This year is a very special year for Chartwell. 2024 marks 100 years since Winston, Clementine and their children moved into Chartwell, and it is also 150 years since Winston Churchill was born.
Winston Churchill’s mother, the beautiful and charming Jennie Jerome, was an American socialite who had met Lord Randolph Churchill at the annual Cowes regatta in August 1873. It was love at first sight and he proposed to her just three days later. The pair married the following spring and by November she was heavily pregnant with their first child. Preparations had been made for the birth to take place at his parents’ home in London, but she went into labour prematurely during a visit to Blenheim Palace. Their baby, named Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill, was born there at 1.30am on 30 November 1874.
Winston Churchill knew 90 birthdays over the course of his long life, and those from his childhood illustrate his early fascination with history, especially
“This year, we are marking his 150th birthday, at the home he loved so much by welcoming visitors to a sparkling celebration which combines Churchill’s birthday with the joys of the festive season”
military history. For his 13th birthday for example, he wrote to his mother, saying “I should rather like ‘Gen. Grant’s History of the American War (Illustrated)’”. This theme remained a constant over the course of his life. Right up to his 90th birthday he was given birthday gifts of histories and biographies, reflecting his love of reading and his unending appetite for a greater understanding of the past.
Chartwell’s collection today houses hundreds of birthday gifts given to Winston Churchill, many of which are on permanent display. From the rug in
the study, given to Churchill for his 69th birthday by the Shah of Persia, to the small silver bowl from Asprey, given to Churchill by his grandchildren, and engraved simply with the ‘Grandpapa, 30 November 1954’. In the latter years of his life, his birthdays became a worldwide spectacle, with press coverage of his cakes and gifts, but even then, he tended to spend the day with his closest friends and family, and often at Chartwell.
This year, we are marking his 150th birthday, at the home he loved so much by welcoming visitors to a sparkling celebration which combines Churchill’s birthday with the joys of the festive season.
Churchill’s Champagne Christmas
Winston Churchill was known for his fondness for champagne, and particularly that of Pol Roger. It’s his love of champagne and the occasion of his 150th birthday that inspires Chartwell’s Christmas decorative theme: Churchill’s Champagne Christmas.
‘I could not live without Champagne. In victory I deserve it. In defeat I need it.’ Sir Winston Churchill. Visitors to the House at Chartwell will be transported back in time to a 1930s Christmas party setting featuring golden garlands, twinkling lights, spectacular Pol Roger champagne bottle Christmas trees and a very special birthday cake.
Throughout the house, knowledgeable room guides will share tales of Chartwell Christmases gone by against a backdrop of festive music. Children, meanwhile, will enjoy a free, family-friendly spotter trail. (23 November to 23 December 2023, 11:30am to 2:20pm, normal admission applies).
For those seeking a more intimate experience of the House at Christmastime, tickets can be prebooked for a guided a tour of selected rooms which are decorated for Christmas (28 November–20 December 2024, weekdays 10:30am to 11:15am).
“I could not live without Champagne. In victory I deserve it. In defeat I need it.’ Sir Winston Churchill”
music,
On selected dates throughout November and December, sing along to Christmas carols with local bands and choirs in the grounds. The first carols take place on Saturday 16 November. The Chartwell Festive Fair, featuring stallholders selling handmade crafts and local produce is another reason to visit (1417 November).
Throughout the festive season, families can explore the gardens at Chartwell with a children’s trail. Pick up a Christmas tree trail sheet from the Visitor Centre then seek out stamping stations to decorate it. (14 November 2024– 5 January 2025, 10am to 4pm, excluding Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.)
Winter exhibition preview
As part of Churchill’s birthday celebrations, visitors to the garden will be able to enjoy a preview of the 2025 winter exhibition featuring neverbefore-displayed images of the Churchill family at Chartwell during the 1927 snowfall (30 November –1 December).
Having your cake too
While a visit to Chartwell’s Landemare Café is a treat at any time of year, visitors on Churchill’s birthday weekend, 30 November to 1 December, can enjoy a slice of birthday cake with a candle to light at home.
Normal admission applies, additional charges for children’s trails with prizes. Please see website for further information and to pre-book tour tickets www.nationaltrust.org.uk/chartwell.

Grandparents play an important role in the lives of their grandchildren often being someone a child can talk to in confidence. They can provide a practical and emotional resource for the child and their parent.
If the child’s parents separate or divorce this can severely impact on the whole family including the grandparents.
It is frequently asked what are grandparents rights when the child’s parents separate or divorce?
Sadly, grandparents do not have an automatic right to contact with their grandchildren.
What then can a grandparent do to retain a relationship with their grandchildren?
1. Try to maintain contact and communication with the parents. Whilst easier said than done avoid taking sides and try to remain as neutral as possible. Offer support to both parents and explain you wish to continue to be part of the grandchildren’s lives. Try to arrange grandparent time rather than grandparent plus mum/dad time. If this does not work, try to maintain appropriate indirect contact by sending age appropriate messages to the grandchildren whether by phone/ message or sending cards and letters.
2. If a child’s parent is already in Court proceedings trying to maintain a relationship with their child, it is often better that his or her parents (i.e. the child’s grandparents) do not get involved as if the parent’s application succeeds the grandparent’s relationship with the child may resume.
3. Attempt Family Mediation. Approach a mediator for a MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting). The mediator will approach the parents and invite them to mediate. If they refuse or if mediation fails, then you can apply to the Court for a Child Arrangements Order.
4. Family Court Application
Only a person with parental responsibility for example a parent, step parent or guardian can apply for a Child Arrangements Order. Grandparent’s rights are limited but they can apply for permission (leave) to apply for contact to a grandchild. In deciding whether to grant leave the Court will consider:
• The grandparent’s connection and relationship to the child.
• The nature of the application for contact (exactly what is being sought).
• Whether the application might disrupt the child’s life to the extent of being harmful to the child’s wellbeing in any way.
The Application is made on a Form C100 with a statement addressing the above factors.
If leave is opposed by one of the parents, there will be a hearing. The grandparent will need to persuade the Court they have a meaningful and ongoing relationship with the grandchild which significantly benefits their life.
If leave is granted then the grandparent can apply for a Child Arrangements Order. The Court may direct a Cafcass Officer prepare a report on the issue of contact and there will then be a further hearing. The Court will always consider what is in the child’s best interests. The child’s welfare is paramount. The Court may have to weigh up whether a grandparent continuing contact will have a negative impact on the rest of the family relationships, but it is only in extreme circumstances a Court will refuse contact to grandchildren.
“Grandparents play an important role in the lives of their grandchildren often being someone a child can talk to in confidence.”

Celebrating Our Korean Exchange Programme
At Bishop Challoner School, we believe in fostering a global outlook among our students, and our recent partnership with Ja Yeon School in South Korea has been an inspiring step in this direction. Through this cultural exchange, our Year 8 and Year 10 students have had the invaluable opportunity to connect with their peers in South Korea, experience each other’s cultures firsthand, and develop lasting friendships.
Recently, we welcomed a group of Year 8 students from Ja Yeon School for an immersive day of learning and fun. Each Korean student was paired with a Bishop Challoner Year 8 buddy, allowing them to share perspectives and form a personal connection. Together, they experienced some quintessentially British traditions, starting with a traditional lunch of fish and chips – a novel taste for many of our visitors! After lunch, our students introduced their Korean friends to the game of cricket, giving them a feel for a sport close to British hearts.
Creativity was also a significant part of the day, with an art lesson where students explored cultural symbols and exchanged ideas on artistic techniques.
“This Korean exchange programme is just one of the many unique
initiatives
we offer at Bishop Challoner, dedicated to enriching our students’ lives beyond the classroom.”
If you would like to find out more about the school, please visit www.bishopchallonerschool.com
To conclude the visit, both schools exchanged gifts, a heartfelt gesture symbolising respect and mutual appreciation. This first-hand experience of each other’s traditions is invaluable in promoting cross-cultural understanding, and we’re thrilled that our students will continue to keep in touch with their new Korean friends. They are eagerly looking forward to the next phase, which will see our students visiting Sa Jeong School in South Korea.
Our Year 10 students have also been engaging with another Korean school through regular Zoom calls, building connections from afar. These online sessions have helped both groups improve their language skills, share school life, and discuss common interests, creating a meaningful bond across continents. In 2025, they will finally meet in person, further strengthening these online friendships.
This Korean exchange programme is just one of the many unique initiatives we offer at Bishop Challoner, dedicated to enriching our students’ lives beyond the classroom. From cultural exchanges to hands-on community projects, we aim to cultivate a diverse, inclusive environment where students can learn and grow as global citizens. We are immensely proud of their enthusiasm and look forward to seeing these connections flourish.
The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions
Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.
Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated –as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.
The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.
“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”
In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.
The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.
Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.
“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.
We speak to Jade McLellan, Head of Senior School, at St Dunstan’s College for our November edition about the school’s forward-thinking education and what sets it apart.
What makes St Dunstan’s College Senior School such a special and unique place?
Whenever people come to visit us for the first time, they comment that there is a uniquely different atmosphere in our corridors – our students are down-to-earth, natural, at ease with themselves and showcase individuality and diversity in all its forms. As a school leader, I have the privilege of visiting many different independent schools and I am yet to find one with the history and heritage of St Dunstan’s, allied to a grounded and community feel. Added to this, there is the beauty of a genuinely cohesive coeducational environment where we see girls and boys on a life journey together, from the youngest age 3 in our Junior School, all the way up to the lifelong boy-girl friendships with which our students graduate from the sixth form. Our girls and boys are confident to speak up in front of one another, to seek understanding about one another’s similarities and differences, which we know is the best preparation for life beyond the school gates.
“It really is true that no two days are the same in teaching and this has certainly been the case in my first term of Head of Senior School.”
St Dunstan’s had become known as one of the most progressive schools in the country. Can you tell us more about this?
Our progressive nature is really underpinned by two key pillars: curriculum and culture. We have designed our own, forward-thinking and innovative curriculum, divided into four parts. Our academic curriculum is a broad Renaissance curriculum, and sees subjects such as Art, Drama, and Religion, Philosophy and Ethics as of equal value to Mathematics or Physics. Parts 2 and 3 are our self-designed Stuart and Usherwood curricula to teach children holistic skills. In Stuart lessons, they might spend one term looking at fake news and the rise of AI and another looking at understanding the menopause. In Usherwood lessons, they might be exploring the five pillars of mental health in September, and then looking at meta-cognition for learning in May. And finally, we have our Forder co-curriculum. In addition to designing a progressive curriculum, we encourage a similarly progressive culture by encouraging students to tackle thorny issues head on. We have a student and staff led EEDI umbrella organisation, The St Dunstan’s Diapason which ensures all forms of diversity are recognised and celebrated, both inside and outside of the curriculum through looking at curriculum plans, policies and assemblies.
How does St Dunstan’s balance academic excellence and the students’ wellbeing?
Holistic care of students has always been at the centre of our ethos and St Dunstan’s was one of the first schools in the country to construct a bespoke Wellness Centre, to bring together support for physical and mental health under one roof. It has been a privilege to develop this support further through our Usherwood curriculum, which ensures students develop the skills to thrive, looking at metacognitive skills for study, the science of memory, adolescent development, neurodivergence and how to seek support for common mental health concerns. Children are happy when they are academically thriving and are supported in their studies – their teenage brains are primed for learning. The key is to talk honestly about the pressures that young people are under in today’s society, rather than brush them under the carpet. Peer-to-peer support is also hugely beneficial, and we are very grateful to our sixth formers, who prepare videos and lead assemblies to speak with younger students to teach them study skills and assuage any concerns about tests or exams.
The co-curricular programme at St Dunstan’s is part of the school, can you tell us more about this and why it’s so important?
Our school motto Albam Exorna asks children to take up the blank coat of arms we give them and fill it with their own passions and interests. Nowhere is this more apparent than in our Forder co-curricular programme. We offer 200 activities each week from ghost stories club, motorsport club and “philosophy through Harry Potter” club, to orchestra, climbing and resilience training. We also have a flagship sports partnership with Chelsea FC who train St Dunstan’s girls’ and boys’ football teams but also children from our local community. Our pastoral teams oversee participation in the Forder programme and are careful to ensure students are taking up a healthy balance of high and low energy clubs!
“Our school motto Albam Exorna asks children to take up the blank coat of arms we give them and fill it with their own passions and interests.”
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I think most people in teaching enjoy the forging of relationships with a diverse range of people, both young and old. This month I have enjoyed having lunch with our new Year 12s, where we discussed the vagaries of imposter syndrome, learning the names of our friendly new Year7s who always say hello in the corridor and making nitrogen gelato with Year 8 and 9. I have also welcomed a number of new teachers to the organisation, both brand-new to the profession and experienced and am training a colleague in their first ever senior leadership position. I have met countless parents, both current and prospective and have had so many interesting and invigorating conversations with them. It really is true that no two days are the same in teaching and this has certainly been the case in my first term of Head of Senior School!

Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery, Dulwich, celebrated 500 years of Black Music with a ‘Beyond the Bassline’ themed day on Friday 11 October 2024.
As part of the school’s We Are Rosemead EEDI initiative, which places a focus on fostering Equality, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion within our school community, Rosemead enjoyed a vibrant and uplifting day celebrating Beyond the Bassline: 500 Years of Black Music. This event brought together children, staff, and guest speakers to celebrate the profound impact Black music has had on global culture and history, connecting Rosemead’s curriculum to this rich legacy.
Speaking about the event, head Graeme McCafferty explained: ‘We were thrilled to welcome two dynamic guest speakers, David Kadamukasa and CeCelia Wickham-Anderson. David, our very own cellist, captivated our children with fascinating insights into his journey through music sharing stories and songs from his past.
‘CeCelia Wickham-Anderson, a legendary vocalist and educator, brought energy and passion to the day through her vocal warm-ups and singing sessions. She led the children in a series of incredible vocal exercises, demonstrating the power of music as a universal language that connects us all. The children were enthralled by her warmth and expertise, and their voices filled the school with beautiful harmonies—a highlight that left everyone buzzing with excitement.’
Graeme added: ‘Celia educated us all, sharing songs from music’s roots in African traditions to its influence on genres such as jazz, reggae, and hip-hop. Her talk offered a powerful reminder of how Black artists and communities have shaped the soundtracks of our lives.
‘In addition to our live guests, we were delighted to receive messages of support from two influential figures in the music industry: Mark De Lisser, a celebrated vocal coach and choir director, whom some of you may remember as our guest speaker at our end of year celebrations in 2022, and the Grammy award-winning artist Ella Mai. Both shared words of encouragement with our children, reinforcing the importance of believing in their talents and staying connected to their cultural heritage through the arts.’
The celebration was more than just a musical experience; it was a key moment for Rosemead’s ongoing efforts to celebrate the diversity within the school community and to inspire children with stories and perspectives from different cultures. The event also reflected the heart of the We Are Rosemead initiative, which is dedicated to creating a school environment where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued for their unique contributions.
Beyond the Bassline helps us nurture a deeper understanding of the world around us, teaching our children not just about the past, but about the importance of inclusion, respect, and unity in shaping the future.
“The celebration was more than just a musical experience; it was a key moment for Rosemead’s ongoing efforts to celebrate the diversity within the school community”
Last month, Rosemead was delighted to find out it has been nominated for two awards at the upcoming ISA Awards in November. The school has been shortlisted for Innovation in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and for Junior School of the Year. Rosemead is also celebrating after a visit from the Good Schools Guide earlier this year. ‘We think Rosemead is definitely ‘one to watch’ as it carves out a specific niche in this corner of London,’ the review explained.
In June, the school was also delighted to receive an award at the prestigious Education Choices Award, winning for best Improvements in EDIB (Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging).

One of the many things that makes Bickley Park so special, is our diverse and inclusive school community. Many people comment on how our warm and friendly, family feel is enhanced even further because it brings together such a rich variety of people from different faiths, cultures and backgrounds.
heritage or that says something about where in the World they are from. They can also bring in an item to show and tell in class with their peers and teachers.
From Art and Music to History, English, Dance and Drama, the day is spent reflecting and celebrating the strength in our diversity. A particularly uplifting moment this year was two staff members teaching Year 7 and Year 8 an Indian folk dance called ‘Dhandiya’ which they learnt expertly and enjoyed sharing with younger members of the School.
It is important then, that this key aspect of our community is recognised, nurtured and celebrated whenever possible, across the whole school.
Our annual World Heritage Day takes place in October and this year, as ever, it was such a joy to celebrate the diversity of our school and share in our many different cultures.

Preparing children to reach their potential Community and kindness is very much part of our wellrounded learning experience at Bickley Park which encompasses Academics, Arts, Community, and Sports and Outdoor Learning. Together these ‘Four Quadrants’ arm our pupils with skills for life: a love of learning; the ability to communicate confidently; the desire to contribute meaningfully to society and show initiative, resilience, teamwork, and the confidence to take risks.
It is this firm commitment to all-round success which led the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) judging Bickley Park as ‘excellent’ in all areas in March 2023, the highest possible grading for an Independent School.
But don’t just take my word for it – come and see for yourself. I would love to meet you and show you around.

“This is a place of joy and scholarly wonder. Of curious minds and endless discovery. Where the sound of music fills cloistered walkways and beautiful spaces inspire. This is a place beyond compare”.
One cannot help but be captivated by the exquisite setting of The King’s School, securely nestled in the Precincts of Canterbury Cathedral. The School’s connection to the Cathedral gives it a unique spiritual core, encouraging quiet reflection and appreciation of the non-material.
Against this historic backdrop, King’s is a school moving forward, seeking to develop the ‘whole person’ and instilling in its pupils strong values, a global outlook and an openminded approach. Complementing the tranquility provided within its ancient walls, the School sits at the heart of a bustling medieval city through which pupils move to lessons and activities, giving it a university feel and a connection to the world outside.
King’s prepares its pupils for beyond school through a parallel focus on academic and co-curricular excellence. While the School
offers one of the broadest curriculums of any school, including over 30 subjects at A-level, it also offers a brilliant enrichment and extension programme. Creativity and confidence are nurtured and the co-curricular offering is enormous. No matter their interests, pupils are supported to develop their passions, and there are activities going on in every corner of the site almost every minute of the day, further demonstrated during the spectacular King’s Week Festival. Held every year since 1952, King’s Week occupies the final week of the Summer Term with over 200 events that showcase the pupils’ creativity and talent in music, art, dance and drama.
Co-education at King’s has been firmly established over several decades, and pupils, both boarders and day (ages 13 – 18), join from across the UK and around the world. Junior King’s, (for ages 3-13), set in a stunning eighty-acre countryside location just outside Canterbury, has full boarding from Year 5 upwards and offers natural entry points at Nursery, Reception, and Years 3, 5, & 7.
Open Days, held each term, are an ideal occasion to explore the opportunities on offer at King’s and Junior King’s. Come and see for yourself why The King’s School Canterbury really is a community like no other.

Your local store for all outdoor clothing for the whole family, plus shooting accessories, leather goods, dog training equipment, and much more.
wner, Gail Thomas, explains how she got involved in this thriving business based in Badlesmere, just a few miles from Lenham on the Ashford Road.
Gail says: ‘I live at Eastwell Park, where my partner is the head keeper. Originally I was working for a national house builder selling houses but took voluntary redundancy. ‘
‘Enjoying a brief period of being a lady of leisure, I popped into a local shop, the Kent Wool Growers, for a pair of Wellington boots. Whilst there trying on boots, I chatted to the assistant who told me he had just got himself a new job and
would be leaving. He then mentioned that they hadn’t filled the vacancy and that the job would be perfect for me!
And so I ended up working for Kent Wool Growers for 7 years; a great place, very interesting and with great customers, fantastic characters and never a dull moment. This is where I learnt all about clothing, footwear and – most importantly – good customer service.
Chatting to a friend whilst having lunch in my local, I mentioned that I might like to go it alone and open my own shop. She then told me about possible premises that were only a few miles from home! The very next morning I viewed and secured it straight away. So started the ‘In The Country’ venture here in Badlesmere. Over the years I have added to the stock and am proud to say, I offer a fantastic range of clothing, footwear and accessories for men, women and children – oh! And mustn’t forget the dogs!
The shop has become a thriving business and has been open for over 8 years now. I can honestly say it was the best decision I have made and have never regretted it for a moment.’

Everyone knows that the best gifts come in the smallest boxes.
When it comes to Christmas gifting, we all want to get it right. To pick that special something that is going to be treasured forever and not relegated to the bottom of the jewellery box.
KATA Jewellery are the perfect place to find that forever treasure for your special someone.
Their ready-to-wear collection pieces, which are all beautifully handcrafted in their in-house workshop, are a treasure trove of delights.
When I recently visited, I chose a few special pieces to add to KATA’s ‘Christmas Wish List’ – a little red book where they can note your chosen items and then when your special someone comes in, they can helpfully guide them to your ideal gift.
I chose a pair of their glinting Aura earrings (with beautifully cut gemstone drops); a gorgeous Tourmaline gemstone bracelet, and one of their signature Halo Rings – fingers crossed one of those is waiting under the Tree!
When I asked Jennifer Kata which was her hotly tipped Christmas Gift for the season, she immediately said their Juno Hoop Earrings – why? Well, what’s not to love. They are the perfect everyday wearing with such a gracefully elegant shape and provide a luxurious feeling for special occasions. You can also add on their Juno Ear Pendants –detachable drops that instantly transform your Juno Hoops into a completely new pair of earrings. From
pearls to faceted gemstone drops – you really could have a whole collection! Perfect for future gifting!
For those who want to really create something special, KATA Jewellery, also offer a bespoke service. Handcrafting a special piece of jewellery that is just for you – such a personal gift that would make opening the littlest box under the Christmas Tree even more thrilling. But do get in quickly though, depending on the design, it can take around 3-5 weeks to create.
KATA Jewellery is much more than a jewellery shop. When you manage to tear your eyes away from their gorgeous jewels and cast your eyes upwards, you will realise their walls are adorned with amazing original artworks. KATA host 3 exhibitions a year, each with two local artists and have a wide range of originals, framed and unframed prints & cards available to take home.
The most wonderful time of the year is almost upon us! I hope for you it is full of joy and sparkle!

Imagine the freedom of not having to think about hair removal. Whether you pluck, wax or shave your unwanted hair, the routine can be tedious and it’s never ending!
Laser hair removal offers a gentle, permanent solution that’s suitable for anywhere on the body and face. At Melior Clinics, we’re delighted to bring Cynosure’s advanced light-based laser technology to our Sevenoaks clinic in Dartford Road.
How does it work?
Laser hair removal targets potent laser light directly into the melanin at the root of a hair follicle. The heat generated disrupts the cells, inhibiting hair growth. This revolutionary and gentle technique reduces hairs in both quantity and thickness. Over a course of treatment, they become virtually invisible.
The technology includes adjustable settings for skin tone and hair colour to ensure treatment is effective for each individual patient.
Why a course of treatment?
Hair in the treated area will start to fall out 7 to 21 days following treatment. But to understand why a course of treatment is needed to achieve permanent results, it’s helpful to know how hairs grow.
At any point in time, some hair follicles are in their growing phase, some are ‘resting’. Laser hair removal is most effective when hair is actively growing because more melanin is present to absorb the laser light.
A course of 6 to 8 treatments ensures that as many hairs as possible are treated during their growth phase.
The perfect season
The joy of starting treatment now is that you can complete your course by the spring or summer - just in time to enjoy smooth, hair-free skin during the warmer months.
Less sun exposure means your skin is more suitable for treatment. Plus, laser-treated skin is initially more sensitive, so avoiding the sun post-treatment is important.
Start your journey to smooth skin
If you would like to talk to our expert practitioners about laser treatment, we offer a free initial consultation to discuss your desired results and make sure the treatment is right for you.
Right now, we’re offering 50% off all courses of laser hair removal treatment for a limited time. Plus, all new patients receive 10% off any treatment at Melior Clinics. Please quote SEV15 when booking your consultation.

Everyone Active, which operates Sevenoaks Leisure Centre in partnership with Sevenoaks District Council, has established itself as more than just a swimming school – it’s become a cornerstone of community fitness and youth development.
Long-term success stories are emerging from the programme. Adam Jaworski, a local parent, credits the centre’s approach for his son Shane’s remarkable journey. “From his first lessons at just 4 years old, Shane developed a genuine love for swimming,” Jaworski explained. “Now 18, his water confidence and technique are a direct result of the centre’s professional coaching.”
Sue Moore-Fay, another local parent, highlights the social benefits. “Beyond technique, the lessons have given my daughter Vivian a chance to build stamina and make friends outside her school circle,” she said.
“We are a small, loyal team that put our swimmers first,” says Mark Horne, Swimming Coach and Swim Manager at Sevenoaks Leisure Centre. “This allows us to not only know all the children by first name, but also the parents, achieving a family-first approach. It’s completely natural for parents to be nervous for their child to begin swimming lessons but, as not all children learn at the same rate, we adapt our lessons as needed for each child, suggesting one to one sessions if needed.
“Swimming is not only a great form of low impact sport for people with a wide range of conditions, but is one of the most important life skills we can teach children - not only as a very inclusive sport, but as a safety skill which will stay with them for life.”.

Autumn is the season when nail designs come into their own. Perhaps with more time to spend inside, cosy sweater weather and Halloween festivities on the horizon, now is the perfect time to try a new mesmerising mani.
This autumn calls upon burgundies, chocolate brown, burnt oranges and deep earth tones. Yet, for the more daring among us, 3D details and stiletto pointed tips are trending again: perfect to dress up any autumn nail look.
We hear from celebrity manicurists on the top autumn manicures you should try this season.
Plums, aubergines and burgundies have been trending this season – but this palette is certainly not confined to clothes. When it comes to nails, ‘black cherry’ seems to be reigning supreme this autumn. “Dark, gorgeous shades such as espresso, black cherry and deep moody greys are the colours du jour this season, direct from New York and London Fashion Weeks,” says Robbie Tomkins, celebrity manicurist to the likes of Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer and Olivia Colman. Black cherry treads a fine line between being deep but not too deep: a combination of burgundy with a touch of dark chocolate. Just as the name of the trend suggests, black cherry nails are inspired by the sweet fruit, and are a low-maintenance and sexy look to sport this season.
October is seeing an increase in popularity of the aura nail, says Tomkins, thanks to the trend’s versatility and moody ambience. “Aura nails are back, and with the help of any eyeshadow palette and a matte topcoat, they can even be achieved with normal nail polish,” says Tomkins. According to Tomkins, the trend is perfect for those wanting to experiment at home without having to go to the salon. “To achieve the look, just paint on a thin base coat, two coats of your favourite colour, and finish with a matte topcoat. Wait at least an hour for this to dry, then using a sponge applicator, gently apply a little of a contrasting colour of eye shadow to the centre of the nail, and finish with a glossy top coat.”
When it comes to shape, the clean-girl, short and neat nails are out. For this autumn, the longer nails are back in. If you’re wanting to achieve long, strong nails without using acrylics, Tomkins recommends investing in at-home treatments.
“Invest in a quality nail strengthening treatment, such as Protein Formula Strengthen Treatment.
“They have four different formulas altogether, each targeting specific nail issues, and the brand has created an online nail diagnostic quiz to tell you which one would suit you best.”
This season’s trends aren’t all smooth and simple however, for those wanting to make a statement, jelly-like details and embellishments are making waves online, especially when it comes to celebrity manicures. “It’s the perfect way to add personality and glamour to your nails for a special occasion,” says Lily Collins’ nail tech at Paint Nails London, Angie Campbell. “This is the trend for anyone who loves eye-catching nails that shift and change with the light. The translucent nature of jelly nails feels fun and fresh, and is the perfect antidote to grey autumn days.
– Keep it local for everything house and home –
As darkness draws in, and with a renewed focus on the ambiance and feel of our homes, lighting design is under the spotlight, shaping the atmosphere in ways that go far beyond pure illumination. As technology, craft and imagination intersect, lights are now so much more than just functional – they have become statement pieces that reflect individual style and set the tone of a space. From sculptural forms that demand attention and create drama to calming designs that draw on the home’s ever-increasing connection to nature, lighting is evolving to enhance not just how we see a room, but how we experience it.
For 2024, lighting trends are pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation, with an emphasis on unique forms, expressive design and a contemporary connection to nature. Whether it’s bold, futuristic structures or a spectrum of colours from dramatic to calm, lighting has become an art form in its own right. As the design world increasingly moves towards curating spaces that feel personal and meaningful, lighting has evolved into an essential tool to transform a space from
every day to exceptional – and not only with luminescence. Here’s where contemporary pendant lights, table lights, floor lights, wall lights and more are heading.
Sleek materials like glass and metal often define lighting design, but the introduction of timber brings a soothing warmth, infusing nature into the modern home. Juxtaposing the soft pattern of grain and timber’s alluring organic texture with modern technology creates a captivating balance between nature and innovation. One element feels artisanal and ancient, the other, precise and industrial. Together, they form a fusion that feels both timeless and forward-thinking, inviting us to bask in the tactile beauty of the natural world alongside the precision of contemporary design.
“The introduction of timber brings a soothing warmth, infusing nature into the modern home”
Clear bulbs? Not anymore. Modern designs favor opaque, misty, white-toned glass, emitting soft, diffused light that transforms a room into a serene, tranquil haven. The subtle white-ness adds understated elegance while offering space for
experimentation. Oversized and artistic, these glass bulbs, often perched on minimalist bases, seem to defy gravity, creating focal points that elevate a room’s ambiance. It’s all about the mood they set, rather than their understated aesthetic appeal.
Is it a bird? A plane? No, it’s a sculptural designer floor lamp. Lighting is evolving beyond function, prioritizing bold, artistic statements over pure illumination. Gone are the days of task lights—now, freestanding lamps embrace originality and creative form. From gravity-defying designs to totem-like structures, lighting pushes boundaries, transforming into art pieces rather than mere light sources. Expect ever-bolder designs as our perceptions of what a lamp should be continue to shift.
The pastel lighting colour of the moment? A delicate rose pink takes the spotlight, adding subtle, sugary charm to interiors. This nearlyneutral tone brings playful sweetness without overwhelming, blending effortlessly with white or clear glass. Often featured in pared-back shapes or on smaller accents, this soft hue shines with understated whimsy, transforming lighting into both functional pieces and artful statements that sprinkle spaces with joy.
Today’s pendant lights shed utilitarian vibes,
favouring elongated, eye-level designs that illuminate entire surfaces—ideal for dining tables or islands. These streamlined pieces replace rows of matching pendants, cutting back on ceiling support and wiring. Designs range from minimal, thin lines to thicker tubes, with options for ornamental bulbs and shades. Efficient-yetbold, they balance simplicity with unexpected details, playfully breaking from uniformity to add personality and brightness to interiors.
This season, honeyed tones take the spotlight in lighting design, casting a soothing glow even when switched off. These rich, golden hues evoke sunset warmth, autumn leaves, and candlelight, infusing spaces with natural comfort. Modern pieces feature all-over golden finishes, often in smooth, rounded shapes reminiscent of honey dips. Large or subtle, honey-hued lights bring an organic, nature-inspired touch indoors, exuding a golden warmth that feels timeless and serene.
Seeking colourful, modern lighting with punch? Primary tones – pillar-box red, sunshine yellow, Yves Klein blue – are ideal. These bold brights demand attention, each adding drama and energy; combine all three for a dynamic, lively atmosphere to invigorate any room. Designs range from chunky, commanding forms to sleek, understated shapes that showcase colour in subtler ways. Primary-coloured lights add personality and flair, serving as eye-catching, conversation-starting focal points and practical sources of illumination for a vibrant, audacious mood. chaplins.co.uk

Be bold with a trend-led look or keep things classic with a timeless scheme?
Designer from Ripples Tunbridge Wells, Matilda, gives her thoughts on whether trend-led or timeless designs are best when it comes to bathrooms.
Trend led
Historically, bathrooms were driven by functionality rather than style and luxury, however, today’s bathrooms are all about merging all these elements to create a fun, stimulating and personalised environment in which to spend time. A bathroom should reflect your unique individuality and flair by including a range of materials, colours and textures and shouldn’t be restricted by the status quo of a ‘timeless’ design.
be a safe option, however, it doesn’t have to be bland. Marble, for example, is an ageless material but it can also be bright and bold and can add interest and colour to a space. Equally, a rolltop bath in copper or tin is a classic choice but can also create a big style statement within your room, making the space anything but dull.
As a designer, developing a scheme based on trending concepts can be incredibly exciting for Jo, allowing her to explore her client’s personality and incorporate it into a one-of-a-kind space. Her favourite way to embrace trends within a bathroom design is through tiling, with a feature tile being a fantastic way to introduce a popular colour, texture, or pattern. By interestingly configuring tiles, you can create a look which is unique to you, even if you’re using the must-have tile of the moment. You can also incorporate trends through painted furniture or even a painted bath, allowing you to embrace the most sought-after colour.
Timeless
Some people might consider a timeless style to
With a timeless design, it is all about focusing on high-quality products that are known for their longevity rather than popular fads which can quickly date. Investing in quality sanitaryware and classically shaped brassware will ensure your bathroom will not only stand the test of time but will always remain in style. Brassware finishes such as chrome and brushed nickel might not be the newest on the market, but the beauty lies in how understated they are and the elegance they can bring to the room.

Giving your kitchen a vintage look doesn’t mean compromising on practicality.
This kitchen in Greenwich, handmade by Great British Kitchens & Interiors, is a perfect blend of mid-century chic and contemporary living.
Social priorities
The overarching aim for this kitchen was to create a design that would have socialising at its heart.
The central island is the hub, with space for breakfast, casual dining or homework.
White gloss, flat panel cabinet doors reflect the pure white of the ‘Alpine Shimmer’ quartz countertops, and fresh white décor. This provides the perfect complement to the natural oak Shaker wall units and display doors.
Features such as Amerock ‘Esquire’ stainless steel bar handles and open shelving give a nod to vintage styling.
60s vibes
The reeded glass doors create a distinctive feature in this kitchen. The reeded, or fluted, glass gives interest and a feeling of light, but it’s opaque enough to only see an impression of the contents, maintaining the clean lines of the overall design.
The bespoke cabinetry carcasses are constructed from Kronospan ‘Alby Blue’. This contrasting interior colour adds an extra touch to the oak cabinetry that particularly sets off the glassware in the tall cabinet.
The unique textured island panels are Finsa’s Mojave design, they bring an elegant contrast to the otherwise sleek surfaces.
Not only does the under-island lighting fall on the texture to create depth and interest, the wave design complements the reeded glass to create a cohesive feel.
The island contains a sleek BORA Pure hob with its integrated extractor. Twin Miele ovens – a single oven, and combi oven with microwave – giving them flexibility and convenience.
Their Quooker Flex tap gives them cold, hot and boiling water in one tap and incorporates a pull-out hose for convenient reach around the sink.

Embrace the elegance of wood with Schmidt’s new Bossa Nova collection in black lacquered oak veneer
French interior expert Schmidt has unveiled the perfect collection that blends the elegance of wood with their new Bossa Nova collection in black lacquered oak veneer. Both trends fit easily into contemporary and classic interiors.
The new Bossa Nova kitchen collection is made for socialising and entertaining with an extra-large island for food prep, cooking, chatting and casual dining. Big enough for all the family as well as friends dropping by for coffee, lunch or dinner, it’s also ideal for home working and homework, taking centre stage in this light, bright and inspirational space that’s full of charm and character.
Ideal for minimalist schemes and décors, Bossa Nova includes a variety of feature units and space-saving storage that make this kitchen design really stand out from the crowd. The glass-fronted display units for instance are right on trend and are more practical than open shelves, as they offer an elegant and ordered way to tidy away crockery, cookware, glasses and more, protecting them from dust and dirt while still allowing quick and easy access when needed.
The units also look stunning after dark, as they can be illuminated from within to make a feature out of the dinnerware, ceramics and accessories inside. Schmidt is also an expert in designing storage to
tailor for every culinary need. The tall larder unit for instance has strong and sturdy pull-outs that easily take the weight of heavy bottles, bags, jars and tins while drawers with wooden interior fittings keep cutlery, knives and utensils organised and within easy reach. Schmidt’s larder comes as an extra deep unit - 62.5cm – giving an exceptional 26% extra storage space over other larder solutions. Bossa Nova offers so many opportunities for customisation and a kitchen designed to suit every need. Glass-fronted units for instance can be added to a recess within a bank of cabinetry to create dresser-style storage while bi-fold doors can be used to conceal a coffee station or breakfast cupboard.
Designing and building your dream home is a journey best undertaken with the guidance of experienced professionals.
Tony Cheeseman, Founder and Director of IQ Property Services, is one such expert. In a recent interview on the Bromley Buzz podcast (available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Audible, etc.), Tony shared his insights on how IQ Property Services helps clients transform their home aspirations into reality.
“IQ Property Services will guide you from the moment you decide to refurbish a house or build a new one on a plot, right through to the day you receive the keys and step into your beautiful new home,” Tony explains. “It’s an exciting journey, but it’s essential to have the right advice along the way, and that’s where we come in.”
He emphasizes the importance of understanding the “unknown unknowns” that often arise in these projects. “We guide you through the process, helping you avoid the pitfalls that can occur. From the outset, we sit down with our clients to discuss their wish lists. How do they envision living in their home? What are the key functions and features they desire? This initial step is crucial in shaping the design and infrastructure of the house to meet the client’s vision.”
Tony advises partners to develop their wish lists separately to ensure all individual desires are captured.
“Understanding each person’s unique vision allows us to create a home that truly reflects their dreams.”
IQ Property Services has built a reputation over the last 25 years for turning client wishes into reality with clarity and efficiency. Their long-standing relationships with clients and fellow professionals, like Scott Nicholson of Chamber Furniture in Kent, highlight their expertise. “Their ability to bring clarity to complex projects is invaluable,” says Scott. “They make everything run more smoothly.”

Our magnificent Sandilands project features a one-of-a-kind pool. This project beautifully blends class, tradition, and modernity. We were fortunate to collaborate with many experienced and kind contractors at Sandilands, where everyone pitched in and got involved.
For the most part, this project went smoothly. However, we encountered a challenge within the first week. Being a property situated right on the coast of Sandwich, the water table was a concern. Nonetheless, the architects conducted a borehole test before the construction commenced. The water table was found at a depth of 1.8m, while the pool depth was 1.5m. We did not anticipate this to be a major issue, but we proceeded cautiously and tried to work with the tide. Due to the substantial size of the pool, measuring 15m x 5.5m, the excavation process took a week and was constantly filled and emptied as the water table fluctuated. However,
through persistence, the use of multiple sump pumps, and coordinating with the tide, we were able to make swift progress with minimal setbacks. Moving on to the pool and spa details, the pool is finished in a luxurious Mauritian Silver Shine Slate, complemented by Lava mosaic step details on the traditional curved Roman end. The steps feature 12 mini step lights arranged in an arrow formation leading into the pool. The pool cover is made of Solarpolycarbonate, which increases the pool’s temperature by 3-6 degrees. The pool copings and surrounding area are crafted from a bold cream limestone, which beautifully accentuates the turquoise of the pool.
Not far from the pool, there is a 2m diameter mosaic spa, capable of reaching 45 degrees, allowing you to enjoy the stunning landscapes even in the winter. This spa is paired with a curved, discreet outdoor shower, utilizing the same finishes as the pool and spa.
The entire outdoor area, which was once a tennis court, is a delightful and secluded space to unwind on a hot or cold day. We are honoured to have been contracted for this project and are pleased to maintain the pool and spa on a weekly basis, ensuring that everything is kept to the highest standard and well-cared for years to come.
“Feedback is very positive! We have had a few “gremlins” which I suppose can only be expected in such a large project, but the XL team has been keen to rectify them. The look and feel is excellent,
and currently being heavily used by our children and grandchildren. Thank you XL Pools”

The variety of plan and thickness sizes makes it a versatile choice for all outdoor projects. Additionally, their products come in numerous non-repeating designs, ensuring a unique and attractive appearance. Each piece is coated with a weather and UV-proof finish that remains colour-fast and resists staining, ensuring long-lasting beauty.
One of the standout features of MBI’s products is their innovation. They offer block paving that retains its fresh and attractive look for many years, and walling blocks available in several sizes that can be seamlessly glued together for a tight, all but seamless finish.
MBI’s commitment to sustainability is evident in their manufacturing processes. The factories are powered entirely by on-site windmills and solar panels, reflecting their dedication to green energy. They utilise a proprietary high-strength concrete with low cement content, reducing the environmental footprint normally associated with cement. Compared this to fired clay pavers, which have a significant
environmental impact because require significant gas to fire.
In contrast, MBI’s concrete simply cures and is ready for use, making it an ecofriendlier option.
The ease of installation is another significant advantage.
The unbound laying method allows for rapid installation, often exceeding 100 square metres per day. This process is not only efficient but also flexible, enabling work to continue regardless of low temperatures or rain once the perimeter has been set.
Given these benefits, it’s no wonder that architects and designers in the UK are increasingly turning to MBI’s precision cast products. They provide a perfect combination of beauty, environmental responsibility, and budget-friendly solutions, making it possible to deliver stunning and sustainable outdoor projects efficiently.
Discover the MBI difference and transform your outdoor spaces with their innovative and eco-friendly concrete products. Whether it’s a patio, driveway, path, or pool surround, MBI offers the perfect solution to meet your needs.
