One sunny day in the middle of all this, Miles suddenly suffered a brain seizure. This led to the discovery of a tumour the size of a cherry tomato. A Nurturing Environment
At Bishop Challoner School, our Nursery is a nurturing environment where young children embark on a seamless educational journey, ensuring they transition into Reception Class with confidence and ease. Our school motto, “Quantum Potes Tantum Aude,” challenges every member of our community to dare to do their very best, an ethos that begins in our Nursery.
The aims and mission of Bishop Challoner School are encapsulated in our commitment to developing each child’s unique talents through a broad education rooted in faith. Our mission statement, “To Live, Love and Learn like Christ,” guides us in helping each child fulfill their true potential in an ever-changing world. This Catholic ethos is the cornerstone of our Nursery, fostering a supportive environment where respect, tolerance, fairness, and generosity are paramount.
In our Nursery, we adhere to the principles outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework. This statutory guidance emphasises the importance of recognizing each child as a unique learner, fostering positive relationships to build independence, creating enabling environments to support development, and focusing on key areas of learning and development.
A distinctive feature of our Nursery is the Forest School program. This holistic, child-led approach complements the main curriculum by integrating literacy, science, mathematics, and the arts through play and exploration. It places a strong emphasis on building self-esteem and independence, crucial for the development of our students.
We understand the needs of busy families, which is why we offer comprehensive wrap-around care. Our Breakfast Club starts at 07:15 am, and our afterschool Creche runs until 6 pm, providing flexible options for parents while ensuring children are cared for in a familiar and nurturing environment.
Our Outdoor Learning Area is a highlight of the Nursery, equipped with a ship climbing frame, permanent sand pit, sand and water table, playhouse, and mud kitchen. This space, designed with safety in mind, allows children to engage in learning and play year-round, supporting their physical and social development.
Preparing children for their transition to Reception Class is a priority at Bishop Challoner Nursery. Our focus on school readiness includes not just academic preparation, but also the development of independence and social skills, ensuring our children are well-rounded and ready for the next step in their educational journey.

A time of excitement, discovery and preparation
Babington House School set up their Sixth form ten years ago, and within three years became the top small independent school for A Levels in the country.
Providing academic success within a supportive environment
Babington House is a warm, caring community with high focus on academic success and inspiring a love of learning. Sixth Form students enjoy studying a wide range of subjects including mathematics, economics, science, languages and the arts. It is this what makes the Sixth Form so unique, and pupils thrive from being a part of this supportive and friendly community.
Small… but mighty!
Being a small Sixth Form has a HUGE advantage. Pupils benefit from small teaching groups enabling lessons to be tailored to individual needs, drawing out their talents and finding their strengths. The culture of achievement and embedded pastoral care drives happy, hard-working students and A level results that outperform the Grammar and Independent schools in the area year in, year out.
Progressing to University and beyond
Expert advice and careers guidance is firmly on the agenda for Sixth Form students as well as a number of leadership opportunities formed from being a key part of this all-through school community. It is this balance of support and aspiration that provides a solid foundation for Babington’s Sixth Form pupils enabling them to be well prepared to step out into the world with confidence, determination and the courage to realise their dreams.
“I can honestly say that Babington has been the best experience of my life. The staff and pupils are equally as friendly and willing to help. I know that once I leave Babington (after 13 years!) I will be a well-rounded individual. The level of education at Babington is second to none, and I am sure that the skills I’ve developed will be called upon all through my life”. – Florence, former English, Maths and German A level student.

Join The Festival Theatre at Hever Castle for an extraordinary season of culture, history, and music!
On Saturday, 25th May, the Festival Theatre at Hever Castle commenced its season with the unveiling of a brand-new theatre structure on the picturesque Two Sisters’ Lawn.
This new open-air theatre was constructed following severe storm damage in July 2023. The upgraded theatre features several enhancements, including a continuous roof that ensures every seat is now under cover, providing an uninterrupted viewing experience regardless of the weather and a unique and immersive atmosphere for all attendees.
Running from May to September the season promises the most extensive and diverse programme in the theatre’s history. Alongside returning festival favourites, many new artists and events have been added.
In collaboration with the Castle’s curatorial team and Historian Dr. Owen Emmerson, the theatre will host its first deep-dive into Tudor history with four days of dedicated events and Live on the Loggia local DJ Marcel Mendez will be playing the tunes from Ibiza’s Summer of Love for the festival’s first Silent Disco.
The music of legendary artists is celebrated with a series of tribute acts from classic rock to contemporary pop such as The Taylor Swift Show, The Simon and Garfunkel Story, The Beatles for Sale and direct from London’s West End Whitney Queen of the Night. These performances will pay homage to some of the most influential musicians of our time.
Renowned for its vibrant jazz scene, Ronnie Scott’s Club brings its iconic sound to the festival. Expect mesmerizing performances from some of the best jazz musicians in the world including The Soul Family featuring Natalie Wiliams. Classical music lovers can enjoy Mozart’s The Magic Flute from Wild Arts Opera Company and no festival would be complete without The Last Night of the Hever Proms.
The festival caters to all ages with a range of familyfriendly activities. From classic tales Peter Pan and The Horrible Histories to wonderful puppetry in Out of the Hat and Top Secret’s Magic of Science.
The Festival Theatre returns to Chiddingstone Castle with The Wind in the Willows and the Circus of Curiosities which includes many activities including the chance to take part in a circus skills workshop and explore the castle’s very own curiosities.
The stage will light up with laughter for a series of comedy plays this year beginning with P.G Wodehouse’s uproarious adventure with Jeeves & Wooster, followed by Blackadder, based on the iconic British television series. Fans of the sharpwitted and hilariously cynical Edmund Blackadder will not want to miss this hilarious adaptation and returning for their fourth season The Duke’s Theatre Company perform Shakespeare’s most famous and quotable comedy As You Like It.
It’s going to be a glorious summer pack up your picnic and join us. To see the full programme of events visit heverfestival.co.uk

FISH UNION
Butterflied Mackerel with Roasted Endive, Samphire & Rhubarb Chutney
We love the rich, tart flavour of rhubarb and this is the season to enjoy it. Paired with delicious, fresh mackerel, this light dish is bursting with flavour, perfect for Summer.
Ingredients: Serves 4
Prep time: ?? minutes
Cook time: ?? minutes
• 4 butterflied mackerel (available from Fish Union)
• 2 heads white endive (or 4 if no red endive available)
• 2 heads red endive
• 1 pot of samphire (available from Fish Union)
For the chutney:
• 1 kilo rhubarb cut to 1cm cubes
• 1 medium onion, finely chopped
• 50 gr ginger, peeled and grated
• 400 gr sugar
• 250 mls red wine vinegar
• 150 mls balsamic vinegar
• 1 tablespoon curry powder
• 1 tablespoon mixed spice
Method
For the chutney:
“At Fish Union, we love the rich, tart flavour of rhubarb and this is the season to enjoy it”
1. Mix the vinegars and add half to a thick bottomed saucepan on a medium heat.
2. Add the onion and rhubarb and cook until soft.
3. Add the sugar, spices, ginger and the rest of the vinegar and cook down until a jammy consistency. Place in sterilised jam jars until needed.
4. Tip - any excess chutney will last for three months and pairs excellently with a cheese board… that’s dessert sorted!
For the dish:
1. Pat the mackerel skin dry with a sheet of kitchen towel and lightly season.
2. Cut the endive into eight pieces if large heads (four pieces if small heads).
3. Lightly oil a non-stick frying pan and lightly sear the endive achieving a light caramelisation. Keep warm on a warmed plate.
4. In the same pan place the seasoned mackerel, skin side down. If the fish curls up, prevent this by placing a small plate on top to weigh it down.
5. Cook for 4-5 minutes, remove the plate and flip the mackerel over. Remove the pan from the heat allowing the residual heat to finish cooking the fish.
6. Plate the endive, sprinkle over the samphire and top with the mackerel, finally add a teaspoon of the chutney to the plate, drizzling a small amount of chutney juice around the plate.

Enhancing Ightham Mote
A Blend of History and Modern Conservation
In the tranquil countryside of Kent, a historic gem is undergoing a transformation. Ightham Mote, with its rich history, is not only preserving its past but also embracing a sustainable future through its innovative infrastructure project and an engaging summer season of programming.
Unlocking the future at Ightham Mote
Beginning with the relocation of parking spaces, the project has progressed swiftly, now focusing on construction of a sustainable Visitor Reception and Shop building. One of the pivotal steps in this endeavour was the removal of cars from the historic Walled Garden, clearing the path for its future reinstatement.
Moreover, efforts to enrich the landscape include the planting of 700 new trees, with more in the pipeline. This initiative not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also contributes to the ecological balance of the area. Visitors are invited to participate in this noble endeavour by sponsoring a tree, fostering a sense of community stewardship.
Tudor Spies, Plots and Uprisings: A Summer of Selby Spies
Amidst the hustle of construction, Ightham Mote unveils its summer season of Selby Spies. Step into the shoes of Tudor spymasters, delving into the intrigues of Elizabeth I’s court and delve into the illustrious history of the Selby family, who played a pivotal role in the property’s legacy. This summer of Selby Spies offers interactive experiences for families, with activities ranging from code-breaking challenges to a themed outdoor trail.
Talks and reenactments to take place on:
• 22nd – 24th August - Royal Intrigues Unveiled: Tudor Power Plays from Elizabeth I to Edward VI
• 29th – 31st August - Forging Tudor Legacies: Rebellion, Pretenders, and Tournament Triumphs
In the midst of construction and transformation, Ightham Mote remains a beacon of resilience, embracing the past while forging ahead towards a sustainable future. With each brick laid and each tree planted, it reaffirms its commitment to preserving heritage and nurturing nature for generations to come.

Prenup Season
Summer is wedding season so for family lawyers, it is also prenup season. In this article we touch on the key prenup facts to assist couples.
Prenups are legal contracts that provide a framework for how assets should be divided if a married couple decides to divorce later down the line.
Whilst prenups were previously considered only for more wealthy individuals, they have since become relatively common amongst people from all kinds of backgrounds who want to provide themselves with a form of financial protection before taking their first step into married life.
A prenup is a legal contract that clearly outlines how assets, property, debts and other financial assets should be divided in the event of a divorce or a dissolution of a civil partnership. It is important to note that whilst prenups are not currently legally binding in the UK, the court may consider them during divorce proceedings if there are any disagreements.
Prenups often cover various financial matters such as the division of assets acquired before and during the marriage, how inheritance and gifts should be treated, spousal maintenance arrangements and financial responsibilities during the course of the marriage.
An experienced family solicitor will ensure you are fully informed of your rights and obligations concerning the prenup and will help to amicably negotiate reasonable terms with your partner and their legal representation.
During prenup proceedings, both partners are required to provide full disclosure of their assets, financial commitments, and income. Following this, they will then negotiate and agree upon the terms of the prenup, with the assistance of their family lawyers.
Once agreed, we highly recommend signing a prenup at least 28 days in advance of any wedding or civil partnership ceremony in order to avoid any potential claims of coercion.
The cost of a prenup in the UK depends on the assets involved. If either spouse has significant assets, debts or wealth, the drafting process may be more complex, increasing the overall cost.
If you would like to speak to a member of our Family team about a prenup, please contact 01689 887887 or email cwj@cwj.co.uk www.cwj.co.uk

BUYING A NEW HOME
Not understanding the conveyancing process is putting around 2.2 million potential owners off buying a home.*
Here Thomas Dunton’s conveyancing solicitor, Aylin Osman, clarifies the key points to be aware of when buying a home.
What is conveyancing?
The process of legally transferring a property from one owner to another.
What are searches and surveys?
Searches are carried out (by your lawyer) to find issues such as contamination, flooding and planning constraints.
Surveys identify matters such as structural issues, damp and woodworm. You will likely want any problems resolved before you buy and/or that the price is reduced to reflect this.
What is “exchange of contracts”?
Until you exchange contracts, you or the seller can change your mind about buying/selling the property. When contracts are exchanged, both parties sign them, the deposit is paid, and a completion date is agreed. Once exchanged, you are legally contracted to complete the transaction on the agreed date.
What is “completion”?
Completion usually takes place some two weeks or so after exchange, and is the day you can move into your new home. On completion, the balance of the
purchase price and any other fees are paid, and the property is registered at the Land Registry. Should I use a solicitor when buying a home?
Due to the number of legal issues, it is risky to try to do so without the help of a qualified and experienced conveyancer. Above all, it helps reduce the likelihood and disappointment of delays that could cause the sale to fall through.
What costs are associated with conveyancing?
As well as solicitors’ costs, you should budget for:
• Stamp duty, searches and Land Registry fees
• Removal costs, survey fees
• Landlord’s agent’s fees (when buying/selling a leasehold property)
Be sure to check the small print of any conveyancing quote you receive, and clarify all of the costs you are liable to pay before you commit.
Why Thomas Dunton?
We ensure you fully understand the process, keep you up to date with the progress, and help resolve any legal issues that may arise before, during, and after your purchase. This, we feel, goes a long way in relieving a lot of the stress associated with buying a new home.
For further advice, with no obligation, call 01689 822554 or email conveyancing@thomasdunton.co.uk

MODERN FLORALS TREND
Flowery prints don’t have to be predictable.
By Amelia Yeomans
There’s a reason why the fashion set can’t resist bringing out the timeless print during the warmer months. Adding an appropriate dose of colour and interest to any look, there are countless ways to wear florals to make them modern and trendy.
CO-ORDS
Although florals are harder to style than more neutral prints such as stripes or polka dots, the beauty of a flowery print is that it can totally elevate your look in one simple yet timeless step.
Step out of your comfort zone and embrace the modern floral trend with one of these simple yet stylish outfit formulas that will serve you well all through the season.
Co-ords will look chic no matter what print or style you’re wearing, but they work especially well with florals. Rather than a predictable maxi dress for the summer, a co-ord gives a similar feel but with much more edge. Embrace the Gucci-esque style with a statement floral suit, or shop for some floaty trousers and a matching oversized blouse to look and feel cool in the warmer weather. Finish off the look with some neutral or plain accessories, like some black boots and a minimalist handbag, to let the print do the talking and to avoid making your outfit appear too busy.
CLASHING
One of the best ways to make florals look more modern and trendy is by clashing them. This is not a trend for the fainthearted, but when done right, it looks impossibly cool. Simply opt for two different floral prints in your top and bottoms and pair them together for a head-turning ensemble. To make the look feel intentional rather than just thrown together, ensure there are common colours between both items to create a sense of harmony throughout your outfit.
STATEMENT TROUSERS
If you’re new to the florals trend, one of the least intimidating ways to start off is with one statement
item, like trousers. Pairing bright floral trousers with a more minimalist top makes the trend wearable for everyday without being at all boring. If you usually wear jeans day-to-day, look for a blue floral pattern in a similar hue to your favourite denim to ease yourself in. This way, you can also be sure that your statement trousers of choice will fit in with the rest of your capsule wardrobe. Stick to the silhouette of trousers that makes you feel most comfortable and shop for a statement floral style in the same shape. This will help you to look and feel your best when embracing the floral trend.
SWIMWEAR
If you’re still reluctant to add florals into your everyday wardrobe, consider how floral swimwear can liven up your holiday outfit rotation. Less intimidating than investing in a full floral get-up, a floral swimming costume allows you to try out the trend in a subtler manner. Not only will it make a nice change from plain block-coloured swimwear, but floral prints will look even better in the summer sun. There are countless floral bikinis and swimming costumes available on the high street, so this is a way to experiment with the trend without breaking the bank.

FESTIVAL GUT HEALTH – TIPS FOR KEEPING GUT TROUBLES AT BAY
June is now well-known as the start of festival season here in the UK and this once-maligned activity is now enjoyed by vast numbers of people and includes events that vary from Glastonbury and major music festivals to local farm, family and even cheese festivals.
We all love a festival and are aware of the potential fun, laughter, varied activities, late nights and dancing that they offer.
However, many of us have also experienced some unwanted side effects of spending time sleeping in a tent in the rain and mud, with minimal sleep, restricted food options, dodgy toilets, limited washing facilities and various other excesses thrown in for good measure…all of which can have a negative impact on our digestion and potentially lead to symptoms both during the festival and when we return home.
To help you avoid these symptoms, we’ve put together some basic tips to help keep your gut in good shape if a festival or two form part of your summer plans.
Tip #1: Be aware of what you’re eating Quick and easy food options, such as pasta, burger and chips are often the only choices available, and these ‘beige’ foods have low nutritional value and can contribute to gut symptoms.
Some festivals have vegan and ethnic food options , based around beans, lentils and legumes and include healthier options such as rice and veg. Limiting your intake of processed and sugary foods, taking some healthy long-life snacks with you, such as low-sugar protein bars, nuts and dried fruit, and getting back on track as soon as you get home, can all help too..
Tip #3: Maximise your sleep any way you can
Festivals are synonymous with late nights and reduced sleep due to noise and early morning light if you are camping and lack of sleep can also impact digestion.
Take a sleep mask and some ear plugs or ear defenders, and make sure you have warm clothes and sleeping bags or blankets to put under and over you, as well as a comfortable pillow - they can all help to maximise those precious minutes of sleep.
Bonus tip: Don’t forget your probiotics
Tip #2: Drink more water than you think you need
People tend to drink more alcohol and fizzy drinks and less water whilst at a festival, which can contribute to dehydration and in turn cause gut health issues and constipation. Summer sunshine can also increase sweating and mean that you need to drink more.
Drink water continuously throughout the day and try to match each of your alcoholic drinks with at least one large glass of water to help prevent dehydration.
To prepare your gut for a festival and support it through the fun and return to your normal routine, try taking a probiotic supplement a few days before going, every day while you are there and for a week or two after you come home.

of gemstones and diamonds that were perfect for our design. She helped to lead me through the process of selecting the perfect gemstones, educating me to the different properties of each stone, but honestly, it was very much a decision of the heart not the head. I was instinctively drawn to the gemstone that spoke to me. Once we had finalised all of the elements, Anton Kata began work, hand making my forever piece of jewellery in their workshop.
When you finally get to meet your perfect forever piece of jewellery, it is such a thrilling moment, the anticipation and the final reveal is well worth the wait.

Their aim is to provide affordable luxury, regardless of project size, and it’s appreciated that buying a kitchen is a big decision, which is why they like to really take the time to get to know their customers and understand their vision. They believe your kitchen should have the same individuality as you.
Kutchenhaus manage your entire project locally, from measure, design, and aftercare, eliminating the need for big call centres. They also work closely with a wide variety of branded suppliers to bring you appliances from partners including BORA, Miele, Neff, AEG and Quooker to name but a few.

The team will work to capture an initial vision, creating a bespoke design and selecting the finishing touches, right through to the complete installation of the kitchen. Why Kutchenhaus?
Kutchenhaus has a wide variety of styles and appliances to choose from which are on-trend and has its finger consistently on the pulse when it comes to kitchen inspiration.
Its recent trends survey delved into what customers want from their kitchen and found modern handleless styles were the most popular, with downdraft hobs a standout ‘must-have’ appliance, for example. As for colour, green proved to be the most sought-after this year among customers visiting its showrooms with blue coming a close second.
In addition to what’s currently trending, the brand has history behind it. As part of nobilia, customers can be certain that kitchens are built with them in mind. The business has spent over 70 years investing in technology, research and product development to deliver high quality, design-led, German-engineered kitchens.
This means that customers benefit from extensive industry experience, knowledge, and inspirational innovations. With decades spent in research and product development, they receive complete peace of mind that their Kutchenhaus kitchen is made to last.

Bathroom trends to look out for this summer With bathroom design specialist Ripples
Whether your taste is classic or innovative, there are countless ways to add your individuality and flair to a bathroom. However, as trends are ever-evolving, it can be challenging to decide what elements to include in your design. Here Senior Designer Matilda, from Ripples Tunbridge Wells gives you the lowdown on the biggest trends she is seeing emerge in bathroom design for summer.
A fresh take on fluting
The trend for fluting in bathrooms shows no signs of disappearing but is certainly evolving. This trend is no longer so prominent on furniture but is growing in popularity on glass elements such as wall lights, pendant lights, and shower screens.
Light it up
Bathroom lighting no longer needs to be restricted to just ceiling lights or the occasional downlighter. We’re seeing more and more demand for mixed lighting schemes, including a combination of pendants, wall lights, underlighting and sensor lighting. This is the perfect trend for those wanting to create a stylish yet practical space.
Mixed brassware
Mixed brassware is becoming increasingly common. This trend involves using multiple metal finishes within a single bathroom space, such as pairing Brushed Nickel basin taps with a Brushed Bronze shower. This trend creates interest throughout a scheme, particularly as each brassware type will mature and some will even develop their own patina over time.
Adding variety with vanities
We’re seeing more and more colour being introduced through vanity units. Deep, rich tones tend to be the most popular although pastels work well too. As interiors trends follow fashion trends, we’re expecting brown and yellow to soon emerge as the sought-after colours to try.
Pops of pink
After the colour green has dominated bathrooms for the last few seasons, we’re seeing the re-emergence of pink. Pink tiles are gaining in popularity, particularly on feature walls. Also pink panelling is becoming a more sought after finish.
Shape over pattern
We’re seeing an emerging trend for tiles which add interest through shape rather than pattern. After a huge amount of interest for heavily patterned tiles over recent years, we’re seeing the trend move to neutral tones in pentagonal, hexagonal and even triangular formats.

Designing the Ultimate Kitchen
Open-plan kitchens are all about space, space for cooking, space for family and friends, space for entertainment.
74 JUNE 2024
LUXURY KITCHEN & BATHROOM GUIDE
This kitchen is another masterpiece by Krieder, who have worked in collaboration with Offset Architects to create a wonderful and generous open-plan kitchen, dining and living space, for this magnificent family home set on a private estate in South East London.
The client’s brief was to design the ultimate kitchen, to regularly entertain family and friends, as well as hosting special events. The kitchen needed to be designed to accommodate professional chefs to produce the finest haute cuisine, incorporating state-of-the-art cooking appliances, steam ovens, teppanyaki hot plates, wine coolers and large fridges.
It was clear the kitchen would act as a theatre to enjoy such catering experiences; therefore a large seating area was required to observe such culinary delights. Equally the homeowners wanted to enjoy the space for after dinner, and to avoid the feeling they would remain in the same space. Therefore, offering the option to close off and concealing the cooking apparatus would be the perfect solution.
The design team employed a forward-thinking approach, modelling, and tailoring a living solution where design becomes a natural, universal environment to suit the client’s lifestyle, and with the use of exclusive and desirable materials to achieve a modern, luxurious aesthetic. Designed with a main island to provide workspace and storage and to act as a natural divider between kitchen and living areas is central to its layout. The kitchen island is fully clad in a porcelain surface by MDi, and the tall sleek cupboards housing the appliances, wine coolers and secret doors are finished in a crosscut veneer oak from Krieder’s Kuadra range. This

combination of materials is fused into the design and are part of Krieder’s DNA to create functional products of enduring beauty.
The kitchen has also been designed to cater for those long summer days and integrate seamlessly with the garden area via the huge sliding wall of glass which divides the kitchen to the outdoor space. Once these doors are fully opened the area becomes one large indoor and outdoor space.
This kitchen is a typical design by Krieder and shows how they maximise the space and understand their client’s lifestyle needs, together with creating a sense of harmony, style, and sheer indulgence within every kitchen they design.

Storage Solutions for Everyone

3different types of larder, extra wide/deep and high base units (3D fit), floor to ceiling options, and up to 3 made-to-measure units (from certain ranges) at no extra cost. Larders: The open-shelf cabinet is a good, solid entry level cabinet with adjustable shelves, the Pantry cabinet gives easy access via shelving and door storage, while the Larder cabinet is the ultimate in storage – full extension, individual pull out drawers mean that everything is instantly accessible and visible, with no void necessary above the shelf to lift items out.

A 6-drawer format means it is much easier to create a streamlined kitchen as well: 1 deep drawer & 3 shallow; 3 medium; 1 deep, 1 medium and 1 shallow – the options are many, but the horizontal lines will flow in perfect symmetry with other units in the kitchen. The extra height unit also caters for the taller profile of most kitchen users today.
3D Fit: With plinth heights from 7cm to 20cm, Unit heights from 52cm to 91cm, 4 different depths,
and bespoke widths to the nearest millimetre, every single inch of available space in the kitchen can be utilised. Whether you are 5 foot nothing, or 6 foot 7 inches – the height can work for you! Schmidt’s standard 67.5cm base unit is joined by 3 other depths: 35, 62.5 and a jumbo 70cm unit – which can achieve up to 26% more storage, and of course more worktop space as well.

Salone del Mobile furniture fair & Milan Design Week 2024
Installations, interiors, exhibitions, energy, furniture, frolics. Yes, it’s the Salone del Mobile furniture fair and Milan Design Week 2024.
With the Milanese streets abuzz with excitement, it’s where luxury interior design and theatricality collide. From immersive installations – exhibits to climb through, light shows set to music, rooms focused on smell and mood, usually-off-limit buildings to explore – furniture found new and creative ways to wow us.
DEEP REDS:
Dive into the full-bodied richness that dominated this year’s Milan showrooms; fruity burgundy/ cherry/oxblood shades that feel intense and energising as well as muted and elegant at the same time. The colours came in all guises, from gleaming lacquer to please-tell-me-where-yourquarry-is heavily veined marble; carried best on forms that were simplistic in
order to let the rich pigment lead the way and set the tone in stone.
LACQUERS:
‘Shinier, glossier, more polished!’ yelled the walkways of Salone del Mobile, and the designers delivered, with hard furniture from dining tables to storage covered in layers of practically mirror-like brilliance at every turn. How does lacquer impact a space? It turns any object into a sculpture, a working reflection-distorting piece of art that draws all eyes in.
Long associated with extravagance and elegance, lacquered furniture has a history of making an impact indoors. This year, lacquered furniture is all about contrast: classic tones such as iconic deep red and dark bottle green are being combined with experimental, contemporary forms, the designs standing monolith-like within a room, awaiting discussion and admiration alike.

PADDED & PILLOWY:
Get ready to sink into unadulterated comfort –contemporary furniture is getting super- stuffed. This year’s design cohort of chairs, sofas, footstools, tables and more are voluptuous, curvy designs that aren’t skimping on materials. From cushions on seating that seem over-filled, plush, and puffy to generously shaped hard furniture, this design movement tells the story of cosiness and relaxation where more is oh-so more.
Each piece is outrageously tempting – you can practically feel it enveloping you before you’ve even begun to take a seat. They’re soothing. Welcoming. Each piece is a sanctuary – nothing and no one can get you (possibly even find you) when you’re nestled safely in these soft, cocooning embraces.
PRODUCT FOCUS: DS-888, DE-SEDE
Enter, next-level seating flexibility. Following visually in the footsteps of its much celebrated predecessor: the 1972-designed DS-600, the DS-
888 is similarly snake-like and curvaceous thanks to a set of thin segments. What’s new is the backrest –able to move in multiple directions, the recurrent upholstered ridges can each be customised in height and angle to create individual head and neck support, as well as innovatively sliding along the modular base to be positioned as needed.
“With the DS-888 Collina, we wanted to redefine the limits of what is possible with a modular design and achieve a seating landscape that stands out with its versatility, ergonomics and sophisticated aesthetics.” Monika Walser, CEO of de Sede.
Created for use inside and out, the interior sofa is upholstered in premium leather on a high gloss chrome, or satin black, base frame, while the weatherproof outdoor models are wrapped in durable fabric developed by Kvadrat and The Romo Group on stainless steel frames in finishes such as black silk matt or white silk gloss. chaplins.co.uk

Summer Season
As we step into June, we welcome longer days and warmer temperatures with open arms. UK landscapes and gardens burst with a kaleidoscope of colours.
Our beloved favourites are blooming including Cornflowers, Lupins, Delphiniums, Peonies, Irises, and Roses.
This month brings forth the time when the tasks of gardening gradually yield to the sheer pleasure of relishing our outdoor sanctuaries. While we eagerly await the summer sunshine, we make time for nurturing and maintaining our cherished plants, ensuring they thrive in the season’s abundance. As the daylight hours extend to their peak, June offers a balance of garden maintenance and moments of appreciation. It’s a time for tending to the needs of our plants, while also taking the opportunity to pause and revel in the beauty they bestow.
From the dead heading of spent bedding plant flowers to coaxing a second burst of colour from tired perennials, there are many ways to invigorate our garden spaces. Regular pruning of roses ensures
a continuous display of flowers flourish throughout the season, a simple yet effective technique for encouraging repeat flowering.
June presents an ideal window for pruning spring-flowering shrubs, as well as reshaping topiaries and trimming evergreen hedges for a polished aesthetic. These small but significant tasks contribute to the overall beauty and allure of our gardens, for all who wander within.
Feeding our plants is paramount during this period of growth, with a special emphasis on nourishing roses to promote robust and abundant flowering. Applying a well-balanced feed regularly, especially to containers and hanging baskets, sustains the vitality of our garden blooms and ensures a continuous parade of colour. Also, consider watering routines, many plants may require more frequent hydration in the face of warm weather and drying winds. A mindful approach to watering, ensuring moisture reaches the roots by watering at the base of each plant, fosters optimal growth and resilience.
By employing these techniques, we can maintain the health and vitality of our gardens throughout the hotter months, ensuring they remain vibrant havens of natural beauty and tranquility. Whether it’s nurturing plants or tending to their upkeep, we stand ready to assist you in achieving and maintaining your garden aspirations.

Invasive Threat
Asian Hornets in the UK
Asian Hornets (Vespa Velutina) have arrived in the United Kingdom. What began with sporadic sightings and nests prior to 2023 has now evolved into a concerning reality, with over 50 nests discovered and eradicated in the past year alone.
Asian Hornets are apex predators, each colony consumes more than 10 kilograms of insects in a season, of which about a third are honey bees. Their hunting strategy involves capturing insects, often on the wing, and transporting them back to provide protein to their larvae. They trigger a defensive response in bees which leads to hive paralysis and halts foraging and pollinating activities.
To combat the spread of Asian Hornets effectively, strategic measures must be implemented. While trapping shows promise as a control method, it is crucial to employ selective traps to minimize collateral damage to beneficial insects. Indiscriminate trapping methods, such as drown traps and modified soft drink bottles, even those with a few “escape holes” can inadvertently harm non-target species. Just a few poorly designed traps can kill as many innocent insects in a year as an Asian Hornet colony and will also kill many other insects too small for the hornet to prey on.
The situation calls for urgent collective action from beekeepers, gardeners, and the wider community. Selective trapping by gardeners on flowering plants, coupled with vigilant monitoring and reporting to the National Bee Unit (NBU), will help curb the spread of these invasive predators.
“Do
not confuse Asian Hornets with the larger, and beneficial, native European Hornets. Asian Hornets are mostly black with an orange/yellow abdomen stripe and, harder to see, yellow legs.”
It is essential to prioritize the use of selective traps, such as the UK manufactured Gard’Apis Sentinel trap, which efficiently catches Asian Hornets without harming other insect species. Developed and tested in France this trap offers a sustainable and targeted approach. Do not confuse Asian Hornets with the larger, and beneficial, native European Hornets. Asian Hornets are mostly black with an orange/yellow abdomen stripe and, harder to see, yellow legs.
By working together to implement effective control measures and safeguard our native insect populations, we can preserve biodiversity and protect the vital role of pollinators in our environment.

From Wish List to Your New House
A Guide to a New Build
Building a new house is an exciting but complex journey requiring meticulous planning, coordination, and communication. Mrs B of Sevenoaks worked with IQ Property Services to have her new home built and has kindly provided an account of the process.
Initial Consultation
“Our journey began with a consultation with Tony at IQ. He asked us to compile wish lists detailing our dream home’s design and how we envisioned living in it. This process helped identify our lifestyle needs and preferences.”
Understanding Lifestyle Needs
“Presenting our wish lists to Tony revealed deeper insights. For instance, our desire for a basement golf driving range highlighted the need for adjustment of room heights and specialist services installations, translating lifestyle desires into practical requirements.”
Engaging Specialists and Consultants
“Tony identified the need for various specialists from our wish lists. He emphasized selecting the right architect and consultants ensuring we had the best expertise for the design phase.”
Design Phase and Visualization
“The design phase involved detailed discussions over several months. We opted for a 3D walkthrough of our design, allowing us to visualize the completed home, adjust layouts, and tweak elements before construction began.”
Tender Documents and Contract Formation
“Once the design was finalized, Tony prepared tender documents and specifications. This ensured contractors would bid on the same scope of work, making comparisons straightforward. IQ solicited bids from numerous contractors, which Tony meticulously evaluated. After careful vetting and interviews, we selected a contractor. IQ ensured all necessary checks were in place and that the contractor had the financial capability to complete the project. The JCT contract included a retention clause.”
Construction and Project Completion
“With the contractor selected and all necessary insurances and health and safety processes in place, construction began. IQ managed the project, ensuring adherence to plans and resolving issues as they arose. Upon completion, a final inspection addressed any defects.
“Finally, we moved into our new home, a culmination of careful planning, expert management, and collaborative effort. While intricate and sometimes challenging, the journey was ultimately rewarding.
“IQ helped us to navigate the complexities of building a new home with confidence and achieving the desired results.”
