Feel ‘The Pull of the Land’ this winter at The Lightbox Gallery

F

ive artists with a shared love of nature come together in a new group show at the award-winning Lightbox Gallery in Woking from the 21st November to 10th December. Having met initially during COVID-19 lockdown in various online artist forums, artists Anne Winstanley Wood, Claire Hankey, Debbie Tearle, Emma Tweedie, and Sarah Cox discovered they all shared the same passion for nature and the outdoors. As this theme is central to all their artistic practices, they formed a plan to come together and present a special pop-up art exhibition, which celebrates and brings to life their different approaches and responses to nature. The group exhibition will be presented in the Art Fund Prize Gallery on the ground floor. From reimagined landscapes that evoke sensory memories, expressive landscapes inspired by the Surrey Hills, abstract paintings inspired by nature walks and childhood memories, paintings which explore the effect of nature on human consciousness, to artworks which seek to capture the elemental spirit and energy of places, the land sea and sky have inspired all of the artists. When searching for a title for the exhibition, ‘The Pull of the Land’ was the unanimous favourite. Each of the works on display has been exclusively created to work within the gallery space at the Lightbox, with the artists having regular meetings online to check in on painting progress, colours, and, of course, the final curation. With an impressive 20 metres of wall space, this

contemporary space provides the perfect backdrop for this nature-inspired show. “Working remotely definitely came with challenges, as some of us live pretty far from each other, but it has been fascinating not only to see the overall body of work develop but also to connect with a group of like-minded artists who all love nature so much, “ says Sarah Cox. I’ve enjoyed this process as it’s not only been a creative journey but also brilliant from a social aspect. We have all gotten to know each other well by working collaboratively. I’ve loved what each of us as individuals has brought to the table,” says Emma Tweedie. The Lightbox is a charitable arts and heritage organisation with a social purpose to improve its community’s well-being and quality of life.

SECURITY

WESTMINSTER SECURITY Professionals In Protection…Always On Guard.

“They are typically from a military or police background using their vast training and experience to blend in and keep clients safe from danger”

T

he world has never been a more dangerous place in modern times, feeling vulnerable and let down by police and government security services to protect them, more people are turning to private security for their property and personal protection. Close protection is a specialist security service often thought to be the reserve of the ‘rich and famous’. However, in the face of police cutbacks, an increase in crime, and global terrorism, close protection services have become ever more popular with families and business owners. So, what is close protection and what does it

28 NOVEMBER 2023

entail? Close protection more commonly referred to as bodyguard services, or personal protection, is the provision of physical personal security to protect a person or group of people from harm or attack be it targeted, a general local threat, perceived or inherited threat and risk. Essentially, it is hiring bodyguards. Not your stereotypical burly bodyguard romanticised and depicted in TV and film, but a discrete nonimposing, non-threatening, professional close protection operative (CPO) embedded with a family or company that does not draw unwanted or unwarranted attention by undesirables. They are typically from a military or police background using their vast training and experience to blend in and keep clients safe from danger. Despite how bodyguards are perceived, close protection operatives do not spend each day fighting toe-to-toe with enemies. Research and planning are key, identifying potential threats and risks, and avoiding any verbal or physical altercations at all costs. Real-world bodyguards can blend in as family members, work colleagues, drivers, PAs, or nannies. Female bodyguards are increasingly popular with high-net-worth families for their stealth ability and emotional intelligence. With close protection being such a vital service for high-profile and high-risk individuals and families it is important to hire bodyguards through a highly credible, experienced, and established security company that is licensed and insured to provide such services. It is worth noting that household staffing agencies cannot legally satisfy these prerequisites. Westminster Security is a leading close protection company in the UK providing an array of personal security services in London, throughout the home counties, and beyond. GABRIELLE CHANEL: Fashion Manifesto

Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel was the first superstar fashion designer, says curator of V&A exhibition. By Katie Wright

A

s well as introducing groundbreaking garments for women, Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel embodied her brand in a way no other designer had done before, a new exhibition highlights. Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto – at London’s V&A Museum – traces the life and work of the famed French designer, who was born in the Loire Valley in 1883 and taught to sew by nuns in the orphanage to which she was sent aged 11, when her mother died. “Before her, designers weren’t really known,” says Oriole Cullen, curator of modern textiles and fashion and the V&A. “Their names were known, but they weren’t visible figures within society.” Starting out as a seamstress and cabaret singer, before establishing herself as milliner, Chanel later turned her focus to couture fashion and began designing casual clothing for women, inspired by the menswear of the era. “The Chanel brand as it stands [today] is really based on these ideas that she ushered in 100 years ago,” Cullen says, which is where the exhibition 34 NOVEMBER 2023

title comes from. “The meaning of that is really about a template that Gabrielle Chanel set out at the very beginning of her design career and came back to, reimagined and reinvented throughout her long career of sixty years.” Bringing together nearly 200 outfits, the show features items from the opening of her first millinery boutique in Paris in 1910, to the showing of her final collection, two weeks after she died in 1971. Signature designs on display include little black dresses, tweed suits and quilted leather handbags – the most iconic of which is the 2.55 bag. “The 2.55 has never really gone out of fashion since she designed it in 1955,” Cullen says. “That is fascinating in terms of high fashion, that an object can stay the course for such a long time and still be relevant.” Part of the upper echelons of French society, Chanel initially relied on wealthy lovers, such as French ex-cavalry officer Etienne Balsan and English polo player Arthur Edward ‘Boy’ Capel

PERFECT SHOT Women have been shooting in dresses for hundreds of years, but shooting-specific tailoring for us has never been a thing - we’ve only ever been given the Gentlemen’s section in a smaller size. As someone from BASC once told me so succinctly - they just “shrink it and pink it.” Austuin does things wildly differently. We just make whatever we actually want to wear, and then add on all of the shooting bits you need, like suede patches, recoil pads and big cartridge pockets. The brand takes influence from all corners of country life - from Austin to Austen. austuin.com

Black magic: Go back to black this season

with the catwalk-inspired trend It’s all about a dose of dark drama for autumn/winter, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

rends come and go, but if you had to bet all your chips on one colour never going out of fashion, you can bank on black. And as designers ditch colour in their collections and crave the fluid, liquid lines of fashion’s darkest and most addictive shade, you can embrace moodboosting monochrome and jet black without any fear of making a fashion faux pas – or bad buy. From a showy shoulder at Balmain – who would have thought that a PVC maxi dress could look even more sultry? …To sexy, slinky sequins at Michael Kors; tailored, long black coats (LBC) at Max Mara, Dolce & Gabbana, Victoria Beckham and Prada, black is more than a shot in the dark this season – and the devil is in the detail. To get the catwalk look, here’s what’s hot on the high street and will make a great first impression…

BLACK BLAZER Call it the power blazer, Le Smoking, or straightforward tailored trouser suit, this is your wardrobe staple to look sharp. “The trouser suit is an icon of sophistication and confidence,” says Zoe de Abreu, co-founder of Ro&Zo. “A black blazer matched with trousers will be the perfect companion for all occasions, as it transcends perfectly from day to night.” For a dare-to-bare aesthetic, go topless underneath – apart from a sexy black bralette – and accessorise with a cosmic choker or pukka set of pearls.

opines de Abreu. She says this trend is elegant and feminine, and can be worn in a range of textures, such as jersey, velvet and Merino wool. Moreover, baring a shoulder is very flattering – the neckline lengthens the neck, frames the face – and is a great transitional, versatile piece with a good measure of va-va-voom.

LUXE LACE Ladylike lace has been reimagined with trims adorning jersey and velvet – and it’s made a beeline for the little black dress. Whether a flattering midi dress is crafted from a luxuriously soft jersey that contours your curves, “A delicate lace-tiered hem adds a dramatic finishing touch,” says Karen Peacock, chief creative officer and co-founder, Albaray. Or embellished on the neckline and hemline of velvet, sheer lace channels some vintage charm with the X-factor. In fact, if you’re feeling thrifty, be inspired by ribbon and trim shops and think about sewing a lace trim on an existing black dress for an instant update.

LONG BLACK COAT A long black coat may not set your pulse racing, but the LBC took to the runway in its droves, with designers making it a key piece in their collections. And let’s face it, nothing looks more elegant or grown-up than wrapping yourself in wool. Just make sure it’s calf-length or longer. As Peacock puts it: “A sharply tailored black coat is a true investment piece, which is both functional and stylish.” “With the ability to style casually or formally, it will be a go-to during the colder months for years to come.” BLACK JERSEY ONE SHOULDER TOP; OMBRE SEQUIN SKIRT, RO&ZO.

BELTED LONG COAT, BLACK, NEXT

SPARKLE Whether you go full-out sequins or dazzle in rhinestones, a sexy shimmer is where it’s at. “For autumn, sequins really capture the essence of festivity, allure and drama,” notes de Abreu. “Sequins are all about adding a touch of glamour to your look, and letting your outfit take the centre stage.” Moreover, “A flattering silhouette is created with a sequin halter top and matching flared trousers,” says Peacock. “Wear together to make a statement, or dress down and style with jeans or a simple T-shirt,” she adds. When should men be concerned about weeing in the night?

O

ver a quarter of men frequently get up in the night to wee, but only fifth of them realise this could signal a problem with their prostate.

• 28% of men get up to use the toilet at least three times, with around a quarter (24%) of them saying their sleep quality is poor as a result • 1 in 5 (20%) of them think this has something to do with their prostate, with just under 3 in 10 (29%) putting it down to simple old age • Overall, over a half (55%) say they suffer from a symptom which could indicate a problem with their prostate, yet around two fifths (43%) would avoid seeing the doctor • Independent charitable hospital King Edward VII’s Hospital are urging men to keep their health in check

88 NOVEMBER 2023

Many men ignore weeing in the night but using the toilet three times or more could indicate a problem with their prostate. This is according to new research from independent charitable hospital King Edward VII’s Hospital, which found that a quarter of men (28%) suffer from unusual nocturia. And, only 1 in 5 (20%) of men who get up in the night to wee at least 3 times consider that this could be down to a problem with their prostate, with just under 3 in 10 of them thinking it’s just because they’re getting old (29%), over a fifth believing it’s because they drink too much water before they go to bed (21%), and a similar number attributing it to their nightly caffeine intake (20%). In total, 55% of men report a symptom which could suggest problems with their prostate including a quarter dribbling at the end of weeing (25%), just

over a seventh incompletely emptying their bladder (15%) or struggling to start weeing (14%). Yet, more than two fifths of them wouldn’t see a doctor (43%), with 35% of them worried about having to have an intimate exam (35%), and a similar proportion (34%) shirking their GP due to embarrassment. Worryingly, 29% of those who have had the symptoms of pain with urination or bloody urine wouldn’t see their GP.

“It’s important that men who are struggling with an issue with pain, delayed or frequent weeing to see their GP” PROFESSOR CAROLINE MOORE Caroline Moore, at King Edward VII’s Hospital, is urging men to visit their GP if they are struggling with an embarrassing issue: “We are used to seeing men with a wide range of symptoms that they mind find embarrassing – so there really is nothing that can shock us. “It’s important that men who are struggling with an issue with pain, delayed or frequent weeing to see their GP at their earliest convenience. Most of the time it will be caused by something harmless that can be fixed by a change in lifestyle, such as drinking less alcohol or caffeine.” “When there is a more serious problem at play, such as an enlarged prostate or cancer, we have a wide variety of diagnostic and treatment tools available, such as a state-of-the-art HoLEP technique which can help manage an enlarged prostate, or focal therapies for prostate cancer, such as High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound (HIFU) or Nano Knife.”

VISITING THE GP FOR PROSTATE CANCER WORRIES THE DETAILS If you’re concerned about your prostate health and considering a private screening with a GP, call a member of the dedicated patient services team at King Edward VII’s Hospital to discuss your options: Mon- Fri 0203 930 1392 or visit kingedwardvii.co.uk

When you visit your GP, you’re bound to have lots of questions, so it’s helpful to write them down or to take someone else with you who can help you ask everything you want to. It’s also helpful to be prepared with a description of the symptoms you’re experiencing, when you experience them, how often and how long you’ve had them. Your GP will also ask if you have a family history of cancer, so it’s worth knowing if you have a close relative who’s had cancer of any kind. Once you’ve had a chat with your GP, you can then decide if you’d like to be tested for prostate cancer. If you do, then your GP will have a number of tests they can perform. NOVEMBER 2023 89

that pass the test of time

Step into a world of timeless elegance and design innovation as we explore the enchanting realm of iconic 20th-century pendant lights. These luminous forms not only brighten the home but also serve as unforgettable symbols of an era marked by artistic expression and avant-garde creativity. technology, pendants have come to encompass both functionality and the understanding of light’s power to alter the environment, as well as be a visual focus point. Designers explored innovative ways to manipulate incandescence and electricity, experimenting with materials, textures, and finishes, evolving pendants not only as sources of luminosity but also as expressions of artistry. From the ornate gas lamps of the 19th century to the 20th century’s streamlined mid-century forms, each era has left its distinctive mark on pendant light legacy with unforgettable, standout concepts. These iconic pendants have become timeless symbols of innovation, embodying the spirit of their respective epochs while continuing to inspire and captivate with their enduring beauty and functional brilliance. Whether enduring classics that transcend eras or symbolic pieces of the periods in which they were conceived, our curated selection of iconic pendant lighting is a journey through the evolution of design and illumination. Each piece is a testament to the creative genius of its time, ensuring that it will never go out of style. Together they form a gallery of fixtures that not only brighten the home but also narrate the tapestry of design history.

hen darkness draws in, it’s lighting that transforms our spaces into homes: cosy sanctuaries we look forward to all day and bask in into the evening. For decades, the centre-of-the-room pendant has been ‘the main light’, ‘the big light’ – and while floor, table and wall lighting has had its moment (and is vital to light-layering), focus is now back on what’s hanging from the ceiling. The pendant light is unique as a design object. Suspended with only a slim wire, it’s not limited by the pull of gravity or the need to support itself, and is viewed from 360-degrees, presenting an unusual creative challenge and opportunity. Simultaneously projecting and directing as well as filtering light and protecting eyes from glare, pendants must combine the decorative and the sculptural with the practical, setting the room’s ambiance with its soft, bright, warm, cool, focused or dispersed glow as well as being aesthetically pleasing in its own right. The perfect pendant. It’s a task designers have been perfecting since light came from oil and wax. As lighting developed alongside 108 NOVEMBER 2023

STILNOVO

“Suspended with only a slim wire, it’s not limited by the pull of gravity or the need to support itself, and is viewed from 360-degrees”

Sputnik Suspension Lamp Designed in 1957, Stilnovo’s Sputnik Suspension Lamp is a striking embodiment of mid-century modernism that has endured as a bold and timeless icon. Inspired – unsurprisingly – by the space age and the launch of the first artificial satellite, the pendant is composed of celestial-style radiating arms, each tipped with a glowing bulb, capturing the era’s fascination with all things cosmic. Now a cherished symbol of progressive 20th century design, it infuses spaces with a charming sense of the retro-futuristic.

LOUIS POULSEN PH 5 Pendant Light Created by revered Danish architect and designer

Poul Henningsen in 1958, the Louis Poulsen PH 5 Pendant Light revolutionised the way we perceive and use light. A lasting symbol of eternal elegance and lighting innovation, the PH5 combines functional brilliance with aesthetic beauty, its arrangement of layered, curved shades ensuring even illumination while minimising glare, its recognisable silhouette placing it in the design history book as shining example of Danish creative excellence.

VERPAN Fun 11DM Pendant Light Verner Panton First produced in 1964 by avant-garde Danish design visionary Verner Panton, the Verpan 11DM Pendant Light transcends convention with its mesmeric creativity. Dripping with cascading mother of pearl discs, the pendant evokes a sense of otherworldly allure, which is heightened when the discs flutter in the breeze. The playful yet elegant design dances between the realms of sculpture and lighting, casting an entrancing, ethereal glow when illuminated, and announcing the piece an emblem of the mid-century modern design era’s spirit of experimentation.

GUBI Multi-Lite Pendant Light Devised by innovative Danish designer Louis Weisdorf in 1972, Gubi’s Multi-Lite Pendant

Light is all about customisation. Its two shades can be independently rotated to adjust the direction and spread of the light to create different effects and atmospheres within a room – upwards for a soft, ambient glow, down for a more focused beam, or artistically arranged simply to look good. Seamlessly blending form and function, the inimitable pendant is a symbol of mid-century modern design’s timelessness and adaptability.

FLOS Viscontea Pendant Light Created in 1960 by the celebrated Italian design brothers Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, the Flos Viscontea Pendant Light attains its iconic status through a harmonious fusion of art and illumination. Inspired by the cocoon of the silkworm, it casts a soft and ethereal lighting effect that diffuses warm and gentle illumination, its organic aesthetic giving it the feel of a contemporary design despite its grand age.

&TRADITION Utzon JU1 Pendant Light Developed in 1947 by ground-breaking Danish architect (and Sydney Opera House designer) Jørn Utzon, the &Tradition Utzon JU1 Pendant Light encapsulates the eternal essence of Danish design. Drawing inspiration from the elegant simplicity of nature, its distinctive, sculptural shape exudes a sense of beauty and tranquillity. Diffusing soft, ambient light while serving as a captivating focal point, it transcends eras and zietgeist with its graceful aesthetic an effortless blend of art and utility.

FRITZ HANSEN Kaiser idell Pendant Light Conceived by pioneering German designer Christian Dell in 1931, Fritz Hansen’s Kaiser Idell pendant is a masterpiece of Modernist design that embodies the elegance of pure simplicity. A testament to the Bauhaus principle of form following function, its renowned domed shade casts focused and glare-free illumination with easy minimalism. Its status as an icon of design excellence endures, a testament to the influence of Bauhaus design principles. chaplins.co.uk NOVEMBER 2023 109

Christmas at Stubbings Garden Centre W

ith so much choice, it is difficult sometimes to decide where to buy your Christmas Tree and whether or not it is better to buy real, artificial or potted. Stubbings Garden Centre to the west of Maidenhead, only sell sustainably sourced Christmas trees. The team recently travelled up to Scotland to meet their main grower and see for themselves the eco-credentials as well as hand pick a fine Christmas tree crop for this year’s range. The Stubbings Christmas tree collection is reputed to be the finest and largest in the area and, having supplied local households for over 25 years, has become the go-to destination for quality and choice. This year, you’ll find six different varieties for sale with the entire range available to purchase instore and online. Unlike artificial trees, real trees are biodegradable and are a renewable resource. Real trees have a very small associated carbon footprint and benefit the environment by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and releasing clean oxygen. However, pot-grown trees are also a good option because, after the season has finished, these trees can be planted in your garden.

“Real trees are biodegradable and are a renewable resource” Stubbings organise tree recycling at their site and support the amazing charity, One Tree Planted, who plant a tree in the Amazon Rainforest for each Christmas tree sold in the season. No visit is complete without a trip to the Stubbings Christmas Boutique - a treasure trove of festive decorations and lights with products from designers such as Gisela Graham, Giftware Trading and many more. There are also a number of festive events planned for Christmas 2023. You can catch up with friends, family and colleagues for a Festive Afternoon Tea in the glasshouse café, the kids can meet Santa for Breakfast and there is free entry for visitors to the popular Winter Market. Premier Equestrian Property in Royal Berkshire T he South-East boasts some wonderful countryside, so little wonder it has such strong connections to equestrianism. From show jumping to racing to polo, there’s plenty happening. It’s no surprise then that this area is home to numerous equestrian properties. For horse lovers, not much appeals more than waking up and walking out of your house, right into your very own stables. However, that can require compromise - the property doesn’t always match up to the facilities provided for our equine friends. But that’s not always the case… We took a peek behind the gates at a stunning example of a bespoke equestrian facility and converted farmhouse where ‘compromise’ is a dirty word. Nestled in the Berkshire countryside between Paley Street and Hawthorn Hill, this lavishly renovated Grade II listed farmhouse and extensive equestrian facility is set in 3 acres of grounds. Transforming Old Pools W

hen we think about a luxury swimming pool, a new pool springs to mind. However, each year thousands of older pools are upgraded or remodelled by pool specialists. We use our skills and expertise to transform even badly damaged pools. If you are looking at your old pool and wondering whether to refurbish or start from scratch with a new build, consider whether, overall, you still like your pool. If the answer is yes, refurbishment is an excellent way to modernise your old pool - it takes less time than building a new pool and costs less. Pool refurbishment ranges from large-scale transformations of dilapidated pools to simple upgrades such as replacing an old or torn liner with a contemporary design that creates a beautiful new look for a pool. You can restore anything on an older pool including the concrete, external and internal finishes, and underwater lights. You can upgrade plant room equipment including the water filtration and circulation system and heating systems which are vital to keeping the pool clean and healthy. Upgrading to modern, energy-efficient equipment is good for the pool, better for the environment and helps to reduce running costs. While pool refurbishment is often required because of repair issues, it can also be an opportunity to remodel your pool. For instance, you can adapt you pool as your needs evolve. An older pool may become too small, too big, too shallow, or too deep for your needs 20 years after installation. In addition to addressing the fundamental pool refurbishment, you can also look at adding fabulous new elements such as water features, hydro massage jets, underwater speakers or a counter-current unit which allows you to swim against a current. 128 NOVEMBER 2023

“Pool refurbishment ranges from largescale transformations of dilapidated pools to simple upgrades such as replacing an old or torn liner with a contemporary design that creates a beautiful new look for a pool”

A well-planned pool update will create a fresh look and extend the life of the pool. A sprucedup pool will stay special for a long time, will rejuvenate your leisure time, and enhance the value of your property. Hire a reputable pool contractor with a proven track record in pool refurbishment and work closely with them throughout the whole process. Once your beautifully refurbished pool is recommissioned, continue with a regular professional pool servicing programme to ensure that the pool remains healthy and is always ready to use. If the pool was out of action prior to refurbishment, arrange a regular pool servicing schedule. This way you can ensure your pool stays in peak condition. londonswimmingpools.com

RACHEL USHER INTERIOR DESIGN Creating immersive and bespoke luxury interiors

D

esigning an ultra-modern family home that has a strong architectural presence within a town which is steeped in Medieval history. An inspiring, ultra-modern and unexpected interior scheme has been created by Rachel Usher and her team of interior architects and designers. The family’s brief was to create a sanctuary in which they could escape their busy lifestyles and entertain to use the large-scale space to it’s full potential. The re-design transformed their living area to create a new open-plan kitchen, dining, living and snug. The Rachel Usher studio also re-designed the interior architecture including transforming the hallway, staircase and bathroom to ensure that the space flows seamlessly. This unique family home is an unexpected juxtaposition against the backdrop of this historical context. When the property was built, the family paid respect to the localities history by curating a home with an architectural palette compromising of natural stone and timber cladding to respect the Medieval association of the land and to reflect the materials used in a nearby castle. The property’s scale and award-winning architecture challenged the design team to create an interior scheme that both enhanced the property as a whole and complemented the existing vernacular of the building. Rachel Usher takes a human centric approach to all of the work that her studio delivers with

the intention of enhancing how the homeowners interact with their space. Unravelling how the flow of human activity works on a day to day basis in order to better understand how this reads against the opportunities for enhancing emotional connectivity within the home, this in turn will establish the creative direction for the design team. A compelling design was achieved through the re-imagination of the space, opening up existing apertures to maximise perspectives from differing viewpoints and flooding the space with an abundance of natural light. Synonymous with a Rachel Usher Interior Design is the interaction of materials evident throughout all of the bespoke hand-crafted joinery, including shadow gap detailing and hidden light sources to highlight texture and contrast. The final scheme was brought together with the appropriate application of light, texture and materiality. rachelusherinteriordesign.com
