Hosting Henry VIII:
West Horsley Place will bring to life a festival of Tudor merry-making
This summer, West Horsley Place will transport you back to Tudor times.
Hosting Henry VIII, will be a weeklong festival of events bringing to life the Surrey manor house at the moment the legendary king was entertained there in 1533.
During the festival, on the last week of July, the Stone Hall will be dressed as it was in Tudor times and there will be several interactive experiences that will bring the installation to life for visitors.
It starts with a spectacular weekend festival, full of authentic and well-researched Tudor merrymaking. The scene will be set for a royal banquet with dishes that can be tasted. Visitors will enjoy a host of outdoor recreations including archery, falconry and a magnificent joust.
The festival will capture the sights, sounds and tastes of the remarkable 1533 Tudor country house-party. Visitors will be able to reach-outand-touch living history with specialists on site to conjure up Tudor food, clothing, jewellery and weaponry. There will be entertainments including music and dancing as well as fun for children such as shield making and face painting. Along with historical reenactments there will be plenty of modern food and drink and a chance to shop local art and crafts.
During the week, visitors will have a chance
to sit down with history performers at the Meet Henry VIII event. This intimate event, which will bring Henry to life, will ignite a passion for history in young visitors and children learning about the Tudors in school. Past Pleasures, the UK’s leading customed interpretation specialists, are experts at engaging audiences with the past in meaningful and memorable ways and their Henry VIII will sit down with small groups and tell them all about his life.
Also programmed is a series of talks from fascinating experts in Tudor life. The Head of Research at Historic Royal Palaces, Anthony Musson, will talk about Henry VIII’s visits to this area on Monday, July 29 and best-selling author and historian Alison Weir will discuss how we understand Henry and his character on Wednesday, July 31.
There is music to enjoy from period experts Ensemble Pro Victoria on Thursday, July 30 and on an outdoor theatre production, The Secret Diary of Henry VIII, that will have you laughing your head off!

This showcase garden has been created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Disney’s THE LION KING in London. Since 1999, more than 19 million people have experienced the award-winning musical in London. The Oregon Garden, designed by Sadie May
Stowell, built by SM Corporate Events Ltd. The garden is inspired by the natural beauty of the state of Oregon, with its planting, natural crisp clear water falls and forest planting. The garden will include conifer trees of differing ages to highlight the importance of regenerative travel. Enormous boulders have been used to create the water feature, with some of the boulders weighing up to 1.5tons in weight, to reflect the natural beauty of Oregon’s waterfalls.
Bond Landscape Design: Match Point, designed by Oliver Bond, built by PDC Landscapes. Match Point’s immersive experience explores how a tennis court and clubhouse can be a subtle and beautiful addition to a garden without compromising the landscape’s flora and fauna.
The garden utilises a monographic clubhouse, which allows the green, purple and white planting to take centre stage both inside and out. Vibrant purple plants inspire energy, while the airy and light plants dance and rustle to create a calm space. The water feature adds to the tranquillity of the space and promotes biodiversity. The theme of the garden has been inspired by Wimbledon: The Championship.

Hit Netflix Show, Bridgerton, filmed at Painshill in Surrey
Painshill’s magnificent 18th century landscape garden features in Season 3 of Bridgerton
The hotly anticipated season 3 of Bridgerton is now available to watch on Netflix and eager fans have been counting down the days to enjoy the latest episodes of their favourite show.
This season will focus on the romantic escapades of Penelope Featherington as she decides now is the right time to take a husband, but who will capture Penelope’s heart?
With spectacular scenery and decadent costumes, Bridgerton is a feast for the eyes and is winning rave reviews from audiences all around the world.
Painshill was delighted to welcome back the Netflix team in the autumn of 2022 to film some dramatic scenes for Season 3 of Bridgerton.
This season, four members of Painshill staff had the incredible opportunity to join in the fun by becoming Supporting Artists. The Painshill colleagues submitted their applications to Netflix and were excited when they were called up for costume fitting, hair and makeup. During the filming, the Painshill crew were right in the middle of the action, getting to see how the magic happens behind the scenes!
The week before filming commenced, the Bridgerton team transformed Painshill into a Regency era funfair, complete with stalls, cakes, toys, a maypole, a bar, a Punch and Judy show and many colourful marquees. Hanging over the entire area was a huge, bright green crane carrying a hot air balloon basket. Bright green of course because
it would need to be edited out later and a hot air balloon added in by the talented Netflix editing team.
The attention to detail was so striking, every prop was perfectly placed, every flower arranged beautifully. The Painshill crew learned some wonderful tricks of the trade, such as the fact that the food is sprayed with plastic to make it last longer and many of the marquees hid camera equipment or crew members.
In this latest season of Bridgerton, Painshill features in episode 3, entitled ‘Forces of Nature’. Dramatic scenes unfold when the Hawkins Hot Air Balloon looses control in gusty weather and main character, Colin played by Luke Newton, rushes to prevent a catastrophe from happening.
Painshill previously featured in the first season of Bridgerton when the Duke of Hastings, played by Simon Basset, won a host of admirers with his outstanding performance and dashing good looks.
Many Bridgerton fans have visited Painshill, from far and wide, to enjoy spending time in the same location as their favourite Bridgerton characters. Why not pop along to Painshill to promenade around the landscape and see the locations used for filming?

THE RED ROOM AT THE CONNAUGHT
The Red Room bar at The Connaught, in the heart of Mayfair, is a homage to extraordinary female artists - a hideaway that guests discover through a velvetcurtained doorway from the hotel’s Champagne Room. This cocooning space showcases a collection of creative works in red - by four female visionaries, from one of the most celebrated of our time to a young Vietnamese artist. Alongside the hotel’s renowned bars including The Connaught Bar, rated the world’s best, the Red Room is an entirely different experience for guests. Inside, a collection of art that has been years in the making awaits. Perhaps the most important piece hangs over the central marble fireplace, ‘I
Another piece by Bourgeois is a rubyred hologram, from an untitled series of 8 holographic pieces from 1998. California-based photographer Trina McKillen addresses themes of beauty and ugliness, spirituality and profanity and life and death through her work.
‘Composition #8’ is the only photographical piece amongst the collection. ‘Halfway to Sunset’ dominates another wall - an oil painting by Vietnamese Ti-a Thuy Nguyen from her series Floating in the Nothingness.
The bar is designed by Bryan O’Sullivan, who continues to put his signature stamp on Maybourne drinking spots – creating the space as a ‘home within a home’ with the feel of a collector’s living room – the ultimate sanctuary in magnificent Mayfair. A cocoon-like snug in ombre scarlet allows guests to sit in convivial anonymity.
Food and drink are at the heart of The Red Room, with an impressive list overseen by Daniel Manetti, Director of Wine. The Connaught’s legendary wine cellar features over 3000 different labels and over 30,000 bottles. Rare vintages and first growths arrive by custom-crafted marble trolley – accompanied by a capsule collection of six cocktails, each inspired by the wine selection and developed in tune with the changing seasons.

5 TOP LIGHTING TIPS
Achieve atmospheric lighting in your home with these expert tips from Luke Thomas, Design Director of John Cullen Lighting and James Ratcliffe, Owner of Homeplay:-
1.Avoid downlights arranged in a grid: It is important to relate the position of lights to the furniture and architecture of the space to create a more cohesive and inviting space.
2. Select low glare and discreet lights: Opt for baffled lights so that the light source is concealed from view and attention is drawn to the effect of the light.
3. Use a control system for flexibility and simplicity: Lighting control allows you to quickly and easily adjust the mood and ambiance of any room, adding versatility and control whilst remaining simple for anyone to use.
4. Light outdoor spaces: For open-plan living areas with large expanses of glass to the terrace, avoid the “goldfish bowl” effect at night by considering garden lighting. This will draw the eye beyond the glass and give a sense of space.
5. Use layers of light: This adds depth and texture across a space. Combine ambient, task and accent lighting for the perfect results.

GREENWICH + DOCKLANDS INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL 2024
Friday 23 August to Sunday 8 September 2024
Greenwich+Docklands International Festival (GDIF) 2024 returns to the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Newham and the City of London from Friday 23 August to Sunday 8 September.
The 17-day programme of theatre, circus, dance and performance art is inspired by the theme ALL CHANGE; celebrating change-making activism and artistic innovation whilst reflecting global and local stories of transformation.
Created by Australian physical performance company Legs On The Wall in response to the devastation of the 2019/20 bushfires, THAW is an 8-hour aerial performance on a suspended 2.5
tonne block of ice making its European premiere at the University of East London’s Docklands campus in Newham.
Experienced on the banks of the Thames as the tide comes in, Actors Touring Company’s BODIES OF WATER is based on Warsan Shire’s poem HOME, co-created with local sanctuary seeking people and directed by Olivier-winning director Matthew Xia.
Internationally renowned phenomenon Yoann Bourgeois’ gravity defying creation TOUCH makes its UK premiere at Dancing City, GDIF’s annual outdoor dance festival, which this year moves to Newham in partnership with Sadler’s Wells East, with performances spanning Stratford Cross, East Bank and on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
PATOIS by world-renowned choreographer Jeanefer Jean-Charles MBE is a new GDIF dance commission, and tells a universal story of lost languages, longing and belonging in Woolwich, Abbey Wood, Greenwich and Stratford.
PRAM PEOPLE by Australian company Polyglot fuses audio theatre, live performance and participatory buggy choreography. This European premiere leads a two-day programme of events transforming Stratford Park into a theatrical playground for families.
The full GDIF 2024 programme of over 50 FREE performances, including a spectacular opening night event in Woolwich and a UK premiere in Thamesmead will be announced later this Summer. festival.org/gdif-2024

THE DORCHESTER BLOSSOMS THIS SUMMER
The Dorchester will come into full bloom, marking the launch of the hotel’s summer season, including an experiential AR filter, a sparkling partnership with Wild Idol and the return to Chelsea Flower Show.
A new immersive AR experience
The Dorchester’s famous façade has come to life with The Dorchester Rose, with an immersive AR experience. The QR code, located just outside of The Dorchester Garden, on the hotel’s forecourt, will unlock a bespoke Instagram filter showcasing the hotel’s signature rose. As guests film the façade
The Dorchester Rose vines will grow up the entire hotel and blossom with pale pink flowers. The Dorchester Rose was specially created for The Dorchester by designer florist Philip Hammond in collaboration with Meijer Roses of Holland, a process which took seven years. This blousy bloom reveals deep blush tones as it opens, bringing life and colour to the displays throughout the hotel.
The Dorchester Garden in partnership with Wild Idol
This summer will see the launch of The Dorchester Garden in partnership with premium alcohol-free sparkling brand Wild Idol, a prime spot on the edge of Hyde Park to savour the summer months. The Dorchester Garden will blossom into a pink paradise with pretty parasols and the introduction of a Wild Idol spritz stand to help cool off on the warmer days. A brand new Dorchester ice cream trolley will be rolled out offering seasonal serves alongside a delicate adaptation of afternoon tea from The Promenade. Menu highlights will include the Wild Idol Sgroppino, an elderflower sorbet blended with Wild Idol and afternoon tea pastries inspired by Wild Idol tasting notes. Ensuring that every element of the summer offering has been carefully considered, a seasonal hamper will be available at The Dorchester’s Cake & Flowers for the duration of the summer. It will incorporate the best of the season from the shop, including a seasonal bouquet, a box of bonbons and a perfectly chilled bottle of Wild Idol.
The Dorchester Spa Candle
The Dorchester will launch a unique Dorchester Spa Candle in collaboration with natural and organic Scottish skincare brand, ishga. The Dorchester has partnered with co-founder and lead scientist Malcolm Macrae to develop a bespoke candle that uses waste from the hotel’s signature rose to create this new variety of candle. The uniquely scented candle takes petals that have been previously used in the hotel’s floral displays and gives them a new lease of life, allowing the guest to be immersed in the aromas of The Dorchester’s signature scent at home. The result is an uplifting fragrance of rose absolute, rose geranium and frankincense encapsulating the hotel’s celebration of florals, distilled into a sustainably-minded scented candle. Candles will be available to purchase online and at the hotel.

PRIVATE HAND SURGERY at The Wilson Clinic
Plastic Surgeon, Geoffrey Ross Wilson FRCS FRCS (Plast) says, “Hand surgery has always been an integral part of my practice, and I am now delighted to be operating my Private Hand Surgery Clinic at Epsom Skin Clinic”
Seeing a variety of acute and chronic hand problems, hand pain, or hand deformities no matter what the cause, can be painful and frustrating, especially when it interferes with daily activities such as work, caring for your children and family, driving and exercise. Most hand problems can be rectified fairly easily with surgery, physiotherapy or cortisone injections.
NHS waiting lists can be very long as these conditions are often classed as “non-urgent” Enduring chronic hand pain can very much effect everyday life and be unnecessarily debilitating.
I work very closely with physiotherapists to ensure that whatever treatment you have is followed up with necessary physio treatments, such as splinting and exercise.

SUMMER SKINCARE
Prepare your skin for the shift in seasons.
Once you’ve nailed down the perfect skincare routine, it can be tempting to stick to the same products day in, day out. However, a shift in the seasons may mean that you should consider changing what you apply to your face everyday if you want your skin to look its best.
“As the weather turns more summery, it’s essential to adjust your skincare routine to accommodate the changing environmental factors and the needs of your skin,” says Dr Chandni Rajani, advanced aesthetics doctor and general practitioner.
If you have specific skincare concerns like eczema or acne, you will most likely need to keep the bones of your routine the same. Whilst it can be beneficial to try out new things when attempting to address a specific problem, you don’t want to risk making the issue worse by introducing a load of new products that don’t work for you.
But if you can tell that the shift in seasons has left your skin looking worse than usual, here’s what you’ll want to consider changing for the warmer weather ahead.
Change your moisturiser
“With rising temperatures and increased humidity, opt for a lighter, water-based moisturiser that hydrates without feeling heavy or greasy on the
skin,” suggests Rajani. “Look for formulas with hyaluronic acid or glycerine to provide hydration without clogging pores.”
Ditch heavy serums
“Swap out heavy creams and serums for lighter formulations such as gels or lotions. These are more suitable for warm weather as they absorb quickly and won’t weigh down your skin,” says Rajani.
“Swap out heavy creams and serums for lighter formulations such as gels or lotions”
64 JUNE 2024
Lather on SPF
Changes in temperature are most likely to impact how you alter your skincare routine, but how much time you’re spending outdoors and in the sun is also a hugely important factor to pay attention to.
“Sun protection is crucial year-round, but it’s especially important during spring and summer when UV rays are stronger. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily, and reapply every two hours if you’re outdoors for extended periods,” says Rajani.
Avoid over-cleansing
“With increased sweat and oil production in warmer weather, you may need to cleanse your skin more frequently,” notes Rajani. “However, avoid over-cleansing, which can strip the skin of essential oils and disrupt the moisture barrier.”
There are countless hydrating cleansers on the market which you should opt for to avoid removing too much oil. Opt for a non-foaming cleanser oil or water-based cleanser for best results.
Protect against environmental stressors
“Incorporate antioxidant-rich products into your routine to combat free radical damage from sun exposure,” says Rajani. “Vitamin C serums, for example, can help brighten the skin, even out tone, and protect against environmental stressors.”
If you have acne-prone skin, these types of serums can also help to prevent non-hormonal breakouts. Just be sure not to go for any that are too strong if it is your first time trying out vitamin C or similar.
“Daily environmental protection is essential for healthy, beautiful skin,” reaffirms Dr Mazin Al-Khafaji, leading dermatologist and authority of Chinese medicine. “Use protective products during in the morning, and regenerating products rich with precious actives in the evening.”
Exfoliate regularly
“Regular exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and promote cell turnover, resulting in a smoother complexion,” says Rajani. Although you will want to be exfoliating year-round, it’s likely that the extra suncream and oils on your skin throughout spring and summer will mean you will want to be more diligent with your exfoliating routine.
“Choose exfoliants suitable for your skin type,
such as gentle chemical exfoliants like AHAs or BHAs,” she suggests. Liquid exfoliants are the best type to go for as they won’t cause any harsh abrasion in the way that physical scrubs can.
Stay hydrated
“Daily environmental protection is essential for healthy, beautiful skin, Use protective products during in the morning, and regenerating products rich with precious actives in the evening”
This last tip won’t cost you a penny, but is arguably the most important one of all. “Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Hydration from within complements topical skincare, keeping your skin plump and healthylooking,” says Rajani.
It is likely that you will be sweating more throughout spring and summer, so you need to be extra cautious of your hydration levels – especially on holiday when you are in the sun all day.
Overall, however, “it is best to keep your skincare routine simple, so it can fit into your lifestyle easily,” says Al-Khafaji. Although it can be tempting to invest in the latest trending product or treatment, you don’t want to start using anything that you won’t be able to keep on top of.
Most skincare products will take at least a couple of months to start working their magic, so there is no point buying anything that you think you won’t be able to commit to using or doing on a regular basis for an extended period of time.

TA revolution in skin rejuvenation
DERMAPEN MICRONEEDLING WITH EXOSOMES
At The Cosmetic Doctors Company
he derma roller micro-needling device was first developed almost 20 years ago and remains a popular form of skin rejuvenation for both clinic and home use.
Dermapen is a significant improvement on traditional needling by roller. Dermapen is an electronic, oscillating device with a disposable sterile cartridge of needles at the tip that penetrate vertically as it glides over your skin. This results in super-fine microchannels and
“This ability to deliver anti-ageing products, such as exosomes and growth factors deeping into the skin is now regarded as the major benefit of micro-needling. We believe that the combination of exosomes with Dermapen is a real advance in skin anti-ageing medicine”
much less unnecessary trauma to the skin resulting in a faster recovery. Active serums applied to the skin during micro-needling will penetrate via these microchannels into the deeper layers of skin producing significant improvements compared with conventional topical application. At the Cosmetic Doctors Company we now use a combination of Exosomes and growth factors in conjunction with Dermapen.
Exosomes are microscopic droplets that are naturally produced by our cells. They are cellular messengers containing growth factors, proteins, and mRNA playing a role in communication
“Exosomes are believed to be significantly more powerful than retinol, the current gold standard in skin anti-ageing”
between cells. These trigger cellular repair and rejuvenation.
We recommend two treatments 4 ~ 6 weeks apart for maximum benefit.
The results are not instant; this is about regeneration and longevity.

MODERN FLORALS TREND
Flowery prints don’t have to be predictable.
By Amelia Yeomans
There’s a reason why the fashion set can’t resist bringing out the timeless print during the warmer months. Adding an appropriate dose of colour and interest to any look, there are countless ways to wear florals to make them modern and trendy.
CO-ORDS
Although florals are harder to style than more neutral prints such as stripes or polka dots, the beauty of a flowery print is that it can totally elevate your look in one simple yet timeless step.
Step out of your comfort zone and embrace the modern floral trend with one of these simple yet stylish outfit formulas that will serve you well all through the season.
Co-ords will look chic no matter what print or style you’re wearing, but they work especially well with florals. Rather than a predictable maxi dress for the summer, a co-ord gives a similar feel but with much more edge. Embrace the Gucci-esque style with a statement floral suit, or shop for some floaty trousers and a matching oversized blouse to look and feel cool in the warmer weather. Finish off the look with some neutral or plain accessories, like some black boots and a minimalist handbag, to let the print do the talking and to avoid making your outfit appear too busy.
CLASHING
One of the best ways to make florals look more modern and trendy is by clashing them. This is not a trend for the fainthearted, but when done right, it looks impossibly cool. Simply opt for two different floral prints in your top and bottoms and pair them together for a head-turning ensemble. To make the look feel intentional rather than just thrown together, ensure there are common colours between both items to create a sense of harmony throughout your outfit.
STATEMENT TROUSERS
If you’re new to the florals trend, one of the least intimidating ways to start off is with one statement
item, like trousers. Pairing bright floral trousers with a more minimalist top makes the trend wearable for everyday without being at all boring. If you usually wear jeans day-to-day, look for a blue floral pattern in a similar hue to your favourite denim to ease yourself in. This way, you can also be sure that your statement trousers of choice will fit in with the rest of your capsule wardrobe. Stick to the silhouette of trousers that makes you feel most comfortable and shop for a statement floral style in the same shape. This will help you to look and feel your best when embracing the floral trend.
SWIMWEAR
If you’re still reluctant to add florals into your everyday wardrobe, consider how floral swimwear can liven up your holiday outfit rotation. Less intimidating than investing in a full floral get-up, a floral swimming costume allows you to try out the trend in a subtler manner. Not only will it make a nice change from plain block-coloured swimwear, but floral prints will look even better in the summer sun. There are countless floral bikinis and swimming costumes available on the high street, so this is a way to experiment with the trend without breaking the bank.

Why vitamin E should be part of your skincare regime
Anti-ageing, pollution fighting and blemish calming, Claire Spreadbury discovers why vitamin E beauty is trending.
Vitamin E skincare is nothing new, but there’s been a recent surge in popularity thanks to the ‘glass skin’ trend.
TikTok-ers are posting videos on how to get the look, by using Nivea Creme and a vitamin E oil capsule. Simply mix it together, smother all over your face and glass skin can be yours.
But not all experts believe it’s a good idea, and if you’re worried you may end up looking sweaty rather than dewy, you can reap the benefits simply by investing in products that already contain vitamin E. After all, it’s gorgeously good for all skin types.
“Vitamin E is an important fat-soluble antioxidant and has been used in dermatology for more than 50 years,” says Molly Arnold, a registered associate nutritionist at Holland & Barrett. “It can help protect from negative effects of oxidative stress caused by UV exposure and pollution.”
Sounds great. But perhaps more importantly, she notes vitamin E may also help to reduce blemishes and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles when incorporated into a skincare routine.
Vitamin E is frequently praised for its moisturising, soothing and anti-ageing properties.
“Vitamin E is often found in a cream or oil format that can be used topically, either on the face or on the body,” says Dr Eleanor Bradley, No7 Beauty science credentialing manager. “You can find vitamin E infused in face moisturisers or serums, or in more concentrated ampules often in combination with other antioxidant vitamins, like vitamin C.
“My suggestion would be to incorporate a moisturiser or serum containing vitamin E into your morning skincare routine, to enjoy the full benefits of this ingredient, including protection against free radicals and the environment.”

Vitamin E is not only a powerful antioxidant, but also an effective moisturiser.”

Experts answer your questions about Mammograms
Becoming breast aware and understanding how you can proactively support your own breast health, is important to staying well.
The King Edward VII’s Hospital Breast Health Centre performs breast screening mammograms every day, supported by a whole team of experts. Amelia Cook, Head of Women’s Health at the Centre, answers our questions on what you can expect from a breast screening appointment.
1. Does a mammogram hurt?
A mammogram may be slightly uncomfortable but it shouldn’t be painful. Your breast care team will explain the process fully to you, so you know what to expect from your first mammogram.
Often, patients will ask us if their breasts will be completely ‘squished’ or ‘flattened’. The breasts are firmly compressed when undertaking a mammogram, not just to see the tissue but to also reduce the radiation exposure. This doesn’t hurt, but if you are particularly sensitive to compression, this can feel a bit uncomfortable.
2. How long does a mammogram take to perform?
Each patient is unique and a unique approach for each person is considered. The actual mammogram is very quick and can even be completed in 5 minutes!

minutes, while others have taken an hour. At King Edward’s VII’s you will have the time you need to feel comfortable, with sensitivity to your individual needs. Ask questions during your mammogram – your breast care nurse will be more than happy to provide you with information.
3. Can I go for a mammogram if I have breast implants?
Of course! The breast implant will still remain intact, so you don’t need to worry about your implants being ‘squished’.

4. What happens if I need further testing?
We provide a one stop clinic if any changes are detected to complement and support personalised care and treatment. If there is any cause for concern an ultrasound will be performed and from here a biopsy will be taken to be examined further. Is it OK to wear make-up during exercise?
A new study has looked into what wearing make-up does to the skin when you workout. By Jamel Smith, PA
New research has revealed it is best to not wear make-up during exercise, as it may clog your pores.
A study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology has researched the impact of wearing foundation make-up during exercise on skin and pores.
The study, involving 43 participants who wore make-up on some parts of the face and not on others, showed a “greater increase in moisture” levels on areas where make-up was present, compared to those without. This could result in make-up preventing moisture from evaporating on the skin.
After exercise, the size of pores increased in the areas without make-up, but not as much in the skin sitting beneath the foundation. This may indicate that make-up blocks pores.
“For skin health, it’s best to exercise with your make-up removed,” said the author of the research, Dongsun Park, from the Korean National University of Education.
There was also an increase in oil production in the make-up free areas of the face, and a decrease in the foundation covered areas, suggesting maintaining proper oil levels on the skin could be challenging when wearing make-up.
The skin also became more elastic after exercise for those wearing make-up compared those without.
Grace Day, an aesthetician and skincare expert at Beauty Bay, told the PA news agency that refraining from wearing make-up during exercise may not be feasible for many women, despite the study’s findings.
She advises people avoid using heavy make-up
and suggests bringing a facial cleanser to your place of exercise.
She said: “Not wearing make-up just doesn’t feel possible for many of us, for a huge range of reasons. So, to ensure your skin stays glowing on and off the treadmill, your best bet is to cherrypick the products that won’t be too troublesome to your skin.
“Avoiding heavy make-up, like full coverage foundations, will help to reduce post-workout breakouts. It’s also worth taking your cleanser with you to the gym, so you can cleanse immediately after your session, to get rid of any sweat and bacteria build-up.”
Day delved further into the science behind wearing make-up during exercise.
“The argument for leaving your skin bare at the gym is rooted in the idea that pores remain unclogged and the clean skin can breathe, preventing breakouts that might occur from makeup trapping sweat and bacteria in pores,” she said.
“The increased temperature and sweating caused by exercise opens pores up, which is why they may become blocked by make-up particles, leading to breakouts and uneven skin texture.
“There’s also the contact between feet, hands and the floor, required for activities like yoga, cycling and weightlifting, to take into consideration.”
She added that bacteria found at the gym is “more likely” to cling to make-up than clean skin, especially as people are prone to touching their face multiple times per hour, increasing the likelihood of bacteria settling in pores.
“There was also an increase in oil production in the make-up free areas of the face, and a decrease in the foundation covered areas”

TILE & FLOORING IDEAS FOR LUXURY HOMES
Our striking Bert & May Green
Herringbone Honed Marble Tiles (£159.20 per sq m) feature deep veins and swirls of pistachio and teal tones. With a unique opulent look, they pair well with gold accents in a luxury bathroom
January is a difficult month to love. But after the whirlwind of the festive season, it brings time to take stock, explore new design trends and plan new projects. And family-run, independent online tiles and flooring specialist Hyperion Tiles is here to inspire and inform with premium tile & flooring ideas.
Our director Richard observes: “It’s never too soon to start thinking about how to update your interiors for the year ahead. And there are lots of different ways to use wall and floor tiles – complemented by carefully chosen accessories
– to add some high-end finishing touches to your luxury home decor.”
Here are some of Richard’s recommendations for an upscale interiors makeover:
1. Add texture to walls to create depth, dimension and an innovative point of interest. You can do this with silks, leathers and raffia – but for bathroom areas, use textured ceramic tiles, which are waterproof and hardwearing.
2. Plump for parquet: Synonymous with elegance and wealth, classic parquet flooring is an enduring feature of luxury home decor ideas. Add a twist to traditional herringbone with other patterns, such as chevron or basket weave.
3. Use statement tiles to create a feature wall. They are a fast and cost-effective way to transform a space, and work surprisingly well in bathrooms.
4. Indulge your creative streak with mosaic tiles. Use them sparingly as a border or accent, or transform an entire space with a wall-to-ceiling design.

Mastering the Art of Culinary Organisation
Key Considerations: Everything in its place
The kitchen is probably the most hardworking room in the home, and we ask a lot from it, including the storage of a multitude of items and gadgets, from crockery and cutlery to bread makers and coffee machines. Therefore, it’s worth taking some time to consider the storage needs of your own family and lifestyle at the beginning of a kitchen project.
As a starting point, it makes sense to think about your current or last kitchen and what did or didn’t work storage-wise. Did you have enough space for storing awkward items such as tall pasta jars? Was it a pain to get those weighing scales out from the corner cupboard every time you needed them? Think about items you use regularly so that easy access can be factored into the design. Consider any particularly large items such as appliances, which may require tall housing units to be built into the plan.
Everyone uses their kitchens differently and storage needs for a keen cook or baker may be different from those of a busy family with young children. Therefore, lifestyle also needs to be
Molly Chandler, Designer at Willis & Stone unveils her expert insights on perfecting kitchen storage
factored into the decision-making process. A keen cook may decide on open shelving or dressers to store cookbooks, whereas a large family may need larger appliances such as fridges and freezers for groceries. Customised cabinets, pull-out shelves, and built-in organisers optimise space and cater to individual preferences. Multi-generational living is also on the rise, and homes with multiple generations will require versatile storage solutions to accommodate various cooking styles, preferences, and dietary needs.
Precision Placement: What to put where
Consider the convenience of accessing kitchen items by placing them close to their corresponding usage areas. For example, plan storage around the placement of appliances to streamline the cooking process by positioning pots, pans and utensils near the hob or cooker. Store baking sheets and mixing bowls close to the food prep area and place plate cupboards or drawers in proximity to the dishwasher or serving area. This thoughtful arrangement will help to enhance the flow in the room so that in shared family spaces, there is less chance of entanglement with other family members. Storing items in the areas where they are regularly used, will mean everyone in the family can easily find what they need and use the space efficiently and without irritation.
“Customised cabinets, pull-out shelves, and built-in organisers optimise space and cater to individual preferences”
88 JUNE 2024 KITCHENS & BATHROOMS
While perhaps less glamorous, an essential aspect to consider is the inclusion of bins in your kitchen design. Incorporating pull-out waste and recycling bins not only contributes to maintaining a neat and organised kitchen but also enhances practicality. A strategic placement, such as under the worksurface or within the island unit where food prep occurs, ensures easy disposal of vegetable peelings and other waste directly into the appropriate bins, streamlining the cleanup process.
Drawers or Cupboards: Which is best?
In terms of storage, drawers are most efficient and not opting for enough drawer sets is a common mistake. Drawers allow you to use every layer of the available space, rather than stacking multiple items. Items can often be accessed much easier than a cupboard and using drawer organisers will keep utensils, cutlery, and small kitchen tools neatly separated making items easy to find.
Maximise Kitchen Storage
This is often crucial in smaller kitchens and there are several ways to still ensure plenty of storage, however modest the space. Try exploring multifunctional furniture; for example, if you have seating in the room, consider banquettes with under-seat storage. If you like the look, hanging pot racks are also a good option and not only save cupboard space but can also add a decorative element to your kitchen. Consider adding quality storage racks to the back of cabinet doors to make the most of every inch of cupboard space.
In any size of kitchen, tall cabinets or shelving can also be used to make the most of vertical space. High-level cupboards are great for items that you don’t use daily, like small appliances, cook or serve ware. Customised breakfast cabinets are also very popular now and can include storage for coffee machines and toasters as well as cereals, bread and crockery. Simply shutting the doors makes for a clutter-free space when breakfast is finished, and they can be located close to the seating area for easy access.
Large pantries and back kitchens are also regaining popularity and if you have the room, both offer brilliant extra storage space. Accessible shelving and pull-out baskets are great for making pantry items visible and easily accessible, whereas back kitchens provide a convenient extra space for storage of larger kitchen essentials such as food
mixers, jam pans and larger serving dishes, which are perhaps only used on special occasions.
Tips for Staying Organised and Clutter-free
Declutter your kitchen regularly by assessing kitchen items and donating or discarding items that are broken or no longer used. It’s also a good idea to anticipate future storage needs by designing flexible solutions that can adapt to changing lifestyles. Think about storage for small appliances, technology integration, and potential changes in the household. Tech-savvy individuals may need storage solutions for kitchen gadgets, charging stations, and the integration of smart appliances. Consider incorporating hidden outlets and dedicated spaces for electronic devices. By carefully considering these aspects during the planning phase, you can create a kitchen that is not only functional and stylish but also provides efficient storage solutions tailored to your lifestyle.

Mastering the art of indooroutdoor kitchen design
Summer is officially here, meaning we’re all eager to venture outdoors. Most of us are hoping for glorious sunshine and blue skies, however, this said, we can’t rely on the Great British weather for alfresco dining every day. We can, however, bring the outdoors in and give our kitchens a greater sense of space and calm. We’ve turned to luxury bespoke kitchen company, Tom Howley, for advice on how to design a timeless indoor-outdoor kitchen space. Keep reading to discover the brand’s top tips and tricks.
All in the planning
Planning is vital for creating an indoor-outdoor space that’s perfect for your lifestyle. Tom Howley, Creative Design Director at the eponymous kitchen company, encourages homeowners to consider how they want to allocate the space: “A chill-out zone in your kitchen with comfortable seating is a great idea for families”, says Tom. “Having similar lounge seating outside links the spaces, and using natural materials teamed with moody outdoor lighting will create the ideal place for relaxing at the weekend.”
Seamlessly blend indoors and outdoors
Extending your indoor flooring into the courtyard or patio is an excellent option to merge your interior and garden. “By using the same material throughout, it gives the illusion of one seamless space”, notes Tom. “There are so many options for durable tiles or textured stones that work perfectly.” He continues, “When it comes to kitchen colours, opt for soothing blues or grounding greens for that ultimate sense of cohesion with the garden. These natural shades work beautifully with crisp white worktops that reflect natural light, ensuring your kitchen feels fresh and airy whatever the season.”
Make the most of your view
If you overlook magnificent countryside, an eyecatching coastline or a great garden, Tom invites homeowners to work around these stunning views. “If your kitchen has a lovely view, ensure the furniture layout makes the most of this by orienting towards the view. Your sink doesn’t always have to be positioned looking out to the garden, instead, consider locating your dining area to face the best view in the kitchen, meaning that dinner parties can extend outside into the garden, with all the essentials to hand in the kitchen.”
Optimise your storage
Finally, it is essential to include as much storage as possible without cluttering and compromising the open feel of your indoor-outdoor kitchen. Tom explains, “Think about incorporating discreet storage solutions for fold-away tables and chairs. It makes reaching for seating much easier when the sun comes out and protects your items from the elements. A great kitchen will honour the same principles - ensuring you have ample storage space for all your well-used culinary items.” tomhowley.co.uk

Summer Bathroom Trends
Calypso Bathrooms, leading premium British bathroom furniture brand, proudly launches its highly anticipated collection for 2024. Expanding upon the brand’s already extensive offerings, the launch provides design-led homeowners with an even broader selection of high-quality, trend-led bathroom furniture solutions.
The launch brings texture to the forefront of bathroom design with the introduction of the horizontally fluted Petra, and Levanto Fluted vanity collections. The launch also includes three brand new LED mirrors, Adria, Andrina, and Ostra, which play with shape, and a carefully curated array of new furniture, finishes, brassware, ceramics, and hardware, seamlessly blending traditional style with modern functionality.
Charlotte Tilby, Head of Marketing at Calypso Bathrooms, provides valuable insights into
98 JUNE 2024 KITCHENS & BATHROOMS
five key trends and products from the latest collection.
WONDERFUL WOODGRAINS
The desire for spa like bathrooms has been rapidly growing in recent years with homeowners opting for natural woodgrain finishes, and gentle, rounded lines in bathroom design. This shift has also seen an increasing demand for texture in bathroom furniture such as fluted and slatted wood. Calypso’s new Petra vanity collection offers midcentury sophistication with modern elegance and is available as wall-hung vanity units in two sizes and a matching fluted Tall Wall Unit, available in Coral White, Tortona Oak, and Persian Walnut finishes. The Levanto wave-fronted vanity range also receives a modern update, now available in new layout configurations and finishes with a fluted front design that further enhances the appeal of this popular range.
SEAMLESS SPACES
Increasingly, the boundaries between bath, bed, and dressing spaces are blurring, akin to the openplan concept seen in kitchen, dining, and living areas. As such, cohesive matching furniture across the home has driven demand for a wider array of colour options and finishes in the bathroom than ever before. Think matching your three-piece en-suite to your chest of drawers or wardrobe to create a feeling of expansion and connection throughout the more restful areas of your home. Earthy greens and aquatic blues take the spotlight alongside softer cashmeres and neutrals with pink undertones. Matte finishes have also gained popularity for their tactile, light-diffusing properties, fostering a gentle ambience.
MIRROR, MIRROR
Accessories play a crucial role in transforming a space, such as strategically positioning mirrors to enhance lighting and create a more inviting
atmosphere. Modern LED mirrors have become the go-to-choice amongst homeowners, as they are fantastic at enriching bathroom spaces with soft, ambient lighting and making compact spaces seem more spacious.
MODERN HERITAGE
Homeowners prefer lasting investments over frequent changes, focusing on durable, timeless designs. While paint and decor updates are simple, thoughtful selection of fittings is crucial, especially in less reversible areas like bathrooms. This trend involves updating traditional items with modern colours or finishes, especially in brassware, where alternatives compete with traditional chrome. These finishes subtly modernise bathrooms, even in heritage-style spaces.
DO-ABLE UPDATES
There has been a notable increase in demand for ‘partial refurbs’ over full bathroom redesigns in recent times, with homeowners favouring accessible, simple, updates that cause minimal disruption and create more space in even the most compact of bathrooms. Updating the vanity, adding a mirror, or simply swapping out hardware have become popular solutions, offering a significant transformation without the need for extensive renovations. Within the launch, Calypso provide an array of spacesaving product designs that enhance style and functionality while optimising space. calypsobathrooms.co.uk

Salone del Mobile furniture fair & Milan Design Week 2024
Installations, interiors, exhibitions, energy, furniture, frolics. Yes, it’s the Salone del Mobile furniture fair and Milan Design Week 2024.
With the Milanese streets abuzz with excitement, it’s where luxury interior design and theatricality collide. From immersive installations – exhibits to climb through, light shows set to music, rooms focused on smell and mood, usually-off-limit buildings to explore – furniture found new and creative ways to wow us.
DEEP REDS:
Dive into the full-bodied richness that dominated this year’s Milan showrooms; fruity burgundy/ cherry/oxblood shades that feel intense and energising as well as muted and elegant at the same time. The colours came in all guises, from gleaming lacquer to please-tell-me-where-yourquarry-is heavily veined marble; carried best on forms that were simplistic in
order to let the rich pigment lead the way and set the tone in stone.
LACQUERS:
‘Shinier, glossier, more polished!’ yelled the walkways of Salone del Mobile, and the designers delivered, with hard furniture from dining tables to storage covered in layers of practically mirror-like brilliance at every turn. How does lacquer impact a space? It turns any object into a sculpture, a working reflection-distorting piece of art that draws all eyes in.
Long associated with extravagance and elegance, lacquered furniture has a history of making an impact indoors. This year, lacquered furniture is all about contrast: classic tones such as iconic deep red and dark bottle green are being combined with experimental, contemporary forms, the designs standing monolith-like within a room, awaiting discussion and admiration alike.
“‘Shinier, glossier, more polished!’ yelled the walkways of Salone del Mobile, and the designers delivered, with hard furniture from dining tables to storage covered in layers of practically mirror-like brilliance at every turn”
PADDED & PILLOWY:
Get ready to sink into unadulterated comfort –contemporary furniture is getting super- stuffed. This year’s design cohort of chairs, sofas, footstools, tables and more are voluptuous, curvy designs that aren’t skimping on materials. From cushions on seating that seem over-filled, plush, and puffy to generously shaped hard furniture, this design movement tells the story of cosiness and relaxation where more is oh-so more.
Each piece is outrageously tempting – you can practically feel it enveloping you before you’ve even begun to take a seat. They’re soothing. Welcoming. Each piece is a sanctuary – nothing and no one can get you (possibly even find you) when you’re nestled safely in these soft, cocooning embraces.
PRODUCT FOCUS: DS-888, DE-SEDE
Enter, next-level seating flexibility. Following visually in the footsteps of its much celebrated predecessor: the 1972-designed DS-600, the DS-
888 is similarly snake-like and curvaceous thanks to a set of thin segments. What’s new is the backrest – able to move in multiple directions, the recurrent upholstered ridges can each be customised in height and angle to create individual head and neck support, as well as innovatively sliding along the modular base to be positioned as needed.
“With the DS-888 Collina, we wanted to redefine the limits of what is possible with a modular design and achieve a seating landscape that stands out with its versatility, ergonomics and sophisticated aesthetics.” Monika Walser, CEO of de Sede.
Created for use inside and out, the interior sofa is upholstered in premium leather on a high gloss chrome, or satin black, base frame, while the weatherproof outdoor models are wrapped in durable fabric developed by Kvadrat and The Romo Group on stainless steel frames in finishes such as black silk matt or white silk gloss. chaplins.co.uk

RHS Chelsea Flower Show inspired trends
This year’s show gardens were full of colour and championed the importance of sustainability. By Yolanthe Fawehinmi
From the blend of historical literary inspiration with contemporary design excellence to the use of native plants, there has been an emphasis on sustainability and allowing nature to be itself at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
These are some of the key gardening trends to emerge from this year’s event.
SUSTAINABILITY
According to the chair of The Society of Garden Designers (SGD) Andrew Duff, the main trend at this year’s RHS Chelsea is sustainability.
“It’s become the norm, and I don’t see it as a passing trend. There is a lot of native planting of plants from the UK, which makes it more adaptive. These are like birch trees, native grasses and a big move away from lawns,” said Duff.
“People are more conscious of climate change. We will get a lot more rain as well as increased temperatures, which broadens the level of planting that’s being celebrated.”
The way people are using their gardens has changed, mainly due to the pandemic, Duff said.
“They are enjoying planting again and want to be outside, nurture a living thing in their garden

and see how they can plant their own food and conserve rainwater.
“We can’t continue to water our gardens in the way we are doing. So plants need to be tougher and that’s why British natives are so important. It can also show that it’s okay for the garden to do its thing, which is a refreshing change – the garden is not seen as a big burden as it once was.
“Gardens should be fun and shouldn’t be precious. Families with young children should be able to kick a ball and see bees on plants. Gardens also have other functions, like drying clothes.”
WATER
Landscape designer Tom Massey and architect Je Ahn, who designed The WaterAid Garden, which featured flood and drought-resilient plants to adapt to a changing climate, agreed with Duff.
“There are so many gardens here dealing with sustainable water management, including The WaterAid Garden, which is really all about rainwater harvesting.
“In this country, we had a lot of flooding this winter and in previous summers we have had 40 degrees Celsius heat and drought. So even here, in the UK, this is something we should all be thinking about. It’s really important,” said Massey.
GENTLE GARDENING
‘Gentle gardening’ is a term Massey used to describe another trend to better support biodiversity.
“There are so many gardens here dealing with sustainable water management, including The WaterAid Garden, which is really all about rainwater harvesting”
“Planting that is designed for pollinators and insects. So I think a looser and more gentle approach to gardening, one that is more in tune with nature and moves away from the very clipped, formal and sterile landscapes that maybe we would have seen 10 years ago,” he said.
“This requires less chemical use, being more patient, not demanding perfection immediately, just being a bit more relaxed in the way we approach our gardening.
It’s also about having the right plant and knowing the right location to plant them, Ahn added.
“That’s a really important message. After Covid, more people started to buy house plants and are learning more about how to properly take care of them.
“But people just need to do a little more reading, make use of social media, the enormous amount of resources the RHS have or even work with a professional.”
GROWING YOUR OWN FOOD
Garden designers and passionate growers Lucy Hutchings and Kate Cotterill, who founded their heirloom seed company She Grows Veg in June 2023, have tried their best to get rid of the gardening jargon, avoid using the Latin names and anything else that can put people off from growing their own food.
“Growing your own food can be straightforward,” said Hutchings. “You don’t need a big garden, and can literally sprinkle some lettuce seeds in a pot and leave it by the windowsill.
JUNE 2024 111
And if it doesn’t work or dies, it really doesn’t matter, just have another go. It’s about taking out the fear of failure.
“People have become a lot more conscious of where their food comes from, especially young people. They care and want to know that it hasn’t had too much impact on the planet as well.
“For these reasons, they’ve also realised that they don’t have much control when you buy food from a shop. But if you grow it yourself, you know exactly what happens to it, it’s from nothing but love and you can taste the difference. You know it’s massively nutrient-packed.
“With anything grown, as soon as it’s picked, the nutritional levels start to decrease, so if you pick a fruit or vegetable from your garden or windowsill – wherever you grow it – you can eat it almost straight away and it’s so much better for you.
“People love anything that’s brightly coloured, which has the highest level of nutrients in it. This allows you to eat other things you wouldn’t usually see in the supermarket aisle. Swiss chard is a great example of this, it’s a bit like spinach with a big fat stem, lasts for pretty much a year and it doesn’t die in the winter – a brilliant one for beginner gardeners.”
COLOURFUL PLANTS
A variety of summer plants were used throughout RHS Chelsea, which could mean an increase in
“If you grow it yourself, you know exactly what happens to it, it’s from nothing but love and you can taste the difference:
colourful plants in gardens untill September, including the tall yet familiar Foxglove – also known as Digitalis – and perennials, which featured in many different designs.
“The subtle use of planting colours is a nod to people’s desire to feel more immersed in nature and be part of their countryside. I think there is a link to interiors too, which are becoming bolder and brighter, and often gardens would go the opposite way,” said Duff.
TREES
The power of trees can sometimes be overlooked, especially how they adapt to climate change.
Bonsai, the Japanese art of growing and shaping miniature trees in containers, was also featured at the show.
“We’ve seen a huge increase in people getting into bonsai. If you are suffering from depression or any other mental health issues, this helps you become extroverted instead of introverted,” said amateur grower Nick Payne from The Bonsai Boys.
“When I’m working with my trees, I completely forget about everything. A lot of these trees are pretty old and you can carry them around. They are fed, pruned and looked after very well.”

We are passionate about designing these multi purpose garden buildings for you and our future.
Black mould and condensation issues in homes are regularly in the news at the moment. Natural, breathable materials which allow moisture vapour to move freely through its structure eliminate these issues helping to maintain a comfortable indoor environment.
We use the woody inner core of the hemp plant known as the shiv to construct our buildings.
When this shiv is mixed with water and a lime binder, hempcrete is formed. This natural material is ideal for sustainable construction. Using hempcrete in the building allows for the efficient use of resources while reducing the environmental impact of construction. It is resistant to pests, fire and mould. It is breathable, recyclable and highly insulating, locking up more carbon than is emitted during the building process.
Our studios are custom built in situ. Prices include all works from foundations, electrics and cladding through to decorating. Each studio is built from naturally breathable materials from the hemp structure, the lime plaster and paint on the walls through to the external cladding. Our studios range from Bijou which can be used for your home office or workspace through to Bespoke where with the help of our full design team you can let your imagination run free to create your dream space. A Garden Room: Your Serene Space for Work and Leisure
The allure of garden rooms has flourished, offering a luxurious reprieve from urban clamour in the tranquil confines of our own gardens. These spaces are more than just a trend; they’re a response to the current housing market, where the high cost of moving makes the addition of a garden room a practical choice for many seeking peace and utility in their existing homes.
Garden rooms serve various roles. For the remote worker, they are vital sanctuaries for concentration, while for others, they’re retreats for leisure—spaces for yoga, hobbies, or simply enjoying nature. Beyond their multifunctionality, these rooms are an investment in both personal well-being and property value. They can enhance living space without the need for extensive planning permissions, unlike traditional extensions.
Financially savvy, if used as a home office, garden rooms can be claimed as a business expense, potentially offering tax advantages. They represent an astute choice for professionals desiring to perfect their home-working environment.
When selecting the ideal garden room supplier, you’re not just choosing a structure, but also embracing a sustainable lifestyle. The best providers in the market construct garden rooms using Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPs), a nod to contemporary eco-conscious building practices. This construction is not only friendly to the planet, ensuring a reduced carbon footprint, but also offers robust durability and longevity for your serene outdoor retreat.
In the domain of garden rooms, firms like The Green Rooms stand out for offering a seamless,
full-service solution. They eliminate the complexity of coordinating with various contractors, thereby streamlining your project and conserving both time and effort. With a keen eye for detail and a commitment to precision, these specialists manage every aspect of the journey from design inception to the final unveiling of your garden room. Groundwork, construction, and even detailed aspects like electrical certification fall within their capable hands. Opting for such a turnkey solution is ideal for those seeking a straightforward path to adding a functional, tranquil garden room to their home without the hassle.
In conclusion, the garden room is a testament to modern living, blending aesthetics, practicality, and ecological consideration. It’s an intimate space for growth, reflection, and professional pursuit— truly a room not just in the garden, but also in our hearts.

Sleeping Beauty
Brooding wallpapers with a feminine edge are going to be big news in 2024, according to new research from family-run wallpaper retailer Beautiful Walls.
Using data from Pinterest trends, Beautiful Walls have found that searches for ‘dark feminine bedroom’ are up 50% over the last month, and 400% over the last year.
Tim Dixon, Managing Director of Beautiful Walls, said: “We are seeing a switch on the idea of traditional femininity. Instead of light shades and airy pastels, we are seeing rich jewel tones and moody darks like charcoal and navy being embraced. “The beauty lies in the contrast. Deep colours create a sense of drama and intimacy, a perfect backdrop for layering on the feminine touches. Think floral damasks in unexpected colourways, or textured velvets with a subtle sheen. It’s all about creating a space that feels luxurious, mysterious and utterly unique.” Beautiful Walls has a range of wallpapers which are ideal for creating a dark, sumptuous bedroom. From dark florals to brooding prints, Beautiful Walls has a range of wallpapers ideal for bringing drama to the bedroom, ideal for channelling this trend. Here Tim picks his favourites.

PRETTY IN PINK
Kate Palmer, Creative Director of The Painted Furniture Company talks us through the inspiration behind their beautiful new paint shade, Blossom.
“Refined pastels, in muted and sophisticated tones, are gaining popularity in 2024 and are poised to emerge as the new go-to neutrals of the year. Our latest paint shade, Blossom, is a timeless colour choice driven by a desire for gentle, soothing tones that encourage relaxation and tranquility. This multi-layered pale pink tone has a grown-up feel and perfectly embodies the current trend toward serene and comforting colours; it is full of soft earthy warmth and nostalgic charm, blending vintage and country beautifully, without being overtly delicate or remotely fluffy” explains Kate.
Kate continues “Blossom boasts a rich, dusky pink hue that adds depth to any space, making it a versatile option for use throughout the home. Its soft yet sophisticated tone has quickly made it a favourite for both bedrooms and living areas where it offers a serene ambiance that promotes relaxation and comfort. In bedrooms, Blossom lends a romantic and calming atmosphere, creating a peaceful space conducive to restful sleep.
From a full bedroom suite featuring a bedframe, bedside tables, and wardrobe, to a standalone dresser or accent sideboard, Blossom brings a touch of elegance and charm to painted furniture. Its timeless appeal adds character to any piece, transforming it into a statement focal point within
any room.”
“We offer a variety of wood finishes for the tops on our furniture, ranging from traditional and very popular natural and victorian oak, to modern frosted, moondust, and opaque oak. Our new Blossom shade looks equally effective fully painted or with a contrasting natural oak top where the warm and light honey tones of the wood blend seamlessly with other existing Oak furniture, flooring, or doors in either modern or more traditional homes” concludes Kate.
