Surrey Hills International Music Festival (SHIMF) has announced the programme for its 2025 season which will be the 16th edition of the much-loved classical music festival that, each Spring, brings world-class musicians to perform in beautiful venues across the Surrey Hills.
Richmond Park was originally a deerhunting park, and still has 300 red deer and 350 fallow deer. When Charles I moved his court to Richmond Palace to avoid the plague in London, in 1625, he turned his manor into a deer park with herds of fallow and red deer. The park was enclosed with an 8 mile long brick wall in 1637. Most of the wall that still encloses Richmond park is the original. The Royal deer have been maintained in Richmond ever since.

WEST HORSLEY PLACE
The brickwork outside of West Horsley Place hides a secret.
The symmetry, the orange brick arches, and the Gothic doorway speak of a Georgian age. However, it is in fact a façade; a brick wall put up in the 1650s to disguise an old-fashioned timber building. Something that the Trust’s founder, the late Bamber Gascoigne, called a ‘glorious sham’.
West Horsley Place is far more ancient, with some beams dating to 1382 and wings of the manor first erected in 1425. The house, which was a private residence until 2015, has had wings built, knocked down, built over or extended multiple times over its lifetime, leaving a fascinating and charming building, displaying multiple layers of construction and architectural styles.
With over 600 years of stories to explore, the West Horsley Place Trust is using its monthly Open Days to bring history to life for visitors. Throughout 2025, each Open Day will discover a different period with something to snare your senses and take you back in time, including historical food, music and dancing. Historical interpretation specialists will be displaying clothes, weaponry and more, while they chat to visitors about the people of the past.
The next Open Day is on Sunday, February 23rd. In the month of Valentines, they will be dancing the day away Regency style! So, if you have ever watched Pride and Prejudice and looked on in envy as Elizabeth moves across the dance floor with Mr Darcy, now is your chance!
Watch a display or get involved yourself with a workshop. You’ll be taught some of the lively dances of the Regency era. Catch up with a cotillion, and queue up for a quadrille. You can also taste the era with “Jane’s Historical Kitchen,” who will be serving tasters of the canapés and cakes which would have been in a Regency ballroom.
On Sunday, March 30th, the Manor House will be heading further backwards in time to explore the extremely popular and ever-fascinating Tudor age. It was recently discovered that the building was larger in the time of Henry VIII and that he not only owned it but used it as a personal residence for hunting and feasting. Costumed interpretation specialists will be wandering the halls in their finery ready to answer your questions, there will be a talk from the author of 1000 Tudor People and storytelling sessions. Matisse: Drawing with Scissors
Saturday 8 February 2025 - Sunday 11 May 2025. Lightbox Gallery, Woking
The French painter, sculptor and designer, Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was one of the 20th century’s most influential artists. His vibrant works are celebrated for their extraordinary richness and luminosity of colour and his spectacular paper cutouts were his final triumph.
Matisse: Drawing with Scissors, a Hayward Gallery Touring exhibition from the Southbank Centre - opening at Lightbox Gallery on Saturday 8 February (to Sunday 11 May 2025) - features 35 posthumous prints of the famous cut-outs that he produced in the last four years of his life, when confined to his bed. The exhibition includes many of his iconic images, such as The Snail and the Blue Nudes.
Matisse continued creating highly original works into his eighties. For his cut-outs he used paper, hand-painted with gouache, which he carved into with scissors: ‘the paper cut-out allows me to draw in the colour … Instead of drawing the outline and putting the colour inside it…I draw straight into the colour’. The colours he used were so strong that he was advised by his doctor to wear dark glasses.
The lithographic reproductions in this exhibition are taken from a special double issue of Verve, a review of art and literature, published by Matisse’s friend, the critic and fine art publisher Tériade, in 1958, four years after Matisse’s death. The
publication was planned during Matisse’s lifetime and the first lithographic plates were prepared under his direction a few days before he died.
Matisse began his working life as a lawyer, before going to Paris to study art in 1890. At first strongly influenced by the Impressionists, he soon created his own style, using brilliant, pure colours, and started making sculptures as well as paintings. In 1905 he and his colleagues were branded the Fauves (wild beasts) because of their unconventional use of colour, and it was during this time that he painted his celebrated Luxe, Calme et Volupté (Luxury, Tranquillity and Delight).
‘There is no gap between my earlier pictures and my cut-outs’, Matisse wrote; ‘I have only reached a form reduced to the essential through greater absoluteness and greater abstraction’.
Matisse: Drawing with Scissors will be a longstanding touring exhibition, taking residency at further locations following its presentation at Lightbox Gallery. These locations will be announced at a later date.

It now welcomes well over 30,000 visitors a year, visiting from all corners of the globe. It is open every day, all year round (sometimes even Christmas Day!) and is worth seeing at any time of year as the landscape evolves with the seasons.

The Deer of Richmond Park
Richmond Park was originally a deerhunting park, and still has 300 red deer and 350 fallow deer.
When Charles I moved his court to Richmond Palace (no longer standing) to avoid the plague in London, in 1625, he turned his manor into a deer park with herds of fallow and red deer. The park was enclosed with an 8 mile long brick wall in 1637. Most of the wall that still encloses Richmond park is the original. The Royal deer have been maintained in Richmond ever since.
The deer have played a major role in the Park’s history and have shaped the landscape too. Their special grassland habitat depends on grazing and the parkland trees have a distinctive ‘browse line’ as the deer eat all the leaves and twigs growing below about 1.5 metres. Deer grazing also prevents tree seedlings from growing, keeping the grassland open. For young trees to survive they need to be
protected against damage from deer antlers for some 50 years.
During the autumn the deer ‘rut’ (breeding season) takes place. The red stags and fallow bucks compete for females (known as hinds and does respectively). At this time, the large males roar, bark and clash antlers in a spectacular way in an attempt to fight off rivals and to attract as many females as possible. The young are born mainly in June, and are hidden by their mothers amongst the bracken and long grass. Females and their young are very vulnerable and sensitive to disturbance at this time Herds of red and fallow deer roam freely within much of the park. The herds are culled in November to keep numbers manageable and the park population healthy.
The British Deer Society and the Deer Initiative of England and Wales, who are regarded as the main welfare organizations dealing with the welfare and management of deer nationally, recognise that parkland deer numbers must be managed and that removal of some of the deer is necessary each year to keep populations at acceptable levels.
The keeping of deer in enclosed English parkland has a long heritage. Although many ancient parks were originally maintained for hunting purposes, in recent times it is recognised that the deer herds of the Royal Parks in London are an integral part

V&A presents a major exhibition
Cartier Jewels and Watches worn by Queen Elizabeth II, Grace Kelly & Rihanna
12 April 2025 – 16 November 2025
The V&A will stage the UK’s first major exhibition in almost 30 years dedicated to Cartier jewels and watches, exploring how the Maison became an unparalleled force in the jewellery and watch world.
Featuring more than 350 objects, the exhibition will chart the evolution of the house’s legacy of art, design and craftsmanship since the turn of the 20th century. It was at that point that the three grandsons of founder Louis-François set out to create the first globally recognised jewellery house, establishing branches in Paris, London and New York.
With an enviable client list of royalty and aristocracy, Cartier became known as ‘The Jeweller of Kings and the Kings of Jewellers’ and later broadened its appeal thanks to the devotion of leading creatives from the worlds of cinema, music and fashion.
The exhibition will include precious jewels and showstopping objects, historic gemstones, iconic watches and clocks from the V&A and Cartier Collection, as well as previously unseen drawings from the V&A and Cartier archives, together with works lent by His Majesty The King from the Royal Collection, major UK and international museums, and private collections.
Highlights will include:
• The Williamson Diamond brooch commissioned by Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 featuring the rare 23.6 carat pink Williamson diamond
• The Scroll Tiara commissioned in 1902 and worn to the coronation of Elizabeth II, and by Rihanna on the cover of W magazine in 2016
• A rose clip brooch (1938) worn by Princess Margaret at her sister’s coronation
• Grace Kelly’s engagement ring (1956), from the Monaco Princely Palace Collection, that she wore in her final film High Society (1956)
• A selection of Cartier timepieces that embody its unique and pioneering approach to watchmaking, including the Crash wristwatch, designed by Cartier London (1967)
Across three main sections the exhibition will explore the creativity of Cartier and the emergence of its signature style, the legacy of its technical ingenuity and craftsmanship, as well as its sophisticated approach to image-making and maintaining its legacy and relevance in a changing world.

NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY
The Face Magazine: Culture Shift
From 20 February 2025 – 18 May 2025
Launching the National Portrait Gallery’s 2025 programme, The Face Magazine: Culture Shift will be the first major museum exhibition to focus on the iconic portraiture and fashion photography captured for The Face, a cult British magazine that has shaped the tastes of the nation’s youth.
Featuring photographs, magazine covers and spreads and film, the exhibition will use the medium of portraiture to explore The Face’s monumental influence throughout the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, as well as its continued impact on the publishing landscape and the worlds of fashion and music. The exhibition will include images created by some of the era’s most talented photographers, stylists and models, many of which have never been shown outside of the pages of the magazine. The Face was started by Nick Logan, formerly editor of New Musical Express (NME) in the 1970s and creator of teen music magazine, Smash Hits.
The Face Magazine: Culture Shift will open with a selection of portraits and magazine spreads from The Face’s early years and the increasing overlap between music and fashion, with innovative graphic design by Neville Brody, who was the magazine’s Art Director from 1981 to 1986. The magazine’s
power to promote music talent, from unknown faces to turbocharging careers, was on the rise, and photographers were given the space and freedom to create iconic images.
While initially billed as ‘Rock’s Final Frontier’, The Face pushed its influence beyond music, spearheading the influence of stylists in magazine photography, and it was soon proclaiming itself ‘The World’s Best Dressed Magazine’. Ray Petri, one of the most influential stylists of the 1980s, redefined men’s fashion within the pages of The Face. He assembled a group of west London creatives and worked frequently with photographer Jamie Morgan. Petri and Morgan’s images were radical because of the fashion they featured –which drew inspiration from an eclectic range of references – but also because they created space for black models within the fashion industry. Their first cover together, featuring BritishBurmese model Nick Kamen (Winter Sports,

Jamie Morgan, January 1984), was a key moment in The Face’s history, with fashion, photography and the discovery of a new face all coalescing to create an image that defined a new zeitgeist. Within two years of appearing on the cover of The Face, Nick Kamen was starring in one of Levi’s best-known advertising campaigns.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, The Face magazine adopted an aesthetic and style that was in line with the emergence of acid house music, a new clubbing scene and the subsequent explosion of rave culture.
As photography evolved in the Nineties from analogue to digital formats, The Face was at the forefront of exploring the creative potential of new image manipulation programs, which resulted in bold, colourful and ‘hyperreal’ images, which pushed fashion photography in a new direction – a return to glamour, but with a contemporary twist. Innovation was spearheaded by the magazine’s new Art Director, Lee Swillingham (one of the co-curators of this exhibition), who recognised that advances made in digital post-production technology offered photographers more creative potential.
Fashion stories from 1994 featured models who were photographed in the studio, before the photographs were digitally montaged onto vividly coloured stock slides from image libraries. Later in the decade, Elaine Constantine moved away from digital technologies to photograph her images in-camera, using flash to create intense and
vibrant colours that evoked nostalgic memories of carefree teenage rebellion.
Throughout the magazine’s history, The Face allowed photographers and stylists a platform to experiment and push fashion and portrait photography in exciting new directions.
The Face ceased publication in 2004, but fifteen years later, the publication was relaunched in print and online, returning to a radically altered publishing landscape. Navigating this new terrain, The Face has continued Logan’s original vision for a disruptive, creative and inclusive magazine, championing fresh talent in photography, fashion, music and graphic design, and the exhibition will close with work from this new chapter.

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS GUIDE
FEBRUARY 2025
THE FINEST SCHOOLS IN THE UK
PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS
The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions
Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.
Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.
The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.
“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”
In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.
The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.
Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.
“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.
The Girl on The Train
In November, Cranleigh School treated audiences to a very different theatrical experience. The production of ‘The Girl on the Train’, adapted from the novel by Paula Hawkins and inspired by the style of theatre practitioner Katie Mitchell, incorporates both live theatrical performances with aspects of ‘live camera’ to bring focus on to the female perspective of a narrative. As such, audiences watched in surprise as cast members seamlessly transitioned from character to camera operator with a huge cinema screen hung above the set providing a unique viewing experience. This form of theatre would be easily deemed technically and logistically too complex for a full scale twohour school production and so it was a huge undertaking for all involved both in the cast and creative team. Director of Drama, Emily McGhee was delighted the production has been nominated for The National School Theatre Awards in four categories, including Best Play.
In this production the central female perspective was Rachel Watson, a tortured soul who, on her daily commute, catches glimpses of a seemingly perfect couple from the window of her train. After believing she has witnessed something terrible she becomes embroiled in a murder investigation where she quickly moves from informant to suspect. This hugely challenging role was captured with all of the necessary depth and intricacies demonstrating maturity beyond her years by Sophia Ferguson who is nominated for Best Actress.
The supporting cast, delivering outstanding performances with audiences gripped from the outset, have been tipped for Best Ensemble. Not only did they have to master their roles they also had to manoeuvre carefully around the space to capture the shots necessary from behind the
lens which led to a sequence not dissimilar to a choreographed dance routine.
Special mention must also be made to those involved behind scenes which included students from the school’s technical theatre group, who are specially trained by Cranleigh’s Theatre Manager, Peter Humphreys, in various theatrical disciplines to enable them to run the school productions.
Archie Leaver stood out as Deputy Stage Manager alongside Maisy Brewer who is nominated for an award for her sound design. She composed an original score for the entire two-hour performance which wouldn’t have been out of place in the film itself. Her design perfectly underscored and enhanced moments of rising tension and supported the delivery of the cinematic quality of the overall production.
While many professional production companies would shy away from a show which involved multi-purpose sets, complex camera operation and live video editing, the cast and crew at Cranleigh School rose to the occasion and delivered a show which far exceeded expectations and provided audiences with a performance unlike anything they had ever seen. The production showcased Cranleigh’s ambition to be known for its performing arts and for its drama productions which seek to redefine ‘school plays’ and transcend expectations to create full scale, professional experiences for students and audiences which wouldn’t look out of place in the West End. cranleigh.org

Benefits of the independent school
With options ranging from boarding schools to modern alternative curricula, there is almost certainly a school to suit each and every child. Here are some of the reasons why parents are choosing to give their children the unique experience of private school and why it’s worth the financial investment.
ENRICHED ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES
One of the accepted benefits of private schools is that they provide exceptional and challenging educational experiences through extracurricular activities, Advanced Placement courses, and the International Baccalaureate programme, just to name a few. The IB programme focuses on school work and on developing you as a whole person. Private school students constantly score top marks on standardized tests and college entrance exams, and many schools have a 100 per cent rate of students attending their university of choice.
CONTROLLED CLASS SIZES
A comprehensive study on class size made by educational researchers Bruce Biddler and David Berliner in 2002 showed that the smaller the class size, the better the average student performs on academic achievement tests. The gains from smaller class sizes are stronger the longer a child is exposed to them. Private schools vary greatly in size, but
depending on their teaching style, almost all focus on the importance of small class sizes to individually help students’ weak areas and advance their strengths.
DEDICATED TEACHERS
In a study completed by the Fraser Institute in 2007, 91 per cent of parents surveyed said the dedication of the teachers was their main reason for choosing private school. Instructors are both qualified and passionate about their subjects, often holding advanced degrees in their field. Within the tight-knit school community, students have close relationships with their teachers who commonly act as role models. In addition, small class sizes make staff members more readily available for extra help or to further challenge individual students.
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
Private schools are built around open communication between parents and administration, and they make it a priority to involve parents in the community. From frequent parent-teacher meetings, social events such as parent breakfasts and family camping weekends, and the participation of parent committees in fundraising initiatives, families become an integral part of the child’s education. This common ground also helps strengthen parent-child relationships.
A SAFE ENVIRONMENT
Private schools have reputations for maintaining high standards for discipline and respect. Lower
“91 per cent of parents surveyed said the dedication of the teachers was their main reason for choosing private school”
staff-to-student ratios allow for more effective observation and control of school grounds. The strong sense of community found in private schools also discourages dangerous behaviour. In the Fraser Institute study, around 72 per cent of parents surveyed with children in the private school system strongly agreed that their school was safe, which greatly improves the quality of the child’s educational experience and achievement. The discipline they learn also improves their rates for success in postsecondary education when they are in control of their class attendance and achievement.
AMPLE RESOURCES
At private schools, you’ll find incredible resources to support student learning in the classroom, sports field, art studio, and beyond. Quality resources provide students with the opportunity to fully explore their interests and talents.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
While academics remain the priority for most private schools, many also place a strong focus on a wellrounded education and encourage participation in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, arts or clubs. This involvement helps stimulate students in their studies, as noted in a study at Stanford University that found that students involved in the arts are more motivated to learn and are three times more likely to win a school attendance award. Extracurricular activities can provide a muchneeded break from the stresses of academics while developing skills and engaging in valuable social situations.
“At private schools, you’ll find incredible resources to support student learning in the classroom, sports field, art studio, and beyond”
DEVELOPMENT FOR TODAY’S AND TOMORROW’S WORLD
Private schools go beyond offering the mandatory subjects required by provincial curriculum; they can offer students a wide range of specializations including arts programs, athletics, maths and science. Private schools are responsible for producing many leaders in politics, business and society, with a history of adapting quickly to changes in technology and culture. And today, they are also sought by parents of children with special needs such as behaviour problems or learning disabilities.
Nurturing Resilient Minds
When selecting a school, parents increasingly value not just academic prowess but also the school’s dedication to pupils’ emotional and mental wellbeing. Traditionally, pastoral care focused on mental health, addressing issues as they arose. However, the 21st-century challenges faced by pupils necessitate a broader approach. The concept of mental fitness has emerged, emphasising a proactive and dynamic pursuit of mental strength, resilience, and adaptability.
Beyond academic pressures, today’s pupils grapple with a rapidly changing world, unprecedented societal expectations, and the omnipresence of digital connectivity. Traditional models of pastoral care, centred on reactive responses to mental health concerns, are revealing their limitations in addressing the multifaceted challenges pupils encounter. A reactive approach may also inadvertently stigmatise mental health concerns, perpetuating the notion that seeking support is reserved for times of crisis. Mental fitness, on the other hand, is about proactive wellbeing.
In response to this changing landscape, Feltonfleet’s Wellbeing Curriculum has evolved to transcend crisis intervention, and instead seek to actively instil practices fostering mental fitness. This includes resilience-building, emotional intelligence development, cognitive flexibility, and cultivating a growth mindset.
By dedicating curriculum time to mental health, mindfulness, mental fitness and elucidating the workings of the brain, we highlight the significance of individual wellbeing.
Mindfulness is a core component, equipping pupils to respond skilfully to the present moment, with open-minded curiosity and acceptance. Pupilled ‘mindful moments’ have become a daily ritual, aiding concentration and settling thoughts.
Wellbeing Wednesdays and a comprehensive co-curricular enrichment program at Feltonfleet further support emotional management and personal growth, as well as provide platforms for self-exploration and identify formation. Mixedage activities foster a sense of community and leadership among older pupils while easing younger pupils’ transition beyond the classroom.
Effective social tracking and comprehensive assessments by a dedicated pastoral team is at the heart of our philosophy, enabling a deep understanding of each pupil’s learning and emotional needs, and thus tailored support for each individual. This approach enables discreet steering and timely support for any emerging mental health risks, which might otherwise remain concealed.
Moving forwards, the imperative for schools is clear - to prepare pupils not only for academic success but also to be mentally agile and emotionally robust. As educators, our responsibility extends beyond reacting to mental health concerns; we must actively cultivate the mental strengths that empower pupils to face the challenges of tomorrow. It is crucial that these efforts continue to evolve and align with the emphasis placed on academic development. The wellbeing of pupils is not a mere complement but an integral determinant of their overall growth and ability to thrive in an ever-changing world.

How Notre Dame School Cobham Helps Every Girl Thrive
At Notre Dame School Cobham, we believe education is about more than just academic success—it’s about unlocking potential, fostering confidence and providing every girl with the tools to excel in her chosen path. As an all-girls through-school, we create an environment where students flourish, achieving outstanding results while developing the skills and self-belief needed for lifelong success.
A true measure of a school’s impact is the progress its students make beyond expectations. Notre Dame ranks in the top 12% nationally for ‘value added’ – a metric that reflects the difference between predicted and actual outcomes. Our exceptional teachers nurture individual talents, ensuring that every girl, regardless of her starting point, reaches her full potential. Whether in academics, arts, sport, or leadership, we focus on the unique strengths of each student, helping them to thrive.
Research from the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA) highlights the benefits of single-sex education, particularly in STEM subjects. Girls in all-girls schools are 2.7 times more likely to take Further Maths A-level, more than twice as likely to study Physics or Computer Science, and significantly more likely to choose Biology and Chemistry. At Notre Dame, our innovative curriculum and dedicated Innovation Space inspire students to challenge stereotypes, think critically and embrace opportunities in STEM and beyond.
Girls thrive when they feel seen, supported, and encouraged. The GSA’s research confirms that single-sex environments foster greater confidence

and emotional intelligence. At Notre Dame, we cultivate these qualities through our ‘Big Sister Little Sister’ programme, mentoring opportunities and a strong pastoral care system. Our students leave us not only with top grades but with the resilience and leadership skills to navigate an everchanging world.
Education is about more than what happens in the classroom. We are committed to fostering social responsibility and challenging societal norms. The GSA reports that 80% of girls in member schools are educated about gender equality, with over 75% of teachers actively addressing stereotypes. At Notre Dame, we embed these principles into our ethos, empowering students to become socially conscious, ambitious and ready to make a difference.
Physical education plays a key role in our holistic approach to development. Research shows that girls in single-sex schools are significantly more likely to participate in traditionally male-dominated sports—nearly five times more likely to play cricket and 30% more likely to play football. Our extensive sports programmes encourage every girl to explore her potential, build resilience and develop a lifelong love of exercise.
For over 400 years, Notre Dame has been committed to providing a nurturing and empowering education. Our all-girls environment, combined with our exceptional value-added performance, ensures that every student leaves us equipped to succeed in whichever path she chooses. How to find the perfect NUDE LIPSTICK for every skin tone
From the undertone to the finish –here’s how to find your perfect nude lipstick. By
Lara Owen
Finding the perfect nude lipstick is no small feat. It’s the holy grail of everyone’s make-up bag, and can make a look go from pared-back to perfectly polished.
Whether you reach for a deep matte like Zendaya, a satin finish like Hailey Bieber or a corally nude like Nicole Kidman – the formula, shade and staying power require a lot of thought when finding the perfect nude.
So, to demystify the process, celebrity makeup maestros share their top tips for finding your perfect nude lipstick.
How to find your skin’s undertone
The first step when finding your perfect nude is to determine your skin’s undertone.
If you have cool undertones, this will be
evident through bluish or purple veins. Oriflame‘s make-up artist and trainer Natalia Trepashko recommends colder pinks like mauve or berry.
“Avoid overly yellow or orange tones as they can clash,” she says.
Those with warm undertones, who have golden or peachy hues with green veins, should look for peach, caramel or brownish nudes.
If you’re neutral, you’re in luck, as it means the world’s your oyster when it comes to nude lips.
“If you’re neutral, veins are not distinctly green or blue,” says Trepashko. “You have more flexibility, and both cool and warm nudes can work – most likely taupe or beige is good on you.”
If you still can’t tell – it’s best to do a swatch of each in person.
“It’s always wise to swatch a few nude lipsticks side by side first before trying any one,” says BBC Glow Up judge and MAC Cosmetics director of make-up artistry, Dominic Skinner. “Then try on the one that has the same undertone as yourself to see if it fits.”
“Those with warm undertones, who have golden or peachy hues with green veins, should look for peach, caramel or brownish nudes”
The perfect nude for darker skin tones
The deeper your skin tone, the trickier it may be to find the perfect nude, as some shades are more likely to wash you out.
“Don’t be afraid to go richer and deeper,” says Skinner. “Some plums, berries and copper-toned lip colours can compliment deeper skin tones.”
Opting for nudes that lean into more brown than pink undertones can better compliment your skin tone – but personal preference is key – so don’t be afraid to experiment.
Matte, satin or gloss?
The finish of a nude lip depends on the look you’re wanting to go for.
“Matte is for bold, statement make-up; satin is for a more balanced, classy vibe; and gloss adds youthful freshness,” says Trepashko.
If you’re looking for a look that will carry you through from day-to-night, Skinner recommends a satin finish.
“Nudes look great in any finish but personally I love a satin finish – not too shiny and not too matte.”
Balancing a nude lip with the rest of your make-up
It may sounds ridiculous – because isn’t a nude lip supposed to match any make-up look?
That’s where you’re wrong. Balancing your eye and cheek colour to your lip plays a huge part in ensuring a flattering nude look.
“Choose a nude lipstick close to your natural lip colour to avoid competing with strong eye or cheek looks,” says Trepashko.
Skinner suggests working backwards. “Start with the bold feature first, whether it’s your eyes or cheeks. This helps you gauge how nude the lip should be.
“You might need to add an additional lip liner to the look to help make the lips stand out, without drawing attention away from the bolder eye or cheek.”
“Nudes look great in any finish”
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“The biggest mistake is thinking nude equals pale,” says Skinner. “Nude isn’t about matching your skin colour; it’s about creating harmony.”
Like Skinner, Trepashko warns against going too light when choosing a nude. “The best nude matches your own lip colour,” she says. “Always exfoliate and moisturise beforehand, and don’t forget a matching lip liner for definition.”
But make sure the lip liner isn’t too dark, as professional make-up artist and founder of Ayu Cosmetics Suzie O’Neill says, “Ensure that your lip liner is the same shade as lipstick or one shade darker.
“You do not want your lipstick coming off and being left with a dark outline with no lipstick! Take a look at your lip conditions too – choosing a matte lipstick will dry out lips that are already dry.”
And don’t forget about the weather, as Skinner notes, “Your skin tone and undertone can change in different seasons, so you should consider changing your nude lip colour.
“You might need something more warmer in summer to compliment your tan or something cooler in winter to match the cooler light we get in winter.”

PADEL TENNIS
The sport that’s taking the UK by storm
If you haven’t heard of padel tennis yet, it’s only a matter of time. This fast-paced blend of tennis and squash is the fastest growing sport in the world, attracting players of all ages and abilities. Accessible, sociable, and great fun, padel is quickly becoming the go-to sport for fitness enthusiasts and casual players alike.
So, what is Padel Tennis?
Imagine a sport that combines the racket skills of both tennis and squash. Padel is played on a smaller court, encased by glass walls that also play a key part in the strategy of the game. Originally from Mexico, padel tennis is now played by over 30 million people worldwide, the sport is booming and has never been more popular. It’s a sport favoured by celebrities including David Beckham, Lionel Messi, Andy Murray, Serena Williams and Antonio Banderas.
Unlike tennis, it’s easy to pick up for beginners, while still offering plenty of challenge for experienced players. It is nearly always played in doubles which by nature makes it a very social sport, perfect for families, friends, and community groups. One thing is for sure - once played forever addicted!
The compact space and innovative rules—such as being able to play shots off the walls—make for fast-paced, tactical games that are as exciting to watch as they are to play.
Indoor padel courts are the perfect solution to the Great British weather
In Europe padel tends to be played outdoors, although it’s interesting to see that all major professional tournaments are held indoors. But living in the UK the unpredictable weather makes
“Originally from Mexico, padel tennis is now played by over 30 million people worldwide”
outdoor padel a challenge; indoor courts provide the perfect solution, allowing players to enjoy the game without worrying about rain or chilly winds.
One company is at the forefront of indoor padel – The Padel Hub currently has 4 clubs in Slough, Crawley, North London and the newly opened Epsom club, with 2 more opening in Fleet and Reading in early 2025 plus many more to come in their rapid expansion plans. The Padel Hub is certainly changing the face of padel in the UK with their all inclusive club approach featuring state of the art indoor courts and onsite gyms in partnership with world leading specialist Technogym. But they don’t stop at fitness, they have fully embraced the social side of padel with lively bar and café areas that always seem to be buzzing with pre and post match chat. Their model brilliantly appeals to both experienced players and complete beginners with coaching, group lessons, social mix ins, competitive tournaments plus they also offer a free ‘Intro to Padel’ session to anyone looking to investigate the sport for the first time –how refreshing!
If you’re looking for a new way to stay active, connect with others, or simply try something different, padel might be just the sport for you. As its popularity soars, there’s never been a better time to get involved. padelhub.uk

Nazanin Idelji started her Pilates journey over 15 years ago after suffering from severe back pain for most of her teenage years, a result of 2 prolapsed discs. Starting Pilates in her late 20’s she realised through the mentoring of an incredible teacher the physical and mental benefits of Pilates. She still has 2 prolapsed discs which to this day have not been operated on but they don’t cause her any pain or restrict her from enjoying life and movement. She puts this all down to Pilates.
Nazanin went onto to train to become a certified Pilates instructor with Body Control Pilates. Through combining teachings from both her instructor and professional school, as well as research and practise, she has created private classes that help with body reshaping, weight management, back, neck and shoulder pain, pre and post-natal support, and management and prevention of arthritis. She also works with pro-athletes to help their performance and has created a program for women going through the menopause.

How to master the ‘no make-up’ beauty look
Here’s how to make your skin fresh and flawless with minimal make-up this winter. By Lara Owen
There have been several variations of the ‘no make-up’ make-up look over the years – from fluffy brows to brown mascara. The one consistency to a ‘no make-up’ make-up look though, is pore-less, perfect-looking skin. From the best products for your skin type to tried-and-tested techniques, leading make-up artists detail how to master the ‘no make-up’ make-up look this winter.
What is ‘no make-up’ make-up?
‘Glass skin’ was one of 2024’s biggest make-up trends, inspired by the Korean beauty trends that placed the emphasis on skincare, rather than make-up.The clue is in the name, but at its core, ‘no make-up’ make-up celebrates the skin’s natural texture while offering subtle enhancements. “It’s all about looking fresh, healthy, and perfected without super visible or obvious makeup,” says Stila brand manager, Sascha Jackson. “The key is to create the illusion that you’re wearing little to no make-up while enhancing your features subtly. It’s about
fresh, dewy and effortless skin,” says professional make-up artist and co-founder of Ella & Jo, Charlene Flanaghan. Think blurred imperfections and satin finishes: your skin but better.
How to prep the skin
When you’re wanting the appearance of ‘no make-up’ skin, the emphasis is on the skincare –not the make-up. As with any make-up look, you should start with a clean base, having cleansed the skin and patted it completely dry, following with hydration. “Using a serum, moisturiser and face mask will help hydrate your skin, smooth its texture, and leave your face feeling soft,” says Boots beauty specialist Leanna Zaman. “Once you’ve prepped your skin, your make-up will blend more seamlessly, creating a flawless look.” While hydration is key, ensuring your base is free from pollution will help create a more even finish, “Exfoliate to remove impurities and create a smooth surface,” says professional make-up artist Natalia Trepashko at Oriflame Cosmetics. It’s important to exfoliate using chemical exfoliants rather than physical – which cause abrasions on the skin. Some cleansers have chemical exfoliants in them, such as AHA and BHA, which help clean and strip the skin of excess pollutants.
What type of foundation to pick
When achieving ‘no make-up’ skin, you want to opt for the lightest coverage possible. This means a sheer foundation or a tinted moisturiser, accompanied by small amounts of concealer for breakouts or dark under-eyes. If you’re opting for a foundation, the key to making it look natural lies less in the shade and more in the undertone, “The secret to a flawless base is to pick a shade that complements your skin’s undertone,” says Trepashko. “If you are more olive-skinned, go for a yellow undertone, if you’re fairer, choose a pink undertone.”
How to subtly conceal
The tick to blurring spots without caking on too much concealer is to spot-correct. Spot-

SYNCHRONIZED MULTI-RECOVERY COMPLEX, £65
correcting is when you apply a tinted concealer to help neutralise unwanted discoloration. Colourcorrecting palettes include green shades for redness, yellow for purple under eyes and pink for brown age spots. “Spot-correcting instead of targeting the whole face at once gives a more natural finish,” says Jackson. “Start with the areas which are giving you the most concerns: blemishes, under-eye dark circles, redness – then work from there.” It’s important to ensure that the areas made up of more delicate skin – such as the under eyes and lips – are moisturised and hydrated before applying product, as otherwise the concealer will settle within fine lines. “Let the concealer dry slightly before blending for fuller coverage,” says Zaman “and for a lighter finish, dust a small amount with a fluffy brush”
How to avoid ‘blush blindness’
While 2024 saw blush and facial flush grow in popularity, a TikTok trend known as ‘blush blindess’ meant not everyone was applying it naturally. “Cheek tints give skin a radiant sheen and create a subtle, natural flush,” explains Zaman. “Besides their dewy finishes, cream blushes tend to be more buildable than powder, and are key to a more natural-looking effect.”
When it comes to application, Zaman recommends applying a liquid or cream blush with
a liquid highlighter to create a soft, natural glow: “I like to use a cream or liquid highlighter when I apply cream blush as it helps the products melt together. “It makes the highlight a lot softer and more natural.” Jackson says the key to making blush and highlighter blend into the skin, as opposed to sitting on top of it, is to use your fingers.“Apply with a soft brush or fingertips,” says Jackson. “Using this under foundation helps to give the illusions of a true ‘lit from within’ glow as opposed to a heavy strobe or highlighter.”
Activewear trends to sport in 2025
Here are the activewear trends to get you motivated this year. By Lara Owen
For many of us, one of our New Years resolutions is to get moving a little more.
Now more than ever, activewear needs to be just as fashionable as it is functional, with sportswear bleeding more and more into people’s everyday attire.
No longer reserved solely for the gym, good activewear should look just as good on the treadmill as under a trench coat.
And with more celebrities releasing their own sportswear collections – such as Khloe
Kardashian’s recent range with Fabletics and Hailey Bieber’s collection with Fila – gym gear that looks as good as it feels is crucial.
So, from Pilates pants to Eighties unitards –here are the activewear trends to look out for in 2025, according to experts.
WIDE-LEG LEGGINGS
While wide-leg yoga pants entered the loungewear sphere in 2024, their success has seen designers keen to build on the trend, with wide-leg leggings following suit.
“There’s a growing shift away from classic leggings to a wider variety of pant styles for activities such as Pilates and yoga, embracing volume and exaggerated shapes,” says BAM‘s head of design, Natalie O’Connell. “Expect to see silhouettes like wide-leg and barrel-leg yoga pants gaining popularity.”
This trend builds on last year’s love for relaxed silhouettes, blending comfort and style. Becoming the go-to over tracksuit bottoms and slim-line leggings, wide-leg leggings will be seen just as much at the gym as on your supermarket shop.
Providing unrestricted movement, these leggings double as stylish, off-duty wear when paired with sweatshirts or oversized knits.
TURN BACK TIME WITH VARSITY-PREP
Miu Miu’s 2024 runway looks helped cement the preppy aesthetic in the fashion sphere, and in 2025, this varsity look is now bleeding into our activewear, bringing a fresh sense of nostalgia to classic gymwear.
“Stripes and colour blocking will tap into the varsity trend, complemented by yacht
“Now more than ever, activewear needs to be just as fashionable as it is functional”
club-inspired graphics and embroideries,” says The Couture Club‘s product lead, Ashley McPherson.
This Ivy-League look inspired by the vintage Ralph Lauren catalogues of the Nineties will also show up in the trending colour palette. “We expect bold pops of colour – navy, vibrant blues, emerald green and butter yellow – to play a key role,” says McPherson.
BURGUNDY AND BEYOND
2024 saw chocolate brown and burgundy dominate Pilates studios and gym floors, but 2025 is all about evolving. With ‘Mocha Mousse’ being named Pantone’s colour for 2025, “chocolate brown remains a staple for us – now considered a core colour due to its versatility,” says McPherson.
“However, burgundy has been the standout colour this season, evolving into deeper plum tones as we move into 2025.”
While these warm and rich colours are set to reign supreme, bright pastels are also on the rise for spring and summer.
“For SS25, expect to see pinks, lilacs, lemon yellows and a new shade ‘blueberry milk’,” says O’Connell.
These hues offer a fresh and uplifting take on gymwear and are sure to motivate you in the darker months.
EIGHTIES LIGHTWEIGHT LAYERING
While the 2010s saw leggings and sports bra co-ords become the go-to gym style, for 2025, unitards and layering reminiscent of the Eighties is predicted to be big.
“Activewear is increasingly about layering versatile pieces like lightweight jackets, oversized sweats and breathable long-sleeve tops over leggings or yoga pants,” says O’Connell.
Texture is also becoming big to add depth and dimension to your gym outfits, with waffle knits, ribbed fabrics, and brushed finishes adding depth and dimension. “Playing with proportion, length, and texture can create looks that make you feel fabulous,” says McPherson.
GO HIGH-TECH
Measuring our activity almost
became an addiction for many in 2024. From Oura rings to Whoop watches to Apple’s activity ring – everyday sporting technology is on the rise.
This innovative technology doesn’t stop at your fitness tracker – as activewear brands are increasingly seeking new sustainable alternatives over synthetics, which offer superior comfort and breathability while being better for the planet.
“Thermoregulating fabrics that adapt to body temperature offer cooling during intense workouts and warmth when you need it,” notes TLC Sport‘s CEO Sara Hanna. These materials include bamboo, cotton, and microfibre.
Sportswear derived from plant material and reinforced with Gore-Tex to ensure high performance and durability in all-weathers are on the up for 2025.

Chic but practical ‘work’ bags
If you’re looking to overhaul your work wardrobe this year – here’s where to start. By
Lara Owen
The new year calls for a fashion refit – especially when it comes to your workwear.
Undoubtedly, the most difficult part of the outfit to pull off is your bag, and finding something that is both stylish and practical.
“Your work bag is one of the hardest working pieces in your wardrobe,” says Fiorelli‘s handbag expert Holly Tebbutt. “So it’s important to invest in a high-quality work bag that will last you through the years.”
We hear from celebrity stylists and fashion experts on how you can find the perfect work bag that will elevate – and not deflate – your outfit.
OVERSIZED TOTE
The current trend of the season – unfortunately for our shoulders – is the oversized tote.
“Oversized totes are seeing a huge spike in popularity at the moment, which is perfect for the over-packers amongst us!” says Antler‘s managing director, Kirsty Glenne. Not only is the slouchy tote a chic nod to the boho-trend of the year, but you have easy access to all your essentials. “The only drawback with the tote style is that it can get messy quickly!” says Tebbutt. “This style is here to stay, but the addition of pockets, dividers or compartments will help keep you organised and your belongings safe on your commute.”
THE SMART BACKPACK
The material of your bag is just as important as the style, particularly when you’re looking to elevate your outfit. “Opt for high-quality materials like
leather for longevity and a professional finish,” suggests stylist and wardrobe consultant Oriona Robb. “Comfortable straps that are padded are also a must for heavy books and laptops.” Leather is certainly the most timeless choice to go for, but real leather (as opposed to vegan) can get damaged in the rain and can look scruffy quickly if not properly cared for. Alternatively, a slim Scandinavian-style backpack is an easy win. “It’s also key to have a secure section for your laptop to avoid any damage when carrying around after work,” explains ROKA London’s co-founder Emma Katz. Sandqvist, Antler and Rains are all brands that sport Nordic-inspired designs, and are slick and smart enough to use in the office but also practical with water-resistant designs and separate compartments for chargers, books and laptops.
CROSS-BODY HOLDALL
If you love the look of a tote but don’t want to forfeit your shoulders in the process, Clare Chambers, the personal brand stylist, says the solution lies in doubling up. “One of the great design features many bags now offer is multiple strap options, from holdalls that come with an additional shoulder strap, to cross-body bags designed to be able to shorten into a short undershoulder strap,” says Chambers. “This is vital to make sure your bag includes this option, so that you can have your bag securely on your shoulder and avoid the arm juggle of balancing a drink and greeting people.” Alternatively, you can go the full hog and invest in the on-trend large cross-body with just a singular strap.
Health Checks for over 50’s
As we journey through life, crossing the milestone of 50 brings about a new chapter in our health and wellness journey. With age, the body undergoes various changes, making certain health checks and screenings more vital than ever. To help inform this, we spoke to Dr Hagar El-Habti, an expert in health checks for the over 50s.
Blood Tests
Most health checks are done by taking blood and will check for a number of conditions to catch them as early as we can. In particular, we check for the biggest killers in the UK, which are:
• Heart disease
• Strokes
• Cancers
Iron levels (blood test)
This test checks for the amount of iron in the blood, which is important for the production of healthy red blood cells. It can indicate conditions like anaemia (low iron) or high iron levels, which can affect overall health.
Kidney function test (blood test)
As people age, the risk of kidney disease increases, often due to long-term conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol. These tests are
“Liver function can be affected by a lifetime of exposure to toxins, medications, or alcohol”
vital for early detection and management of kidney disease, helping to prevent further complications.
Liver function test (blood test)
Liver function can be affected by a lifetime of exposure to toxins, medications, or alcohol. These tests are important for detecting liver damage or disorders.
Cholesterol test (blood test)
Monitoring cholesterol levels is particularly important for those over 50, as the risk of heart disease and stroke increases with age.
Diabetes test (blood glucose levels)
The risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases with age so regular blood glucose testing is vital for early detection and management of diabetes, which is more common and harder to manage in older adults.
Vitamin D test (blood test)
Adequate vitamin D is essential for maintaining bone health, especially in the over-50s, who are at increased risk of osteoporosis.
Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT)
Available on the NHS, this stool test can help detect blood in the stool which is a symptom of bowel cancer.
Urine test
We will conduct a urine test to check for:
• Infections that might be treatable
• Blood in the urine, which might suggest bladder cancer or infection
• Protein in the urine, which might suggest kidney disease
Blood pressure test
This measures the pressure in your arteries as your heart pumps. High blood pressure (hypertension) is a significant risk factor for heart disease and stroke, which become more common as people age. Regular checks can help detect hypertension early, allowing for timely intervention with lifestyle changes or medication.
Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA)
A DEXA scan (commonly referred to as a bone density scan), is a medical imaging test used to measure bone density or strength which helps in the detection of osteoporosis.
TESTS FOR 50+ MEN
Prostate-specific antigen (PSA)
This is a test for the tumour marker for prostate cancer – the most common cancer in men
TESTS FOR 50+ WOMEN
Mammogram
Regular mammograms are vital for early detection of breast cancer (the most common form of cancer in women), often before it can be felt. Early detection through mammography can lead to more effective treatment and a better chance of survival.
Pap smear (cervical screening)
This test involves collecting cells from the cervix to check for cervical cancerIt’s good to note that early detection of these changes can prevent most cases of cervical cancer.
CA 125 blood test for ovarian cancer
While routine screening for ovarian cancer is not available on the NHS, the CA 125 blood test can be used if a woman is showing symptoms of ovarian cancer. It tests the level of the protein CA 125 in the blood, which can be higher in women with ovarian cancer. However, elevated levels can also be caused by other conditions, so further investigation is usually needed if high levels are detected.
It’s important to emphasise the value of a proactive approach to health. A healthy, balanced diet, exercise and good sleep are crucial to good health. Beyond understanding and undergoing various tests and screenings, the key to maintaining wellness lies in actively engaging with your health journey. This means not only adhering to recommended check-ups but also a dialogue with healthcare providers about your concerns and changes in your health.

Trend: Castlecore
For thousands of years of human history, we have seen castles as symbols of status, protection, power and most importantly (in our eyes anyway) gorgeous renderings of architectural design. The reason so many stand around the world to this day, surrounded by other modern masterpieces of construction is that they will always inspire marvel and stir curiosity. So why did we stop building
them? That we can’t answer, but what we can do is help you style your space using some mid (13th) century majesty. So for dining tables fit for royalty and lighting that would even bring illumination to the dark ages, stick around and explore with us our latest trend, Castlecore.
DOOM & GLOOM:
Creating an ambience isn’t just reliant on furniture, but the entire mood of the room. Surrounding yourself with tones that are tantalisingly downbeat often provides a subtle, yet moody, backdrop to highlight the bold and grand nature of castle life. Adorning the walls with a rich red or an overgrown green is one of the best ways to put your favourite pieces front and centre.
THE ROUND TABLE:
A seat at the table has rarely symbolically meant more than in the stories of castle courts. In this trend, large dining tables are characterised by large amounts of space for your nearest and dearest and often contain dark and distinguished wooden elements that make it a strong statement of robust interiors. Curved edges encompass the togetherness that harsh edges do not.
“Creating an ambience isn’t just reliant on furniture, but the entire mood of the room”
PERSONAL CHAMBERS:
Bedrooms. In today’s time they contain a myriad of mod-cons, but in the middle-ages they were usually focused around one thing: their namesake. The throne wasn’t the only important individual piece of furniture in a castle; a place to sleep and rest has been the cornerstone of a quintessential home since the human story began. So the exuberance of a four-poster bed, a room within a room, is the ideal way to go from bedroom to bed chamber.
A LIGHT IN THE DARK:
When we think of castles, our minds are cast to ceilings as high as the eye can see. But with tall rooms come the inevitable - tall lighting. Chandeliers have been a staple of castles since we had a word for ‘fire hazard.’ In 2025 they’re still a seriously stylish way of illuminating your space, albeit with candlelight replaced by something with a bit more longevity. However, the lack of flickering flames doesn’t mean that we need to
“A place to sleep and rest has been the cornerstone of a quintessential home since the human story began”
forgo the style that was so widely celebrated for so long. A modern day masterpiece is the pinnacle of Castlecore.
CABINET OF WONDERS:
Storage, at times, is arguably the least interesting element of interiors. It is a space merely to hold other things we cherish and prize. However, placed in the right location and paired with the correct surroundings, it takes on an entire new lease of life. Displaying your favourite objects whilst seamlessly and stylishly blending with a grandiose backdrop ironically makes a large cabinet a subtle Castlecore detail. chaplins.co.uk

OFTEN COPIED, NEVER EQUALLED
Element7 is an award winning company, supplying and installing world-class hardwood floors in all their variants, wide-plank, parquet and bespoke, both in the UK and internationally. They specialise in prime and ultra-prime residential properties, as well as exclusive commercial properties.
The stunning Benchmark range will last a lifetime (without the need for refinishing) due to its exceptionally engineered structural integrity, and the technical supremacy of the finishes.
Enjoying close working relationships with award winning architectural practices, leading interior designers, and a select number of prime residential property developers does not detract from the fact that they pride themselves on also working directly with clients.
Whether having the privilege of installing floors in one of the word’s finest residences or working in a pied-a-terre, you will always be assured of a best in class floor, installed to exemplary standards. From luxury budgets to value engineering, the team at Element7 will always deliver the optimum results.
All Element7 floors are manufactured to their uncompromising specifications exclusively in Western Europe, primarily Italy. All raw materials are sustainably sourced and either FSC
or PEFC certified. The purpose of an engineered hardwood floor is to offer complete stability, no cupping, gapping or warping of the floor in either conventionally heated or air conditioned environments, but also in more extreme environments such as floors installed over radiant under floor heating or in humid tropical climates. Only well-engineered floors such as Element7’s overcome these issues and they have never had a failed floor.
The floor finish is of course paramount. Element7’s 8 coat environmentally friendly waterbased varnish finish, cured and abraded between each coat provide not only an exceptional lifetime finish, but is undoubtedly the easiest of all finishes to clean. Cleaning the floor is easy and only requires a cotton mop and pH neutral floor soap for a whole floor clean or just a damp cloth for spot cleaning. Element7’s reputation for stunning looking floors results from every detail being carefully considered. Though many have tried to copy Element7’s unique floors, whether it’s the trademark depth of colour, the fact that the floors last a lifetime without having to be refinished, the raw materials and the grades, Element7 say “often copied, never equalled”. element7.co.uk
Sustainable Driveways from Oltco
Oltco plays its part in recycling the equivalent of over 800 million plastic straws in driveways across the UK
Oltco is the UK’s leading sustainable resin bound driveway company, transforming driveways, patios, pathways, balconies, and pool surrounds for customers across the nation.
In 2019, Oltco developed Recycle Bound, a unique solution to help tackle the growing issue of plastic waste. Since its launch, the company has recycled the equivalent of over 800 million plastic straws in its resin bound installations across the UK.
Recycle Bound is made by combining a stone blend, resin, and recycled plastic, including straws, drink bottles, and food packaging sourced from plastic recycling points. Each square metre of Recycle Bound contains the equivalent of 3,000 plastic straws. For example, a standard 50 square metre driveway would recycle approximately 150,000 plastic straws.
With an estimated 12 million tonnes of plastic entering the ocean annually, the equivalent of a rubbish truck emptying every minute, plastic pollution is having a devastating impact on marine life and ecosystems. Oltco was inspired to develop
Recycle Bound after recognising the urgent need for innovative solutions to this global issue.
While predominantly used on driveways, patios, and pathways for residential properties, Recycle Bound has also been installed in large-scale commercial projects, including some of the UK’s most prestigious hotels and attractions.
Oltco’s Co-Director, Tom Stringer, said: “We’ve been thrilled by the overwhelming response to Recycle Bound. It’s a game-changer, helping our customers create stunning outdoor spaces while addressing the critical issue of plastic waste. The surface is hard-wearing, lasts for years, and is ideal for both residential and commercial projects.
At Oltco, we’re passionate about reducing plastic waste and are proud to see the impact Recycle Bound is having across the UK.”
Oltco continues to be at the forefront of resin bound solutions, offering innovative products and exceptional customer service.

“A quirky combination of warmth, personality and eco-conscious design will be central to interiors in 2025.”
Here Tracey shares her top interior trends for 2025:

TRENDING COLOURS
Earthy and Calming Neutrals: Expect a continuation of calm tones—like sand, clay, and muted sage. These grounding colours create a sophisticated and harmonious space, ideal for those seeking tranquillity.
Warm and Inviting Tones: Warm browns, such as Pantone’s Colour of the Year Mocha Mousse, terracotta, and mustard are making a strong comeback, offering a cosy, inviting feel.
Bold Accents: Deep jewel tones such as emerald green, ruby red, and sapphire blue are likely to be big in 2025, often paired with neutrals to add vibrancy without overwhelming a space.
FABRICS AND TEXTURES
Soft, Tactile Comforts: Plush fabrics like bouclé, velvets, and chenille will continue to make spaces feel comforting and luxurious.
Natural and Sustainable Choices: There’s an emphasis on organic fabrics like cotton, linen, and wool, particularly those that are sustainably sourced.
Textured Weaves: Expect to see more intricate patterns and tactile weaves in upholstery. Patterns inspired by artisanal craftsmanship and heritage textile techniques are becoming focal points.

Vintage and Retro Influences: A nostalgic revival is underway with 70s and 80s influences making their way into modern furniture. Expect pieces with bold lines, retro patterns, and a touch of glam.
MICRO TREND HIGHLIGHTS

Colour psychology. It’s a thing. The colours we surround ourselves with have the power to significantly shape and shift our moods. Think of phrases like singing the blues or a little ray of sunshine –blues can keep things on the lower side while a burst of yellow will uplift in an instant. So how does this all look and feel in the land of tiles? It goes a little something like this…
LEAN INTO... WARM NEUTRALS FOR NOURISHMENT
Choose an earthy stone tone and its ambient
Colour Therapy: How Different Colours of Tile
Can Boost Your Mood
colouring and easy depth of tone will immediately make shoulders drop and a sense of ease wash you. Tiles like our new Hacienda in Sandstone or Studio Minaret tiles with their combination of peachy neutral, white and brown have a warmth to them too so not only will you notice your mood feeling even-tempered but they’ll leave you feeling held and nourished too. What’s not to love?
“Two colours most associated with love and romance, red and pink tiles can cause a real stir”
LEAN INTO... REDS AND PINKS FOR SENSUALITY
Two colours most associated with love and romance, red and pink tiles can cause a real stir, especially when coupled together. Earthy pinks that feel soft and safe to be around – like that in our Carnation Border Rose tile and those in our Studio Jamboree ceramics tiles (in fact called Coral) used en masse have almost a womblike feeling of tenderness but mix in bursts of berry and scarlet and the playfulness comes to the fore. See our pink and red Studio Jamboree chequerboard to catch our drift. To really up the sensual side, go for red tiles on their own and watch your mood become that bit more seductive.
LEAN INTO... GREENS FOR ENERGY
Greens – they give you a boost when you eat them and they do much the same when you live in a space with them. Green tiles like our new Athens Mosaic tiles and Studio Cassius have a freshness to them that revitalises and helps to pep up energy levels. Typically, lighter green tiles raise energy levels most but even darker forest green tiles like the Amazon finish will have a positive impact,
grounding you as well as lifting. Or go for a mix of green shades in one tile with something like Studio Minaret Green Dot.
LEAN INTO... YELLOWS FOR JOY
See things sunnyside-up with yellow tiles in your life. Colour-blocked yellow tiles like the hand painted Summer field Jamboree tiles from our Studio collection will give you a burst of positive energy even if you use them in a small sense (splashbacks and the such) but weave yellow into your decor in a more accented way with a tile like Sorrento Sabbia from the Nonna’s Kitchen collection and yellow becomes more mellow. Lemon-fresh or mustard magic, being around yellow 100% brings out the more joyful side of life.
LEAN INTO... BLUES FOR CHILL
Sure, blues are linked to melancholy but that doesn’t always have to be the case. Style a blue tile in a sombre way and if your mood is on the lower side, it may well not encourage you out to the other side. But go for a blue tile like the multicoloured Studio Souk with its powdered blue meets brown and sage green star and suddenly blue becomes about tranquility. The mix of tones shows a) how well blue gets along with other colours and b) how the companion colours take on each other’s qualities. Even deep, dark and mood navy blues like those in the Minaret Pink Dot and Studio Cosmos tile in Midnight become all about their chill out character with other colours there to temper its depths.
LEAN INTO... BLACKS FOR CONFIDENCE
And finally, to the dark side, where black tiles can trigger a hidden confidence in you. Every colour has layers to it and the effect they can have on you varies, so while black might be associated with seriousness, it also is with mystery and power which in turn result in quiet confidence. It’s something to do with black’s sleek and chic nature – one look at our statement-making East Village tiles in Nero or the slightly more subtle basketweave version will show you that. A room tiled with either of these appears sophisticated and assured, and it’s nigh-on impossible to not let that rub off on your mood so you can seize the day, head held stylishly high. capietra.com

Second-Hand Homeware Launches Online
Some of a Kind has just launched a website selling affordable secondhand and vintage homeware - www. someofakind.co.uk. They have an eclectic selection of products, including quirky candlesticks, vintage espresso sets and secondhand vases.
According to research, UK consumers are wanting to buy more second-hand homeware and shop more sustainably. 71% of consumers bought or sold used goods in 2023, with homeware proving to be the second highest category purchased behind fashion [1]. The top 2 reasons for buying second-hand items in the UK were cited as being for environmental reasons, followed by the cost of living crisis [2].
However, finding the time to shop second-hand homeware can prove difficult, as it often involves going to car boot sales, charity shops or buying off Facebook Marketplace, all of which are very time intensive to actually find something you would want in your home.
Some of a Kind have done the hard work for you, sourcing second-hand products which are in great condition, as well as being stylish and affordable.
Everything on the website is hand-picked by the owner, Charlie Ashby, who says;
“As someone who has always wanted to launch their own business, I’m excited to introduce Some of a Kind.
We are all about helping people create unique, character filled homes without compromising the
planet. I know I’m not the only one that loves having a mooch round a charity shop or car boot sale but it’s a lot of effort for sometimes very little reward.
I wanted to give people a place where they can make good choices in an easier way, whilst still being affordable.”
You can find Some of a Kind online - www. someofakind.co.uk, with products starting from £4.95, and new products dropping every month. You can also sign up to their newsletter via their website to be the first to hear about new products.
