Co-Ed Classes Settle In

It has been a delight to see our new Nursery and Reception girls and boys settling in so wonderfully since the start of term.

Site development over the Summer meant that our Pre-Prep children returned to a brand-new adventure playground - a further enhancement of their stimulating learning environment.

Looking ahead, we now move to Phase 2 of our co-ed development plan, building on our existing co-ed Nursery and Reception. From September 2025 the School will welcome girls as well as boys from Nursery through to Year 3. These year groups will then move through the School.

Our move to co-education gives families the opportunity to twin excellence with convenience, by sending all their children to Bickley Park. When we asked our parents why they chose our school, a number of elements stood out:

Outstanding Staff & Facilities

It is my absolute privilege to lead such an amazing team of talented and caring staff. What’s more, from the purpose-built science labs, art rooms and theatre through to the on-site swimming pool, climbing wall and astro-turf pitches, we are lucky enough to twin great staff with great facilities.

Small Class Sizes and a Family Feel

Our small class sizes ensure that we explore, identify and celebrate the strengths of every child, no matter where they lie. We aim to develop happy children with a love of learning, which is then reflected in outstanding progress. We continue to enjoy excellent results at both 11+ and 13+, confident that the way we teach is excellent preparation for any entrance exam.

Preparing children to reach their potential

Our well-rounded learning experience encompasses Academics, Arts, Community, and Sports and Outdoor Learning. Together these Four Quadrants arm our pupils with skills for life. It is this firm commitment to all-round success which led the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) judging Bickley Park as ‘excellent’ in all areas in March 2023, the highest possible grading for an Independent School.

But don’t just take my word for it – come and see for yourself. I would love to meet you and show you around.

Girls’ Futures Young Women Need Life Skills Now More Than Ever

Gone are the days when a ‘good degree’ and ‘the milkround’ delivered successful employment results. With competition in the top tier of universities growing ever greater and the global economy becoming increasingly competitive, making informed choices and equipping young people with careers guidance has never been more necessary.

According to the GDST Girls’ Futures Research, nationally, 39% of young women have stated that they feel negatively about their futures. This is not surprising given the level of preparedness that is now required by employers looking for the very best candidates.

Whilst parents may recognise the importance of preparation, the world of futures and employment

“Careers cannot be a ‘tick box’ exercise taught by those with a spare period. It must be well informed, personalised, specialised and current”

is fast changing, and guidance is key. Schools must upscale their education to include life skills as well as more individual and knowledgeable careers’ provision. Careers cannot be a ‘tick box’ exercise taught by those with a spare period. It must be well informed, personalised, specialised and current. Technological advances allow pupils access to a wealth of information which can broaden understanding and knowledge; however, the widespread access to software such as ChatGPT is pushing universities and employers to require additional testing to ascertain accurate levels and introduce AI filtering of academic results, experience or key attributes before a candidate even reaches interview stage.

I am committed to opening the eyes and minds

“I am committed to opening the eyes and minds of our girls to the myriad of opportunities and possibilities out there. Children can only aspire to what they know exists; they must see themselves in future opportunities”

of our girls to the myriad of opportunities and possibilities out there. Children can only aspire to what they know exists; they must see themselves in future opportunities. A whole school (4 - 18 years) futures programme, without limits, is key. Though we have seen Barbie the figure skater, rock star or fashion designer, shift to ‘Robotics Engineer Barbie’ and ‘Renewable Energy Engineer Barbie’, women remain underrepresented in senior leadership positions by 4 to 1 (McKinsey, 2023) and, this report highlights, the issue is not so much about a ‘glass ceiling’ as a ‘broken rung’ in the ladder.

Alongside an inspirational, academic education, I believe in equipping young women with ‘power skills’ to navigate the employment world ahead. One young woman I taught recounted a story of new recruits at a top firm being asked how much

of the job specification they felt they could do; she noted that the young men tended to reply that they could do all that was listed, whereas some women quantified what they could do by their areas of previous experience. She recognised the need to project confidence in the workplace, without unwarranted bluster. Power skills should enable more of an equitable field from which to start, instilling an aptitude for problem solving, creative and analytical thinking, networking, presentational skills, business acumen as well as a practical approach to life’s moments of failure.

The World Economics Forum and employment experts state that two-fifths of the core skills workers have today ‘will be disrupted by technological change by 2027’. The IMF recognises that such ‘technological revolution offers much potential to jumpstart productivity and global growth.’ It could also remove jobs and amplify inequality. As educators, we need to start early with informed conversations, to ‘lean in’ and to collaborate, and consider ways to prepare our young people for their futures in a purposeful, not pressurised, environment.

The average graduate is expected to move through up to 12 different jobs in their lifetime. Therefore, to sustain a non-linear career, our young people will need to be lifelong learners; they will need to be ever critical, flexible, proactive and, importantly, connected.

St Dunstan’s

College becomes one of the first schools in the country to receive two ‘significant strengths’ in ISI inspection

St Dunstan’s College, Catford, south-east London, is delighted to announce the findings of its latest inspection from the Independent Schools Inspectorate, carried out in April 2024.

Speaking about the report, St Dunstan’s Head, Nick Hewlett, said: ‘I am absolutely thrilled to share our new inspection report with our community.

‘We are one of the first schools in the whole country to receive two significant strengths, and I am delighted they recognise both our broad, forward-thinking, renaissance education and how diversity is embedded and celebrated in everything we do at St Dunstan’s.

‘The report is testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment of the whole community and I pay tribute to staff, students and our families who make St Dunstan’s such a special and unique place to be. We are truly an independent school like no other, and I am proud of our place within Lewisham and the sector.’

The report praised the broad and varied curriculums on offer to students at St Dunstan’s, explaining: ‘Leaders have put in place an ambitious, timetabled curriculum which provides extensive opportunities for pupils to acquire the broadest of learning experiences. Leaders have taken great care in the design of this multi-faceted programme which is included as part of the school day.

‘There are four separate strands; together these provide the full range of curriculum subjects, an extensive offering of broader learning experiences,

“The

school’s wideranging and imaginative curriculum offers a broad learning experience for all its pupils, developing their breadth of knowledge and understanding wellt”

a programme of teaching skills for the future and one that focuses on building pupils’ wellbeing and self-awareness. The breadth and relevance of this curriculum and leaders’ decision that all pupils participate in these opportunities, is a significant strength.’

The second ‘significant strength’ applauded the school’s dedication to celebrating diversity within the school.

‘The school’s ethos supports leaders in creating a strong community where diversity is celebrated,’ the report found. ‘This works through many facets of school life: through the curriculum, through the varied groups in school, led by pupils which celebrate diversity, and through producing events such as the annual St Dunstan’s festival. All these promote respect and understanding among the pupils for everyone in their own school and in the wider local community. This is a significant strength of the school.’

St Dunstan’s approach to learning was commended in the report, adding it prepares pupils for the future.

‘The school’s wide-ranging and imaginative curriculum offers a broad learning experience for all its pupils, developing their breadth of knowledge and understanding well.’

It adds: ‘Pupils develop their skills, selfunderstanding and aspiration. This approach prepares pupils very well for their future lives.’

The report also praised the St Dunstan’s Diapason which aims to promote and celebrate equality, diversity and inclusion at the College.

‘There is a whole-school ethos and culture of promoting respect, kindness and tolerance amongst its pupils and staff. The school’s leaders have established an approach which focuses on race, sex and gender, sexual orientation, religion and belief and disability and ensures that appropriate representation and respect is allocated to all,’ the report explains.

‘This programme gives opportunities for pupils to champion and raise awareness of different characteristics, and promote respect for all in the community. The pupils’ contribution is a crucial element of this programme. Pupils lead the way with their initiatives, such as their college parliament and the organisation of the annual festival that celebrates identity and achievement and involves the local community. The result is a thoughtful school community of genuine diversity, driven by a joint approach from staff and pupils.’

“They maintain a consistent focus on the school’s five core values of courage, creativity, confidence, compassion and curiosity, within an inclusive and challenging environment”

St Dunstan’s leadership was also praised in the report: ‘Governors and school leaders have a clear vision of what they want the school to be like. They maintain a consistent focus on the school’s five core values of courage, creativity, confidence, compassion and curiosity, within an inclusive and challenging environment. Leaders work successfully to create a school community that works together well to promote the wellbeing of pupils.’

The inspection report comes at an exciting time for St Dunstan’s. This summer, the College celebrated its best A Level and GCSE results in its 136-year history. 88% of all A Level grades achieved were A*B with an outstanding 61% being A - A* and 27% being A*.

Following the historic results, 97% of the cohort will be heading to their chosen destination, which includes 100% success for students holding an offer for Oxbridge, medicine, music conservatoires, art foundation or drama school. Meanwhile, Year 11 students also achieved record-breaking results in their summer examinations. 90% of all GCSE grades were 9-6, equivalent to A*-B, with an exceptional 78% being 9-7, which is A*- A, and 53% 9-8, which is the former A*.

Speaking about the results, Nick Hewlett said: ‘These outcomes truly showcase the St Dunstan’s difference and demonstrate that it is perfectly possible to achieve exceptional academic results within the framework of a liberal, progressive and Renaissance curriculum – one that is bold, ambitious and champions individuality.’

Earlier this year, the College was named Most Progressive School in south-east England at the Private Education Awards and in 2022, was named Independent Senior School of the Year at the Tes Schools Awards, which are known as the Oscars of education.

A ROSY FUTURE!

Graeme McCafferty, Head of Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery, reflects following a triumphant year for Dulwich’s leading prep school.

Rosemead Receives Outstanding Inspection Report

Rosemead Preparatory School was recently recognised with an outstanding inspection report, a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire school community. The report highlighted the school’s commitment to academic excellence, its well-rounded approach to education, and the nurturing environment it fosters for its children. The inspection highlighted our impressive innovative curriculum, which balances a strong foundation in traditional subjects with creative and forwardthinking programs. We were delighted to receive one of the first Significant Strength for an Independent Prep school and in our opinion, the best strength you could possibly be recognised for, a highly customised approach to every pupils’ academic progress. Ensure rapid progress for all our of our children.

Reflections on Over a Year in the Role

We have changed a lot at Rosemead over the 18

months I have been in charge. We have a new Head of Finance, a new Head of Ops, a new Deputy Head Academic too. But our ethos and values have not changed, we are the same school we have been for the past 82 years, just with a very clear direction of what is to come next. Some of the highlights have been our rebranded Values system that now underpins everything we do at Rosemead. This was created by speaking with staff, children and parents about what really makes Rosemead special and building it up in their image. This year we are doing the same with our House provision and pastoral care. Houses in the school named after people that the children have no real connection to and no understanding of how they fit into a modern life or curriculum had to be challenged. Now we have Houses designed by the community of the school that really match what we are trying to achieve. Come and visit us to see more about both of these highlights of the school. Change is never easy but with a growing pupil roll in a difficult climate really emphasising what we do at Rosemead has worked

very well. One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned is the importance of balancing tradition with innovation. Rosemead has a rich history, and preserving its core values while introducing new initiatives, such as our approach to AI and futureready skills, has been a rewarding challenge.

Joining St Dunstan’s Education Group: Benefits for the Community

Rosemead’s integration into the St Dunstan’s Education Group has been a significant development, one that brings a range of benefits to our community. By being part of a broader educational network, we gain access to enhanced resources, shared expertise, and collaboration opportunities that enrich our students’ experiences. Our partnership with St Dunstan’s allows for a more comprehensive approach to education, where we can provide a smoother transition for children moving into secondary education, and we’re able to offer new programs and initiatives that benefit not just our children but the entire Rosemead family. It’s about strengthening our foundation while opening doors to exciting new possibilities for the future. The main benefit for Rosemead families is that now we are a through school up to 18 for those that reach the academic threshold to move to St Dunstan’s in Year 7 while still ensuring we send our children to many other schools in the area. We really are the school that finds the right school for your child and gets them there.

Praise for Rosemead’s Approach to AI and the Future

Rosemead has garnered attention and praise for its forward-thinking approach to AI and preparing children for the future. In today’s rapidly evolving world, it’s crucial to equip our children with the skills they need to navigate and thrive in a technologically advanced society. We’ve integrated AI into the curriculum in a way that complements our traditional subjects while fostering creativity and critical thinking. Our children are not just learning how AI works, but they’re also encouraged to think about its ethical implications and realworld applications in our Philosophy lessons. This focus on future-ready skills ensures that Rosemead children will be well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Our AI use is

well established at the school now with the focus now turning to how we can use AI to help reduce teachers workload and ensure they have more time to spend on working with the children and ensuring our lessons are world class. Alongside our established approaches in the classroom we have introduced Robotics teaching and eSports club to an already forward thinking curriculum offering.

Hopes for the Future of Rosemead

Looking ahead, my hopes for Rosemead are centred around continuing to build on our successes while remaining adaptable in an ever-changing educational landscape. We will build on an already incredibly successful past year where we have been nominated for various awards including, Innovation and Excellence in SEND, two Awards for our work on Equity, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and our most recent nomination of Junior School of the Years. I want Rosemead to remain a place where children, parents and staff feel inspired, supported, and empowered to pursue their passions. As we move forward, I aim to deepen our commitment to innovation—whether through technology, our curriculum, or the development of life skills—while staying true to the core values that have made Rosemead such a special place. Above all, I hope that Rosemead continues to be a joyful, nurturing environment where every child is encouraged to flourish academically, creatively, and personally.

Nurturing Potential, Inspiring Futures Bishop Challoner School Sixth Form

At Bishop Challoner School, our Sixth Form stands out for its unwavering commitment to pastoral care and individualized learning. In an educational landscape that often prioritizes metrics over mentorship, we focus on meeting the unique needs and aspirations of each student, ensuring that they thrive both academically and personally.

The heart of our approach lies in our small class sizes, which foster a close-knit community where every student is valued. This environment not only encourages collaboration but also allows for tailored support, enabling students to explore their interests and strengths fully. Our Catholic ethos serves as the foundation of our values—compassion, integrity, and responsibility—principles that resonate well beyond the classroom and prepare students for success in the professional world.

This year marks a significant milestone for our Sixth Form, with our largest cohort to date. We prioritise student interests by offering flexible subject option blocks, ensuring a personalized educational experience that caters to diverse ambitions. It’s a testament to our dedication that 83% of our Year 13 students achieved their first-choice university destinations this year, with many gaining entry into top universities such as Durham, Kings College London, Sussex, Nottingham, and Royal Holloway. The variety of courses they will undertake—from Engineering to Business, and Illustration to Law— reflects the wide range of talent and ambition within our student body.

We also empower our students through opportunities such as the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which not only enriches their learning experience but also enhances their UCAS applications. Leadership roles—such as prefects and heads of house—allow our Sixth Formers to contribute actively to the school community, creating a sense of responsibility and belonging. Exciting developments are on the horizon with the construction of a brand-new Sixth Form Centre, designed to further enrich the educational experience. At Bishop Challoner, we are not just preparing students for exams; we are nurturing future leaders, thinkers, and compassionate individuals ready to make their mark on the world.

A Truly Special Approach to Education

At Breaside Preparatory School, we believe education is about igniting curiosity and empowering our students to embrace limitless futures.

As we embark on another exciting academic year, we celebrate with immense pride the phenomenal achievements of our Year 6 alumni, who are now entering Year 7 at some of the most prestigious secondary schools both near and far. Our talented pupils have excelled once again, securing remarkable results and offers from renowned institutions, setting them up for success in the next stage of their educational journey. The destination schools our children have received offers from include St Olave’s, Newstead Wood, The Judd, Tonbridge Grammar for Girls, City London Schools for Girls and Boys, JAGs, Alleyn’s, Dulwich College, Bullers Wood and Sevenoaks.

Our pupils have shown incredible commitment, determination, and resilience throughout their time at Breaside. They embraced every opportunity presented

to them, becoming true role models for our younger students. As a school community, we could not be prouder of their accomplishments. Their outstanding results reflect both their talent and achievement, and we are confident their Breaside spirit will shine brightly as they embrace new challenges as they transition into their Secondary School of choice. We wish them all the very best for the future!

Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions you will make, and it’s crucial to find an environment where they can truly thrive. At Breaside, we have built a nurturing ethos that enables every child to be the best version of themselves, both in and out of the classroom.

From the moment children join us in Early Years to their final year in Year 6, our varied and inspiring curriculum creates a foundation of curiosity, resilience,

and independence. These qualities are key as we guide our students through the preparation for Senior School, which can often feel like an anxious time for families. We work closely with parents to support each child in building the skills and confidence they need for assessments, interviews, and open days. Our comprehensive preparation for the 11+ entrance exams is woven into every aspect of learning at Breaside, including timetabled reasoning lessons and taught study skills. In Year 6, we extend this preparation to include critical thinking, presentation skills, interview practice, and regular exam sessions. This ensures that every child is not only ready for secondary school but is equipped to thrive in whatever challenges lie ahead.  Breaside is synonymous with exceptional, holistic education. We equip our students with the confidence and resourcefulness they need to grow, thrive, and succeed in a fast-changing world. Central to our ethos is the belief that learning should extend far beyond the classroom. We foster independence and resilience, encouraging our children to take risks and explore new experiences, each one designed to build on those all-important life skills needed to play an active role in a global world.

Our dynamic curriculum begins the moment children join us in Kindergarten, where we nurture creativity, problem-solving, and a love for learning through a broad spectrum of experiences. From outdoor learning to specialist teaching in music, the arts, and sports, we provide a rich, varied academic programme that promotes both intellectual and personal growth. This holistic approach allows our students to excel in areas like innovation, collaboration, and technology—critical skills for the future.

Beyond the classroom, we offer an extensive range of extra-curricular activities designed to spark curiosity and encourage new interests. Whether it’s Reception children learning Spanish, Year 4 students sharing their coding expertise, Year 6 debating complex philosophical questions, or Kindergarten practising Yoga poses, Breaside provides a wealth of opportunities

Sevenoaks Leisure Centre encourages older adults to stay active

Sevenoaks Leisure Centre is encouraging older adults to enjoy the physical and mental benefits of keeping fit as part of Everyone Active’s Age Is Just a Number campaign.

Managed in partnership with Sevenoaks District Council, the centre offers a range of tailored activities aimed at helping older adults stay physically and socially active.

Everyone Active’s campaign, which runs throughout October and November, highlights the importance of regular exercise in later life for maintaining mobility, strength and overall wellbeing. As part of the initiative, Sevenoaks Leisure Centre is inviting locals to try out various group exercise sessions designed specifically for older members of the community.

Among the activities on offer is Zumba Gold, a gentler version of the popular dance workout that allows participants to have fun while taking care of their joints. The centre also runs Over 55s Badminton, which combines light competition

with a full-body workout. For those who prefer lower-impact options, Aqua Aerobics provides an excellent alternative. Exercising in water reduces pressure on the body, making it easier for those with mobility issues to stay active and build strength.

Staying physically active has numerous benefits for older adults, from improving balance and flexibility to reducing the risk of injury and boosting mental health. But fitness isn’t the only focus - the centre’s classes provide a social setting where people can connect and build friendships.

“Maintaining both physical and social activity is vital for older adults,” says Rob Hutton, Everyone Active’s Activity & Wellbeing Manager in Sevenoaks. “We’re proud to offer a range of classes that help our community stay fit, healthy and engaged.”

Age is truly just a number, and Sevenoaks Leisure Centre is proving that staying active at any age is not only possible but enjoyable. For more information, contact the leisure centre on: 01732 442365

Trend-led vs Timeless

With a Ripples bathroom design specialist

Be bold with a trend-led look or keep things classic with a timeless scheme? Senior Designer from Ripples Tunbridge Wells, Matilda, gives her thoughts on whether trend-led or timeless designs are best when it comes to bathrooms.

Trend led

Historically, bathrooms were driven by functionality rather than style and luxury, however, today’s bathrooms are all about merging all these elements to create a fun, stimulating and personalised environment in which to spend time. A bathroom should reflect your unique individuality and flair by including a range of materials, colours and textures and shouldn’t be restricted by the status quo of a ‘timeless’ design.

“By

interestingly configuring

tiles, you can create a look which is unique to you, even if you’re using the must-have tile of the moment”

As a designer, developing a scheme based on trending concepts can be incredibly exciting for Matilda, allowing her to explore her client’s personality and incorporate it into a one-ofa-kind space. Her favourite way to embrace trends within a bathroom design is through tiling, with a feature tile being a fantastic way to introduce a popular colour, texture, or pattern. By interestingly configuring tiles, you can create a look which is unique to you, even if you’re using the must-have tile of the moment. You can also incorporate trends through painted furniture or even a painted bath, allowing you to embrace the most sought-after colour.

Timeless

Some people might consider a timeless style to be a safe option, however, it doesn’t have to be bland. Marble, for example, is an ageless material but it can also be bright and bold and can add interest and colour to a space. Equally, a rolltop bath in copper or tin is a classic choice but can also create a big style statement within your room, making the space anything but dull.

With a timeless design, it is all about focusing on high-quality products that are known for their longevity rather than popular fads which can quickly date. Investing in quality sanitaryware and classically shaped brassware will ensure your bathroom will not only stand the test of time but will always remain in style. Brassware finishes such as chrome and brushed nickel might not be the newest on the market, but the beauty lies in how understated they are and the elegance they can bring to the room.

Alexander James Interiors

Our Kent Project Wins the International Design & Architecture Awards 2024

We are thrilled to announce that our Kent project has been awarded the prestigious International Design & Architecture Award 2024 in the Luxury Residence - UK category, hosted by Design et al. This honour represents not only a significant achievement for our team but also a testament to the incredible collaboration with our client, a property developer who sought to elevate his personal build with a higher-end specification.

From the very beginning, we were entrusted with a vision that went beyond the ordinary. Our involvement in the project started at the planning stage, which allowed us to provide a detailed architectural specification package that covered everything from bathrooms to flooring, lighting, and interior elements. This early collaboration ensured that every detail of the home was meticulously planned before we proceeded with our full interior design service.

The client’s brief was to create a high-end family home that could also serve as a space for entertaining friends. As the father of two children,

it was crucial that the home felt welcoming and inclusive for the entire family, making the transition into their new home as seamless as possible. We took great care in involving the children throughout the process, ensuring the design reflected both sophistication and the warmth of a family residence.

While the client brought a few ideas to the table and remained actively involved throughout the 18-month journey, they trusted us to develop and expand upon their vision. We worked closely with them, holding regular meetings and providing updates to ensure the project stayed on course while aligning with their goals. This close collaboration was instrumental in the success of the project, as we were able to follow through on all fundamental developments on-site.

This award is not just a win for us but a celebration of the partnership we shared with our client, the dedication of our team, and the collective creativity that brought this breathtaking home to life.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this project! aji.co.uk

“Our involvement in the project started at the planning stage, which allowed us to provide a detailed architectural specification package that covered everything from bathrooms to flooring, lighting, and interior elements”

Unwind, Refuel & Recover

The client is always at the centre of our designs, and this recently completed renovation of a Surrey home was no exception.

The design brief was to create an elegant family home, perfect for modern family living and entertaining extended family and friends.

We remodelled the extensive open plan kitchen to incorporate new glass sliding doors to access the garden, whilst also flooding the room with natural light. Furniture, joinery and lighting design were carefully considered to ensure the kitchen, dining and seating areas all had a distinct identity but also flowed and functioned as an overall space.

The client fell for a deep blue veined marble we presented for the kitchen worktop, and this set the tone for the overall palette. Working closely with the client and Chamber Furniture we designed an unusual double-island layout. Having reduced the available wall space with the introduction of full-height glazing, the islands were used to provide both working area and storage plus, an entertaining space with incorporated banquette seating.

Whilst the kitchen is the star of the room, the extensive bespoke dining table can comfortably seat fourteen and sits below the twinkling light of a bespoke, contemporary chandelier.

Our design throughout the house reflects the young family’s playful approach to entertaining; with areas designed for both adult and child playtime.

The cinema features two rows of adjustable seating,

popcorn machine and hidden joinery bar and sweet storage, all wrapped in dark timber and fabric-panelled walls which also improve the rooms acoustics. By contrast, the playroom is brightly coloured with plenty of toy storage and clear floorspace.

One of the more extravagant and unusual additions to the home, was the golf simulator and bar room. This presented an opportunity for a statement design, and the client was wonderfully relaxed when we presented them with a vibrant red vision for the space. It is always a pleasure when a client trusts in the design process and with all our projects, we hope to bring something unexpected to the client’s vision of their new home.

“Our design throughout the house reflects the young family’s playful approach to entertaining; with areas designed for both adult and child playtime”

CELESTIALLY INSPIRED INTERIORS

The nights are creeping in and darkness is all around – so it’s no wonder our gaze is being pulled upward to what’s going on overhead in the cosmos. The mystery and grace of stars, skies, lunar bodies and their hypnotic arcing movements have descended, bringing a sense of wonder and ethereal beauty into our lives and living spaces.

Fusing circles, spheres and organic forms with metallic finishes, black, white and the odd burst of fiery red, the trend is led by the glowing balls and free-floating formations of lighting, which mimics the soft ambience of distant stars or the phases of the moon. Larger pieces of furniture and accessories are getting in on the act too, with their patterns and colours, as well as extra-terrestrial streamlined and spherical forms.

There are two schools of thought in the celestial interiors trend. Number one is go literal, a la Moooi’s Celestial Carpet by Edward van Vliet which represents the movement of the planets. Inspired by the origins of the universe and the possibility of life on other worlds, it depicts mathematical-style imagery of the universe in soft woven textile. The other take on the celestial trend is more abstract, generally using multiple globular shapes to hint at planetary-style movement and interaction in the way of Cattelan Italia’s Planeta lighting family by Studio Kronos – the blown glass shades of the 1960s-inspired table, ceiling, wall and floor lamps centre around steel frames, each creating a miniature revolving cosmic system.

Approach the trend from a slightly scientific angle, or on a more sculptural level, and either way celebrate the innovative aesthetic of the 1950s/60s space-race with a contemporary minimalism and sleekness. Modern celestial designs feel both organic and futuristic, the copious amount of rounded forms involved creating an atmosphere which is surprisingly calming and tranquil, as well as out of this world. chaplins.co.uk

Stand Out From The Crowd

Embrace the elegance of wood with Schmidt’s new Bossa Nova collection in black lacquered oak veneer

French interior expert Schmidt has unveiled the perfect collection that blends the elegance of wood with their new Bossa Nova collection in black lacquered oak veneer. Both trends fit easily into contemporary and classic interiors.

The new Bossa Nova kitchen collection is made for socialising and entertaining with an extra-large island for food prep, cooking, chatting and casual dining. Big enough for all the family as well as friends dropping by for coffee, lunch or dinner, it’s also ideal for home working and homework, taking centre stage in this light, bright and inspirational space that’s full of charm and character.

Ideal for minimalist schemes and décors, Bossa Nova includes a variety of feature units and space-saving storage that make this kitchen design really stand out from the crowd. The glass-fronted display units for instance are right on trend and are more practical than open shelves, as they offer an elegant and ordered way to tidy away crockery, cookware, glasses and more, protecting them from dust and dirt while still allowing quick and easy access when needed.

The units also look stunning after dark, as they can be illuminated from within to make a feature out of the dinnerware, ceramics and accessories inside. Schmidt is also an expert in designing storage to

tailor for every culinary need. The tall larder unit for instance has strong and sturdy pull-outs that easily take the weight of heavy bottles, bags, jars and tins while drawers with wooden interior fittings keep cutlery, knives and utensils organised and within easy reach. Schmidt’s larder comes as an extra deep unit - 62.5cm – giving an exceptional 26% extra storage space over other larder solutions. Bossa Nova offers so many opportunities for customisation and a kitchen designed to suit every need. Glass-fronted units for instance can be added to a recess within a bank of cabinetry to create dresser-style storage while bi-fold doors can be used to conceal a coffee station or breakfast cupboard.

CASE STUDY

Little Houghton Project

This pool and its surroundings are truly exceptional. The pool is perfectly situated within the property’s grounds, running parallel to the rustic brick wall. Tucked away in a secluded spot, it provides the ideal relaxation area, surrounded by lemon trees, flowers, and wildlife.

After considering several of Aqua Technics pool models, the clients ultimately selected the Aspen due to its generous and sufficient dimensions of 10.8m x 4.0m x 1.5m. The symmetry and simplicity of the pool design were the key factors that swayed their decision. Although not an oversized pool, this model offers ample room for swimming, and the clients also opted for the 180 Hydrostar swim jet to enable on-the-spot exercise. They were drawn to the natural look of the Platinum finish and complemented it with lovely

cream Fossil pearl satin coping around the perimeter and surround. To complete the tranquil ambiance, they included a majestic Bali waterfall feature, providing a soothing natural sound.

The clients had their own team of skilled and friendly workers who were tremendously helpful. They assisted with the tight delivery, navigating through the tall main gates and then helping to offload the pool from the low loader to the dig site. Avoiding the use of a crane proved fortuitous, given the high winds of up to 80mph on the delivery day.

We did encounter a few challenges along the way. The clients were very cautious about any potential disturbance to their beautifully designed garden. By working closely with their team, we were able to protect all areas that might be affected by the construction work, using ground protection mats throughout.

Unfortunately, our electrician fell ill on the crucial day when everything needed to be connected and operational for the clients. Fortunately, the clients had their own electrician who stepped in and completed the task with remote support from our director, ensuring the clients were not let down.

We are immensely proud to have built this pool and had the opportunity to work on such an amazing property. We have created another secluded focal point in the garden that not only the clients but also their guests can enjoy.

Design & Re-Build to Create Your Dream Home

Your dream home is a combination of appearance, inside and out; functionality and feel; and your exact requirements for enjoying what you see as your ultimate comfort and lifestyle.

It is unlikely that you will find such a home, ready-made, for sale on the housing market. That leaves two main ways to achieve the home to which you aspire. One is to purchase land to build it from scratch, or revise and renovate an existing property. There may be limits to a renovation, such as what is feasible based on the existing estate and buildings, and any planning issues and listed status the property might have. Either task can be daunting. As a new build or renovation project unfolds, things can and sometimes do go wrong, and unexpected difficulties occur. Just as with taking care of your own health, where prevention is often better than cure, it is possible to make arrangements so that property projects go smoothly. Again, as with health professionals, expert professionals are there to be called on.

IQ Property Services is a design and build company that manages new home or renovation projects so that they are delivered at the optimum cost and timing. They have the expertise to oversee a new build or renovation project.

“It’s quite simple. Get the team right at the start, and the project runs smoothly”

Tony Cheeseman, Founder and Director of IQ Property Services, says, “It’s quite simple. Get the team right at the start, and the project runs smoothly. We like to be involved as early as possible so that we can get to know you and your requirements and thus assist and advise on the concept design, design development, and selection of the professional and construction teams. The IQ process takes the stress out of managing a project, so clients can go about their daily lives while we handle the details. With regular updates, clients stay in the loop and can guide the project without the hassle of being on-site every day”.

IQ Property Services offers three levels of support, from Silver (guidance and support) to Gold and Platinum (which completely takes on your project), and can help you to take your wishes and turn them into reality, smoothly and efficiently.

Transform Your Outdoor Space with MBI’s Precision Cast Concrete Products

Are you considering a new patio, driveway, pathway, or pool surround? Let’s explore the innovative offerings of one of Europe’s leading manufacturers: MBI, a familyowned Dutch company renowned for its precision cast concrete products. Based just across the channel in the Netherlands, MBI is celebrated for its aesthetic appeal, low environmental impact, and cost-effective solutions.

MBI’s extensive range includes ceramic-faced paving designed for quick unbound installation on a sand bed, like traditional block paving. The variety of plan and thickness sizes makes it a versatile choice for all outdoor projects. Additionally, their products come in numerous non-repeating designs, ensuring a unique and attractive appearance. Each piece is coated with a weather and UV-proof finish that remains colour-fast and resists staining, ensuring long-lasting beauty.

One of the standout features of MBI’s products is their innovation. They offer block paving that retains its fresh and attractive look for many years, and walling blocks available in several sizes that can be seamlessly glued together for a tight, all but seamless finish.

MBI’s commitment to sustainability is evident in their manufacturing processes. The factories are powered entirely by on-site windmills and solar panels, reflecting their dedication to green energy. They utilise a proprietary high-strength concrete with low cement content, reducing the environmental footprint normally associated with cement. Compared this to fired clay pavers, which have a significant

environmental impact because require significant gas to fire.

In contrast, MBI’s concrete simply cures and is ready for use, making it an ecofriendlier option.

The ease of installation is another significant advantage.

The unbound laying method allows for rapid installation, often exceeding 100 square metres per day. This process is not only efficient but also flexible, enabling work to continue regardless of low temperatures or rain once the perimeter has been set.

Given these benefits, it’s no wonder that architects and designers in the UK are increasingly turning to MBI’s precision cast products. They provide a perfect combination of beauty, environmental responsibility, and budget-friendly solutions, making it possible to deliver stunning and sustainable outdoor projects efficiently.

Discover the MBI difference and transform your outdoor spaces with their innovative and eco-friendly concrete products. Whether it’s a patio, driveway, path, or pool surround, MBI offers the perfect solution to meet your needs.
