Enhancing Ightham Mote A Blend of History and Modern Conservation
In the tranquil countryside of Kent, a historic gem is undergoing a transformation. Ightham Mote, with its rich history, is not only preserving its past but also embracing a sustainable future through its innovative infrastructure project and an engaging summer season of programming.
Unlocking the future at Ightham Mote
Beginning with the relocation of parking spaces, the project has progressed swiftly, now focusing on construction of a sustainable Visitor Reception and Shop building. One of the pivotal steps in this endeavour was the removal of cars from the historic Walled Garden, clearing the path for its future reinstatement.
Moreover, efforts to enrich the landscape include the planting of 700 new trees, with more in the pipeline. This initiative not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also contributes to the ecological balance of the area. Visitors are invited to participate in this noble endeavour by sponsoring a tree, fostering a sense of community stewardship.
A Summer of Selby Spies at Ightham Mote
Amidst the hustle of construction, Ightham Mote unveils its summer season of Selby Spies. Step into the shoes of Tudor spymasters, delving into the intrigues of Elizabeth I’s court and delve into the illustrious history of the Selby family, who played a pivotal role in the property’s legacy. This summer of Selby Spies offers a new exhibition and interactive experiences for families, with activities ranging from code-breaking challenges to a themed outdoor trail.
Talks and reenactments to take place on:
22th - 24th August: Plots, Spies & Crowns 29th - 31th August: Challenges, Uprisings & Battles
In the midst of construction and transformation, Ightham Mote remains a beacon of resilience, embracing the past while forging ahead towards a sustainable future. With each brick laid and each tree planted, it reaffirms its commitment to preserving heritage and nurturing nature for generations to come.
Further information about this ongoing infrastructure project and upcoming events is available on the Ightham Mote website.

FISH UNION
Gilt Head Bream
Fillet, Pickled
Fennel, Carrot and
Cucumber Slaw,
Basil Oil
Fennel is at peak availability during the Summer months, so now is the time to enjoy it at its best. We love its mild liquorice flavour which compliments the bream perfectly making an ideal Summer dish with a crunch.
Ingredients: Serves 2
Prep time: 25-30 minutes
Cook time: 5-7 minutes
• 1 600-800g Gilt head bream filleted (available from Fish Union, ask your fishmonger to prepare)
For the slaw:
• 2 medium sized carrots
• 1 head fennel
• 1 cucumber
• 100g salt
For the pickling liquid:
• 140g sugar
• 200ml distilled malt vinegar
• 200ml water
• Pinch of salt
• For the basil oil
• 1 bunch basil
• 100ml extra virgin rapeseed oil
Method
1. Start by preparing the slaw, thinly slice the fennel, carrots and cucumber, place in a suitably sized bowl and add the salt. Give it a good mix to evenly distribute the salt. After approx 10 mins the sliced veg should have softened slightly, wash off excess salt under cold running water. Drain and set to one side.
2. Now for the pickling liquid, add the water, vinegar, sugar and a pinch of salt to a pan, gently heat until the sugar and salt have fully dissolved, allow to cool then pour over the drained vegetables and allow to stand for 10-15 mins.
3. To make your own basil oil, simply blanch the basil leaves in salted water for 30 seconds to 1 minute, and then chill in iced water until cold. Squeeze the excess water out and puree with the rapeseed oil - stick blenders are handy for this.
4. Season the fish and then add it to a medium hot pan using a neutral cooking oil placing the fish skin side down. Cook for 5-7 minutes, you will see the flesh turn pearly white, towards the end of cooking time flip the fillet on its flesh side and remove from the heat.
5. Plate your pickled slaw, top with the bream, drizzle with basil oil and enjoy!

Fresh Hopes For Survival
Birth of wildcat kittens in Kent wildlife park sparks hope for rarest UK mammal
By Rebecca Speare-Cole, PA sustainability reporter
The birth of wildcat kittens at a Kent wildlife park has sparked fresh hopes for the survival of Britain’s rarest mammal species, conservationists said.
The Wildwood Trust’s Herne Bay park, just outside Canterbury, said the litter were born around nine weeks ago in a dedicated off-show breeding enclosure, to parents Talla and Blair.
Laura Gardner, director of conservation at the trust, said the kittens will play an important role in bringing back the species from the “brink of extinction”.
European wildcats are considered rarer than the Bengal tiger and giant panda, and are the only native cat species surviving in Britain, with a small population still roaming the Scottish Highlands.
But with an estimated fewer than 300 individuals left, the population has been declared “functionally extinct”.
Ms Gardner said: “Wildwood has been breeding wildcats for over ten years, building knowledge and expertise of the species which has led to our amazing breeding success.
“By working together with the breeding programme partners, we are ensuring the beautiful wildcat has a future in Britain.”
The kittens at Wildwood will contribute to the wildcat conservation breeding programme coordinated by The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), which has been designed to support the restoration of the species in Britain.
A healthy population of reintroduced wildcats will help to restore the balance in the ecosystem by controlling numbers of prey animals, such as rabbits and rodents, and of predators such as foxes through competition for food, conservationists said.
This in turn can have a ripple effect across ecosystems, by which habitats for many more plant and wildlife species can be restored, they added.
Wildwood, which has a successful history of breeding wildcats, said the new kittens are the first to be born since the completion of dedicated breeding enclosures at the Herne Bay park.
Sally Holt, head of carnivores and small mammals at Wildwood, said the new facilities have been key in helping support the breeding of this secretive species.
“Wildcats have very particular den box preferences, so we worked hard with researchers to find the right design for the new enclosures,” she said.
“The off-show enclosures have created a quieter environment, which will help the kittens develop key survival skills without becoming habituated to people.”
“Our remote cameras mean we can monitor their behaviour and it’s been wonderful to see their characters develop.
“They have such a close bond already and enjoy playing and sleeping next to each other.”
Ms Holt said the kittens will undergo health checks with the park’s veterinary team in the coming days.
The team will also check their sex and gather data on neck circumference measurements for collaring research that will support future tracking and release success.
Wildwood Trust said people can support the wildcat conservation work at www.wildwoodtrust.org/support-us/save-the-wildcat.

A New Era for Cobham Hall
September 2025 will see the dawn of a new era for Cobham Hall, the renowned independent school near Gravesend, as it welcomes its first ever co-educational Year 7 cohort. Launched 60 years ago as a pioneering school for girls, in 2023 Cobham broke with tradition and opened its Sixth Form to boys.
Building on the unprecedented success of this move, and after consultation with all stakeholders, the school is delighted to announce that it will become fully coeducational from next year.
The first boy, George, joined Cobham Hall’s Sixth Form in January 2023. In September of the same year, the school recorded another first, opening its new boys’ boarding house in a wing of the 16th century manor it calls home. In February 2024, the school community elected their first ever boy to the democratically chosen Student Leadership Team, as Year 12 student, Jude, became Deputy Guardian (Deputy Head Student). With a new, larger cohort of boys set to join Year 12 this September, and the vibrant co-educational
Sixth Form going from strength to strength, Cobham believes the time is right to share its outstanding educational environment with boys from the age of 11.
“It has been a joy to see our Sixth Form boys flourish in Cobham’s unique family atmosphere,” says Head Wendy Barrett, “and we are excited now to be able to welcome our first co-ed Year 7 cohort into our supportive community.”
Set in fine historic buildings within 150 acres of Kent countryside yet only 30 minutes from central London’s buzz, Cobham is a school with a difference.
Non-selective, it offers a warm and friendly, diverse, tolerant and international environment where students feel safe to step out of their comfort zone, develop their curiosity and creativity, and to discover there is more in them than they dared believe. Skills such as creativity, confidence and communication, prized by universities and employers alike, are developed through an exclusive Perspectives Course, ensuring students emerge armed not only with outstanding academic grades but ready to take their place in our ever-changing world. The value of the programme has recently been recognised in the Muddy Stilettos Best Schools Awards, with Cobham being highly commended for the way in which it prepares its students for life after school.

A time of Excitement, Discovery and Preparation
Enjoying a peaceful setting located in the heart of Chislehurst, South-East London, Babington House has been a key part of the local community since 1887 and remains the school of choice for parents in the area. Headmaster, Mr Tim Lello, tells us about life at Babington House School, an Independent Day School for boys and girls aged 3-18.
Providing academic success within a supportive environment
When you walk through the doors of Babington House, you are immediately met with a feeling of warmth and happiness but also of aspiration and ambition. Alongside our friendly, caring approach, we are also highly focussed on academic success and a love of learning. Bright students who are on target to go to top universities such as Oxford or Imperial, need to be supported and guided on their journey and it is in fact, our pastoral support that is at the heart of our success in all its forms.
A harmonious, balanced community
Babington passionately believes in a co-educational setting because it creates a harmonious, balanced community which is reflective of society and the world of university and work.
It is a school where wonderful memories are made and firm friendships are formed across all year groups – the beauty of being an all-through school.
We inspire
As an all-through school with almost 500 students, we provide opportunities for sport, drama, art and music and a host of other experiences outside the classroom. Leadership opportunities abound at Babington and our students develop and grow in confidence throughout their time here and enjoy coming to school.
“The best thing about Babington is that everyone knows you and everyone looks out for you. My teachers are really kind and fun but also push me to learn new things and get me to think about things in different ways. I love it here! The sport is amazing as well.”
Zach, Year 6
Our students are given the best foundation possible, that enables them to thrive and to one day step out into the world with confidence, determination and the courage to realise their dreams.

Opening the door to your child’s future
A guide to School Open Days
As we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.
TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A SCHOOL OPEN DAY…
•Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting
•It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly
•Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there.
•Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally
•Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.
QUESTIONS TO ASK AT A SCHOOL OPEN DAY….
Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school.
•How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam?
•Are there high expectations and high academic achievements?
•Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too
“Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important”
compelled in pressure)
•What are the classroom sizes?
•What is expected of my child with regard to homework?
•Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia?
•Is there a bullying policy?
•What lunchtime meals are available?
•What sports and music facilities are available?
•What after school clubs and trips are available?
•How many pupils branch out into further education?
After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.
Choosing the Best Educational Support
In today’s competitive educational landscape, parents face the challenge of selecting the best support to enhance their children’s academic success. The choice often boils down to traditional private 1:1 tuition or innovative learning centres like NumberWorks’nWords.
NumberWorks’nWords provides English and maths tuition for students aged 5-16, aligning with school curricula while personalising learning to individual needs. They offer free assessments to identify gaps, creating tailored learning programs. This blend of computer-based and traditional methods supports students of all abilities, ensuring comprehensive academic support.
A standout feature of NumberWorks’nWords is its adaptive software, customising lessons in real-time to each student’s needs. This continuous adjustment ensures optimal learning, with immediate feedback allowing tutors to modify strategies promptly, keeping students on track.
Tutors at NumberWorks’nWords are trained to deliver education aligned with the national curriculum, ensuring consistent quality. This structured approach provides a clear roadmap for student progress, often more reliable than the results from private tutors. Additionally, tutors adapt their instruction to each child’s learning
“NumberWorks’nWords provides English and maths tuition for students aged 5-16, aligning with school curricula while personalising learning to individual needs”
style, making complex concepts understandable and fostering a positive attitude towards learning. This builds confidence, enhancing both academic performance and overall attitudes towards education.
Learning at NumberWorks’nWords is designed to be fun and engaging, using interactive tools and resources. Gamified elements make learning enjoyable and encourage peer interaction, creating a dynamic and social educational experience compared to the often solitary nature of private 1:1 tuition. Continuous monitoring and feedback ensure that students’ progress is meticulously tracked. The rewards system celebrates milestones, motivating students to excel through positive reinforcement.

How big is your garden? CAVEAT SUBSCRIPTOR
Most people have heard of Caveat emptor (let the buyer beware); but what about the seller?
In Bromley and Kent, homeowners often have the luxury of large gardens, sometimes with several backing onto each other. Have you had letters through the front door asking if you would be interested in selling part of your garden? Such letters are commonplace and may seem to be offering money for nothing. It is quite usual for property companies to try to secure parcels of land for development especially in popular areas such as Bromley and Orpington. They are often looking for an “option” rather than an outright sale and purchase. This allows a company to secure several parcels of land at a low initial price. They may then try to get planning permission or to sell on the bundle of options to a thirdparty developer.
“In Bromley and Kent, homeowners often have the luxury of large gardens, sometimes with several backing onto each other. Have you had letters through the front door asking if you would be interested in selling part of your garden?”
This process is not, of itself, questionable. What you need to be aware of is that the terms of any agreement are likely to be skewed in favour of the property company and without proper legal and valuation advice, you may find there are unexpected consequences from signing such an agreement. These can include being given relatively short notice before you have to move out of your family
home or finding that you cannot sell your property freely to a genuine buyer as the developer may have placed a restriction on your title. You may also find that a neighbour has achieved a better price than you have, whereas joining forces might have secured an even better price and a more coherent project. There are other ways such an agreement might go, including a mechanism for a price uplift on the grant of planning permission called “overage”. If you receive such a letter with an offer you wish to consider, we would strongly urge you to take legal and valuation advice. You may well find that a reputable developer is willing to pay for you to take proper advice. If they are not willing to do so, this may indicate that the company is not serious about the project. At CWJ we can advise individual homeowners or a consortium and can suggest names of local valuers who can assess the true value of the deal on the table.

House Of Hounds
New dog spa experience comes to Petts Wood
Like humans, dogs enjoy retail therapy and pampering. This was clear when watching an eager white schnauzer go up on his hind legs to sniff items on a counter in the recently opened House Of Hounds canine store and groomers in Petts Wood. Minutes later, he was in the arms of his daddy as instructions were made – short cut, not too much off the tail. Owner Natalie Bayram listened attentively. From then, it was onto one of the smart, black dog grooming tables and the careful attentions of Niamh, one of the House Of Hounds three canine personal stylists and groomers. The schnauzer looked happy as his coat was trimmed and blow dried, a process that took long enough for a bystander to drink a cup of coffee, courtesy of Natalie’s mum and shop colleague, Tish.
Since the House Of Hounds opened, a stream of dog mummies and daddies has flowed into the smart premises, to emerge, in the case of the dogs, often sleeker and smelling better than they went in (yes, House Of Hounds does use a shampoo that is highly effective against fox poo!). Meanwhile, owners can choose essentials and luxuries from the wide range of natural snacks, meals, harness, and accessories, and even sit themselves or their pets down in the social media snapshot chair or have a collar name disc engraved on the spot.
Owner Natalie told us, “I love dogs. I have three dachshunds and a pug. House Of Hounds bring together the best, most natural, and thoughtfully sourced products from around the world. Add an
unhurried grooming service, and our own parking out front, so owners can drop off and pick up their dogs easily, and we have created the perfect dog lovers experience. In human terms, we’re a spa! Yes, your dog can experience a mud bath or a facial, with us! We take care that both owners and even the most nervous of dogs have a great experience.
“House Of Hounds is a local hub for dog lovers. Give us a call on 01689 328000 or come and say ‘hello’. And yes, we have a dish of free treats on the counter ready for your dog, too.”
House of Hounds is open Monday – Saturday, 9.30-5pm.

Naomi Campbell’s stylish life in layers as she celebrates 40 years in fashion at the V&A
Ahead of the V&A opening its multifaceted exhibition, NAOMI – we uncover the model’s most iconic layered looks. By
Lara Owen
The V&A is launching a new exhibition that explore the life and career of supermodel Naomi Campbell.
With a selection of her archival pieces, the exhibit, NAOMI, goes beyond fashion, diving deeper into Campbell’s layered career, activism and cultural reach.
Open to the public from June 22, it provokes impressive, sensitive and evocative stages of
Campbell’s life.
To celebrate, here are some of those moments embodied in iconic outfits, peeling back the layers of her life in looks.
VIVIENNE WESTWOOD TARTAN SUIT
Meeting on a Los Angeles photoshoot in 1992, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss were among the founders of the Nineties supermodels. Campbell’s outfit pictured at the end of London Fashion Week perfectly encapsulated how many layers there were to come of the young model.
Against Moss’ fairly reserved monochromatic look, Campbell’s overlapping tartan suit paired with ultramarine accessories and a hot pink feather boa were emblematic of the 23-year-old’s rebellious and carefree spirit.
NEWSPAPER AND DOLLAR BILLS DRESS
From then on, there was no stripping back for Campbell. The following year she modelled a
wedding dress made entirely of newspapers and dollar bills at the Harvey Nichols and Perrier New Generation Designers Show.
Perhaps the perfect choice for the rising star who was making leaps and bounds in her career whilst having a tumultuous relationship with the press. The abundance of ruffled newspapers were symbolic of how the mainstream press disguised what the model felt was the real Naomi.
HAIR FLICK AND FRINGE
Alongside copious clothes – wigs and extensions have been a part of Campbell’s canon throughout her career. Routinely shifting her image required flexibility; thus layering extensions over wigs and intense styling contributed to bald patches.
Telling the Evening Standard in 2017, “I lost a lot of [my hair] with extensions,” she revealed, “I am more careful and do things differently.” Campbell dismissed the idea of black hair as a political issue, noting that “everybody in the world wears wigs… I do whatever the job calls for”. Campbell’s persevering attitude unveiled a deep insight into the model’s ambition.
FRILLS AND RUFFLES
Layering doesn’t mean covering up. In 2004, Naomi sported a sheer tiered mini dress at the Louis Vuitton party for the brand’s fall/winter collection. The bohemian ruffles and natural hair evoked a more laid-back countenance in Campbell. The neutral colour palette, eclectic accessories and sheer bodice foreshadow some of the model’s relaxed future looks.
DECONSTRUCTING HER IMAGE
The year 2017 saw Campbell taking a more structured and straightforward approach. Angularly layering suit trousers, skirts and formal lapels, this look symbolises Campbell’s ability to do it all. Integrating bold accessories in the form of fishnet tights and a bejewelled nose ring epitomised Campbell’s chameleon-like character. Whilst the layering seemed disjointed, she held it all together with her poised persona.
REMEMBERING HER ROOTS
Whilst mainly sporting simple silhouettes and muted hues, Campbell reminded the world that she is never predictable at the 2019 MET Gala. The model harked back to her feather boa frolics with
this pale pink Valentino gown – a piece featured in the coming exhibition.
Themed ‘Camp’ Campbell imbued the freedom to be oneself and bearing all through this sheerly layered look. Offering strength in the form of a bold feathered cape and fragility through lace tights, Campbell’s look was unapologetically authentic, revealing her true disposition.
SLEEK AND SIMPLE WITH DOLCE AND GABBANA
As Campbell enters her fifth decade, the model is leaning into bearing all. When walking for Dolce Gabbana FW 2024 show, she once again sported an all black outfit which experimented with textures and opacity through its use of lace, silk and mesh.
Using the most delicate of fabrics, this look evoked a vulnerability in Campbell, as the mourning veil almost disguised her face of true emotion. It seems the supermodel has become more comfortable in simple silhouettes and monochrome palettes, as she continues to reveal more of herself, whilst always leaving a protective facade: in this case, one of a mesh veil.

Summer make-up trends you’ll want to try
With summer round the corner, freshen up your usual beauty routine with these new makeup trends, which are set to be popular this season. Celebrities are already hitting the red carpets with on-trend rosy doll cheeks and bold neon eyeliner, and beauty experts are on hand to show us how we can give the new looks a go at home.
Here are the summer make-up trends you’ll want to try for yourself…
BOLD NEON EYES
The top trend for this summer is neon, so don’t be afraid to go bold with your looks using neon eyeliner and eyeshadows. They are the look to go for this season, says Rachael Divers, resident makeup artist at Face The Future. She suggests using brightly coloured eyeliners or eyeshadows to create a striking winged liner or a bold wash of colour on the lids.
WET LOOK
Beauty lovers are opting for a fresh, dewy aesthetic and ‘glass’ or ‘wet’ skin is everywhere in summer
From bold neon eyes to sun-kissed skin, these are the beauty trends to look out for. By
Rikki Loftus
2024, says beauty expert Hayley Walker, a make-up artist for Justmylook. “This look can be achieved using cream, liquid and glossy formulas that create a dewy glow. To heighten the look, moisturise and hydrate during your skincare routine before applying make-up to achieve a smooth canvas,” she says. “A hydrating mask or hyaluronic acid creams work perfectly for this. As part of your make-up routine to achieve a wet-skin look, opt for a serum, lightweight foundation that provides a moisture boost and a smooth, natural-looking finish. A liquid highlighter is useful here as it enhances a dewy, luminous finish.” The look aims to create a glowing, luminous complexion, leaving you with a wet, glass appearance.
SUN-KISSED
The minimal make-up sun-kissed look is a musttry for the summer, with many opting for a natural,
bronzed finish. Moisturising and applying SPF are essential to create a soft, fresh-faced look and Walker advises to opt for a lightweight serum foundation to ensure a natural-looking base, avoiding full-coverage, matte-based products. “Tinted moisturisers work well for this look for a minimal, bronzed finish. Apply cream blusher to enhance the natural, no-makeup appearance, imitating sun-kissed cheeks. Opt for gloss or lip balm instead of lipstick here and finish the look with a hydrating setting spray.”
SMOKEY EYES
Grunge is back for the summer and you can make a statement with a bold look by adding dark eyeshadow into your make-up routine. Divers shares that “lived-in liner” is gaining popularity, with smudged and smokey eyeliner looks adding an effortless edge to any make-up style. Walker
tells us how to get the aesthetic by carefully blending dark eyeshadow from the outer corner of your eyes into the crease. “Blend this well to your preferred intensity; remember to be bold with this look. Next, apply an eyeliner, which can be liquid or pencil. Start from the outer corners of your eye and work your way inward. This will enhance the look, deepening the smokey effect. Finish the look with mascara.”
DOLL BLUSH
Doll-like rosy pink cheeks are trending this summer and Walker shares how you can achieve the look. “You can perfect this look using cream or matte blush, however, I recommend opting for a cream-based blush to create a smooth, fresh-faced finish. Apply a light layer of pink, rosy blush onto the apples of your cheeks to bring colour to your face. Enhance the look with a highlighter for a subtle shine effect.”

Does my hair need SPF?
How to protect your locks in the
From dryness and colour-fade to scorched scalps, our hair shouldn’t be forgotten when it comes to taking care in the sun. By
Abi Jackson
We all know slathering on SPF is essential for protecting our skin in the sun, but does our hair need SPF too?
Technically speaking, not in the exact same way. In sun creams and lotions, SPF – which stands for ‘sun protection factor’ – relates to how much protection the formula offers skin against UVB rays (the type mainly associated with sunburn and a raised risk of skin cancer, while UVA rays are more associated with ageing).
These risks don’t apply with hair. However, our scalps do certainly need protecting from sunburn, which is where SPF can be very important. Also, the sun can leave our locks seriously frazzled and worse for wear, so protecting it will help it stay looking and feeling its best. Here’s what you need to know…
BURN-FREE SCALPS
Many of us have learned the hard way that it’s all too easy to scorch your scalp on a sunny day. “Any exposed area of skin is vulnerable to the sun’s rays. Whether you are wearing your hair in plaits and your parting is prevalent, or you have areas of thinning hair, you should be applying sun cream
“The sun can leave our locks seriously frazzled and worse for wear, so protecting it will help it stay looking and feeling its best”
sun
to these exposed spots,” says Laura Elliott, head stylist at haircare specialists Neal & Wolf.
“Ideally, you want to be choosing an SPF50 product and reapply every two hours. For precise and mess-free application, squeeze a pea-sized blob onto your finger, rub together as you would with any other haircare product and gently massage into the scalp.”
Concerned about greasiness? Elliott suggests: “Spray sun creams are much finer and less heavy than typical cream products, which can be thick and appear oily on the hair, especially after reapplying throughout the day.
“I recommend a mineral powder sun cream if oily hair is a concern. This can be applied easily with the product’s built-in powder brush, absorbing excess oils and leaving a matte finish. However, as many mineral powder sun protectants only go as high as SPF30, it’s important to be more vigilant with reapplication.”
Also, hats “should be non-negotiable”, particularly on sunny days and in any long stretches in the sun.
DAMAGED AND DRY LOCKS
Suzie McGill, artistic director at Rainbow Room International and current British Hairdressing Awards colour technician of the year, says: “With too much sun exposure our hair can become dry, brittle and damaged. The sun weakens the hair
structure. It also strips the hair of its natural oils, which results in it feeling and looking rougher in texture.”
Colour fade is another concern when it comes to hair and sun exposure. McGill adds: “Prolonged sun exposure can result in hair colour fading and not being as long-lasting. For those with blonde/ lightened hair, including highlights, the sun can bleach out the melanin in the hair, which can result in the hair going lighter. Although you may think this is a good thing if you are looking to lighten your hair, this will affect the appearance of your hair, leaving it drier and more damaged.”
SUN-SAVVY PRODUCTS
“It’s so important to use colour-saving products, such as colour-saving shampoos, conditioners and masks to help hair colour look its best and avoid it fading,” says McGill. “The Schwarzkopf Professional Bonacure Color Freeze [available from Sephora starting from £13.70 each] range is great and includes a shampoo, conditioner and treatment to prolong the life of your hair colour.
“Using UV/heat protection products is also essential to create a protective barrier and keep hair in the best condition possible when exposed to the sun. One of my favourite products is the Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS Super Shield
which also helps tackle frizz, which is common following sun exposure, heat and humidity.”
Elliott adds: “Look for styling products with built-in UV protection, such as colour-hold products, hair oils, or volumising mousses. These will not only give that extra bit of sun protection, but also maintain perfect-looking hair. A heat protectant can help to prevent dryness after extended sun exposure.
“Heat protectants, such as the Neäl & Wølf Guard Heat Protection, can protect the hair from temperatures of up to 220-degrees Celsius. This will help the hair to lock in moisture and remain soft, smooth and glossy. Spray directly onto hair from root to tip after every wash and brush through to spread the product evenly.”
“Heat protectants, such as the Neäl & Wølf Guard Heat Protection, can protect the hair from temperatures of up to 220-degrees Celsius”
SOOTHE AND REPAIR
Elliott says: “If your scalp does end up sun damaged, try taking a cool shower, avoiding products that can irritate the scalp and using soothing treatments, such as aloe vera. Hot water will further irritate the burnt area, whilst cold water will help to soothe. Aloe vera gel can also hydrate and help heal the burn without creating additional oils.
“If your scalp has badly burnt, be prepared for peeling,” she adds. “This isn’t to be confused with dandruff and can be helped by applying hydrating and moisturising scalp care.”
And if your hair does end up a bit worse for wear after a heatwave or sunshine getaway? “The main aim is to retain as much moisture in the hair as possible and keep it nourished and hydrated. Therefore, hair masks/treatments are a must, alongside other great haircare products such as oils and creams that will give hair an extra dose of hydration,” says McGill.
“As the sun has already done damage to your hair, trying to avoid using heated styling tools where possible is also beneficial, to avoid any further damage. Instead, experiment with hairstyles such as low buns, ponytails and natural waves to give your hair a break.”
The importance of good hydration as we age
As the warmer weeks set in, we reflect on the importance of keeping hydrated at any age, and in particular as we grow older.
We’ve all been there: suddenly our mouth is dry and we can’t remember when we last had a sip of water.
While it’s easy to ignore our fluid intake, dehydration is associated with issues including reduced mental performance, fatigue and constipation. At its most severe, it increases the chances of hospitalisation and even mortality.
On the flipside, the benefits of good hydration are many and broad. It improves well-being and, in some instances, it may help us reduce medication and even prevent illness.
How to avoid dehydration
Because of physiological changes in the ageing process and certain conditions more prevalent as
we age, older people can be more vulnerable to dehydration. This summer, we encourage you to:
• Watch out for the signs – including dryness of the mouth, lips and tongue. Urine is also a giveaway – strong colour and smell can mean more fluid is needed. As we age, it’s common to reduce drinking in the hopes of avoiding needing to go to the toilet, however restricting overall fluid intake does not reduce the frequency or severity of urinary incontinence.
• Think beyond water – adding a slice of lemon or fresh strawberries can make water more appealing and, if appropriate, consider squash, milkshakes or iced tea; and load up on fruit and veg like watermelon and cucumber.
• Create routines – for example, keep a jug of fresh water or squash next to you while watching your favourite TV show, and use the commercial breaks to remind you it’s time for a refill.
Having supported hundreds of families, I know that recognising when an older loved one is not drinking enough, and helping them to drink more can be a challenge, but paying closer attention is always a good start.

HOUSE & GARDEN
– Keep it local for everything house and home –
A Symphony of Colours & Textures
Born amidst the verdant blooms of midsummer, July embodies the essence of growth and vitality in the garden.
From its early days, it nurtures seeds in the warmth of long sunlit hours, coaxing tender shoots to emerge from fertile soil. As July matures, it becomes a symphony of colours and textures, with blossoms unfolding like promises fulfilled.
Rooted in the earth yet reaching towards the sky, July thrives in the delicate balance of sunlight and rain, its days marked by the rhythmic dance of pollinators and the gentle sway of leaves in the breeze. In the garden, July is a time of abundance and wonder where every leaf, petal, and stem tells a story of resilience and adaptation.
Through the hands of us gardeners, July becomes a canvas of creativity and care. Whether in a sprawling landscape or a humble windowbox, July invites us to cultivate not just plants, but a deeper connection to the natural world and the cycles that sustain it.
As the sun arcs high overhead, July remains a beacon of growth and transformation, a testament to the enduring beauty and vitality of the horticultural journey. Here at the community cornerstone, which is Coblands Garden Centre, the love of nature thrives and relationships grow as robustly as our plants. As the summer sun shines brightly upon us, we reflect on our journey, our values, and the profound joy that comes from nurturing our gardens and our community.
Our Heritage and Commitment
Our legacy is deeply rooted in an unwavering dedication to quality and excellence. Over the years, we have not only curated a diverse selection of plants but also forged profound connections with local gardeners, businesses, and plant enthusiasts. Our steadfast commitment to sourcing the finest plants from esteemed UK growers, our own nurseries, and trusted partners in Italy and the Netherlands ensures that our community has access to a rich variety of perennials, shrubs, trees, specimen plants, and more. Each plant we offer is a testament to our passion for nature and our dedication to superior quality, ensuring that every garden, regardless of size, can thrive.
“The vibrant, verdant surroundings of our garden centre create an unparalleled workplace ambiance that we cherish every moment”
A Garden Centre Run by Gardeners
At Coblands, we are a team of true horticultural aficionados, fervently devoted to our craft. Regardless of the season, come rain or shine, our team is imbued with an infectious energy and enthusiasm. Our love for what we do is palpable, and it’s this passion that fuels our daily commitment to our work. The vibrant, verdant surroundings of our garden centre create an unparalleled workplace ambiance that we cherish every moment.
We take immense pride in the strong relationships we have cultivated with local gardeners, businesses, and plant lovers. Our team not only recognizes and welcomes our regular patrons but also relishes engaging with new visitors. We are not merely here for business; we are here to share our passion and ensure that everyone can fully embrace and enhance their gardening experiences.
July In The Garden
As the sun climbs high in the sky and the days stretch long into warm evenings, July invites us to bask in the abundance of our gardens. It’s a month when diligent care and thoughtful attention yield vibrant blooms and lush foliage. Here’s a curated list of essential tasks to ensure your garden thrives during peak summer.
Continuous Blooms: To maintain a continuous display of flowers, regular deadheading of bedding plants and repeat-flowering perennials is essential. This simple practice encourages new blooms to flourish, enhancing the beauty of beds, borders, and containers alike.
Vegetable Garden Insights: For tomatoes, continue picking ripe fruits and remove sideshoots on cotton varieties to maximize fruit production. Greenhouse growers should ventilate well and damp down the floor to regulate temperature and humidity.
Flower Care and Maintenance: Revitalize tiredlooking plants with a trim followed by a nutrientrich feed to stimulate fresh growth and blooms.
Divide and Conquer: Revitalize your irises by dividing overcrowded clumps. Discard tired rhizomes and replant healthy sections to ensure robust growth and abundant blooms in future seasons.
July is not just a month of care; it’s a celebration of the rewards reaped from diligent gardening efforts. Embrace the warmth, cherish the blossoms, and savour the joys of nurturing your outdoor oasis during this glorious season of growth.
“We are not merely here for business; we are here to share our passion and ensure that everyone can fully embrace and enhance their gardening experiences”

5 OF THE BEST at Three days of design
It’s that time when the eyes of furniture fans around the world swivel north, as annual Danish design spectacular 3daysofdesign showcases the best and freshest interior ideas coming out of the Scandi nations and beyond. With renowned luxury behemoths sharing the spotlight with emerging talents, it’s where every Nordic name worth knowing gathers.
For its 11th year, the festival is bigger and bolder than ever. Enveloping Copenhagen’s shops, studios, streets and show spaces with refined and forward-thinking furniture as well as lighting, accessories, new materials and limited edition pieces in increasingly awe-inspiring exhibitions, it ignites a city-wide celebration of extraordinary design across 11 districts.
RFH COLLECTION - &TRADITION
A partnership between &Tradition and the Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation has led to the return of the RFH furniture series, five distinctive designs created for The Festival of Britain at London’s Royal Festival Hall in 1951 as part of Day’s first major furniture commission.
While the designs have been sitting pretty in the concert hall, foyers and public spaces of the iconic cultural venue for over 70 years, this is the first time some pieces are available to purchase, while others haven’t been available for decades.
ANAGRAM SOFA - VITRA
Based on the premise that everyday living has evolved past being focused on – and positioned around – the television and now needs to cater to an increasing array of activities, the Anagram Sofa by Swiss design studio Panter&Tourron was born. Created for its layout to be reinvented time and time again, this is a seating system deeply imbued with adaptability.
An ‘assortment of possibilities’ rather that a static object, Anagram is made up of a handful of modules and elements that can quickly and easily respond to daily needs, or lifestyles changes: from an exercise regime, sports final or cocktail hour to a house move or family resize. Oh, it’s ready for anything.
MONOLIT CHAIR - FRITZ HANSEN
Aesthetically in line with its namesake impressive stone structure, the characterful Monolit chair by Danish designer Cecilie Manz is composed of a wrap-around back rest shell which forms a protective and embracing wall around the sitter. Its sculptural and slender profile raises majestically from the floor, creating individual capsules of personal space that are both flexible and come-and-curlup-here comfortable. Small design elements highlight its refined status, such as the linear piping around the seat
“The characterful Monolit chair by Danish designer Cecilie Manz is composed of a wrap-around back rest shell”
which has a sharp, haute-couture feel in either full grain leather or coordinating with the upholstery, as well as the option for a contrasting inner colour (the outside remains mono-toned to emphasise its statuesque silhouette) and the hardy, horseshoeshaped metal foot.
EAVE SEAMELINE SOFA - AUDO COPENHAGEN
Winding and meandering into the contemporary home of tomorrow is the Eave Seamline sectional sofa; a wave of alluring upholstered contours characterised by curves, clean lines and customisation.
Composed of architecturally-inspired concave and convex forms, it’s made up of nine pieces –from corner modules to chaise longue segments and open sections – that are waiting to be neatly fitted together and playfully slide and curl their way around a room, reacting to its specific shape and needs.
SETTLE OUTDOOR COLLECTIONMUUTO
No matter where you are, come rain or shine – nestle into Settle, the latest result of Muuto’s collaboration with Norwegian design duo Anderssen & Voll. Erasing the boundary between indoor and out, the upholstered all-weather seating range – which includes a cosy lounge chair, a neat two-seater and a generous three-seater – brings the softness and comfort of the living room into the fresh air, and the lightness and sense of freedom imbued into outdoor furniture inside.
“Today, many of us live in a way that blurs the lines between interior and exterior. These spaces support each other. You can see that in design, as the distinction between indoor and outdoor furniture becomes less clear. We bring the comfort of indoors out with us. So, we designed a sofa and lounge chair for spending the best of times outdoors,” says Espen Voll. chaplins.co.uk

What they don’t tell you on TV
Have you seen the TV shows DIY SOS or 60 Minute Makeover? In just days or even minutes, a property is partially or completely transformed.
However, real life is different, and few people have the resources of a TV company. Also, what happens after the cameras leave? Was everything as good as it seemed?
We asked Tony Cheeseman, Founder and Director of IQ Property Services, who act for clients through the whole process of designing and building homes, what a renovation or new build project should be like in real life.
Tony said, “We have been helping people to enjoy realising their dreams for over 25 years. We start by identifying your wishes. How do you want to live in the house? How many of you will live there? What are your entertainment needs and desired spaces? Vision in place, the design can begin, incorporating your preferred architectural style and needs like efficient heating systems or garden irrigation.
“Next, we identify the professionals required for the design, such as architects, structural engineers, and interior designers. Interviewing these professionals is crucial to ensure we work well together for you.
“With the design team in place, work can start on drawings and specifications. We prefer a 3D model for better visualization. The design and specification stage typically takes at least three months before the tender process begins.
“We will interview several contractors. A Quantity Surveyor (QS) helps to prepare detailed tender documents, ensuring all contractors price the same scope of work.
“We
have been helping people to enjoy realising their dreams for over 25 years. We start by identifying your wishes. How do you want to live in the house? How many of you will live there? ”
“We work with you to select the best contractors. Once the contractors are appointed, we sort out all the necessary paperwork and insurance.
“During construction, we monitor progress closely, ensuring contractors are only paid for completed work. A retention clause holds back a percentage of payments against defective work. Proper project monitoring helps manage changes and keeps the project on track.
“At project completion, snagging and commissioning ensure all work is satisfactory. Practical completion releases half of the retention money, with the remaining half held for 12 months to cover any defects. After 12 months, a final inspection is conducted before releasing the remaining retention money.”
Tony and IQ Property Services can take your wishes and turn them into reality, smoothly and efficiently.
