Tom Leighton
City Constructs Virtual Exhibition at tleighton.com until 12th December 2020
T
om Leighton’s works reveal the poetic beauty that that results from painstaking digital manipulation. Leighton has travelled through Europe, Asia and North America, building up an impressive body of photographic images that he then combines to make fantastical landscapes. The resulting works challenge our perception and test our memory. Do I recognise that building? Where are those mountains? How do I get the measure of this? What are those people doing? Adding to a sense of wondrous unease is the kaleidoscopic effect created by repeated motifs and themes, enhanced by Leighton’s clever use of colour. Subtle mirror images startle us. We look for patterns within the work, mining the minute details for meanings. The landscapes are beautiful, empty and reflective, or populated and celebratory: crowds swell and disperse, evoking both exuberant joy and hidden unease. Crowds fill the spaces Leighton creates, channelled by the architecture. We as viewers look at the scenes from privileged vantage points mainly above the crowds. We are observers and participants, able to take in the images as we wish: we can analyse, search, reflect and wonder. This is an exhibition to marvel at.

new dialogue between the hundreds of photos which are the constituents of each composition, the timing of the original shoots - and the year of completion of each work. In the process, they provide a powerful memory of how the cityscape was, before a time of Covid. For all that we might miss the encounter with work in a physical gallery, there are advantages to curating and exhibiting virtually. Here I have had total freedom of selection, great accessibility and, let’s face it, an easy install! I will also have the opportunity to update the curation and add rooms to make the exhibition evolve, again unique to showing as a digital experience. My work is deliberately sited on the spectrum that stretches

from the virtual to what is real. There is a deliberate relationship between the digital and the physical. Physical places that I visit are digitised in camera and presented as physical works on a wall which are here digitally represented in a virtual 3D space. This is work made before Covid - and becomes particularly relevant now, as our city centres become emptier places. The purpose and use of city space has always informed my work. These are images of people moving in an intricate mass through the city of crowds gathering at iconic landmarks. The exhibition now provides a powerful historical comment on this process in a time of Covid, as social distancing is now applied to environments that were not designed for a luxury of personal space. And just as crowds now become illegal, now you view this exhibition in a space that you need not share with anyone else.
Biography Tom Leighton is an artist, photographer and printmaker. Fascinated by the urban environment, he has photographed and worked with iconic and hidden architecture world-wide. He layers and manipulates images to build increasingly elaborate

megastructures, asking how our cities will cope and change with expanding populations, and how these populations will live and move within these urban centres. He has photographed both ancient cities and the newest cities built on land reclaimed from the sea. Trained at the Royal College of Art, London, Leighton expertly manipulates images to allow us to imagine alternative cities of the present and the future. He seeks beauty in everything, from functional buildings to the most ornate architecture. He repeats motifs in unexpected places, repositions existing structures and contrasts the natural and the artificial: bright city lights set against natural night skies, concrete against greenery, business against eerie nighttime stillness. Leighton asks us to reconsider our cities, what they are and what they might become. He pushes us to notice the beauty inherent in these populated places, the architecture and our place within it. At once futuristic and reflective, Leighton’s work demands multiple takes. Website: tleighton.com Instagram: @tomleightonart Email: info@tleighton.com

Actress and singer Jane Birkin and the former executive chairman of Hermès Jean-Louis Dumas met on a flight from Paris to London. Jane complained that she could not find a bag suitable to carry her belongings and to fit her needs as a young mother. fter sold-out runs in 2018 and 2019, The Great Christmas Feast returns to its London Bridge home for the festive season. Created by The Lost Estate - London’s master experience makers, The Great Christmas Feast transports audiences to the streets of Victorian London and the chambers of Charles Dickens immersing them in the tale of ‘ A Christmas Carol’ through a mix of theatre, live music, Victorian feasting, and Dickensian mixology. The experience is set on Christmas Eve, 1843. Guests are cast as Dickens’ friends and associates, invited to the house to hear a new and as yet unknown festive story, just in case it needs any final tweaks before going to press. As guests are guided to their seats, lodged between the teetering piles of books in Dickens’ study, the writer roams amongst them, wrestling with his opening words. At last, he speaks the immortal line “Marley was dead to begin with…” and so the evening begins. Within minutes it is clear that this is no informal reading. Friends from London’s theatrical community - be it ‘Mr Adams’, Head Technician of The Haymarket Theatre or ‘Maestro Copperfield’ of The Royal Opera House - emerge to work their magic, high-tech gaslights begin to flare with stunning live music, transforming the performance into a rich and immersive experience. In the gaps between staves, a mouth-watering feast appears, designed and cooked by Michelin Star executive chef Adam Gray. With iconic dishes from Ms. Beeton’s Household Guide, street foods from the notorious Billingsgate markets, the menu 3 4 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0

The semi-bespoke design features and choices available are particularly personal to Karen who has sought out external design specialists that offer the same quality, craftmanship and attention to detail that the boats offer themselves. Karen uses all these specialists herself so can attest to their quality. Karen is also passionate about the charities she supports both directly and through the company. One per cent of all UK sales will go to the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust (cornwallairambulancetrust.org) as well as supporting the charity’s soon to be launched 12 Days of Christmas Challenge to raise much needed funds. In the Caribbean, the team will be supporting the Barbados children’s charity naturesfunranch.org.

THE ORCHESTRA OF THE AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT GOES DIGITAL!
T
he Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE) - one of the UK’s leading period instrument ensembles since its formation in 1986 is to launch a digital platform, OAE Player, which will feature over thirty new music performance videos including a masterclass with Mark Padmore. The internet is already a bustling hub of free art that is readily available at people’s fingertips, but the OAE is keen to emphasise the distinction between their free videos on YouTube and the paid content on OAE Player when it launches this Autumn. OAE Player offers the chance to see longer-length concerts and performances, as well as exclusive interviews and insights with wellknown artists. The high definition films on OAE Player will be shot in various locations and presented as a cinematic experience, rather than a simple live stream, including the OAE 2020/21 Southbank Centre Season which will include additional touring footage, historical discussions and rehearsal snippets.
4 0 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0
Annual passes cost £99 and allow the user to access all the videos on OAE Player as well as 10% discount off tickets to select physical events when we can, monthly email updates and world premiere broadcasts. There is also the option to pay-perview and these videos will range between £4 - £7. According to their charismatic CEO Crispin Woodhead, the OAE is delighted to offer this service, and support artists by doing so: ‘Arts institutions shouldn’t have to be apologetic about asking people to pay for online content. Behind the screen, there is still a group of artists working as hard as they would have for a live concert. Great music has always needed and will always need the support of its audience, from the great patrons of the past to today’s fan-base communities. We want people to look, listen, think and then decide what it is to be more than just culture surfers. Now, more than ever, musicians need committed listeners people who have a stake in the arts they love, people who belong to the music as much as it belongs to them, people who will protect and preserve our great artistic traditions for future generations.’ Digital content is not here to replace live concerts confirms the OAE team. Instead, it is an exciting and fresh addition to music-making which has the potential to reach a much broader and more diverse audience than live music ever could. With this in mind, the OAE encourage their audiences to consider the value of digital art and recognise its place in a post-pandemic world. Steven Devine, OAE’s Principal Keyboard who has been heavily involved in the recordings of the first few videos for OAE Player, comments: ‘As the OAE is very much a “live” orchestra we can use all the digital skills we have accumulated during lockdown to enhance our live music experience – perhaps reaching audiences who may not be able to otherwise come to our live performances. I’m very excited that OAE Player will be adding value to everything we do in front of a live audience.’ The launch of its new digital platform comes on the back of another ground breaking move - a first for a British orchestra. The OAE is blazing a trail for Arts and Education with its recent move into Acland Burghley comprehensive school in Camden, North London, allowing OAE’s musicians to live, work and play amongst the students of the school.
For more details go to: oae.co.uk/season/oae-player If you have any difficulties or queries about using the platform, please don’t hesitate to contact the OAE on boxoffice@oae.co.uk

Chilli No. 5 - Hot Sauce Reimagined
Join The Revolution
H
ot sauce has been reimagined courtesy of Chilli No. 5, a new gourmet chilli sauce company. Launched in October, Chilli No. 5 offers a collection of 13 designer hot sauces that not only taste great, but contain superfoods with reported health benefits. Inspired by international cuisines from across the globe, hot sauce lovers can add depth of flavour and heat to a wide range of dishes. Tempting hot sauces include Wicked Wasabi, Perfect Piri Piri, Jamaican Jerk, Sriracha Cha-ChaCha, Heavenly Harissa, Forever Phall, and Chinese Hot & Sour, to name just a few. Each sauce is made with only the very finest ingredients from across the globe, and also features an exclusive blend of five chillies and six powerful supplements – inulin, maca powder, red ginseng, L-Arginine, guarana, and fenugreek. The supplements have been purposefully handpicked due to their wide range of reported health benefits, from helping to boost energy, to aiding weight loss or easing the symptoms of depression and anxiety. Adding further health credentials, the hot sauces also boast a plethora

of superfoods such as black garlic, fresh ginger, nutmeg, and apple cider vinegar. They are also vegan, wheat free, and are free from any artificial colourings or flavourings.
Motivated by the lockdown Chilli No. 5 is the brainchild of Monaco entrepreneur Rumble Romagnoli and superyacht chef Colin Ross. The dynamic duo complement each other perfectly. Romagnoli is an established business entrepreneur and successful marketer for luxury brands, while Ross is a pedigree chef who has catered to the world’s most discerning palates on luxury superyachts across the globe. The inspiration for the brand came during the height of the pandemic. Forced to remain at home during lockdown, Romagnoli quickly became frustrated that he was unable to create the depth of flavours typically found in restaurant dishes. And with lots of hungry mouths to feed – Romagnoli is a father to three demanding underfives – creating tasty, healthy meals at home was quickly becoming a frustrating challenge. It was Romagnoli’s lightbulb moment. “I founded Chilli No. 5 because it was

impossible to find high-quality, healthy, sustainable hot chilli sauces at the supermarket,” Romagnoli explained. “This became even more apparent during lockdown. People were cooking more at home than they had for years and were discovering how challenging it was to recreate their favourite bold flavours.” But, simply creating incredible tasting hot sauces wasn’t enough for the dynamic entrepreneur. “I didn’t want our sauces to be just about incredible flavour,” Romagnoli explained. “I wanted them to be much more than that. I wanted to make sure they were made with only the very finest ingredients as well as being as healthy as possible. So, we made sure to add natural superfoods known to contain powerful antioxidants, along with a selection of supplements. With our designer hot sauces, we aim to offer more for those who wish to lead a healthier and more active lifestyle.”
“It was important to both myself and chef Colin that we not only created tasty and healthy hot sauces, but ones that were packaged in the most environmentally friendly way possible”
Sustainable principles Not only did Romagnoli want to create a luxury hot sauce brand that boasted incredible tasting hot sauces, but he also wanted to ensure that the newly founded company placed a high value on sustainability. Each designer hot sauce is available in an elegant 200 ml keepsake glass bottle, which can be refilled courtesy of lightweight 100 ml recyclable stand-up pouches.
The considerable benefit of glass packaging is that it offers a closed-loop recycling process, meaning it can be recycled again-and-again helping to minimise the use of earth’s precious natural resources. The stand-up refillable pouches are land-fill friendly and 6x more sustainable than a plastic bottle. “We all must do what we can to minimise our carbon footprint and reduce waste,” Romagnoli said. “It was important to both myself and chef Colin that we not only created tasty and healthy hot sauces, but ones that were packaged in the most environmentally friendly way possible.” He added: “In addition to earth-friendly packaging, we have gone one step further by offering a money-back programme to customers who return the refillable pouches or glass bottles, which will then be sent for recycling.” In addition to the full-sized glass bottles and pouches, Chilli No. 5 also offers numerous gift collections, with each sauce housed in a refillable glass test tube, or vial. “Not only are our hot sauce gift set collections a great way to try a selection of our hot sauces, but the vials are also designed to be compact enough to be carried around while on the go. So, with our vials you can always elevate any dish, even if it is a working lunch while at your desk,” Romagnoli explained. Chill No. 5 hot sauces will be sold on the Chilli No.5 website and through Instagram and Facebook, alongside exclusive sauce tasting/gifting collections and merchandising. The sauces are also available through a subscription programme; The Sauce of Life. “Chilli No. 5 is here to make your life more delicious, exciting, and extraordinary,” Romagnoli said “it really is Chilli Saucery. Her resulting mediums include painting, printmaking, drawing and sculpture and incorporate both traditional and contemporary practices. How An Art Consultant Can Add Value By Louisa Warfield Art Consultant or three key moments in their life (when they renovate, when they buy a bigger house, when they get a blob of money) and so as a result they don’t follow the art market year after year. As an art consultant with 15 years experience - I have perspective. I know which artists hit on an idea 15 years ago and are peddling the same picture in 1001 variations, conversely I know which artists are getting better and better with age. 2. I (hopefully) stop you from making expensive mistakes. Art is one of the last unregulated markets. The bad news is that because of that it can be full of rogues, chancers, people who try and sell you something that they say is one thing, but is perhaps not. I have a healthy cynicism of the art world – I have developed a cautious and sanguine approach to the people I work with and only work with people I know I can absolutely trust. My reputation is the most important thing I have and I am not about to go and ruin that by working with one of the many charlatans out there. CAT CAFÉ OPENS IN LONDON Purrrfect timing for cat café after initial plans ‘paws-ed’ by pandemic
C
ATS are the talk of London’s West End again – but Andrew Lloyd Webber has no part in its success. Java Whiskers cat café made its debut on October 31st, six months after its original launch plans had to be shelved due to the pandemic. Occupying former offices in Great Portland Street, Fitzrovia Marylebone, the venue will entice cat lovers with its winning formula of food and feline ‘therapy,’ something the owners say is needed more than ever. Behind the concept are three friends from southern Sweden who enjoyed huge success with the launch of their country’s first ever cat café last year. Self-confessed ‘entrepreneurs with big hearts,’ Jon Bäcklund, Tobias Larsson and Joakim Wessman are also the team behind successful Swedish trampoline park chain Yoump. Tobias Larsson said: “We wanted to find a business that is doing something good. We want to create a great environment for both the cats and humans that is calm and comfortable but also very healing. The café has two primary objectives: to improve the mental health and wellbeing of its visitors and to reduce the rate of cat homelessness. “It´s been very challenging due to the unpredictability the pandemic has brought upon us and the public. However, these challenges have made us more determined to stick to our original plans and open our café to offer a bit of positivity to London in the midst of the crisis. “We do feel our unique concept of service will be of even greater importance now. The holistic mental wellbeing benefits of spending time with

cats has been widely documented. So we are delighted we can offer this service to our guests very soon. “And we’ve gone above and beyond to make our café COVID-friendly and taken every possible safety measure to give you that peace of mind when you visit us!” Java Whiskers will foster a maximum of nine kitties at any one time from The Scratching Post Cat Rescue shelter, in Waltham Abbey, until suitable new forever homes can be found among its customers. The purpose-built cattery, in Enfield, has been a labour of love for Susan Delaney for 15 years. Susan said she saw this as a new opportunity to help tackle the growing number of unwanted cats in and around London. She added: “I thought it a fantastic idea and it is definitely the first time we will have worked with a cat café and thought it was such a wonderful opportunity to move the charity forward by rehoming to people who will see the cats’ personalities and fall in love. “This will help us, as a charity move forward and rescue more cats. There is an ever- growing population of unwanted cats in and around London, so this will help towards the volume of reports we receive.” The Scratching Post can be contacted at: scratchingpost.co.uk

Bird’s Eye London by Paul Campbell
B
Sensational photographic book captures London from the air
ird’s Eye London, the first title from Graffeg photographic imprint Bird Eye Books, showcases stunning aerial images by photographer, Paul
Campbell. More than 150 photographs give a totally fresh perspective on some of London’s most famous landmarks, as well as an insight into corners of the capital that are hidden from the usual street level view. The book is separated into chapters that document the city’s iconic attractions and architectural landmarks. For example, Royal London features not only Buckingham Palace and Hampton Court, but the Royal Chelsea Hospital and the Tower of London. A City within the City captures Smithfield Meat Market, the Bank of England and Exchange Square, while other chapters feature landmarks such as Charing Cross station, The Oval and the famous Thames barges. Other subjects to receive this spectacular aerial treatment include parks, national museums and galleries, cathedrals and places of worship, the bridges spanning the busy waters of the Thames, railway stations, elite sporting venues, and the striking modern designs of The Shard and other more recent additions that constantly alter the London skyline, such as The Pinnacle, now the tallest building in the City of London. “I have always been mesmerised by the landscapes as a passenger flying into London from the east which takes you over the capital and finally on to Heathrow,” says Paul Campbell. “The book

for me was a labour of love, and I felt privileged to see so much of the capital from this angle – a view most people only see fleetingly, if at all. It was a fascinating process, as everything that is familiar from the ground takes on a new persona from the air.” Campbell chose to use a helicopter for his photoshoots, rather than use a drone. Despite technological advances, a drone cannot yet compete with a top-of-the-range camera manned by a top-of-the-range photographer. ADVENT CALENDAR
What a topsy-turvy year it has been for us all. The summer sun is now a faded memory and Christmas shopping feels like an even bigger challenge this year. Lockdown gave me the chance to find some small, ethical companies, whose gorgeous products sit alongside special items from trusted favourites. So here is my take on the ‘Advent Calendar’ that I am certain will put smiles on faces. I hope I’ve made life a little easier for you.

The Florida Keys and Key West A World Away A
t the southernmost tip of Florida lies an idyllic set of islands known as The Florida Keys and Key West. 126 miles of silky white sands, with water as clear and as vibrant as an aquamarine. Visitors to the islands can easily board a direct flight to Miami from the UK, pick up a retro convertible, sling their bags in the back, put their sunnies on and begin their road trip adventure down to the Keys. The Overseas highway links all the islands and makes not only travelling between them incredibly easy, but part of the adventure. Nothing feels more freeing than a warm glow on your skin, and a breeze through your hair while you watch the sunlight glitter off the ocean as you zoom towards a golden horizon, suspended somewhere between sea and sky. In the Florida Keys you are a world away from the theme parks of central Florida, in a place that envelopes you with its warmth and beauty and grants you permission to shed the worries of the real world you just left behind. Here you can embrace wide open spaces and relax in a culture that welcomes everyone, just as they are. The turquoise blue waters that surrounds Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key and Key West is a treasure trove both above and below. The future of city hotels
Everyone is escaping to the country, but what can we expect from an urban weekend away? Sarah Marshall finds out.
A new type of meet and greet Stickers on the floor guide guests on a one-way flow to reception, where staff in masks sit behind Plexiglass screens. Sanitised key cards are placed on the desk in an envelope – to avoid any touching – and people are advised to use lifts one bubble at a time. On departure, contactless payments are preferred. Behind the scenes The hotel group has introduced a series of Allsafe protocols in its properties worldwide, including increased safety measures and use of hospital-grade cleaning products, with standards checked by an independent auditor. Most guests won’t even notice the changes, but it’s comforting to know germs are being blitzed.
F
or many, a staycation will be the most appealing option for a summer holiday this year. Fine weather coupled with ease of travel mean cottages and campsites have been snapped up closer to home. Some reports suggest that in the run-up to venues being reopened, a property was being booked every few seconds. Most of these, however, are countryside retreats. It makes sense. During lockdown, many of us developed a deeper affinity with nature, tuning into birdsong, following the life-cycle of blossoms and generally appreciating the colour green. There’s the safety aspect too; a remote, isolated hideaway is perceived to be the best Coviddodging option right now. So, where does that leave city breaks? Iconic spots like Venice and Paris will no doubt attract travellers keen to explore without the typical crowds, but other urban centres are likely to suffer. In London, it’s hoped the reopening of major galleries and museums will draw people. The National Gallery has relaunched with lead show Titian: Love, Desire, Death, originally forced to close after a three day run. Tate Modern and Tate Britain will both invite visitors from July 27. Four days later, the Design Museum in Kensington

returns with a brand new exhibition: Electronic: From Kraftwerk to The Chemical Brothers. Owned by the Accor group, Novotel London Bridge is one of several properties to reopen in the capital. The hotel management is realistic about the future, anticipating the first wave of guests will be friends and family visiting loved ones, but not wanting to stay under the same roof. Over time, however, they hope people will come back simply to enjoy the city and its attractions.
Rooms with a different view Rooms look remarkably similar, although high touch points, such as magazines, cushions and telephones have been removed. Teabags and coffee sachets are kept in a zip lock bag, with any unused items quarantined for 72 hours – avoiding unnecessary waste. In terms of communication, the hotel is encouraging guests to contact reception via WhatsApp. Bye, bye breakfast buffets It’ll be a disappointment for many, but the days of stacking plates with bacon, eggs and pancakes are long gone. Instead, everyone will receive a take away bag of juices, fruit and pastries. How about hospitality? This is where Accor promise there will be very little change. Their ongoing Heartist campaign is based around delivering special moments to guests, and this will continue post-lockdown. Delivering birthday cakes might be a thing of the past, admits general manager Matt Brett, but there are clever alternatives. “We can record birthday greetings and fun messages,” he says. “There are lots of ways we can still interact with our guests and make them feel welcome.”

The school is transforming the entire west side of the site, building an architecturally stunning Junior School, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Centre and a Sixth Form Centre. St Dunstan’s, which is today home to nearly 1,000 pupils aged 3 – 18, has a long history of investing in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and was one of the first schools in the country to invest in science laboratories and dedicated technology rooms.
With a focus on collaboration across the four fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, this new centre will transform these specialist subjects, currently dispersed across the College. Making the most of the latest technology and design available, this centre will also include cutting-edge facilities, building on historical roots in inspiring technical creativity and innovation. Speaking about the new facilities, St Dunstan’s headmaster, Mr Nicholas Hewlett said: ‘This represents the most significant redevelopment of the College site since the very first bricks were laid. ‘I feel sure our founders and benefactors would be proud of the innovative new buildings that are being constructed, as records show they were intent that a St Dunstan’s education should be ‘ahead of the current time’. ‘As one of the first schools in the world to have 1 0 8 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0
invested in science and technology laboratories, it seems fitting that 130 years on, we are creating state of the art STEM facilities for the next generation of Dunstonians.’ The new junior school will have a specific focus on outdoor learning spaces, and each year group will have their own dedicated outside area. There will also be redesigned playing fields and the new development will also include two new multi-use games areas ensuring pupils have unrestricted

access to age-appropriate, exceptional sporting facilities. ‘There is no better time to join our junior school,’ Miss Laura Whitwood, Head of Junior School explained. The Sixth Form Centre will be positioned within the heart and main central atrium of the STEM Block. The design of this area is modelled on university-style learning, including large, independent study spaces, social areas and a sixth form café, which will feature outdoor seating for the students to enjoy. By September 2021 and through fundraising, the College will be adding a new Performing Arts Centre and a Plaza (named by the pupils) at the back of the College which will be both a CCF parade and an outdoor performance venue, as well as enhance our sport and leisure centre. Most recently, St Dunstan’s was awarded ‘excellent’ by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. The inspectors found that ‘the quality of the pupils’ academic achievement and other achievements is excellent,’ and that ‘pupils of all ages display excellent knowledge, skills and understanding and become resilient in their learning as they move through the school’. The report’s key findings also found that St Dunstan’s pupils of all ages ‘have outstanding attitudes to learning and are effective independent learners and thinkers’ and that they ‘learn effectively by collaborating with their peers’. ‘We will of course not become complacent,’ Nicholas Hewlett explained. ‘We see this as endorsement of our direction of travel and not an end point in its own right.’ ‘There is still much to achieve and a huge amount to look forward to in the years that are to come; wonderful new buildings, the potential for some outstanding academic results and, above all else, grounded and rounded young people who are well prepared to face and challenge the vagaries of our society with understated confidence, resolute values and humility.’

150 years of education at Amesbury
M
any are considering the move to a more rural setting and at the heart of that decision is not just home, but also school. Consequently, knowledgeable, honest and balanced advice about not only the preparatory school years, but also senior school options is what is required so that parents can make an informed choice about a life changing decision. At Amesbury School in Hindhead, Surrey we offer a modern, holistic and academically rigorous education, complemented by idyllic surroundings in which to develop interests in a range of co-curricular activities. We prepare children for a range of senior schools and our Headmaster, Mr Jonathan Whybrow, will use his many years of experience to guide parents as they seek to make the right decision for their child. At present, the educational landscape at all ages faces the need to adapt and Amesbury, with its established emphasis on digital learning, is perfectly placed to do this. In recent weeks, several urban senior schools in the Guildford area have been obliged to change the nature of their entrance tests and Amesbury has protected its candidates from the stresses of these changes by pro-active preparation. The mental wellbeing of children is at the forefront of coping with the pandemic and just as parents are working to protect their children so must schools play their part. By using our beautiful and extensive grounds, Amesbury is able

to provide a balance to work in the classroom through an extensive co-curricular programme. The School has a high reputation for its performing arts and sport. Amesbury is a fine school and is proud to be playing an important role, however small, in the national effort to combat the pandemic. We strive to create a working relationship with home as we all know that this is at the heart of a successful education and should we, once again, face lockdown, we are poised to offer ‘virtual Amesbury’. At present, we are open for business and look forward to welcoming you to one of our forthcoming open days. amesburyschool.co.uk

intellectually curious & ambitious PUPILS
A
s an institution which seeks to innovate and improve our educational offering, we are delighted to be collaborating with Century Tech as one of its flagship schools. The platform makes use of artificial intelligence (AI) to understand a pupil’s learning profile and then uses this information to present an individualised pathway which is made up of ‘learning nuggets’ that suit the pupil’s learning needs. It also produces rich data that indicates to the teacher the pupils’ strengths, weaknesses and next steps. Used with Years 7-11, the platform helps us understand pupils’ learning profiles and pathways, and to offer lessons, mentoring and support in a more targeted, focused way. We have even heard of parents of pupils in Year 7 hosting ‘Century parties’ where they get together for dinner while children work collaboratively through their pathways. It is really pushing our teaching staff to engage with academic data in a meaningful way. The information that comes through a pupil’s engagement with the platform is driving learning intentions in lessons which allows teaching to be truly responsive. Historically, teachers draw out inferences of learning based on assessments, but Century draws out those inferences for us. It can reliably let teachers know that a pupil is strong in a particular concept, for example 1 1 2 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0
“In order to access the great conversations within subjects, they need to build up a complex body of knowledge”
sentence openings or converting decimals to fractions, based on their performance in a series of tasks over time. This removes the margin of error that can sometimes come with teacher judgement, assessment construction and progress. What we have seen already is an increased engagement with a greater level of personalised lesson planning and support as a consequence of this. If the technology is powerful enough to draw out such reliable inferences around pupil progress, there might be an opportunity to deploy it in the context of public examination and assessment – especially given the question marks around the unreliability of summative assessment. We are also interested in how Century might be enhanced or developed to provide summative information. Currently, the AI which drives Century is largely focused on the formative: Pupil X is quite good at this, so needs to complete a bit more of it, while Pupil Y is very good at this, so should only do a small amount from time to time. The power clearly exists for the platform to gauge competency levels – but it is not yet programmed to do so through a nationally-recognised framework, such as grades or levels. At Haileybury, we are committed to supporting pupils to become intellectually curious and ambitious. In order to access the great conversations within subjects, they need to build up a complex body of knowledge. Century Tech supports them in doing so, which means more of our teaching time can be freed up to probe, analyse and critique this knowledge, drawing pupils into subject areas and enabling them to identify as learners. haileybury.com

Independent School of the Year! … DLD College London Secures Double Award Win
D
LD College London is celebrating incredible success as it secures a duo of prestigious national accolades, a Special Judges’ Award for Independent School of the Year 2020 and Independent Boarding School of the Year 2020. As a highly regarded award scheme, Independent Schools of the Year 2020 recognises the outstanding achievements of schools and their students across the independent education sector, in the UK and in British schools overseas. The Special Judges’ Award, created this year, was announced by the Chief Executive Officer of the Independent Schools’ Council, Julie Robinson, in recognition of the college’s superior student wellbeing and urban boarding provision. The judges recognised DLD College London as a school that is “brimming with energy” and “offers something really special in the sector for its students, combining old and new approaches to education.” The triumphant Westminster Bridge-based school was honoured as a joint winner of the Independent Boarding School of the Year 2020 award, in celebration of its innovative and lifeenhancing boarding provision in the heart of London. was delighted with the success. He commented, “We are thrilled to be announced as ‘Boarding School of the Year 2020’ and to receive the Special Judges’ Award for ‘Independent School of the Year 2020’. These much-coveted accolades are a fitting testament to the achievements of our students and our hardworking staff members, who go above and beyond each day for our school community, making the impossible possible.” DLD College London is the only independent school in the heart of London with on-site boarding and is housed in highly contemporary, purpose-built premises on 199 Westminster Bridge Road, overlooking the Palace of Westminster and the River Thames. The school offers students aged 14-19 the chance to study a wide range and flexible combinations of GCSEs, A-Levels, BTEC courses and International Foundation Programmes (IFP). It also offers an Academic Preparation Programme (APC). As part of the Alpha Plus Group, DLD College London provides a ‘gold standard’ of educational quality. Classes are small, enabling students and teachers to focus upon the most effective ways of learning and to provide them with the highest levels of pastoral care. The school’s beating heart is its award-winning wellbeing centre.

Escape the Classroom North London’s newest school’s approach to educating our future generation during a pandemic
A
s we continue to navigate the new academic year around COVID-19, eager to see our children back in school and learning but fearful of the underlying threat, north London’s brand-new Nursery and Pre-Prep School is thriving despite the uncertain circumstances. North Bridge House Nursery and Pre-Prep West Hampstead opened this September and has been innovatively designed to allow continuous provision of the curriculum outdoors, using sustainable products wherever possible and combining 3D technology with multi-sensory play space to transform children’s learning environment. The ‘Imaginarium’ is an immersive space that transports children to the very place they are learning about - whether that be a tropical rainforest or a railway station. While this state-ofthe-art facility inspires a genuine love of learning from the outset of children’s education, the outdoor play area is a hugely beneficial teaching environment. Outdoor learning may have been embedded into the curriculum at North Bridge 1 1 6 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0
House long beforethe current pandemic, however, it comes with a newfound appreciation since the Government outlined how transmission of the Coronavirus is significantly lower in outdoor spaces. “While we have always shaped our provision around the outdoors being fundamental to growth and development in the Early Years - running everything from science and minibeast clubs to an annual petting zoo in our playgrounds - staff have embraced being able to collapse the timetable and take any lesson outside with the sheltered extension directly over the threshold,” says Executive Headteacher, Christine McLelland. Building on the NBH group’s established Early Years and Key Stage 1 expertise, Christine has designed the new West Hampstead campus to take children beyond the conventional and physical constraints of the classroom and into the natural environment, where they are stimulated through all kinds of sensory, practical, and social experiences – including growing their own vegetables and tending to school pets. “We want to be as organic as possible and to provide the children with as many unique opportunities as possible in this central London location,” concludes Head of School Eilish Sleator. School in the time of Covid-19 – the view from Year 9
S
chool life has had to change quite a lot since the lockdown. How are children adapting to these changes after six months away from school? Here, girls and boys in year 9 at St Benedict’s air their views on school in the time of Covid-19.
What is it like to be back at school? Brianna“It’s the same except for the social distancing, hand sanitisation and having to wear a mask.” Louis “I thought it would be a lot harder to adjust but it’s been quite easy. I’m glad to be back.”
How did you find online learning? Vita “I really enjoyed online learning but I missed my friends. Online lessons ran very smoothly and I
don’t think I missed out on any learning.” Nicholas “If you needed help with something you could message the teacher using Microsoft Teams. You could definitely get your work done faster because you could be proactive.” Jack “I actually liked it but socially it was quite hard. Also, I missed the cricket season which is probably my favourite sport.”
How have your co-curricular activities changed? Nicholas “In sport, there’s a lot less contact and no matches with other schools until at least halfterm.” Jack “We have house matches on Saturdays in place of fixtures which is nice. It’s quite important for your house to win!” Vita “Singing lessons are different now because we have to sing to a mirror, so you can see the teacher’s reflection, instead of singing towards them.”
What about the future? Louis “I think if we went back into lockdown again we’d be well prepared and would go into online learning without difficulty because we’ve already got it sorted out. But school in person is a lot better because I prefer just talking to the teachers, being with friends and being able to play sports.” For more information about St Benedict’s visit the website at stbenedicts.org.uk or telephone 020 8862 2254 1 1 8 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0

A Guide to the English Independent School System Finding your way through the maze of English Independent Education can be tough, and we can help say Eaton House Schools
T
here are many benefits to an English Independent school education, including enriched academic opportunities, smaller class size, parental involvement and the latest technological resources. However, the whole process can feel complex. It can be helpful to choose a Nursery and a Pre-Prep school that can guide you through the competitive examination processes for top senior schools, such as Westminster, Eton and St Paul’s.
“Young children will join Pre-Prep Schools at 4+ and move on to Prep schools at 8+” 3-4: Independent Nursery Some Independent Nurseries, Pre-Prep and Prep Schools register from birth. The term in which the child turns three is a common start date, but dates vary. Independent Nurseries sometimes pursue a 1 2 4 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0
more active Early Years Curriculum, providing building blocks for future exam success, in addition to getting children ‘school-ready.’
4-13: Pre-Prep School and Prep School Young children will join Pre-Prep Schools at 4+ and move on to Prep schools at 8+. These schools offer fun yet intensive academic and co-curricular opportunities. For boys, this leads to exams at either 7+, 8+, 11+ or 13+ for Senior schools; for girls it is usually at 11+. The 11+ exam is taken in the January of Year 6. The Common Entrance 13+ exam is taken in the June of Year 8. This is preceded by an interview or pre-test in Year 6 or 7 when a firm offer is made. Many London day schools and boarding schools set their own exams, others belong to groups, such as the London 11+ Consortium, making exam entries to a number of schools easier. There really is no need to worry. The school will guide you through it all.
EATON HOUSE SCHOOLS Eaton House Schools (ages 3-13) has two sites in Belgravia and Clapham. There are two co-educational Early Education Curriculum + Nurseries providing early maths skills, English through phonics, problem solving and active play, together with cooking, yoga, and more. Nursery children move on to the single sex Pre-Preps (4-8) and the Preps (8-11, or 8-13) which act as feeders for schools such as St Paul’s, Westminster, Eton, JAGS, Wycombe Abbey, Winchester, Dulwich, and many more top schools. Boots Made For Walking
T
here can be few better ways to blow away the cobwebs than with a good walk on a Cornish beach, perhaps with a faithful hound at your side. Such was the experience of Sandy Wallis of Perranporth with her very obedient Rhodesian Ridgeback,
Roscoe. Sandy was keen to have the right footwear for the job: durable, comfortable and waterproof. Thwarted in her quest to find the perfect dog walking footwear she decided to create her own dream pair of boots. “We walk every day in all weathers” says Sandy but I just could not find a pair of boots that were comfy and would keep my feet warm and dry. Hiking boots didn’t cope well with those deep muddy puddles and wellies are not really suitable for a 5 mile hike”. Having rummaged around in her cupboard, Sandy found an old pair of “riggers” which are safety boots originally designed for the North Sea Oil riggers. “I started wearing them to walk the dog and they were amazing. I thought it would be good to design my own ‘off rig’ version that were lighter and with an excellent hiking sole. The result is a very stylish, practical boot suitable for both men and women. A Creative Vision
Founder of 303 Face | Body Marci Lundy takes the time to use her skincare brand for good.
“M
y initial mission was to create natural skincare that made others feel good about themselves, and over time that has grown into a passion that goes hand in hand with the brand.” Generally speaking, people tend to use skincare and cosmetics to reveal/conceal certain things about themselves, and the 303 brand is meant to serve as a self care/self service playground, allowing individuals to experiment with an assortment of balms, serums, scrubs, and soaks. “A self care regimen is of the utmost importance,” states Marci. “Whether you’re stepping out the front door, or have a date with yourself and your favorite show at home, it should be enjoyable. The 303 line has a Revive Body Tea, made for luxe bubble baths, or soothing foot soaks. There’s also Served Facial Mist, made to refresh skin, as well as offer a natural pick-me-up when ones mood or energy needs to be lifted.” Building a brand on the basis of helping someone bring forth their best self is a painless labor of love. As a person that feels there is great strength in individuals depending on their own energy to bring wellness and balance into their lives, each skincare item is designed to bring an awareness of treating oneself; from the moment a person connects with a particular product(s) while viewing it online, to the moment that it is received, and the level of joy and anticipation to try it creates a complete experience, hopefully with the person creating a full on day and evening ritual with the brand. The company’s motto is Spa Grade. Handmade. Pure. You. When on the 303 Face | Body site, each item’s designed to emulate the feeling of being at a spa, and deciding which products you’d want to use for your massage; which nature based soap (whose scent you’d like to get lost in) whilst in the bath suits you while meditating, and which mask you’d like to assist you in clearing your pores as you find your center. The 303 Face | Body brand annually adds new products with the loyal customer in mind. “I’ve had such positive feedback over the years, and it’s been wonderful to see the literal changes in appearance of my customers skin. Introducing Mameha:
The Skincare Disruptor With Heart
“M
ameha means ‘I am here’ in Japanese. Our skincare products are about being present, they’re about saying ‘I am here I am conscious and I am not trying to jump through a hoop to avoid cosmetic surgery ten years from now’” says Ila Colombo, founder and CEO of Mameha a skincare line that is deliberately upending many of the tried and tested methodologies and philosophies of the beauty industry. Speaking over Zoom, Ila resembles an animated version of a beauty shoot. Preternaturally beautiful, her skin is dewy with not a breakout in sight, her eyes bright, her hair glossy, thick and long. But this wasn’t always the case “I suffered

with skin dermatitis and since I was a baby I had to use medical grade cortisone creams” A serious episode five years ago was the impetus for her to start seeking alternative solutions, she elaborates: “What I discovered is the cortisone is counterproductive on many levels [because] it fixes the symptoms but not the root cause.” Indefatigable by nature she took a series of online university courses to gain a deeper understanding of skin and dermatitis in particular. “I basically found out that dermatitis is nothing more than a lack of [being able to] synthesise Vitamin A….By not being able to synthesise vitamin A I am more susceptible to things. So I sought to cure myself [with a combination of] a bigger intake of Vitamin A on a

topical level and a nutritional level” Ila’s Eureka moment, of considering the skin’s nutritional needs and not just its aesthetic appearance was further augmented when she drew upon her heritage as both scope for analysis and product development, she adds “This is very much a personal story to me. I am Italian and Brazilian but with a Japanese step father. I have been exposed to these cultures throughout my life…Italy [embraces] diverse nutrition [as part of the Mediterranean diet]…Japan is very interested in skincare as a health issue..and there is no distinction between men and women as they are totally educated in looking after themselves for the long run…Obviously the Amazon which is part of my journey relates to the basic ingredients as a lot of the ingredients in skincare especially relating to ageing and nutrition come from or were discovered initially in the Amazon rainforest.” Fusing these different knowledge systems resulted in the development of a skincare line which was responsive to the skin’s particular needs rather than merely seeking to mask imperfections. Adopting the Mameha system requires users to view their skincare regimen, rather like their dietary one, where different nutrients are consumed daily to solicit overall wellbeing, boost the skin’s innate ability to repair itself and result in improved complexion. A kit will last a month with only three or four drops needed per application in the morning and evening. Mameha’s futuristic packaging, conceived by award winning designer Ross Lovegrove is
intentionally gender neutral and speaks straight to the heart of the brand’s values. Ila elaborates; “Our product is not only gender neutral but ethnic neutral …the skin is an organ that we all have… We have a few parameters that are different like melanin or a man and woman might have different hormones at particular times of the life but apart from those fluctuating times, the skin anatomically is exactly the same. That is why our product is universal in that sense“. A further design masterstroke is the size of the kits, the seven 10 millilitres ampoules are air-travel size compliant but last thrice as long as the average travel kit and are a response to our modern busy schedules as well as the fact that many people live in smaller spaces so storage is an important consideration. Granted the kit is expensive, but pitted against the injectable and cosmo-ceutical offerings on the market, it is a canny investment. When I ask her about how else she chooses to differentiate in the crowded marketplace Ila adds: “We are not trying to bleach or brighten the skin, we are not trying to tan the skin, we are just trying to give the most comprehensive nutrition for health. Health is not beauty enhancement it is just health which consequently is beauty.” In an age of seeking photoshop perfection, launching in early 2021 Mameha is a refreshing response to an industry that often preys on customer’s insecurities. Instead it aims to equip and empower. - Written by Mazzi Odu To order visit mamehaskin.com

return to happier times is just the ticket to battle this period of uncertainty, especially as the nights draw in over the winter months. While we don’t know how we will be able to get together with our nearest and dearest over the festive season ahead, most of us are desperate for an escape from being largely house-bound in our loungewear and basics. While we have had our fair share of studies in recent months, it is widely agreed that dressing up or smartening-up an existing ensemble with a new accessory is a sure-fire way to lift spirits. With more outdoor socialising set to take place over the months ahead, staying glamorously warm has never been more important. In recent years, fur-trimmed scarves have become a staple for the Autumn/Winter season with Richmond-based brand Kaminee a “go-to” destination for Londoners in search of unique scarves, many of which are one-offs that have been carefully hand-embroidered by artisans that have learned techniques spanning generations. The eponymous brand, founded by Kaminee Buttani in 2002, has developed a reputation for providing a sumptuous and creative edge to the season’s collection from elegant evening wear and wraps to an exquisite collection of kaftans, appealing to women of all ages in search of well finished clothing and accessories made from high quality fabrics. BEAUTIFUL BAGS BY VERDI
S
wedish-Italian creative director Gabriella Verdi started her namesake brand after a 30-year career in fashion, where she experienced a vast array of cultures and
styles. Although born in Sweden, she has lived and worked all over Europe and Asia, developing and producing new collections for some of the world’s most recognisable fashion houses, and it’s this experience of travel and foreign living that serves as the backdrop to the brand. Her initial collection includes a selection of lightweight vanity cases, which was a natural starting point for Gabriella, having always had to compromise on form or function to carry her beauty essentials as she travelled overseas. “So I set out to change it,” she says. Gabriella drew inspiration from her mother, who lived in Italy in the 1950s and 1960s and regularly bought dresses, hats, knits and shoes that were all made to order by local artisans. Her mother says they were made with such love and affection that they have stood the test of time and she still has some of these pieces today. “With this inspiration in mind, I wanted to go back to the craftsmen that I’ve built relationships with over decades, to collaborate on my product concepts,” Gabriella says. With brand Verdi, Gabriella wanted to embrace

that same slow fashion philosophy, making pieces to order, using traditional methods and keeping artisanal skills alive. This production concept is central to Verdi’s ethos. It eliminates overproduction, as only the leather and materials needed to fulfill each order is procured, which minimises waste and removes the need for storage facilities. For the client, Gabriella says this working model means the label’s exclusivity is maintained while allowing for a closer relationship to gauge the popularity of styles. Her initial collection is heavily influenced by the glamour and romanticism of early 20th century rail and ocean travel, and includes a range of matching clutches. “I particularly love that period; the classic styling and timeless elegance of everything. I wanted to incorporate that into my collection so that each piece looks and feels just as opulent, whether you’re travelling or at home.” Verdi’s collections are handmade in boutique Tuscan workshops while leathers are sourced from a nearby world-renowed tannery and are derived exclusively as a by-product of food production. The bespoke hardware is gold plated brass. “The materials we use, and the craftsmanship involved, means we can produce real examples of genuine luxury...something that’s exclusive and beautiful and keeps its appeal over time. Just as my mother still treasures her pieces after all these years, I hope my customers will feel the same.” verdionline.com
Aktaie Jewellery T
he idea behind Aktaie, the new British jewellery brand, was born during long beach walks with the dog along the shores of the North Sea in Norfolk. Fluidity of the waves, their movement and cleanliness of lines inspired many of Aktaie designs. The waves would often bring beautiful stones such as quartz and carnelian that were
tumbled by the ocean over many years making them smooth and rounded. There was such beauty in those natural stones and their flawed shapes that it gave the inspiration for jewellery that is simple, where nothing detracts from the beauty of the gems, jewellery that is perfectly imperfect. Name Aktaie was not chosen by chance. Being one of the fifty Neireids, Aktaie is the Greek goddess of the seashore, it seemed like Aktaie herself gifted the idea that has inspired the creation of the brand. Gemstones are faceted freehand and there is great beauty in slight imperfections and variations in colour, because just like it is in nature – nothing is ever absolutely perfect. Each design is completely unique and all pieces are created by hand with great passion in a small studio in Norfolk by the designer and founder, Ksenia. rom rejection for a GCSE textiles course to Fashion Designer of the Year finalist; this is the story of Jay Gill, the Birmingham designer behind the awardwinning independent fashion brand Jheez. Throughout his teenage years, Jay had always taken a keen interest in the latest urban streetwear trends, naming collections including the Jeremy Scott x Adidas footwear collaboration as inspirations for his creativity. Despite being rejected for his high school’s textiles course, Jay was determined to make it in the fashion industry and sought out work experience with a local clothing manufacturer where he acquired the skills and knowledge that led him to launch his streetwear brand Jheez in November 2014. From the outset Jay’s vision was for Jheez to be the only true limited-edition streetwear brand, producing limited runs of each collection and using premium fabrics to keep designs fresh and the brand exclusive. Alongside managing Jheez, Jay completed a degree in Business Law at Nottingham Trent University, graduating in 2018 after being awarded the prize of ‘Most Commercially Viable Business’ during the university’s Enterprise Week. Jay’s relentless hard work was paying off, proving him to be an astute entrepreneur and earning support from the Princes

In 2019 Jay was able to focus solely on Jheez, and the brand enjoyed an immensely successful year with pop up events in Jay’s hometown of Birmingham and across the capital, including a seminar on the Evolution of Streetwear at the prestigious London Fashion Week. Building on the incredible success of 2019, Jay started 2020 with a bang by working with British reality star and martial artist Aaron Chalmers, with Jheez sponsoring his February MMA bout in Dublin. The fight and afterparty, which was attended by UFC superstar Conor McGregor, garnered international interest for the brand and following this, Jay was set to take Jheez to international shows in Las Vegas and Los Angeles this summer, a move which has been delayed due to the Covid-19 crisis. Not letting a pandemic stand in his way, Jay is continuing to focus his energy into growing the Jheez brand and was voted by the public as a finalist for Swish Media’s Fashion Designer of the Year award. With the awards taking place 21 November 2020, stay tuned to @jheezofficial on Instagram to see if Jay will take home the gong, and to celebrate Jheez’s virtual sixth birthday event. Relieve your joint pain with fast and effective keyhole surgery at award-winning Parkside Private Hospital
A
rthroscopy, or ‘keyhole’ surgery, is a well-established procedure and the preferred treatment for a variety of knee, shoulder and other orthopaedic conditions. The surgery has restored the movement and confidence of thousands of patients, allowing them to get back to their daily activities faster, and with greater ease. But what does the keyhole surgery entail, and who might benefit from the procedure? Mr Rhidian Thomas, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Parkside Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Centre, explains: What is keyhole surgery? An arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure which usually sees patients return home the same day of the operation. The knee joint is the mostcommonly operated joint using this technique, followed by shoulder, ankle and hip. Smaller joints such as elbow and wrist are also increasingly being operated on in this way. What type of injury can be treated? Many knee injuries treated with keyhole surgery happen as a result of sports injuries, but not all. The most common injury treated by arthroscopy is the meniscus – the ‘shock absorber’ (which helps 1 6 6 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0
spread the load when an impact or force goes through the knee). In other joints, arthroscopy can also be used to rotator cuff injuries, articular cartilage problems, repair torn ligaments, and remove loose bodies. What are the benefits? There are a number of advantages of keyhole surgery. These include: Minimally-invasive procedure Precision surgery – only damaged areas operated on, compared to a larger part using the older open surgical technique. This leads to less risk of arthritis in the future • Little scarring, stiffness or pain • Lower risk of complications • Minimal waiting times at Parkside. Is a full recovery guaranteed? Recovery post-surgery will depend on your general health, the joint involved and the specific procedure you had. In the lower limb, crutches may be used to assist walking for a few days or weeks. Your rehabilitation specialist will guide you through the recovery process and advise you on what to expect.

‘Movember’:
What every man needs to know about prostate cancer
M
ovember is the annual campaign that seeks to raise awareness of men’s health problems such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s suicide. To mark the campaign, we talk to Chris Anderson, a leading urology expert, about prostate cancer.
an annual digital rectal examination to assess the texture and size of the prostate, and to have a PSA (prostate) blood test. These findings might be followed by MRI scanning and prostate biopsy. Together these investigations improve the chance of identifying prostate cancer at an early stage.
There aren’t always noticeable symptoms Prostate cancer occurs when the cells in the prostate gland grow out of control. While early stage prostate cancer doesn’t usually produce noticeable symptoms, some men may experience urinary problems, such as trouble initiating urinating, decreased urinary flow, infection, and blood in the urine or semen. Be aware of the specific risk factors The main risk factors are: • age: it mainly affects men over 50 • family history: approximately 15% of men with prostate cancer have a father or brother with prostate cancer • being black: Black men are nearly twice as likely to develop prostate cancer as white men for unknown reasons. Multiple tests diagnose prostate cancer It is good practise for men over 50 to undergo
Various treatment options are available There are various treatment options depending on how fast the cancer is growing and one’s age and life expectancy. Treatments for localised cancer include robotassisted prostatectomy (surgical removal of the prostate), external beam radiation therapy (high-powered X-rays kill the cancer cells), and brachytherapy (tiny radioactive seeds put into the prostate to stop cancer growing). Cryotherapy (destroys cells by freezing tissue), and High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound (HIFU) might also be considered. When Prostate cancer has spread (metastatic), hormone therapy (to stop the body producing testosterone which can stimulate the growth of cancer cells) and chemotherapy (which uses chemicals to destroy growing cells) are effective and can sustain remission for a number of years.

Skincare during Covid-19: essential tips to prevent dry and flaking skin Moisturising is key • When cleansing, think about switching to a moisturising or oil-based cleanser, as these successfully remove dirt, make-up and pollution without drying your skin.
Knowing what soap goes on your skin is important • Avoid using soaps which strip the natural oils – these oils form part of our skin ‘barrier’ and work to prevent further moisture loss. As a rule of thumb, it is usually best to ditch the traditional bar soap, particularly if you have dry or sensitive skin.
A special effort is required during these unprecedented times • I’m seeing more patients with dry, cracked hands from handwashing and alcohol gel in light of Covid-19. Regular application of rich moisturisers containing barrier-boosting niacinamide and shea butter can help to leave skin smooth and supple.
Locking in moisture will be even more effective • You might benefit from a richer moisturiser when it’s particularly cold. Look for a combination of effective moisturising ingredients such as Hyaluronic acid, glycerin and dimethicone which attract and lock-in moisture without blocking pores, so they are perfect for use under masks and avoiding “Maskne”.
Frequent application goes a long way

ashing hands and wearing face-masks are key steps to preventing COVID-19 – but they can also dry out your skin and cause various skin rashes. With winter fast approaching, it’s important to consider your skincare routine to ensure your skin is protected during the colder months, when skin can get dry and itchy. Dr Thivi Maruthappu Consultant Dermatologist at Highgate Private Hospital, explains:
• Apply your creams after washing and reapply frequently throughout the day. Some of my patients benefit from slathering on a thick layer of moisturiser under cotton gloves at night, as this helps creams penetrate deeper.
See a specialist • Inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and rosacea can flare up with seasonal changes. Seeing a consultant dermatologist can help find the solution and discover what works best for you. At Highgate Hospital our team is highly experienced and we provide personalised advice tailored to the needs and lifestyles of our patients.

What Is Kundalini Yoga?
N
eed to mix up your at-home workouts? Alicia Keys is just one celebrity who spends time doing Kundalini yoga. In a new cover story for InStyle, the singer spoke about her emotional awakening during a trip to Egypt, while “more spiritual epiphanies came later at a meditation and yoga retreat in LA,” explains the interviewer, “where she learned the Kundalini technique that she still practices daily.” Keys isn’t the only famous practitioner of Kundalini - Russell Brand is a huge fan of the technique and has posted plenty of his practices on YouTube. So what exactly is the Kundalini technique, and how could it benefit your body and mind? If you’ve done a regular, non-Kundalini yoga class before, you’ll be familiar with how amazing it can feel when the practice is over and you arise from savasana, the final resting pose. It’s a moment to feel peace and calmness - and this is what yoga teacher Neeta Naidoo (instagram. com/neetaniyamayoga) says you can get throughout a Kundalini practice. Naidoo teaches all types of yoga, including the popular hatha style, but is also trained in Kundalini and describes it as having “very instant benefits” and “healing properties”. “When you practice Kundalini, the awareness and the feeling of being balanced and relaxed is reached in a shorter time,” she explains. “You come out feeling refreshed, energised, [with] a sense of calm and peace.” So how do you achieve this almost instantaneous calm that so many of us search for? “With Kundalini, the postures are
1 7 2 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0
repetitive,” Naidoo explains. “It’s constantly moving, like an automatic rhythm of movement; then breathing; then chanting with mantras.” Take the yoga movement cat-cow: in Kundalini, Naidoo says, you could use this exercise as a warm-up and repeat it 21 or 56 times: “You just keep going, and then you add the breath.” As with all types of yoga, breath is incredibly important in Kundalini - but it’s even more powerful than you might be used to in a hatha or vinyasa class. “Kundalini yoga has something called ‘breath of fire’,” says Naidoo, which is a rapid and repetitive exhale through the nostrils newbies might find it makes them dizzy, but it’s used to help centre your practice. Within Kundalini, breath is used alongside physical postures to help you “withdraw from your senses”, notes Naidoo. “When you withdraw from your senses, you come to a point of staying focused” - and this is where the meditative element of Kundalini comes in, which is thought to help reduce stress and calm your mind. It also offers an opportunity to let go of thoughts and feelings that aren’t serving you, to become more “emotionally balanced”. Naidoo says: “If you’re balanced emotionally, you have stillness and calm, you can react better in life, you can deal with situations in life, you can lead a more balanced life - it goes on and on.” While there are plenty of physical benefits to Kundalini too - it’s great for your spine if you’ve been slouched over a desk all day for instance it’s particularly beneficial for what it can do for your mind. Naidoo notes the “energising of the body and the relaxation of the mind that takes place,” as well as “a shift in our consciousness that we don’t get in anything else we do”.

Why choosing self-pay private healthcare is a good option for surgery – a patient’s story B usiness owner Oliver is thankful he chose to have surgery at St John & St Elizabeth Hospital after suffering serious leg fractures playing football despite not having a private healthcare policy. The 41-year-old, who was swiftly and successfully treated at the hospital’s Orthopaedic Unit, became part of the growing trend of patients choosing to self-fund private medical care. The private self-pay healthcare sector has doubled in the last five years and Oliver’s case is a prime example of its appeal as he was able to access care quickly so that he could return to running his busy heating and plumbing business. He was originally taken to an NHS hospital after the injury but faced a week-long wait for surgery. “Any delay in getting back up on my feet was going to be bad for business. I own my own plumbing and heating business and being mobile is vitally important. “I don’t have private healthcare insurance but decided to pay directly for my treatment and the entire process was incredibly reassuring with all the information I needed conveyed efficiently and clearly.”

With examinations, tests and X-rays handled during an afternoon admission, consultant orthopaedic surgeon Mr James Youngman was able to operate at 9pm the same evening, using a combination of plates and screws to repair Oliver’s complex fractures. He was soon back home and starting a structured rehabilitation programme that allowed a swift return to work. “It was a real team effort,” says Mr Youngman, who has been working with the hospital for 14 years. “It requires a huge amount of dedication and coordination to ensure that happens but this is the way it always is St John & St Elizabeth Hospital.. Oliver adds: “I felt constantly looked after. The experience was very professional and caring.” Self-pay options are available at our Orthopaedic Unit, which provides a complete clinical service for the assessment, treatment and management of the entire spectrum of orthopaedic and musculoskeletal problems, including Rheumatology and Sports Medicine.

P
rostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men in the UK and about one in eight men will be diagnosed with it in their lifetime. It mainly affects men over the age of 55. The prostate is an organ at the base of the bladder that is important in the production of sperm. It gets larger as men get older but the vast majority of patients show no symptoms until it has grown large enough to put pressure on the uretha. Symptoms of prostate cancer can include needing to go to the toilet more frequently or urgently, having difficulty urinating, or having a poor urine stream. Blood and urine tests can help determine if a patient is likely to have prostate cancer and biopsies are used to identify the exact status of the cancer and to inform treatment decisions. Tests are also done to check if there are other cancers in the body which can involve a bone scan. The good news is that prostate cancer curable if caught early enough. Some patients will only need active surveillance with check-ups and scans every two years or they

Covid-19 Lockdown
How to Exercise and Avoid the Perils of Injury
How to avoid injury With the recent introduction of a second national lockdown and inevitable closure of recreational facilities, the need to remain fit and healthy this Winter has become a priority. While exercise is important to our physical and mental health, before trying out a new exercise regime gather as much information and guidance on the exercise and technique before performing the workout to reduce the risk of injury. The last lockdown saw a large number of sports and exercise injuries with pulled muscles and knee injuries accounting for approximately a third and ankle injuries making up a quarter. Although walking was the most popular exercise, according to data released by BUPA online cases accounted for just under a third of all exercises with running and cycling making up for 13% and 10% respectively. Mr Amer Khan, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, saw a large number of meniscus injuries of the knee in runners and clavicle (collarbone) fractures in cyclists due to falls all requiring treatment.
Top Tips Always ensure a proper warm up of all muscle groups before starting the exercise. This may be simply involve running on the spot or using low resistance therabands. If exercising indoors ensure the room is warm. If outdoors dress appropriately to keep the muscles warm. Remember its easier to strip off layers as muscles heat up. Incorporate 15 minutes for stretching and cooling down muscles after a workout. Adequate Rest Periods. If you are a relative beginner to exercising start with low intensity exercises and build up slowly onto higher intensity types. These should be of short duration with 1 8 6 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0
adequate intervening rest periods and “rest days. Have a training timetable and try to stick to it. Overexercising by trying to fit in too much in a short period is one of the commonest causes of injury. Vary the exercise regime by combining resistance weight training with running or cycling or a dance class with boxing. Nutrition, hydration and sleep. Poor nutrition will leave you feeling exhausted and unable to complete your exercise, adequate fluid intake is essential in helping prevent muscle cramps and sleep is necessary for the body to repair.
What if I injure myself during an exercise? Initially rest, ice or cold compress such as a pack of peas and elevation of the affected body part above the level of the heart will help reduce the swelling. If there is swelling of the joint, persisting pain or a feeling of instability then an urgent referral to an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in sports injuries is recommended. sportsmedlondon.com

Colour Your Way to Happy
A
s the UK hurtles towards winter, and shorter, darker days, it is important to ask yourself how your home makes you feel. If you are feeling exhausted and depleted, depressed and lethargic, bored and lifeless, then it may well be to do with the colours that surround you in your home.
There is a growing body of scientific evidence showing that the way in which spaces are designed has a direct impact on our psychological and physical health which in turn impacts our happiness and well-being. How you choose to decorate your home, or more specifically the colour palette you select, affects your mood and energy levels, your appetite and sleep patterns, and has a profound effect on your well-being. Although you see colour with your eyes, each different wavelength of coloured light stimulates a distinct part of your physical being, evoking a specific physiological response, which in turn produces a psychological reaction. In 1810 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote that “savage nations, uneducated people, and children have a great predilection for vivid colours,” but that “people of refinement … seem inclined to banish them altogether from their presence.” This mind-set led to the belief that 1 9 4 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0
colour was a bad thing, and subconsciously this still lingers today! Too many people do not quite know what to do with colour. They are scared that they will get it wrong, chromophobia creeps in, and so they tend to avoid it all together and play it ‘safe’ with shades of grey or beige. Colour choices are made on behalf of a future buyer of one’s home, or because of what our friends and family will think. However these neutral colour schemes seldom bring joy; that feeling of great pleasure and happiness! And without joy, you may be surviving, but you will not be thriving. If your surroundings lack energy and harmony, then no matter how beautiful your home might be, it will not make you feel truly alive. The drive towards joy is synonymous with the drive for life. Colour has the power to positively support us emotionally. It can instantly liven up a room, giving it a new perspective and completely changing the way that you, and your family, feel and behave in that space. And at times like this, as a second lockdown is looming and you will once more be spending much more time than usual in your home, creating a home that nurtures your health and well-being is more important than ever. nicolaholdendesigns.co.uk All images © Fiona Walker-Arnott

In this case the clients post the look book stage and Knox making sure that all parties were on the same page were keen to have a seamless experience and hands-off approach. Their wish to have a quality base finish with some fun accessories, smart furniture and clever joinery. Knox tackled the job as always with huge enthusiasm and were able to develop a strong base of trust with the clients. Every detail was designed by Knox and the entire project managed building and interiors throughout. Tip: trust is the core of all Knox projects. Clarity is key and open and honest communication The main core to deliver immense quality from Ted Todd flooring, Forbes and Lomax light fittings, Castrad architectural radiators to Phillip Jeffries and Hermes wallpapers. Mingled among these are clever and more cost-effective choices that still lend to an extremely smart finish. Tip: There is nothing wrong with mixing in some more cost-effective options if anything it adds to the overall interest of the final project. The bathrooms were all done in a Calacatta Oro porcelain copy by Minoli the same tile used throughout. The reason for this is that by adding too many factors to a bathroom in the opinion of Knox can date extremely fast! The best plan is to keep it simple and to concentrate on vein matching and to always reflect quality. Never forgetting lighting and the need for the small features such as heated mirrors and underfloor heating in
1 9 8 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0
bathrooms, in our opinion are always needed. Tip: Best to keep it simple and not have too many factors and shapes going on To compliment the fixtures and fittings the furniture was sourced or bespoke, Roche Bobois Sofas, Lliang and Emil bedsides and Eichholtz featured throughout. The fabrics are a mixture of GPJ Baker, Thibaut, Pierre Frey and Dedar. The accessories are collected throughout the project and bought when seen to give a personal and original feel. Knox feels strongly about this as an instant house needs to have a feel of individuality. Tip: To remember that every project should be unique and special one of a kind
“Their wish to have a quality base finish with some fun accessories, smart furniture and clever joinery”
During the final week, all possible angles were covered, the beds were made immaculately, the wine fridges and bar fully stocked even the fridge and pantry cupboards stocked, music throughout lending to a great vibe. On the final day Knox awaited the arrival of the clients, handed over the monogrammed keyrings and left them to enjoy their gorgeous new home. knoxnteriors.com office@knoxinteriors.com 07983 332332

Keeping London Magnificent
W
hen I first got involved in the security door and window industry, I thought I knew at least a bit about doors and windows, having used them all my life. As it turned out, I had a bit of an eye-opener when it came to the ease and speed with which criminals can gain entry to a property through various types of locks and doors. Everything I saw from lock picking to purely just kicking down the door made me realise that my front door had given me a false sense of security all this time. Affluent counties have reported year-on-year increases in burglaries during the latest release of annual crime stats and there are currently neighbourhoods in London where we’re helping to combat burglaries from mopeds crashing through front doors. There’s never any harm in being proactive and taking precautions to ensure your family and possessions are protected. A

JWJ INTERIORS I
n the midst of a global pandemic, JWJ Interiors has never been more in demand. With increased work and pleasure time being spent at home, people are looking to founder and mother of two Jess Willcox-Jones’ infectious enthusiasm for colour, texture and pattern to brighten their homes. Jess travels all over the country meeting clients from Cornwall to London, the Home Counties to the Highlands. Her projects range from soft furnishings to total refurbishments. She strongly believes that interior design is simply a service and should be accessible and affordable to all. Whatever the brief, her number one priority is to understand her client’s budget, style, requirements and function. She utilises all space to its best ability and turns houses into homes. Jess has access to all leading interior suppliers however likes to utilise the high street, the internet and her little black book of antique contacts for those unique pieces, saving clients time and money along the way. Jessica’s approachable manner and devilish sense of humour elevate the process from purely functional to fun and enjoyable. With an ever-growing client base, Jess endeavours to source materials and services locally, maintaining respect for original home-grown artisanship. She advises clients on the importance of investment “forever items” as well as scrimping on pieces where possible (no-one needs any more

With more than a decade of experience, Jess has an encyclopaedic knowledge of fabrics and suppliers as well as access to a vast range of products. Yet despite the enormity of choice out there, Jess can curate a vision seemingly effortlessly and with total conviction. She takes inspiration from her own rich experience and a childhood spent touring antique fairs, art galleries and textile mills with her father, former MD of Mary Quant, as well as hanging out with her Godparents at their vintage linen shop on Camden High Street. Evolving with the seasons and fashions while maintaining a vein of timeless integrity running throughout, Jess looks to her idols for fresh ideas: Edward Bulmer for his use of colour and natural heritage eco friendly paint; Molly Mahon for her creativity and craftmanship; Penny Morrison for her pattern combination confidence; Kit Kemp for her inspiring commercial portfolio; Lewis & Wood for their authentic British textiles and wallpapers; The Fabric Collective for new and inspiring textile designers; Robert Kime for one of a kind antiques & Pooky for fun and affordable lighting…she could go on forever! Morrocan Tiles from

Floors of Stone
e have spent many months trying to source the perfect tiles to fit in with our ever-growing range of beautiful tiles and we have now found just the ones. We are very excited to launch our new Mill House Blend Limestone and Buccella Tumbled Limestone. Both of these stunning tiles have been sourced from Morocco, close to the Atlas Mountains. The Buccella Tumbled Limestone has chalky, pale grey tones and softly tumbled edges help to give such a timeless feel to this stone and gives the impression of a floor that has been laid for many years. There is a lot of interest to these tiles with subtle black veining and mineral deposits running through the stone which adds even more natural beauty! The tiles are available in either an opus pattern or a freelength pattern so, depending on the look you wish to achieve, would depend on whether you would prefer a more obvious pattern or something a little more subtle. The hardwearing nature of these tiles means they are well suited to busy home environments and are ideal for use in kitchens, dining spaces and even external patio areas. The second recent addition is our Mill House Blend Limestone and there is something so 2 0 4 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0
charming about this tile and something so different from other products that are on the market. The tiles range in colour from a pale grey to a warmer oatmeal tone with a lot of colours in-between, making them truly unique! The tumbled edges and pitted surface provide a very authentic feel to the tiles and we know they would work perfectly in period properties such as cottages or barn conversions. The tiles come in a slightly different size to the rest of our range as they are available in a 200xFL (freelength) size but this means they lend themselves well to smaller areas, such as utility rooms and boot rooms, as well as large, open spaces. The Mill House Blend is an extremely hardwearing stone meaning it can be used outside for patios or pathways.

A BEAUTIFUL WOODEN FLOOR FOR LIFE Oak Parquet Silver White Oiled
T
he surface you walk on provides the backbone of an interior scheme. Get it right and it will make a dramatic difference to the overall feel of a room. Wood flooring is a wonderful option as it introduces colour, texture, pattern and character. It’s easy to live with being practical, hardwearing and a cinch to maintain. There are endless design options too. “Wood flooring is brilliant for bringing a scheme together,” says Peter Keane, Director of The Natural Wood Floor Company. “Dark floors create a luxurious look, while rustic floors with lots of knots enhance a casual, country scheme. Rich colours will add warmth, while pale colours will go with just about anything and introduce plenty of light into a room.” The grade of wood will also create a different look. Prime grades have minimal knots and colour variation, so create a contemporary feel. Natural grades have more feature marks so lend themselves to more traditional looks. “Don’t be constrained by this though,” Peter advises. “A rustic board with plenty of knots, shakes and detailing can soften modern schemes.” When it comes to the latest trends, darker hues are gaining in popularity. “Although there will always be a demand for light wooden floors, darker shades are about to step into the limelight and have their moment. The dark rich shades found in our Smoky Mountain and Baked Oak flooring

introduce a glamorous, dramatic look and can’t fail to get noticed.” Parquet blocks have been back in fashion for a while, but couldn’t be hotter right now. The combination of colour, wood detailing and pattern makes for a real statement floor. For an up-todate look go large with 600 mm sized blocks. Alternatively, aged blocks are great for adding extra character as they look like reclaimed blocks but can be used with underfloor heating. It always pays to buy a good quality floor from a reputable supplier, as the right wooden floor will improve your property, add to its value and last for years. The Natural Wood Floor Company manufacture most of the floors they sell and are also valued for their expertise. The full flooring collection can be viewed on large display boards at their Wandsworth showroom or on their new-look website.

First impressions
The different types of front doors
T
he front door can make or break how good your property looks from the outside. People look at a front door before they look at anything else – it reflects what you and others think about the house. A front door must be in keeping with your property planked doors work well on barn or warehouse conversions. But there is no escaping the universal charm of the Georgian front door - solid, well-constructed, but at the same time curiously domestic and welcoming. The classic Georgian combination of solid, panelled door with a glazed fanlight over the top, is just magic.
2 2 4 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0
There are three main types. Firstly you can opt for solid wood. These are built to last, but they do require some upkeep. You’ll need to sand them down and repaint periodically to stop the wood from rotting. And you can change the colour of the door whenever you want. Secondly you can get a uPVC front door. These tend to be a lot cheaper, easy to clean and only need the odd wash and dry to rinse off dirt and dust. And finally you could opt for a composite front door. As the name suggests, they are made from a variety of different materials. The best material is chosen for each part of the door,
providing the best overall performance as a result. Door knobs, knockers and letterboxes should be in keeping with one another and sympathetic to the style of the door. Simple brass ring knockers and “Doctor’s” door knockers are two styles that suit both panelled and plank doors. Lionhead knockers and knobs with ornate embellishment are typical of the Queen Anne period while reeded (ridged) door furniture was used in late Georgian and early Victorian times. Edwardian door furniture is plain, with simple reeding, while Victorian is slightly heavier.
“Security is an important element of any front door. Ideally choose one that offers multipoint locks and have a split spindle design”
Focusing on security Security is an important element of any front door. Ideally choose one that offers multipoint locks and have a split spindle design. This means when you close the door from the outside, the only way of getting back in is to use a key. Multipoint locks should have bolts that move into place by an upward turn of the handle from inside or outside your home. You then use a key to keep in place. In some cases compression bolts are provided in the door, to further secure it into the frame. Clearly the more bolts you have the more secure it will be.
