Enjoy a Historic Christmas
Visitors to the stunning medieval city of Canterbury can experience a rare festive treat as a 600-year-old Christmas market returns to the grounds of its world-famous Cathedral.
First held in Canterbury Cathedral’s Precincts in 1383 following a royal grant by King Richard II, the market ran for hundreds of years. Reviving this centuries-old tradition in 2024, the modern Christmas market features a range of picturesque German-style wooden huts within the Cathedral Precincts, as well as delicious food and drink outlets, a vintage-style carousel ride, and live music performances – including Saturday Shoppers’ Carol Services.
There is free entry to the Precincts during the market – sightseers only need to pay to go inside the magnificent Cathedral and Cloister during visiting hours – and a variety of fun low and no cost community activities. As always, it is free to attend a service at the Cathedral or to go inside to pray, with donations welcome.
A collaboration between the Cathedral, Canterbury Business Improvement District and Rockhopper Events, this is an extension to Canterbury’s existing much-loved traditional festive market which spans the city centre.
“The Cathedral’s first Christmas Market was in 1383 following a royal grant by King Richard II”
Everyone is welcome to celebrate Advent and Christmas at the Cathedral’s many services of worship, inspired by this year’s theme of ‘Journeys’.
These include traditional carol services with the world-renowned Cathedral Choir, stories and songs for young families at the weekly Teatime Carol service, the Festival of Carols featuring a living nativity (including a donkey!), and the Christmas Day Eucharist. And of course, it wouldn’t be Christmas in Canterbury without the appearance of St Nicholas!
All seasonal services are free to attend, with retiring collections to help cover the Cathedral’s costs. Donations given at their two traditional carol services, and at all Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services will, after deduction of costs, be shared equally between the Cathedral and their chosen partner charity for this year, The Social Justice Network.
There is also a range of family-friendly craft activities running at the Cathedral throughout the season, and beautiful decorations to enjoy.
One hour’s train journey from central London, Canterbury is one of the UK’s most popular destinations for festive breaks, with the worldfamous Cathedral, cobbled streets, and medieval landmarks within.
Canterbury’s Christmas Market runs until 24th December 2024.
Chapter One is situated just off the south circular road, near Farnborough and Bromley and for the last 20 years, has stood out as one of Greater London’s top dining destinations. The multi award winning 3 AA rosette winning restaurant, has been under the ownership of Chef Andrew McCleish and Marcel Faulstich since 2017. The cuisine celebrates the best of both British and European cuisine using seasonal ingredients and can be enjoyed in either the formal restaurant, or the more relaxed brasserie.
Food & Drink
We ordered from the Alacarte menu, To begin, my partner opting for the Dorset snail Bourguignon, which was perfectly cooked, providing mild earthy tones and was served in a garlic Espuma, garlic crouton and parsley. I went for the Lobster Raviolo in lobster and indulgent tasting cognac cream sauce, which paired perfectly. To accompany dishes, we started with the Gerard Tremblay Chablis these, which was clean, crisp and delivered subtle apple and pear notes.
For my main, I went for the roast Scottish salmon with caramelized Aubergine and potato gratin. This was nice and flaky and not in anyway infused or overpowered by the aubergine. My partner went for fallow venison haunch with venison pie and braised red cabbage. The Venison was extremely succulent and lean, with a rich gamey flavour. The dish was not in anyway too heavy but was complimented with the addition of some beautifully cooked green beans in shallot butter. My partner accompanied this with Le Cedre Cahors Vintage Malbec, a full-bodied wine presenting flavours of ripe dark fruits, with an elegant finish. It’s clear from both the quality of all of the dishes and the carefully curated AA noted wine list that a great deal of effort has been put into ensuring a great dining experience.
For dessert I indulged in the Manjari Black forest gateau with chocolate sorbet and white chocolate aero, (pictured). The chocolate cake was pleasantly rich and went superbly with the tangy Cherry sorbet.
My partner had the baked coffee tart with coffee cremeux, and a black jelly brown butter crumb, which had a crisp and buttery texture while the coffee cremeux, was deliciously smooth, without being dense.
Summary
Although rightly thought of as somewhere “special” to go amongst locals of the restaurant and living up to this description, with it’s reasonably priced brasserie with it’s regular events calendar, Chapter One is definitely somewhere you should equally visit for a more relaxed dining experience.

Ensuring Memories Live On
Rika Chandra is a storyteller and penfor-hire, based in Bromley, Kent. She specialises in creating biographies for individuals with stories to share, be it an entrepreneurial journey, a milestone celebration, or a life filled with memories. Her company ‘Akuru’ serves as a platform for storytelling, beginning with her family’s history and the biography of her grandfather.
Rika’s fascination with her grandfather’s life began because he passed away before she was born. Her understanding of him was initially limited to a few images and secondhand stories, which wasn’t enough. Driven by curiosity, she delved deeper by interviewing surviving relatives, friends, and colleagues, uncovering beautiful, previously unknown stories. She also explored historical archives and contacted the universities and colleges he attended, discovering that he graduated in 1924—exactly 100 years ago. Her family now cherishes these stories. Originally trained as an architect, Rika worked in Project Management before shifting her focus to her true passion: storytelling. She now crafts
captivating stories for children and adults, and creates engaging content for businesses. Are you curious about your family history? Do you have a personal story to tell? As time passes and new generations are born, family stories can fade and be forgotten. Your collective history and stories are what make your family unique. Your life is worth celebrating. Rika offers a biography service with in-person or vitual interviews tailored to help you uncover your story, and written to reflect your tone of voice, personality, your journey and accomplishments. From short stories to a detailed biography, these packages include a professional photo shoot, and comprehensive management, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience. Whether as a gift for a loved one or a treat for yourself, take advantage of her seasonal discount available until Christmas Eve.
Beyond writing, Rika is passionate about tennis, whether she’s on the court or watching as an avid spectator. Her mischievous cat Milo keeps her on her toes, and she has an insatiable love for reading. Every time she passes a bookstore, she can’t resist adding a few (or ten) books to her collection. In September, Joe Lewis and his wife Milly took over the Headship of Saint Ronan’s. “We feel extremely lucky to have taken over a prep school which is thriving. The staff, parents and pupils have been hugely supportive and there is a palpable sense of excitement about the next chapter.”
Joe and Milly have moved, with their four children (Cecily, Posy, Bertie & Laurie), from Millfield in Somerset. Their eldest daughter is at senior school whilst their younger three have joined Saint Ronan’s. Joe says “the next chapter is about evolution not

revolution”, having taken over a school in fine fettle from predecessor William Trelawney Vernon and his wife Emma.
Saint Ronan’s has over 400 pupils aged 2 to 13 and has achieved 57 scholarships over the past 2 years; academic, sport, music, computer science, art & DT and all rounder. Tonbridge, King’s Canterbury, Benenden, Sevenoaks, Harrow, Marlborough, Eastbourne & Eton are just some of the names adorning the Scholarship boards. The school boasts a full orchestra, competes nationally in both girls’ and boys’ sports and has a built a new Science block as well as new Art and Engineering/Design/Technology classrooms in the last 4 years. The ethos of Saint Ronan’s is underpinned by the “Ronian Characteristics”Curiosity, Co-operation, Empathy, Perseverance,
Imagination & Awareness - which are celebrated in every aspect of school life. Joe Lewis would like people to “recognise an Old Ronian by his/her good character, integrity, ability to navigate life in a moral and confident manner with a good dollop of humour.”
Joe is keen to build on the success of his predecessor, “taking over a successful prep school allows no time for complacency. Our families are now having to invest more, financially, than ever and we need to ensure that we are providing the best possible holistic education and pastoral care for their children.” Joe has moved from a Senior School background so has first hand experience of what he is preparing the children for. Joe teaches Year 5 so that he can best advise parents on the most suitable school for their child, and family as a whole. Joe also has Year 8s for lunch in his study to allow them a chance to discuss school life and engage in topical conversations.
School council is made up of a pupil from each year group of the prep school. There are monthly

meetings with Joe, Milly and Ross Andrew (Deputy Head Pastoral) where the children feedback on what is going well, what could be better and any changes or improvements they would like to see. Milly says “When you can say yes, you should. Then when you say no, they know that there’s a good reason”.
The “magic” of Saint Ronan’s is widely spoken of. Allowing children their childhood whilst preparing them thoroughly for Senior School. The school prides itself on allowing pupils to get their fill of the outdoors – climbing trees, the school farm, mountain biking club, so that they are better able to focus on the academic rigour that is provided in the classroom.
The parental body at Saint Ronan’s is loyal and invested in the school’s success. Joe speaks of a “collaborative, communicative relationship: parent, teacher, child. With the child at the centre of all that we do.” Parental events include Supper Club, Autumn and Christmas fairs, Founders Day and Firework Night at which one of the current parents DJd.
Saint Ronan’s is welcoming, on entering the school you can feel the pride those inside have for it and they are keen to make you feel a part of it all. Children chat happily to visitors and staff are eager to share insights about the school and how it works. The family feel, which is so important to Joe and Milly, ensures that every child feels nurtured and supported; able to flourish having been allowed to take risks, build confidence and explore their passions.
PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS
The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions
Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.
Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated –as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.
The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.
“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”
In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.
The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.
Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.
“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.
Cooperation & Compassion Allow Our Community to Thrive
Rosemead wins prestigious national award – Dulwich’s leading prep school triumphs at ISA awards for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion
Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery is delighted to reveal it has won an award at the prestigious Independent Schools Association (ISA) Awards 2024.
The school, located in the heart of Dulwich, has been awarded for Excellence and Innovation in Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion at the ceremony which took place in November at the ISA Autumn Conference in Birmingham.
Speaking about the award, Head Graeme McCafferty explained: ‘The whole school is thrilled to receive this award from the ISA. This recognition reaffirms our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and I couldn’t be prouder of our school’s achievement.
‘At Rosemead, we are devoted to creating an inclusive, safe environment through quality first teaching and adapting resources. Cooperation and

compassion allow our community to thrive. We aim to collaborate with our whole community to broaden our children’s experience and make learning accessible for all. Our goal is to create a sense of involvement, harmony, unity and membership.’
Rudolf Eliott Lockhart, Chief Executive Officer of the Independent Schools Association (ISA), added:
“Once again, the ISA Awards have been a celebration of the innovative approaches to education from across the full range of our diverse membership. The broad selection of represented categories reflects the breadth of accomplishments by our schools; there is the potential for every type of school to excel within them.
‘A place among the finalists, as well as being highly commended, is a great achievement. This year featured an impressive range of entries, and the final nominees were strong.’
Last year, the school announced a merger with St Dunstan’s College joining St Dunstan’s Education Group.
St Dunstan’s Group Head, Nick Hewlett, said: ‘The whole community is delighted with this ISA award for Rosemead. The award rightly recognises the outstanding work and ongoing commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion at the school.
‘Bringing our schools together has been a wonderful opportunity, allowing our staff and students to work closer together, learning from one another and enhancing our students’ educational journeys.’
This is the second prestigious award for Rosemead. Earlier this year, the school won best Improvements in EDIB (Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging) at the Education Choices Awards. A spokesperson for the Education Choices Awards added: ‘We have been really impressed with the work that schools have been getting up to this year in order to envelop Equality, Diversity and Inclusion into their curriculums and work, and it has been really tough to decide each winner.’
The two awards follow the school’s ISI inspection that took place last year, and saw Rosemead become

one of the first prep schools in the country to receive a ‘significant strength’ in its findings.
‘A highly customised approach to every pupil’s academic progress is a significant strength of the school,’ the report explained. ‘A customised learning programme in mathematics, English and reasoning caters for pupils in Year 4 and above. This, supported by an extensive enrichment programme and much support for individuals, impacts on all groups of pupils, enabling them to make good and often rapid progress over time.’
Rosemead’s early years’ provision was also praised in the summary findings. ‘Leaders in the early years effectively ensure staff have high expectations of the behaviour and achievement of children,’ the report found. ‘The positive relationships between adults and children in the early years help children settle in quickly and feel safe and happy.’
It added: ‘Children in the early years achieve well from their varied starting points. Adults engage with the children effectively and use appropriate questioning to develop children’s vocabulary and understanding. Children from an early age become confident speakers and develop their reading skills well.’

ST DUNSTAN’S REMEMBERS School community comes together to honour the fallen
St Dunstan’s College annual Service of Remembrance took place on Monday 11 November 2024.
The service was opened in the Great Hall with an opening prayer by Reverend Colin Boswell, which was followed by a reading of Anthem for Doomed Youth by Simon Stanford-Tuck, son of Dunstonian and World War II hero Robert Stanford-Tuck (‘33) who was imprisoned in POW Stalaag III, immortalised in the film The Great Escape with Steve McQueen. Head of School, Yasmin and Junior School Head Pupil, Toby, then delivered a powerful reading of MCMXIV by Philip Larkin. Following the Chapel

St Dunstan’s Rivers of Poppies display was once again installed at the front of the College featuring more than 750 poppies. The display is made up of two rivers of poppies hanging down the side of the front building.
A day earlier, St Dunstan’s College Combined Cadet Force (CCF) attended the annual Lewisham Remembrance Parade, marking an especially proud moment as they formed a colour party for the first time. In full CCF uniform, the cadets marched alongside service personal and other community groups, paying tribute to the servicemen and women who sacrificed so much.
Speaking about the parade, Contingent Commander Richard Davies said: ‘Leading their respective sections congratulations go to both the Coxswain and RSM who demonstrated great leadership and kept the sections marching in time. Special mention also goes to Imani and Alyssa who laid wreaths on behalf of the College after everyone observed a moment of silence, reflecting St Dunstan’s deep commitment to remembrance and to instilling values of respect and service in the next generation.’
Next year, St Dunstan’s CCF will travel to Ypres, Belgium, to take part in the daily Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate Memorial.

Bridging Cultures and Building Friendships
Celebrating Our Korean Exchange Programme
At Bishop Challoner School, we believe in fostering a global outlook among our students, and our recent partnership with Ja Yeon School in South Korea has been an inspiring step in this direction. Through this cultural exchange, our Year 8 and Year 10 students have had the invaluable opportunity to connect with their peers in South Korea, experience each other’s cultures firsthand, and develop lasting friendships.
Recently, we welcomed a group of Year 8 students from Ja Yeon School for an immersive day of learning and fun. Each Korean student was paired with a Bishop Challoner Year 8 buddy, allowing them to share perspectives and form a personal connection. Together, they experienced some quintessentially British traditions, starting with a traditional lunch of fish and chips – a novel taste for many of our visitors! After lunch, our students introduced their Korean friends to the game of cricket, giving them a feel for a sport close to British hearts.
Creativity was also a significant part of the day, with an art lesson where students explored cultural symbols and exchanged ideas on artistic techniques.
“This Korean exchange programme is just one of the many unique initiatives we offer at Bishop Challoner, dedicated to enriching our students’ lives beyond the classroom.”
THE DETAILS
If you would like to find out more about the school, please visit www.bishopchallonerschool.com
To conclude the visit, both schools exchanged gifts, a heartfelt gesture symbolising respect and mutual appreciation. This first-hand experience of each other’s traditions is invaluable in promoting cross-cultural understanding, and we’re thrilled that our students will continue to keep in touch with their new Korean friends. They are eagerly looking forward to the next phase, which will see our students visiting Sa Jeong School in South Korea.
Our Year 10 students have also been engaging with another Korean school through regular Zoom calls, building connections from afar. These online sessions have helped both groups improve their language skills, share school life, and discuss common interests, creating a meaningful bond across continents. In 2025, they will finally meet in person, further strengthening these online friendships.
This Korean exchange programme is just one of the many unique initiatives we offer at Bishop Challoner, dedicated to enriching our students’ lives beyond the classroom. From cultural exchanges to hands-on community projects, we aim to cultivate a diverse, inclusive environment where students can learn and grow as global citizens. We are immensely proud of their enthusiasm and look forward to seeing these connections flourish.
A focus on Kindness & Mental Health
As one of our school values, kindness runs through everything we do at Bickley Park. Our annual Kindness and Mental Health Week is a reminder of our continued focus on fostering care, respect, and emotional well-being throughout our school community. Throughout the week, each of our year groups take part in activities designed to make kindness tangible and meaningful. From sharing the joy of music with the residents of local care homes in Bickley, to developing connections through reading with neighbouring schools.
Our Values
We also spend time understanding Mental Health, removing any stigma felt when discussing this important topic and helping our children to develop the confidence and vocabulary to do so. A wonderful selection of books in our libraries also reflects our commitment to supporting discussions about kindness, friendship, and mental health.
A focus on giving during the week not only supports those in need but also nurtures empathy and compassion —qualities that are vital for children’s mental and emotional growth.
This year, we’d like to say thank you to the incredible generosity of our community, for all the amazing contributions of Advent Calendars for The Purple Pantry and essential items such as water bottles, woolly hats, scarves, and socks for Kent Kindness. It was fantastic to see these donations grow over the week and they have now been distributed to these very worthy causes.
We see examples of showing respect and looking after each other in school everyday and we are proud that our children extend these values way beyond the school gates.
Preparing children to reach their potential Community is very much part of our wellrounded learning experience at Bickley Park which encompasses the Four Quadrants of Learning - Academics, Arts, Community, and Sports and Outdoor Learning.
It is this firm commitment to all-round success which led the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) judging Bickley Park as ‘excellent’ in all areas in March 2023, the highest possible grading for an Independent School.
But don’t just take my word for it – come and see for yourself. I would love to meet you and show you around.
Tom Quilter – Headmaster, Bickley Park

Opening the door to your child’s future
A guide to School Open Days
As we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.
TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A SCHOOL OPEN DAY…
•Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting
•It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly
•Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there.
•Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally
•Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.
QUESTIONS TO ASK AT A SCHOOL OPEN DAY….
Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school.
•How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam?
•Are there high expectations and high academic achievements?
•Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too
“Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important”
compelled in pressure)
•What are the classroom sizes?
•What is expected of my child with regard to homework?
•Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia?
•Is there a bullying policy?
•What lunchtime meals are available?
•What sports and music facilities are available?
•What after school clubs and trips are available?
•How many pupils branch out into further education?
After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.

OIN THE COUNTRY
Your local store for all outdoor clothing for the whole family, plus shooting accessories, leather goods, dog training equipment, and much more.
wner, Gail Thomas, explains how she got involved in this thriving business based in Badlesmere, just a few miles from Lenham on the Ashford Road.
Gail says: ‘I live at Eastwell Park, where my partner is the head keeper. Originally I was working for a national house builder selling houses but took voluntary redundancy. ‘
‘Enjoying a brief period of being a lady of leisure, I popped into a local shop, the Kent Wool Growers, for a pair of Wellington boots. Whilst there trying on boots, I chatted to the assistant who told me he had just got himself a new job and
would be leaving. He then mentioned that they hadn’t filled the vacancy and that the job would be perfect for me!
And so I ended up working for Kent Wool Growers for 7 years; a great place, very interesting and with great customers, fantastic characters and never a dull moment. This is where I learnt all about clothing, footwear and – most importantly – good customer service.
Chatting to a friend whilst having lunch in my local, I mentioned that I might like to go it alone and open my own shop. She then told me about possible premises that were only a few miles from home! The very next morning I viewed and secured it straight away. So started the ‘In The Country’ venture here in Badlesmere. Over the years I have added to the stock and am proud to say, I offer a fantastic range of clothing, footwear and accessories for men, women and children – oh! And mustn’t forget the dogs!
The shop has become a thriving business and has been open for over 8 years now. I can honestly say it was the best decision I have made and have never regretted it for a moment.’

From nervous beginners to confident swimmers
Building confidence through swimming at Sevenoaks Leisure Centre
Local families are discovering the life-changing benefits of professional swimming lessons at Sevenoaks Leisure Centre, with a pioneering programme transforming children’s confidence and physical skills. Everyone Active, which operates Sevenoaks Leisure Centre in partnership with Sevenoaks District Council, has established itself as more than just a swimming school – it’s become a cornerstone of community fitness and youth development.
Long-term success stories are emerging from the programme. Adam Jaworski, a local parent, credits the centre’s approach for his son Shane’s remarkable journey. “From his first lessons at just 4 years old, Shane developed a genuine love for swimming,” Jaworski explained. “Now 18, his water confidence and technique are a direct result of the centre’s professional coaching.”
Sue Moore-Fay, another local parent, highlights the social benefits. “Beyond technique, the lessons have given my daughter Vivian a chance to build stamina and make friends outside her school circle,” she said.
“We are a small, loyal team that put our swimmers first,” says Mark Horne, Swimming Coach and Swim Manager at Sevenoaks Leisure Centre. “This allows us to not only know all the children by first name, but also the parents, achieving a family-first approach. It’s completely natural for parents to be nervous for their child to begin swimming lessons but, as not all children learn at the same rate, we adapt our lessons as needed for each child, suggesting one to one sessions if needed.
“Swimming is not only a great form of low impact sport for people with a wide range of conditions, but is one of the most important life skills we can teach children - not only as a very inclusive sport, but as a safety skill which will stay with them for life.”.

Collagen induction therapy
Microneedling is a gentle, minimally invasive aesthetic treatment that stimulates the skin’s natural healing processes.
Ultrafine needles move over the skin to create tiny, carefully controlled ‘micro-injuries’.
Microneedling’s unique rupture and repair process stimulates skin cell turnover, and the production of new collagen and elastin fibres –hence being dubbed ‘collagen induction therapy’.
This technique is renowned for its rejuvenating results - improving skin texture, including scarring. You can experience Potenza at our clinic in Sevenoaks.
Radiofrequency microneedling
Potenza combines microneedling with radiofrequency waves, to penetrate the top layer of skin and enhance the regenerative benefits.

Keeping well this Winter
The cold weather and winter bugs can be troublesome at any age, and they affect us more as we get older. Here are a few things you can do to stay warm and well this season:
Move regularly
A little bit of activity now and then is a great way to help you keep warm. Try not to sit still for more than an hour at a time.
Eat for warmth
Nutritious and warm food and drinks help raise your body temperature. Aim to have one hot meal a day and plenty of hot drinks throughout.
Get your vaccinations
Protection is always better than cure. Ask your GP or pharmacist for advice and plan time to get your jabs.
Stock up on essentials
Make sure you have plenty of pantry food and medications in case bad weather stops you from getting out and about. Have a water bottle and warm layers at the ready in the event your heating is interrupted.
The arrival of Winter can prompt concerns about our own wellbeing or that of our older loved ones.
For more tips to keep well, and how to know if more support is needed, visit our resources at www.greensleeves.org.uk/WarmthOfCare
And if you’d like to explore support options for yourself or a loved one, give a no-obligation call to one of our Kent homes near you (see advert).

Arlo & Jacob Sofas Put Their Modern Twist on a ‘70s Classic
British furniture makers, Arlo & Jacob are known for reinterpreting classic designs for the modern era. They tend towards a timeless effect which incorporates nods to celebrated silhouettes of the past. Their brand new Felix collection beautifully encapsulates this approach, looking to a ‘70s find to spark inspiration.
Arlo & Jacob’s Owners, husband and wife design duo, Mark and Julie Smith stumbled across a vintage ‘70s club chair which oozed plush and pillowy comfort. They loved the scale and proportion, as well as the modern design inflection. So, got to work making the brand’s own iteration, reworking the vintage version in an elevated vision.
The lounge-style Felix armchair is the picture of modernity, with a plush wrap-around seat which envelops you the second you sit. The body comes together in two parts: a sprung seat base for support plus the back and arms to offer a warm hug. A low profile and slim frame impart a thoroughly modern feel, filled out by fluffy down to keep you in comfort across many hours of languid lounging.
Each element comes together by hand in their factory in Nottinghamshire and the team has even engineered these designs to be easily disassembled and reassembled. So, it’s a great choice for trickier spaces which call for some extra manoeuvring by Arlo & Jacob’s in-house delivery team.
When it comes to upholstery, Felix is an exceptionally smooth operator. Cleverly concealed sewing details complement the simplicity of this design, creating a nearly seamless union between components. Pleated stitching stretches along the
side and bottom edging, meeting a feather-topped foam seat which offers the final word in comfort. Felix’s soft, curvaceous cocoon is tempered by geometric detailing, like hand-turned spherical feet. Arlo & Jacob have scaled these up to add a dash of drama and a pronounced nod to the design’s ‘70s-inspired beginnings. They offer a strong and sturdy foundation, while making Felix a bold piece of statement furniture.
Felix is available in 5 sizes, plus a compact footrest. The stand-out spherical feet come in 4 stain options to suit your space. Plus, true to Arlo & Jacob form, this design is endlessly personalisable in a vast array of fabrics. The brand is putting down roots in Tunbridge Wells during December, opening a showroom in Mount Pleasant Road. Pop in to explore Felix alongside a spectrum of other handcrafted furniture collections, with everything made right here in the UK.

PRECIOUS TONES: Jewel inspired furniture
Delve into the autumnal treasure chest with a bevy of soul achingly-rich, ultra-deep jewel tones that are adding some glamour to our interiors this season. Who needs gold, silver, platinum, or pearls when you can embrace the mesmerising allure of jewel tones?
As the days grow shorter, we’re all about the deep, sumptuous hues of sapphires, emeralds and amethysts. These gemstone tones bring with them an undeniable sense of opulence, injecting rich colour into the home that elevates even the simplest of spaces as well as the murkiest of moods. An ideal antidote to the darker months, jewel shades not only exude luxury but also add a refreshing, mood-boosting vibrancy to rooms – far from the ordinary blues, greens, and purples, these tones offer an ultra-luxe take on colour that feels anything but traditional.
Sapphire, with its deep, spellbinding blue, speaks of sophistication. Unlike classic dark blues, which can be cooler or more flat, sapphire tones add drama and elegance to a space. Whether in textiles, accent pieces, or larger furniture, sapphire commands attention without overpowering, creating a serene-yet-stately ambiance. Its richness exudes grandeur, evoking images of sparkling crowns and heirloom jewellery as well as midnight skies and the depths of the ocean.
Emerald, with its lush, natural quality, exudes a refreshing sense of vitality that echoes the beauty of nature. It’s a shade that’s simultaneously vibrant and grounding, bringing a verdant-yet-sumptuous mood to interiors. Especially effective in spaces which want to evoke rejuvenation and calmness such as living rooms or bedrooms, emerald brings nature indoors with an indulgent twist.
Amethyst offers a sweeter, more playful approach to the jewel palette. This rich purple hue introduces a touch of whimsy while maintaining an overall elevated and sophisticated ambiance, adding soft yet striking energy to a space. Whether used on accessories or larger focal points, amethyst in the home creates an enlivening sense of creativity and flair, its luxurious yet gentle vibe making it ideal for spaces which want to blend comfort with a touch of drama.
Finally the rouge jewel in the crown. A colour long associated with royalty and riches, Ruby. A touch of scarlett magic can light a spark of excitement in any setting. Although its fiery flare often demands that it is used sparingly, ruby is the lifeblood of the home and cultivates a feeling of warmth whichever room it is used in. It is to be used at the ultimately homely hue and is best placed among the showstopping statement pieces. chaplins.co.uk
Storage Solutions for Everyone
Schmidt have a huge number of storage solutions for every wallet
3different types of larder, extra wide/deep and high base units (3D fit), floor to ceiling options, and up to 3 made-to-measure units (from certain ranges) at no extra cost. Larders: The open-shelf cabinet is a good, solid entry level cabinet with adjustable shelves, the Pantry cabinet gives easy access via shelving and door storage, while the Larder cabinet is the ultimate in storage – full extension, individual pull out drawers mean that everything is instantly accessible and visible, with no void necessary above the shelf to lift items out.
Evolution 130: Instead of the normal 5-drawer base unit, Schmidt have raised the height of their standard base unit to 78cm (usually 72cm) which has enabled them to fit an extra drawer into the unit. A 6-drawer format means it is much easier to create a streamlined kitchen as well: 1 deep drawer & 3 shallow; 3 medium; 1 deep, 1 medium and 1 shallow – the options are many, but the horizontal lines will flow in perfect symmetry with other units in the kitchen. The extra height unit also caters for the taller profile of most kitchen users today.
3D Fit: With plinth heights from 7cm to 20cm, Unit heights from 52cm to 91cm, 4 different depths,
and bespoke widths to the nearest millimetre, every single inch of available space in the kitchen can be utilised. Whether you are 5 foot nothing, or 6 foot 7 inches – the height can work for you! Schmidt’s standard 67.5cm base unit is joined by 3 other depths: 35, 62.5 and a jumbo 70cm unit – which can achieve up to 26% more storage, and of course more worktop space as well.
Pull out drawers mean no more scrabbling about on hands and knees for that seldom used item at the back of the cupboard. 3 x 600mm width Jumbo units, 780mm high and 700mm depth for extra storage.

Effortless ways to add a touch of luxury to your bathroom.
With bathroom design specialist Ripples.
Think of your bathroom as your sanctuary. This is a place where you will be spending time by yourself; be it your morning routine, an evening bath, or your skincare ritual. Creating this sort of space can be easy to accomplish without having to do too much work. So, if you’re thinking of re-designing your bathroom, then our Senior Designer Matildafrom Ripples Tunbridge Wells, has a few tips and tricks to consider when making those important design decisions.
Lighting
Feature lighting would be my first go-to. This could be simple underlighting or recess lighting up to pendant lights. Choosing great lighting gives a simple bathroom a much more luxurious feel, especially if you can opt for stunning wall lights, or multiple layers of light which can add additional intrigue.
Brassware
Special finish brassware really can give an exceptional touch. This style of brassware is generally more expensive than standard chrome, however, if you can find options which are within your budget, these items will elevate a bathroom. I would always encourage you to speak to a designer
about special finish brassware as it is important to go for higher quality as it’s handled every day, and you’ll quickly tell if it’s not up to scratch.
Tiles
A standout tile will always elevate a bathroom. Whether it is the pattern, shape, or material, choosing a tile that compliments the room will add a touch of luxury.
Simplicity can often work best when it comes to using tiles to provide a luxury feel. I would suggest choosing one style of tile and using it only in essential areas. For example, behind the basin and within the shower area, really works well and allows you to use most of your budget on components that are of better quality.
Heating
Underfloor heating would be my big go-to. Providing an extra level of warmth to a bathroom can give a level of comfort to the room. Even if it is limited to the shower area, it is a real indulgence for the feet.

CHOICE, QUALITY & DESIGN
Want to enhance your bathroom space but finding the compact area hard to work with? Fear not, as there are plenty of ways to utilise smaller bathrooms, including everything you need to make the room appear larger.
Taking advantage of things like natural light, corners and clever storage is important and will help your compact bathroom to feel less restricted. There are ways to make the small space feel bigger without having to spend a fortune on knocking down your wall to fit a new window.
One of these is to create an illusion of space, install mirrors onto your bathroom wall, as this will reflect light well creating the effect of an open window. In addition to this if you are looking to open up the space in your bathroom, go for a mirror that is back lit, at the same time helping to create a minimalistic vibe in your bathroom.
One of the reasons why small bathrooms can feel even smaller is the lack of storage. If you own a wide array of bathroom essentials (such as skincare products, hair products and oral products), consider investing in a shelf to hold all your soaps and bottles. While it might be the obvious choice to go with shower curtains, sometimes traditional isn’t always better. To make your bathroom space feel more open, consider forgoing the curtains and choose a clear glass screen to separate your shower area from the rest.
Instead of separating tile patterns for your bathroom floor and your shower, use a consistent tile type to tile your floor, as having unbroken patterns creates a greater perception of depth, making your bathroom feel more spacious.
Your bathroom is a precious and private space, and chances are, you are going to spend a significant amount of time in it, so why not invest in building it up to look exactly the way you want it? You don’t need a mansion to make a masterpiece, and we hope that our tips have guided you in working with whatever limited space you have, to create the stylish space you always wanted.
If you are looking for more inspiration to create that tranquil bathroom space, you’ll find plenty of superb design ideas for small bathrooms (and even large ones) at our Eltham and Biggin Hill showrooms.
