TRIPTYCH BANKSIDE BRINGS TOGETHER THE BEST OF ART, CULTURE AND HOMES

Triptych Bankside the award-winning scheme by JTRE

London nestled in London’s cultural core on the South Bank, consists of three distinctive sweeping towers designed by internationally acclaimed architects Squire & Partners. Featuring 169 luxury apartments and an eclectic mix of retail at ground level, the development has become known as an ‘area defining scheme’.

The next chapter of Triptych Bankside’s story has begun with the welcoming of Art Academy London’s new campus. The new campus, adjacent to Tate Modern, will open its doors to new and existing students as well as the wider local community. Set over two floors, the 15,000 sq ft. campus includes teaching facilities including

nine studios, an auditorium and specialist workshop spaces. It also has an onsite art supplies shop, as well as a 2,000 sq ft gallery which is open to the public.

With less than 20% of apartments still available at Triptych Bankside, potential homeowners will be happy to know that research from Creative Land Trust recently revealed that there has been a 44% price outperformance of homes within London’s key creative clusters over the last 10 years compared to those outside. This outperformance finds strong evidence for a link between the clusters of creative workspace and residential demand across areas in London. The research highlights clear financial value to the benefit creative industries bring to areas, expressed in house price data.

Over a 10-year time frame, this amounts to 4.4% per annum price outperformance above the wider London residential market.

Nigel Fleming, Managing Director at JTRE London, comments: “Our flagship development Triptych Bankside has flourished, attracting a diverse range of residents, all attracted by the combination of exceptional architecture, development quality, specification and location.”

The opening of Art Academy at Triptych Bankside is a huge landmark not just for JTRE London but the local area, London’s arts sector and residents alike, with the entire community benefitting from our commitment to shaping the spaces that we operate in for better.”

Situated at the heart of the South Bank, Triptych Bankside neighbours landmark buildings Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe. Shopping and eating locally has never been more convenient with nearby Borough Market offering high quality and sustainably produced food of every variety, not to mention the countless restaurants and cafes in the local vicinity.

The superb connectivity of the South Bank makes it very appealing with key train stations Waterloo, Blackfriars and London Bridge all within easy walking distance from the development. For those wanting to walk to work, the nearby Millennium Bridge offers a scenic walking route into the City, whilst for those with flexible

working needs, Triptych Bankside offers excellent co-working space with multiple plug-and-play workstations and super-fast broadband.

The SE1 area represents a prudent investment opportunity for the future, with leading estate agency Savills giving a 17.4% 5-year price growth forecast from 2024-2028 and 7.2% rental growth forecast over the same period for the Bankside area. These prospects are being boosted by the arrival of exciting major new projects including Bankside Yards, Mandarin Oriental, 18 Blackfriars Road and the new LSE Bankside House, further cementing the area’s credentials as a vibrant destination where you can live, work and play in balance.

With experience and wellbeing coming first, the scheme features multiple private lounges, games room, private 14-seat in-house cinema, 24-hour reception and concierge, and communal landscaped gardens. There is a state-of-the-art gym run by The Font with Olympic-standard climbing walls and an area to eat, relax and socialise. Or if you simply want to enjoy the perfect cappuccino, Mediterranean deli Uncommon, has also opened recently on site.

Homes are ready to move into, with two-bedroom apartments starting from £1,735,000 and three-bedroom apartments starting from £2,745,000. If you want to find out more, please visit triptychbankside.com or call +44 (0)20 7620 3424.

the area in 1689 when William III moved into Kensington Palace. The King’s Road takes its name from the 17th century when it was King Charles II’s private thoroughfare between Whitehall and Hampton Court Palace. It remained a private royal road until 1830. Thanks to its uniquely picturesque character, Chelsea became the centre of the capital’s artistic life. Its reputation as a creative hub grew when the King’s Road became the epicentre of London’s swinging 60s; and today Chelsea is one of London’s most stylish and characterful neighbourhoods, blending culture with fashion, food, art and design.

SCULPTURE IN THE CITY

Sculpture in the City, the annual public art exhibition set amidst the iconic architecture of the City of London, comprises 17 artworks, including ten new sculptures, as well as five works retained from previous editions, and two permanent acquisitions.

Featuring an eclectic mix of sculptures from established and emerging artists, the 13th edition continues the tradition of transforming the City’s public spaces into a vibrant open-air gallery.

This year’s new sculptures include the interactive work Kissing Gate by Maya Rose Edwards, situated in Aldgate Square, which playfully brings a rural kissing gate into the urban landscape, prompting romantic encounters between passers-by. At Mitre Square, CAUCUS by Samuel Ross invites public engagement with the sculpture, prompting familiar gestures like sitting, standing, and leaning.

Four new works unveiled in September by Julian Opie, Charles, Jiwon, Nethaneel, and Elena, at 100 Bishopsgate, capture a diverse group of faces through strict vertical symmetry, combining elements of traditional portraiture, modern face recognition, and public monuments.

At The Leadenhall Building, Hilary Jack’s Deluge invites reflection on the climate crisis with two LED text strips resembling a scrolling newsreel, one of them displaying contemporary

to architectural

by

both the mundane of everyday commerce and the sacredness of a shrine from its location on the corner of 99 Bishopsgate and Wormwood Street.

Permanent acquisitions include Oliver Bragg’s work, In Loving Memory, featuring engraved brass plaques situated on existing benches around the City of London commemorating fictional or abstract ideas with a mix of optimism, humour, and reflection. On show in a pedestrianised space outside 70 St Mary Axe, Elisa Artesero’s The Garden of Floating Words is a neon poem that appears to be floating in the darkness from within the foliage of a garden.

In addition to the artworks on display, Sculpture in the City offers a free activation programme throughout the summer to March 2025, with a diverse range of events including Muamba Movement, Little Art Critics TV workshops for children, Art on the Skyline: Cocktail & Create workshops, exhibition tours, a BSL guided tour, talks and student takeovers.

KATHRYN TICKELL & THE DARKENING

“No one has evoked the landscape and traditions of Northumbria more affectingly than Kathryn Tickell.” – The Observer

Northumbrian roots musician

Kathryn Tickell and her band

The Darkening bring their dynamic and unique “Ancient Northumbrian Futurism” to Blackheath Halls this autumn.

Named after the old Northumbrian word for twilight, The Darkening is made up of four North-East England-based members: Kathryn Tickell (Northumbrian smallpipes, fiddle, vocals), Amy Thatcher (accordion, synth, clogs, vocals), Kieran Szifris (octave mandolin), Joe Truswell (drums, percussion, programming. Jobsharing on this tour are Josie Duncan from the Isle of Lewis (vocals, clarsach) and Stef Conner from Cambridge (vocals, lyres).

Based in the shadow of Hadrian’s Wall yet reaching out to the wider world, Kathryn Tickell & The Darkening pull together threads of music, landscape and people. Songs range from themes of freedom, nature and venturing out into the world after times of darkness, to a Roman inscription with links to Libya and Syria magnetically pulled into the 21st century by Amen-inspired breakbeats, ominous vocals and the wildest of piping…

Northumbrian traditions meet global influences. Dark, edgy soundscapes flare into euphoria with the razor-sharp precision of the pipes and accordion, bombastic effects-drenched octave-mandolin, haunting harmony vocals, skilfully programmed beats, evocative slow airs and wild, heart-pounding dance tunes. Clàrsach, bone-flute and traditional Galician percussion add potency to the compelling ambience.

“Kathryn Tickell and The Darkening hold Cropredy in the palm of their hand. They are bright and deliciously loud; they make the ground buzz beneath the feet…” AT THE BARRIER (Cropredy 2024).

About Kathryn Tickell

This year is the 40th anniversary of Kathryn’s first album, ‘On Kielderside’, released in 1984 when she was still at school. A new album marking this milestone is out later this year: ’Return to Kielderside’ is nearly ready!

Kathryn Tickell is the foremost exponent of the Northumbrian smallpipes; a composer, performer, educator and successful recording artist with many releases to her name, whose work is deeply rooted in the landscape and people of Northumbria. She has performed across the world, in concert venues, theatres and on television. From her first album, released at the age of 16, Kathryn has carried the voices of her family and her Northumbrian traditions in her pipe and fiddle playing. Long admired by musicians and collaborators such as Jacob Collier, Sting and The Penguin Café Orchestra, Kathryn works across many genres, creating material that is contemporary and exciting.

Kathryn has been awarded the OBE for services to folk music, and also the Queen’s Medal for Music for her outstanding contribution to British music, the first non-classical recipient of this award.

Kathryn has twice won the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Musician of the Year. In 2023 Faber Music published ‘Folk Tunes From the Women’, Kathryn’s collection of tunes by 100 contemporary female composers from Britain and Ireland. She is a regular presenter for BBC Radio 3’s popular roots music programme ‘Music Planet’.

Saatchi Gallery Presents THE LANDSCAPE, REIMAGINED

BEERS London returns to Saatchi Gallery with The Landscape, Reimagined, a group exhibition including eight internationally based emerging and mid-career artists who reinterpret the conventions of landscape painting as radical and contemporary.

Until 20 September 2024

The landscape is among the most traditional of subject matter. For British audiences, artists like Turner, Constable, and Gainsborough are synonymous with a history of landscape painting. But in recent years, the painted landscape has been reinvigorated with fresh styles that push the limits of this timeless tradition.

The eight artists here are interested in pushing the boundaries of landscape through technique, interpretation, or even utilizing representational modes that toy with digital and analogue modules. These contemporary landscape painters embrace both crude, abstract tendencies and forward-thinking new formats. Whether utilising digital image-mapping techniques (Quiñonez) or a wildly unconventional colour palette (Bader), these artists bring a topsy-turvy, and wholly unexpected approach to landscape painting. From the dreamlike textures of (British, Australia-based) Ross Taylor or the impasto, reductive technique of (Canadian, US-based) Caroline Larsen, these works resituate the landscape within a contemporary art context.

Park School Nursery Celebrates ‘OUTSTANDING’ Ofsted Rating

Park School Nursery staff celebrated recently after being graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in its first inspection since extending their age range to include children under 2. The nursery, which welcomes babies to children rising 5, is part of independent day school, Park School on Queens Park South Drive, Bournemouth.

Prior to this, the popular and successful nursery had been inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) who graded both Park School and its nursery ‘Excellent’ in all areas in 2023.

During their inspection, the inspectors were impressed by the nursery’s leadership team and staff, and praised them for being “highly skilled, enthusiastic and nurturing”. They noticed that babies were keen to begin their learning and that the staff promoted the children’s communication and language skills exceptionally well, and commented that, “[Staff] expertly model communication through verbal and sign language.”

In recent months the nursery has been steadily expanding the space available to children, with further projects that are due for completion during the autumn term. These include the addition of more space for babies aged six months to two years, along with an upgraded outdoor play area featuring new climbing equipment. At the Ofsted inspection the inspectors also observed that children’s “physical development is promoted exceedingly well both indoors and in the covered outside classroom and the two exceptionally well-resourced outside areas.” They went on to recognise that, “staff place

a high emphasis on the prime areas of learning, which enables babies to feel secure and make meaningful relationships with the staff and the other children.”

In addition to the many learning opportunities within the nursery, children at Park Nursery also benefit from spending time in the Park School environment. This helps to create a seamless transition to entry into the Reception year group when the time comes.

The school is holding an Open Morning on Thursday 10th October where families will be able to tour the site and speak with our friendly and knowledgeable teaching staff.

For more information about the Open Morning or to book a personal tour of Park School and Nursery, visit parkschool.co.uk/sandbankslife or email admissions@parkschool.co.uk.

PUTTING FAMILIES FIRST

“Simply the best school, every day.” (Parent)
“A warm, friendly school in a glorious setting, where pupils enjoy their learning, throw themselves into a plethora of activities and have fun.” (Good Schools Guide)

Set in 34 acres on the Dorset/Hampshire border, Ballard is a thriving, co-educational day school providing an awardwinning holistic education from Nursery to GCSE. With fantastic facilities and exceptional teachers committed to providing an inspirational education for their pupils, Ballard offers the perfect balance of academic success, proactive pastoral support, and outstanding co-curricular opportunities. Ballard encourages pupils to be the best they can be, whilst ensuring no child gets left behind. Their dynamic leadership has turned ‘excellent & outstanding’ (ISI) into exceptional, and with many exciting plans in place, there has never been a better time to join.

With their strong governance and financial planning, Ballard

has pledged to absorb any VAT costs until September 2025, before phasing it in gradually over the coming years. The school will aim not to pass on the full 20%, reducing the impact on future fees.

Amongst many highlights this year, Ballard has been shortlisted for Co-educational School of the Year for the fourth year having previously reached the finals for Sports (2023) and Performing Arts (2022). They are the current Languagenut Primary champion and the winner of awards covering sport, DT, Art, and Eco.

Ballard believes that all pupils can flourish when given the right tools and environment, nurturing well-rounded, happy individuals with a healthy outlook on life. Classes are large enough to facilitate lively, challenging lessons, yet small enough so that every pupil is known, allowing staff to help pupils successfully develop, both academically and pastorally.

Exceptional teachers allow Ballard to run a wide range of GCSEs with 17 options to choose from alongside the core English, Maths, and Science. Tailored clinics stretch and support GCSE pupils, with outstanding results. This year Ballard, yet again, bucked the national trend with a 95% pass rate across all pupils and all subjects, only 3% behind the most academically selective school locally. On average, each pupil achieved 0.79 of a grade higher (based on their baseline assessment) across every subject!

Academic successes alongside trips and over 150 weekly co-curricular activities, ensure Ballard offers a well-rounded, holistic education. Pupils make the most of their opportunities, with alumni that include four Paris Olympians, three Olympic medallists, world champions, successful authors, an international opera star and a pop band.

“I am proud that parents have entrusted us with the most important task – educating and nurturing their children. They must have decided that our ethos, sense of community and family and vibrant teaching was what they wanted for their children. They appreciate that the individual needs and enthusiasms of each child is at the heart of all that we do.

Ballard is a wonderful school whose inclusive ethos encourages every pupil to find their strengths, be it in the classroom, on the sports field, or on stage. As a family school, we delight in supporting our busy, happy children to become the best that they can be.

There is a world of opportunities at Ballard, but don’t just take the Good Schools Guide, ISI, or our parents’ and pupils’ words for it, come and see for yourself.”

Some of our most recent testimonials:

“What was deeply impressive was the kindness and confidence shown by all the pupils we spoke to and engaged with. They were quietly confident, very happy with their school and enjoying their learning and a wide range of activities. Shortly afterwards, we decided on Ballard School ahead of several others locally and we have never looked back. It was our choice to send our children to Ballard, but it is our children’s feedback that keeps them there, day after day. They love it and now we count them as two of the “Ballard Family”. Thank you for everything you do, every day, for our children. #greatschool #learninglifeskills #enjoyinglifetothefullest”

– Parent Y2 & Y4

“Our twins began their Ballard journey in Year 7. Ballard’s nurturing environment and supportive teachers have had a transformative impact on their development. Initially excelling academically and in sport, they have now gained the confidence to explore other areas of interest. One has discovered her passion for DT and drama, thriving in creative expression; the other has found his love for percussion, forming a band with his classmates and performing in the orchestra. Both have blossomed, finding their unique identities and interests. We are incredibly proud to be part of the Ballard family and grateful for the positive changes it has brought to our children’s lives.”

– Parent Y9

“The experiences I’ve gained at this school have truly shaped who I am as a person.”

– Pupil Y11

“There is only one word to describe Ballard and that is ‘extraordinary’!”

ST DUNSTAN’S COLLEGE

Celebrates ISI inspection as one of the first schools in the country to receive two ‘significant strengths’

St Dunstan’s College, south-east London, is delighted to announce the findings of its latest inspection from the Independent Schools Inspectorate, carried out in April 2024.

St Dunstan’s is believed to be the first school in the country to receive two significant strengths as part of its inspection. This is an outstanding achievement.

Speaking about the report, St Dunstan’s Head, Nick Hewlett, said: ‘I am absolutely thrilled to share our new inspection report with our community.

‘We are one of the first schools in the whole country to receive two significant strengths, and I am delighted they recognise both our broad, forward-thinking, renaissance education and how diversity is embedded and celebrated in everything we do at St Dunstan’s.

‘The report is testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment of the whole community and I pay tribute to staff, students and our families who make St Dunstan’s such a special and unique place to be. We are truly an independent school like no other, and I am proud of our place within Lewisham and the sector.’

The report praised the broad and varied curriculums on offer to students at St Dunstan’s, explaining: ‘Leaders have put in place an ambitious, timetabled curriculum which provides extensive

opportunities for pupils to acquire the broadest of learning experiences. Leaders have taken great care in the design of this multi-faceted programme which is included as part of the school day.

‘There are four separate strands; together these provide the full range of curriculum subjects, an extensive offering of broader learning experiences, a programme of teaching skills for the future and one that focuses on building pupils’ wellbeing and

self-awareness. The breadth and relevance of this curriculum and leaders’ decision that all pupils participate in these opportunities, is a significant strength.’

The second ‘significant strength’ applauded the school’s dedication to celebrating diversity within the school.

‘The school’s ethos supports leaders in creating a strong community where diversity is celebrated,’ the report found. ‘This works through many facets of school life: through the curriculum, through the varied groups in school, led by pupils which celebrate diversity, and through producing events such as the annual St Dunstan’s festival. All these promote respect and understanding among the pupils for everyone in their own school and in the wider local community. This is a significant strength of the school.’

St Dunstan’s approach to learning was commended in the report, adding it prepares pupils for the future.

‘The school’s wide-ranging and imaginative curriculum offers a broad learning experience for all its pupils, developing their breadth of knowledge and understanding well.’

It adds: ‘Pupils develop their skills, selfunderstanding and aspiration. This approach prepares pupils very well for their future lives.’

The inspection report comes at an exciting time for St Dunstan’s. This summer, the College celebrated its best A Level and GCSE results in its 136-year history. 88% of all A Level grades achieved were A*- B with an outstanding 61% being A - A* and 27% being A*.

Following the historic results, 97% of the cohort will be heading to their chosen destination, which includes 100% success for students holding an offer for Oxbridge, medicine, music conservatoires, art foundation or drama school. Meanwhile, Year 11 students also achieved record-

breaking results in their summer examinations. 90% of all GCSE grades were 9-6, equivalent to A*-B, with an exceptional 78% being 9-7, which is A*- A, and 53% 9-8, which is the former A*.

Speaking about the results, Nick Hewlett said: ‘These outcomes truly showcase the St Dunstan’s difference and demonstrate that it is perfectly possible to achieve exceptional academic results within the framework of a liberal, progressive and Renaissance curriculum –one that is bold, ambitious and champions individuality.’

Earlier this year, the College was named Most Progressive School in south-east England at the Private Education Awards and in 2022, was named Independent Senior School of the Year at the Tes Schools Awards, which are known as the Oscars of education.

The full report from the Independent Schools Inspectorate can be read on the school’s website. St Dunstan’s Open Day will take place on Saturday 21 September 2024, 9.00am – 3.00pm and Sixth Form Open Evening on Wednesday 2 October, 6.00pm – 8.00pm. stdunstans.org.uk

CELEBRATIONS FOR ROSEMEAD

Dulwich’s leading prep school marks year of success

Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery, Dulwich, south London, is celebrating after a triumphant year, which included a brilliant report from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) and a Good Schools Guide review, which commended the school as the ‘one to watch’.

“Speaking about the report, Head of Rosemead, Graeme McCafferty explained: ‘I am absolutely thrilled with our outstanding recent inspection report’”

The ISI inspection praised Rosemead’s ambitious approach to learning, pastoral care and the support of individual pupil progress, as a consequence of the positive influence brought to bear by the school’s values, vision and leadership.

‘A highly customised approach to every pupil’s academic progress is a significant strength of the school,’ the report explained. ‘A customised learning programme in mathematics, English and reasoning caters for pupils in Year 4 and above. This, supported by an extensive enrichment programme and much support for individuals, impacts on all groups of pupils, enabling them to make good and often rapid progress over time.’

Speaking about the report, Head of Rosemead, Graeme McCafferty explained: ‘I am absolutely thrilled with our outstanding recent inspection report’

‘One standout strength that truly shines through is our highly customised approach to every child’s academic progress. The report highlighted our dedication to tailoring personal learning programs for each child, particularly in Maths, English, VR, and NVR.’

Graeme added: ‘What’s more, our extensive learning support programme ensures that every individual in our school community not only succeeds but thrives. This recognition reaffirms our commitment to providing the best possible education for every child

at Rosemead, and I couldn’t be prouder of our school’s achievement.’

Rosemead’s early years’ provision was also praised in the summary findings.

‘Leaders in the early years effectively ensure staff have high expectations of the behaviour and achievement of children,’ the report found. ‘The positive relationships between adults and children in the early years help children settle in quickly and feel safe and happy.’

The report comes at an exciting time for Rosemead. Last year, the school announced a merger with St Dunstan’s College joining St Dunstan’s Education Group.

Rosemead is also celebrating after a visit from the Good Schools Guide which praised the school’s leadership and its future direction.

‘With a head and staff who are emotionally engaged with, and academically ambitious for, their pupils, there is no doubt that children here are happy and make excellent progress,’ the review explained. ‘They (pupils) are attentive, polite and delightfully entertaining.’

The review adds: ‘A parent told us, ‘At the age of four, it is impossible to know who your child will be or where his or her interests and strengths will lie at 11.’ Here, the school, parents and children go on that journey of discovery together, so that when the time comes the right choices are made.

‘We think Rosemead is definitely ‘one to watch’ as it carves out a specific niche in this corner of London.’

ST DUNSTAN’S COLLEGE CELEBRATES BEST RESULTS IN SCHOOL’S HISTORY

St Dunstan’s College is delighted to reveal Year 13 students have achieved the best A Level results in the school’s 136year history.

This year, 88% of all grades achieved were A*- B with an outstanding 61% being A - A* and 27% being A*. It is expected that these grades will position St Dunstan’s once again within the best performing schools in the country, based on academic outcomes.

Speaking about the record-breaking results, Head of St Dunstan’s, Nick Hewlett said: ‘The whole St Dunstan’s community is absolutely delighted for our Year 13 students. The outcomes mark the school’s best-ever A Level results on record, and for a second year in a row, outside of the Covid period, and speak to a school culture that has been turbo-charged in recent years, showcasing that it is perfectly possible to obtain outstanding academic results within the framework of a liberal, progressive and Renaissance curriculum.’

Head of Senior School, Jade McLellan, said: ‘The students have worked tremendously hard over the last two years, receiving relentless support from their A Level teachers and their families. We are so proud that their efforts have been rewarded with these historic outcomes. This year has also seen our highest number of Oxbridge and medicine places gained and five students are joining an elite course at a conservatoire, art foundation course or a drama school. More than two thirds of the students will be joining a Russell Group university and Times World Rankings Top 20 university.

‘The whole community wishes the students the very best as they begin the next chapter of their educational journeys, and we look forward to welcoming them back as Dunstonians in the future.’

Speaking about her results, Natasha, who will read Philosophy,

Politics and Economics at the University of Oxford, said: ‘I’m so pleased with my results today and feel extremely happy. I will miss the community spirit at St Dunstan’s and how the teachers and staff focus on every individual to help them succeed.’

Rio, Year 13’s outgoing Head of School, who will be reading Law at the University of Warwick, said: I’m so happy with my results, I’m really going to miss it here at St Dunstan’s. Even over the holidays I’ve missed seeing everyone each day.’

THE RISE AND FALL OF TED BAKER

The British fashion label closed all of its remaining stores last month. By Lara Owen

The high-street fashion brand, Ted Baker, recently announced that its remaining 31 stores in the UK would close, putting more than 500 jobs at risk.

Founded in Glasgow by Londonborn entrepreneur, Ray Kelvin, the brand started off as a men’s clothing label styled on Kelvin’s self-named alter ego, based on an “intrepid aviator, an all-round sportsman and the consort of princesses and Hollywood beauties.”

The brand shot to mainstream popularity almost immediately, but in 2019, cracks began to show. Combined with the atrocities of the pandemic, 2022 saw the beginning of the end for the label, and in March 2024, Ted Baker’s UK branches entered administration.

We take a look back at the rapid rise and fall of the once beloved British label: how it began and where it all went wrong.

THE RISE

Established in March of 1988, Ted Baker quickly achieved mainstream acclaim, becoming synonymous with the newly developed concept of ‘smart casual’. Its floral prints and quirky advertisements were a bold take on modernising classic British fashion. It prided itself on being a more exuberant option for young professionals.

The brand was an immediate hit and rapidly expanded, opening shops in Manchester, Nottingham and Covent Garden, London, by 1990.

With the popularity of their menswear, Ted Baker launched its women’s line in 1995, comprising of A-line dresses, floral skirts and bright tailored trousers. The brand kept its finger on the pulse, launching a website in 1998, which helped grow it’s consumer presence and brand recognition.

With its meteoric success, the brand saw no territory off limits. In 2014, Ted Baker launched luggage, home fragrance and audio, alongside its established jewellery collection which debuted in 2007.

The brand reached international acclaim and stores were soon popping up all over the world, including a much-coveted spot on Fifth Avenue, New York in August 2012.

By 2018, Ted Baker had 500 stores and concessions worldwide across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Australia and the US.

WHEN THINGS STARTED TO GO WRONG

In December of 2018, allegations against Ted Baker’s founder and CEO emerged from past employees accusing Kelvin of ‘forced hugging’. This led to a domino effect. In 2019, the company announced Kelvin’s resignation, whilst simultaneously issuing a profit warning after writing off £5m of unsold clothing.

“A communications strategy would have been critical in 2019, when Ray Kelvin departed due to misconduct allegations,” says Roger Hutton, partner at national law firm, Clarion. “This triggered a flurry of changes within the leadership team.” These internal issues had a profound impact on the disparate way the brand was managed both creatively and commercially.

Critics in The Guardian attributed the company’s low figures to “high prices and out-of-step styling”, noting that the brand had been overtaken by new online competitors. Some believed the brand’s creative thinking had become stagnant, as Nick Drewe, retail expert and founder of Wethrift notes, “Failure to modernise designs in line with contemporary trends undoubtedly contributed to the undoing of the brand, leading to significant losses.”

THE END

After furloughing nearly 2,000 employees – around 75% of their workforce – during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ted Baker was severely on the rocks. By March 2024, the number of UK stores had fallen from 192 in 2018, to 86.

On August 18 this year, it was announced that the remaining UK stores would close. “While brands such as Ted Baker would have once been readily available in department stores like Debenhams,” says Hutton, “this revenue stream has decreased significantly, meaning the brand must rely on its own bricks and mortar stores and e-commerce channels.”

While there were several factors at play, cost inflation, the brand’s static style and a shift in consumer spending were major influences in Ted Baker’s decline.

“It has certainly been a challenging period for premium fashion brands in the UK, and the situation is not looking likely to improve anytime soon as brands struggle to compete with a reduction in consumer spending,” says Drewe. “Unfortunately, I doubt it will be too long before we see more retailers in the space experience the same fate as Ted Baker.”

A TOUCH OF GLASS

As we move further into 2024, glass remains a pivotal material in interior design, celebrated for its delicate nature and timeless appeal. Brands like Brokis, Gallotti & Radice, Fiam Italia, and Glas Italia are leading the charge, each offering distinct interpretations that range from minimalist to avant-garde. Whether through the sculptural forms of dining tables, the low-lines of coffee tables, or the poetic luminosity of lighting, these brands are showcasing that glass as a material is the crystal clear-choice for contemporary living spaces. Glass is here to stay, and it is more innovative and elegant than ever. Enjoy this transparent list of the greatest in Glass and where to start building with one of natures most delicate materials.

DINING TABLES:

Gallotti & Radice perfects the art of large-scale minimalism with their dining tables utilising clean, sleek lines. The use of clear and smoked glass in the Platium table creates a sophisticated, almost ethereal appearance. The combination of glass with metal accents, particularly in gold or brass finishes, adds warm classic luxury to the otherwise modern designs. If you’re looking to go a step further and Fiam Italia’s Ragno dining table is a veritable masterpiece of glasswork. Almost as if it were carved from a singular block of marble and the table was found within.

COFFEE TABLES:

Glas Italia’s coffee tables are a celebration of playful geometry, featuring bold shapes and unexpected angles. This year, the focus is on transparency and colour contrast, with many designs incorporating clear and tinted glass in striking combinations. This

be seen in the new wooden version of their flagship “Muffins Lamp” a beautiful collaboration between two materials synonymous with luxury interiors.

is emphasised perfectly in the Shimmer coffee table. Alternatively, Fiam Italia continues to explore organic, flowing shapes in their coffee tables, which are often inspired by natural elements. The brand’s use of curved glass creates soft, uniquely stunning forms that add a sense of movement to living spaces. The Atlas coffee table is a prime example of this with a singular linear curve running through the surface that smoothens your space.

LIGHTING:

Brokis remains at the forefront of lighting design with their poetic, hand-blown glass lights that blend artisanal craftsmanship with the efficiency of modern technology. Their lighting collections focus on organic shapes and natural materials. There is a noticeable trend toward using opal glass, which diffuses light softly, creating a warm, inviting ambiance with pieces such as the Geomteric collection, that utilises beautiful shapes and unique patterns to match the inviting glow of the light itself. While they traditional work with glass, they recently have begun the integration of wood with their pieces to further display their ability mix the delicate and the durable, this can

If you would like to see one of the largest collections of Brokis in the UK then a quick visit to second floor of the Chaplins Furniture showroom in Northwest London would prove to be an enlightening experience. From the latest luminary solutions to stalwarts of the Brokis catalogue that provided them a platform to build their prestige in the glasswork world. London Rimadesio flagship store

Rimadesio, the leading Italian brand in design furniture, has chosen the city of London to inaugurate its first flagship store in the United Kingdom: a space of about 300 square meters conceived to engage architects, interior designers and international clients.

Located in a contemporary building at 83-85 Wigmore Street - in the heart of the West End - the new monobrand has been designed by Giuseppe Bavuso, who headed a complete renovation process and energy efficiency intervention over a 15-month period.

The space is developed on two levels connected by a LED-lightened overhanging staircase: the colour scheme of the rooms plays on the warm tones of walnut, bronzed metals and grey Vicenza stone, that covers the floor and all the perimeter walls. The project stands out for an accurate materials research and an architectural vision of the interiors.

On the outside, two large windows look out the street revealing the best of the Rimadesio offer, which includes iconic proposals and the latest novelties, such as the Modulor wall panelling system. The unique display concept aims at highlighting the quality, excellence and typological variety of the collection.

“The London opening represents a fundamental step in the consolidation strategy of our network” - Davide Malberti CEO comments. “It is the second flagship store managed directly by the company after the one opened in Milan”.

Gathering all the distinctive components of the brand, the space is designed to offer an accurate consultancy and project service in the residential, contract and hospitality field. It is also a workplace available to all Rimadesio dealers: a meeting point for events, training sessions and corporate awareness.

PAINT IT BLACK

Lick & M·A·C introduce limited-edition paint

In a world first, Lick and M·A·C have teamed up to create a limited-edition matt paint ‘M·A·C BLACK 40’ in a rich, jet black with only black undertones.

The collaboration highlights the versatility of black in both beauty and interiors, showcasing how M·A·C black 40 is the one colour that fits all.

Available only on Lick.com and in-store for a limited time only.

Lick and M·A·C have come together in a bold new collaboration to announce the launch of M·A·C Black 40 - a limited edition paint which celebrates black as the ultimate colour for self-expression.

For 40 years, M·A·C has empowered people to express themselves through makeup and colour, now they have joined forces with Lick to reframe an historically daunting colour in both beauty and interiors as inspiring and accessible. M·A·C Black 40 is a rich, matt jet black which is versatile and timeless - the one colour that fits all.

“M·A·C black 40 is the colour that everyone can have in their homes. It’s truly versatile: it adds dimension and contrast to any room, and will effortlessly accent your furniture and decor, whatever your style.” - Tash Bradley, Director of Interior Design and Colour Psychologist at Lick Black is widely regarded as the colour of rebelliousness and nonconformity, and is commonly associated with words such as ‘brave’, ‘bold’ and ‘daring’; this collaboration challenges this sentiment by highlighting four different ways to decorate with M·A·C Black 40:

to bring contrast and depth. The best way to do this is to use black to accentuate a feature, such as a staircase or fireplace, to draw your attention to the architectural highlights of your home.”

Tash Bradley, Director of Interior Design and Colour Psychologist at Lick said: “I’ve always been fascinated by the unique role black plays in our lives. In fashion, it represents elegance and sophistication, however, in the world of interiors, many view black as a colour that requires a level of bravery and boldness to decorate with. We are challenging that perception, showing that M·A·C Black 40 is the colour that everyone can have in their homes. This rich, matt hue absorbs all natural light, so if you’ve got a room that lacks sunlight, such as a bedroom or small space, lean into that by colour drenching your space to create a calming and cocooning effect.”

Colour drenching: “Colour drenching with black will help to create a very calm environment. If you have a small, north-facing room, this is a great option as black will absorb the shadows, blue the edges of the space and add heaps of personality.”

“M·A·C Black 40 - a limited edition paint which celebrates black as the ultimate colour for self-expression”

50/50 decorating: “This monochrome effect will help to trick the eye and open up your space, especially if you use black on the bottom 50% of the room and a light neutral on the top 50%. The key thing to remember is to ensure everything in that lower 50% should also be black, including radiators and skirting boards.”

Artistic pattern: “Black pairs with every other colour, so you can have a bit of fun with it. Pattern play helps to open up a room and vertical stripes will elongate your space. Whatever your style, black is a truly versatile colour with lots of potential for creativity.”

Accent colour: “Every room can benefit from an accent of black

Developed through Lick’s industry-leading formulation process, M·A·C Black 40 has unrivalled depth of colour and is made with the highestquality pigments. This limited edition hue is inspired by M·A·C’s iconic branding and the new M·A·Cximal Silky Matte Lipstick in the shade Caviar.

Dom Skinner, Director of Make-up Artistry at M·A·C said: “Celebrating M·A·C’s 40th year with Lick has been an honour, as black is at the heart of M·A·C’s DNA. What has been the most exciting part of this collaboration with Lick has been exploring the versatility of black. Showing how it can be harnessed in multiple ways from fierce rebellion to clean minimalist, from a simple sheer sweep to dynamic overdrawn intensity, black can go from cool to chic and proves why it’s a must for any trendsetter.”

Whether used as a dominant colour on your walls or as an accent colour on your woodwork, M·A·C Black 40 is the perfect choice for creating bold and timeless spaces. This elegant and empowering black pairs seamlessly with Lick White 02 for a high-contrast monochromatic look or Lick White 05 for a softer, neutral scheme. M·A·C Black 40 is the new go-to for interiors lovers and beauty enthusiasts alike to celebrate and elevate their style identity.

For minimalists and maximalists alike, M·A·C Black 40 is the one colour that fits all. lick.com/uk

DISCOVER XV STRIPES’ RANGE OF ECO-FRIENDLY BLANKETS AND THROWS

The days might be getting shorter and temperatures cooling, but coastal-inspired homeware brand XV Stripes is eking every last second of summer with its luxury blankets and throws.

Inspired by life on the Isle of Wight, XV Stripes’ indulgent throws and blankets are very soft, very cosy and very, very big! They have been designed to snuggle into, whether that’s on the beach, a balcony overlooking the sea or just the sofa.

Izzey Hung, Founder of XV Stripes, said: “Blankets and throws are at the heart of our collection.

“Whether you’re enjoying a relaxing afternoon on the patio, curling up with a good book, or enjoying the last few summer evenings, our products are designed to elevate your experience.

“Our blankets and throws offer the perfect balance of warmth and comfort, allowing you to enjoy every last second of summer.”

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, each piece has been manufactured by British designers and are made from either recycled cotton fibres or British wool.

With the coast at the heart of the design, Izzey has worked closely with manufacturers to ensure the environment is at the heart of each product.

Izzey added: “We are committed to sourcing fabrics and fibres from sustainable origins. The very air and oceans that inspire us are echoed in every thread, creating a connection between our products and the natural world.”

Dreamers. Illustration:

Life as you perceive & interpret it. My life is about images.

I started creating images Back When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth. I’ve worked as an award-winning freelance illustrator for over 40 years, with clients across the world. I’ve exhibited my artwork in several local and national shows; one-man exhibitions, and I have two illustrations in the permanent collection of the Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas, Texas. A lot of my work has been architectural; some has been for children’s books; and the rest comprise a large portfolio of images.

When I ventured out on this Illustrator gig, I wanted to illustrate Adventure Stories. I studied the great illustrators of the 19th and 20th Centuries, and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. I wanted to use realism to illustrate adventure stories. The sort of books one could find in libraries, Back When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth. I spent about 10 years honing my skills and learning to illustrate digitally. Sadly, the Children’s Illustration market left me behind. There are few illustration opportunities today for Adventure illustrations for children, using adult characters. There was a time when Children’s Books were just about the same as books for adults, but with illustrations and less gore.

I have an improbable goal of bringing them back.
