EDGES

Exhibition at Watts Gallery. Until 3 November

The project called Edges is produced by artist-curators Kay Aplin and Joseph Young of The Ceramic House (UK) in partnership with Irish curator and sound artist Richard Carr.

Edges explores ceramics and sound art practice through the work of artists from three nations at the western and eastern fringes of Europe - Ireland, UK and Estonia. The works were developed as part of artist residencies and international exchanges, creating collaborative encounters across the two disciplines.

Edges explores what it means to work at the edge of something and how we understand the outsider. This work also expands on the idea of artistic practice as a so-called ‘cutting edge’, through the investigation of geographical boundaries and coastlines of the host nations.

This culminating exhibition is the result of three separate artist residencies and one new commission. All the artworks exhibited can be seen as experimental iterations, made under tight time constraints and in response to place and site. The work was previously shown at Wexford Arts Centre in February – March 2024, augmented by new works created during the residency undertaken by Kay and Joseph at Watts Gallery from October - December 2023.

They continue this legacy in many different ways, through the collection and exhibitions, programming, contemporary art projects and community engagement.

WINKWORTH ARBORETUM & CLAREMONT LANDSCAPE GARDEN

As the season moves from summer to autumn, there’s lots to look forward to at two distinct National Trust outdoor properties and a unique fourteenth century cottage in Surrey.

Autumn colour at Winkworth Arboretum: until mid-November

It’s during the autumn season that Dr Wilfrid Fox’s vision of ‘painting the landscape with trees’ comes to life. As the seasons moves from summer to autumn the many trees, he planted slowly change from verdant greens to dazzling displays of colour. Hawthorns, Enkianthus, Sorbus, Stewartias and Acers light up this wooded valley with pockets of colourful fruits, leaves, and stems but the main vista must be the extended view from the meadow across the lake to take in The Bowl and Oak Bank.

Early morning autumn photography: 15, 22, & 29 October, 5 November

They are opening their gates early for an opportunity to capture the arboretum’s autumn hues with morning photography sessions. Limited to just a 25 people, budding photographers and social media content creators will have exclusive access to the arboretum with a chance to work their magic on capturing the atmosphere and views of this special place.

Sarah the Spider half term trail: Saturday 19 October – Sunday 3 November

Autumn is spider season and it’s also the best time to spot them outdoors. On dewy or frosty mornings, their delicate spider webs reveal themselves, like jewels, glistening amongst the trees.

In celebration of these fascinating creatures, they’ve teamed up with children’s author, Hillary Robinson, writer of the Sarah and Spider book series. Her books have been brought to life on an autumn trail through the arboretum. Climb through a giant spider’s web and enter a world where Sarah has lost her boots and follow the trail around the arboretum to help her find them.

Fungi Fun with Sarah Shepley: 5 & 24 October, 3 & 6 November Autumn is fungi season. What kind of slimy,

surprising, and spectacular fungi will you discover around Winkworth? Join our expert fungi spotter Sarah Shepley for this fun walk around the Arboretum.

Autumn at Claremont Landscape Garden: until mid-November

Embracing many of the traditions of British landscape garden design, the serpentine lake, elegant vistas, grotto and natural-looking treescapes all feature at Claremont. During the autumn, the trees slowly start to change, creating wonderful golden-brown views from across the lake and down from the top of the amphitheatre. Visit for morning walks with the dog, meet-ups with friends and family or join a guided walk.

Enchanted Claremont half term trail: Saturday 19 October to Sunday 3 November

Claremont’s Wandering Witch returns this halfterm for a fun trail around the garden. Grab your broomsticks and join her band of magickal creatures at Magick School. Latest Innovations

Loop Associates is opening a new showroom in Esher, where anyone looking to bring smart technology into their home, create a home cinema or are renovating can see the latest innovations in the world of sound, lighting, and visual solutions. We caught up with Technical Director Steve Harper ahead of an exclusive opening event for our readers. We discovered the team’s philosophy is simple: technology should enhance, not interrupt, the tranquility of home life.

1. CIRCADIAN RHYTHM LIGHTING

Imagine your home’s lighting naturally shifting throughout the day to match the sun’s natural rhythm, making mornings feel bright and energizing with cool light, and evenings warm and calming, perfect for winding down. This clever circadian rhythm lighting adjusts the color temperature of your lights to support your wellbeing, far more effectively than traditional fixed lighting. This promotes better sleep patterns and creates the ideal atmosphere for both busy family mornings and relaxing evenings—keeping your home in sync with nature, effortlessly.

2. HOME CINEMA

Turn movie night into a full-on cinema experience, right in your own home! The latest home cinema innovations are all about luxury and ease, offering everything from voice-activated lighting to hidden surround sound systems that immerse you in every scene. Picture yourself settling in for a film, your mobile-free zone keeping distractions at bay, while the lights dim automatically, and the screen lights up, all without you having to leave the sofa.

3. DIGITAL ARTWORKS

Transform the artwork in your home at the touch of a button. With digital art displays, you can shift the mood of your space effortlessly— whether it’s a calming landscape for a serene morning or bold abstract pieces to match an evening gathering. These innovative displays allow you to curate your environment based on the season, time of day, or even your personal mood, creating an ever-changing gallery in your living room.

4. SPATIAL AUDIO

Spatial audio is no longer just for inside the home—it’s making its way outdoors, too, transforming gardens into immersive soundscapes. Inside, spatial audio enhances every room by delivering rich, multi-directional sound, whether you’re watching a film or listening to music. Outside, it can be used to create a soothing ambiance in the garden with natureinspired sounds or gentle music that blends seamlessly into the environment.

CLASSIC ATTRACTION

Historics’ classic car auction on 23rd November offers tempting choices

As of 31st August, there were some 1.2 million electric cars silently plying our roads. Yet to many a car enthusiast, it’s a statistic that’s eclipsed by the fact that there are nearly twice as many cars in regular use in the UK that were first registered 20 years ago and more.

This is the realm of the classic and collector car enthusiast, expertly catered for by Historics Auctioneers.

The lure of cars of yesteryear is well known to Historics, one of the UK’s foremost classic car auction specialists, some 12,000 hugely varied classic and collector cars having passed beneath the auctioneer’s gavel since 2010.

Historics’ upcoming winter auction at MercedesBenz World, Brooklands near Weybridge, on Saturday 23rd November, is a superb reflection of the amazing breadth of choice to those interested and engaged in classic car ownership.

The age of the 175 captivating cars on sale in the sleek and inviting setting of Mercedes-Benz World spans nearly a century, and includes fine examples from some 40 different marques. And when it comes to cost, Historics serves up an appetising menu that caters for a widely varying depth of pocket, from highly affordable to enormously collectible classic exotica, and all inbetween.

To many, British sports cars of the 60’s and 70’s

take the limelight, the enduring popularity of such iconic brands as Austin Healey, MG and Triumph being due not only to their immense character but by the fact that they are modest in terms of maintenance costs, with spares being readily available. At the November sale, a 1971 MG B Roadster, offered enticingly without reserve, waves the flag immaculately for the affordable genre of ‘everyday’ classics.

Catering for more exotic tastes, the likes of Aston Martin, Bentley, Jaguar and Rolls-Royce are all well represented at Historics’ five annual sales, and it’s no different here at the Mercedes-Benz World auction.

Early consignments include a duo of emotive Aston Martins by way of a 1991 Aston Martin Virage, whilst for those interested in the ‘DB’ dynasty, there’s an alluring Aston Martin DB9 of 2005 vintage.

These are representative of a fast-growing classic car sector, that of ‘modern classics’. It’s proving immensely popular in attracting younger buyers to whom greater creature comfort over older classics, plus all-round performance are frequently the lure.

Historics sells a greatest number of classic Mercedes-Benz models of any in the UK and, not surprisingly, the true stalwart of premium classic cars is well represented, including an imperious 1960 Mercedes-Benz 190SL Roadster. But to some the choice just has be a classic Jaguar... Coventry’s finest is celebrated here by a lovely collection of models including a glorious 1952 Jaguar XK120 Roadster.

THE DETAILS

To appreciate the full depth and breadth of classics on sale at this fascinating auction, visit Historics’ website where you’ll find details of all entries and the all-important preregistration to bid. historics.co.uk.

The Saturday 23rd November auction, starting at 9.30am, is preceded by three full viewing days at the venue, giving the opportunity to thoroughly inspect all entries at close quarters. Entry is by catalogue, available on the door.

Haegue Yang: Leap Year

9 October 2024 - 5 January 2025

The Hayward Gallery presents the first major UK survey of the internationally celebrated artist, Haegue Yang.

Considered to be one of the leading artistic voices of her generation, Yang’s work is both spellbinding and boundary-pushing, probing into contemporary ideas of cross-cultural pollination, modernism and folk traditions, and personal and political histories.

Leap Year illuminates Yang’s multifaceted, interdisciplinary and highly inventive practice from the early 2000s to today, echoing the Hayward Gallery’s mission, to champion artists from across the world whose ideas challenge and spark new ways of thinking.

Arranged into five thematic zones, the exhibition will include three major new commissions and several new productions to present a visual and sensory experience through installation, sculpture, collage, text, video, wallpaper and sound. Yang’s artwork often transforms everyday domestic items and industrial objects, from drying racks and light bulbs to nylon pom-poms and hand-knitted yarn, into distinctive sculptures and multimedia installations that engage

the senses.

Leap Year will feature key works from some of her most notable series including Light Sculptures, Sonic Sculptures, The Intermediates, Dress Vehicles, Mesmerizing Mesh and the Venetian blind installations.

Haegue’s recent solo exhibitions have taken place at institutions including: Helsinki Art Museum (2024); National Gallery of Australia, Canberra (2023), S.M.A.K., Ghent (2023); Pinacoteca de São Paulo (2023); SMK – National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen (2022), Tate St Ives (2020); MoMA – The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2019); and Museum Ludwig, Cologne (2018).

Haegue Yang says: “My artworks often have very long names with seemingly odd combinations of words that are hard even for me to memorise, whereas my exhibition titles are much simpler. This naming tradition mirrors my relationship to art-making versus exhibition-making. Art making is like weaving together a piece of complex, and therefore impossible to unweave, fabric, while exhibition making is like tailoring it into something comfortable to wear. Both acts are eager attempts towards perfection. For this survey show, I deliberately unfocused my eyes to obtain the hidden 3D vision of my own practice, which is a rare, perfect occurrence like a leap year.”

HAIR | CARE

Here are the common mistakes you’re probably making, from the wrong shampoo to not rinsing properly. By Lara Owen

“Chances are you’ve inadvertently been damaging your hair through inapt washing habits”

Probably something you didn’t realise you were doing incorrectly until now. It seems there is little more to washing your hair than wetting, shampooing and rinsing – right? Wrong.

Chances are you’ve inadvertently been damaging your hair through inapt washing habits. We hear from leading celebrity hairdressers on the correct way to wash it.

Mistakes you probably make when washing your hair

Hairstylist to Elle Macpherson and Kate Moss, Jon Hala, says the first mistake people make when washing their hair is using the incorrect shampoo. “Shampoos are very prescriptive now and easy to determine what you require for what purpose.” If you have fine and limp hair, avoid overly nourishing shampoos that will leave your hair more silky and lifeless.

“Common mistakes are using overly hot water,

which activates and excites the sebaceous glands,” says Hala. “This creates sebum, which makes your hair look greasy.”

Another mistake people often make is not rinsing thoroughly. TONI&GUY’s Cos Sakkas advises that you rinse your shampoo at least twice. On top of this, “Only apply conditioner to the ends of your hair, avoid the roots, as you have your natural sebum to condition those.”

Post-shower is where the mistakes proliferate. Apparently using a so-called ‘towel-turban’ is one of the worst things you can do. “When we pile our hair up onto the top of our heads, the cuticle is the wrong way and can easily be damaged, leading to tangling and making it more difficult to manage wet hair,” says one of the UK’s leading trichologists, Eva Proudman.

“Always think of the backwash at the hairdressers, the way they wash your hair, how it falls – not by tipping your head upside down or piling the hair onto the top of the head.”

BOUCLEME SCALP MASSAGER, £12.

How often should you be washing your hair?

How often you wash your hair entirely depends on your hair type and scalp, but the general consensus appears to be two to three times a week. However, “the scalp has 180,000 oil glands as well as sweat glands so it quickly attracts dirt, dead skin cells and debris,” says Proudman. “This can all lead to an imbalance if left to build up – which in turn affects the hair quality and growth.”

“For curly hair types, I would never recommend washing daily: every other day, or every two to three days is fine,” says founder and CEO of Bouclème, Michele Scott-Lynch.

“I personally recommend not washing too often to avoid stripping the hair,” says hairdresser to Victoria Beckham, Kieran Tudor, “But I suggest a once-a-week scalp treatment with a detoxifying yet nourishing cleanser that will help to maintain a healthy scalp and balance moisture levels, while also energising hair follicles.”

How to hack the technique

More often than not, we wash our hair in a rush, leaving tangles and product, meaning our hair is more susceptible to breakage. “Take the time to massage shampoo into the roots of your hair. If

your scalp feels greasy, or you have product build up, double shampoo for a thorough scalp cleanse,” says Scott-Lynch. “If you have time, use a scalp massager tool that stimulates the hair follicles.” This helps promote hair growth by exfoliating the scalp.

“When you follow up with a conditioner, take your time to detangle before you rinse out,” advises Scott-Lynch, “For curly hair types, I recommend leaving some or all your conditioner in the lengths of the hair to transform dry frizzy hair into beautifully defined curls.”

Ingredients to AVOID in your haircare

The current line of thought is that natural haircare is best. This, in many ways, is true, however the demonisation of sulphates may not be entirely justified. “Not all sulphates are bad for our hair and scalp – the ‘right’ sulphates can be very effective cleansers,” says Proudman. “Types of SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) sulphates that have a small molecule and can penetrate into the protein fibre of the hair and the epidermis, causing dryness and dehydration, should be avoided.

“However, MEA and TEA sulphates offer superb cleansing, with a bigger molecule that doesn’t penetrate or cause dehydration. In essence, cleansing is key to removing dirt debris and oil from the hair and scalp.”

The rules are different however if you colour your hair. Stéphane Ferreira, operations manager and senior stylist at Live True London, says, “We always recommend looking for colour-safe shampoos to keep your colour looking vibrant for as long as possible. Similarly, if you have curly or coiled hair, you might choose to avoid shampoos with parabens and silicones to help you maintain your optimum curl pattern.”

TA revolution in skin rejuvenation

DERMAPEN MICRONEEDLING WITH EXOSOMES

At The Cosmetic Doctors Company

he derma roller micro-needling device was first developed almost 20 years ago and remains a popular form of skin rejuvenation for both clinic and home use.

Dermapen is a significant improvement on traditional needling by roller. Dermapen is an electronic, oscillating device with a disposable sterile cartridge of needles at the tip that penetrate vertically as it glides over your skin. This results in super-fine microchannels and

“This ability to deliver anti-ageing products, such as exosomes and growth factors deeping into the skin is now regarded as the major benefit of micro-needling.

We believe that the combination of exosomes with Dermapen is a real advance in skin anti-ageing medicine”

much less unnecessary trauma to the skin resulting in a faster recovery. Active serums applied to the skin during micro-needling will penetrate via these microchannels into the deeper layers of skin producing significant improvements compared with conventional topical application. At the Cosmetic Doctors Company we now use a combination of Exosomes and growth factors in conjunction with Dermapen.

Exosomes are microscopic droplets that are naturally produced by our cells. They are cellular messengers containing growth factors, proteins, and mRNA playing a role in communication

“Exosomes are believed to be significantly more powerful than retinol, the current gold standard in skin anti-ageing”

between cells. These trigger cellular repair and rejuvenation.

We recommend two treatments 4 ~ 6 weeks apart for maximum benefit.

The results are not instant; this is about regeneration and longevity.

The Transformation Facelift

The Transformation Facelift is a bespoke treatment plan put together by Doctor Nyla to turn back the clock on ageing and help you look 10 years younger in six weeks! By increasing collagen production to lift and tighten the skin, as well as performing ‘tweakments’ to add lift and structure to the face, you can start feeling incredible in no time! The Transformation Facelift uses multiple different non-surgical methods and technologies to provide an overall lifted, tightened and more youthful appearance, to help you feel like you’re most confident self again.

The skin ageing process happens to everyone, and is a completely natural process, however it can be very difficult for some people, and make them lose confidence in their appearance. As we get older, the production of collagen and elastin in our bodies slows, causing the common signs of skin ageing, such as fine lines, wrinkles and a loss of volume in the skin. Collagen and elastin are the proteins that exist within many of the body’s tissues, including the skin, and gives structural support, strength, elasticity and durability to the skin. As a result of the slowing in collagen production, skin loses this support and elasticity over time. Collagen is also an important part of the wound healing process – when you have a cut or scratch, for example, collagen production in the area increases to safely mend the skin in the area.

Skincare excellence returns to Esher

Summer is over, the nights are drawing in and the heating is going back on. But it’s not all bad news. In addition to grunge-inspired smoky eyes and classic red lips, Surrey’s discerning health and beauty buffs are also celebrating the return to the leafy suburbs of cutting-edge treatments. This November, Remedi Medispa will be opening its flagship branch in Esher, with veteran skincare specialist, Amy Birkby-Spiers, at the helm. Locals are excited about the new owner returning 96 High Street to its former glory, with good reason.

Jill Zander, internationally recognised aesthetics expert, first opened a clinic at the premises in 1997. As described by British Vogue, in their round up of the Top 10 Beauty Destinations Outside London, Zander’s clinic specialised in ‘techy facials, innovative treatments and great nonsurgical lifting techniques’ and was known for its ‘highly professional staff and loyal customer base’. A valued member of the local community and high street mainstay for over 20 years, Jill has been sorely missed since she hung up her treatment gloves in 2016.

Amy, who worked with Zander from 2009 to 2016, was deeply inspired by her mentor’s approach. She became a sought-after skincare technician working in central London, Surrey

and Kent, and delivering training nationwide. In 2020, she founded Remedi Medispa, providing the very latest science-led skin treatments along with a range of holistic wellbeing therapies, with a particular focus on women’s health.

Remedi Medispa rapidly established itself as the premiere skin and wellness clinic in Kent, and Amy continues to build a reputation and customer base reminiscent of Zander’s own—all while raising two young children. At this year’s Kent Women in Business awards, she was a RunnerUp and Finalist in the Mumpreneur of the Year and Service Excellence Award respectively. Her excitement about the next step is palpable:

‘I’m so proud of my business and thrilled to be bringing it home to Esher. Jill taught me everything I know here. I appreciate the high standards of the local clientele and am delighted to be back. I have a fantastic team around me and can’t wait to get started.’

Remedi Medispa will be hosting an all-day launch party at the clinic on 14th November, from 11am to 7pm, with all proceeds going to Princess Alice Hospice in Esher.

Bag your ticket to this exclusive event by contacting the team at info@remedimedispa.co.uk, or calling on 07955 100 348.

All the things you wanted to know about breast cancer but never dared ask

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Mr Daniel Leff, Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at King Edward VII’s Hospital answers all the questions you are too scared to ask.

He says: “I see a lot of patients who are embarrassed to ask me questions. But I always encourage them to discuss whatever’s on their mind, rather than searching the internet for answers, where there’s plenty of misinformation and myths. It’s always best to speak to a medical professional if you have any concerns.”

If a family member has had breast cancer, will I get it too?

There are lots of different risk factors for breast cancer. Some of these factors are genetic and

some are environmental, so often it’s hard to say exactly why someone has developed a cancer - it could be due to multiple factors.

There are some genetic factors that we do know about - for example some families carry the BRCA 1 or 2 genes which raise the risk of some cancers, including breast and ovarian cancer in women and male breast cancer and prostate cancer in men.

If you have potential breast cancer symptoms and there is a history of breast, ovarian, prostate or pancreatic cancer in your family, it’s definitely worth seeking medical advice.

“There are lots of different risk factors for breast cancer. Some of these factors are genetic and some are environmental”

I’ve heard that being on the contraceptive pill (or taking HRT) could give you breast cancer?

There is some scientific research showing that people who take the contraceptive pill have a slightly higher chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer than people who have never taken it. But there are lots of other factors involved, including your family history as well as lifestyle factors such as the amount of alcohol you drink, being overweight, or previously having had radiation therapy.

There are some studies that show a link between taking HRT and a slightly increased risk of developing breast cancer in post-menopausal women - but only if you have taken it for longer than a year. And this risk starts to decrease when you stop taking it.

Should people who have had breast augmentation surgery be more worried?

There’s not enough evidence to know whether breast implants are a risk factor in breast cancer.

But a myth that I often hear is that breast implants make it impossible to detect or diagnose breast cancer. Happily, this is completely untrue. When it comes to self-examinations though, there are some different techniques to use. For example, people who have breast implants may want to lie down and feel for the implant, then feel carefully and gently for their ribs underneath to check for lumps.

When standing, it’s important to check for changes to the appearance of the breasts such as swelling, colour changes, rashes or puckering, by looking in the mirror. Try this both with arms raised and arms by the sides to help check for changes.

Is it true that mammograms don’t work on younger people?

Breast cancer mainly occurs in people over 50, and it’s rare in people in their 20s and 30s, but that doesn’t mean that younger people shouldn’t be vigilant. The majority of lumps in younger people are totally benign lumps called fibroadenomaswhich may feel hard and rubbery - but your GP may refer you to a breast clinic for a scan or biopsy to make sure.

It is true that mammograms are used more to diagnose breast cancer in older patients - because the breast tissue tends to be less dense, making

it easier to detect on the mammogram. But we have lots of other very successful techniques to diagnose breast cancer in younger patients, such as ultrasound examinations.

Is it harder to spot breast cancer when you’re pregnant or just had a baby?

There are lots of changes to the breasts during pregnancy and some women might notice new lumps in their breasts, or have discharge from the nipples that is either milky or bloody.

Most of the time, this is completely normal, but it’s still really important to check your breasts regularly even while pregnant or breast-feeding. Don’t assume that any new lumps or bumps are just associated with pregnancy or breast-feeding, and look out for other signs such as a lump or swelling in the armpit, a sunken nipple, dimpling or puckering of the skin or a rash on one breast.

Redefining treatment for knee osteoarthritis

We look at the cutting-edge injectable hydrogel that delivers long lasting, proven pain relief for knee osteoarthritis without surgery (1-2)

For many of the 8.5 million people in the UK living with knee osteoarthritis (OA),(3) life is hampered by constant pain, limited mobility, and difficulty with simple, everyday tasks. But there’s hope with Arthrosamid® – the first and only permanent injectable treatment that is proven to maintain a significant, long-lasting reduction in knee OA pain – even four years post treatment. (1) Experts are calling it a ‘game-changer.’

People delay seeking help for knee pain, assuming it’s an unavoidable part of ageing. But Arthrosamid® offers patients a new pathway. Unlike traditional treatments, it’s proven to offer respite from knee osteoarthritis with a single treatment, and without the need for surgery.(1-2)

Knee OA: common causes and treatments

Knee OA is a long-term condition where shockabsorbing cartilage is worn away, causing bones to rub together and the joint to become stiff, swollen, and painful. Despite OA being the most common type of arthritis and the fastest cause of disability worldwide (4), the treatment area has seen

minimal progression in the last 20 years. With so little known about the exact causes of knee OA, a permanent cure has yet to be discovered.

Many people find themselves in an ongoing cycle of treatments, such as painkillers, physiotherapy appointments and various knee joint injectables (e.g. steroids or hyaluronic acid). Despite providing some relief, the effects can often be relatively short-lived, leaving many fearing that knee replacement surgery is the only long-term answer.

Paul Trikha

The emergence of Arthrosamid®, however, has been hailed by leading clinicians as an exciting development; the first and only injectable hydrogel that has been proven (5) to help patients with knee osteoarthritis and offers a real alternative to surgery.

What the experts say

Mr Paul Trikha, a Consultant Specialist Knee Surgeon at the Surrey Orthopaedic Clinic in Weybridge, one of a number of clinics in the area offering the Arthrosamid® treatment, says: “I’ve treated patients with Arthrosamid® and have seen them experience significant reductions in pain, as well as improvements in their mobility, and overall quality of life.

“In contrast to other treatments, Arthrosamid® appears to be offering patients longer-lasting respite from the pain and immobility of knee osteoarthritis and, in many cases, avoiding or delaying the need for surgery. I believe it’s setting

a real benchmark in the area of orthopaedics, offering hope and optimism to many of those living with this condition.”

How does Arthrosamid® work?

Arthrosamid® is a hydrogel made up of 2.5 per cent cross-linked polyacrylamide and 97.5 per cent water(5). Arthrosamid® combines with the synovial tissue in the knee to form a permanent scaffold,(6) and it’s this unique characteristic that provides a significant reduction in OA pain over a longer period (1-2) – with one single treatment.

Move freely, live fully(1,2,7)

Wayne Brown, age 65, is a keen Taekwondo enthusiast from Windsor, and has suffered from joint issues for many years but noticed a real improvement since being treated with Arthrosamid®. “The chronic and persistent pain in my knee was starting to really restrict my exercise and quality of life, and I was keen to look for an alternative to pain medications. I also wanted to help ward off the need for potential knee surgery, as I was concerned about the intensive recovery period needed to get back to full strength and fitness.

“I decided to give Arthrosamid® a chance and, following a quick procedure with minimal recovery time, I was immediately impressed by the improvements in my pain levels and uplift in overall mobility. I noticed a significant improvement in just a few weeks and am now back to full strength, with no pain. I’m confident I made the right decision to try Arthrosamid® which has now given me back my ability to exercise and improved my quality of life immeasurably.”

BESPOKE LUXURY FROM OLIVE & BARR

Founded by cabinet maker Al Bruce in 2018, British handmade kitchen company Olive & Barr was born out of a passion for quality craftsmanship, attention to detail and an intuition for kitchen design.

Blending seamlessly into any home, from rustic country pile to contemporary new build, Olive & Barr’s signature shaker style combines traditional joinery with modern techniques to create an elegant, timeless kitchen that transcends trends and focuses on three pillars of design: simplicity, durability and function. Customers have the opportunity to experience an Olive & Barr kitchen up close before purchasing, in any of the three UK showrooms: South London, Malvern or newly launched Gloucestershire.

An Olive & Barr kitchen is as unique as its customer, thanks to a truly bespoke service from start to finish. The team takes nothing for granted and does its utmost to understand its customers’ needs and wants. Good value is also a mainstay here: Olive & Barr prides itself on its (seemingly) impossibly competitive prices, bringing customers both an impeccable finish and exceptional value.

To keep costs down, Olive & Barr invest in cutting-edge technology to save time on traditional techniques like dovetailing. Small changes guarantee the best products at the best prices,

alongside this, the drawer boxes are dovetailed using solid oak, to provide the very best quality. Harnessing the time-honoured traditions of yesteryear, whilst simultaneously embracing the technological developments of the future allows each customer to receive a reassuringly iconic Shaker kitchen, without having to relinquish the cutting-edge ‘bells and whistles’ of a contemporary design.

Made exclusively in the UK in their West Country workshops, each Olive & Barr Kitchen is crafted by artisans using carefully sourced materials which are both traceable and accountable. The materials used are accredited by the FSC (an international organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests) and the team at Olive & Barr remain diligent with recycling and reuse wherever possible, recycling all packaging after installation and repurposing off cuts of timber.

A quintessentially classic kitchen maker, with a focus on timeless beauty, impeccable quality, excellent value and sustainable and forwardthinking design, Olive & Barr aims to break the mould of traditional kitchen companies and exceed its customers’ expectations in every way. The Baked Tile Company on how to utilise unusual tile shapes to add impact and style

TILE STYLE: Discover neutrals with impact

Bold colours and strong patterns might be the go-to choices when it comes to adding impact to a bathroom, but expert advice from The Baked Tile Company shows neutrals can be just as effective.

distinctive pattern.

Lesley added: “Grout is an unsung hero when it comes to bathroom design. So often we stick with white or black but even experimenting with soft shades, such as beige, will transform the look and feel of the room, bringing warmth and interest.”

The Chloe Lozenge collection is available in five finishes: White Matt, Teal Matt, White Gloss, Sand Matt and Blush Matt. The collection is also available in a metro shape, measuring 7.5cm x 30cm, which is available in the same finishes as its lozenge counterpart.

Utilising shape and choosing contrasting grout can add detail without overwhelming the space, according to Lesley Taylor, interior designer and founder of The Baked Tile Company.

A recent scheme designed and completed by The Baked Tile Company’s teams pairs a curved matt white tile with an earthy beige grout to bring warmth and style to a family bathroom.

Lesley said: “Bathrooms should be a sanctuary, a haven for relaxing. But homeowners can still push the boundaries of interior styling.

“Those looking for statement walls, without overpowering their bathroom, should consider lozenge-shaped tiles. Their gentle curves will bring a subtle sense of style while adding to the overall relaxing ambience of a bathroom.”

The Baked Tile Company’s Chloe Lozenge is a stunning oval-shaped tile that brings a touch of pattern with its signature curves. They can be used in both a grid formation and offset so that when combined with a contrasting grout form a

Setting the Style

Tiles are a versatile design element that can set the tone for your bathroom’s aesthetics. Whether you’re aiming for a sleek modern look or a classic vintage charm, tiles offer endless possibilities.

• Modern Appeal: Large-format tiles in neutral tones create a clean, contemporary appearance, making the space feel open and airy.

• Timeless Elegance: Classic subway tiles or intricate mosaic patterns provide a sophisticated and enduring style.

• Bold Statements: Vibrant colors and patterns can serve as focal points, adding character and a personal touch to the space.

Enhancing Visual Appeal

The aesthetic appeal of your bathroom can be significantly improved with tiles. Their diversity in style promotes artistic expression and can support the development of a unified aesthetic. There are several approaches to integrating them into your bathroom. Using feature walls composed of textured or patterned tiles is one way to create a beautiful focal point. The second is to select floor tiles that are strong, low maintenance, and visually striking. The third is to concentrate on tiling the

area behind the washbasin or bathtub to add visual appeal and shield the walls from dampness.

Creating a Sense of Space

Tiles can also influence how spacious or cozy a bathroom feels. Light-colored tiles and large formats can make smaller bathrooms appear larger, while darker or patterned tiles can add warmth and intimacy to more expansive spaces.

• Small Bathrooms: Light and neutral tiles can visually expand the space, making it feel more open and inviting.

• Large Bathrooms: Rich textures and bold designs can make large bathrooms feel more intimate and comfortable

Adding Luxury and Comfort

Tiles can elevate the luxury and comfort of your bathroom. Features like heated floors or natural stone tiles can transform a standard bathroom into a spa-like retreat.

Tiles are more than just a functional element; they’re a transformative design feature that can elevate the style, functionality, and comfort of your bathroom. By choosing the right tiles, you can create a space that not only meets your needs but also reflects your personal style and adds a touch of luxury to your daily routine.

CELESTIALLY INSPIRED INTERIORS

The nights are creeping in and darkness is all around – so it’s no wonder our gaze is being pulled upward to what’s going on overhead in the cosmos. The mystery and grace of stars, skies, lunar bodies and their hypnotic arcing movements have descended, bringing a sense of wonder and ethereal beauty into our lives and living spaces.

Fusing circles, spheres and organic forms with metallic finishes, black, white and the odd burst of fiery red, the trend is led by the glowing balls and free-floating formations of lighting, which mimics the soft ambience of distant stars or the phases of the moon. Larger pieces of furniture and accessories are getting in on the act too, with their patterns and colours, as well as extra-terrestrial streamlined and spherical forms.

There are two schools of thought in the celestial interiors trend. Number one is go literal, a la Moooi’s Celestial Carpet by Edward van Vliet which represents the movement of the planets. Inspired by the origins of the universe and the possibility of life on other worlds, it depicts mathematical-style imagery of the universe in soft woven textile. The other take on the celestial trend is more abstract, generally using multiple globular shapes to hint at planetary-style movement and interaction in the way of Cattelan Italia’s Planeta lighting family by Studio Kronos – the blown glass shades of the 1960s-inspired table, ceiling, wall and floor lamps centre around steel frames, each creating a miniature revolving cosmic system.

Approach the trend from a slightly scientific angle, or on a more sculptural level, and either way celebrate the innovative aesthetic of the 1950s/60s space-race with a contemporary minimalism and sleekness. Modern celestial designs feel both organic and futuristic, the copious amount of rounded forms involved creating an atmosphere which is surprisingly calming and tranquil, as well as out of this world. chaplins.co.uk

Quality Construction in Surrey and SW London

The Rise of Garden Studios: A versatile Solution for Modern Living

Garden studios have gained significant popularity in recent years, becoming a sought-after addition to many homes. These versatile structures offer a range of benefits that appeal to homeowners looking for extra space without the hassle of moving. The concept of a garden room is simple; it is a multipurpose space that can be used for various activities, all while being nestled within the tranquillity of one’s garden.

One of the most prominent advantages of a garden studio is the ability to provide additional functional space. Homeowners often find themselves in need of extra rooms for various purposes—be it a home office, a gym, a playroom for children, or a creative studio. As remote working continues, the demand for a dedicated workspace has increased. A garden room can be transformed into a quiet, distraction-free office, allowing individuals to separate their work life from home life—a luxury that many strive for in today’s fast-paced world.

Garden studios offer an aesthetic enhancement to any property. Designed with flexibility in mind, they can be tailored to meet the personal style of homeowners. A well-designed garden room can serve as a stunning focal point in the garden, complementing the existing landscape

while providing a peaceful retreat for relaxation or entertainment. Moreover, the use of natural materials and large windows can create a sense of connection with the outdoors, allowing occupants to enjoy garden views year-round.

Sustainability is another key benefit; many garden studios are constructed using eco-friendly materials and can incorporate energy-efficient designs, appealing to environmentally conscious buyers. Additionally, these studios provide an opportunity for creative expression. Whether designed as an art studio or a personal gym, they allow individuals to pursue their passions in a space tailored to their needs.

Garden studios contribute positively to property value. Investing in a well-designed garden studio can increase the overall marketability and valuation of a home. As buyers increasingly look for unique features and functional spaces, having a garden studio can set a property apart, making it more attractive in a competitive housing market.

In conclusion, garden studios represent an innovative solution for homeowners seeking additional space, aesthetic appeal, and enhanced property value. With their diverse functionalities and relatively straightforward installation, they stand as a testament to the evolving needs of modern living. geckogardenstudios.com

Kelly Hoppen CBE:

‘Accessorising your home is like putting jewellery on when you get dressed’

] The interior designer speaks to Sam WylieHarris about her new design collaboration with Marks & Spencer, styling tips and more.

The multi-award-winning designer Kelly Hoppen is famous for her signature neutral palette – taupes, beiges, blacks and creams, greys and whites – which have graced some of the most famous celebrity homes and hotels in the world.

“Whether it’s in Middle East, America or Asia, each one is very different, and it’s exciting,” highlights Hoppen.

With a wide array of projects on the go, she says it’s about understanding the philosophy of how people live, what your client wants, and then creating a story.

“So it’s not just a bedroom. It’s creating a backdrop, like in a theatre.” She continues, “My job is to create the backdrop for people to live.”

Today, at 65, with a career spanning 47 years, having conquered the world of luxurious interiors, she’s launching an exclusive home design collaboration with Marks & Spencer.

“I’m beside myself,” enthuses Hoppen. “It’s

about to be seen, having worked on it for a yearand-a-half in secret, which is not easy for a Leo!”

“With the Marks & Spencer collection, it’s my dream. To give people the tools to be able to do things in their home – it works easily, and can be mixed with different pieces of furniture because it’s neutral enough.”

Hoppen reveals it’s been a lot of work, with four more collections under way. “I’m really happy about it, and something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. The price range is fantastic, and the quality is good.”

She continues: “When you get to know someone, you’re designing something; or if you’re doing a hotel room, you’re imagining how people will use it.

“So it’s got to be practical, but it’s got to be ‘the dream’. It’s got to have lovely textures so you melt into them… there are so many different layers and factors.”

Influenced by luxury living, within the

75-piece collection she describes as “affordable”, Hoppen wanted to create something “with beautiful bedding, cushions, vases, lighting, throws, curtains and small pieces of furniture – with all the accessories that go with it.”

“It’s about making people’s home feel luxurious in their own way. Everybody wants to have a beautiful home, but to have affordable luxury was something that I felt wasn’t really out there.”

In her own words: “It’s very much a classic Kelly Hoppen.”

As well as numerous decos inspired by clean lines and curves for a timelessly elegant look, in true five-star hotel style, a high level of comfort is part of the aesthetic.

“When people think about their bedrooms, the bed is the largest piece of furniture. So if you can dress the bed and make it look beautiful with lovely, soft fabrics, that’s half the battle in a bedroom.”

Then you can look at your lighting, suggests Hoppen. Maybe do a feature wall behind the bed, or reupholster your headboard, and then she says it’s all the little bits you put with it.

“Whether it’s a little candle holder to one of the vases, or a beautiful glass vase dish, or whatever’s in the collection that catches your eye.”

“I always say accessorising your home is like putting your jewellery on when you get dressed… it’s jewellery for the home.”

The designer who lives in London with her partner – who she fondly calls ‘The Fox’ –

says when designing your home, texture is all important, but it’s not only soft texture.

“So you’ve done your bed, you’ve got your lovely throw, you’ve got your cushions, you’ve got your art up, then you need some hard texture.

“It’s the same with cooking. You’re adding different tastes to create that stew you’re making. It’s not just the chicken with tomato.

“I know it’s a weird way of looking at it, but it’s the same when you’re creating a home, it’s a recipe, and you just keep adding things – and the different textures will make it feel much warmer.”

And with her confidence-boosting, best-selling interior books to help create a Hoppen home of your own, are these part of the hardware to make everything feel balanced?

“I always say to people, books are literally your best friend when you’re trying to accessorise.

“If you’ve got shelves and you’ve got books, lay them flat and then do them randomly. So you can put objects on them, creating more interest.

“On a coffee table, people get scared of what to put on them. If you’ve got a pile of books, put a candle so it’s slightly higher.”

She says you can then place a vase to the left. “Which is slightly lower, so it’s different heights on a coffee table. But as my partner says, you need to leave enough space to put a drink or cup of coffee.”

Visually gorgeous, curvaceous vases feature among the M&S collection – with floral arrangements part of her signature style. “For me, any flowers are nice, just as long as they are one colour.”

With meticulous attention to detail, black and white photography is one of Hoppen’s passions. A case in point, she’ll soon be doing a masterclass on Instagram demonstrating how to frame and hang them.

“Every mount should be white or cream, or grey or black, depending on the look or feel of your room, but I would go for white.”

If you have two really beautiful black and white photographs, she says to get a simple black frame and have them both exactly the same size on either side of the bed.

“But if you’ve got a wall, say, across from your bed, you could do a collage of different sizes; or it could be pictures of your family or kids.

“It’s the way it’s framed that’s important, so every frame should be the same.”

THE NEW NEUTRAL

Brown wallpapers for every interior style

Decorating with Brown is, to Divine Savages, all about embracing earthy, warm, and organic tones. A modern take on neutrals, focusing on creating cosy and inviting spaces through the use of wallpapers, fabrics and accessories in varying tones and textures of browns and other nature-inspired shades.

Look for wallpapers featuring botanical prints, leaves, or even abstract nature motifs in brown tones. These patterns can range from delicate and detailed to bold and graphic, allowing you to create a statement wall that is still rooted in nature. Geometric patterns can add a modern touch to the trend. Opt for designs that incorporate various shades of brown, taupe, and beige to create visual interest while staying within the neutral palette. Or playing with metallic accents in bronze, gold, or copper can add a touch of glamour to brown tones, enhancing the overall warmth and richness of the space.
