Your heart is precious, and so are your memories

‘A long-awaited positive step.’ Make your legacy unforgettable as promising findings offer hope to thousands.

Who could forget the choices, events, surprises and happenstances that brought you to this very moment in time? Those pivotal cogs that set the wheel of life in motion and often only make sense in retrospect. In truth, any of us could.

So, news of, “a long-awaited positive step,” in keeping those precious memories alive, funded by the generosity of British Heart Foundation (BHF) supporters, is just as remarkable as it sounds. This promising research is only in its infancy and your legacy could be that one decision that helps change the course of scientific history – for countless people around the world.

Every five minutes, someone in the UK has a stroke. That’s as long as it takes to boil a kettle, to read these two pages, or to make a decision that could change the course of history. At British Heart Foundation we’re powering vital research to find new treatments for strokes including lacunar strokes – which are linked with nearly half of all dementias and account for more than one in five strokes in the UK.

Empty spaces

Lacunar strokes affect the small blood vessels – less than a millimetre wide – deep inside the brain. They were first named in the 1950s, when ‘lacunae’, or empty spaces, were spotted in the brain of those affected from them. Sometimes described as ‘small’ strokes, they can happen without the patient noticing. The more they happen, the more likely you are to develop problems with thinking or even dementia. This can be combined with mood disorders, depression or balance issues.

“For a long time, people thought all strokes were due to blood clots or blood vessels bursting,” says Professor Joanna Wardlaw. “Only recently have we realised there is a set of strokes caused by problems with small blood vessels. These milder strokes have literally gone under the radar,” she explains.

Professor Wardlaw is an expert in brain scanning and her internationally recognised research focuses on tr ying to prevent, diagnose and treat stroke more effectively. This includes a recent trial, funded by British Heart Foundation, which found that lacunar strokes could be treated for the first time by repurposing two existing drugs that are already being used to treat other conditions These findings are a vital step closer towards improving the lives of the more than 25,000 individuals a year affected by this form of stroke, in the UK alone.

This invaluable research provides a ray of hope to not only them, but their nearest and dearest too – as it strives to keep precious thoughts and memories alive.

Slowing the tide is just the beginning

The trial, led by the Universities of Edinburgh and Nottingham, involved 363 people who had experienced a lacunar stroke. As well as their standard stroke prevention treatment, for one year par ticipants took either isosorbide mononitrate or cilostazol individually, both drugs together, or neither

A year after the trial, participants that took both drugs were nearly 20% less likely to have problems with their thinking and memory compared to the group that did not take either drug. If these findings aren’t powerful enough, it was also found that these participants were also more independent and reported a better quality of life. Researchers hope that if the results are confirmed in further trials, the two drugs could be available as a treatment for lacunar strokes within five years.

These findings may help far beyond treatment, as Professor Wardlaw says there’s a chance that further research could indicate the drugs’ usefulness in prevention too.

“If it works in people who have had symptoms, it seems plausible it could work in people who haven’t had symptoms but are at high risk, perhaps due to family history,” says Professor Wardlaw. “It might be that you could use it as a treatment for people who haven’t had a stroke yet.”

This major step forward is only the beginning and with your help – the best is yet to come.

Let your legacy change the course of history for the better

Gifts in Wills from our donors fund over half of the research supported by BHF, research that has helped lower UK death rates from heart and circulatory diseases by 75% since the charity’s inception in the 1960s. Your contribution can be a part of something huge, leaving a legacy that will be an essential cog in the wheel of fighting conditions like lacunar strokes and vascular dementia.

Together, we can fuel visionary research that will bring hope to future generations and keep memories alive.*

Once your loved ones are taken care of, you could leave a gift too. It’s a quiet act that makes the biggest difference.

FISH UNION

Cornish hake fillet, charred purple sprouting broccoli, spring onion butter sauce

Using seasonal produce, this delicious dish is the pure taste of Spring and perfect for dining at home over the Easter Bank Holiday.

Ingredients: Serves 4

Prep time: 15 minutes

Cook time:12 minutes

• 4 fillets of hake (available form Fish Union)

• 500gms purple sprouting broccoli

• For the sauce:

• 200gms good quality unsalted butter

• 100mls good white wine vinegar

• 50mls white wine

• 10 peppercorns (preferably white)

• 1 shallot

• A splash of double cream

• 1 bunch spring onions finely chopped (white and green separated)

Method

“This delicious melt in the mouth dish is a firm favourite amongst Fish Union’s guests”

1. To prepare the sauce, add the white wine, vinegar, finely diced shallots and peppercorns to a thick bottomed saucepan and reduce by 2 thirds.

2. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.

3. For the broccoli, pan fry in a medium hot pan with a little bit of oil and a knob of butter. The idea is to almost caramelise the broccoli. Place the broccoli on a roasting tray and season well with good sea salt and freshly milled pepper.

4. Pat the skin of the fish dry with a sheet of kitchen towel, this will help to achieve a crispier skin. Lightly oil a non-stick frying pan and heat to a medium heat, not smoking. Gently place the fish into the pan, skin side down. Once the fish is cooked 70% turn it over and remove from the heat. The residual heat of the pan will finish the cooking in a controlled way, to ensure the fillet is moist.

5. Place the broccoli into the oven, and in a small saucepan add two tablespoons of the vinegar reduction. Place it on a medium heat and add a

splash of double cream, then slowly whisk in the diced, cold butter. Do not allow the sauce to boil or it will split, so keep moving the pan on and off the heat. Once the butter is incorporated, add the white slices of spring onion. Add the green slices of the spring onions just before plating.

6. Place the broccoli in the centre of a bowl, top with the fish and serve the butter sauce around or in a small side jug. Enjoy!

‘Take in The Tide’ at Greenwich Peninsula

Expedite the changing of the seasons by shaking off gloomy monochrome along with the gloomy mood - and feast your eyes on some of the most colourful outdoor sculptures in the capital right on our doorstep, at Greenwich Peninsula.

The Tide is a pedestrian walkway initially 1km in length, running from Peninsula Square and along the riverside, but eventually stretching 5km around the whole of Greenwich Peninsula.

With the surrounding Peninsula neighbourhood, the Tide is home to an impressive collection of works from some world-renowned artists including Allen Jones, Morag Mysercough, Anthony Gormley and no less than six Damien Hirst sculptures - possibly the largest free-to-view collection of his works anywhere.

One of the latest installations is from Turner Prize nominee Ian Davenport. Famous for his poured paintings, Davenport has created Poured Staircase: a river of colour cascading down the Tide steps in irresistible candy stripes. This is the first site-specific work from Davenport, and it’s brilliantly realised, encouraging visitors to walk and play along the artwork as it flows down this transitional space.

“I have seen my artworks take shape all across the world, in some of the most beautiful

locations.” said the artist. “It’s incredibly exciting to see it now come to life on Greenwich Peninsula, so close to my home and in an area of London I love. I enjoy seeing echoes of the fluid form reflected back in the shape of The Tide, and in the proximity to the river.”

For more sculptural serotonin, you can find The River in Verse installed on the glass facades surrounding Davenport’s work. London-based, Beirut-born artist Marwan Kaabour incorporates nine languages spoken by local Greenwich communities in this work: a series of multilingual poetic extracts that contemplate water, its fluidity and expressiveness, set on a rainbow-coloured dichroic background.

Step off the Tide to find Rangoli Mirrored Cosmos, by the rapidly rising star of London’s graphic art scene, Murugiah. Murugiah combines his Sri Lankan Heritage, Western upbringing and architectural training to present a modern take on the Hindu tradition of Rangoli: celebratory mandala designs. This 3D manifestation rises out of Peninsula Square: a colourful illuminated flower as striking at dusk as it is in the day.

This spring, we are excited to be collaborating with artistic design company, Kinetika, on our Easter trail. Hand-painted silk flags designed by local community groups complement the picturesque gardens. Make your way along the trail and find nature and colourinspired activities for the whole family.

1960’s Easter Fete at Emmetts Garden

Emmetts Easter fête is back by popular demand. Join us for lots of family fun on the Meadow this spring. Enjoy Splat the Rat, hook-a-duck, cornhole, a dance off, and other 1960s-inspired games as we celebrate 60 years since Emmetts Garden was left to the National Trust.

Chartwell, Blooming and Blossoming

The gardens at Chartwell are strikingly beautiful in springtime. Magnolia trees underplanted with daffodils frame the path on the approach to the house and delicate pink and white cherry blossom blow in the spring breeze. Around 30 different varieties of camellia provide the garden with a

profusion of extravagant blooms. Around the Golden Orfe ponds, azaleas and rhododendrons are a feast for the eyes, as are the vibrant green shuttlecock ferns unfurling by the Gavin Jones waterfall.

In the Walled Garden, spot rhubarb and other seasonal veg as well as a variety of cheerful daffodils including the ‘Winston Churchill’. The cut flower beds are teeming with tulips in Clementine Churchill’s preferred pastel shades.

A Sea of Bluebells at Emmetts Garden

Emmetts Garden is renowned for its spring colour, from the sea of bluebells in the woodland during April to the vibrant colours of over 100 different species of rhododendrons and azaleas in May.

Discover the spectacular tulip meadow shaded by cherry blossom trees with far-reaching views over the Kentish Weald. The beautiful pink blossom of the Prunus ‘Fugenzo’ comes into flower at the start of May and the cherry trees are underplanted with a carpet of ‘Pink Diamond’, ‘Kingsblood’ and ‘Queen of the Night’ tulips.

The handkerchief and wedding cake trees are both distinct and unusual trees that look wonderful at this time of year. The handkerchief tree is named after its beautiful white flower-like bracts which flutter like handkerchiefs in the breeze, while the branches of the wedding cake tree grow in horizontal tiers.

“Sargent’s Palette in Bloom” at Ightham Mote.

Join us at Ightham Mote this Spring for our series of displays celebrating renowned artist John Singer Sargent, his love of colour and

the inspiration he drew from the English Country Garden. We continue to celebrate Sargent when we launch on March 1 2024, the display for the first time ever, of his paintbox and palettes. These provide a behind the scenes glimpse into his technique, working methods and his favourite range of paint colours.

Flowers from the Ightham Mote gardens have been chosen to copy and complement Sargent’s paintings. His unconventional handling of blocks of colour and the bold use of flowers as structural design changed the face of painting in his lifetime.

In tandem, we will be setting the scene by focussing upon a garden theme, leading to the momentous occasion in summer 2024 when we can reconnect with our historic Walled Garden. Since 1985 this area has helped provide sufficient visitor parking. With the completion of the recent infrastructure project, it will be released back to us for our gardening and creative teams to work together with our community to reinstate a stunning garden.

Challenge & Excite

Bishop Challoner School is hosting a Year 5 and 6 Taster Day event aimed at current year 5 and 6 students.

The taster day promises an exciting glimpse into senior school life at Bishop Challoner. Planned activities include Fabulous Fencers, Dramarama, Misfit Linguistics, and Crazy Scientists. The event will provide prospective students with a valuable opportunity to meet and build connections with their peers and class teachers.

Our school offers a wide and balanced curriculum that challenges and excites. Children throughout the Junior School have specialist teachers for music, sport, Modern Foreign Languages and IT. In Years 5 & 6 we introduce Latin and pupils in Year 6 have specialist teaching in maths and science as we prepare them for the transition into the Senior School. Again, this is made as seamless as possible as pupils are already familiar with the Senior School staff, school layout and expectations. Likewise, staff will know the pupils well and have thorough records and assessment data that will be ongoing as they progress towards external exams and Sixth Form.

From Nursery to Sixth Form, our Mission Statement is at the heart of school life and states ‘We strive to develop and nurture each child’s unique talents. To live, love and learn like Christ and fulfil their true potential in an ever changing world.’

We believe that, at Bishop Challoner, pupils are given the support, encouragement and guidance to reach their potential and be the best they can possibly be. Pupils can be challenged, take risks and feel comfortable through consistent, well-planned teaching by staff who know them. Our school is able to track and monitor their progress and provide on-going support to ensure each pupil reaches their full potential.

We are a Catholic school and our faith underpins all that we do. However, we respect all faiths and are delighted to welcome families, with beliefs different to our own, who are committed to getting the best for their children. We value the strength, loyalty and diversity of our school community.

Pupils are able to be challenged, take risks and feel comfortable through consistent, well-planned teaching by staff who know them. The school is able to track and monitor their progress and provide on-going support to ensure each pupil reaches their full potential.

Discover Cobham Hall A School Like No Other

Ne estled in 150 acres of stunning Kent countryside but only 30 minutes from the buzz of central London; steeped in 500 years of history, yet with a curriculum firmly focused on the future: Cobham Hall is a school of many contrasts. Where else will you find sixth formers trying their hand at car maintenance while a herd of deer grazes in the background?

The grandeur of Cobham Hall’s 16th century buildings is home to an independent school like no other. A school whose warm and caring body of day and boarding students is rooted in their local community, yet globally engaged. A school that inspires excellence, nurtures courage and self-belief, and equips young people for a future of unprecedented change.

Education for life.

A Cobham Hall education is not just about results (though the school’s are excellent) – it’s an education for life. Preparing students for an unknown tomorrow is a responsibility Cobham takes immensely seriously. Developing essential life skills is core to the curriculum, cemented in Cobham’s bespoke Perspectives course. From creativity to curiosity, communication skills to adaptability, Perspectives lessons help students develop the attributes and skills they will need to thrive, whatever the future brings.

A life less ordinary.

Cobham Hall believes brilliance lies within every student and inspires each to have the courage to challenge themselves and find their own unique, fulfilling path in life. Happy young people learn, and the school ensures its core values of Trust, Respect, Honesty, Kindness and Tolerance infuse every part of their experience. A world of opportunity.

With a superb enrichment programme and over 40 co-curricular activities available, from Boxing Fitness to Sushi Making, STEM Club to Creative Writing, opportunities to discover new talents are legion. The school also forges those industry connections that really make a difference in life. PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS

The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions

Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.

Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated –as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.

The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.

“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”

In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.

The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.

Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.

“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

Treasured Memories

Looking for peace of mind, security and affordability? Look no further.

Hi there, I’m a Chislehurst-based wedding photographer, with over 14 years experience. I can honestly say that I still love my job - so much so, that I don’t think of it as a job, more a vocation in life.

Each wedding is unique, and that’s what makes it fun! I love working in different venues in and around Kent. It gives me that drive to continue making clients happy.

When I sense a nervous bride, I start by chatting away and then by showing her the photos as we go along. This often infuses them with a sense of confidence, as they can then see what the camera sees!

I even help brides and bridesmaids into their dresses and have been known to curl hair - in a hair emergency!

Friends often ask me how I got in to photography. Much to my husband’s irritation of me re-telling this story, it was actually the fact that I dated a paparazzi photographer. We travelled the world to spot celebrities, and it was when my photo’s ended up in Hello and Heat magazine, as well as The Sun newspaper, I thought I’d have a go! Brad Pitt was quite easy on the lens too!

Where does this flair come from? Well, I always loved art and drawing as a child, and I have a degree in Graphic Design which encompassed photography. I then became a Graphic Designer for 10 years, and now a photographer.

I always try and give that little bit more, to make me stand out from other photographers, even helping them with ideas and giving them contacts for DJ’s and cake-makers etc.

I am a calm, yet confident woman with a discreet creative approach, so you can be sure you’ll get excellent results if you book me, and we’ll have a laugh on the way as I am by your (or your son or daughter’s) side for most of the day. And I also help the day run to schedule, where I can. If you fancy a chat, please pick up the phone and call, Whatsap me or drop me an email. I’d love to hear from you!

Transferring your assets to loved ones

Blended families have become increasingly common in today’s society. As relationships evolve and individuals remarry or enter into new partnerships, estate planning becomes a crucial consideration to ensure the fair and smooth transfer of assets to loved ones.

One of the most critical steps in estate planning is updating your will to ensure that your wishes regarding asset distribution are clearly outlined. Failing to update your will after entering a new relationship may lead to unintended consequences, with assets potentially passing to the wrong beneficiaries or even causing legal disputes.

When updating your will, it is essential to consider the following points:

Spousal/civil partner inheritance rights

In the UK, a spouse or civil partner has certain automatic inheritance rights, regardless of what is stated in a will. It is important to understand these rights and ensure that your wishes align with them.

Provision for biological children

If you have children from a previous relationship, you may wish to ensure that they are adequately provided for in your estate plan. This can be achieved through specific provisions in your will, such as leaving assets or establishing trusts to benefit your children.

Providing for a new spouse or partner

Many individuals want to provide for their new spouse or partner while also ensuring that their

children receive their fair share. Various strategies, such as life interest trusts or discretionary trusts, can be implemented to strike a balance between these competing interests.

Guardianship of minor children

If you have minor children, it is vital to address guardianship arrangements in your will. Clearly, designating who will assume guardianship responsibilities ensures that your children will be cared for according to your wishes.

Communication and managing expectations

Discussing your wishes and intentions with all relevant parties can help manage expectations and minimise potential conflicts. Consider involving family members, especially those directly affected by your estate plan, in the discussion process. Addressing matters proactively can help avoid misunderstandings and resentment later on.

Given the complexities involved in estate planning for blended families, it is strongly recommended to seek professional guidance from an experienced solicitor to help you understand the legal implications.

To speak to a member of our Wills and Estate Administration team, call 01689 887 887.

Chosen to live together without marrying?

Here we unravel the myths of cohabitation…

Maria James, partner and joint head of family law at Thomas Dunton Solicitors LLP, explores the myths surrounding cohabitation, and outlines how couples already cohabiting, or planning to cohabit, can help safeguard their position.

Do I have fewer rights if I do not marry legally?

Yes. Cohabiting couples do not enjoy the same rights as their married counterparts, or those in a civil partnership, irrespective of the length of time they have lived together.

Unmarried couples living together are currently treated in law as two separate individuals. You have no automatic rights against your partner if you split, and are not entitled to anything you do not jointly own. It can get quite complicated (and costly) in proving ownership of assets, so seeking legal advice is recommended.

How can we protect ourselves?

A cohabitation agreement sets out how you wish your assets to be divided in the event of separation, death, or serious illness. It also provides guidance on arrangements for personal property, liability for debt, credit agreements, ownership or provision of cars, gifts, living expenses, provision of life insurance for each other, to name a few examples.

Having a will is also vital, as cohabitees are not included in those who can benefit under Intestacy Rules. So, if you are not married and

you or your partner die without a will, the other will not benefit from your estate.

What if we have children?

Child maintenance can be claimed from the parent with whom the children do not live. If this cannot be agreed between the parties, an application can be made to the Child Maintenance Service.

When should I seek legal advice?

The law relating to cohabitation is complex, so we recommend you seek legal guidance at the outset of a relationship. Likewise, it is important, when entering into any agreement, that you and your partner do so freely and voluntarily, and that full disclosure has been made of all relevant financial and other circumstances. Independent legal advice will achieve this.

How can Thomas Dunton help?

From cohabitation agreements and deeds of trusts, to child contact and financial provisions, our team of accredited, highly trained and personable family law solicitors are fully accustomed to dealing with the complexities of family life and the legal issues that can arise.

OIN THE COUNTRY

Your local store for all outdoor clothing for the whole family, plus shooting accessories, leather goods, dog training equipment, and much more.

wner, Gail Thomas, explains how she got involved in this thriving business based in Badlesmere, just a few miles from Lenham on the Ashford Road.

Gail says: ‘I live at Eastwell Park, where my partner is the head keeper. Originally I was working for a national house builder selling houses but took voluntary redundancy. ‘

‘Enjoying a brief period of being a lady of leisure, I popped into a local shop, the Kent Wool Growers, for a pair of Wellington boots. Whilst there trying on boots, I chatted to the assistant who told me he had just got himself a new job and

would be leaving. He then mentioned that they hadn’t filled the vacancy and that the job would be perfect for me!

And so I ended up working for Kent Wool Growers for 7 years; a great place, very interesting and with great customers, fantastic characters and never a dull moment. This is where I learnt all about clothing, footwear and – most importantly – good customer service.

Chatting to a friend whilst having lunch in my local, I mentioned that I might like to go it alone and open my own shop. She then told me about possible premises that were only a few miles from home! The very next morning I viewed and secured it straight away. So started the ‘In The Country’ venture here in Badlesmere. 68 MARCH 2024 FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY

International Women’s Day falls on 8th March each year and is a day of celebration of the achievements of women worldwide. To celebrate this day in 2024, ProVen Probiotics is launching a gut-health related program specifically for women over 40 years of age, who are heading into or already in menopause

The Rebel Up plan is a 10-week program that incorporates key elements to help support a healthy menopause experience – with an understanding that digestive health plays a key role in relation to this transition.

How is the gut linked to menopause?

The answer is – in many different ways, including energy production, brain health, weight, hormonal balance and specific vaginal symptoms, the precise mechanisms of which are not all yet clearly understood, but which include the following five key areas:

On a basic level, the GI tract is the main route by which the body removes excess hormones and if the digestive tract is not functioning well, this can also impact liver function and detoxification, leading to imbalanced hormones.

Healthy detoxification and elimination pathways are required to clear unwanted hormones from the body effectively and efficiently and our gut bacteria play a key role in both of these pathways, with different bacteria strains binding to toxins and breaking down foods to help eliminate unwanted compounds from the body.

As we reach menopause, both oestrogen and progesterone levels fall dramatically. Low oestrogen levels are linked to reduced gut microbiome diversity and particularly a reduction of Lactobacillus bacteria, which are the key strains found in the female genito-urinary tract. This reduction in Lactobacillus has been shown to increase susceptibility to UTIs and other infections and has also been associated with vaginal atrophy and related menopausal symptoms, such as itching, burning and dryness.

Our gut bacteria interacts directly with our endocrine system. Some bacteria specifically help to regulate and metabolise oestrogen, helping to recirculate oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone and ensuring oestrogen levels are balanced in relation to other hormones.

Gut bacteria are also known to be involved in manipulating metabolic physiology and cortisol production and thus influence weight and energy balance, key issues for some women during menopause.

Based on these reasons alone, it is clear that supporting the gut microbiome with probiotics could potentially help to support menopause-related outcomes, with Lactobacillus species also providing specific support for the genito-urinary microbiota.

SUPPORTING WOMEN THROUGH THEIR GUT

Our For Women product has been designed specifically for the female microbiome. Each capsule includes 12.5 billion of our extensively researched Lab4 probiotics, which contains two Lactobacillus acidophilus strains, and an additional 5 billion Lactobacillus gasseri, known to be one of the most abundant strains in the vaginal microbiome.

ProVen Probiotics For Women also contains cranberry extract and vitamin B6 to provide further support for women’s health and hormonal activity.

Get back to your best

Every athlete dreads injury. Especially when you’ve been training hard for a marathon or triathlon.

Being physically active has numerous benefits for your physical and mental health. But, strenuous training can take its toll on your body, leading to aches and pains, and sometimes even serious injury. In fact, changing the intensity of physical activity too quickly, and overtraining, are two of the most common causes of sports injuries.

If you find yourself with an injury, it can be tempting to train through the pain. Often this can make a minor injury much worse, requiring more in-depth medical investigations, and a longer recovery period. To avoid a more chronic injury developing, get your injury checked as soon as possible.

As a patient at Sevenoaks Medical Centre, you have access to a range of Consultants specialising in orthopaedics, sports injury, exercise and musculoskeletal medicine and rheumatology (inflammation).

Depending on your injury, further investigation may be needed to make a full diagnosis, and an MRI or CT scan, X-ray or Ultrasound can be done in the same building, often on the same day. When imaging and diagnostics could be the first step in your recovery, you don’t want to wait for an appointment.

The onsite physical therapy team provide a unique service which combines physiotherapy, osteopathy, hand therapy, women’s health, and sport medicine, all in one department. They’ll work with you to create a personalised rehabilitation and treatment programme at a pace that’s right for you. Getting you back to what you love doing, quickly.

To find out more visit sevenoaksmedialcentre. com or to make an enquiry, call 01732 775 800.

Essential loungewear trends

Snuggle up in style with these effortless outfits.

As we get into the depths of winter and the temperatures continue to drop, our comfiest clothes become more important than ever.

Whether it’s for weekend cocooning with the family, trying to keep warm while working from home or running errands on chilly mornings, loungewear is the perfect solution for your everyday winter wardrobe.

This season, fashion meets function with ultra-cosy fabrics, chic colour combinations, and sportswear-inspired styles you’ll want to wear around the clock.

These are the key loungewear trends to know about now…

Fuzzy fabrics

Teddy bear-esque textiles such as fleece and borg are bang on trend and provide extra insulation when you need it the most. For a beautifully luxe lounge look, opt for a minimalist two-piece set in a soft cream, white or ivory shade.

Latte lounging

As seen on Jennifer Lawrence and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, the ‘latte dressing’ trend – wearing a combination of coffee colours – has blown up on TikTok and it works perfectly with loungewear too. From milky tones to rich mocha, you can mix and match separates or go headto-toe in one shade.

Huggable hoodies

For days when you plan to stay put on the sofa, a super-soft oversized hoodie is the ultimate winter fashion fix. A cross between a dressing gown and a blanket, a fluffy hooded dress is wonderfully warm and makes a fantastic gift too.

Nurture Your Health at Chartwell Apothecary

The perfect place to pop in to for some help when needed

Located on the high street in Westerham is an ancient cottage that is the home to Chartwell Apothecary and Natural Healing Clinic.

So what does Apothecary mean? This word dates back to the middle ages and was used to describe the place where medicine was made, and the person who made the medicine. Therefore, Caroline Drew, the resident Medical Herbalist is now the Apothecary working in Chartwell Apothecary.

One of the unique provisions of this business is an extensively stocked herbal dispensary on the ground floor with an array of dried herbs, creams, tinctures, sprays, and washes.

There are two routes to accessing all of these wondrous healing entities.

Firstly Caroline has her private practice based here where she sees her patients for a oneon-one consultation and then prescribes and dispenses tailor-

made medicine to address all of their current health concerns, this could be anything from digestive issues to menopause or hay fever to insomnia. As the treatment progresses the medicine will be altered accordingly. This is definitely not a one size fits all health paradigm.

Alternatively if you have any day to day health niggles then why not call in on a Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday between the hours of 10:00 - 14:00 when Caroline is always available for free over the counter advice and can offer a range of solutions that she makes in the dispensary. These include organic medicinal tea blends formulated to address a range of symptoms including sinus pain, digestive discomfort, anxiety, adrenal fatigue, hay fever or concentration. Caroline also has a range of cough, cold and immune boosting tonics to help with any seasonal sniffles or reduced immunity as we near the end of the winter months. These are a staple for any first aid cupboard and have been tried, tested and are now well loved amongst her loyal customers. What ever health challenges you are experiencing there is always something that can be done to help. Chartwell Apothecary & Natural Healing Clinic also has a team of expert, friendly therapists who can support you with various approaches including Acupuncture, Body Stress Release, Counselling, Hypnotherapy, Psychotherapy and Massage.

HOUSE & GARDEN

Unlock the potential in your garden

Spring is fast approaching, and there is no better time to begin planning your new garden space than right now.

Spring brings with it longer days, better weather and the temptation to spend your evenings and weekends outside in your garden; whether on your own or with your family and friends. As we approach the busiest time for landscaping and highest demand for work, inevitably, the cost of materials increases in April. By planning your new garden before the summer rush, you are guaranteed to secure the best prices and most skilled teams to complete your works without having to break the bank.

Terra Firma Landscapes are committed to unlocking the potential in any garden space and understand the role a well crafted garden can have in making a house a home. Spending your summer in a garden shrouded in both tranquillity and finesse is something Terra Firma can create for you which is why spring is the ideal time to get your job booked in. The foundations of a perfect garden are the materials. Using the highest grade materials comes with a plethora of benefits - from porcelain tiles to cedar fencing, Terra Firma understand products which enhance durability and provide the best finish. Rather than waiting until the summer has arrived, start exploring your options today and secure your new garden at the lowest rates.

Terra Firma Landscapes is committed to delivering the highest level of customer service and elite standard of workmanship. With nearly 40 years of landscaping experience, Terra Firma have honed

their process to maximise customer satisfaction and deliver bespoke designs. After completing an initial enquiry form, each customer is allocated their own personal project manager who oversees the job from start to finish. You will then receive a visit from the manager who will explore your vision and complete a thorough site survey. An initial design will then be sent over for the customer’s seal of approval; once received, your project manager will formalise an itemised estimate and book in a date for the works. Each team is carefully selected based on the skills and requirements of the job to ensure each part of your design is delivered to the highest standard. The team at Terra Firma feel that the quoting journey is as important as the work quality itself as we endeavour to make the entire process as enjoyable and secure for the client as possible.

“With nearly 40 years of landscaping experience, Terra Firma have honed their process to maximise customer satisfaction and deliver bespoke designs”

Our ethos at Terra Firma centres around client satisfaction, and we are confident in our ability to form relationships based on trust and reliability. Our company values permeate every aspect of our service and we pride ourselves on our integrity, honesty, communication and customer service. Listening to each of our clients and treating every job as individual has catapulted Terra Firma to the top of the landscaping arena. By following a simple strategy and offering a consistent service – no matter the size of the job – we have an extensive portfolio of extremely satisfied customers and are always looking to add to it.

We are also able to advise on current trends which are proven to compliment any space. Since the dreaded lockdowns of 2020, outdoor kitchens have exploded onto the scene. Whether you envisage home cooked pizzas in a stone bake oven or chopping up fruit for your cocktails, we can help you to enhance your cooking potential by factoring this into your design. Feedback from our customers

has suggested those who have opted for an outdoor kitchen unit can fully immerse themselves in their garden environment and save on the cleaning indoors! Terra Firma can explore a variety of options for outdoor kitchen units which may include built in barbecues or Argentinian grills, wood fire and gas pizza ovens or beautifully crafted work tops using the finest granite, quartz or porcelain.

Every garden has the potential to become an idyllic Eden and with the help of the team at Terra Firma, we can make yours a sanctuary for summer. Our team are always on hand to help and we are ready to start planning with you today. Don’t wait until the prices have soared and the teams are booked – take your chance now and meet with a member of the team to fulfil your garden’s potential.

Our offices are open from 8am-5pm Monday to Friday and our team can be reached on 0208 769 7321 option 2. Alternatively, you can email us at info@terrafirmalandscapes.co.uk or view our website at terrafirmalandscapes.co.uk

How to create a family bathroom With bathroom design specialist Ripples

The family bathroom can quickly become the hub of the home on busy mornings before the schoolrun or at bath and bedtime at the end of the day. Here, Designer Matilda, from Ripples Tunbridge Wells, gives her tips for creating a family bathroom with both practicality and style in mind.

Invest in a great shower: A great shower should be at the top of the list for any busy family bathroom. I normally suggest either a fully enclosed shower, or if space allows a large walk-in shower. This ensures that water is contained rather than splashing across the rest of the floor and affecting other members of the family coming into the bathroom later.

Bath time: A bath is usually a key component in a family bathroom, especially when you have young children who primarily bathe. A built-in bath usually works best as kids like to splash! You can also use the bath ledges to store bath toys and keep them within easy reach. At the same time, a built-in bath can be easily switched into a relaxing, grown-up space by hiding all those toys away and using the ledges/alcoves for candles and a glass of wine.

Suss out storage: Like with most areas in a family home, storage in a bathroom is key. I would always look to include storage in and around the basin area, with drawers in the vanity unit to store towels and bathroom products and a mirror cabinet above the basin to keep medicines out of reach from children. Keeping storage solutions wall-mounted is a great idea as it opens up floor space which can then be used for items such as stools, scales and baskets of bath toys.

Add some warmth: When considering heating options for a family bathroom, the ideal combination is underfloor heating as well as a heated towel radiator. Be sure to choose a towel radiator which is large enough to heat the space and to hang each family member’s towel from at the same time.

Formerly the Polhill Arms in Halstead the building was painstakingly restored by the family who own Farningham Oak - long established Kent quality furniture retailers who started their original cottage industry working from an old farm on the edge of the North Yorkshire moors.

“We used to let the customers wander all over our house - except for a couple of rooms and buy anything they wanted and take it away” said Peter one of the Directors - it gave us a great insight into how good furniture is constructed and taught us all about the correct proportions and style which are really important skills and cannot be learned overnight.

This helps us tremendously when customers ask our advice as mistakes can be time consuming and expensive for them. We strive to pass on all our accumulated knowledge to any new members of staff we employ to enhance your shopping experience. It’s always a real pleasure meeting new customers and old who continue to support us.

Evolution 130: Instead of the normal 5-drawer base unit, Schmidt have raised the height of their standard base unit to 78cm (usually 72cm) which has enabled them to fit an extra drawer into the unit. A 6-drawer format means it is much easier to create a streamlined kitchen as well: 1 deep drawer & 3 shallow; 3 medium; 1 deep, 1 medium and 1 shallow – the options are many, but the horizontal lines will flow in perfect symmetry with other units in the kitchen. The extra height unit also caters for the taller profile of most kitchen users today.

3D Fit: With plinth heights from 7cm to 20cm, Unit heights from 52cm to 91cm, 4 different depths,

and bespoke widths to the nearest millimetre, every single inch of available space in the kitchen can be utilised. Whether you are 5 foot nothing, or 6 foot 7 inches – the height can work for you! Schmidt’s standard 67.5cm base unit is joined by 3 other depths: 35, 62.5 and a jumbo 70cm unit – which can achieve up to 26% more storage, and of course more worktop space as well.

Town Garden designs to suit your style

The first is a design for a contemporary four storey East London House. Built on a tight footprint this house has a lower ground floor with a sunken courtyard, a ground floor with a terrace and garden area to the rear and two upper floors. In the lower sunken courtyard adjoining the kitchen is a complementary outdoor kitchen featuring a pizza oven and cosy lounge seating with large attractive urns and Olive trees, all beautifully lit for early evening and night-time soirees.

To cater for larger numbers we also designed a new upper rear terrace, with a grey porcelain tiled seating area, surrounded by parasol trees and cedar panelling to accent the position of the new seating and create a room effect. The feature panels and trees with their evergreen ferns below are enhanced with lighting so entertaining can continue well into the evening.

The second design is for a town house in Tunbridge Wells. Similarly built on four floors the house benefits from a secluded spot at the end of a terrace with a walled garden feel. The lower ground floor is

characterised by a kitchen, dining living space opening out onto the garden via bi-fold doors. The more formal lounge is on the ground floor and overlooks the garden via an attractive balcony. The garden is a shady space and originally featured a moss ridden lawn.

The lawn went and a larger terrace made way for an exquisite table and chairs from The Heveningham Collection. Beyond the sound of water masks town traffic as it bubbles away in the copper coloured circular water feature from Capital Garden Products. This and a splendid painted bench are reflected in a bespoke mirror designed by the Gardenproud team and made and installed by Aldgate Home.

The third design by Gardenproud, which sits in just 30sqm, incorporates a garden folly, a courtyard area, raised planters and a water feature, with hardy tropical plants, all created in a Moroccan style that transports you to the warm hues and blistering heat of Marraketch.

Walk past the giant Trachycarpus fortunei, step over the cool mosaic pool and climb the limestone steps to the Breedon gravel courtyard before finally lounging on the cushioned bench and reflecting on the day in the Marrakech style, balau floored arbour. Enjoy the dappled light and cool surroundings and sip a refreshing glass of green tea with mint.

Raising The Bar in property asset management

Why was Right Home Management Launched?

From our own experience of owning rental portfolios, we found there was a lack of reliable and personable managing agents that you could trust with your most valuable asset. Within the marketplace we could not source a dedicated agent to fully handle the daily stresses of managing rental properties, as well as maintaining the correct level of income from your asset.

From this, Right Home was Born.

Why should a landlord consider Right Home Management?

1. Fully Hands off investment and peace of mind of your portfolio.

2. Right Home will guide you through all the legal obligations and legislation required with renting a property.

3. Right Homes highly effective property management team saves you both time and money in the long run, preventing issues inexperienced landlords may face.

4. Managing property is a time consuming around the clock commitment, with the number of resources required and regular legislation changes, Right Home is best placed to assist you.

What areas does Right Home Cover?

We cover Kent, East Sussex and London

What are our Methods?

Right Homes approach to lettings and property management is quite different to those of our competitors, this stems largely from our background in investing in property and experience owning rental portfolios.

We understand all of our clients’ circumstances vary greatly, for example you may be an ‘accidental landlord’, where the rental of your property is through circumstance as opposed to planned, or you may have specifically chosen the route of additional property ownership to high scaled portfolios.

Therefore, we tailor our service accordingly to the guidance each client requires.

Renting a property holds high regard to us as Asset Management, your property is one of your most valuable investments from which you are seeking the correct returns, as well as capital preservation to appreciation.

We attach equal importance to all the tenants, to ensure they are content, and the home is maintained. We have regular contact with tenants including inspections to ensure any issues are resolved, and therefore not developing into larger more costly issues. A happy tenant will stay longer reducing void periods and ensuring the asset is well cared for.

Create a great team to build a great new home

Are you thinking about building a new home or renovating your existing one? Here are just a few of the people you may need to work with:

• Architects to design and plan the property

• Interior designers to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing space

• Structural engineers to ensure the safety and stability of the building

• Builders to bring the design to life

• Electricians to ensure the safety and energy efficiency of the electrical systems

• Mechanical contractors to install heating, ventilation, AC and plumbing systems

The builder or architect may help coordinate or sub-contract some of these services for you. Essentially, however, you may need to talk to everyone involved – often for an extended period - to ensure you get what you want done when you want it done. Only most people don’t have the time, experience, or expertise to achieve that. It can be essential to have a project management company on your side, such as IQ Property Services. Experts in the art and processes involved in teamwork, they ensure that new homes or

renovations are delivered to the optimum cost and timing, and with minimal stress. Professionals they work with agree:

Amber Blackwell, Managing Director of Built Environment Technology Ltd, said “…clients’ expectations are met at every stage. Every project where we have worked together has been seamless from conception to completion.”

Paul Morrish, Director of OPEN Architects, said, “Great teamwork will ensure the design will be realised as intended, to a very high quality, and the process will be seamless as well as enjoyable! IQ Property Services can help to enrich the experience for the client.”

Tony Cheeseman, Founder and Director of IQ Property Services, says “It’s quite simple. Get the team right at the start, and the project runs smoothly. We like to be involved as early as possible so that we can get to know you and your requirements and thus assist and advise on the concept design, design development, and selection of the professional and construction team.”

IQ Property Services offers three levels of support, from Silver (guidance and support) to Gold and Platinum (which completely takes on your project), and can help you to take your wishes and turn them into reality, smoothly and efficiently.
