‘Take in The Tide’ at Greenwich Peninsula
E
xpedite the changing of the seasons by shaking off gloomy monochrome along with the gloomy mood - and feast your eyes on some of the most colourful outdoor sculptures in the capital right on our doorstep, at Greenwich Peninsula. The Tide is a pedestrian walkway initially 1km in length, running from Peninsula Square and along the riverside, but eventually stretching 5km around the whole of Greenwich Peninsula. With the surrounding Peninsula neighbourhood, the Tide is home to an impressive collection of works from some world-renowned artists including Allen Jones, Morag Mysercough, Anthony Gormley and no less than six Damien Hirst sculptures - possibly the largest free-to-view collection of his works anywhere. One of the latest installations is from Turner Prize nominee Ian Davenport. Famous for his poured paintings, Davenport has created Poured Staircase: a river of colour cascading down the Tide steps in irresistible candy stripes. This is the first site-specific work from Davenport, and it’s brilliantly realised, encouraging visitors to walk and play along the artwork as it flows down this transitional space. “I have seen my artworks take shape all across the world, in some of the most beautiful
16 FEBRUARY 2024
locations.” said the artist. “It’s incredibly exciting to see it now come to life on Greenwich Peninsula, so close to my home and in an area of London I love. I enjoy seeing echoes of the fluid form reflected back in the shape of The Tide, and in the proximity to the river.” For more sculptural serotonin, you can find The River in Verse installed on the glass facades surrounding Davenport’s work. London-based, Beirut-born artist Marwan Kaabour incorporates nine languages spoken by local Greenwich communities in this work: a series of multilingual poetic extracts that contemplate water, its fluidity and expressiveness, set on a rainbow-coloured dichroic background. Step off the Tide to find Rangoli Mirrored Cosmos, by the rapidly rising star of London’s graphic art scene, Murugiah. Murugiah combines his Sri Lankan Heritage, Western upbringing and architectural training to present a modern take on the Hindu tradition of Rangoli: celebratory mandala designs. This 3D manifestation rises out of Peninsula Square: a colourful illuminated flower as striking at dusk as it is in the day. Treasured Memories Looking for peace of mind, security and affordability? Look no further.
H
i there, I’m a Chislehurst-based wedding photographer, with over 14 years experience. I can honestly say that I still love my job - so much so, that I don’t think of it as a job, more a vocation in life. Each wedding is unique, and that’s what makes it fun! I love working in different venues in and around Kent. It gives me that drive to continue making clients happy. When I sense a nervous bride, I start by chatting away and then by showing her the photos as we go along. This often infuses them with a sense of confidence, as they can then see what the camera sees!
24 FEBRUARY 2024
I even help brides and bridesmaids into their dresses and have been known to curl hair - in a hair emergency! Friends often ask me how I got in to photography. Much to my husband’s irritation of me re-telling this story, it was actually the fact that I dated a paparazzi photographer. We travelled the world to spot celebrities, and it was when my photo’s ended up in Hello and Heat magazine, as well as The Sun newspaper, I thought I’d have a go! Brad Pitt was quite easy on the lens too! Where does this flair come from? Well, I always loved art and drawing as a child, and I have a degree in Graphic Design which encompassed photography. I then became a Graphic Designer for 10 years, and now a photographer. I always try and give that little bit more, to make me stand out from other photographers, even helping them with ideas and giving them contacts for DJ’s and cake-makers etc. I am a calm, yet confident woman with a discreet creative approach, so you can be sure you’ll get excellent results if you book me, and we’ll have a laugh on the way as I am by your (or your son or daughter’s) side for most of the day. And I also help the day run to schedule, where I can. If you fancy a chat, please pick up the phone and call, Whatsap me or drop me an email. I’d love to hear from you!

As Executive Principle here for over 16 years, it fills me with immense pride to extend a warm invitation for you and your children to embark on an unforgettable journey with us. children in the Early Years all the way through to our Year 6 children preparing for the next steps in their education. It is this buzz that captures the heart of our unique school, where importance is placed on celebrating the individual and the belief that all children can be anything that they want to be. Our school is a place where children are happy, confident, and proud of their achievements, both inside and outside of the classroom. Our varied and inspiring curriculum is meticulously designed to motivate and challenge every child to reach their true potential. We take real pride in our personalised approach to learning, providing a platform from which every child can flourish. Here at Breaside, our pupils thrive on challenge,
developing a growth mindset that fills them with pride in their learning journey, fostering a continuous pursuit of achievement. Our commitment to excellence is reflected in the outstanding results our pupils achieve—consistently surpassing national expectations. What makes us even prouder is the extensive and distinguished list of leavers’ destinations our students venture towards. No matter the path they choose, we are delighted that our children move on to schools perfectly suited for them, equipped with the skills and confidence for a successful future. A Breaside education however, is about so much more than academics. At the very heart is an unwavering focus on the wellbeing of our children, ensuring that our school environment is a place where they feel safe, secure, valued, and happy. Our safeguarding culture is truly embedded and underpins the foundations of our school, and our excellent pastoral approach places emphasis on developing each child as an individual. From the very start of their journey with us, our youngest children enjoy the benefits of our on-site Forest School and begin learning outside the classroom through a variety of day trips. As they progress, a host of residential trips expand their horizons. Our programme of extra-curricular activities is hugely popular, with children from Kindergarten to Year 6 engaging in instrumental lessons, language learning and creative arts where a focus on our children’s health and well-being is complemented by the outdoor gym and trim trail, and a wide variety of sporting opportunities for all.

The wealth of opportunities at Breaside is not just about acquiring knowledge; it’s about inspiring every child to become the change-makers of the future. Our program of character development, coupled with outstanding academic provision, is what makes Breaside truly special. Critical life skills in innovation, creativity, collaboration, and technology are instilled, laying the foundation for well-rounded individuals. At Breaside, we take immense pride in our longstanding tradition of academic success. Our focus goes beyond merely preparing pupils for exams; we inspire a genuine love for learning that extends far beyond our classrooms. Fostering independence and resilience is ingrained in our ethos, ensuring that each child is equipped with the right balance of skills for their future roles in the big wide world that awaits them. PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS
The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions
T
heir grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated. Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent. The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.
30 FEBRUARY 2024
“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”
In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives. The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated. Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist. “Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

ong before I took up the headship at Bickley Park, I was well aware of the School’s long standing reputation and tradition as an outstanding Prep School. With this in mind, I was keen to hear more from our families to find out exactly what they love about Bickley Park. What was it that attracted them to us in the first place and what did they consider to be our greatest strengths now they’d joined? As expected, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and several aspects of school life stood out.
“Our small class sizes ensure that we explore, identify and celebrate the strengths of every child, no matter where they lie”
32 FEBRUARY 2024
Small Class Sizes and a Family Feel Our small class sizes ensure that we explore, identify and celebrate the strengths of every child, no matter where they lie. Our priority is the children’s happiness in their learning and this in turn is reflected in their outstanding progress. Over the years, we have continued to enjoy excellent results at both 11+ and 13+, confident that the way we teach is excellent preparation for any entrance exam. This forms an important part of how we prepare our pupils for their future and complements our broad and balanced curriculum offering through our Four Quadrants of Learning.
Preparing children to reach their potential From the moment a child starts their journey with us, we are determined to spark and nurture a life-long love of learning in them. Whether they are busy learning Forest School skills, having fun in the mud kitchen, or out and about on trips that tie in with our creative curriculum, the children in our Nursery and Reception embrace every element of our unique Four Quadrants of Learning. This well-rounded learning experience encompasses Academics, Arts, Community, and Sports and Outdoor Learning. Together the Four Quadrants arm our pupils with skills for life: a love of learning; the ability to communicate confidently; the desire to contribute meaningfully to society and show initiative, resilience, teamwork, and the confidence to take risks. It is this firm commitment to all-round success which led the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) judging Bickley Park as ‘excellent’ in March 2023 for both Pupils’ Attainment and Pupils’ Personal Development, the highest possible grading for an Independent School. In addition, Bickley Park was named Prep School of the Year in 2021 for our ‘well-articulated, coherent and holistic Four Quadrants of Learning programme’, a proud testament to the hard work and dedication of our whole community.
“It is my absolute privilege to lead such an amazing team of staff and to be a part of such a warm and special community” Outstanding Facilities Both of our school sites boast excellent facilities which allow the children from Nursery through to the Senior Years to develop and excel. From the purpose-built science labs, art rooms and theatre through to the on-site swimming pool, climbing wall and astro-turf pitches, the school provides a breadth of opportunity both in and out of the classroom. It is my absolute privilege to lead such an amazing team of staff and to be a part of such a warm and special community. But don’t just take my word for it – come and see for yourself. I would love to meet you and show you around.

Peatland Pioneer Mayfield student clinches International Geography Award
A
nnabel, a Sixth Former at Mayfield - an independent day and boarding school for girls aged 11-18 - has won the Royal Geographical Society’s Young Geographer of the Year competition for her age group. This prestigious international award encourages young people to think creatively and analytically about geographical themes. The annual competition, held by the Royal Geographical Society in partnership with Geographical magazine, has been running for over 20 years and this year around 35,000 young people took part. The theme for 2023 was ‘A blueprint for the future’, with entrants being invited to share innovative ideas to address problems in areas such as food production and supply, energy and sustainability, resources, population growth, travel, biodiversity and more. Annabel’s entry proposed a ‘brownprint’ rather than a blueprint – a plan that involved preserving and regenerating peatlands as a way of solving some of our global challenges. The competition judges said: “Linking to agriculture, carbon storage, hazard reduction and water quality, Annabel demonstrated a deep knowledge of the complex way in which these geographical issues are interlinked – great work Annabel!” The 2023 winning pupils were awarded their certificates by television and radio presenter, Tom Heap, at a ceremony held at the Society in December. Professor Joe Smith, Director of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) said, “As a

global community we are facing many complex geographical problems now which will become increasingly critical in the future. The ‘blueprints’ submitted give me hope that the next generation of geographers is well equipped with the skills and understanding to drive forward the changes needed to ensure a sustainable future.” Annabel said, “I’m thrilled to be honoured with this award! The regeneration of peatlands is something I’m truly passionate about, so having my efforts acknowledged means a lot. I am enjoying diving deeper into Geography at A level and want to pursue it further at university. I’m looking forward to the exciting journey ahead!” Mayfield offers over 25 different subject choices at A level and last year celebrated another impressive set of A level results, with a 100% pass rate and over half the grades awarded being A* or A. Mayfield will be hosting Open Mornings on 15th March and 26th April. To book, please visit mayfieldgirls.org or contact Mrs Shirley Coppard, Director of Admissions, on 01435 874642.

Life at Babington House School Enjoying a peaceful setting located in the heart of Chislehurst, South-East London, Babington has been a key part of the local community since 1887 and remains the school of choice for parents in the area.
H
eadmaster, Mr Tim Lello, tells us about life at Babington House School, an Independent Day School for boys and girls aged 3-18.
Providing academic success within a supportive environment When you walk through the doors of Babington House, you are immediately met with a feeling of warmth and happiness but also of aspiration and ambition. Alongside our friendly, caring approach, we are also highly focussed on academic success and a love of learning. Bright students who are on target to go to top universities such as Oxford or Imperial, need to be supported and guided on their journey and it is in fact, our pastoral support that is at the heart of our success in all its forms. A harmonious, balanced community Babington passionately believes in a co-educational setting because it creates a harmonious, balanced community which is reflective of society and the world of university and work. It is a school where wonderful memories are made and firm friendships are formed.
Inspiring Teachers, Inspiring Children As an all-through school with almost 500 students, we provide opportunities for sport, drama, art and music and a host of other experiences outside the classroom. Leadership opportunities abound at Babington and our students develop and grow in confidence throughout their time here and enjoy coming to school. “The best thing about Babington is that everyone knows you and everyone looks out for you. My teachers are really kind and fun but also push me to learn new things and get me to think about things in different ways. I love it here! The sport is amazing as well.” Zach, Year 6 Our students are given the best foundation possible, that enables them to thrive and to one day step out into the world with confidence, determination and the courage to realise their dreams. I welcome you to come and see what life is like at Babington House School for yourself. Mr Tim Lello, Headmaster

and a great number of after-school clubs; coding, fencing, taekwondo and chess to name just a few. We offer a wide and balanced curriculum that challenges and excites. Children throughout the Prep School have specialist teachers for music, sport, Modern Foreign Languages and IT. In Years 5 & 6 we introduce Latin and pupils in Year 6 have specialist teaching in maths and science as we prepare them for the transition into the Senior School. Again, this is made as seamless as possible as pupils are already familiar with the Senior School staff, school layout and expectations. Likewise, staff will know the pupils well and have thorough records and assessment data that will be ongoing as they progress towards external exams and Sixth Form. From Pre-Prep to Sixth Form, our Mission Statement is at the heart of school life and states ‘We strive to develop and nurture each child’s unique talents. Learning through nature Outdoor education gives children a chance to develop through engaging with their environment and learn more about the natural world around us. The concept is central to learning at Radnor House Sevenoaks, an independent day school for children aged 2 – 18.
T
he school is pioneering a more ecofriendly approach to learning and is improving its environmental impact, its efforts have been rewarded with a Kent Green Schools Award and an Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction. Radnor House’s Pre School prepares nursery school-aged children for school with access to the same facilities and learning opportunities as the rest of the students. This includes swimming lessons, Forest School, art and drama sessions and use of a newly developed outdoor play and learning area. The Forest School is a magical and exciting multisensory experience that instils a love of the outdoors from an early age. Used weekly by all Radnor House pupils up to Year 3, the area encourages children to spend time in the fresh air and learn through observation, experimentation and play. Set in impressive grounds and woodlands, Radnor House Sevenoaks has designed a programme of Forest School activities, which will

motivate children to become curious about their natural surroundings and develop respect for the environment. Led by a specialist Forest School Leader, lessons include singing around a campfire, building dens, creating bug hotels and making crafts and tools with natural materials. Philippa Lang, Head of the Prep School at Radnor House, says: “Research has proven that children are stimulated by spending time outside and that Forest School activities build confidence, communication and problem-solving skills. They also support emotional wellbeing, promote physical health and encourage engagement. This outdoor classroom is a free and open learning environment giving children the opportunity to gain practical skills and laying a foundation for a lifelong love of nature and exercise.” “As children move up the school, their environmental education is nurtured through our Outdoor Learning programme, starting in Year 4, and activities including beekeeping, tree planting and enrolling in our student-led Eco Committee.”
Children joining Reception in 2024 and 2025 and their parents are invited to join Radnor House Sevenoaks for a Forest Adventure Morning on Friday 1st March. Outdoor activities will be followed by story time and refreshments in the Prep School Library. The Prep School Open Morning is on Saturday 16th March. forest school, a pond, a large outdoor adventure play area, a sensory room, a large sandpit, and a large playing field, ensure that children have the space, freedom, encouragement, and wealth of appropriate activities to develop into well-rounded young children who are confident and ready for anything. We believe strongly that we are laying the foundations for a child’s lifelong learning journey. We provide every child with the best possible start, where we foster a real love of learning and thirst for knowledge that will see them through their whole nursery and school career and beyond. None of this would be possible without creating an environment that allows the children to feel confident in everything that they do. Trust between staff, children, and parents is essential in creating an environment where children can thrive. Parents receive weekly planning overviews so they can see what the children will be doing throughout the week. All our rooms have individual key group planning which identifies the next steps for each, individual child. All activities are planned to inspire and challenge children. We want them to take risks in an environment that they feel safe and secure in, in the knowledge that there are trusted adults to support them and to help them learn from their mistakes. This in turn helps develop emotional resilience that is critical to future success.

The 4 ingredients that improve examination success. It’s that time of year again. All over the UK students watch with varying degrees of anticipation or despair as exams loom over the horizon. NumberWorks’nWords has advice on how to reduce stress and ensure the most effective approach to examination study.
F
irst, designate a good place to study. Eliminate interruptions: no mobile; if television or radio are present their volume should be low, as research shows that study is most effective in a quiet environment. The second essential ingredient is motivation. If your child is not naturally self-motivated, use the following steps to increase motivation levels. The first step is to answer the question, “why do I need to study?” What’s the student’s objective? Getting into a good school or university course? To keep up with peers? All children are different, but most see the benefits of achieving well in their exams. This can be as simple as writing down the desired outcome
and placing it in prominent view in the study space. Or it may be that a certain level of achievement may earn a reward or treat. Once motivation is sparked, it can be maintained by putting a study plan in place to ensure that the student studies a pre-determined amount at pre-set times. The third ingredient is method. Depending on the subjects involved, there are a number of excellent study methods. A simple one for many subjects is the pyramid study method. Students identify the content they need to learn and, on a flash card, write down key sentences from paragraphs in their notes. On the reverse side of the card, they note the key word or phrase. Once all cards are completed and re-read, they can be used for self-testing or a helper can test the student. Finally, if your child is anxious about the upcoming exams, now is the time to give NumberWorks’nWords a call. NumberWorks’nWords centres offer specialist maths and English tuition to school-aged students. Call now on 020 8289 9204 for a free assessment and see how we can help your child approach exams with confidence.

THE POWER OF HOPE
Hurst College Commemorates the Holocaust
A
s part of a series of Holocaust Commemoration events this week, Hurst welcomed two Holocaust survivors—Marcel Ladenheim BEM and Dorit Oliver-Wolff BEM—to share their stories with the College community. Interviewed by broadcaster Natasha Kaplinsky OBE, herself a member of the Prime Minister’s Holocaust Commission, Marcel told of the harrowing experiences his family suffered at the hands of the Nazi regime. Having fled to France following the Anschluss in 1938, Marcel’s parents hoped to find refuge in Paris, yet the capital soon fell to Nazi Occupation in 1940. Over the course of the war, Marcel’s father was sent to Auschwitz, never to return, and his heavily pregnant mother suffered a severe nervous breakdown, for which she was hospitalized. Marcel was thus forced to fend for himself, and was fortunate enough to be taken in by two brave sisters: Olga and Esther Masoli. He would only be reunited with his brother at the end of the war, when the pair moved to Manchester to live with their aunt and uncle. The following evening, Dorit shared the story of her equally troubling experiences of WWII. She remembers her childhood years with great 4468 FFEEBB RR UU AR 2 0 2240 2 4 AYR Y
clarity; nights spent risking discovery in air-raid shelters, escaping a German holding camp hidden in a laundry basket, and spending nine months in a cellar without any light. At the end of the war, Dorit emerged as a nine-year-old weighing three stone and without hair, with supposedly just three months to live. Yet she was absolutely determined to carry on with her life, and did exactly that—Dorit went on to become an extremely successful recording artist in Germany and, more recently, has written a book detailing her wartime experiences: Behind the Smile: From Yellow Star to Pop Star. At a time when there are increasingly fewer Holocaust survivors still with us, it was an absolute privilege for our pupils, parents, and staff to hear these testimonies first-hand. Throughout their talks, both Marcel and Dorit emphasized the absolute necessity of continuing to remember and reflect upon the atrocities of the Holocaust, as well as the lessons we must learn from this terrible period of History. In particular, Marcel stressed that while he can never forgive the Nazi regime for the Final Solution, we must turn our gaze forwards to the future to ensure that ‘never again’ is not just a phrase, but our reality. hppc.co.uk

Opening the door to
your child’s future A
A guide to School Open Days
s we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.
TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A SCHOOL OPEN DAY… • Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting • It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly • Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there. • Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally • Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.
QUESTIONS TO ASK AT A SCHOOL OPEN DAY…. Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school. • How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam? • Are there high expectations and high academic achievements? • Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too 50 FEBRUARY 2024

compelled in pressure) • What are the classroom sizes? • What is expected of my child with regard to homework? • Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia? • Is there a bullying policy? • What lunchtime meals are available? • What sports and music facilities are available? • What after school clubs and trips are available? • How many pupils branch out into further education? After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.

Tips for parents with children starting secondary school I It’s a new life stage for kids and parents alike, says Claire Spreadbury.
t’s the end of an era when your child leaves primary school. Your life and support network have been intertwined within a community that’s always at the end of the phone – if not a WhatsApp message – but now big school is looming and it’s time to move on. Some of that network moves on with you, but a lot of it won’t. And discovering the best ways to tackle secondary – and all the difficulties that can come with it – is often tricky. Arm yourself with these tips and you should breeze through. Get them kitted out with epic new stationery Smiggle might rule the school at primary, but once they’re 11, Stabilo pens and highlighters are top of the lust list, and Paperchase becomes your go-to. Pencil cases should be sleek and cool, and funky organisers and pads make the whole experience feel fresh.
Label everything Once they’re starting secondary, everything seems to cost quite a bit more – the fancy stationery, the school bag, the uniform. To avoid pouring all that money down the drain, be sure to label everything, so you can claim it back if (when) it gets misplaced. You can buy name stamps which don’t wash out, stickers which genuinely stay put or even grab a good old Sharpie and write on the labels. Deck them out in cool shoes When it comes to shoe buying on a budget shop online. And if they’re picky, the likes of Next and
52 FEBRUARY 2024
Very let you order several pairs at once, so you can try them all on, return the ones you don’t want and only pay for the ones you do. Oh, and try Kickers. All the cool kids are in them. Get the tech set-up right We’ve all learned the hard way that homeschooling on shared tech is somewhat problematic. The good news, however, is live lessons are a breeze at secondary school, especially if they have their own computer. The Honor MagicBook 14 is ultra light and fast with an all-day battery and fast charging, all while minimising blue light by 50%. Google Chromebooks are also a dream, especially as most schools use Google Classroom. Get to know other parents When your child makes new friends, it’s much harder to get to know their parents. Lots of kids make their own way to school, and they have a phone to organise their own socials. This can feel a little bit worrying when your son or daughter is talking about going to a sleepover and you’ve never even met the child whose house they are staying at, let alone their mum or dad. Undoubtedly, this will get harder. You will be an embarrassing and interfering parent, so before they reach the Kevin The Teenager stage, try to get parents’ numbers, invite kids to your house, ask their mum or dad in when they come to pick them up – it can really help to reassure you.
Label everything, so you can claim it back if (when) it gets misplaced

wner, Gail Thomas, explains how she got involved in this thriving business based in Badlesmere, just a few miles from Lenham on the Ashford Road. Gail says: ‘I live at Eastwell Park, where my partner is the head keeper. Originally I was working for a national house builder selling houses but took voluntary redundancy. ‘ ‘Enjoying a brief period of being a lady of leisure, I popped into a local shop, the Kent Wool Growers, for a pair of Wellington boots. Whilst there trying on boots, I chatted to the assistant who told me he had just got himself a new job and
would be leaving. He then mentioned that they hadn’t filled the vacancy and that the job would be perfect for me! And so I ended up working for Kent Wool Growers for 7 years; a great place, very interesting and with great customers, fantastic characters and never a dull moment. This is where I learnt all about clothing, footwear and – most importantly – good customer service. Chatting to a friend whilst having lunch in my local, I mentioned that I might like to go it alone and open my own shop. She then told me about possible premises that were only a few miles from home! The very next morning I viewed and secured it straight away. So started the ‘In The Country’ venture here in Badlesmere. Over the years I have added to the stock and am proud to say, I offer a fantastic range of clothing, footwear and accessories for men, women and children – oh! And mustn’t forget the dogs! The shop has been open for nearly 9 years now and I can honestly say it was the best decision I have made and have never regretted it for a moment.’ You can contact Gail on 01233 742700 or check the website at www.inthecountrykent.co.uk

25 BILLION WAYS TO LOVE YOUR GUT! February is often referred to as the month of love, as it is National Heart month and Valentine’s Day falls mid-month. With this in mind, we wanted to take the opportunity to talk about the ways that friendly bacteria can help to give your gut some love this year. What are friendly bacteria? Friendly bacteria are also known as live bacteria, live cultures, or probiotics. They are bacteria that are found in large numbers in foods and supplements, which when eaten, act as proxies or substitutes to provide support for the bacteria that live naturally in our digestive tract. Foods that contain these friendly bacteria include sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi, kombucha and plain cultured live yoghurt. Eating these foods daily will provide us with many billions of bacteria, which can help to support our microbiome with no need for supplementation. In modern western society however, few of us regularly consume or enjoy these probiotic, bacteria-rich foods and friendly bacteria supplements can be a convenient and preferable alternative. How do friendly bacteria support the gut? We all have trillions of bacteria living both in and on our body, known as the human microbiome, which significantly outnumber our own human cells and
work symbiotically with our bodies to support our health. Billions of these bacteria are found in our intestines and referred to collectively as the gut microbiome, where certain strains and species perform specific tasks that support our gut, immune and overall health. The myriad of functions of different strains of gut bacteria includes (but is in no way limited to) supporting the structure of the digestive tract, defending against pathogens entering the body, producing vitamins and other substances used by the body, and supporting energy production.
Friendly bacteria or probiotics work by becoming part of the gut microbiome and supporting the colonies of bacteria already present in performing these tasks. Why 25 Billion friendly bacteria? ProVen Probiotics For Adults – 25 Billion is the flagship product in our range. It is the original product that first launched our brand in 2012 and has been the subject of more than 15 clinical trials undertaken over two decades across a wide variety of health conditions and consumer groups, including men, women and children. This product contains 25 billion of our proprietary multi-strain live bacteria blend per two capsules as this is the dosage used in most of our adult clinical trials and at which we have seen benefits in relation to supporting the microbiome and positively impacting symptoms. All Pro-Ven products are available at www.provenprobiotics.co/uk - scan the QR code on the top of the page to access our shop.

Jewellery for your Walls
When you walk through the doors at KATA Jewellery, you quickly realise they are much more than a Jewellery shop.
B
eautiful pieces of unique fine Jewellery, handmade using 100% recycled gold & platinum, glint from within the bespoke display cases. When you manage to tear your eyes away from the gorgeous jewels and gemstones on offer, and cast your eyes upwards, you will see the walls are adorned with the most amazing fine artworks curated by Jennifer Kata. KATA play host to three exhibitions a year, each showcasing two unique artists. Jennifer hand-picks each artist, pairing together two artists which are complementary to each other, and yet stand strongly on their own, creating a unique interplay between the two. KATA’s first art exhibition for 2024 is titled – ‘People Observed, A Unique Perspective’. It unites the works of award-winning oil painter, Frances Featherstone, and the vibrant street photography by Frederique Bellec. Both artists feature people in their work, portraits, but not as we would traditionally think of them.
Frances Featherstone lives in Groombridge, near Tunbridge Wells. Jennifer has curated a wonderful mix of Featherstone’s unique and diverse portraiture, a particular favourite being the unique series of works entitled ‘From the Perspective of Angels’. In these, Featherstone paints her subject from an aerial perspective, which compresses the scene into a wonderfully rich tapestry of texture, pattern and detail. The photographs by London-based, Frederique Bellec are vibrant & urban – immediately eyecatching & captivating. Bellec’s work focuses on the play between light & shadow, and the pattern & texture created within architecture, each piece softened by the addition of a figure, captured unawares by her photographers lens. The human stories of the city are elegantly framed by straight lines and towering structures, made vibrant with the artificial light of the urban environment. The result is compelling images with a graphic quality. KATA Jewellery & Arts gallery will have two more exhibitions this year and I am very excited to see the new creative offerings they present. Each exhibition has a hotly anticipated ‘Meet the Artist’ event – to be the first to hear about the next one, I’d recommend signing up to KATA’s newsletter at katajewellery.com

Your dream home? Start writing your Wish List! You can build a new home or renovate your current one and love the result. However, many people don’t.

n 2017, the independent New Homes Review survey showed that 57% of new build properties weren’t completed on time; 26% of homeowners expressed dissatisfaction with their builder; and when the property was habitable, 87% of new build homeowners stated that they had snags that required further work. By contrast, IQ Property Services provides its clients with a smooth journey from creating Wish Lists to project completion, earning testimonials like this from Mrs M in Sevenoaks: “We engaged IQ early in the development stage of our self-build project and have been particularly impressed by their eye for detail, their concern for the excellence of the build quality on our project, and their careful oversight of its progress. The team bring a depth of experience that means that nothing gets missed, and their wide networks of local contacts minimise any delay that might otherwise come from finding key suppliers. It also supports excellent cost management. Best of all, it was through IQ that we secured our contractors, negotiated the terms of the tender, and as a result have remained not only on schedule, but ahead of it, since we started on site... I would recommend them without hesitation to anyone embarking on a build, and feel very lucky that we secured their help on our home.”
Tony Cheeseman, Founder and Director of IQ Property Services, says “We like to be involved as early as possible so that we can get to know you and your requirements and thus assist and advise on the concept design, design development, and selection of the professional and construction team. IQ offers three service options: Platinum, our exclusive project management service which completely takes on your project. You set out your vision, and we deliver it. Gold, a flexible project management package with the opportunity for the client to take on aspects of the process themselves. Silver, offering advice, guidance and support for an hourly rate or a fixed monthly fee.” The company also offers management and maintenance services and has clients who have enjoyed that service for over 25 years. It’s time to prune Once the winter garden begins to thaw and the ground isn’t waterlogged or frozen, it’s a good time to head outside with a sharp pair of secateurs to cut down spent flowers and tidy up old foliage.
T
he impact on an untidy herbaceous border is instant and the compost heap will benefit from your efforts. The right tools are essential for the job: Bypass secateurs are perfect for rose and shrub pruning as they will not damage the stems of delicate plants. Snips are sharp and more pointed and are ideal for soft clematis or similar plants. If you are pruning more woody shrubs Pruning saws are more suited as they are easier to hold and have a sharper blade to cut through thicker branches, ensuring you do not do any damage to your plants. Our new UK made carbon steel tool range from Ames, endorsed by David Domoney, have all the tools you need for your gardening season. Hellebores the big reveal Hellebores with their flush of colour in the depth of winter, require a tidy up at this point. The leathery, evergreen leaves that have provided protection, often obscure the blooms, so cut and clear away any dead foliage to reveal their glorious petals. Why should I Prune Roses Pruning is arguably the most important job you can do for your roses. It gives your rose shape, structure and encourages new blooms for the season ahead. When should I Prune? We recommend pruning in late winter/early spring, when the first growth is beginning. It is ok to prune earlier, but it can be more difficult to identify the less healthy stems that you will want to prune out. If you still haven’t pruned by March it is still better to do so.
“So, although the garden may appear to be sleeping, in February it does however provide us with plenty to do and keep us busy”

Ensure your secateurs are sharp and clean and prune down to just above a bud at a slanted angle to ensure any water runs off and frost does not get down into the tip. You can give your roses a hard prune and take them down to about 60cm from the ground or prune out any dead stems or branches that are rubbing and crossing over, this will help to open the roses up and allow air to circulate which cuts down the risk of disease. February is also the time to prune late-flowering clematis. They should be cut down to about 10cm (4”) from the ground to encourage new growth. Wisteria also needs to be pruned now. Take all the side shoots back to 2 -3 buds to tidy it up for spring and help prevent the leaves from obscuring the beautiful flowers. So, although the garden may appear to be sleeping in February, it does however provide us with plenty to do and keep us busy. The team look forward to welcoming you into our centre and helping you with any advice you need. Rose advice and images provided by David Austin Roses

HOUSE & GARDEN
Making Properties Beautiful & Functional Gardens Homes and Commercial Improvements
T
he tools and paintbrushes of the Gardens Homes and Commercial Improvements (GHCI) team crop up in some surprising places! From church halls and kitchens to the function rooms of rugby clubs, and many a house, this helpful crew loves to transform buildings and gardens. Tackling jobs as small as painting a room, to the challenge of painting a whole house and outbuildings, the GHCI team carries their motto ‘We don’t cut corners, we paint them’, proudly wherever they go. GHCI also love to work in the great outdoors, caring for gardens, weeding, mowing, and aerating lawns, as well as looking after flowerbeds and shrubbery. Founder Gian is an experienced and welltravelled decorator. He said, “The story started when I was travelling in America. I was moving about, having a great lifestyle, and learning about new people and cultures. I found that my skills as a painter were frequently called on. That paid my way. I learned on the job, but now, years on, I can hold down an expert conversation on the details of paint colours, characteristics, and types, surfaces, damp, and varnishes. The work that GHCI does, though, is much wider. We improve homes! Major renovations and refurbishments we leave to architects and builders, though we can work with them as part of a delivery team. we are most comfortable is working in homes and community spaces like churches, halls, and venues, bringing their appearance up to date, and often undoing years of neglect and misuse. We get great satisfaction from seeing sometimes awful ‘before’ rooms to leaving them fresh, functional, and attractive ‘after’ rooms. Our core work is everyday maintenance, home and commercial improvements, but we like a challenge!” Proud Members of the Painters and Decorators Association, GHCI can take on a wide variety of improvements, from tiling to assembling and installing kitchens, fitting bathrooms and showers, door and skirting restorations, to wardrobe and flat pack furniture assembly. GHCI loves to assist where a bit of expertise can make a home or commercial premises better. As Gian says, “There may be jobs that are too large, but no job is too small. Give us a call!” GHCI are based in the London borough of Bromley, but work across the south-east of England. You can contact Gian to arrange a free estimate.
