weaves: Expect to see more intricate patterns and tactile weaves in upholstery. Patterns inspired by artisanal craftsmanship and heritage textile techniques are becoming focal points.

Modular and Adaptable Pieces: With space optimization in mind, modular furniture that can be reconfigured for different needs will trend. Pieces like sectional sofas and stackable chairs are being designed for both aesthetics and function.

Vintage and Retro Influences: A nostalgic revival is underway with 70s and 80s influences making their way into modern furniture. Expect pieces with bold lines, retro patterns, and a touch of glam.

MICRO TREND HIGHLIGHTS

Statement Lighting: Lighting will become more sculptural, often as focal points in rooms. Think large, geometric pendant lights or organic, flowing shapes.

Mixed Materials: Combining wood with metal, glass with fabric, and other unique pairings adds depth and interest, allowing designers to play with texture contrasts. wheresaintsgo.co.uk

CS PROPERTY GROUP

The Renters’ Rights Bill, if you haven’t heard about it yet, is the Labour government’s take on shaking up the Private Rented Sector to ‘transform the experience of private renting’, with new legislation expected to take effect later this year. For landlords, it looks on the surface like a disaster waiting to happen. For tenants, it looks like things are about to get much better. As we’ll see for several reasons, both are wrong….

The Bill is fundamentally one-sided (there’s a clue in the name) and it doesn’t address the root causes of the structural issues facing the UK housing market. In our opinion, these are largely underpinned by a shortage of supply, that is, houses available to buy or rent.

and want a good tenant – that is, someone who looks after the property and pays on time, for as long as possible – most landlords don’t want to increase the rent unnecessarily or serve notice for the tenant to move out, because every change in tenancy incurs costs, which leads us onto the removal of fixed term tenancies.

Under the proposed legislation, tenants will be able to give 2 months’ notice to leave at any time after moving in. The landlord in most cases will need to give 4 months’ notice to the tenant under specific grounds – this encapsulates the one-sidedness, and in practice, the security of tenure will be lower for tenants as a result.

Of course, there will also be some really good things to come out of this.

Things like the landlord database, making it known where landlords have a history of bad behaviour, this is brilliant. But there is so much

Restricted supply is made worse by expensive build costs, a largely difficult planning system, and continued population growth. The result is that the imbalance between supply and demand continues to grow, and rents are forced upwards.

For a landlord to continue offering their property to the market, they need to be able to make a reasonable return by controlling costs and ensuring that they have sufficient income coming in to cover the mortgage and running costs – contrary to popular belief, most landlords do not have a surplus of money lying around, and changes to tax and interest rates in recent years have seen more and more landlords topping up the rent from their own pocket to cover costs and improvements to make sure that their tenant still has somewhere to live. Without the right help and advice to manage this correctly, clearly both the landlord and tenant are in trouble.

What happens if landlords leave the market?

The market rates for rent will increase as supply falls – one of the very things the Bill is designed to alleviate. This is clearly even worse for tenants. The vast majority of landlords are good people

which landlords need to be prepared for – with the right management, there’s no reason why this can’t be just another piece of legislation to adapt to and overcome.

For tenants, the short-term outlook may appear better, but there will be lasting implications on the rental market, making it much worse for renters in the medium to long term.

As a landlord, there are opportunities that come with the changes. We firmly believe that your properties can continue to perform, and now more than ever it’s important to have an agent who’s clued up on all of this – please don’t assume that your current agent is on top of things.

If you’d like to discuss anything in more detail or see how we can help, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to help ensure that you’re compliant and prepared.

SEVENOAKS HOUSE

Situated in the idyllic and highly desirable town of Sevenoaks, this five-bed replacement dwelling provided our design studio with a unique canvas on which to build.

Our replacement dwelling, designed closely with our client’s needs and preferences in mind, is a continuation of the local country home design philosophy, but with a distinctive, modern approach.

THE PROPOSAL

The metropolitan greenbelt is a cherished location and a welcome break from the claustrophobia of London’s urban landscape. When designing this house, we wanted the architecture to complement the greenery around it, rather than overpower and dominate the land. Working within the rules and regulations of the greenbelt, we proposed a home that adds value to the local area, whilst affecting the local environment as little as possible.

In our build proposal, the building is described as a ‘contemporary replacement dwelling providing a very high-quality design, suitable for modern living standards as well as capitalizing on the nature of the site.’

To achieve our proposed goals, we first changed the orientation of the home. This change has compounding benefits; not only does this rotation allow the home owners to enjoy the natural beauty of the local woodland, but also the economic and

“By exploiting the natural characteristics of the site with our carefully considered strategies, the proposal demonstrates a clear reduction of built form in the landscape, enhancing the existing character of the site”

comfort benefits of passive solar heating. Further to this, a sky lounge and external roof terrace was added to the third storey of the construction to enable and encourage quieter moments surrounded by nature.

The bottom floor of the building is a partial basement. To reduce the footprint of the construction and ensure that this new abode doesn’t break the natural shape of the surrounding land, we designed the bottom floor in such a way that it is built into the landscape itself. To add, the roof was also designed to be flat, to ensure that the silhouette of the house is as inoffensive as possible.

A UNIQUE CHARACTER AND A PERFECT STAGE FOR UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS.

This latest project from our architectural design studio has been an exercise in reinterpreting traditional architecture and bringing it to the new millennium. The material palette chosen for this project is one made primarily of marble and limestone. These natural materials echo the stately homes dotted nearby in style and longevity.

The building in its entirety is filled with character and provides the perfect backdrop for our client’s day-to-day lives. The open-plan layout accompanied by the skybox, infinity pool and frequent placement of windows immerses the building into nature as one continuous, unobtrusive structure, without sacrificing the privacy of its inhabitants. Many of the rooms were tailored with privacy as a focus. The bedrooms, en-suites, cinema and music room allow for total privacy from the outside world if wanted.

Our design studio worked hard to produce an end result that is both versatile and breathtakingly beautiful. This new home is a wonderful addition to Sevenoaks and will accompany the silhouette of this picturesque landscape for many years to come.
