Surrey’s Hidden Gem

For art lovers, collectors, sculptors, photographers and nature enthusiasts - The Sculpture Park in Churt is a hidden gem. From the gates you may not expect the treasures that lie within. Upon entering the 10-acre site, nestled in the heart of the Surrey Hills, you are transported into a magical world of water gardens, woodlands and incredible sculptures.

A folly nestles above a waterfall, a giant tarantula towers over a winding path and varied works of art create a myriad of photo opportunities throughout the park. Three lakes complement the park’s diverse landscape and are home to an abundance of water creatures and unusual sculptural features.

An eclectic mix of sculptures from national and international artists are on display for all to see, giving the talented artists a platform to be recognised and appreciated. From up and coming local sculptors, to well established globally recognised names, artists come from far and wide to display their work in this picturesque outdoor gallery. Visitors marvel at the sheer number, size and diversity of the works, finding something for every taste, style and budget.

The Sculpture Park features sculptors that bring in admirers year after year. Ruth Moilliet’s colourful tributes to nature, flowers and insects, James Doran-Webb’s driftwood animals in frozen, animated poses and Jonathan Loxley’s tactile stone creations all continue to gain admiration. New work arrives almost weekly, meaning there is always something new to discover. Sculptures have been created using every subject, material and style available and are displayed upon the water, amongst the bushes and high in the trees.

Biggie Chikodzai, resident Zimbabwean

sculptor, brings the largest UK exhibition of Shona sculpture to The Sculpture Park, which can be enjoyed and purchased throughout the year. This also helps to support the artists back in Africa.

Nearly all sculptures throughout The Sculpture Park and indoor gallery are available to purchase. Advice on choice, installation and delivery can be given by expert staff. So keep your eye out for the sculpture that sings to you and you could have it in your own garden by the very next day!

The park is a family business, founded in 2001 by local businessman Eddie Powell. At the time of purchase it was undeveloped land that Eddie and his team set about the mammoth task of landscaping. It now welcomes well over 30,000 visitors a year, visiting from all corners of the globe. It is open every day, all year round (sometimes even Christmas Day!) and is worth seeing at any time of year as the landscape evolves with the seasons.

111 Places In Windsor That You Shouldn’t Miss

Author of new book 111 Places In Windsor That You Shouldn’t Miss, Jonjo Maudsley shares tips for visiting the favourite royal destination.

When you think of Windsor, you think of the castle.

The Berkshire town’s central edifice has long been its star attraction and a magnet for so many posh weekend trips. Two million people a year descend upon the world’s longest continually inhabited royal residence to drink in the pomp of the maximalist state apartments, the Gothic grandeur of St George’s Chapel, and the kitsch charm of Queen Mary’s Dollhouse.

But such splendour carries an imperial price tag. The entry fee to the castle for a family of four is £99. Factor in the cost of your swish hotel and the obligatory day trip to nearby Legoland and you’re looking at a rather pricey staycation.

But there is a cheaper way to see what Windsor has to offer if you’re prepared to forsake the royal pageantry and embrace the town beyond the bastions.

Novel enterprises and adventurous initiatives are combining to help the historic market town break out from the shadow of the castle and emerge as a destination in its own right. Better still, they are making it possible to spend a weekend without busting out the privy purse.

I start my own weekend a million miles away from the castle (metaphorically) in the heart of the Vansittart Industrial Estate. Here lies the Loading Bay Café, Windsor’s first plant-based, locally sourced coffee shop de force, and an establishment that speaks to the trendiness of Windsor better

“Novel enterprises and adventurous initiatives are combining to help the historic market town break out from the shadow of the castle and emerge as a destination in its own right”

than any other.

Over a vegan BLT (plates from £8), co-founder Dean Soden proudly tells me of everything this unit is known to contain: a Thursday evening supper club; a vintage bric-a-brac market; and on this particular morning, a punk rock gig that fills the air with anti-establishment rage. In the distance, the Royal Standard flies over the castle, and I wonder if the King is ironically bopping along.

Sure, a warehouse district wouldn’t ordinarily feature on a list of Windsor’s ‘must-see’ destinations, but this may well be the epicentre of the town’s fast-changing identity. Bisected by Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s Windsor Railway Bridge, the estate has recently become home to an emerging craft brewery scene, instigated by my next destination, the Windsor & Eton Brewery.

On their sample-rich tour (webrew.co.uk; £25pp), I learn that Windsor was once a big dot on the national map of beer, a title the town is now poised to seize back. The success of Windsor & Eton Brewery has lately encouraged Indie Rabble and Two Flints to open their own taprooms beneath neighbouring arches of Brunel’s viaduct. Is it too early to call this assembly the ‘Windsor Beer Mile’? Not according to the locals.

Eager to learn more about the urban history of Windsor, I head next for a tour of the town’s parochial churches, with my first stop at St Andrew’s. Built from the same chalk upon which his fortification was plonked, William the Conqueror’s favourite church pipped the castle to the title of ‘oldest building in Windsor’. The stained-glass windows are worth coming for alone, these being the work of Sir Ninian Comper, better known for

his work on Westminster Abbey (free to visit; Wed & Fri, 10am–12pm; standrewsclewer.org).

“I

learn that Windsor was once a big dot on the national map of beer, a title the town is now poised to seize back”

Then it’s over to All Saints. In 2017, this redbrick Victorian masterpiece attracted national attention when its parishioners stumbled upon an impossibly beautiful reredos by Thomas Hardy, crafted during his short stint as an architect and later inexplicably covered up for 100 years by wood panelling (free to visit; church open Mon–Wed & Sat, 10am–4pm).

Later, I head down the Thames Path to Boveney to find St Mary Magdalene. The lonely belfry of this now-redundant Saxon-era chapel looms large over the surrounding fields. During daylight hours it is open to the public, who will find evidence of generations of worshippers dating back hundreds of years written in the graffiti scribbled in the pews and the knee-shaped abrasions in the hassocks.

Time for lunch, methinks, and so I head back into town to Trinity Yard. I while away some time shopping for avant-garde furniture in Urbansuite before ending up in Millar’s Eatery, a love letter to brunches brought back from around the world by journeymen father-and-son co-founders Richard and Ross (millarseatery.co.uk; brunches from £4, mains from £6).

For the evening’s revelries, it’s over to Castle Hill, the medieval epicentre of the town, passing along the way via Bachelor’s Acre to admire local sculptor Lydia Karpinska’s The Windsor Lady, a humble bronzework of Queen Elizabeth II. My destination is a building that attracts a glut of interest, known locally – and quite appropriately –as the Crooked House. The story goes that it was constructed using unseasoned green oak, which warped before hardening, resulting in its now trademark nine-degree tilt.

This suits its proprietors, The Shambles Bar, who find that social media snappers do half their marketing for them. The other half is down to their own hard work, having renovated this curious casa into an intimate setting in which to enjoy their hand-picked wines (theshamblesbar.co.uk; bottles from £28).

When it comes to lodgings, many will head to the glamorous hotels overlooking the castle. But my room is instead a little outside of town. The Loch & The Tyne by Adam Handling is on a mission to be Britain’s most sustainable gastropub, with ingredients grown on-site going on to make mouth-watering interpretations of classic British fare, all sold at what the restaurant calls cost-of-living-busting prices. A hearty six-course tasting menu serenades me to my cosy bedroom with a view over the glebes of Old Windsor and Runnymede (lochandtyne.com; tasting menu £65pp; rooms start from £147).

For my second day, there’s enough time to sample Windsor’s museums. Of particular noteworthiness is the Windsor & Royal Borough

Museum (Wed–Sun, 10am–4pm), situated within the town’s Guildhall, which houses a collection of incredible Bronze Age finds from nearby Kingsmead Quarry.

Then it’s over to Eton, where for one day a month, the kooky-cool History on Wheels museum opens its doors. For just £7, I spend the morning admiring the eclectic collections of Tony Oliver, which includes everything from General McArthur’s Cadillac to the country’s largest collection of Charles & Diana porcelain (see website for opening times; historyonwheels.co.uk).

Then in the afternoon, Eton College offers not one, not two, but three of its own museums – all totally free to enter. There is the Natural History Museum, smaller than its South Kensington namesake but no less striking, and the Museum of Antiquities, a collection of ancient artefacts donated by Old Etonians, but the stand-out exhibition is the Museum of Eton Life, a look behind the curtain at how Eton boys live their daily lives within this hallowed school (museums open Sun 2.30–5pm).

Minus lodgings, I’ve spent less than the combined ticket price to the castle exploring some of Windsor’s most intriguing and historic sights – and yet, I leave feeling I’ve barely scratched the surface. So yes, it’s not only possible, it’s darn near advisable to do Windsor on the cheap. With so much to see, do and taste beyond the castle walls, you’d be forgiven for forgetting Windsor was ever home to, erm… who was it again?

The Deer of Richmond Park

Richmond Park was originally a deerhunting park, and still has 300 red deer and 350 fallow deer.

When Charles I moved his court to Richmond Palace (no longer standing) to avoid the plague in London, in 1625, he turned his manor into a deer park with herds of fallow and red deer. The park was enclosed with an 8 mile long brick wall in 1637. Most of the wall that still encloses Richmond park is the original. The Royal deer have been maintained in Richmond ever since.

The deer have played a major role in the Park’s history and have shaped the landscape too. Their special grassland habitat depends on grazing and the parkland trees have a distinctive ‘browse line’ as the deer eat all the leaves and twigs growing below about 1.5 metres. Deer grazing also prevents tree seedlings from growing, keeping the grassland open. For young trees to survive they need to be

protected against damage from deer antlers for some 50 years.

During the autumn the deer ‘rut’ (breeding season) takes place. The red stags and fallow bucks compete for females (known as hinds and does respectively). At this time, the large males roar, bark and clash antlers in a spectacular way in an attempt to fight off rivals and to attract as many females as possible. The young are born mainly in June, and are hidden by their mothers amongst the bracken and long grass. Females and their young are very vulnerable and sensitive to disturbance at this time Herds of red and fallow deer roam freely within much of the park. The herds are culled in November to keep numbers manageable and the park population healthy.

The British Deer Society and the Deer Initiative of England and Wales, who are regarded as the main welfare organizations dealing with the welfare and management of deer nationally, recognise that parkland deer numbers must be managed and that removal of some of the deer is necessary each year to keep populations at acceptable levels.

The keeping of deer in enclosed English parkland has a long heritage. Although many ancient parks were originally maintained for hunting purposes, in recent times it is recognised that the deer herds of the Royal Parks in London are an integral part

“The keeping of deer in enclosed English parkland has a long heritage”

of the parks’ ecosystem, as well as being a valuable amenity and educational feature. These parkland deer are wild animals, which are not regularly shepherded or handled; they are left to breed normally and to establish normal social behaviour.

All deer parks have a maximum capacity of deer numbers, which must not be exceeded to avoid problems of disease and damage to the natural environment (the complex ecosystems for which Richmond Park is notified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, National Nature Reserve and a

PARTRIDGES AWARDED ROYAL WARRANT BY KING CHARLES III

Partridges is honoured to have been awarded a Royal Warrant as Grocers to His Majesty The King. Thirty years ago, in 1994, Partridges was awarded a Royal Warrant to Her Majesty the Queen.

The high-profile store, an independent familyrun food retailer, was founded in 1972 and operates in Duke of York Square, Chelsea and Gloucester Road, Kensington. It sells over 10,000 fine food and drink items and its slogan has always been “Good things for the larder.” Partridges is committed to becoming more sustainable and has achieved carbon neutrality over the past 12 months.

The original Partridges opened on 25th May 1972 by Sir Richard Shepherd in the fashionable area of Sloane Street in Chelsea. It quickly gained a reputation for selling the best quality foods from British producers and importing food and wines from all over the world.

From the early days it was a convenient place to shop, opening long hours and offering a free bicycle delivery service.

In 1981, Sir Richard’s younger brother John Shepherd took over the reins and continues to run the business today. He said... “On behalf of all the staff at Partridges I am absolutely

delighted to announce that we have been awarded a Royal Warrant as Grocers to His Majesty The King. This is an incredible honour, and we are thrilled to have been supplying the Royal Family for over thirty years. We are sure that all our customers will be as excited about this announcement as we are.”

Partridges in Duke of York Square features a café, a delicatessen counter, a weekly Saturday Fine Food Market, mouth-watering food and drink, a huge range of American groceries and a dedicated Eco-Friendly range. More about High Clandon Vineyard

High Clandon was founded 20 years ago by Sibylla and Bruce Tindale whose desire to produce only aged-vintage English sparkling wine. The idea was to produce small quantities of exquisite Cuvées to surpass the best that France can offer! Many Gold Medal awards later they have a range of classic Cuvées to delight.

Grown in the Surrey Hills in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the vineyard is planted on a chalky-limestone hill, the same geological formation as that of the famed Champagne region.

Q by Aston Martin celebrates 60 years of iconic James Bond partnership with DB12 Goldfinger Edition

Aston Martin is proud to present the DB12 Goldfinger Edition, crafted by the ultra-luxury marque’s bespoke personalisation service, Q by Aston Martin, in celebration of 60 years of the iconic association between Aston Martin and the James Bond film franchise.

What has become one of the most notable partnerships in cinematic history began with the release of Goldfinger in 1964, when the Aston Martin DB5 made its silver screen debut. The DB5 went on to become one of the world’s most recognisable cars and a crucial step in the brand’s illustrious ‘DB’ bloodline. Now, the latest evolution in that lineage is getting the 007 treatment.

To mark this historic milestone, just sixty DB12 Goldfinger Editions will be released worldwide, paying tribute to a relationship that has spanned over half of Aston Martin’s illustrious 111-year history.

DB12 GOLDFINGER EDITION

Whilst the DB5 that featured in Goldfinger was equipped with all the gadgets needed to escape Bond’s adversaries, the DB12 Goldfinger Edition is focused on providing a more indulgent James Bond driving experience, incorporating subtle touches from the Goldfinger film.

Presented in the iconic Silver Birch paint colour synonymous with the DB5 in Goldfinger, the DB12 Goldfinger Edition establishes an immediate statement. triking 21” multi-spoke wheels with a unique silver colour with a diamond treatment finish are complemented by black brake calipers, bespoke gold side strakes and a unique Aston Martin logo in silver with a black enamel. Crowned with a bright chrome ‘Q’ fender badge gives confirmation that this DB12 has received some truly special touches.

Inside this special edition, the leather Sports Plus seats are finished in the classic DB5 fluted style with an intricate Prince of Wales check perforation pattern, in a nod to a classic James Bond suit. This pattern extends to both the door inserts and the headliner, as well as being etched onto a unique treadplate. A polished sill plaque adorns the Goldfinger 60th anniversary logo.

Adding an elevated level of ultra-luxury to the interior of the car and awaiting the driver’s touch is 18k Gold Plated interior accents, decorating the drive mode rotary dial and the roller controls, as well as the notched gear selector which takes design inspiration from the golden tracking device used by Bond in the film. A subtle nod for Bond aficionados is the ’eight of hearts’ embroidered onto the drivers’ sun visor, which references the playing card seen in last draw during the famous

Miami pool scene in Goldfinger.

DB12 was the first of Aston Martin’s next generation of sports cars to showcase the marques new infotainment system, designed and developed in-house using state-of-the-art technology.

Offering the perfect balance between touchscreen controls and tactile physical switches, this is the first infotainment system built in-house at Aston Martin, which has allowed the brand to provide a uniquely bespoke system for entertainment and navigation. When driving a Bond inspired DB12, occupants need a soundtrack to match and as such, the Goldfinger Edition also comes with the Bowers & Wilkins halo audio system as standard

The Aston Martin DB12 was the first of the next generation of sportscars from Aston Martin. Since its 2023 debut, the super tourer has been joined by the new Vantage, DBX707 and the newly unveiled Vanquish.

First deliveries of this unique offering will commence in Q2 2025.

EXPERTS REVEAL Biggest beauty trends for 2025

Beauty experts delve into their beauty predictions.By Lara Owen

As we step into 2025, it’s clear that trends of the beauty world are getting a face lift.

While some fads vow to continue – such as 2024’s defining blush trend – new buzzwords such as ‘prejuvenation’ promise to bring a fresh face to the industry.

Here are the hotly anticipated beauty trends that experts say to watch out for in 2025.

SKINCARE AND MAKE-UP HYBRIDS

The year 2024 saw tweens and swathes of Gen Z focus more on their skincare routines than ever before. Children as young as eight were putting potent serums and anti-ageing products on their Christmas lists, according to the British Association for Dermatologists.

This – potentially worrying – obsession with skincare among the younger generations has forced make-up brands to pivot, making skincareinfused make-up a leading trend for 2025.

“There is certainly a growing demand for makeup infused with skincare, particularly products that suitable for all ages,” explains Oriflame’s senior marketing director Lydia Smeds. “Consumers are looking for items that simplify their routine without sacrificing performance.”

This comes in the form of SPF-infused foundations, lipstick-nourishing balms and

peptide-pumped BB creams. This dual-purpose approach reflects the broader trend of beauty, where minimalist looks and streamlined product ranges aligns with a desire for practicality.

PREJUVENATION

While skincare-infused make-up is on the rise in 2025, the idea of ‘prejuvenation’ is also expected to be the new beauty buzzword that enters our lexicon.

If 2024 was about “clean girl make-up” (which let the skin speak for itself) then 2025 is the year of “prejuvenation”: a proactive approach to skincare that prioritises long-term investments over quick fixes.

“Prejuvenation will be a strong aesthetic theme for 2025, implementing proactive skin tactics now in order to change the course of skin ageing later on in life,” explains LYMA founder Lucy Goff.

“The emergence of highly advanced energybased solutions that are minimally invasive has been a real driving force,” says Goff, such as at-home laser light therapy and collagen-based serums and supplements.

This prevention tactic to beauty has become widespread, as many have realised that it is easier to prevent something, rather than reverse it.

“Skin is a long-term investment, and huge improvements can be seen by optimising our own cellular processes,” says Goff. So for 2025, expect bathroom cabinets crammed with LED masks and chemical-based creams.

RELAXED BOHEMIAN GLAMOUR

While minimal make-up seems to be on the rise –getting glam will never go out of style.

For 2025, high-end glamour will come in the form of relaxed Bohemian style. “Relaxed glam is a big beauty vibe for 2025,” says Bonded founder Elizabeth Chandler. Think wispy lashes, unkempt brows and Seventies liner. “The perfectly buttoned-up and androgynous [beauty of] 2024 will be replaced with a softer, more feminine and floaty aesthetic in 2025,” she adds.

The Chloé runway brought boho-chic back into the fashion zeitgeist this year, and 2025 will see this trend tipping into the beauty sphere.

Chandler predicts this to appear in long soft waves, an earthy colour palette and eclectic styling – a pivot from the highly-strung “clean girl beauty” of 2024.

“There will be more Seventies and Eighties flavours which means that the natural undone look will run concurrently with the glam palette of the Eighties,” says Chandler. “There is this sense of the Eighties mindset in the air as we shake off the uptight perfection of 2024.”

EIGHTIES GLITTER

While beauty seems to be taking a more relaxed approach in 2025, there’s no denying the impact of the Eighties this coming year. Nostalgia-driven beauty will be making a comeback in the form of playful pigments and loose glitter.

“Soft blush and sheen finishes were huge in 2024,” says Chandler, “reminiscent of 1980s glamour.”

As blush boomed in popularity – leading some on social media to question whether they had ‘blush blindness’ (a term for over-applying blush without realising) – other Eighties make-up staples like loose glitter are predicted to rise the beauty ranks.

Playing off the ‘relaxed bohemian glamour’ trend – loose glitter has a certain nonchalance to it, elevating your make-up look without looking too ‘done’.

TAILOR-MADE BEAUTY

The year 2024 saw the rise in personalisation across the board – and the beauty sphere was no exception.

z“Historically, having something tailor-made to your requirements signalled exclusivity, but what

started with health data tracking has developed into having an intricate knowledge of our bodies and wishing to treat them accordingly,” explains Goff.

Customised beauty products are reaching new heights by the day, with brands like Skin + Me and Klira taking Gen Z by storm this year; bespoke skincare kits are set to be a big trend. Hypertargeted formulas at high-street prices proves personalised luxury is no longer reserved for the 1%.

Kim Kardashian’s dermatologist reveals hacks to combat winter dryness

Here’s how to treat dryness in all skin types this winter. By Lara

Whether you have oily, dry or ageing skin – everyone’s face suffers during the harsh winter weather.

“Prolonged exposure to hot water (which we use more of in winter) can strip the skin of its natural oils,” says Kim Kardashian’s cosmetic dermatologist, Dr Simon Ourian. “In winter, it’s essential to include skincare that hydrates and supports the skin’s natural barrier.”

To combat cold weather dryness, skin experts and dermatologists to the stars reveal the skin-saving techniques you should test this winter.

How to exfoliate throughout winter

Exfoliating your skin is an essential skincare step throughout the year. During the warmer months, your skin is more robust to frequent exfoliating as it is exposed to more sweat. But in winter, doing it with the same frequency as the rest of the year can exacerbate dryness. “For dry or sensitive skin you should exfoliate once a week or less, using gentle, non-abrasive exfoliants like lactic acid or enzymes,” says Ourian. “With oily or combination skin, you may still exfoliate one to two times a week but opt for hydrating exfoliants to avoid stripping oils. “Switch to milder products and use chemical exfoliants – like AHAs – over physical scrubs, which can be too harsh in winter. Less is more!”

Ingredients to avoid in cold weather

soothing herbs like aloe vera and liquorice, which “help with inflammatory or allergic reactions”. Ourian advises rich emollients for eczema:

“Look for ceramide-based creams and avoid hot showers.” As overly hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils. For rosacea, he recommends niacinamide and aloe vera, noting that “these soothe irritation and strengthen the skin barrier”. Skin conditions that spotlight dryness means hydration is key. “Use a hyaluronic serum on damp skin, followed by an emollient-rich moisturiser,” says skin therapist and co-founder of Ella & Jo, Niamh Ryan.

There are some common ingredients in your everyday products that can actually worsen winter dryness. Alcohol-based toners, harsh retinoids, and abrasive scrubs are all culprits. “These [ingredients] can strip the skin of its natural oils, leaving it vulnerable to irritation,” warns Cetraben‘s Dr Erica Mulholland. Instead, focus on soothing ingredients. “Anti-inflammatory herbs like chamomile, willow bark, and marigold maintain moisture levels while calming the skin,” advises founder of Notting Hill’s coveted wellness club Cloud Twelve, Jenya Di Pierro. For a hydration boost, Beauty Pie‘s Nicola Moulton recommends products with hyaluronic acid and oils, “These ingredients give your skin a much-needed boost of moisture.”

How to handle dryness with a skin condition

For those with skin conditions, winter can be particularly challenging. “Cold weather and dry air can trigger flare-ups,” says Di Pierro. She suggests

How to find the perfect moisturiser (that doesn’t clog pores)

Winter is certainly the season for richer formulations, but balance is key. “Heavier creams can be beneficial, but it’s important to choose non-comedogenic options to avoid clogged pores and congestion,” says Ourian. Lighter formulas are best for hydrating the skin in the cooler seasons. “Hydrating masks and oils can lock in moisture and rejuvenate the skin overnight,” says Moulton. “Try a double-cleansing balm in the evening to melt away make-up without stripping the skin, and layer a sleep oil on top for extra nourishment.”

New Year fashion resolutions

Here are four ways to revamp your wardrobe for the New Year.

As we head into the new year, the pressure to make a cracking resolution is on, but where’s best to start than with your wardrobe?

From forming a signature style to creating your own fashion mantra – fashion tycoons share their no-brainer fashion resolutions to make for 2025.

MASTER THE LAYERING GAME

One of the greatest style resolutions to make in the new year – that I’m sure we’ve made time and time again – is to streamline your wardrobe.

With that, comes the art of mixing and matching to try and cut down on pointless wardrobe pieces.

“It’s all about unexpected combinations,” says Boohoo’s head of product, Sarah Heaton, who suggests mixing relaxed bottoms with elevated tops – such as the trending barrel-leg jean with a chiffon or ruffled blouse.

Luckily, layering always relies on classic and timeless pieces. “We’ll see people leaning into the nostalgic British aesthetic – like trench coats layered over structured blazers and rugby shirts,” says Lounge’s head of product, Emily Blount.

Layering isn’t just for function – it’s a way to create looks that transition seamlessly from day to night. So mixing together contrasting pieces is a great way to spice up your outfits in 2025.

FIND YOUR SIGNATURE SILHOUETTE

Much like 2024, timeless silhouettes will reign supreme in 2025 – but this year, it’s all about tailoring one uniquely to you.

“We’ve always championed tailoring,” explains British fashion designer and founder of Holland Cooper, Jade Holland Cooper. “The perfect blazer, impeccably cut trousers and a timeless trench coat are wardrobe workhorses.”

To find your staple silhouette, looking beyond classically gendered styles is important, as Holland Cooper notes with the resurgence of more masculine designs, “the three-piece suit is having a real moment,” she explains, which could be down to the current Eighties fashion revival.

“It’s sharp, sophisticated and chic – great for the office, but also an empowering ensemble for women in their day-to-day lives.”

Tailoring is also a great opportunity for experimenting to find your true style, “With tailoring being such a key trend, focus on how it works with your body and colouring,” suggests Blount. “A structured dress or waistcoat can bring elegance along with individuality.”

ZARA VELVET MIDI DRESS, £29.99
ZARA ZW COLLECTION ROMANTIC BLOUSE, £39.99

So, whether you’re adopting power dressing or adopting a more fluid style – finding your signature silhouette will help make curating outfits a whole lot easier in 2025.

NOD TO TRENDS

When a trend you love comes about, it can be tempting to go all in and revamp your whole wardrobe. But with overconsumption high on everyone’s radar, 2025 may be the year to nod to a trend through more subtle style statements.

“I tend to opt for classics that will remain in fashion whilst also being the perfect staple to style the key trends of the season,” explains Holland Cooper, who uses the example of a trench coat.

When it comes to trends, “fashion is always subjective,” notes Blount, “and everyone has their own interpretation of the fad.

“The key with any fashion trend is to ensure you’re staying true to your personal style, what you feel comfortable in, and what makes you happy.”

The easiest way to nod to trends is to look at those that already encompass items in your wardrobe – such as favourite colours, certain cuts or particular accessories.

ADOPT A FASHION MANTRA

All the fashion greats have one thing in common: their own fashion mantra.

For fashion designer and podcaster Amanda Wakeley OBE, it’s ‘Don’t save for best, dress your best everyday.’

“We all have those incredible pieces that have been in our wardrobe hardly worn that we keep for ‘special occasions’ and then often the moment passes and we wished we had worn them more,” says Wakeley.

“My view is clothes and accessories, for that matter, are not there to hang in a cupboard, they are there to be worn and loved and lived in. Your wardrobe should be a reflection of you, your values, and your joy. Style isn’t just about looking good – it’s about feeling good in your skin. Wear your best and you’ll likely feel it too.”

“Don’t be afraid to be bold,” says Holland Cooper. “I love bright fabrics and I’m not scared to mix tweeds.

“Power dressing isn’t going anywhere; it’s more than a trend – it’s a movement. The right outfit can change how you feel, as fashion is all about confidence, so wear what makes you feel

empowered.”

And when it comes to forming your own, focus on what fashion means for you. Whether that’s sustainability, elegance or individuality – take these associations and make it into a memorable soundbite that you repeat every time you put an outfit together.

A personal favourite is ‘dress to express – not impress’ – and that applies to everything from leggings and a jumper to showstopping evening gowns.

HOW TO STAY CHIC IN THE SNOW

Here are expert style tips for coldweather dressing. By Lara Owen

Dressing both stylishly and practically is a tricky task to perfect, but with temperatures forecast to drop further, fashion insiders reveal their top tips for staying warm and looking chic in the snow…

LAYER UP

When it comes to layering, the key lies in quality over quantity. In order to maintain a sleek silhouette, you’ll want to invest in high-quality thermals that allow breathability whilst keeping you warm, and won’t bulk out your outfit. “Opt for thin, fitted base layers and use mid-layers that cinch at the waist, such as belted cardigans or tailored blazers, to define your shape,” says style and trends expert, Karine Laudort.

“Then balance out proportions by pairing oversized outerwear – such as puffer coats or capes – with slim-fitting trousers or leggings.”

DON’T INVEST IN A TREND

It can be tempting to splash out on a new luxe pair of snow boots the moment temperatures drop, but perhaps designer Moon Boots aren’t the way forward for an item you’ll only wear twice a year.

“A classic black or tan leather boot will always look good and is one of the most versatile items in your wardrobe,” says House of Bruar’s creative

director, Tom Birkbeck. “You can pair them with anything from casual trousers to feminine dresses with tights and thick socks – just make sure your boot has a strong grip on the bottom to avoid any accidents!” Laudort recommends opting for neutral tones when it comes to practical footwear, “neutral tones and simple designs are best for investment pieces, leaving bold patterns and unusual silhouettes for trend-driven choices.”

MIX TEXTURES

The easiest way to look chic whilst being bundled up is to mix and match textures whilst keeping the same colour tone. Natural materials such as leather and wool provide breathability whilst adding a touch of sophistication. Faux fur trims are an easy way to elevate an otherwise simple coat or outfit. “Start with a neutral base by pairing leather leggings or trousers with a simple wool turtleneck,” suggests Laudort. “Then layer by adding either a faux-fur gilet or scarf for a luxurious touch.” Laudort emphasises the importance of proportions, “There should also be balanced proportions, so try to mix heavy textures with lighter ones – for example, a sleek leather midi-skirt with a chunky-knit sweater.”

TOP IT OFF

The non-negotiables lie in the accessories. “Chunky scarves and gloves in luxe fabrics like cashmere or merino wool add warmth and

elegance to your winter look,” says Laudort. The leading accessories trend for 2024 seems to be a combination of the hat and scarf, coming in the form of a balaclava. Opting for a bold colour or pattern is a great way to inject personality into your outfit. Accessories tend to be the most affordable pieces of a winter ensemble, meaning they’re easy to swap in for trend-led items. But if you’re looking to invest, Birkbeck suggests focusing on the material more so than the style. “Synthetic fabrics such as polyester and nylon are not as hardwearing as natural fabrics, so looking for items with a high wool count, for example, will ensure you have winter pieces that are built to last and can be worn year after year.”

PADEL TENNIS

The sport that’s taking the UK by storm

If you haven’t heard of padel tennis yet, it’s only a matter of time. This fast-paced blend of tennis and squash is the fastest growing sport in the world, attracting players of all ages and abilities. Accessible, sociable, and great fun, padel is quickly becoming the go-to sport for fitness enthusiasts and casual players alike.

So, what is Padel Tennis?

Imagine a sport that combines the racket skills of both tennis and squash. Padel is played on a smaller court, encased by glass walls that also play a key part in the strategy of the game. Originally from Mexico, padel tennis is now played by over 30 million people worldwide, the sport is booming and has never been more popular. It’s a sport favoured by celebrities including David Beckham, Lionel Messi, Andy Murray, Serena Williams and Antonio Banderas.

Unlike tennis, it’s easy to pick up for beginners, while still offering plenty of challenge for experienced players. It is nearly always played in doubles which by nature makes it a very social sport, perfect for families, friends, and community groups. One thing is for sure - once played forever addicted!

The compact space and innovative rules—such as being able to play shots off the walls—make for fast-paced, tactical games that are as exciting to watch as they are to play.

Indoor padel courts are the perfect solution to the Great British weather

In Europe padel tends to be played outdoors, although it’s interesting to see that all major professional tournaments are held indoors. But living in the UK the unpredictable weather makes

outdoor padel a challenge; indoor courts provide the perfect solution, allowing players to enjoy the game without worrying about rain or chilly winds.

One company is at the forefront of indoor padel – The Padel Hub currently has 4 clubs in Slough, Crawley, North London and the newly opened Epsom club, with 2 more opening in Fleet and Reading in early 2025 plus many more to come in their rapid expansion plans. The Padel Hub is certainly changing the face of padel in the UK with their all inclusive club approach featuring state of the art indoor courts and onsite gyms in partnership with world leading specialist Technogym. But they don’t stop at fitness, they have fully embraced the social side of padel with lively bar and café areas that always seem to be buzzing with pre and post match chat. Their model brilliantly appeals to both experienced players and complete beginners with coaching, group lessons, social mix ins, competitive tournaments plus they also offer a free ‘Intro to Padel’ session to anyone looking to investigate the sport for the first time –how refreshing!

If you’re looking for a new way to stay active, connect with others, or simply try something different, padel might be just the sport for you. As its popularity soars, there’s never been a better time to get involved. padelhub.uk

CORE FOCUS: Your January Reset

Pilates has long been known for its benefits, but through the years it’s evolved and become a powerhouse in the fitness world because it’s not only practised by pro- athletes in every disciple, but it can be tailored to every age group. From kids through to grandparents Pilates has a place for all.

Nazanin Idelji started her Pilates journey over 15 years ago after suffering from severe back pain for most of her teenage years, a result of 2 prolapsed discs. Starting Pilates in her late 20’s she realised through the mentoring of an incredible teacher the physical and mental benefits of Pilates. She still has 2 prolapsed discs which to this day have not been operated on but they don’t cause her any pain or restrict her from enjoying life and movement. She puts this all down to Pilates.

Nazanin went onto to train to become a certified Pilates instructor with Body Control Pilates. Through combining teachings from both her instructor and professional school, as well as research and practise, she has created private classes that help with body reshaping, weight management, back, neck and shoulder pain, pre and post-natal support, and management and prevention of arthritis. She also works with pro-athletes to help their performance and has created a program for women going through the menopause.

Nazanin is also the founder and creator of Pilatots, a kids Pilates class which helps children grow happy, healthy bodies from a young age through the connection of the body and mind. Pilatots featured at Happy Place festival in 2024 and can be found weekly in Foxhills Country Club

as well as private London based pre-schools. As someone who wasn’t happy with their body, in excruciating pain, and under the care of medical professionals she knows the power of Pilates first hand and has seen the difference it’s made to many clients’ day to day lives both physically and mentally. As she says happiness all starts in the body.

Nazanin offers private one to one reformer + mat classes in person and on Zoom.

“I love Pilates with Naz. You get results and fast! Her teaching is fun and her personality shines through.

Her explanations are so clear I find that I can focus on the moves and not worry about having to look all the time but Naz is always watching to make sure your form is perfect!”

New fitness trends for 2025

Sticking to your fitness resolutions could become a whole lot easier if you hop onto one of these up-and-coming trends. By Prudence Wade,

January is fast approaching, meaning many of us will be looking for a way to get back into exercise and boost our fitness after a sluggish Christmas. But, if the idea of spending relentless hours on the treadmill fills you with dread, it’s always worth trying something new.

Experts have predicted some of the biggest fitness trends we can expect to see in 2025, and they might just be the shot of adrenaline your workout routine needs…

PADEL

Padel has already been growing in popularity, and 2025 is set to be the year it really takes over – particularly as back in September, the LTA and LTA Tennis Foundation announced it was investing £6 million into 40 projects, funding 75 new courts around the country.

This racket sport “has a lot of similarities with tennis, including its scoring system and core skillset, which makes it easy to understand”, explains Martyn Oakey, personal trainer and head of fitness at Everlast Gyms, part of Sports Direct.

“However, it is played on a smaller, enclosed court, meaning groups of mixed ages and abilities can play it together, and shots can be played off the walls. Its benefits are similar to tennis, offering competition, as well as a great form of stop/start exercise to help boost your cardio and muscular endurance.”

It’s proving particularly popular “thanks to its social nature” and the fact it’s easily accessible, Oakey suggests: “Once you’ve found your local court, all you need is a racket, a ball and a partner.”

CALLISTHENICS

If you’ve ever seen anyone doing impressive handstands in the gym, there’s a good chance they might be doing callisthenics – a type of body weight conditioning.

“Callisthenics are an ancient form of exercise,

which has recently seen a huge boost in popularity and is expected to continue growing into the new year. Simply put, they refer to a wide range of strength exercises conducted using body weight,” Oakey says.

Luckily, it’s not all as difficult as smashing out a one-armed handstand. In fact, Oakey says: “The barrier to entry is extremely low. You can do most of these exercises in your own home with little to no equipment, or in a gym. They’re also accessible in terms of ability and sometimes used by physios [as part of treatment regimes]. Once you’ve learned the basics for a number of exercises, you can easily incorporate them into your fitness routine and daily schedule.”

Squats, push-ups and planks are all basic callisthenics exercises, and once you’ve mastered them, you can progress to some of the fancier stuff.

HIKING

Not all exercise has to be in the gym. As Carla Khouri, qualified mountain leader and outdoor instructor from the Merrell Hiking Club, says: “The UK is witnessing a hiking renaissance, with the activity poised to become one of 2025’s hottest fitness trends. As urban life grows more intense, people are discovering what generations before them knew: there’s profound value in stepping away from screens and schedules to reconnect with nature.

“Beyond its physical benefits, such as increasing muscular strength and endurance, promoting better balance and flexibility, and improving

cardiovascular health, hiking offers a powerful antidote to modern stress. There is increasing evidence to suggest hiking helps improve low mood and reduce stress and anxiety.”

Khouri suggests one of the best things about hiking is its “simplicity”, adding: “No expensive equipment or gym memberships required, just a willingness to step outside and explore. As more people embrace this natural approach to fitness, they’re not just reaping the benefits of exercise, they’re also feeling a sense of community, adventure, and a renewed connection with the great outdoors.”

OPEN WATER SWIMMING

Hiking isn’t the only outdoor activity set to make waves in 2025. Ramona Cojocaru, head of category at Decathlon UK, suggests that open water swimming – which has been gathering steam, with sales of wetsuits for open water swimming increasing by 44% at Decathlon in the last year – will explode in popularity over the next 12 months.

Put simply, this is “the activity of swimming in anything other than a pool”, explains Cojocaru. “Popular spots include lakes, rivers and the sea, with some lovely locations available along the British coastline.”

As well as all the rewards of being in the great outdoors, there are plenty of physical benefits. “Swimming is a full-body workout that improves circulation and cardiovascular health. There are also benefits such as boosted immunity, recovery and mental health, as open water swimming generally taking place in colder waters,” says Cojocaru.

QUADROBICS

It might have a slightly unusual name, but this trend isn’t as far-fetched as it sounds. Claire Phippen, personal trainer at PureGym Norwich, describes quadrobics as “inspired by natural movement patterns – namely using all four limbs to mimic animal movements”.

This full-body workout might see you jumping on all fours, or even mimicking the gait of certain animals. Not only is it a lot of fun, Phippen says: “This style of training can improve strength, power and functional performance as it engages multiple muscle groups in the body, and promotes better posture and body mechanics.”

ROLLER SKATING

Roller skating hit its stride during the early days of the pandemic, and experts believe it’s going to see another burst in popularity in 2025 – particularly as sales of rollerskates went up by 30% at Decathlon in the last year.

“The activity has a huge following on social media, with over 250 million posts existing on #RollerSkate TikTok, from clips of people dancing to music at events and roller-discos,” says David Martin, mobility commercial leader at Decathlon UK.

“Not only is skating an enjoyable pastime, it’s an effective way to keep fit. The activity is low impact and low-intensity, whilst giving the lower body a good workout through its need for balance and co-ordination.”

2025 Skin Trends with Dr Nyla Raja

Ahighly respected and much sought after skin specialist and cosmetic dermatology GP, Dr Nyla Raja has practiced medicine for over 20 years and has personally delivered over 200,000 treatments with exceptional results. Trusted by

television personalities, well-known celebrity figures and some of the UK’s most familiar faces, she is considered to be one of the top cosmetic doctors in the country. Here she gives her insight into the top

skincare and aesthetics trends to watch in 2025. Dr Nyla says “As we move into 2025, the world of aesthetics and skincare will continue to evolve. It’s not just about the aesthetic outcome anymore,

but a holistic approach to maintaining skin health and longevity. Patients are looking for advanced, non-invasive treatments that enhance natural beauty and focus on long-term skin wellness. Some of the biggest trends in 2025 will include:

Undetectable Beauty

“2025 will be all about ‘undetectable beauty’, where aesthetic treatments enhance your natural features without being visibly noticeable. The desire for subtle, natural-looking enhancements is at an alltime high. Patients are increasingly leaning towards procedures that deliver natural, ‘undetectable’ results. They want to look refreshed, not altered. Micro-lifting, skin tightening treatments, and

“2025 will be all about ‘undetectable beauty’, where aesthetic treatments enhance your natural features without being visibly noticeable”

injectables will focus on enhancing natural contours and improving skin tone.”

Preventative Aesthetics

“Younger generations are increasingly focused on ‘prejuvenation’ - preventing the signs of ageing before they occur. Patients are looking for preventative treatments that preserve skin firmness and delay signs of ageing, without the need for more invasive interventions later on. Light peels, laser facials, and micro-injectables will become key treatments for maintaining youthful, firm skin.”

Personalised Skincare

“With advances in technology, we’re entering an era where we’ll see a rise in skincare routines that are built based on genetic data for DNA-driven skincare customisation and AI-based real-time skin analysis, allowing for more effective, personalised treatments. These tools will provide consumers with tailored recommendations that address their specific skin concerns, from ageing to pigmentation.”

Barrier Repair and Protection

“Maintaining a strong, healthy skin barrier is the foundation of any effective skincare routine for overall skin health. Products designed to strengthen the barrier with ceramides, peptides, and prebiotics will become staples, especially as ‘skin minimalism’ continues to trend. We’re focusing on fewer but

highly potent ingredients that support the skin’s natural defences. It’s all about achieving a youthful glow that looks like you’ve just had a great night’s sleep, not a procedure.”

Ingredient Innovation

“Ingredient innovation is moving rapidly. Peptides and growth factors will continue to dominate the anti-ageing skincare market, alongside new biotech-driven ingredients that offer alternatives to traditional retinoids and collagen-boosting agents.”

Advanced Skin Tightening and Firming

“We’re seeing incredible advancements in skin-tightening technologies. These treatments offer non-invasive, long-lasting solutions that help patients achieve firmer, more youthful skin without downtime. Treatments like our bespoke Transformation Facelift™ use advanced technologies to target deeper layers of the skin, lifting and firming without the need for invasive surgery. In just a few sessions, we can help restore volume and improve skin texture, leaving you with a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Additionally, our Transformation Bodylift targets stubborn fat in specific areas, to contour and reshape the body and build muscle for men and women. The treatment program combines different technologies bespoke to individual needs, and leaves patients feeling empowered, sculpted, and ready to step out with confidence.

Using a variety of innovative technologies, Tone & Tite therapy addresses all five key causes of cellulite. By combining radiofrequency and acoustic wave technology, the treatment plan works on both the superficial and deeper layers of the skin to improve tone and texture, delivering long-lasting results without downtime.”

What to do if there’s blood in

Going to the toilet to pass urine should be a very uneventful thing, but sometimes the colour of our urine isn’t quite what we’d expect and when our urine looks bloody it can be particularly worrying.

In this article, King Edward VII’s Hospital consultant urologist, Mr Marios Hadjipavlou explains what the colour of your urine might mean, what conditions it might be a symptom of and when you should make lifestyle changes or seek medical help.

What does red / pink urine mean?

Unexplained pink or red urine may suggest that

there is blood present in your urine. This could be a sign of something serious, even if there’s no other pain or symptoms. It’s therefore important that you’re seen by a specialist urologist to discover why there might be blood in your urine. Even if it only happens a single time and then stops, you should still seek further medical advise as it always warrants further investigations.

Blood in the urine is called haematuria and there are several health conditions that can cause it, most of which are benign. The bleeding can originate from anywhere in the urinary tract, including the kidneys, ureter, bladder or the urethra. It may also originate from the prostate in men.

Causes of blood on the urine can range from an

your urine

infection, kidney or bladder stones to a narrowing of the urethra to bladder or kidney cancer, and most rarely cancer of the urterer, urethra or prostate.

In men it can indicate prostate enlargement or cancer, so it’s important to be seen by a specialist urologist as soon as possible.

If you have blood in your urine, your specialist may perform blood tests, urine tests, a CT or ultrasound scan and a cystoscopy – where a camera is inserted into the urethra and bladder under a local anaesthetic.

Pink or red urine doesn’t always indicate the presence of blood. Eating a significant amount of certain foods such as beetroots or blackberries may cause pink or red urine. As can certain medications such as the antibiotic rifampicin and Pyridium which is used to ease pain in the urinary tract.

What if there are blood clots in my urine?

Blood clots in the urine suggest that there is a significant amount of bleeding. This is a medical emergency and requires a visit to A&E. Blood clots can sometimes block the flow of urine, causing urinary retention which needs urgent medical attention and catheterisation.

How can I avoid urine infections?

Urine infections, often referred to as urinary tract infections, UTIs or cystitis, are more common in women than men. This is due to the fact the urethra is shorter in women and there’s therefore less distance for bacteria to travel before reaching the bladder and causing an infection.

In order to reduce the frequency of urine infections, women can find it helpful to drink more water, go to the toilet before and after having sex and practice good personal hygiene. If you’re

experiencing frequent urine infections (more than 2 UTIs in 6 months or 3 in a year), speak to your GP for a referral to a urologist for investigations into their cause.

In men, urine infections are rare and for this reason should be investigated by a urologist even if you’ve only had one occurrence. This is because it may be a sign of a kidney or bladder stone, an enlarged prostate or a new predisposing medical condition such as diabetes.

Why do some people ignore their urine colour rather than seeking help?

Many people may not look in the toilet bowl, or they may simply flush straight away, meaning that they don’t see their urine. Others may simply ‘brush it off’ if they only see red urine once and then it goes back to normal. However even a single episode of blood in the urine needs to be evaluated thoroughly, fairly urgently.

2024 Interiors round-up

If 2024 stood for one thing, it was actually two things: utterly mouth-watering, jawdropping quality – not a stitch sewn out of place, pieces crafted from materials that are and the peak of top quality – and the confident ability to place items in our home knowing we’ll love them for a lifetime, but that not everyone will feel the sameThis year we’ve selected the finest, couldn’t-possibly-be-better representations of our style pieces that speaks to our souls – designs which are very much not-like-your- neighbours’ – a luxury that’s not just visually stunning, but profoundly personal.

In the final chapters of 2024, the essence of sincere, one-of-a-kind design hovers all around, setting the tone for a future defined by thoughtful curation and unageing grace. Here, we discuss the year’s standout pieces that narrate the aesthetics carrying us gracefully into the next era of interiors.

BEST IN LOUNGING - DS-888 Sofa, DeSede

A stand out piece from the year which exemplifies this refined, thoughtful, enduring-yet- creative mood, is the Collina sofa by de Sede Design-Team and Atelier Oï. Both proudly function-focused

and a bold sculptural statement, the sofa is designed to fit into lively and dynamic homes, its innovative back rest segments able to move in all directions thanks to a newly developed patented design, meaning one moment you could be sitting facing the television, the next out of the window, the next ready for an intimate talk. Take it upholstered in Nougat, Sand, Teak or Whisky if the last 12 months has revealed your love of neutrals, or in a brighter RAL colour if it’s unleashed your wild side.

BEST IN DINING - Napoleon Keramik,

Innovative technology meets one of our oldest yet most enduring materials in the Napoleon Keramik table. At the height of cutting-edge ceramic technology, it’s made with a previously unseen advanced modelling technique which makes design more flexible than ever. The material then seamlessly takes on the appearance of natural marble, in a selection of different finishes – such as the matt Invisible ceramic which is akin to a classic white marble with grey veins, the black with gold-veined Marmi matt Portoro ceramic and the soothing, gently swirling grey Colosseo, all in a range of interchangeable tabletop shapes (from oval and various rectangles to the asymmetric Polygon)

BEST IN SLEEPING - ARCHIBALD BED,

Frau

Nothing says I-walk-to-my-own-tune than a statement, directional, curiosity-piquing piece. The Archibald Bed doesn’t really feel like a bed. The characterful headboard folding around like the edges of paper or a gently curling leaf, it’s further enhanced by soft drapery that runs across its luxurious leather upholstery. Simultaneously familiar, safe, and inviting, it effortlessly combines design-led sophistication with chic elegance.

BEST IN LIGHTING - DOME LIGHT,

There’s something enchanting about the organic, free flowing nature of glass – so when it’s shaped into linear or geometric forms, our brains spark and stir. The Dome Light nods to classical Roman architecture and the sweeping curves of Venice in smooth or rippled glass, its angles precise and perfect as if ready to be built into a dreamlike glowing cityscape. This rigid structure is softened

by the piece’s function – the light it emits is gentle and cast down through a diffuser, transforming the strict measurements into something more bewitching and transfixing.

BEST IN ACCESSORIES - LINES RUG, GAN

In a year zooming in on quality that’s the best of the best, a tribute to merino wool is satisfyingly fitting. Mayice Studio’s Lines collection for GAN is a sensory experience, inspired by the importance of touch and the thrill in the authenticity of the natural. The long-pile rugs come in the undyed woollen tones of White, Brown, Grey, Charcoal, and are a fusion of a direct connection to nature and a heavy dose of a minimal, contemporary style – however did our floors and feet and feelings cope without it? chaplins.co.uk

CARING FOR YOUR LUXURY POOL

As you look at your resplendent new pool, the joy you feel at having a beautiful focal point in your home or garden may be tinged with concern about how to keep it in perfect condition. The pool has to retain its aesthetic, perform faultlessly, and the water must be crystal clear at all times.

The same applies even if your pool is longer established. All elements of the pool must operate at peak performance for pleasure, safety and minimum energy consumption. That means engaging an experienced pool company to advise on maintenance, conduct regular servicing and make any subsequent repairs as the pool matures.

There will always be those who are keen to look after their pools themselves, just as some people love to tinker with their luxury cars, but in our experience, most people prefer to spend their free time in the pool rather than ‘under the bonnet.’

Maintaining a luxury pool is a skilled job and we offer dedicated pool engineers who regularly service the same pool and develop an affinity with them. Familiarity with a pool allows our engineers to prevent problems occurring, so your pool never ‘goes down’ or develops costly repairs.

Here are the essential service and maintenance areas to safeguard your pool:

• water quality & safety – maintaining the correct chemical balance to avoid poor quality water and irritation to skin and eyes. Also, ensuring

that the water is always at the optimal level.

• equipment functionality – pools are built with superb technology and all complex systems need servicing for peak performance. Older pools may need to upgrade filters, pumps, heaters, pool liners and switch to a superior filter media, such as glass.

• aesthetics – avoid staining or scaling for example, from calcium build up or algae discolouration that could harm the pool and make it look uninviting.

• debris management – debris such as leaves must be removed from outdoor pools as part of a regular cleaning regime.

• outdoor pools – professional opening and closing will ensure you kick-off a new season in a healthy pool, and then close it properly in autumn to protect it from harsh or frosty winters.

Rustic

Charm

The new bathroom with age-old appeal

Interior designer and founder of The Baked Tile Company, Lesley Taylor, proves homeowners can enjoy all the charm of a vintage interior scheme with none of the hassle in a new bathroom makeover.

Using tiles from her own collection, Lesley has created a bathroom that pays homage to the property’s rustic past, while injecting a touch of 21st century styling.

Lesley said: “This bathroom is in quite a traditional house with lots of beams and vintage detailing, which is something the homeowner wanted to build on.

“We wanted to use product which would look like it’s always been there, but we needed to consider the practical elements too.”

Lesley delved into The Baked Tile range to pull together a mood board featuring three very distinctive tiles.

The floor uses Marrakesh Terracotta Brick in two different finishes, while Designer Basic in Boux was used on three walls to complement the distinctive Tuscany Flower Décor which takes centre stage.

Lesley explained: “We wanted to create a spacious bathroom that wasn’t interrupted by a separate shower cubicle. So we created a wet room complete with tiled shower tray to give the feel of a more expansive bathroom.

“We laid Marrakesh Terracotta Brick in both

light and dark variants in a classic herringbone style to add rustic charm. And unlike real terracotta, there is no need to seal the tiles which means minimal maintenance is required to keep them looking stunning.”

To create a showpiece behind the bath and shower enclosure, Lesley used Tuscany Flower Décor – a stunning tile that looks handcrafted.

Lesley said: “Tuscany Flower Décor is incredibly shiny with a gorgeous undulating surface. It looks like a real artisan tile, but it can stand up to everything a modern bathroom can throw at it.”

To complete the look, Designer Basic in Boux – a luxurious off-white shade – was used on the remaining walls.

Lesley said: “The Designer Basic range has been designed to complement a wealth of patterned tiles and ensure homeowners can keep their renovations to a tight budget.”

Bathroom Trends 2025

Roper Rhodes reveals the top four trends set to dominate bathrooms in 2025

The days of cold, clinical bathrooms are over, according to the experts at bathroom specialists Roper Rhodes.

As we head into a new year, homeowners investing in a bathroom renovation are looking to embrace colourful schemes that pay homage to the past while embracing new technologies.

Zoe Jones, Senior Creative Producer at Roper Rhodes, said: “When it comes to bathroom renovations, in 2025 the focus will be on making design decisions that reflect individual styles and personal histories while creating timeless and comfortable spaces.”

Here Zoe shares her top four bathroom trends for the new year:

NEWSTALGIA

Set against a backdrop of modern technology, the trend for new nostalgia hones in on curated spaces that are warm and familiar, yet in keeping with contemporary context.

The result is a fresh approach to the colours, materials and designs that many grew up withfrom the resurgence of travertine tiles, terracotta colour palettes and shower curtains to the remaking of the tried and tested blue bathroom.

Zoe said: “Newstalgia is a common thread weaving through all our trend predictions for 2025.

“More than ever, people are seeking warm, inviting interiors that feel both familiar and full of life and colour. There’s a collective fatigue with ‘Instagrammable spaces,’ and this sentiment is influencing bathroom design, too.

“Whether you lean towards minimalism or maximalism, the focus is on personal expression — selecting materials, finishes, and fixtures that resonate and create an atmosphere you genuinely enjoy.”

• Get the Look: Newstalgia Combine traditional materials such as wood, zellige tiles, aged brass and natural marble to soften the conventional blue bathroom that was so popular in decades past. Roper Rhodes’ traditional Burford vanity is given a twist with a countertop basin and a wall-mounted style, while the walk-in shower layout keeps the look fresh and up to date. Full of colour yet subtly balanced, the result is warm and inviting.

FLIGHTS OF WHIMSY

Deviating ever-so-slightly from Newstalgia is the passion for all things whimsical. The 2024 micro trend for characterful, mood-boosting bathrooms will blossom and take shape in 2025, with designers and homeowners alike embracing whimsical, retro shapes such as scallops, waves, and pinstripes and employing warming, joyful colours in their bathroom spaces.

Zoe said: “A gorgeous mix of colour and

eccentricity, the trend for whimsical bathrooms looks a little like the dopamine decor bathroom of before, but with one key difference- it’s informed by the past. Whether it’s a Liberty print wallpaper, a scalloped edge or a candy-stripe tile, this bathroom trend blends the most vivid and fanciful elements from times past and creates something fresh and new.”

• Get the Look: Flights of Whimsy

This bathroom design is all about texture and shape, and adding characterful elements tastefully.

WORKS OF ART

The growth of AI will bring a very human-centric response in interior design in 2025. The revival of Art Deco, Art Nouveau and the Arts & Crafts Movement is not just a celebration of design heritage but also reasserts the importance of human touch and craftsmanship in an increasingly automated world. While distinct in their own respects, each style emphasises the integration of artistic expression into everyday life and objects.

Zoe said: “From the arched shapes and decorative detailing of Art Deco, to the organic lines of Art Nouveau and the Arts & Crafts movements, we will see this trend move slowly but surely into bathrooms through pattern, texture and colours - particularly through the use of brass, deep greens, nature-inspired wallpaper and opulent tile work.”

• Get the Look: Works of Art

A decorative arch is a great way to introduce this trend into your bathroom. Combine with warm, rich colours, wood furniture and lustrous artisan tile work.

PAST TIMES

Regency-inspired interiors are making a grand

“The revival of Art Deco, Art Nouveau and the Arts & Crafts Movement is not just a celebration of design heritage but also reasserts the importance of human touch and craftsmanship in an increasingly automated world”

return in 2025, bringing a sense of elegance and sophistication to modern homes and bathrooms. Defined by their timeless appeal, these designs draw from the neoclassical influences of the early 19th century, characterised by symmetry, refined detailing, and luxurious finishes. In bathrooms, this trend is expressed through features like freestanding clawfoot bathtubs, ornate mirrors, and soft, muted colour palettes accentuated by gilded touches and marble surfaces. The rise of this style reflects a broader cultural desire for refined, tranquil spaces that balance opulence with comfort, blending historical charm with contemporary functionality.

Zoe said: “The traditional bathroom will never truly go out of fashion, but where in the past we have seen a mix of old and new, this year we believe it’s back to basics. Chrome and nickel brassware, soft muted colours and decorative woodwork & mouldings are the hallmarks of the Regency bathroom, and we’re wholeheartedly here for it!”

• Get the Look: Past Times

For this bathroom, we went with the tried and tested formula of warm subtle colours, aged tiles and traditional cabinetry. Naturally, the freestanding bath with chrome detailing is the focal point, while a traditional illuminated mirror keeps the design in line with the demand of the busy modern bathroom.

Notes from Nonna’s Kitchen

Don’t we all sort of wish we had a Nonna?

That ridiculously charming vision of an Italian granny, scooping handmade orecchiette pasta at the cucina table with her lace pinny on. Good news: this latest tile collection from the Studio at Ca’ Pietra is giving Nonna, big time. We might not be able to deliver you a Grazia (the name of our very own Head of Creative’s, Grazzie’s Nonna), but this is the next best thing, whisking you off to the cypress tree-studded Italian countryside, one tile at a time.

THE NONNA’S KITCHEN COLLECTION: MEET THE TILES

Ten tiles. All destined for your walls. Each one as charming as the other. That’s Nonna’s Kitchen for you in a nutshell. First up, we’ve got the florals.

The Classica tiles are all hand painted in the UK in aquintessentially provincial Italian palette – blue and white. There are three floral designs and one left largely plain (save for the delicate foliage corners) that can be combined on one wall

inwhatever way you please. Though, all white with then a gathering of florals in the centre like a piece of art is a characterful way to go about things in a rustic country kitchen – wooden pot hanger and all. Sorrento is far jazzier and takes you to Nonna’s lemon grove. Pick between a buttermilk backdrop or a blue sky day, and if you really want to go big on the rustic Italian kitchen feel, go for a whole wall in them – in a pantry with vintage pine shelving in front looks so great.

Nuvola has more of a playful feel to it with the two pastel colourways to pick between, each with a cloud effect and two colours of falling fruit. It’s a dreamy way of depicting sunset and sunrise skies and abundant Italian harvests all year round. Imagine those behind your stove.

And finally, Cornelia and Floreale that take a pure white glazed tile with decorative foliage and gentle colour. A whole kitchen in these with coloured cabinetry or exposed timber will bring you your very own la dolce vita.

THE TALE BEHIND THE TILES

For one of our first collections to come out of Studio, we wanted to create a collection that transported you to someplace else – somewhere nostalgic, somewhere comforting, some place that breathes good food into the heart of your home before you’ve even got out the chopping board.

Who better to do just that than the Italian Nonna you never had – or maybe you’re the lucky

“For one of our first collections to come out of Studio, we wanted to create a collection that transported you to someplace else”

sort who did and perhaps still do. It’s no secret that the Italian home kitchen is a special place. In recent years there’s been much written and brought to our television screens via various cooking shows featuring the wisdom and wonder of Italian pasta grannies, hand-making every shape and every sauce you could imagine. The kitchens we see them in are full of stories, tiles that are decorative but not fussy and that sit back against the farmhouse kitchen table and antique cabinetry that have been in the multi-generational family home for decades. It’s that very scene that we had in mind when designing the collection. You might not have olive branches extending outside your window, but the soul of the Italian kitchen can still be brought into homes far and wide. From country cottages to period townhouses in the city, these are tiles that will live their days richly, encouraging you to bring in fresh cut flowers and fruit from the market in their crumpled brown paper bags, to always keep the fridge full for whoever descends, to cook fine fare with family and friends and to live the good life in the heart of your home. “There’s an old Italian saying A tavola non s’invecchia that translates as: at the table, one does not grow old,” says our head of creative, Grazzie. “The notion of spending hours over proper food and that never ever being wasted is something we really had in mind when designing these tiles. But they don’t have to stay in the kitchen, remember: they translate to all parts of the home – imagine Nonna’s Classica around the fire, a shower enclosure tiled in Sorrento or Nuvola or a bathroom wall in pretty Cornelia. SOLD.” capietra.com
