West Horsley Place Open Days
If you haven’t explored West Horsley Place yet, then now is the time to look at their Open Days and events. The charming Manor House and formal gardens are open to the public all year around for a programme that includes guided tours, performances, talks and creative courses.
At the end of this month is one of their most popular events in the calendar: the Arts and Artisan Christmas Fair. Situated across the Manor House and Barn, a visitor can soak up the festive atmosphere while shopping for beautiful gifts. The fair brings together only the very best artists and artisans in Surrey to offer unique and stunning presents. This year it runs Friday, November 22 until Sunday, November 24.
Once a month the Manor House has an Open Day, which is the perfect introduction to the amazing history of the house and formal gardens. Tickets are available online to explore the site and uncover over 600 years of stories.
On Sunday, December 1st there will be a Christmas Open Day. It is a chance to see the magical building while it is decorated for the
festive season. Each room will highlight a different period of history, with re-enactment specialists in the Tudor Kitchen to bring 16th century celebrations to life. Try Tudor food samples and talk to them about how Henry VIII might have enjoyed his time at West Horsley Place. In other rooms you can explore Christmas 1939 when 40 evacuees lived in the Manor House and discover how the Victorian period shaped Christmas decorations.
In January, the Open Day will be themed as a 1930s country house party. Find out more about the lavish life of Lord and Lady Crewe who invited many leading figures of the day to join them for dinner, including Ian Fleming and Queen Mary. Head upstairs to dance to popular 1930s songs and downstairs to find out more about the West Horsley Place servants who made it all happen. Their February Open Day is for those celebrating Jane Austen’s 250th birthday as they go back in time to the Regency. Take a dancing class with Mrs Bennett’s Ballroom dancers and enjoy an exhibition of some wonderful books written by remarkable women writers of the period.

Surrey Artist of the Year 2024
In a vibrant celebration of local talent, Guildford-based artist Rosalinda Kightley has been crowned Surrey Artist of the Year 2024 at Farnham’s New Ashgate Gallery. Chosen through a unique democratic process involving 586 votes cast by the public and a panel of esteemed judges, the award honours Surrey’s outstanding artistic contributions as part of Farnham’s October Craft Month.
The prestigious title, awarded in partnership with Surrey Artists Open Studios, highlights Rosalinda’s captivating work, which draws on her background in illustration and is inspired by Surrey’s countryside and urban scenes. Working primarily in acrylics, her paintings are known for their vibrant colour palettes and rich textural quality, bringing still-life compositions and everyday landscapes to life in a way that resonates with viewers.
Rosalinda expressed her joy at receiving the award: “Thrilled and excited to have been picked from the many talented artists beavering away quietly in their studios throughout Surrey. Recognition is a vital component that keeps us going through doubt, jubilation, and just general ‘am I really any good?’ moments. So thank you all for your votes and encouragement, it’s greatly appreciated.”
Dr Outi Remes, Director of the New Ashgate Gallery, expressed her pride in this year’s winner and finalists: “The Surrey Artist of the Year award
embodies the creativity and community spirit of Farnham, a World Craft Town. This year’s finalists have impressed us with their dedication, diversity, and talent. Rosalinda Kightley, along with runnerups Claire Kent and Colette Moscati, exemplify the incredible calibre of Surrey’s artistic community.”
The two runner-ups also presented remarkable work, each adding to the event’s celebration of artistic diversity:
• Claire Kent, a textile artist from Dorking, explores natural themes through bold, contemporary textile compositions.
• Colette Moscati, a painter based in Farnham, brings a modern approach to traditional subjects, often exploring the effects of light in nature.
Rosalinda will showcase her work in a solo exhibition at the New Ashgate Gallery in September 2025, allowing art lovers to experience her richly detailed, expressive landscapes up close
In addition to a solo, Rosalinda is awarded a bursary of £2,000 for her creative development.

CLASSIC ATTRACTION
Historics’ classic car auction on 23rd November offers tempting choices
As of 31st August, there were some 1.2 million electric cars silently plying our roads. Yet to many a car enthusiast, it’s a statistic that’s eclipsed by the fact that there are nearly twice as many cars in regular use in the UK that were first registered 20 years ago and more.
This is the realm of the classic and collector car enthusiast, expertly catered for by Historics Auctioneers.
The lure of cars of yesteryear is well known to Historics, one of the UK’s foremost classic car auction specialists, some 12,000 hugely varied classic and collector cars having passed beneath the auctioneer’s gavel since 2010.
Historics’ upcoming winter auction at MercedesBenz World, Brooklands near Weybridge, on Saturday 23rd November, is a superb reflection of the amazing breadth of choice to those interested and engaged in classic car ownership.
The age of the 175 captivating cars on sale in the sleek and inviting setting of Mercedes-Benz World spans nearly a century, and includes fine examples from some 40 different marques. And when it comes to cost, Historics serves up an appetising menu that caters for a widely varying depth of pocket, from highly affordable to enormously collectible classic exotica, and all inbetween.
To many, British sports cars of the 60’s and 70’s
take the limelight, the enduring popularity of such iconic brands as Austin Healey, MG and Triumph being due not only to their immense character but by the fact that they are modest in terms of maintenance costs, with spares being readily available. At the November sale, a 1971 MG B Roadster, offered enticingly without reserve, waves the flag immaculately for the affordable genre of ‘everyday’ classics.
Catering for more exotic tastes, the likes of Aston Martin, Bentley, Jaguar and Rolls-Royce are all well represented at Historics’ five annual sales, and it’s no different here at the Mercedes-Benz World auction.
Early consignments include a duo of emotive Aston Martins by way of a 1991 Aston Martin Virage, whilst for those interested in the ‘DB’ dynasty, there’s an alluring Aston Martin DB9 of 2005 vintage.
These are representative of a fast-growing classic car sector, that of ‘modern classics’. It’s proving immensely popular in attracting younger buyers to whom greater creature comfort over older classics, plus all-round performance are frequently the lure.
Historics sells a greatest number of classic Mercedes-Benz models of any in the UK and, not surprisingly, the true stalwart of premium classic cars is well represented, including an imperious 1960 Mercedes-Benz 190SL Roadster. But to some the choice just has be a classic Jaguar... Coventry’s finest is celebrated here by a lovely collection of models including a glorious 1952 Jaguar XK120 Roadster.
THE DETAILS
To appreciate the full depth and breadth of classics on sale at this fascinating auction, visit Historics’ website where you’ll find details of all entries and the all-important preregistration to bid. historics.co.uk.
The Saturday 23rd November auction, starting at 9.30am, is preceded by three full viewing days at the venue, giving the opportunity to thoroughly inspect all entries at close quarters. Entry is by catalogue, available on the door.

Have you visited ‘Surrey’s Hidden Gem’ The Sculpture Park?
For art lovers, collectors, sculptors, photographers and nature enthusiasts - The Sculpture Park in Churt is a hidden gem. From the gates you may not expect the treasures that lie within. Upon entering the 10-acre site, nestled in the heart of the Surrey Hills, you are transported into a magical world of water gardens, woodlands and incredible sculptures.
A folly nestles above a waterfall, a giant tarantula towers over a winding path and varied works of art create a myriad of photo opportunities throughout the park. Three lakes complement the park’s diverse landscape and are home to an abundance of water creatures and unusual sculptural features.
An eclectic mix of sculptures from national and international artists are on display for all to see, giving the talented artists a platform to be
recognised and appreciated. From up and coming local sculptors, to well established globally recognised names, artists come from far and wide to display their work in this picturesque outdoor gallery. water, amongst the bushes and high in the trees.
Biggie Chikodzai, resident Zimbabwean sculptor, brings the largest UK exhibition of Shona sculpture to The Sculpture Park, which can be enjoyed and purchased throughout the year. This also helps to support the artists back in Africa.
Shona sculpture is the name given to a modern movement of stone carved sculpture created in Zimbabwe. It gets its name from the ‘Shona’ tribe of people who are the largest in Zimbabwe. The country itself gets its name thanks to the Shona people’s long artisan tradition of stone working.
Nearly all sculptures throughout The Sculpture Park and indoor gallery are available to purchase. Advice on choice, installation and delivery can be given by expert staff. So keep your eye out for the sculpture that sings to you and you could have it in your own garden by the very next day!
The park is a family business, founded in 2001 by local businessman Eddie Powell. At the time of purchase it was undeveloped land that Eddie and his team set about the mammoth task of landscaping. It now welcomes well over 30,000 visitors a year, visiting from all corners of the globe. It is open every day, all year round (sometimes even Christmas Day!) and is worth seeing at any time of year as the landscape evolves with the seasons.

ARE YOU SURE YOU’RE INSURED?
When choosing home insurance, more often than not we go for the quickest or cheapest option, perhaps not totally confident but hoping for the best. Whilst this approach might seem like the most convenient at renewal, there’s a risk of rushing and not considering the quality of cover on offer or the actual value of our possessions, assuming an ‘off-the-shelf’ product will provide adequate protection.
In reality, insurance is far from a one-size fits all scenario.
Estimating the value of our homes and contents isn’t something we do regularly and it can be easy to forget or dismiss things. But inaccurately calculating the rebuild cost or the total value of your contents could leave you open to the risk of being underinsured.
Underinsurance is when the amount you’re covered for by your insurance is less than the
cost of replacing or repairing your contents or belongings. It can result in claims of damage or loss being only partially met or not at all by insurance.
It’s particularly important that those who live in larger, higher value homes or have expensive items – perhaps jewellery, fine art or collections –are mindful that standard insurance may not fully protect them or include features such as agreed values and access to specialist repair/ replacement services.
So how can you avoid underinsurance?
Go through each room accounting for anything you would need to replace in event of a claim – include things like soft furnishings, curtains and furniture, as well as the high-value items like technology.
• Estimate the cost if you had to buy new, rather than the price you paid.
• Consider whether the value has changed for any antiques or art collections.
• Don’t forget items in storage, in a safe or at the bank.
• Check your policy for any set limits for valuables and single items such as jewellery.
• Review your cover regularly and if you’re unsure, talk things through with a professional.

Christmas at Silent Pool Gin
Give the gift of luxury this Christmas with Silent Pool Gin, an award winning spirit that’s handcrafted and distilled in the Surrey Hills.
10 YEARS OF DISTILLING
The Silent Pool Gin distillery is adjacent to the beautiful Silent Pool in Albury, Surrey. The distillery was founded in 2014 with the aim of creating an exceptional gin that captured the very essence of the Silent Pool and the stunning Surrey Hills that surround the site.
The result is Silent Pool Gin - an exquisite blend of 24 botanicals including local honey, lavender, rose, chamomile and elderflower. Initially launched at local farmers’ markets in Surrey, Silent Pool Gin quickly gained popularity amongst local fans. Word spread quickly, and it is now exported around the world.
Limited edition Silent Pool Ten Year Celebration Edition Gin is a tribute to the passion, dedication and artistry that has defined the Silent Pool Distillery in the last ten years.
The Celebration Edition botanical recipe has been specifically crafted to highlight delicious notes of pear - a nod to the earliest days at the distillery producing pear eau de vie. This distinctive botanical brings a unique depth to the gin and celebrates where the journey started, and how far the distillery has come.
VISIT THE DISTILLERY
The distillery shop is open seven days a week - the full Silent Pool Gin range is available to taste and buy, alongside the beautiful Christmas Gifting range.
You can also book onto an award-winning 90-minute distillery tour and take a deep dive into the world of gin, led by a knowledgeable tour guide.
Festive distillery tours are available in the week before Christmas - complete with a cocktail and Silent Pool Gin bauble to take home, or you can enjoy a ‘Perfect Pairings for Christmas’ wine and gin tasting experience in collaboration with the distillery’s neighbour, Albury Vineyard.
And if you’re shopping in Guildford, then make sure to pop into the Silent Pool Gin Store on White Lion Walk.

Award Winning Patisserie & Chocolaterie
We talk to Chris Bachmann from Bachmann’s Patisserie
Why is Christmas special at Bachmanns?
I think it comes down to our products- we make such a variety of Christmas specialities that everyone who comes through the doors can find something special they like to give as a gift or treat themselves. Over the years we have built up an ever growing long fan base of a “Bachmanns Christmas”. Our regular customers always make a trip in December to see what my team have created, and the shop is always busy during Advent, when we the shops look so festive.
What sells best at Christmas?
That’s a difficult one! It changes from year to year if I’m honest. We make Stollen, Christmas Puddings, Christmas Cakes, Mince Pies, Christmas Petits fours, and a bewildering array of Chocolate Christmas products. If I had to pick out favourites, it would be difficult to be honest, but our Prune and Cognac Tart was previously named as the best Christmas Cake or dessert in the UK, and more recently, our Lebkuchen was named the best gingerbread, so I guess I’m particularly proud of those. A few years ago we won a national Design
award for our Chocolate Christmas pudding- it’s a bit like an Easter Egg in concept , with crunchy almond chocolates inside, and I always take one home for my two boys at Christmas- that’s a really fun product. Our products are only available in the month before Christmas so that makes it special, but also a challenge!
“Tell us a little about the history of Bachmanns”
My Dad started the business with my Mum in Thames Ditton in 1989. After training in Switzerland he’d enjoyed a stellar career in confectionary including stints as the executive pastry chef at the Dorchester and The Park Lane Intercontinental, and the Chief confectioner at the Swiss centre in Leicester Square. He wanted to create the kind of local shop that they have in Switzerland; a store that covers all aspects of chocolate and confectionary, at the highest of standards. Since it has started, Bachmanns Patisserie has gone on to win over 30 national awards, so I guess you can say he achieved that. I think that the real reason that we have been so successful over the years, and what I think sets us apart from many places, is the variety and sheer excellence of his recipes. Our products have a simplicity and clarity of flavour that is hard to match, and we do take care to never compromise on the quality of our ingredients. Across the year, we make over 450 different products, and change them through the seasons, so anyone will be able to find a favourite, and it keeps it exciting for our regular customers.
I took over the business just over ten years ago, on his retirement, but he still provides my team with inspiration and guidance- in fact he’s in Thames Ditton right now making our German Lebkuchen (gingerbread)!
A few years back we opened our second store in Weybridge, which was very exciting. It has allowed us to expand- we now have about twenty staff- and had the space to create a special separate chocolate room there, where we produce all our chocolates. The two sites both have their own pastry kitchen and they run in tandem, with each site specialising in certain areas, but all our products are hand finished every morning in both shops. It was a doubling of size and a huge investment for us. So far it has been a great success, and it’s been very satisfying – and a relief(!) to watch the business grow.

The Ultimate Experience for Passionate Home Cooks
Picture this: you’ve booked the ultimate Gordon Ramsay experience: his signature Beef Wellington – the showstopping centerpiece to your next dinner party!
Arriving on the day of the class, you step out of the wintry temperatures into a friendly welcome at the Academy, followed by a hot coffee to chase off the cold. You head upstairs where you’re met with the toughest choice of the day: do you opt for the Chill Lounge to relax and watch Gordon creating tasty treats on the big screen, or do you instead take a trip around the culinary world in a Cookbook Library with over 1,000 different books to choose from?
Before you know it, it’s time to don your apron, roll up your sleeves and create your own masterpiece! The class will take you through seasonal recipes, packed with flavour and covering new and old skills alike. This winter’s menu includes a delicious mushroom risotto – paired with a crisp glass of wine, that’s lunch covered! It also features Poires Belle Hélène – not forgetting a fluffy Chantilly cream.
It’s easy to relax straight into the experience, with ingredients already weighed out, and not an ounce of washing up in sight! You can focus
instead on creating each step of the recipes, guided by a friendly chef teacher. Each class is generously seasoned with tips from experienced chefs, to make sure you get the perfect result every time!
Now for the main event – the showstopping Beef Wellington. Step one: sear off your Chateaubriand and smother it in a rich mushroom duxelles. Step two: wrap them in a delicate crèpe, made from scratch (of course!). The grand finale? Rolling your Wellington and dressing it in a beautiful latticed pastry to add that touch of Ramsay magic.
You’ll have the chance to taste the Wellington made during the class by the chef, accompanied by a rich red wine jus, glazed carrots and garlic mash – enough to get your tastebuds tingling!
As with all of the Academy classes, the fun doesn’t finish at the end of the experience – your full Wellington is yours to take home and share with loved ones, along with your new found skills, confidence and (just in case!) recipe packs from the day.
There are over 60 different classes to choose from, to cater for even the most discerning palette – speak to the Academy team to find the perfect fit for you!

Autumn nail trends
Here are the prettiest polish trends you should try this month.
By Lara Owen
Autumn is the season when nail designs come into their own. Perhaps with more time to spend inside, cosy sweater weather and Halloween festivities on the horizon, now is the perfect time to try a new mesmerising mani.
This autumn calls upon burgundies, chocolate brown, burnt oranges and deep earth tones. Yet, for the more daring among us, 3D details and stiletto pointed tips are trending again: perfect to dress up any autumn nail look.
We hear from celebrity manicurists on the top autumn manicures you should try this season.
BLACK CHERRY
Plums, aubergines and burgundies have been trending this season – but this palette is certainly not confined to clothes. When it comes to nails, ‘black cherry’ seems to be reigning supreme this autumn. “Dark, gorgeous shades such as espresso, black cherry and deep moody greys are the colours du jour this season, direct from New York and London Fashion Weeks,” says Robbie Tomkins, celebrity manicurist to the likes of Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer and Olivia Colman. Black cherry treads a fine line between being deep but not too deep: a combination of burgundy with a touch of dark chocolate. Just as the name of the trend suggests, black cherry nails are inspired by the sweet fruit, and are a low-maintenance and sexy look to sport this season.
MOODY AURAS
October is seeing an increase in popularity of the aura nail, says Tomkins, thanks to the trend’s versatility and moody ambience. “Aura nails are back, and with the help of any eyeshadow palette and a matte topcoat, they can even be achieved with normal nail polish,” says Tomkins. According to Tomkins, the trend is perfect for those wanting to experiment at home without having to go to the salon. “To achieve the look, just paint on a thin base coat, two coats of your favourite colour, and finish with a matte topcoat. Wait at least an hour for this to dry, then using a sponge applicator, gently apply a little of a contrasting colour of eye shadow to the centre of the nail, and finish with a glossy top coat.”
STRIKING STILETTOS
When it comes to shape, the clean-girl, short and neat nails are out. For this autumn, the longer nails are back in. If you’re wanting to achieve long, strong nails without using acrylics, Tomkins recommends investing in at-home treatments.
“Invest in a quality nail strengthening treatment, such as Protein Formula Strengthen Treatment.
“They have four different formulas altogether, each targeting specific nail issues, and the brand has created an online nail diagnostic quiz to tell you which one would suit you best.”
3D JELLY AND EMBELLISHMENT
This season’s trends aren’t all smooth and simple however, for those wanting to make a statement, jelly-like details and embellishments are making waves online, especially when it comes to celebrity manicures. “It’s the perfect way to add personality and glamour to your nails for a special occasion,” says Lily Collins’ nail tech at Paint Nails London, Angie Campbell. “This is the trend for anyone who loves eye-catching nails that shift and change with the light. The translucent nature of jelly nails feels fun and fresh, and is the perfect antidote to grey autumn days.

WHAT FRAGRANCE TO WEAR DEPENDING ON YOUR STYLE
Here are expert tips on matching your perfume to your outfit. By Lara Owen
Fragrance makes up an essential part of your personal style. When searching for your signature scent, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the abundance of perfumes out there, from classics by the likes of Chanel and Dior, to lesser-known gems from Dossier and Diptyque.
So, where do you begin when trying to suss out a scent that suits your style? Beyond practical considerations – such as whether it’s officeappropriate or how long it lasts on the skin – the best perfumes are those that smell beautiful to you and conjure a range of emotions as a result.
That comes down to science. Here’s what to look for when finding the perfect perfume to suit your style, according to experts.
WHERE DO I START?
Shopping for fragrances has become increasingly difficult in recent times, with the rise of online shopping, finding you signature scent is more of a task than a treat.
The easy part about shopping for fragrance as opposed to make-up is that you can’t go wrong.
“Searching for the one is like a game you can’t lose – each single fragrance you try will bring you closer to the understanding of what works for you or what doesn’t,” says Oriflame’s fragrance specialist, Anya Pavlenko.
The Fragrance Shop’s Rachel Goalby says you should start with understanding the science behind your fragrance. “When searching for your signature scent, start by learning how fragrances are layered.
“Top notes are what you smell first, usually lighter and fresher; heart notes follow, creating the main body of the fragrance, often floral or spicy; and base notes are the deep, lasting scents, like woods, amber, or musk.”
MATCHING YOUR SCENT TO YOUR STYLE
Cottage-core
If you adore the soft, pastoral charm of the ‘cottage-core’ aesthetic, fragrances that evoke warmth and natural surroundings are key.
FLORAL STREET WILD VANILLA ORCHID EAU DE PARFUM - 50ML, £74
DOSSIER FLORAL ROSE EAU DE PARFUM - 50ML, £39
CHLOÉ NOMADE EAU DE TOILETTE30ML, £44 (WAS £55), LOOK FANTASTIC
RABANNE MILLION GOLD FOR HER EAU DE PARFUM 50ML, £95, THE FRAGRANCE SHOP
“Look for scents that evoke cosiness and warmth,” says Floral Street’s founder, Michelle Feeney. When it comes to notes, “The combination of natural vanilla with jasmine gives a comforting yet confident vibe, like a warm hug.”
Classic scents like Lancôme’s La Vie Est Belle are good examples, while Maison Noir’s Claudio Denz suggests, “a herbal essence to a fragrance that embodies the free-spirited and natural vibe of cottage-core is key when pairing.”
If you’re wanting a less-sweet and more earthy scent, look for notes like amber, cedar and tonka bean.
Corporate siren
If you’re wanting to channel a more Devil Wears Prada ‘corporate siren’ approach, you’re probably looking to exude sophistication and elegance.
“When it comes to ‘office-appropriate’ scents –the territory seems to be quite subjective, with no clear rules,” says Pavlenko. “But think about it this way: if your colleagues can guess you are already in the office because of the strong trail of perfume they detected in the elevator, you might want to reconsider your choices!”
“Think fresher fragrances with uplifting floralfruity combos to keep your energy high while lasting the whole working day,” Pavlenko advises.
If you’re wanting something strong, “Boss Alive by Hugo Boss is a good choice,” says Goalby. “With its bold mix of plum, apple and vanilla, this fragrance commands attention without overwhelming the senses, just like a confident professional.”
Edgy maximalist
If your style leans into the leopard print, red lipstick look donned by the likes of Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne, then an unapologetic fragrance should follow suit.
“Rabanne Million Gold always brings necessary drama with its intoxicating blend of rose, white flower bouquet and mineral musk – perfect for someone unafraid to make a statement,” says Goalby.
“Yet, Jean-Paul Gaultier Scandal is another great fit, with its rich combination of honey, blood orange, and patchouli,” Goalby adds, “a scent that’s as daring and unpredictable as your fashion choices.”
If you want something less dramatic, “Try a
fragrance that has some surprising notes that are more playful,” advises Feeney. Something warm and floral, with notes of amber works best for a sultry but cool look.
Breezy boho
For the free-spirited among us, something light, earthy and effortless is the scent to match the boho aesthetic.
Yet when it comes to looking effortless, “The first rule? Don’t try too hard to look cool,” says Pavlenko. “Combination of skin-like musks with addictive, creamy sandalwood and the occasional touch of fruits will help you to keep it casual with an effortless bohemian touch.”
The pioneering brand of boho, Chloé, has a great set of fragrances to perfectly embody the look. “Chloé Nomade is a beautiful match, with its notes of oak moss, Mirabelle plum and freesia, it evokes a sense of wanderlust and freedom,” says Goalby.
“If you’re seeking something a bit more floral, Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia captures the essence of a carefree bohemian day with its blend of pear blossom, red berries and gardenia – both grounded and graceful.
THE KEY TO FINDING YOUR SIGNATURE SCENT
“When choosing a signature scent, think about how you want to feel and how you want others to perceive you,” says Goalby.
“Ultimately, your signature scent should feel like a second skin – one that expresses your personality and makes you feel good about yourself, whether that’s cosy, bold, or effortlessly chic!”

The creation of balanced and nutritious meals is enriched by the sourcing of top-quality produce, most of which comes from trusted local suppliers – fruit and vegetables from Bracknell, fish from Ascot, meat from butchers in Oxfordshire and Maidenhead all play their part.

TA revolution in skin rejuvenation
DERMAPEN MICRONEEDLING WITH EXOSOMES
At The Cosmetic Doctors Company
he derma roller micro-needling device was first developed almost 20 years ago and remains a popular form of skin rejuvenation for both clinic and home use.
Dermapen is a significant improvement on traditional needling by roller. Dermapen is an electronic, oscillating device with a disposable sterile cartridge of needles at the tip that penetrate vertically as it glides over your skin. This results in super-fine microchannels and
“This ability to deliver anti-ageing products, such as exosomes and growth factors deeping into the skin is now regarded as the major benefit of micro-needling.
We believe that the combination of exosomes with Dermapen is a real advance in skin anti-ageing medicine”
much less unnecessary trauma to the skin resulting in a faster recovery. Active serums applied to the skin during micro-needling will penetrate via these microchannels into the deeper layers of skin producing significant improvements compared with conventional topical application. At the Cosmetic Doctors Company we now use a combination of Exosomes and growth factors in conjunction with Dermapen.
Exosomes are microscopic droplets that are naturally produced by our cells. They are cellular messengers containing growth factors, proteins, and mRNA playing a role in communication
“Exosomes are believed to be significantly more powerful than retinol, the current gold standard in skin anti-ageing”
between cells. These trigger cellular repair and rejuvenation.
We recommend two treatments 4 ~ 6 weeks apart for maximum benefit.
The results are not instant; this is about regeneration and longevity.

DIAGNOSING PROSTATE CANCER: WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR GP
It can be confusing for men to know whether they should be checked for prostate cancer and having any symptoms that might be related to prostate cancer can be worrying. If you’re concerned about prostate cancer, there are tests that can be carried out by your medical specialist to check for any signs of the disease.
Consultant Urologist at King Edward VII’s Hospital, Professor Caroline Moore, explains some of the initial tests that may be used to check for prostate cancer.
TESTS AT YOUR GP
When you visit your GP, it’s helpful to bring a description of the symptoms you’re experiencing, when you experience, how often and how long you’ve had them and any family history of prostate cancer.
Urine Test
Your GP will ask you to produce a urine sample which can be tested for a signs of an infection – this may be done there using a dipstick test or sent away for analysis at a laboratory. If you don’t

have a urine infection, you will be offered further tests for prostate cancer.
Rectal Examination
Depending on your symptoms, your doctor may think it’s necessary to perform a digital rectal examination (DRE). This will involve your doctor feeling inside your rectum using a gloved finger, to feel for any abnormalities. Prostate abnormalities include an enlarged prostate or a prostate that feels hard or lumpy.
You will be lying on your left side with your knees pulled up to your chest. You will be asked to remove your lower clothing and underwear, but your bottom half will be covered with a paper towel.
You shouldn’t feel any pain, but you may feel some slight discomfort or embarrassment. Your doctor will use some lubricating gel to make the procedure less uncomfortable. They may apply some pressure to your prostate gland which shouldn’t feel uncomfortable but may give you an urge to pass urine.
Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test
A PSA blood test is a common test for prostate cancer. Your blood will be tested for the presence of a protein that’s produced by the prostate and the results will take a few days. The prostate produces this protein whether it’s healthy or has become cancerous, so most men will have a certain amount of this protein in their blood.
However, if a PSA blood test result is very high, referred to as a raised PSA level, it may be an indicator that you have prostate cancer. Having a raised PSA level doesn’t necessarily mean that you have prostate cancer though, and could be a sign of an infection, prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) or an enlarged prostate.
As many as three in four men with a raised PSA level do not have prostate cancer. For this reason, a raised PSA level is not usually used on its own to diagnose prostate cancer.
A PSA blood test can sometimes also miss prostate cancer, which is why your doctor will also perform a digital rectal exam and urine test to collate a series of results.

examination and the PSA blood test are often used together by doctors to assess a person’s risk of having or developing prostate cancer, along with factors such as age, family history and general health and wellbeing. When all of these factors are considered together, it gives doctors a clearer idea of the possibility of prostate cancer. If your results and factors combined suggest that you may possibly have prostate cancer, you will be referred to a specialist hospital doctor called a urologist. Your urologist will then perform some further tests such as MRI scans, ultrasounds and potentially biopsies.

LIGHTING REPORT
As darkness draws in, and with a renewed focus on the ambiance and feel of our homes, lighting design is under the spotlight, shaping the atmosphere in ways that go far beyond pure illumination. As technology, craft and imagination intersect, lights are now so much more than just functional – they have become statement pieces that reflect individual style and set the tone of a space. From sculptural forms that demand attention and create drama to calming designs that draw on the home’s ever-increasing connection to nature, lighting is evolving to enhance not just how we see a room, but how we experience it.
For 2024, lighting trends are pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation, with an emphasis on unique forms, expressive design and a contemporary connection to nature. Whether it’s bold, futuristic structures or a spectrum of colours from dramatic to calm, lighting has become an art form in its own right. As the design world increasingly moves towards curating spaces that feel personal and meaningful, lighting has evolved into an essential tool to transform a space from
every day to exceptional – and not only with luminescence. Here’s where contemporary pendant lights, table lights, floor lights, wall lights and more are heading.
TIMBER TOUCH:
Sleek materials like glass and metal often define lighting design, but the introduction of timber brings a soothing warmth, infusing nature into the modern home. Juxtaposing the soft pattern of grain and timber’s alluring organic texture with modern technology creates a captivating balance between nature and innovation. One element feels artisanal and ancient, the other, precise and industrial. Together, they form a fusion that feels both timeless and forward-thinking, inviting us to bask in the tactile beauty of the natural world alongside the precision of contemporary design.
OPAQUE DIFFUSION:
“The introduction of timber brings a soothing warmth, infusing nature into the modern home”
Clear bulbs? Not anymore. Modern designs favor opaque, misty, white-toned glass, emitting soft, diffused light that transforms a room into a serene, tranquil haven. The subtle white-ness adds understated elegance while offering space for
experimentation. Oversized and artistic, these glass bulbs, often perched on minimalist bases, seem to defy gravity, creating focal points that elevate a room’s ambiance. It’s all about the mood they set, rather than their understated aesthetic appeal.
THE ART OF LIGHTING:
Is it a bird? A plane? No, it’s a sculptural designer floor lamp. Lighting is evolving beyond function, prioritizing bold, artistic statements over pure illumination. Gone are the days of task lights—now, freestanding lamps embrace originality and creative form. From gravity-defying designs to totem-like structures, lighting pushes boundaries, transforming into art pieces rather than mere light sources. Expect ever-bolder designs as our perceptions of what a lamp should be continue to shift.
SOFT ROSE:
The pastel lighting colour of the moment? A delicate rose pink takes the spotlight, adding subtle, sugary charm to interiors. This nearlyneutral tone brings playful sweetness without overwhelming, blending effortlessly with white or clear glass. Often featured in pared-back shapes or on smaller accents, this soft hue shines with understated whimsy, transforming lighting into both functional pieces and artful statements that sprinkle spaces with joy.
LINEAR LIGHTING:
Today’s pendant lights shed utilitarian vibes,
favouring elongated, eye-level designs that illuminate entire surfaces—ideal for dining tables or islands. These streamlined pieces replace rows of matching pendants, cutting back on ceiling support and wiring. Designs range from minimal, thin lines to thicker tubes, with options for ornamental bulbs and shades. Efficient-yetbold, they balance simplicity with unexpected details, playfully breaking from uniformity to add personality and brightness to interiors.
HONEY HUED:
This season, honeyed tones take the spotlight in lighting design, casting a soothing glow even when switched off. These rich, golden hues evoke sunset warmth, autumn leaves, and candlelight, infusing spaces with natural comfort. Modern pieces feature all-over golden finishes, often in smooth, rounded shapes reminiscent of honey dips. Large or subtle, honey-hued lights bring an organic, nature-inspired touch indoors, exuding a golden warmth that feels timeless and serene.
PRIMARY BRIGHTS:
Seeking colourful, modern lighting with punch? Primary tones – pillar-box red, sunshine yellow, Yves Klein blue – are ideal. These bold brights demand attention, each adding drama and energy; combine all three for a dynamic, lively atmosphere to invigorate any room. Designs range from chunky, commanding forms to sleek, understated shapes that showcase colour in subtler ways. Primary-coloured lights add personality and flair, serving as eye-catching, conversation-starting focal points and practical sources of illumination for a vibrant, audacious mood. chaplins.co.uk

Every project expanded his expertise and skill set, and his work now blends traditional crafts with modern techniques to create truly unique, collectable pieces that can be found in the homes of the elite worldwide.

Transforming Your Bathroom: How Tiles Can Make a Big Difference
When it comes to updating your bathroom, tiles can be a game-changer. Beyond their practical function, tiles hold the power to redefine the look, feel, and functionality of your space. Senior Designer Alfie, from Ripples Beaconsfield explains how bathroom tiles can make a significant impact on your bathroom.
Tiles are a versatile design element that can set the tone for your bathroom’s aesthetics. Whether you’re aiming for a sleek modern look or a classic vintage charm, tiles offer endless possibilities.
• Modern Appeal: Large-format tiles in neutral tones create a clean, contemporary appearance, making the space feel open and airy.
• Timeless Elegance: Classic subway tiles or intricate mosaic patterns provide a sophisticated and enduring style.
• Bold Statements: Vibrant colors and patterns can serve as focal points, adding character and a personal touch to the space.
Enhancing Visual Appeal
The aesthetic appeal of your bathroom can be significantly improved with tiles. Their diversity in style promotes artistic expression and can support the development of a unified aesthetic. There are several approaches to integrating them into your bathroom. Using feature walls composed of textured or patterned tiles is one way to create a beautiful focal point. The second is to select floor tiles that are strong, low maintenance, and visually striking. The third is to concentrate on tiling the
area behind the washbasin or bathtub to add visual appeal and shield the walls from dampness.
Creating a Sense of Space
Tiles can also influence how spacious or cozy a bathroom feels. Light-colored tiles and large formats can make smaller bathrooms appear larger, while darker or patterned tiles can add warmth and intimacy to more expansive spaces.
• Small Bathrooms: Light and neutral tiles can visually expand the space, making it feel more open and inviting.
• Large Bathrooms: Rich textures and bold designs can make large bathrooms feel more intimate and comfortable
Adding Luxury and Comfort
Tiles can elevate the luxury and comfort of your bathroom. Features like heated floors or natural stone tiles can transform a standard bathroom into a spa-like retreat.
Tiles are more than just a functional element; they’re a transformative design feature that can elevate the style, functionality, and comfort of your bathroom. By choosing the right tiles, you can create a space that not only meets your needs but also reflects your personal style and adds a touch of luxury to your daily routine.
Latest Innovations
Loop Associates has opened a new showroom in Esher, where anyone looking to bring smart technology into their home, create a home cinema or are renovating can see the latest innovations in the world of sound, lighting, and visual solutions. We caught up with Technical Director Steve Harper ahead of an exclusive opening event for our readers. We discovered the team’s philosophy is simple: technology should enhance, not interrupt, the tranquility of home life.
1. CIRCADIAN RHYTHM LIGHTING
Imagine your home’s lighting naturally shifting throughout the day to match the sun’s natural rhythm, making mornings feel bright and energizing with cool light, and evenings warm and calming, perfect for winding down. This clever circadian rhythm lighting adjusts the color temperature of your lights to support your wellbeing, far more effectively than traditional fixed lighting. This promotes better sleep patterns and creates the ideal atmosphere for both busy family mornings and relaxing evenings—keeping your home in sync with nature, effortlessly.
2. HOME CINEMA
Turn movie night into a full-on cinema experience, right in your own home! The latest home cinema innovations are all about luxury and ease, offering everything from voice-activated lighting to hidden surround sound systems that immerse you in every scene. Picture yourself settling in for a film, your mobile-free zone keeping distractions at bay, while the lights dim automatically, and the screen lights up, all without you having to leave the sofa.
3. DIGITAL ARTWORKS
Transform the artwork in your home at the touch of a button. With digital art displays, you can shift the mood of your space effortlessly— whether it’s a calming landscape for a serene morning or bold abstract pieces to match an evening gathering. These innovative displays allow you to curate your environment based on the season, time of day, or even your personal mood, creating an ever-changing gallery in your living room.
4. SPATIAL AUDIO
Spatial audio is no longer just for inside the home—it’s making its way outdoors, too, transforming gardens into immersive soundscapes. Inside, spatial audio enhances every room by delivering rich, multi-directional sound, whether you’re watching a film or listening to music. Outside, it can be used to create a soothing ambiance in the garden with natureinspired sounds or gentle music that blends seamlessly into the environment.

Enjoy nature’s time to plant this Autumn
As the summer flowers fade, Autumn is the perfect time to refresh your garden. Autumn is nature’s planting season so there is plenty you can do to create stunning late-season colour. The warm and moist soil conditions provide the perfect planting environment to help roots establish, resulting in healthier, stronger plants. It is a time to tidy, rake, deadhead and clear beds of any debris. Stubbings Garden Centre, just outside Maidenhead, is a hidden gem with its well-stocked quality plants and a cosy glasshouse Café. Their knowledgeable and friendly staff will give you advice on what is in bloom this time of year to brighten up your outdoor space.
You can add splashes of colour to patios, balconies, beds and even around your front door with Autumn-flowering bedding plants. Plant spring flowering bulbs now for a garden bursting with beautiful flowers early next year. It is a great idea to select bulbs that flower at different times to give you colour throughout the season (early spring: daffodils, late-flowering: tulips and alliums).
Improve your soil with organic matter such as compost or manure to retain moisture, supress weeds and help your plants thrive. Stubbings
Garden Centre have a great range of peat free options to help your garden thrive and can even deliver locally.
Now is also the perfect time for planting fruit, both soft fruit (including raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries and rhubarb) and fruit trees (such as apples, pears, plums and cherries).
For inspiration and ideas, visit Stubbings Garden Centre to make the most of your garden this season. It is located just to the west side of Maidenhead off the A404M, 5-10 minutes from both the M4 and M40.

The Rise of Garden Studios: A versatile Solution for Modern Living
Garden studios have gained significant popularity in recent years, becoming a sought-after addition to many homes. These versatile structures offer a range of benefits that appeal to homeowners looking for extra space without the hassle of moving. The concept of a garden room is simple; it is a multipurpose space that can be used for various activities, all while being nestled within the tranquillity of one’s garden.
One of the most prominent advantages of a garden studio is the ability to provide additional functional space. Homeowners often find themselves in need of extra rooms for various purposes—be it a home office, a gym, a playroom for children, or a creative studio. As remote working continues, the demand for a dedicated workspace has increased. A garden room can be transformed into a quiet, distraction-free office, allowing individuals to separate their work life from home life—a luxury that many strive for in today’s fast-paced world.
Garden studios offer an aesthetic enhancement to any property. Designed with flexibility in mind, they can be tailored to meet the personal style of homeowners. A well-designed garden room can serve as a stunning focal point in the garden, complementing the existing landscape
while providing a peaceful retreat for relaxation or entertainment. Moreover, the use of natural materials and large windows can create a sense of connection with the outdoors, allowing occupants to enjoy garden views year-round.
Sustainability is another key benefit; many garden studios are constructed using eco-friendly materials and can incorporate energy-efficient designs, appealing to environmentally conscious buyers. Additionally, these studios provide an opportunity for creative expression. Whether designed as an art studio or a personal gym, they allow individuals to pursue their passions in a space tailored to their needs.
Garden studios contribute positively to property value. Investing in a well-designed garden studio can increase the overall marketability and valuation of a home. As buyers increasingly look for unique features and functional spaces, having a garden studio can set a property apart, making it more attractive in a competitive housing market.
In conclusion, garden studios represent an innovative solution for homeowners seeking additional space, aesthetic appeal, and enhanced property value. With their diverse functionalities and relatively straightforward installation, they stand as a testament to the evolving needs of modern living. geckogardenstudios.com
