THE WONDERFUL JAMES OF ST ALBANS

James of St Albans is a small family business on the historic and beautiful George Street. Established over sixty years ago by Lionel James and is carried on today by his son Steve (pictured) and daughter Wendy.

In the mid 1950’s, when St Albans was a major antique centre, James of St Albans focused on selling period antique furniture, porcelain, artwork and metalware.

The business is now sadly extremely rare. James of St Albans has weathered many changes and fashion trends and today sells a mixture of antique and collectable items alongside decorative retail goods. The stock is wide and varied with an opportunity to pick up a bargain piece, especially with Christmas approaching.

Also available are delightful mohair bears by Steiff , Herman and Grisly, all at reduced prices which would make excellent gifts for bear lovers this Christmas.

If you are looking for the ultimate antique, an excellent selection of fossils from around

the world! People are always surprised that the starting prices are so modest for an item of such enormous age. Fossils make wonderful gifts, especially for landmark birthdays; after all, who can feel old confronted by a beautifully cut and polished Madagascan Ammonite that’s over 150 million years old!

Please pay a visit on your next trip to St Albans. The stock is vast and varied, and includes antiquarian maps and prints, Wedgewood pieces, Poole pottery, Anita Harris pottery, Winstanley cats, pewter hollow ware and candlesticks as well as hand painted miniatures, realistic Hansa plush animals, tapestry hangings and cushions, beautiful Tiffany style lamps, smaller furniture items (both antique and refurbished) and much, much more. James of St Albans also offer the unique service of table lining, which is the laying down, tooling and gold embossing of leather tops for tables, desks, lap boxes and the like. Customers are always surprised at the reasonable cost of the service.

“If

you are looking for the ultimate antique, an excellent selection of fossils from around the world!”

Unsure of the Setting? Let the Diamond Inspire the Design

Embrace a personalised approach to engagement rings, where the diamond leads the way for today’s couples.

Choosing an engagement ring is a significant milestone, blending emotion, tradition, and personal style. At Baker Brothers, we understand the importance of this special moment and are here to guide you in creating a ring that captures the magic of your proposal and becomes a cherished heirloom for generations.

The heart of any engagement ring is the diamond itself, and choosing a loose diamond adds a special touch of romance and individuality to the process. Unlike selecting a pre-set ring, picking a loose diamond allows you to create something truly magical, where every detail reflects your shared story. Each diamond is unique, with its own sparkle, personality, and journey. By exploring loose diamonds, you’re not just choosing a gemstone, you are selecting the centrepiece of a lifelong symbol of your love.

At Baker Brothers, we specialise in loose diamonds, offering a carefully curated selection to help you find a gemstone as unique as your love story. Our expert team, all professionally trained in gemmology, will guide you through the 4Cs – cut, clarity, colour, and carat – using a jeweller’s loupe for a hands-on experience. We believe in educating our customers, showing you how to evaluate each diamond’s brilliance, inclusions, and light reflection, making the selection process personal and informed.

With our expertise and commitment to transparency, we ensure you choose a diamond that matches your vision and meets your expectations for quality, beauty and budget, whether you’re seeking flawless clarity or a distinctive, characterful gemstone.

Once you’ve selected the perfect diamond, attention turns to the mount, which frames and secures the gemstone while defining the overall design. The mount should enhance the diamond’s character and reflect the wearer’s personality. Whether you prefer a classic solitaire, vintage-inspired style, or contemporary halo, Baker Brothers offers a range of options crafted with precision. Our team ensures every detail is considered, from the choice of metal - platinum, white gold, or yellow gold, to the practicality of the setting for everyday wear. We understand that an engagement ring is more than jewellery; it’s a lasting symbol of your commitment.

Winter proposals hold a special charm. The season’s warmth, twinkling lights, and family gatherings create the perfect backdrop for asking life’s most important question. Choosing Baker Brothers for your engagement ring adds another layer of confidence to this moment. With over a century of heritage in fine jewellery, we are known for our expertise, quality craftsmanship, and dedication to personalised service.

By purchasing a loose diamond and designing the mount together, you create a one-of-akind piece that reflects your relationship and individuality. Baker Brothers makes this process seamless and memorable, offering a tailored experience to help you craft a ring that embodies love and commitment.

Whether you’re planning a proposal this year, or marking another special occasion, an engagement ring from Baker Brothers is more than a symbol - it’s a legacy in the making. Let us help you celebrate your love story with a ring that will be treasured forever.

Brad & Dills

Brad & Dills is the beloved neighbourhood coffee house that’s taking Hertfordshire by storm. Founded by friends, Alex Rollings and Olly Denley, this local gem offers delicious New York style bagels and exceptional specialty coffee.

What started as a grab & go concept from a retro mobile van three years ago, Brad & Dills now has four locations in Harpenden, St Albans and Hertford. The menu is delightfully succinct and focuses on - you guessed it - bagels and coffees, made fresh on site using the best local ingredients and baddest coffee in town.

Each coffee house has its own local feel, perfectly tailored to its community. Harpenden is the original grab & go site situated on the High Street that quickly gained popularity for its delicious coffees alone. More recently, Brad & Dills opened a 60-seat restaurant at Rothamsted Park in Harpenden. This new site is complete with an all-day brunch and cocktail menu and offers private hire and events.

Located in an old Swift Dry Cleaner’s on London Road, their St Albans branch has retained its charming laundrette-inspired aesthetics. It’s also home to the recently launched Swift Nights, where guests can enjoy rotating wine and cocktails on

Friday evenings. Finally, their Hertford site blends seamlessly with the old-town architecture, bringing a fresh, modern energy to the Market Square. Guests can expect welcoming staff who are ready to dish out mouthwatering bagels and delicious coffee decorated with latte art. Signatures include the Reuben (pastrami, emmental, sauerkraut, pickles and a secret sauce), Egg ‘n’ Cheese (guests like to stuff theirs with bacon and jalapenos as an extra add-on), as well as a house favourite, Classic Salmon with cream cheese and pickles. Their Pollo Picante is the star of the show, featuring air fried chicken, nduja mayo, melted mozzarella topped with crispy onions. With something for everyone, vegan options are available and are just as flavoursome.

No visit to Brad & Dills is complete without trying their famous flat white. Crafted with coffee sourced from a single estate farm, this delightful brew offers a sweet and nutty profile, complemented by rich caramel and chocolate undertones.

Built on a passion for serving their community, Brad & Dills has become a Hertfordshire staple. Alex and Olly look forward to welcoming both new and returning guests in 2025 as they continue to expand their love for bagels and coffee across the county.

Brad & Dills is available for delivery on Deliveroo.

A NEXT- GEN SOCIAL SPACE

The Hub on Verulam, a next generation social space has embedded itself into the St Albans and surrounding communities since it’s opening 2 years ago. Created by founders Alex Addison and Hannah Petrouis, located at 5 Verulam Road, the reimagined 6,000 sq. ft space has been designed to challenge what we think we know about hospitality, offering lifestyle interiors, coworking space, informal dining, event space and 2 screening rooms. It offers a new take on hospitality that is focused on community, experience and sustainability to meet the needs of today’s market. On site facilities include;

• The Open Kitchen: an intimate 30 cover restaurant with brunch, lunch and dinner options.

• The Yard: an all-season outdoor space, covered and heated in winter months equipped with an outdoor bar.

• Two screening rooms; The Terrace and The Box, providing a luxurious setting with 50 bookable seats to watch movies, sporting events and documentaries.

• Co-working memberships and a private members workspace.

The restaurant’s menu has been stripped of nutritionally lacking pub classics and filled with hearty and healthier brunch dishes, small and large plates. Gone are pints, with beer servings in European schooner glasses alongside a large and innovative low-and-no alcohol offering. With sustainability core to the venue’s offering, food waste from The Hub on Verulam is turned to compost within 24 hours using their on-site commercial composter, affectionately named ‘Colin’.

“Our mission is to shake up the way people socialise – our offering deliberately doesn’t fit in just one box. We’ve created a space to work and play, to watch sports, films, comedy and to learn and create. Yes, we serve 4-5% beers, but we also serve great low ABV options. We serve cocktails, and alongside them you’ll see low alcohol equivalents – no ‘mocktails’ around here – that taste just as good. We serve fresh Cornish day-boat fish, alongside sunday roasts and delicious bar nibbles. It’s all about giving people great options so they can make better choices for the odd, or regular, occasion as they want to.” Alex Addison, Co-Founder.

Aston Martin is proud to present the DB12 Goldfinger Edition, crafted by the ultra-luxury marque’s bespoke personalisation service, Q by Aston Martin, in celebration of 60 years of the iconic association between Aston Martin and the James Bond film franchise.

What has become one of the most notable partnerships in cinematic history began with the release of Goldfinger in 1964, when the Aston Martin DB5 made its silver screen debut. The DB5 went on to become one of the world’s most recognisable cars and a crucial step in the brand’s illustrious ‘DB’ bloodline. Now, the latest evolution in that lineage is getting the 007 treatment.

To mark this historic milestone, just sixty DB12 Goldfinger Editions will be released worldwide, paying tribute to a relationship that has spanned over half of Aston Martin’s illustrious 111-year history.

DB12 GOLDFINGER EDITION

Whilst the DB5 that featured in Goldfinger was equipped with all the gadgets needed to escape Bond’s adversaries, the DB12 Goldfinger Edition is focused on providing a more indulgent James Bond driving experience, incorporating subtle touches from the Goldfinger film.

Presented in the iconic Silver Birch paint colour synonymous with the DB5 in Goldfinger, the DB12 Goldfinger Edition establishes an immediate statement. triking 21” multi-spoke wheels with a unique silver colour with a diamond treatment finish are complemented by black brake calipers, bespoke gold side strakes and a unique Aston Martin logo in silver with a black enamel. Crowned with a bright chrome ‘Q’ fender badge gives confirmation that this DB12 has received some truly special touches.

Inside this special edition, the leather Sports Plus seats are finished in the classic DB5 fluted style with an intricate Prince of Wales check perforation pattern, in a nod to a classic James Bond suit. This pattern extends to both the door inserts and the headliner, as well as being etched onto a unique treadplate. A polished sill plaque adorns the Goldfinger 60th anniversary logo.

Adding an elevated level of ultra-luxury to the interior of the car and awaiting the driver’s touch is 18k Gold Plated interior accents, decorating the drive mode rotary dial and the roller controls, as well as the notched gear selector which takes design inspiration from the golden tracking device used by Bond in the film. A subtle nod for Bond aficionados is the ’eight of hearts’ embroidered onto the drivers’ sun visor, which references the playing card seen in last draw during the famous

Miami pool scene in Goldfinger.

DB12 was the first of Aston Martin’s next generation of sports cars to showcase the marques new infotainment system, designed and developed in-house using state-of-the-art technology.

Offering the perfect balance between touchscreen controls and tactile physical switches, this is the first infotainment system built in-house at Aston Martin, which has allowed the brand to provide a uniquely bespoke system for entertainment and navigation. When driving a Bond inspired DB12, occupants need a soundtrack to match and as such, the Goldfinger Edition also comes with the Bowers & Wilkins halo audio system as standard

The Aston Martin DB12 was the first of the next generation of sportscars from Aston Martin. Since its 2023 debut, the super tourer has been joined by the new Vantage, DBX707 and the newly unveiled Vanquish.

First deliveries of this unique offering will commence in Q2 2025.

Q BY ASTON MARTIN

DB12 Goldfinger Edition has been created by the marques in-house design experts at Q by Aston Martin; a personalisation and bespoke service – much like ‘Q Branch’ in the Bond films, that delivers endless possibilities. By accessing the skills of Q by Aston Martin’s designers and craftspeople, customers are invited to take a unique personal commissioning journey; one that encompasses everything from a single small distinguishing detail to full-scale engineering and production of entirely bespoke components. Nothing is out of reach with the design team with endless possibilities to make their car a true one of a kind.

claridges.co.uk

Claridge’s, London’s legendary Mayfair hotel, has long been the place to go for oenophiles looking to enjoy an exquisite glass or rare vintage in beautiful surroundings. Claridge’s Wine Cellar is an elegantly designed space dedicated to the art of viniculture. The temperature-controlled space is designed to showcase the extraordinary collection of more than 1,000 wines and champagnes, each selected by the iconic hotel’s Head of Wine Sebastian Morice, alongside Davies and Brook’s Gabriel Di Bella. There is also a one-of-a-kind spirit collection

selected by Head of Claridge’s Bars, George Raju. Guests are encouraged to spend time browsing with wine experts on hand to discuss the collection and recommend a bottle to invest in, to enjoy in your suite or simply to take home for dinner.

As you would expect with such a vast collection, there is an exceptional range across vintages and regions. From extremely rare ‘unicorn wines’ (as they are known in the trade) – such as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet Grand Cru 2013 – to classic favourites from the hotel’s famous menus, including Château Lagrezette and Domaine de Trevallon 1998, with bottles from both iconic estates and lesser-known producers.

The Wine Cellar allows connoisseurs to journey from the Loire Valley’s blush rosés and aromatic Alsace whites, to the cask-aged reds of Spain, Italy and South America. The collection also includes sweet and fortified varieties, prestige Champagne Magnums and Jeroboams and rare ports such as Quinta do Noval Nacional.

Meanwhile, a carefully edited selection of spirits celebrates the small batch and the singular, from tropical aged rums to distilleries putting a unique spin on classic gin production. Completing the Wine Cellar is an edited selected of gifts for wine connoisseurs and collectors, from bespoke glassware and elegant decanters to rare books and accessories.

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS… THE DECORATIVE FAIR

21-26 January 2025, Battersea Park, SW11

Discover extraordinary, beautiful, distinctive, useful things for interiors, exteriors and everyday joy. Launched specifically for the interiors market in 1985 by a dealer in decorative antiques, The Decorative Fair was an instant hit with designers, decorators and the trade, and is now an internationally renowned thrice-yearly event. It offers an exciting range of stock far broader than any traditional antiques event, in a relaxed and inspiring setting.

The 130 or so exhibitors are chosen to maintain a creative balance of decorative and formal British and European antiques, 20th century design, fine and decorative art from antiquity to the present day, unexpected treasures as well as affordable treats. As well as furniture, lighting and mirrors there’s a generous sprinkling of specialist dealers in rugs and textiles, garden decoration, glassware, silver, ceramics, fine jewellery, folk and tribal art, vintage watches and couture. The Decorative Fair delivers the perfect cross-section of the best antiques and period design on the market today.

The Winter edition of the Fair plays host on the Mezzanine to the London Antique Rug & Textile Art Fair. This annual event features a vibrant, colourful array of antique carpets, rugs, woven art and decorative textiles sourced from across the

world, from simple tribal kelims to exotic eastern designs.

A Foyer display, The Architect’s Study, takes its influence from the backdrops to the Fair’s 2025 marketing campaign, drawn by the leading classical architect George Saumarez Smith, and taken from his wonderful Sketchbooks: Collected Measured Drawings and Architectural Sketches. The presentation will inspire visitors with a showcase of furniture, art and objects suitable for a study, reading or office area. All items come from dealers at the Fair and are for sale.

The Winter Decorative Fair is the perfect occasion to hunt for cosy and chic seasonal favourites: fireplace accessories such as decorative fireguards, irons and grates; club fenders and log containers; mirrors and lighting are always popular in January, they add an extra layer of glow in to a room; comfy upholstered seating such as Howard chairs and Victorian sofas; occasional tables, and glassware.

REFLECTIONS AND ASPIRATIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR at St Margaret’s School

Throughout 2024, life at St Margaret’s has continued to focus on the importance of community, compassion and enrichment and during the course of the last year we have increased our partnerships within the local community. Our goal is to inspire and challenge pupils from across our wider community and we hope to repeat our success this year. St Margaret’s is particularly passionate about giving children opportunities to problem solve and we are keen to continue with hosting events that encourage pupils to work together in a focused way and to come up with thoughtful solutions to real-word problems. It has also been wonderful to welcome more children into our school from inside the local community during 2024.

The last year has also been an exciting year in sports. Earlier in 2024 we hosted the Hertfordshire Primary Cross-Country Championships in association with HSAA (Hertfordshire Schools Athletics Association) at our campus in Bushey.

It is the first time the school has hosted the prestigious sporting event, which is the main primary school county race in the region, also acting as a trial race for top athletes to try out to represent the county at the national championships. The event, which saw 438 Year 5 and Year 6 pupils compete and finish the course, involved four races, all spanning one mile in length. A total of 69 schools from across Hertfordshire took part in the races, including Aldenham School, Codicote, Beechwood Park, Berkhamsted Prep and many more. In addition, we hosted our first High

Performance Programme (HPP) event for our elite young athletes in the summer of 2024 as part of our commitment to nurturing and mentoring sporting talent while giving children opportunities to meet role models from the sporting world. With considerable investment in our arts facilities and the addition of dance this academic year, pupils have been given multiple opportunities to join troupes and participate in high level competitions across the country. Earlier in 2024, we hosted an incredible Expressive Arts Showcase for local parents at the Radlett Centre. The event was a wonderful opportunity for local Herts pupils to perform in front of a live audience and showcase their amazing creative talents. We are excited about 2025 as we continue to invest heavily in our wellbeing provision at St Margaret’s to ensure that every child is given the right support to thrive and learn. We will also continue to boost our co-curricular offering with many new activities as we move into 2025. Finally, St Margaret’s is also celebrating five years as a co-educational school in January 2025 with boys currently making up 39% of the whole school. stmargarets-school.org.uk

PARTRIDGES AWARDED ROYAL WARRANT BY KING CHARLES III

Partridges is honoured to have been awarded a Royal Warrant as Grocers to His Majesty The King. Thirty years ago, in 1994, Partridges was awarded a Royal Warrant to Her Majesty the Queen.

The high-profile store, an independent familyrun food retailer, was founded in 1972 and operates in Duke of York Square, Chelsea and Gloucester Road, Kensington. It sells over 10,000 fine food and drink items and its slogan has always been “Good things for the larder.” Partridges is committed to becoming more sustainable and has achieved carbon neutrality over the past 12 months.

The original Partridges opened on 25th May 1972 by Sir Richard Shepherd in the fashionable area of Sloane Street in Chelsea. It quickly gained a reputation for selling the best quality foods from British producers and importing food and wines from all over the world.

From the early days it was a convenient place to shop, opening long hours and offering a free bicycle delivery service.

In 1981, Sir Richard’s younger brother John Shepherd took over the reins and continues to run the business today. He said... “On behalf of all the staff at Partridges I am absolutely

delighted to announce that we have been awarded a Royal Warrant as Grocers to His Majesty The King. This is an incredible honour, and we are thrilled to have been supplying the Royal Family for over thirty years. We are sure that all our customers will be as excited about this announcement as we are.”

Partridges in Duke of York Square features a café, a delicatessen counter, a weekly Saturday Fine Food Market, mouth-watering food and drink, a huge range of American groceries and a dedicated Eco-Friendly range. Their aim is to reduce Partridges’ impact on the environment and reduce their carbon footprint which in 2024, was reduced by 36.5%.

Firms that hold the prestigious Royal Warrant include grocers like Partridges, silversmiths and jewellers, wheelwrights and gun-makers, glovemakers, luxury car manufacturers, tailors and kiltmakers - the kind of luxury brands befitting of a royal family who reside in palaces and castles. The distinguishing feature, no matter the size of the company, is to provide the highest standards of service…fit for a king.

Japan’s ‘lucky bag’ tradition promises good fortune for 2025

Fukubukuro ‘lucky bags’ are among Japan’s many New Year (oshōgatsu) traditions

NTHE DETAILS

Japan House London’s lucky bags will be available – in store on 101 –111 Kensington High Street, and online on shop.japanhouselondon.uk from 2 January 2025, with three categories available, priced at £25, £65 and £125.

ew Year (oshōgatsu) is Japan’s most important festival, and with it comes the sound of ringing bells as people mark the end of the old year and the beginning of the new with their first visit (hatsumōde) to a Buddhist temple or Shinto shrine. With three days of public holidays, and as businesses begin to reopen, it is the tills that start ringing as shoppers embrace one of Japan’s seasonal traditions, fukubukuro or ‘lucky bags’. The New Year tradition of fukubukuro is to Japan what the January sales are to the UK. Shoppers head to their favourite shops and department stores to pick up fukubukuro (lucky bags) containing an unseen assortment of heavily discounted goods. Keenly anticipated by young and old, stores open early for shoppers who turn out in force to grab a bag at their favourite retailers (even Krispy Kreme has one). It’s impossible to know exactly what’s inside a fukubukuro – and that’s part of the fun. Fans of lucky bags each have

their own techniques for choosing a bag, be that giving it a shake or a squeeze, or perhaps feeling its weight. However all buyers adhere to the policy of no refunds and no exchanges, as well as the most important rule, which is not to peek inside! To break the seal on a lucky bag before buying it is the ultimate taboo.

This New Year, Japan House London’s own lucky bags will surprise and delight. Packaged in an exclusive draw-string cloth bag, this limited-edition fukubukuro is designed to reflect Japan House London’s elegant minimalist aesthetic with gifts that reveal aspects of Japanese cultures, innovation and craft.

ESTABLISHED 49 YEARS IN ROYSTON MOTHER OF THE BRIDE AND GROOM SPECIALIST

New Year fashion resolutions

Here are four ways to revamp your wardrobe for the New Year.

As we head into the new year, the pressure to make a cracking resolution is on, but where’s best to start than with your wardrobe?

From forming a signature style to creating your own fashion mantra – fashion tycoons share their no-brainer fashion resolutions to make for 2025.

MASTER THE LAYERING GAME

One of the greatest style resolutions to make in the new year – that I’m sure we’ve made time and time again – is to streamline your wardrobe.

With that, comes the art of mixing and matching to try and cut down on pointless wardrobe pieces.

“It’s all about unexpected combinations,” says Boohoo’s head of product, Sarah Heaton, who suggests mixing relaxed bottoms with elevated tops – such as the trending barrel-leg jean with a chiffon or ruffled blouse.

Luckily, layering always relies on classic and timeless pieces. “We’ll see people leaning into the nostalgic British aesthetic – like trench coats layered over structured blazers and rugby shirts,” says Lounge’s head of product, Emily Blount.

Layering isn’t just for function – it’s a way to create looks that transition seamlessly from day to night. So mixing together contrasting pieces is a great way to spice up your outfits in 2025.

FIND YOUR SIGNATURE SILHOUETTE

Much like 2024, timeless silhouettes will reign supreme in 2025 – but this year, it’s all about tailoring one uniquely to you.

“We’ve always championed tailoring,” explains British fashion designer and founder of Holland Cooper, Jade Holland Cooper. “The perfect blazer, impeccably cut trousers and a timeless trench coat are wardrobe workhorses.”

To find your staple silhouette, looking beyond classically gendered styles is important, as Holland Cooper notes with the resurgence of more masculine designs, “the three-piece suit is having a real moment,” she explains, which could be down to the current Eighties fashion revival.

“It’s sharp, sophisticated and chic – great for the office, but also an empowering ensemble for women in their day-to-day lives.”

Tailoring is also a great opportunity for experimenting to find your true style, “With tailoring being such a key trend, focus on how it works with your body and colouring,” suggests Blount. “A structured dress or waistcoat can bring elegance along with individuality.”

MASSIMO DUTTI DOUBLEBREASTED 100% WOOL BLAZER CO-ORD, £169 ABERCROMBIE AND FITCH SLOANE LOW RISE TAILORED WIDE LEG PANT - LIGHT TAUPE, £65
ZARA VELVET MIDI DRESS, £29.99
ZARA ZW COLLECTION ROMANTIC BLOUSE, £39.99

So, whether you’re adopting power dressing or adopting a more fluid style – finding your signature silhouette will help make curating outfits a whole lot easier in 2025.

NOD TO TRENDS

When a trend you love comes about, it can be tempting to go all in and revamp your whole wardrobe. But with overconsumption high on everyone’s radar, 2025 may be the year to nod to a trend through more subtle style statements.

“I tend to opt for classics that will remain in fashion whilst also being the perfect staple to style the key trends of the season,” explains Holland Cooper, who uses the example of a trench coat.

When it comes to trends, “fashion is always subjective,” notes Blount, “and everyone has their own interpretation of the fad.

“The key with any fashion trend is to ensure you’re staying true to your personal style, what you feel comfortable in, and what makes you happy.”

The easiest way to nod to trends is to look at those that already encompass items in your wardrobe – such as favourite colours, certain cuts or particular accessories.

ADOPT A FASHION MANTRA

All the fashion greats have one thing in common: their own fashion mantra.

For fashion designer and podcaster Amanda Wakeley OBE, it’s ‘Don’t save for best, dress your best everyday.’

“We all have those incredible pieces that have been in our wardrobe hardly worn that we keep for ‘special occasions’ and then often the moment passes and we wished we had worn them more,” says Wakeley.

“My view is clothes and accessories, for that matter, are not there to hang in a cupboard, they are there to be worn and loved and lived in. HOW TO STAY CHIC IN THE SNOW

Here are expert style tips for coldweather dressing. By Lara Owen

Dressing both stylishly and practically is a tricky task to perfect, but with temperatures forecast to drop further, fashion insiders reveal their top tips for staying warm and looking chic in the snow…

LAYER UP

When it comes to layering, the key lies in quality over quantity. In order to maintain a sleek silhouette, you’ll want to invest in high-quality thermals that allow breathability whilst keeping you warm, and won’t bulk out your outfit. “Opt for thin, fitted base layers and use mid-layers that cinch at the waist, such as belted cardigans or tailored blazers, to define your shape,” says style and trends expert, Karine Laudort.

“Then balance out proportions by pairing oversized outerwear – such as puffer coats or capes – with slim-fitting trousers or leggings.”

DON’T INVEST IN A TREND

It can be tempting to splash out on a new luxe pair of snow boots the moment temperatures drop, but perhaps designer Moon Boots aren’t the way forward for an item you’ll only wear twice a year. “A classic black or tan leather boot will always look good and is one of the most versatile items in your wardrobe,” says House of Bruar’s creative

director, Tom Birkbeck. “You can pair them with anything from casual trousers to feminine dresses with tights and thick socks – just make sure your boot has a strong grip on the bottom to avoid any accidents!” Laudort recommends opting for neutral tones when it comes to practical footwear, “neutral tones and simple designs are best for investment pieces, leaving bold patterns and unusual silhouettes for trend-driven choices.”

MIX TEXTURES

The easiest way to look chic whilst being bundled up is to mix and match textures whilst keeping the same colour tone. Natural materials such as leather and wool provide breathability whilst adding a touch of sophistication. Faux fur trims are an easy way to elevate an otherwise simple coat or outfit. “Start with a neutral base by pairing leather leggings or trousers with a simple wool turtleneck,” suggests Laudort. “Then layer by adding either a faux-fur gilet or scarf for a luxurious touch.” Laudort emphasises the importance of proportions, “There should also be balanced proportions, so try to mix heavy textures with lighter ones – for example, a sleek leather midi-skirt with a chunky-knit sweater.”

TOP IT OFF

The non-negotiables lie in the accessories. “Chunky scarves and gloves in luxe fabrics like cashmere or merino wool add warmth and

elegance to your winter look,” says Laudort. The leading accessories trend for 2024 seems to be a combination of the hat and scarf, coming in the form of a balaclava. Opting for a bold colour or pattern is a great way to inject personality into your outfit. Accessories tend to be the most affordable pieces of a winter ensemble, meaning they’re easy to swap in for trend-led items. But if you’re looking to invest, Birkbeck suggests focusing on the material more so than the style. “Synthetic fabrics such as polyester and nylon are not as hardwearing as natural fabrics, so looking for items with a high wool count, for example, will ensure you have winter pieces that are built to last and can be worn year after year.”

SKIN CANCER AWARENESS: What to Look for and How Early Detection Can Save Lives

At Oxona Healthcare, we frequently encounter patients who are understandably concerned about moles but may be overlooking smaller lesions or blemishes that are just as important to monitor. As we age, it’s natural to develop benign lumps and bumps, but early-stage skin cancers often present in ways that can be mistaken for harmless skin imperfections. With regular selfchecks and professional advice, you can greatly improve your chances of spotting any potential issues early.

Here’s a brief guide to help you identify the most common types of skin cancers and understand when it’s time to seek professional advice.

THE THREE KEY TYPES OF SKIN CANCER

While there are many forms of skin cancer, the three most common are melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Each type can be identified when the lesion reaches a few millimetres in diameter, but it’s the subtle signs that can often go unnoticed at first.

Melanoma: The Most Dangerous, But Less Common

Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, known for its ability to spread quickly beneath the skin and into the lymph nodes. While melanoma only accounts for around 3% of all skin cancers, it is crucial to catch it early. Melanomas typically appear as new or changing moles. Key warning signs include:

• Asymmetry: One half of the mole is different from the other

• Irregular borders: Edges that are jagged or blurred

• Multiple colours: Shades of brown, black, or even red, white, or blue

• Growing size: Moles that increase in size or change shape

If you notice any of these changes, it’s essential to consult a dermatologist. In children and teenagers, new moles can be normal as they go

through growth stages, but melanoma in this age group is rare. However, young adults—particularly those who have used sunbeds or spent a lot of time in the sun—are at higher risk. By the age of 50, your skin will have developed its full set of moles. Any new mole appearing after this age should be carefully evaluated.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): Often Missed, Yet Important to Spot Early SCC is more common than melanoma but less so than BCC. This type of skin cancer tends to affect older individuals and, though less aggressive than melanoma, it can metastasize (spread to other parts of the body) if left untreated. SCC often appears as a small, scaly spot or a crusty scab that refuses to heal. Over time, the lesion may grow larger, often on sun-exposed areas like the face, ears, or hands. The key signs to look for include:

• A persistent scab or ulcer that doesn’t heal

“Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, known for its ability to spread quickly “

• A rough or scaly patch of skin

• Growth over weeks or months

If you notice any such changes, especially if they appear in areas exposed to the sun, a prompt consultation is important.

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): Slow-Growing but Common

BCC is the most prevalent type of skin cancer and, fortunately, it rarely metastasizes. It typically presents as a small, shiny nodule that grows slowly over time. However, it can also appear as a flat, scaly patch or a scar-like area. While BCCs are often seen in older adults and those with prolonged sun exposure, they can also occur in those with fair skin who have had intermittent sunburns or who spend a lot of time outdoors.

Typical characteristics of BCC include:

• A pearly or waxy appearance

• A persistent, non-healing sore or ulcer

• A slow-growing area that may bleed or crust over time

Although BCCs are less dangerous than melanomas or SCCs, early treatment can help prevent complications and ensure a better cosmetic outcome.

Early Detection and Why It Matters

While the signs of skin cancer are often visible, they can be subtle and easy to overlook, especially when they resemble benign skin conditions. Regular self-exams and professional checks are essential for early identification. At Oxona Healthcare, we offer expert dermatological services, including a single lesion check (£110) or a comprehensive full-body mole and lesion check (£235). Our team of specialists uses advanced dermoscopy, a technique that allows us to examine

the skin in high detail to spot even the most subtle signs of skin cancer.

If we detect anything concerning, we’ll discuss your options with you, which may include immediate removal at one of our clinics, referral to a specialist such as a plastic surgeon, or a direct referral into the NHS, bypassing the need for a GP visit.

Don’t Wait—Act Early

Skin cancers, while common, are highly treatable when detected early. By familiarising yourself with the signs and seeking professional advice at the first sign of a change, you can significantly improve your chances of successful treatment. At Oxona Healthcare, we pride ourselves on offering accessible, expert care right here in St Albans. Let us help you stay proactive about your skin health. oxonahealth.co.uk

2024 Interiors round-up

If 2024 stood for one thing, it was actually two things: utterly mouth-watering, jawdropping quality – not a stitch sewn out of place, pieces crafted from materials that are and the peak of top quality – and the confident ability to place items in our home knowing we’ll love them for a lifetime, but that not everyone will feel the sameThis year we’ve selected the finest, couldn’t-possibly-be-better representations of our style pieces that speaks to our souls – designs which are very much not-like-your- neighbours’ – a luxury that’s not just visually stunning, but profoundly personal.

In the final chapters of 2024, the essence of sincere, one-of-a-kind design hovers all around, setting the tone for a future defined by thoughtful curation and unageing grace. Here, we discuss the year’s standout pieces that narrate the aesthetics carrying us gracefully into the next era of interiors.

BEST IN LOUNGING - DS-888 Sofa, DeSede

A stand out piece from the year which exemplifies this refined, thoughtful, enduring-yet- creative mood, is the Collina sofa by de Sede Design-Team and Atelier Oï. Both proudly function-focused

and a bold sculptural statement, the sofa is designed to fit into lively and dynamic homes, its innovative back rest segments able to move in all directions thanks to a newly developed patented design, meaning one moment you could be sitting facing the television, the next out of the window, the next ready for an intimate talk. Take it upholstered in Nougat, Sand, Teak or Whisky if the last 12 months has revealed your love of neutrals, or in a brighter RAL colour if it’s unleashed your wild side.

BEST IN DINING - Napoleon Keramik,

Innovative technology meets one of our oldest yet most enduring materials in the Napoleon Keramik table. At the height of cutting-edge ceramic technology, it’s made with a previously unseen advanced modelling technique which makes design more flexible than ever. The material then seamlessly takes on the appearance of natural marble, in a selection of different finishes – such as the matt Invisible ceramic which is akin to a classic white marble with grey veins, the black with gold-veined Marmi matt Portoro ceramic and the soothing, gently swirling grey Colosseo, all in a range of interchangeable tabletop shapes (from oval and various rectangles to the asymmetric Polygon)

BEST IN SLEEPING - ARCHIBALD BED,

Frau

Nothing says I-walk-to-my-own-tune than a statement, directional, curiosity-piquing piece. The Archibald Bed doesn’t really feel like a bed. The characterful headboard folding around like the edges of paper or a gently curling leaf, it’s further enhanced by soft drapery that runs across its luxurious leather upholstery. Simultaneously familiar, safe, and inviting, it effortlessly combines design-led sophistication with chic elegance.

BEST IN LIGHTING - DOME LIGHT,

There’s something enchanting about the organic, free flowing nature of glass – so when it’s shaped into linear or geometric forms, our brains spark and stir. The Dome Light nods to classical Roman architecture and the sweeping curves of Venice in smooth or rippled glass, its angles precise and perfect as if ready to be built into a dreamlike glowing cityscape. This rigid structure is softened

by the piece’s function – the light it emits is gentle and cast down through a diffuser, transforming the strict measurements into something more bewitching and transfixing.

BEST IN ACCESSORIES - LINES RUG, GAN

In a year zooming in on quality that’s the best of the best, a tribute to merino wool is satisfyingly fitting. Mayice Studio’s Lines collection for GAN is a sensory experience, inspired by the importance of touch and the thrill in the authenticity of the natural. The long-pile rugs come in the undyed woollen tones of White, Brown, Grey, Charcoal, and are a fusion of a direct connection to nature and a heavy dose of a minimal, contemporary style – however did our floors and feet and feelings cope without it? chaplins.co.uk

Rustic

Charm

The new bathroom with age-old appeal

Interior designer and founder of The Baked Tile Company, Lesley Taylor, proves homeowners can enjoy all the charm of a vintage interior scheme with none of the hassle in a new bathroom makeover.

Using tiles from her own collection, Lesley has created a bathroom that pays homage to the property’s rustic past, while injecting a touch of 21st century styling.

Lesley said: “This bathroom is in quite a traditional house with lots of beams and vintage detailing, which is something the homeowner wanted to build on.

“We wanted to use product which would look like it’s always been there, but we needed to consider the practical elements too.”

Lesley delved into The Baked Tile range to pull together a mood board featuring three very distinctive tiles.

The floor uses Marrakesh Terracotta Brick in two different finishes, while Designer Basic in Boux was used on three walls to complement the distinctive Tuscany Flower Décor which takes centre stage.

Lesley explained: “We wanted to create a spacious bathroom that wasn’t interrupted by a separate shower cubicle. So we created a wet room complete with tiled shower tray to give the feel of a more expansive bathroom.

“We laid Marrakesh Terracotta Brick in both

light and dark variants in a classic herringbone style to add rustic charm. And unlike real terracotta, there is no need to seal the tiles which means minimal maintenance is required to keep them looking stunning.”

To create a showpiece behind the bath and shower enclosure, Lesley used Tuscany Flower Décor – a stunning tile that looks handcrafted.

Lesley said: “Tuscany Flower Décor is incredibly shiny with a gorgeous undulating surface. It looks like a real artisan tile, but it can stand up to everything a modern bathroom can throw at it.”

To complete the look, Designer Basic in Boux – a luxurious off-white shade – was used on the remaining walls.

Lesley said: “The Designer Basic range has been designed to complement a wealth of patterned tiles and ensure homeowners can keep their renovations to a tight budget.”

Bathroom Trends 2025

Roper Rhodes reveals the top four trends set to dominate bathrooms in 2025

The days of cold, clinical bathrooms are over, according to the experts at bathroom specialists Roper Rhodes.

As we head into a new year, homeowners investing in a bathroom renovation are looking to embrace colourful schemes that pay homage to the past while embracing new technologies.

Zoe Jones, Senior Creative Producer at Roper Rhodes, said: “When it comes to bathroom renovations, in 2025 the focus will be on making design decisions that reflect individual styles and personal histories while creating timeless and comfortable spaces.”

Here Zoe shares her top four bathroom trends for the new year:

NEWSTALGIA

Set against a backdrop of modern technology, the trend for new nostalgia hones in on curated spaces that are warm and familiar, yet in keeping with contemporary context.

The result is a fresh approach to the colours, materials and designs that many grew up withfrom the resurgence of travertine tiles, terracotta colour palettes and shower curtains to the remaking of the tried and tested blue bathroom.

Zoe said: “Newstalgia is a common thread weaving through all our trend predictions for 2025.

“More than ever, people are seeking warm, inviting interiors that feel both familiar and full of life and colour. There’s a collective fatigue with ‘Instagrammable spaces,’ and this sentiment is influencing bathroom design, too.

“Whether you lean towards minimalism or maximalism, the focus is on personal expression — selecting materials, finishes, and fixtures that resonate and create an atmosphere you genuinely enjoy.”

• Get the Look: Newstalgia Combine traditional materials such as wood, zellige tiles, aged brass and natural marble to soften the conventional blue bathroom that was so popular in decades past. Roper Rhodes’ traditional Burford vanity is given a twist with a countertop basin and a wall-mounted style, while the walk-in shower layout keeps the look fresh and up to date. Full of colour yet subtly balanced, the result is warm and inviting.

FLIGHTS OF WHIMSY

Deviating ever-so-slightly from Newstalgia is the passion for all things whimsical. The 2024 micro trend for characterful, mood-boosting bathrooms will blossom and take shape in 2025, with designers and homeowners alike embracing whimsical, retro shapes such as scallops, waves, and pinstripes and employing warming, joyful colours in their bathroom spaces.

eccentricity, the trend for whimsical bathrooms looks a little like the dopamine decor bathroom of before, but with one key difference- it’s informed by the past. Whether it’s a Liberty print wallpaper, a scalloped edge or a candy-stripe tile, this bathroom trend blends the most vivid and fanciful elements from times past and creates something fresh and new.”

WORKS OF ART

The growth of AI will bring a very human-centric response in interior design in 2025. The revival of Art Deco, Art Nouveau and the Arts & Crafts Movement is not just a celebration of design heritage but also reasserts the importance of human touch and craftsmanship in an increasingly automated world. While distinct in their own respects, each style emphasises the integration of artistic expression into everyday life and objects.

Zoe said: “From the arched shapes and decorative detailing of Art Deco, to the organic lines of Art Nouveau and the Arts & Crafts movements, we will see this trend move slowly but surely into bathrooms through pattern, texture and colours - particularly through the use of brass, deep greens, nature-inspired wallpaper and opulent tile work.”

A decorative arch is a great way to introduce this trend into your bathroom. Combine with warm, rich colours, wood furniture and lustrous artisan tile work.

return in 2025, bringing a sense of elegance and sophistication to modern homes and bathrooms. Defined by their timeless appeal, these designs draw from the neoclassical influences of the early 19th century, characterised by symmetry, refined detailing, and luxurious finishes. In bathrooms, this trend is expressed through features like freestanding clawfoot bathtubs, ornate mirrors, and soft, muted colour palettes accentuated by gilded touches and marble surfaces. The rise of this style reflects a broader cultural desire for refined, tranquil spaces that balance opulence with comfort, blending historical charm with contemporary functionality.

Zoe said: “The traditional bathroom will never truly go out of fashion, but where in the past we have seen a mix of old and new, this year we believe it’s back to basics. Chrome and nickel brassware, soft muted colours and decorative woodwork & mouldings are the hallmarks of the Regency bathroom, and we’re wholeheartedly here for it!”

• Get the Look: Past Times

For this bathroom, we went with the tried and tested formula of warm subtle colours, aged tiles and traditional cabinetry. Naturally, the freestanding bath with chrome detailing is the focal point, while a traditional illuminated mirror keeps the design in line with the demand of the busy modern bathroom.

Coast to Home

Habulous showcase Shoreline – a ceramic collection inspired by the raw beauty of the British coast

Aceramic collection inspired by the British coast has been designed to spark joy in homes the length and breadth of Britain.

Shoreline from Habulous is a homeware collection channelling the spirit of the coast.

Each piece in the seven-strong collection is handcrafted in Habulous’ Dartmoor studio and boasts a striking turquoise and pink colourwayreminiscent of the sun setting over the ocean.

Nicky Edmunds, Founder of Habulous and the creator of Shoreline, said: “At Habulous, we craft our ceramics in line with our planet-friendly values and this collection was inspired by the raw beauty of our coastline and surrounding waters.

“But this collection doesn’t just look good. Every piece has a practical purpose and can be used in the home every day, from soap dishes that bring the essence of the sea to the bathroom to plant holders which help bring a touch of biophilia into the home.”

The collection is made up of decorative pieces, including vases, candle holders and plant pots as well as a beautiful oil pourer. And because each piece is hand-thrown, each one will have slight variations making it completely unique.

Nicky said: “The turquoise resembles the colour of the sea on a summer’s day, and the pink is especially unique with its speckled gradient.

“The natural clay, visible between the two glazes, bakes to a warm, sandy colour. We can only think of those happy moments, feeling the sand beneath our feet and paddling along the lapping shore, when looking at this beautiful collection.”

The Shoreline Collection is available now from Habulous, with prices from £11. habulous.co.uk

MOCHA MOUSSE: Get the look with tiles

It’s finally here, Pantone have announced their colour of the year and we couldn’t love it more.

We sat down with our head of creative, Grazzie Wilson to ask her how to get the look with tiles. “It’s no surprise to see that the Pantone Colour of the Year is Mocha Mousse. Brown in all its different shades became a staple colour in home interiors projects this year and it will be no different in 2025.

There’s something super cosy and cocooning about the colour Mocha Mousse, a dialled down, softly does it take on brown. It’s perfect for people wanting to enhance kitchens or bathrooms with a touch of warmth.

When it comes to tiles, either jump straight into the trend or look at patterned tiles that include a touch of this shade.

We adore the shade for its earthiness, its warmth and how it can do both depth and drama as much as it creates a low-key and soft neutral mood” capietra.com

Notes from Nonna’s Kitchen

Don’t we all sort of wish we had a Nonna?

That ridiculously charming vision of an Italian granny, scooping handmade orecchiette pasta at the cucina table with her lace pinny on. Good news: this latest tile collection from the Studio at Ca’ Pietra is giving Nonna, big time. We might not be able to deliver you a Grazia (the name of our very own Head of Creative’s, Grazzie’s Nonna), but this is the next best thing, whisking you off to the cypress tree-studded Italian countryside, one tile at a time.

THE NONNA’S KITCHEN COLLECTION: MEET THE TILES

Ten tiles. All destined for your walls. Each one as charming as the other. That’s Nonna’s Kitchen for you in a nutshell. First up, we’ve got the florals.

The Classica tiles are all hand painted in the UK in aquintessentially provincial Italian palette – blue and white. There are three floral designs and one left largely plain (save for the delicate foliage corners) that can be combined on one wall

inwhatever way you please. Though, all white with then a gathering of florals in the centre like a piece of art is a characterful way to go about things in a rustic country kitchen – wooden pot hanger and all. Sorrento is far jazzier and takes you to Nonna’s lemon grove. Pick between a buttermilk backdrop or a blue sky day, and if you really want to go big on the rustic Italian kitchen feel, go for a whole wall in them – in a pantry with vintage pine shelving in front looks so great.

Nuvola has more of a playful feel to it with the two pastel colourways to pick between, each with a cloud effect and two colours of falling fruit. It’s a dreamy way of depicting sunset and sunrise skies and abundant Italian harvests all year round. Imagine those behind your stove.

And finally, Cornelia and Floreale that take a pure white glazed tile with decorative foliage and gentle colour. A whole kitchen in these with coloured cabinetry or exposed timber will bring you your very own la dolce vita.

THE TALE BEHIND THE TILES

For one of our first collections to come out of Studio, we wanted to create a collection that transported you to someplace else – somewhere nostalgic, somewhere comforting, some place that breathes good food into the heart of your home before you’ve even got out the chopping board.

Who better to do just that than the Italian Nonna you never had – or maybe you’re the lucky

“For one of our first collections to come out of Studio, we wanted to create a collection that transported you to someplace else”

sort who did and perhaps still do. It’s no secret that the Italian home kitchen is a special place. In recent years there’s been much written and brought to our television screens via various cooking shows featuring the wisdom and wonder of Italian pasta grannies, hand-making every shape and every sauce you could imagine. The kitchens we see them in are full of stories, tiles that are decorative but not fussy and that sit back against the farmhouse kitchen table and antique cabinetry that have been in the multi-generational family home for decades. It’s that very scene that we had in mind when designing the collection. You might not have olive branches extending outside your window, but the soul of the Italian kitchen can still be brought into homes far and wide. From country cottages to period townhouses in the city, these are tiles that will live their days richly, encouraging you to bring in fresh cut flowers and fruit from the market in their crumpled brown paper bags, to always keep the fridge full for whoever descends, to cook fine fare with family and friends and to live the good life in the heart of your home. “There’s an old Italian saying A tavola non s’invecchia that translates as: at the table, one does not grow old,” says our head of creative, Grazzie. “The notion of spending hours over proper food and that never ever being wasted is something we really had in mind when designing these tiles. But they don’t have to stay in the kitchen, remember: they translate to all parts of the home – imagine Nonna’s Classica around the fire, a shower enclosure tiled in Sorrento or Nuvola or a bathroom wall in pretty Cornelia. Winter Whites

A Fresh Start for 2025: Winter White Homewares

It might be renowned for its dazzling blue homewares, but interiors brand XV Stripes is putting its crisp white homewares into the spotlight as we enter a new year.

The coastal-inspired brand has curated a collection of cool winter whites to bring a fresh new look for 2025.

Izzey Hung, Founder of XV Stripes, said: “After the frivolity of the festive period, it’s a wonderful time of year to relax, unwind and prepare for the year ahead. This homeware edit has been pulled together from some of our favourite collections and designed to bring a clean, fuss-free feel while still hitting all the right notes stylistically.”

Comprising of prints and soft furnishings, the collection has been designed so homeowners can mix and match with their established décor.

The prints can be slotted into existing frames, while the Compass Blanket and Cushion can be used to add depth and dimensions to sofas and chairs.

Izzy added: “The beauty of this collection is there is no need to undertake a complete renovation, just some small tweaks here and there will give your home a new look and a fresh feel to kickstart the new year.”

XV Stripes was founded by Izzy in a bid to bring a touch of luxury and sustainability alongside

the essence of coastal living to the world of interiors.

The collection spans bedding, tableware and gifts, as well as an extensive wallpaper range that was launched in 2024.

NEW YEAR, NEW HOUSEPLANTS

Taking down decorations after the festive season can make our homes feel a bit bare, so January is the perfect time to welcome life and vibrancy back into your space with houseplants.

Whether you’re looking to fill the space your Christmas tree left, spruce up some empty shelves, or add a pop of greenery to a neutral bathroom, Dobbies’ new houseplant range for 2025 offers a varied selection for all areas of the home.

Dobbies’ Senior Plant Buyer, Claire Bishop chats through what houseplants people can find at the garden centre in the new year, and the benefits of bringing greenery indoors.

BOTANICAL BATHROOMS

Claire says that houseplants can transform your bathroom into a serene, spa-like retreat, and notes that this is a great environment for some plant varieties to thrive. Ferns and other green plants are a good choice for bathrooms as they do well with humidity, and Succulents are also great for this room thanks to their compact nature.

When choosing plants for your bathroom, Claire says you should consider the light levels and temperature. Low-light plants like the air purifying Calathea (prayer plant) do well in bathrooms thanks to their ability to survive with little natural light, and will enhance your space with its visually striking foliage. Tillandsia, also known as Spanish Moss, is also a fantastic plant for bathrooms and can be styled hanging down from shelves with Ivy for a tropical vibe.

KITCHEN GREENERY

If you’re looking to brighten up your kitchen and give it a fresh look and feel for the new year, Claire says there are plenty of houseplants that do well in this space. Fill empty shelves and corners with the air purifying Spathiphyllum, or Peace Lily. These elegant plants are proven to remove toxins from the air so can make your kitchen feel brighter and

fresher, and they’re easy to look after, requiring little to no maintenance on a day-to-day basis. Other houseplants that will elevate a kitchen environment include the Monstera, or Cheese plant. Ideal for making an impact, the dramatic Monstera with its glossy leaves is also an air purifier. Claire suggests pairing it with the Dypsis, or Parlour palm, as the different layers of textures and height will create an interesting effect.

UPLIFTING LIVING SPACES

Houseplants are a wonderful way to welcome joy into living spaces and can help dark rooms appear brighter with their vibrant leaves. For a full effect, Claire recommends grouping different sizes of plants together. Larger palms can be styled with small Chlorophytum comosums, or Spider plants, and trailing plants in baskets for a jungle feel. Claire notes that larger climbing plants can be supported with moss poles to encourage growth and stability. Position these plants in a bright spot near a window but out of direct sunlight and water when the top layer of soil feels dry to the touch.

The new houseplant collections launch in Dobbies stores across the UK and online from January 2025: dobbies.com.

Making a Great First Impression

Choosing door furniture for your Entrance Door can be quite daunting, particularly as it creates that all important, great first impression.

A good starting place is to consider the size and design of your door and the space available to position the hardware. Then it is all about balance, proportion and of course functionality.

“Helping people to furnish their front door is something I really enjoy. Working with the owner to create a look that marries the fabric of the property with their personality and style is really key and delivers beautiful results” Jayne says.

Richard continues “The finish is also a key consideration, not just for how it looks aesthetically, but also for longevity. If your property is near the coast then choosing a finish that will stand up to the harsher environment is critical to the door furniture looking good years down the line.”

Introducing Spring Freshness to your Interiors

Spring brings with it renewed energy and optimism, ideal for getting started on long-awaited decorating projects. Whether its a whole room or a few simple updates, Adam Browne, MD of The Painted Furniture Company is on hand with plenty of great ideas.

“Pastel colours are ideal for interiors and create a cheerful feeling of Spring renewal. From soft green to gentle yellow, they tone well with many other colours in the home and are a great way to refresh a tired room. Grey has been a popular choice for decorating for a few years now and both pastel blue and pale pink work great with these schemes, adding a fresh new twist,” comments Adam.

He continues, “Selecting furniture in these colours may seem like a bold statement however, the results can be stunning and a simple dresser painted in Meadow or Little Boy Blue for example, looks beautiful when set off against a crisp white wall. If preferred, the colour could be toned down with the addition of a wooden top for a homely feel.”

“I think it’s important to have fun with your interiors and adding a pop of pastel pink in

something small like a coffee table, or bedside tables can be just enough to make you smile as you enter the room. Try experimenting with cushions or bedding with touches of the same shade to complete the look,” advises Adam.

The 60-30-10 Design Rule

“The 60-30-10 design rule is such a simple yet effective way to create balance and cohesion in a room. It works by breaking the colour palette into 60% for the dominant colour, 30% for a secondary colour and 10% for an accent. I find this approach helps to build layers of interest and create a warm, inviting feel.”

“For me, this rule isn’t about bold contrasts but about creating harmony. I tend to lean towards

soft, natural tones for the 60%, like warm neutrals or earthy shades, which provide a calm and grounding base. The 30% might be introduced through natural materials, such as wood, stone or linen, which add texture and depth. For the final 10%, I love bringing in handcrafted details, whether that’s a piece of artisan pottery, a vintage find or soft furnishings in complementary tones.”

“What I love most about the 60-30-10 rule is its versatility. It gives you a framework to build from while allowing room for creativity and individuality. It’s less about sticking to strict percentages and more about finding a balance that feels right for the space and the people who live there.” clairegarner.com
